Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
Three days without Jesus
- The head text: Jesus, risen early the first day of the week, appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils; she went and told them that had been with him as they mourned and wept, and they believed not.
- He appeared in another form to two of them as they walked into the country, and the residue believed them neither; afterward he appeared to the eleven as they sat at meat and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart.
- The first order of business after the resurrection was to deal with unbelief among the believers: absence makes the heart grow fonder, but absence from Jesus makes the heart grow hard — it cultivates doubt, suspicion, and cynicism.
Scriptures: Mark 16:9-14
Unbelief at home, and the unteachable spirit
- In his own country they were astonished at his teaching, then reduced him to the carpenter's son, the son of Mary, and were offended at him; a prophet is not without honor but in his own country, among his own kin, and in his own house.
- He could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk and healed them, and he marveled because of their unbelief — unbelief limits the scope of what Jesus can accomplish in a life.
- Being unteachable is a symptom of unbelief: as Pastor Whitley and I share, a minister needs to hear the word of God preached and taught by someone else, because it may be for him.
Scriptures: Mark 6:1-6
Hardness of heart
- Moses, because of the hardness of their hearts, suffered them to put away their wives, but from the beginning it was not so — most broken marriages trace to a hardness of heart that came from unbelief; keep Jesus in your marriage, and do not be unequally yoked in spirit, not only in name.
- Hard-hearted people hold on to things they ought to let go — Pharaoh would not let the people go; some habits, hurts, and ideas must be forgotten and released to stay in the presence of Jesus.
- The Pharisees watched Jesus in the synagogue, where a man had a withered hand, not to see healing but to accuse him; he looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts — more interested in rules than in a man being made whole.
- The psalmist joins what judgment pulls apart: mercy and truth are met together, righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
- Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest — after thy hardness and impenitent heart thou treasurest up wrath against the day of wrath; God will render to every man according to his deeds.
Scriptures: Matthew 19:8; Mark 3:1-5; Psalms (book-only, as spoken); Romans 2:1-5
Back in his presence: boldness, healing, and the name
- Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, answered the rulers: by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
- Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved — and the rulers marveled at the boldness of Peter and John, and took knowledge of them that they had been with Jesus.
- The demoniac among the tombs could not be bound with chains, but the spirits cried out when Jesus stepped in — evil spirits have no place in the presence of Jesus; resist the devil and he will flee.
- The disciples could not cast out the spirit from the man's son, and Jesus answered that this kind comes only by prayer and fasting — not fasting from prayer, but a daily prayer life that talks with Jesus.
Scriptures: Acts 4:8-10, 12-13; Matthew (book-only, as spoken)
The Comforter: Jesus living in you
- The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, shall teach you all things and bring all things to your remembrance; peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you — let not your heart be troubled.
- It is expedient for you that I go away: if I go not away, the Comforter will not come; the fleshly presence has been crucified, resurrected, and translated to glory, and the Holy Ghost is that same Spirit — Jesus living inside you.
- He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also, and greater works, because I go unto my Father; if ye love me, keep my commandments, and the Father will give you another Comforter to abide with you forever — I will not leave you comfortless, I will come to you.
