Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
This is the Lord’s doing
- The sermon opens with Psalm 118 read at the head — the gates of righteousness, the stone which the builders refused become the head stone of the corner — and the subject is announced: this is the Lord's doing.
- The psalm's own refrain assigns the credit: let Israel, the house of Aaron, and all them that fear the Lord say that his mercy endureth forever; a culture that wants someone to blame for everything is answered by blaming deliverance on the Lord.
Scriptures: Psalm 118:19-24; Psalm 118:1-4
The Lord on my side
- The psalmist called upon the Lord in distress and was set in a large place; the Lord is on my side, I will not fear what man can do unto me, and the Lord taketh my part with them that help me.
- It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man or in princes, and what compasses the believer about like bees is destroyed in the name of the Lord — the name of Jesus is to be invoked over the situations that surround us.
- The preacher illustrates the Lord taking his part from his years coaching and serving as the school's administrator, when order was restored on the field by the Lord's hand and not his own.
Scriptures: Psalm 118:5; Psalm 118:6; Psalm 118:7; Psalm 118:8-9; Psalm 118:10; Psalm 118:11; Psalm 118:12
The stone in Acts 4
- In him we live and move and have our being; and when Peter and John were asked by what power or by what name the impotent man was healed, Peter answered that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom they crucified and God raised from the dead, the man stands whole.
- The stone set at nought by the builders is the psalm's rejected stone become the head of the corner — the same saying Jesus himself delivered in Luke — and neither is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven whereby we must be saved.
Scriptures: Acts 17:28; Acts 4:7; Acts 4:8-10; Acts 4:11; Acts 4:12; Luke 20:17-18
Suffering inside the Lord’s doing
- Sometimes the Lord's doing includes a season of suffering, as Daniel and the three Hebrew children went through rather than around; Isaiah's servant was despised and rejected, bore our griefs, and was wounded for our transgressions, and with his stripes we are healed.
- At the cross 'it is finished' spoke the finality of sin and death, not Christ's defeat; and Timothy's charge is applied — be not ashamed of the testimony of the Lord, but be a partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God.
Scriptures: Isaiah 53:3-5; John 19:30; 2 Timothy 1:8-9

wonderfully uh donated during the colder season we prepared over 100 backpacks that uh we helped to issue uh through the war forming centers in the city of Knoxville from First Apostolic Church to help the homeless in our community and uh she called it fac serves well sometimes you know uh in the in the mall they have what they call popup kiosk it just pops up and all of a sudden there's something there for a little while well we had a a popup challenge for one of our very own a faithful attender of the church uh officer whsb Antoine went on to be with the Lord very unex expectedly and uh we were asked to host the celebration of life service and let me tell you from our uh uh support staff our ushers our greeters our technology staff our musical staff uh the ladies of the church that joined in to help minister to that family you were absolutely incredible I do not have enough words to say thank you our many of the elite of of our community was here the mayor of the city of Knoxville the police chief the fire chief and uh uh so many uh different individuals we had city council persons here uh sister Ronda Lee was here representing uh County Commission and uh thank you thank you so much for presenting First Apostolic church I had a pastor from a uh another church who was here for the service he worded it this way he said I felt like the queen of Sheba uh when she first went into Solomon's Court he she he said the half has not been told of this church he said uh and again uh roughly quoting from the Queen of Sheba he said the way the attendants come in and go out he said the organization the care the folks uh available to do all the jobs and he said the Excellence that this assembly is presenting to our community he said I I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate it we we had several officials that pledged to us of course our liaison is none other than our own Lieutenant mopin that's part of our assembly graduate of our school and part of this assembly uh Lieutenant mopin said he had several within their ranks who said I want to come back and visit First Apostolic church and that's what we're about we want to minister to our community so folks feel free to come and worship with us and find the same savior that we found so uh excuse me for taking a few moments but thank you so much for everyone for your contribution to making that event what it was thank you so much I want to take us to the word of the Lord this morning I would call your attention to the Book of Psalms the8th chapter Psalms 118 while you're turning there I do give honor to our uh Bishop our pastoral staff our leadership all who work so diligently thank you for facilitating and making this available that we can Minister and thank you for your guidance and Direction Psalms 118 let's begin reading at verse number 19 open to me the gates of righteousness I will go into them and I will praise the Lord this gate of the Lord into which the righteous shall enter I will praise theee for thou