Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

Count It All Joy

  • The head text is read from James, the first chapter: 'James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting. My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.' The announced subject is 'The Patience of the Saints.'
  • We live in an impatient society — microwave ovens, instant pudding, fast food and Minute Rice, swipe quickly and now tap — and impatience breeds stress, poor decisions, and regret; the preacher confesses his own need of patience while driving.
  • The waiting texts are gathered: 'Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord' (Psalms 27:14); 'Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee' (Proverbs 20:22); and David's 'I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry' (Psalms 40:1).
  • Until our faith is tried unto patience we do not truly know whether we have faith: if we do not have the patience of the saints, we likely have the impatience of the ain'ts.

Scriptures: James 1:1-4; Psalm 27:14; Proverbs 20:22; Psalm 40:1

Keeping the Commandments of God

  • Revelation 14:12 names the two attributes: 'Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.'
  • The commandments from Exodus are walked through in order — no other gods before me; no graven image, for the Lord is a jealous God; the name of the Lord not taken in vain; remember the Sabbath day, a decreed time of rest; honour thy father and thy mother, the commandment with promise; thou shalt not kill, which the preacher applies directly to abortion; thou shalt not commit adultery; thou shalt not steal; thou shalt not bear false witness; thou shalt not covet.
  • Staying on course is illustrated by navigation: one degree off is a little over five feet in a hundred yards, 92.2 feet in a mile, six miles between San Francisco and Los Angeles (with the Pacific Ocean at the edge of both), and 4,169 miles on a rocket to the Moon.

Scriptures: Revelation 14:12; Exodus 20:3-17

Grace That Teaches, Faith That Justifies

  • The book of Jude is cited for those who crept in unawares and turned the grace of God into lasciviousness; Titus answers what grace actually does: 'For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world.' Grace is the guidepost that leads to salvation, not a get-out-of-jail-free card.
  • Galatians 2:16-17: a man is not justified by the works of the law but by the faith of Jesus Christ — yet if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves are found sinners, Christ is not therefore the minister of sin; God forbid.
  • Romans 5 traces the progression: being justified by faith we have peace with God; by faith we have access into this grace wherein we stand; tribulation works patience, patience experience, and experience hope, because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us — and in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

Scriptures: Titus 2:11-12; Galatians 2:16-17; Romans 5:1-6

Waiting for the Promise of the Father

  • Jesus commanded the disciples not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father: 'For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.'
  • They waited — they had been patient — and when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all in one accord in one place; suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, cloven tongues like as of fire sat upon each of them, and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
  • It is not enough to bring people out of Egypt; Egypt must be gotten out of the people — the patience of the saints requires the Holy Ghost living in us.

Scriptures: Acts 1:4-5; Acts 2:1-4

In Your Patience Possess Ye Your Souls

  • Paul returns to patience across his letters: the things written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope, and the God of patience and consolation grants us to be likeminded one toward another (Romans 15:4-6).
  • The signs of an apostle were wrought among the Corinthians in all patience, in signs, wonders, and mighty deeds (2 Corinthians 12:12); and Paul glories in the Thessalonians for their patience and faith in all their persecutions and tribulations that they endure (2 Thessalonians 1:3-4).
  • Hebrews presses the need: 'For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise... Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.'
  • The sermon closes on Jesus' own words from the temple prophecy — 'In your patience possess ye your souls' — pictured as a great safe: the soul is the prized possession, and patience is the safe it is kept in, out of the tempter's reach; the invitation follows to repent, be baptized in his name, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.