- When they heard the crucifixion-and-resurrection message they were pricked in their heart and asked, men and brethren, what shall we do? Peter answered: repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

I want to read a few verses there if you would stay with me Mark 16 beginning with verse number nine we read now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week he appeared first to Mary Magdalene out of whom he had cast Seven Devils and notice she went and told them that had been with that had been with him as they mourned and wept now she became a witness when she was in the presence of Jesus and they when they heard that he was alive and had been seen of her believed not after that he appeared in another form unto two of them as they walked and went into the country and they went and towed it under unto the residue neither believed they them afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at me and upbraided them with their unbelief and Hardness of Heart because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen I want to speak to you a few moments on this subject this morning three days without Jesus three days without Jesus let's pray savior we love you we're grateful for the opportunity we have to Feast at your table and study your word I pray that our hearts would be open to receive all that you would have for us today pray that you would Minister mildly to every person in this house we thank you we praise you we love you in the name of Jesus we pray amen and amen three days without Jesus after the resurrection had taken place the most notable time in human existence and in history Jesus was crucified was in the grave for three days and then was resurrected and he began revealing himself first of all to his closest followers Mary Magdalene the Bible noted that the one who he had done a major amazing Deliverance for he had delivered her the Bible said from Seven Devils he began revealing himself to his closest Inner Circle and when he did this you would have expected there to be great Jubilation as the word started going around hey it's happened just like he said Jesus has been resurrected but instead we find a problem Jesus wasn't able to go witnessing he was an unstopping deaf ears opening blind eyes doing signs and wonders Miracles he wasn't bringing Deliverance he wasn't speaking words of Salvation instead the first thing Jesus had to do the first order of business was the deal with unbelief among the Believers think about that in just a minute remember Jesus had only been gone for three days but in three days the most Ardent followers of Christ suddenly could not be convinced that he had really been resurrected he told him it was going to happen he told him what was about to take place everything had happened just as he said it would but in three short days unbelief had entered in astonished Jesus that these loyal followers had become skeptical hard-hearted and doubters in such a short time but they did yes we rightly disdain Thomas for his doubt but he was not alone in his disbelief he had appeared to them and had to bring a personal witness to the resurrection before they would believe those who had experienced his power experienced his might his love and his Mercy were now in denial after three short days notice the difference Mary Magdalene when she met him the Bible said she went and told listen when you get in the presence of Jesus you got to tell somebody about it you can't keep it quiet you'll become a witness when you stay in the presence of Jesus but three short days had stopped the followers and the witnesses of Jesus and turned them into unbelievers and the Bible said that Jesus upbraided them because of their unbelief and Hardness of Heart that term to upgrade has several definitions one is to criticize severely and others to find fault with another is to reproach severely and the third or rather the fourth is to scold vehemently I submit to you before Jesus could do anything after the resurrection he had to scold his followers for not believing what had happened it has been said that absence makes the heart grow fonder I submit absence from Jesus makes the heart grow hard it cultivates doubt it cultivates unbelief it cultivates suspicion and cynicism unbelief happens when you don't have Jesus in your life there are several descriptions or happenings in the scripture that illustrate this point now I realize that God is everywhere and he's with us but we can reject him from our existence and from our lives and we can find ourselves just as the disciples drifting away and not staying in the presence of Jesus yes Jesus is everywhere but we aren't and sometimes we in mind and existence stop being with Jesus we start separating ourselves from the contact that we should have with him over in Mark the sixth chapter we read that he went out from fence and came into his own country Jesus went back home and brought his disciples with him and when the Sabbath day was come he began to teach in the synagogue and many hearing him were astonished saying from whence at this man these things and what wisdom is this which is given unto him that even such Mighty works are wrought in his hands and noticed they began to reduce Jesus from being God manifest in flesh and being the Healer they wanted to go back and remember him as The Carpenter's son they wanted to recall Jesus childhood they didn't want to recognize