has heard me and art become my salvation the stone which the builders refused notice that the stone which the builders refused is become The Headstone of the corner and please notice verse 23 this is the Lord's doing it's marvelous in our eyes this is the day which the Lord ha made we not I we will rejoice and be glad in it this is the day that the Lord ha made we will rejoice and be glad in it for a few moments I would speak to you on this subject this is the Lord's doing let's pray father we love you we thank you so much for the privilege of being in your house I thank you for every individual who's joined us here today Lord for the dedication for the effort to be in your house now Lord I Thank you most of all because you are here Lord please accept our praise please accept all that we bring to you as sacrifices of praise and Lord pour out your blessings and your spirit Upon Us Lord if there's one in this house who's not yet repented of their sin Lord if there's one who's not been filled with your spirit if there's one that's not taking in your name on in baptism savior I pray that you would move us to repentance move us to acting on your word and Lord fulfill us with your salvation plan for all this we're grateful and thankful in Jesus name we pray amen this is the Lord's doing one of the common exhortations that you hear in our culture today is take responsibility for your own actions take responsibility for your own actions yet it seems that more and more others want to regulate the details of everyone's life this appears to be so if something goes wrong we've got somebody to blame we are coining terms like Drive responsibly eat responsibly text respons responsibly even drink responsibly that's an oxymoron of a statement if you ask how can you drink responsibly but that's for another message another time but we seem to be trying to hedge our bets if you will that if something goes wrong we've got someone or something to blame it on we want to hold somebody responsible because things couldn't just happen you I I read an article here while back that here in the United States there is no longer a manufacturer of plastic fuel cans and the reason there's no longer a manufacturer of plastic fuel cans in the United States there have been so many governmental and safety and oosha restrictions put on having a gas can manufactured and there's so much liability that the companies had to go out of business because everybody that didn't have enough sense but to pour gas Lan out of a bucket on a fire sued them now I know that sounds cold blooded but it I'm not going to ask for a show of hands but really and truly anybody that's in here that's ever had one of those red plastic gas cans have you ever taken the time to read all the directions that's embossed on those cans I haven't but I learned I was taught a long time ago if you put gasoline on a fire and they they've even changed you you've got flammable material non flammable material inflammable material and noninflammable either it'll flam or it won't okay but it has gotten so regulated that we just import it from China to use it now I'm not being political that's just a fact but understand we want a reason to blame somebody else if there's Misfortune in the realm of politics notice many politicians for sure want to take credit for anything that happened in their Administration but oh if there's a problem blame it on the previous administration of the other party but in our text today the psalmist is telling of the great mercies of God that have been delivered and granted to his people the Bible commentary of Jameson foset and brown said this of this passage the psalmist speaks as representative of the people just delivered by Yahweh from Babylon it was probably sung at the Feast of Tabernacles celebrated for seven days after the restoration of the city walls and gates in 445 BC so this was was a celebratory song and notice if you go back in Psalms 118 and go to the first verse here's how the song went it said oh give thanks unto the Lord for he is good because his mercy endureth forever let Israel now say that his mercy endureth forever let the house of Aaron now say that his mercy endureth forever ever let them now that fear the lord say that his mercy endureth forever are you seeing a theme that seems to be carrying through this if you want to know why we've been delivered blame it on the Lord that's why we've been delivered because his mercy endureth forever if you've been delivered today you need to blame it on the lord it's his doings if you're in this house and you have not yet been delivered you need to be delivered today and let the Lord do it I can't do it the praise team can't do it nobody in this house can do it but if you'll let the mercy of the Lord come into your life and come into your heart let me tell you you can have his Mercy because it endureth forever Hallelujah who deserves the credit for Israel's deliverance from Babylon who deserves the honor for the walls being rebuilt notice how it's itemized here in Psalms 118 1-4 verse one said give thanks to the Lord for he's good for his Mercy endures forever and then verse two said this let the people now say collectively if we know the Lord is in charge and being Merc ful we should not be ashamed to Proclaim his mercies First Apostolic Church nothing that we have ever accomplished could have been done without the mercies of God anything any credit that goes it's not anything I've done not anything that you've done but his mercies what caused the blessings that what's caused