you with the Holy Ghost tonight Hallelujah Glory Glory well let me move I'll quickly but give honor where honor is due thank you Pastor Whitley for mightily ministering to us today what wonderful word and what a reminder of Direction and staying in the old past and having new feet another generation of Believers coming on I want to proceed if you would allow me to with without any other explanations but simply give you some scripture the Book of James the first chapter the Book of James the first chapter James writing from Jerusalem to Christians out in the outer area pins these words James a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ to the 12 tribes which are scattered abroad greetings my brethren count it all joy when you fall into divers Temptation now that's not a great introduction is it he says greetings and then he just gets right to the point he said get happy about Temptations now if you have any doubt where Temptations come from remember when right after Jesus was baptized he went into the Wilderness and the Bible said the tempter the devil The tempter Temptations come from the tempor so he said count it all joy when Temptations are coming knowing this that the Trine of your faith worketh patience but let patience have her perfect work that you may be perfect and entire wanting nothing for a few moments tonight I would speak to you on this subject the patience of the Saints the patience of the Saints let's pray God I thank you for your presence that we just feel so mighy in this house Lord thank you for re receiving Our Praise Lord thank you for the mighty move of the Holy Ghost that we're experience and in this house Lord if there's one who's not yet received your presence and your spirit in their life I pray that you would reach down and convict their heart stir them and change them fill them with your spirit let all that we do give you praise honor and glory in Jesus name we pray amen the patience of the Saints we live live in an impatient Society from grocery lines to traffic lights our supposed enlightened efficient computer enhanced existence seems to have only created more conflict frustration anxiety and unfill unfulfilled human satisfaction this leads many and most to impatience we have microwave ovens instant pudding fast food and Minute Rice yet we find ourselves turning to fast acting Tums and rollage prac and Omni prosen even if you try to use your credit card it rushes you it says swipe quickly and now that's not even fast enough it says tap we have super highways fast cars bullet trains supersonic planes and you guess it bigger traffic jams and longer lines waiting on public transportation impatience is at a premium in our human existence I can personally attest to a need for patience while driving I've had the experience of driving in Atlanta Chicago New York City Los Angeles Nashville and yes West Knoxville at 5:00 we have need of patience and our text said let patience have her perfect work patience defined as the capacity to accept or tolerate delay trouble or suffering without getting angry angry or upset Lord give me patience and give me patience right now I read that impatience can negatively affect Health by causing increased stress levels leading to potential physical and mental health issues like high blood pressure heart disease anxiety depression disruption of sleep weakened immune systems and poor dece decision making ability due to a rush to judgment essentially the constant feeling of being on edge can take a toll on overall well-being we need patience Nica marus left this list of 10 negative impacts of impatience on your life and why it's important to manage number one it ruins relationships it hinders career growth it causes Stress and Anxiety it decreases Focus impatient Li impatience limits creativity it causes bad decisions it causes health problems it limits opportunity and it it impedes personal growth and it causes regret it impatience does all of that to our humanity is it any wonder the psalmist said in Psalms 27:14 wait on the Lord be of good courage and he shall strengthen thy heart wait I say on the Lord Proverbs 20:22 stated say not I will recompense evil but wait on the Lord and he shall save thee we used to sing an old song they would put it in a minor key and some of you folks will remember this it said when the spirit of the Lord moves within my my heart I will dance like David dance anybody dare to lift your hand and say you remember that song soal Securities close by well I don't know if I can dance like David but let me ask you can you have patience like David for David said it this way in Psalms 401 he said I waited patiently for the Lord and He inclined to unto me and I heard my cry some of us we want to wait on the Lord but we're impatient when we're waiting on him verse three let us know that the Trine of your faith or our faith worketh patience what this simply means is we want to Proclaim that we are people of Faith but we might deduce from this passage until our faith is tried unto patience we do not truly know if we have faith or patience if our fleshly desires and wants are the things that make us impatient our lack of faith can be directly connected to our lack of patience as well I would say it this way if we do not have the patience of the Saints we likely have the impatience of the ANS God give me patience verse four stated let patience have her perfect work that you may be perfect and entire wanting nothing boy that sounds like a good life be perfect entire and complete wanting nothing then you need to be patient patient Works patience works for Perfection and completeness however the patience that we speak of tonight is the patience that not all the world can understand because our message is in is entitled the patience of the Saints and it's quite simple Revelation 14:12 said it this way here is the patience of the Saints here are they that keep the Commandments of God and the faith of Jesus two attributes of the patience of the Saints they keep the Commandments of God and they keep the faith of Jesus so many of the frustrations of our Liv lives could be avoided if we would see simply keep the Commandments of God think about it Exodus enumerated the top 10 if you will Thou shalt have no other gods before me if we would stop letting anything in our life be bigger than God we could get a patience in our life instead of an impatience too many times even we the Believers allow other things to get bigger than God in our lives he said thou shallal have no other gods before me the second commandment Thou shalt not make unto thee any Graven image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above or that is in the earth beneath or that is in