his deity they only wanted to recognize his Humanity it said is this they said is this not The Carpenter's son the son of Mary the brother of James Joseph's Judah and Simon and are not his sisters here with us and notice they were offended at him when you spend a little time away from Jesus you're easily offended folks who won't stay in the presence of Jesus folks who don't pray folks who don't read the word folks who don't go to church are easily offended people Jesus said unto them a prophet is not without honor but in his own country among his own kin and in his own own house and please notice verse number five it said and he could there do no Mighty works now Jesus can do everything but he was limited by their unbelief it said he could do no Mighty Works say that he laid his hands upon a few sick folks and healed him and he marveled because of their unbelief and he went around about the villages teaching there's a lot in this that we can find unbelief limits the scope of what Jesus can accomplish in your life yes he can do anything but he can't go over your unbelief and take care of situations he was limited now sometimes we think that healing's the greatest thing that Jesus can do he could heal folks on a bad day scripture Bears out that he could do no Mighty works and save he laid hands upon a few sick folk and heal them healing could take place on a bad day yes you see the greatest thing is salvation and salvation in your life to Mighty works in your life if you spend time away from Jesus and get unbelief in your life suddenly you start limiting the scope of what he can do for you and it said he went around the village teaching let me tell you being unteachable let me say this straight being unteachable is a symptom of unbelief have you ever been around to know it all don't anybody raise any hands or don't Point any fingers okay I know it all is unteachable they know everything that there is they they've got everything figured out they it doesn't matter what they're doing if it's on your job if it's uh in in life skills a know-it-all musician I know it all teacher I know it all Usher I know it all camera technician and I know it all preacher Heaven Help I can talk about preachers I am one Heaven Help preachers that can't take teaching I don't want to hear anybody else preach I don't want to hear anybody else teach cause I've heard it all and I Know It All listen some of the greatest things as a minister I can do is hear the word of God preached and taught by someone else could I stop preaching and meddle just a little more I get worried to go to a camp meeting when some preacher is so accomplished that the only time he's ever at the camp meeting is when he's preaching as Pastor Whitley and I share you may be seated settle down please I need to hear what the word of God gives to someone else because it may be for me Heaven Help me if I become a know-it-all and I become unteachable I can learn things from everybody when you're unteachable you're full of unbelief you think you know it all and you're wrong I'm gonna do it my way you may be on the highway before long he marveled at their unbelief just knowing Jesus did not eliminate unbelief they knew who he was but they didn't know who he was it limited his mighty works absence from Jesus presence brings unbelief and in turn it propagates easily offended people who once knew Jesus and when you're easily offended The Next Step is to develop a hard heart we can read in scripture several instances of hardened hearts it said in our text he scolded them or upgraded them because of their unbelief and their hard hearts in Matthew there's an example given Jesus was explaining something they were questioning Jesus concerning marriage and divorce and they were trying to play gotcha with Jesus now I pause when I speak to a Congregation of this size because I want to go from the top in a congregation this size there are folks who have gone through broken marriages and God has restored and healed and worked out things I come not to condemn today but I would remind us of a couple of things that the origins of divorce scripturally says in Matthew 19 8 said and he said to them Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives from the beginning it was not so he said because of the hardness of heart now let me pause there let me tell you most divorces that take place is because of Hardness of Heart in a relationship what's our original premise where did Hardness of Heart come from it came from disbelief and not being with Jesus when you don't keep Jesus in your marriage you're subjecting your marriage to unbelief and a Hardness of Heart hard-hearted people commit adultery bullets quiet in here I hope you're just listening but I'm still preaching hearted people people to the vows of their marriage where did their Hardness of Heart come from it came from unbelief because if they really believed in Jesus they wouldn't commit the sin of adultery preacher you're going to preach like this on Sunday morning you better know I am why because we need to hear it my marriage needs to hear it your marriage needs to hear it you better keep Jesus in your marriage hear me young unmarried in the house that you're looking to get married don't you think that you can go get married and you stop serving Jesus cause you got the rest of your life figured out you're gonna need Jesus more than ever in your marriage you're