all that we enjoy it was his Mercy he said let the people say it let the people Proclaim it then he goes on and says let the House of Aaron now say his mercy endureth forever that was the spiritual leadership I'm preaching to me now preaching to all the spiritual leaders the pastors the ministers the elders the praise team folks that lead in worship man don't get to thinking that you're all that in a bag of chips man when when the move of God takes place in the house of the Lord and conviction starts falling and souls come for repentance don't think it was because of my pretty message or your beautiful singing you better thank God it's his Mercy that's afforded us that privilege he gave us any abilities we might have he afforded us the honor and the privilege of speaking his word of singing his songs we better know where it came from it was his Mercy that caused it he said let the house of Aaron the leadership that that's spiritual let them that fear the lord anybody that's got any sense that understands that the fear of the Lord is reverential respect it's not that we're going around afraid he's going to zap us but it's a pro proper reverential respect that we should have for the Lord and Proclaim that his mercy endureth forever this is the Lord's doing verse five then said I called upon the Lord and Destro ress hey let me tell you if you hadn't figured that out real simple formula you get in distress call on the Lord first don't let the Lord be your last option let that be the first thing you do is oh Jesus I'm needing a touch I'm in distress I'm needing your mercy right now he said I called upon the Lord in distress what happened the Lord answered me and he sent me in a large place now what a large place means he relocated me you know sometimes the Lord has to deliver us out of some environments and change our location if there's things that's been beating you up there's sometimes you call on the Lord he say you know maybe you I'm going to change your job I'm going to find you a a better place so you can be in the house of the Lord more than you used to be that's that's what he said I called upon the Lord in distress and the Lord answered me and set me in a large place this was a personal testimony of the psalmist he changed my environment then notice the rhetorical statement that he makes he's asking a question and answering it he said the Lord is on my side I will not fear what can man do unto me if we don't find ourselves careful we'll get so much in our flesh that when we're in distress we're having situations in our life we'll forget what God can do for us if we'll call on him oh sometimes we're expecting some dog and pony show smoking mirrors and boom something's going to happen sometimes God works instantaneously other times he methodically starts working in your situation and starts working things out a day at a time an hour at a time a second at a time if you'll just trust in the Lord because his mercy endureth forever sometimes it's not overnight sometimes it may take a month it may take a year but if you've sacrificed and you've done somebody hear me I know folks out here your testimony you sacrifice to be where you are right now things didn't change overnight but you kept on trusting you kept on believing you kept on praying and God is opening the door why because his Mercy his mercy endureth forever oh hallelujah hallelujah verse seven he said the lord taketh my part son if I'm going to get in a conflict I want the Lord taking my part I don't want to be in this by myself I I I want the I may as well confess a little more before you I want you several years ago we here at Apostolic Christian School we compete in athletics and I was coaching one of our Middle School flag football teams and uh it was a hotly contested game and couple of the kids one on our team one on other other team we were playing flag football supposed to be quote non- contct and it got a little bit rough with non- contct and two boys it was accidental but two two boys one from their team one from our team ran together and had a collision and the the young man from the the team on the other team his father took exception to it and came running out on the field and we were the host school and as the host administrator at the time it was my responsibility if something got out of order that I was supposed to be the administrator and take care of things and the official motioned me said you're going to have to do something about that guy so I mustered up my best courage and I slow walked out to where he was and it I know what it was supposed to sound like I wanted my voice to sound like thunder but I think it sounded more like sir you're going to have to leave the field and the answer that I feared most came he said who's going to to make me minister in the church young pastor at the time with a school and uh I replied I said I guess I am and he kind of bowed up like this then all of a sudden I saw him just kind of Rel relx and turn didn't say word and he started off the field man I was feeling pretty good about myself well hey until I turned around and looked brother Gino Magnus had just started coming to the church if those of you who know brother Gino Magnus he was a linebacker at the University of Tennessee and he could lift all the weights on the bar that we and he had taken about four steps out on the field behind me it wasn't me any of the time let me tell you there's situations that come up don't think you're all that it's the Lord that's taking your part it's the Lord that's stepping up and