the water under the Earth Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them nor serve them for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God he's speaking of Idols oh Pastor Idol I don't have any little statues that I'm bowing down to have you ever heard of movie Idols music Idols athletes who become Idols political idols and yes religious personalities that we would want to make Idols I'm here to tell you Thou shalt have no other gods before me Thou shalt not bow down to anything else I'm here to tell you if you want to have the patience of the the Saints you got to have God first in everything you do it's just that simple number three says Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain Jesus Christ is not a by word it's a holy word it's a holy name that we should reverence we must not ever take in vain the name of God we must not ever find ourselves trivializing the name that we have so wonderfully had revealed to us remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy the Sabbath day was a day of rest we're living in such a society that we work 247 we work seven days a week 24 hours a day no one takes the time that's in this this socalled civilized world to have a time of rest God decree pray there should be a day of rest there should be a time of rest now understand uh Sundays we traditionally call our Sabbath day and I honor Sunday uh but you know Sunday for most preachers is a work day sister Jamie and I joked several years ago the choir relearned a song that Bishop and his brother Bobby used to singing that every day will be Sunday by by and I said Lord have mercy I don't know if I'll be able to handle that but there should be a setting apart time for every one of us to rest scripture and biblical one of the Ten Commandments there should be a rest time now he didn't say you going to rest six days a week you know that's not even government work but there should be a rest time for our flesh and here's the Commandment with promise honor thy father and thy mother that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee why are we teaching about leadership begins in the home right now this is part of understanding that hierarchy of honoring those that have gone before us what what a beautiful Revelation today that brother Whitley preached about knowing those who have gone before us and paav the way and honoring those things it's essential that we know who our fathers are some of us have spiritual fathers and mothers that have led us into the truth and you know the the bad thing to see boy it's sure bad to see when Mom and Dad turn into children again thank you Generations that's gone before me that's held the line that's held the standard that's held on the Holiness and righteousness and you haven't changed and tried to go some different direction I want to honor my father and mother both naturally and those who are our spiritual Guides of another generation why because it gives us longevity of life we're talking about the patience of the Saints commandment six said Thou shalt not kill complete interpretation means Thou shalt not murder listen folks I don't care what political party says what social Norm accepts abortion is murder abortion violates the sixth commandment the taking and murdering of life Thou shalt not commit adultery a relationship outside the framework of marriage is adultery but you see our society is saying it's okay to lust to have perversion to have pornography H oh I I I've got to I as well go here now if we're going to be politically incorrect let's go all the way okay pastor Whitley so Apple today mentioned and we refer back because God starts affirming and confirming some things about staying on course and gentleman that got lost in the Sahara Desert I had a little thing that I had copied and I'll tell it to you rather than read the whole thing but it talked about in giving directions the use of a compass and direction that if your direction is off by one degree just one degree in a 100 yards you'll be off a little over five feet now that don't sound like much unless your football team steps out of bounds in that 100 yards you won't replay and demand that you got crooked officials right I went on to see that if you're measurement is off one degree and you were going to drive let's see what was it if you were going to drive well a after a mile your location that you were trying to achieve you would be off 92.2 feet that's from starting out one degree offline if you wanted to travel from San Francisco to Los Angeles and you off by one degree you'll be off by six miles now that may not sound like much but did you know the Pacific Ocean is right on the edge of Los Angeles and San Francisco if you went six miles west of either one one of those folks you're going to be in the ocean just by being off one degree in your direction traveling to the Moon a rocket going to the Moon if it was off by one degree would me Miss by 4,169 Miles by being off by one degree well preacher thank you for the statistics what does that have to do with us when we get out of line from the Commandments of God there are some things that may seem small in the beginning I'd give you this example when scripture is in the Old Testament gives directions like for a man not to wear that which pertaineth to a woman told you I wasn't going to be politically correct or for a woman not to wear that wh which pertaineth to a man oh preacher that just that's just Old Testament stuff we let's get off one degree let's go a few Generations from scripture now now we got bees that want to look like birds and birds that want to look like bees bees want to have their Stingers removed and B for crying out loud we need to stay on cold course just follow the Commandments of God let the Commandments of God direct us and lead us we don't need to get off [Applause] course keep his Commandments if you want to have the patience of the Saints stay on course Thou shalt not steal Thou shalt not bear false witness in other words don't lie tell the truth be truthful Thou shalt not covet in other words don't yearn to possess those things that belongs to others yet our supposed enlightened Society is afraid that those 10 statements placed on the wall of our schools or placed in our public buildings our cour houses is going to some way damage and offend somebody I'm here to tell you the Commandments of God must not be offensive to us that's what gives us the patience of the Saints no wonder we have become such an impatient Society you see we're talking about understanding some of these principles of of simple biblical guidance and Direction you see we we already and I I apologize to our folks upstairs already because invariably I'll