going to need a relationship with Christ between the two of you I may as well be a little bit more pastoral for a little while let me say this we are and rightfully so we quote the passage of scripture be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers for what Fellowship hath light with Darkness and many times we feel like that's a carte blanche that's a free reign just so I marry somebody else that's Apostolic everything's gonna be cool absolutely there's more to it than that that's just the starting place you need to find out some combat compatibility in your life somebody hear the preacher today you folks can come and repent of their sins get baptized in Jesus name and get filled with the Holy Ghost but if they don't keep spending time with Jesus well I I don't know about this tired of paying stuff girl don't hook yourself up to some guy that don't pay his tithes you're going to be keeping him up the rest of his life because he's going to be cursed with a curse sir don't marry some girl that don't believe in paying her tithe and going to church I don't care how many camp meetings she shout and hook about that [Applause] you better find someone that's going to keep your marriage with Jesus you got to stay in his presence just three days brought down among the disciples what will it be with when you hook up with somebody that don't pray that don't seek the face of God that don't put their life under the authority of Jesus [Music] preacher that's so Antiquated that's all right I'm old but it's still true hard-hearted people commit adultery hard-hearted people or belie or unbelievers and don't stick with the word let me tell you something else about Hardness of Heart Another example you remember it when Moses went to pharaoh and said let my people go if you'll recall scripture tells us why didn't Pharaoh let the people go it said because the hardness of his heart they're hard-hearted people that hang on to things that they ought to let go there's some stuff that you've been hanging on to too long that you need to let go there's some stuff you need to forgive and forget there's some habits and there's some ideas that you need to get rid of and let go it's keeping you from being in the presence of Jesus there's some stuff that a hard heart won't let you let go of forget it go on love the Lord Worship the Lord forget some things let it go let it go [Applause] hard hearts resist God's miraculous forgiveness and healing in the name of a legalistic ideology oh some of all that scared you to death when I use the word legalistic you know why because some of us have come become defensive by the attacks of ideologies that say oh you only do things because you're obeying the law there's nothing wrong with obeying the law you only dress a certain way because that's a legalistic idea oh no no no no the way I dress the way I live is the result of what's down inside me it's not what I do it's what I am there's things that I do unto Christ so don't let that word being legalistic scare you but let me identify what a real legalistic ideology is Mark 3 1 said and he entered into the synagogue and there was a man which had a withered hand and they watched him speaking of the spiritual so-called guides the Pharisees the pseudo-spiritual super pious self-righteous they watch Jesus they didn't watch a man coming in with the withered hand they kept their eye on Jesus whether he would heal him on the Sabbath day that they might accuse him they were more worried about obeying rules than healing taking place that's what what it's saying and he said unto the man which had the withered hand stand forth and he said unto them Jesus knew what they were thinking he said is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath day or to do evil to save life or to kill hmm but they held their peace they said I'm not going to get involved in this I'm going to lose I can see Jesus already knows what I've been thinking and when he had looked round about on them with anger Jesus now remember the Bible says be angry and sin not Jesus didn't sin but he did get angry when he looked round about on them with anger being grieved why for the hardness of their hearts they were more interested in following law than the grace and the healing and the mercy of Jesus taking place the psalmist said mercy and Truth have kissed or rather have joined together and said righteousness and peace of Kiss sound like a pretty intimate relationship now why would I quote that because scripture said this in Romans 2 1 therefore there are inexcusable o man whosoever thou art that judges but we're in thou Justice judges another thou condemn us thyself for thou that judges does the same thing the thing you're looking calm down preacher when you get your eyes off of Jesus and you start watching everybody else preacher are you making allowance for sin and I am not are you making allowance for compromise I am not I'm saying when we get our eyes on Jesus and we have a relationship with Jesus inside it's going to take care of a lot of stuff you don't have to look at everybody else and put fingers here and point fingers there and criticize he said when you start judging everybody else you're going to be judged with the same judgment but we are sure that the Judgment of God is according to truth I promise you God will stick by his truth but the psalmist said truth and mercy are met together you see too many of