stepping out and say that's one of my children he's in distress she called on me and when she called on me I'm going to answer I'm going to bring what they need oh Hallelujah glory the lord taketh my part with them that help me therefore shall I see my desire upon them that hate me he said he even goes on to give a little more instruction he said it is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man do you want to trust in humanity Humanity will let you down man's word man's Integrity will let you down but God is always the merciful god he said it's better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in the princes I would without doing violence to the word of the Lord to tell you do you trust in the government or do you trust in the Lord I'm not anti-government don't get me wrong I feel like we have the greatest Constitution that's ever been written and when our governmental leaders put themselves under the authority of God we have the greatest governmental system that there is but if you expect the governmental system to take care of all your W ills all your troubles you're going to always disappointed be disappointed he said it's better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes but you know sometimes preacher I just feel like I'm surrounded I feel like I'm encompassed well he this is what he said verse 10 he said all nations Compass me about but in the name of the Lord will I destroy them I don't know how it's going to happen but those things that surrounding me I'm going to be victorious why because this is the Lord's doing and his mercy endureth forever right verse 11 they Compass me about yay they Compass me about he said that twice but in the name of the Lord I will destroy them you see there's sometimes you need to invoke and invoke the name of Jesus over some situations too many times we're trying to handle it ourselves and we need to say in the name of Jesus I need an answer in the name of Jesus I rebuke this thing that's coming against me There's Something About the Name of Jesus that providing name that healing [Applause] name Oh Glory I like verse 12 if you like descriptive language I get this one it said they compassed me about like bees I still have a vivid memory I don't remember a lot from being little but there's something I do remember Mom and Dad I remember stepping in a yellow jacket Nest there a hole in the ground and as a kid I was out playing I think y'all were working on a trailer we had at the time and I stepped in a Yellow Jacket's nest and when I pull my foot out they compassed me about let's just say it that way I can relate to the driive term that the psalmist is using here he said they they Compass me about like bees they are quenched as the fire of thorns for in the name of the Lord I will destroy them he's reminded us and all that would hear and who are want Deliverance if you'll turn your life over to Christ not to man's ideology not to governmental leadership but instead say I'm serving Jesus his mercies endureth forever he said this is the Lord's doing it's marvelous in our eyes the Bible Bible commentator Barnes said of this verse this is from the Lord this this is or rather that is it is so to be traced to the Lord alone let me tell you there's things that God has done for me that nobody else could take credit for it that's no brag just fact and if we had testimony service we could be here all day all night and all next week to folks that's in this room that God has done things from you for you that couldn't have been an accident it couldn't have been chance it couldn't have been man it couldn't have been government it had to be God that accomplished it in your life right right you need more evidence all I need to do back right here is just step back and say don't you to look where we're worshiping today I'm not bragging but to God be the glory that a group of First Apostolic Church Believers would pay the tithe and give their offerings no Rich folks in the house I promise you if you are you've been holding out I know where y'all are living I know where I'm living but I know what God has done the Miracles that he has wrought from from miraculously providing brick for us to have this building a a story I won't tell again today but God has done miraculous things he's provided time and time and time again why because his Mercy endured forever we've called on him bishop and I were sitting in the office when we were needing a mirac irle to pay a debt phone rang the miracle had two legs in a voice brother Kennedy called said I don't know why God's dealing with me but I feel led to do something I want to why because people that trust him people that love him his mercies endureth forever this is the Lord's doings Barnes went on to say the deliverance from danger the rising up and the low conditions the change by which he who is rejected was restored to the rightful place all this was to be traced to God Alone act said it this way for in him we live and move and have our being this is his doings let me hasten in the book of Acts the fourth chapter Peter and John had just prayed the prayer of faith for the healing of the impotent man the crippled and instead of everybody rejoicing the Lo local religious super Pious leaders that were intertwined with the government called them forth said now we need to know by what power and by what name you've done done this who did this who's responsible for this man you know they they were looking for liabilities greater than a gas can they were they wanted to find out what what's going on here