give you a list of scriptures and then I'll come up with something different so if you don't find it that's fine but we must embrace the scriptural understanding of what the grace of God really is is you see the book of Jude talked about those who crept in unawares and changed the grace of God to lasciviousness now Titus said it this way Titus 211 and you don't have this upstairs I didn't give you this I'm sure you may find it Titus 2:11 said for the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men teaching us that denying ungodliness the grace of God is not a get out of jail free card that you can do anything you want to and his grace is going to take care of it it said the grace of God brings us to Salvation teaching us that denying ungod godliness and worldly less we should live soberly righteously and godly where in heaven no in this present world the patience of the Saints will find some folks living soberly righteously in this present world you see the second attribute after obeying the Commandments is to have the faith of Jesus it didn't say Have Faith In Jesus it said you need to have the faith of Jesus Jesus told his disciples if you have faith say to this mountain be thou removed and cast into the sea and it shall be done that's the kind of Faith Jesus had in another instance he said if you have faith as of a grain of mustard seed you shall say to this mountain M be thou removed and cast into the sea but you know what we like to quote that about faith but you know what it says right after that it said this kind goeth out not but by prayer and fasting there's something we have to do with the grace of God and having faith in God but he was telling us we're going to have our faith tried that's the only way you're going to have the patience of the Saints Galatians 2:16 said this knowing that a man is not justified by The Works of the law but by the faith of Jesus Christ even we have believed in Jesus Christ that we might be justified by the Faith of Christ and not by The Works of the law now is he saying you don't have to obey the Ten Commandments that he just said you that brought about the patience of the Saints of course not he's explaining great gra that the grace of God is that vehicle that leads us and takes us to Salvation God's grace is not salvation it's the guidepost it's the direction that takes us to Salvation he goes on and says verse 17 but if while we seek to be justified by Christ we ourselves are also are found Sinners is therefore Christ the minister of sin God forbid you see if you want to enact Grace in your life here's what has to happen Romans said it this way Romans 5 and one therefore being justified by faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ but whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein We Stand rejoice in hope of glory and not only so but we glory in tribulations also knowing that tribulation work with patience we're going to go through some stuff and patience experience and experience hope and hope maketh not ashamed because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts how by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us let me tell you if you want to have the patience of the Saints you need to get filled with the Holy Ghost you need Christ Living in you tonight yeah notice this easy progression for when we were yet without Strength In Due Time Christ died for the ungodly access by faith under grace tribulation working patience patience experience we're learning from some mistakes experience hope hope by the Holy Ghost now this idea of the Holy Ghost and the the term holy in general it it kind of throws people they're they're scared of holy the the Bible uses the term holy 611 times Bible talks about holy things in fact it's called The Holy Bible there's a holy God the Bible talks about a holy city but many struggle with the idea of holy and Holiness you see we don't have a holy dictionary there's only one word of God and God's word is Holy and there's only one Holy Ghost Casper might have been friendly but he ain't holy and the Holy Ghost is Christ Living in us well how do I enact that man I'm glad you asked in Acts 1 and4 that said and being assembled together with them commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem but do what wait for the promise of the Father which said he this is Jesus words ye have heard of me for John truly baptized with water but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence let me tell you we've got to have the Holy Ghost living inside us you see we can get numbers in we can get folks we can bring people out of Egypt but can we get Egypt out of the people unless you get Holiness in your life you may have come from Egypt but you got to get the Egypt out of you and you got to get the Holy Ghost in you after they waited what happened Acts 2:4 says and rather acts 21 says and when the day of Pentecost was fully come they were all in one Accord and in one place they' been waiting they'd been patient and suddenly there came a sound from Heaven as of a rushing Mighty Wind and it filled all the house where they were sitting and there appeared to them clothing tongues like as a fire and it sat upon each of them and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and begin to speak with other tongues how as The Spirit gave the utans let me tell you here tonight you need the Holy Ghost in you to give you the patience of the Saints you need the Holy Ghost reigning and working in your life don't you be afraid of hey I make no apologies there was a reason folks were running and dancing and shouting and praising I've got a reason I've got a reason I like your song Praise Team it it said uh something about ask me about it I've been out to the mall they'll have these kiosks set up and they'll say ask me about my product I usually go way away from those folks or they're saying have you tried this thank you know thank you know and you know that's the way a lot of folks are about the Holy Ghost that's why a lot of folks they're they they haven't experienced it and and they're a little bit afraid to ask what's going listen I got a reason just ask me just ask me what the Lord has done for me how much time have you got let me tell you all the things he's done for me let me tell you how he's blessed me you see you can develop the faith of Jesus in you if you've experienced some things if you've been through some things you see musicians get ready I'm I'm going to head toward the end I I don't want to violate one of those Commandments by saying I wasn't going to preach long and then doing it Paul had much to say about the patience of the Saints Romans 15:4 he said for whatsoever things were written a four