us want the law but we don't want Mercy you see Jesus expects us to follow his law but Jesus is the one who needs out the mercy because he has it joined together think as thou this o man that judges them which do such things and do us the same that thou shall escape the Judgment of God or despise thou The Riches of his goodness and forbearance and long-suffering some folks act like they absolutely get mad because God doesn't french fry people when they think he ought to be man I can't understand why God's letting so and so get by with such worry about it God's got it if he chooses to be long-suffering he's God he's got this if he chooses to bring Mercy he's God he's got this quit worrying about them take care of you verse 5 said but after thy hardness and in penitent heart Treasures up unto thyself wrath against the day of Wrath and Revelation the righteousness righteous Judgment of God who will render to every man according to his deed God's going to take care of it quit worrying about it that term impenitent means not feeling shame or regret about one's actions or attitude oh God don't let me have an impenitent heart let me have your spirit of Mercy but I want to ask you this if three days without Jesus brings unbelief and a hard heart what happens when you stay in his presence what happens when you come back into the presence of God acts 4 8 said then Peter filled with the Holy Ghost said unto them you rulers of the people Elders of Israel if we this day be examined for the good deed done to the impotent Man by what means he has made hope be it known unto you all and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth whom ye crucified whom God raised from the dead even by him that this man stand here before you hold what's he claiming he gave a good crucifixion message in two sentences but he reminded them they were asking and trying them once again about a healing take place he said it happened by the name of Jesus you see when you get in the presence of Jesus healings can take place the impotent man was made whole he was standing all there might be questions but healing had already taken place our choir sometimes sings a song that says there is a name that makes demons flee and then that song over and it says release the name some of us are needing to get back in the presence of Jesus himself and release the power of the name of Jesus in our lives we need to release it on that doubt we need to release it on that hard heart and say I need a cleansing I need a renewing I need a refreshing I need a holy ghost fulfilling in our Holy Ghost feeling they went on to say neither is their salvation in any other for there is none of the name under Heaven given among men whereby we must be saved and all those around that didn't know what was going on said man they're kind of bold aren't they you see when you get in the presence of Jesus there'll be boldness to testify now bold is is there's a difference in being bold in being brash there's a difference in being bold and being boorish and bullish bold folks just aren't ashamed both folks wait their turn and when it's time to testify they've already got it planned out in their mind what they're going to say it's not to condemn someone else but it's to magnify and exalt the name of Jesus notice they didn't try to take any credit for what was taken on it said this is done by the name of Jesus whatever accomplishments you have in life know where to give credit Jesus made this possible it's not me I'm not a know-it-all I know nothing now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John received that they were unlearned and ignorant men they marveled and they took knowledge of them that they had been with Jesus when you've been with Jesus there can be healings take place and there'll be boldness in your life salvation comes in the name of Jesus something else they sing in that song that said there's a name that makes demons flee I don't need to read it all but I can remind you of what happened in the country of the Gatherings when there was a man running around that they could they could not chain him they could not break him he couldn't be bound with chains it said he had had Devils for a long time he wore no clothes he Abode in no house but he dwelled among the tombs but when he saw Jesus you see when Jesus stepped sin the devil can't stand it there's no Spirit can take it when Jesus stepped in the spirits inside that man cried out and fell down and said with the loud voice what have we to do with you Jesus I'm here to tell you evil spirits tormenting Spirits have no place in the presence of Jesus if you'll stay in the presence of Jesus that kind of mess won't bother you let me tell you if you've got the power of the Holy Ghost in you you shouldn't be intimidated by any spirits any thoughts any concerns of Satan or evil you need to rebuke those things in Jesus name and stop letting your mind dwell on such too many folk they want to conjure up this that and the other and talk about even the devil has no power in this house we are blood boss filled with the name of Jesus Christ you need to take some authority over some things in the name of Jesus and rebuke it and put it behind you don't dwell on it you don't need a counseling session about it you don't need to talk about it get in the Altar and get full of the Holy Ghost and that stuff's gone the devil can't stand it man those demons inside the the