how because it was eroding their Authority that somebody was doing healings Now understand there was a Crossroads here for Peter and John as well Peter and John had the opportunity when they were asked to say man we did good didn't we fact you know I we may get us a caravan and put in Peter and John's healing campaign we going to go on the road with this bad boy we you know man look at us uh what's this worth to you uh what will you give me we need to take up an offering quick because we're healers but when you're filled with the Holy Ghost that's not the way you answer a question like that that verse seven said by what power or by what name have you done this verse eight then Peter filled with the Holy Ghost said unto them ye rulers of the people and Elders of Israel if we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent Man by what means he is made whole be it known unto you all right and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth whom ye crucified whom God ha raised from the dead even by him do this man stand here before yah he got a little message in a little salvation message and a little crucifixion message when he answered he said it was by Jesus that you crucified that you rejected that's who healed this man now you remember the psalmist hundreds of years ago in our text stated about the stone that the Builder rejected notice what understand Psalms Jesus hadn't been born yet Jesus hadn't come yet but verse 11 in Acts he said this is the stone which was set at not of your you Builders which has become the head of the corner [Music] whoa preacher are you saying that Jesus was prophesied about in The Book of Psalms you better know I am if you'll read the scripture you'll find Jesus in the Old Testament just like you find him in the New Testament but you see it was just a new dispensation it was coming to be the psalmist said the stone which the builder refused is become The Headstone of the corner this is the Lord's doing in fact if you read uh through the New Testament if you'll find Jesus time and time again in the synoptic gospel referring to the stone that build that the Builder rejected in Matthew 21:42 and Mark 1210 through1 and Luke 20 17 and 18 He fact and Luke he said it this way and he beheld them and said what is this then that is written the stone which the Builder rejected he's reading from the psalm now the same has become the head of the corner question mark whatsoever shall fall upon the stone shall be broken but on whomsoever it shall fall it will grind him to powder there was an explanation being given who was giving this healing who was doing this healing the stone that the Builder rejected had now become the Chief Cornerstone Jesus had revealed himself and healing was taking place in his name for Peter and John went on to say neither is there salvation in any other for there is none other name under Heaven given among men whereby we must be saved Let Me Tell You Not only was the impotent man healed there was a Sal ation name in the name of Jesus preached and notice this now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John I hate to put myself in the same no I don't I'm glad to and perceive they were unlearned and ignorant men some folks think that all this religious mumbo jumbo they'll call it that we're going through about serving Jesus is for the ignorant and unlearned I'm here to tell you no matter your education level or like thereof you will not have a complete education until you know the fullness of who Jesus is till you know him in his Mercy don't you be ashamed don't you be afraid to Proclaim as Peter and John did of who Jesus really is that he's the Healer he's the merciful god it said they must marveled and they took knowledge of them well they took knowledge of unlearned and Eiger men you better know they did why they had been with Jesus let me ask you when you're out in the world dealing with all the challenges of the world can folks tell if you've been with Jesus have you been on your knees have you talked to the Lord before you started your day when you find a distressful situation are you handling it like flesh or have you been with Jesus it said they took knowledge of them that they had been with Jesus and beholding the man which was healed standing with kind of hard to argue with that that he's healed imped man been crippled he's standing there in front of how you going to argue with that they could say nothing against it the healing was the Lord's doings the skeptic silence spoke spoke volumes affirming what had taken place praise team musicians get ready again everybody I'll think I'm quitting if y'all come up here so let me ask you what's the Lord been doing for you some Skeptics might ask well what's he really doing during seasons of economic recession and depression how in the world have you been blessed with the meager sums that some of you are making by paying your tithe and giving your offing all you can say this is the Lord's doing I've just been faithful this is the Lord's doings man why go to all the trouble for all this worship and praise and Technology yeah we can do without that let me tell you we're not going to be stoic and dead we're going to use everything that God gives us and any resource he gives us to praise and worship him it's the Lord's doing why do you have ha faith for healing and miracles instead of doubt and despair because it's the Lord's doing why build a church by faith rather than get alone and go in debt because it's the Lord's doings the Bible time and time and time again we