time were written for our learning that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures my have hope now the god of patience and consolation Grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus that ye may with one mind and of one mouth glorify God even the father of our Lord Jesus Christ he told the Corinthians this in 2 Corinthians 12:12 truly the sign of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience in signs and wonders and mighty Mighty Deeds man you talking about Good Company patience is right up there with signs wonders and mighty Deeds he told the Thessalonians in 2 Thessalonians 1:3 we are bound to thank God always for you Brethren that is as it is meat because that your faith growth exceedingly and the charity of every one of you all all toward each other aboundeth so that we ourselves glory in in the Churches of God for your patience and faith and all your persecutions tribulations that ye endure do you see a Common Thread here Paul isn't tell everybody it's always going to be Rosy everything's always going to be Sunshine he said there's going to be tribulations the word repeats it time and time but that's what that's part of the faith building and that's part of the understanding that we will have the patience of the Saints when we allow tribulation to build our faith stand with me he went on to talk to Timothy Timothy he said said in following after righteousness godliness Faith love patience meekness fight the good fight of Faith lay hold on Eternal get a hold of eternal life here what I'm saying tonight this who was it that mixed the two analogies between rocket rocket science and brain surgery said this is not rocket surgery this is not all that tough there's a simple plan why because it's just that easy I need the Holy Ghost you need the Holy Ghost I need Jesus living in me you need Jesus living in you that'll bring the patience of the Saints Hebrews said in Hebrews 10 for ye have need of patience that after you have done the will of God you might receive the promise for yet a little while and he that shall come will come and will not tear God's coming back for the Saints don't be impatient time's coming now the just shall live by faith but notice but if any man draw back my soul shall have no pleasure in him but we are not of them who draw back under predition sadly I've seen way too many who've walked with God for a long time and at the time they need to be with him the most they draw back they draw back into predition ungodliness but of them that believe to the saving of the soul the impatient draw back into predition Jesus was prophesying sign about the temple they were bragging on the beauty of the temple and Jesus said this Temple's going to be destroyed he said there won't be one stone on top of the other and they said well Master uh what are the signs this going now understand uh several years ago I had the privilege of of going to Jerusalem and visiting the old site of the temple that they're speaking of and there were Stones amazing stones that had once been the temple itself not the walls but had been the temple itself and it still baffles archaeologists and scientists how they were able to move those stones and once have them set in place but the thing that was amazing to see it they were scattered everywhere some were underground some were sticking up out of ground they they they none of them were stacked on top of the other just as had been prophesied they said Master When shall this happen what are the signs then said he unto them Nations shall rise against nation and Kingdom against Kingdom and great earthquak shall be in diverse places and famines and pestilence and fearful sights and Great Signs shall there be from heaven but before all this these they shall lay hands on you persecute you deliver you up to the synagogues that means there would be religious persecution and under prisons that' be civil persecution being brought before Kings and rulers for my name's sake and it shall turn to you a testimony so here's please notice for these words are his disciples and I hope we are all still disciples of Jesus he said settle it therefore in your heart there's some stuff we need to settle Holiness needs to be settled in your heart Holiness is a principle you see once you settle the principle of Holiness in your life then implementation won't be a problem the reason some folks can't live holy they haven't settled Holiness in their heart yet he said settle it in your heart not to meditate before what ye shall answer for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist and ye shall be betrayed both by parents and Brethren and kin folks and friends and some of you shall they cause to be put to death and ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake there shall not a hair of your head perish now wait he says I'm going to die but your the hair of your head's not going to be what was he saying because he wasn't speaking of just fleshly man he was speaking of eternal life but here's what I want us to get a hold of and praise team get ready verse 19 says this in your patience Jesus words possess ye your soul if I could give a visual of at least I can understand the patience of the Saints is a great big safe and I put my prized possessions in my patience my most prized possession is my soul I've got to keep the patience of the Saints in my position that it cannot be taken by the tempter it can can't be taken by some fleshly desire and Temptation I've got to have my soul in the safe of patience so tonight I would ask every person in this house to look at in your spiritual mirror at yourself and I'd like for us in just a moment to come forward to pray a prayer of God I want to have the patience of the Saints if you don't have the Holy Ghost that's where you need to start you need to say Lord I I want to be filled with the Holy Ghost you should have already repented of your sins you should have said Lord I'm sorry for my sin and I want to be filled with the Holy Ghost you haven't been baptized in his name we have water we have clothes for men women boys and girls we'll baptize you the only Bible Way in the name of Jesus and you can start enjoying all of the Privileges of this life and the life to come by having the patience of the Saints if you want to have the patience of the Saints would you come forth in prayer right now would you step out and gather around this Altar for a season of prayer Saints I ask you to be aware if there's somebody that wants the Holy Ghost I don't want them to pray alone pray with them that God would fill them with the Holy Ghost come unashamed come unafraid let the Holy Ghost guide you direct you into the patience of the Saints Hallelujah