man at Gathering they started begging they started whining please please please Jesus rebuked them he made them talk said what's your name they said our names Legions for we are many and they start begging Jesus let me out of here where can I go can I go to the pigs please scripture said resist the devil and he'll do what he'll flee from you how do you resist and you say in Jesus name you stay in the presence of Jesus remember in Matthew once again Jesus followers they've got things skewed there's a man whose son was referred to as a lunatic and he was asking for him to be cured and they came to Jesus said we couldn't carry him Jesus called them a faithless and perverse generation Jesus just walked up cast him out they said why couldn't we do it he said this comes by what fasting and prayer I fear we don't speak that apparently enough because there's too many folks that are fasting from prayer you don't need to fast from prayer you need to have fasting and prayer if you want to rebuke the enemy you need to have a prayer life that you talk to him every day you need to know how to talk to Jesus sometimes we get this thing in our mind oh that I've got to come to the Altar and that's the only time I can pray you need to have prayer in your life that sometimes I need to go down the highway and turn the mess off the radio and just have a little talk with Jesus keep your eyes open you can pray with your eyes open but you need to drive down the road a little while and say Jesus I just won't talk to you today I want to thank you for what's been going on some of you long-haul drivers you got more time to pray than anybody take advantage of it oh man I'm having to drive an hour to work what Glory there's a time that you can talk to Jesus for a little while just you and him right there some of y'all looking at me like I'm nuts I'm not crazy but I do hear voices I hear the voice of the Holy Ghost speak to me from time to time saying I want to commune with you I'm not asking for anything Lord I just want to talk to you a while hallelujah hallelujah stand with me musicians head this way you see he said this can't happen demons won't flee except by prayer and fasting that's stain in the presence of Jesus preacher how do you just how can we possibly stay in his presence you need the comforter inside you Jesus said in John 14 26 but the comforter which is the Holy Ghost whom the father will send in my name now don't let don't let don't Breeze past that pump the brakes what'd he say the comforter which is the Holy Ghost whom the father will send in my name who's talking Jesus is talking some of y'all said yeah I know he is that's in red letters in my Bible he said the comter which is the Holy Ghost whom the father will send in my name he shall teach you all things see you get teachable and bring all things to your remembers whatsoever I had said anything peace I leave with you my peace I've given to you not as the world giveth give I unto you let not your heart be troubled neither Let It Be Afraid see when you got the comforter which is the Holy Ghost well now over Saint John the 16th chapter saying Jesus talking he said nevertheless I tell you the truth it's a CD expedient rather for you that I go away oh no I thought I wanted to live in the presence of Jesus now he's saying he's got to go away he said for you if I go not away the comforter will not come unto you but if I depart I will send him unto you now he's not contradicting himself I know this is Elementary to some but it's not to all some need to hear what this preacher's saying today the Holy Ghost is Jesus living inside you he said I'll I'm going to go away a dispensation has ceased the fleshly presence of Jesus God manifest in flesh has been crucified has been resurrected and now has been translated to Glory but in a new form the Holy Ghost it's that same spirit it's the comforter it's Jesus he said I'm going to send him to you back in chapter 14 it said verily I say unto you he that believeth on me in the works that I do shall he do also in Greater Works than these shall he do because I go unto my father and whether so ever he shall ask in my name what name the name of Jesus that will I do that the father may be glorified and son and he shall ask anything in my name I will do it if you love me keep my Commandments and I will pray the father and he will give you another comforter that he may abide with you forever even the spirit of Truth whom the world cannot receive because it saith him not neither knoweth him but ye know him for he dwelleth with you I'm not here and shall be in you I will not leave you comfortless I will come to you what's Jesus saying if you don't want to be out of his presence get him living inside you get the Holy Ghost living inside you then he's going to be with you all the time if you thought I was going to go this far and not go to Acts you don't know me because you say Peter preached a crucifixion and resurrection message and the scripture said when they heard this message Acts 2 37 said they were pricked in their hearts let me tell you if you've been dealing with a heartened heart you need to get back to the crucifixion message if you've been having doubts about some stuff if you've been letting unbelief enter in you need to get back to the crucifixion and resurrection message I think too many times we call it the crucifixion message and that's just the beginning it's the