find God allowed his people to be victorious against seemingly insurmountable odds just so everyone would know this is the Lord's doings Elijah one Prophet against 400 prophets of Baal he was called to build a fire so Elijah want to make sure that all understood that God was doing this work so he had him tear down the altar to Bell built his own Altar and he did what any good boy scout would do to build a fire he got water and poured on it you read it for yourself buckets barrels rather barrels of water were poured on the altar then he prayed a prayer a simple prayer God sent fire down and consumed the altar consumed the sacrifice was there any doubt whose doings it was when he built a fire with water Gideon's Army of 32,000 would be reduced to 300 mil men who were Brave just so there would be no doubt when they went into battle it wasn't the might of the army but it was the might of the 300 men's God we all have studied well the story of David versus Goliath the underdog David using a sling but in that story in particular I would point out one thing that maybe we don't dwell on as much when David volunteered and told Saul don't let your heart fail I I'll go out and fight Goliath the first thing that Saul did after he had his Warrior to face the giant was said well I want to help you out I'm going to give you my AR armor I want you to use my methods use use my armor Bible says that he put a helmet of brass on his head he also armed him with a coat of mail in my mind's eye descriptively I can see this young Shepherd boy who was used to using his dexterity and his ability with a sling suddenly weighed down with a helmet that was too big you could almost spin it on his head armor that was weighting him down his knees nearly buckling couldn't have lifted the sword if he' have wanted wanted to I mean Saul was a head and shoulders taller than any of the other men but yet Saul who would not do the fighting wanted to tell him what method to use to fight David beautifully answered he said I cannot go with these for I have not proved them and David put them off let me tell you there are some who would tell us that then in the day that we live we need to change our Doctrine our methods and our modes to fit in with society when we are facing some of the greatest Giants that we've ever faced I'm here to tell you it's no time to stop being Apostolic it's no time to stop being Holiness it's no time to stop stop living a righteous life and try to compromise and change and use methods that already don't work Hallelujah David said no to PA's armor I say no to changing what has worked I want to fight with the word of God I want his mercies to be with me stand with me I take us to the end for some would say Pastor I know you've preached a positive message thus far but I hadn't seen Deliverance yet I'm I'm I'm facing some stuff let me tell you sometimes the Lord's doings are doing includes a season of suffering that's right why would Jesus allow all the degrading ridicule the public humiliation the scourging the beating the sufferings of the crucifixion how could this Poss possibly be the Lord's doing yes sometimes suffering is part of the plan of the Lord's doing might I remind us that Daniel had to go through the Lion's Den he wasn't delivered from ever going there the the three Hebrew children had to go through the fiery furnace they didn't get to avoid it Isaiah said it this way he is despised and rejected of men man A Man of Sorrows acquainted with grief we hid as it was our faces from him he was despised and we esteemed him not surely Heth bore our griefs carried our sorrows yet we did esteem him stricken smitten of God and Afflicted here's why it was the Lord's doings for the suffering of the flesh for he was wounded for our transgressions his injuries to the fleshly humanity of Jesus was for the mistakes that I would make and that you would make he was wounded for our transgressions he was bruised for our iniquities the chastisement of our peace was upon him and with his stripes we are healed let me tell you there was some suffering but the story was not over let me tell you if you've been going through a season that it seems like you're in despair don't you give up don't you quit it's a season and no it's the Lord's doings he is the merciful god and his Mercy endures forever in fact in the Book of John when the humanity would die John 19:30 when Jesus therefore had received the vinegar he said it is finished he bowed his head and he gave up the ghost see preacher there was a defeat but wait what does it really say Jesus said it is finished he didn't say I'm finished we need to be reminded when the flesh the human ity of Jesus drew his last breath made his last statement that said it is finished he was not speaking that he was finished Instead This was a final statement saying the finality of sin and death is finished it's defeated sin will no longer be passed year to year by the blood of sacrifices of animals but instead The Sting of death the finality of death has been relieved because he suffered he's died and Resurrection Day is on the way second Timothy 1:8 said be not therefore ashamed of the testimony of Our Lord nor of me his prisoner Paul telling the Evangelist Timothy be thou partakers of the afflictions of The Gospel According to the power of God who hath saved us and called us with a holy calling not according to our works but according to his own purpose and Grace which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began Allah didn't die for your sins Buddha didn't die for your
