Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

The lifter up of mine head

  • David composed the psalm fleeing his own son's insurrection: many are increased that trouble him, and many say there is no help for him in God.
  • The background is read from 2 Samuel: Abselum prepared chariots and horses, stole the hearts of the men of Israel at the gate, sent spies through the tribes, and David fled Jerusalem rather than shed blood.
  • David's answer stands in three things: God is his shield, God is his glory, and God is the lifter of his head, so he laid down and slept and awoke sustained, unafraid of ten thousands set against him.

Scriptures: Psalm 3:1-8; 2 Samuel 15:1-6; 2 Samuel 15:10-14

Stay in the house of God and make the sacrifice of joy

  • Psalm 27 is read as the remedy: dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of your life, be hid in his pavilion in the time of trouble, and have your head lifted up above your enemies with sacrifices of joy.
  • The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but Jesus came that we might have life more abundantly; joy is commanded, not waited for — make a joyful noise, serve the Lord with gladness, and enter his gates with thanksgiving.
  • Proverbs warns that singing songs to a heavy heart is like taking away a garment in cold weather and vinegar upon nitre; the sermon urges checking the songs that shape the spirit.

Scriptures: Psalm 27:4-6; John 10:10; Psalm 81:1-2; Psalm 100:1-5; Proverbs 25:20

The joy of the Lord is your strength

  • In Nehemiah 8 the law is read distinctly and the sense given from morning to midday; the people are sent to eat the fat and drink the sweet, for the joy of the Lord is their strength.
  • The psalmist lifts his eyes to the hills, from whence his help comes; and Jesus in Luke 21 commands, when the signs and distress come, look up and lift up your heads, for your redemption draweth nigh.
  • The preacher tells of his own college days with Sister Jamie at the University of Tennessee, when Bishop baptized Reggie White in Jesus' name and whispered his coach's charge to him at the altar — get your hands up and get your head up — and Reggie received the Holy Ghost.

Scriptures: Nehemiah 8:1-10; Psalm 121:1-3; Luke 21:25-28

Well, Lord bless you. You may return to your seats. Greetings and welcome to First Apostolic Church. It is so wonderful to see every one of you in the house of the Lord on this another Lord's day. This is the day the Lord has made. And he did a good job in East Tennessee is all I can say. I will rejoice and be glad in it. It is so good to have you in the house of the Lord. We join with the voices that have gone before us saying welcome to all of our guests. Honored to have you folks worshiping with us today. Thank you for your ministry. I would say again, welcome uh uh to brother and sister Karns. Always good to have you back in Knoxville. Love you folks dearly. If there's anyone this is your first time at First Apostolic Church, we want you to feel right at home to worship with us. Thank you for joining with us. I also welcome all of those who are joining us on the multimedia platforms that God has given us the privilege of reaching our community, our region, our nation, and yes, around the world. Thank you for joining with us, and I hope that you can be in service with us very soon. I give honor to all of our pastoral team and leadership, to all the leaders of the church, to the saints, and most of all, I reserve the highest honor for the one who deserves it. Thank you Lord Jesus for being in this service today. Aren't you glad to feel his presence here? Hallelujah. Aren't you glad to feel the presence of the Lord here? Yes, our God is omniresent. He's everywhere. But he does not necessarily manifest himself everywhere. But scripture lets us know that he inhabited the praises of Israel which was his people. We are now his people and he inhabits our praise. So he shows up and shows out if we'll praise. So I'm thankful to feel his presence here today. I want to take you to the word of the Lord this morning. I do not plan on this being a lengthy message and I know all of you are happy about that and you pray that I'll be truthful and follow what I would say. But uh I uh have a message that I'd like to got get right to the point with if that's all right. Calling your attention to the book of Psalms the third chapter. The book of Psalms the third chapter. We're going to read for now beginning with the first four verses. I'll give you folks upstairs that little heads up, but we'll be going back there in a narrative a little later on. But the heading in many of your Bibles will say a psalm of David when he fled from Abselum his son. Lord, how are they increased that trouble me? Many are they that rise up against me? Many there be which say of my soul, there's no help for him in God. Say Lot. But thou, oh Lord, are a shield for me, my glory, and the lifter up of mine head. I cried unto the Lord with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Sah, I would take you back to verse three. It said, "Thou, oh Lord, are the lifter of mine head." For a few moments, I'd speak to you on this subject. Get your head up. Get your head up. Let's pray. Savior, I love you. I'm so grateful to be in your house. I thank you for every individual that's in this place, Lord, for the wonderful opportunity and the awesome responsibility that you've granted me to preach your word this day. Now, Lord, I pray that your anointing would once again be manifest on my flesh. For I can say nothing and do nothing unless you do anoint. Lord, I thank you for your word that is ever settled and is anointed. Let us receive encouragement, strength, and power from all that you have for us this day. For this, we're grateful and thankful in the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen. Get your head up. It can be dangerous. No, I'll be more definitive. It is dangerous to walk around with your head down. Uh any of you who have uh done much uh internet surfing, I'm sure have seen some of the clips of folks who it has now become popular to be on their cell phone devices and feeling that they can multitask and get around while they are distracted in their walking. Forget distracted driving. We have distracted walking now. And we've seen videos of folks running into light poles, walking out in front of traffic and walking into decorative reflection ponds because they had their head down when they should have been watching where they were going. They should have had their head up. Simply stated, it's a good idea to watch where you're going. In addition to that, the posture of having one's head down many times indicates a posture of frustration, failure, being subdued or even defeated. In the passage of scripture that I read in your hearing, it tells of a subdued and at this point betrayed and feeling quite helpless in his flesh, David, who his own son has betrayed him. I would take you back to give you a little bit of the background scriptures that facilitated David composing this psalm. In 2 Samuel the 15th chapter, we read that there was conflict in the kingdom. But it was also not just in the kingdom. It was within David's own family. Abselum had plotted a plan in defense of his sister and had murdered his stepbrother or halfbrother and uh had caused great distress in the kingdom. And Abselum now because he had been banished from the kingdom was becoming a distraction who was looking for malcontents who would agree with him. In 2 Samuel 15:1 and we read, "And it came to pass after this that Abselum prepared him chariots and horses and 50 men to run before him. And Abselum rose up early and stood beside the way of the gate. And it was so that when any man that had a controversy came to the king of the for judgment, then Abselam called unto him and said, "Of what city art thou?" And he said, "Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel." And Abselum said unto him, "See, thy matters are good and right, but there's no man disputed of the king to hear thee." Abselum said, "Moreover, oh, that I were made judge in the land, that every man which hath any suit or cause might come unto me, and I would do him justice." And it was so that when any man came nigh to him to do him obiscence, he put forth his hand and took him and he kissed him. And on this manner did Abselum to all Israel that came to the king for judgment. So Abselum stole the hearts of the men of Israel. Understand the malcontent uncon understand the subversive way that Abselum was stealing the people. This is a good thing to understand how those who have been rejected of authority sometimes find themselves looking for a way to divide the kingdom. He first elevated himself with much pump. He drew attention to himself. It ca, it said he came to pass he prepared for him chariots and horses. He said, "Everybody look at me. I'm Abselum." You know Abselum. Y'all remember Abselum in his hair. He said, "Everybody look at me. I'm I'm coming into town. And it said he got up early. You know, there's some folks can't get up early enough to get to church on time, but if there's some kind of disruption, they'll get up before everybody else is there and be in the parking lot waiting. And he then developed a personality of false humility. Oh, I I hear you have a problem. Oh, will not anybody hear your problem? Oh, I you you were going to go to the king and get proper judgment and the king didn't agree with you or the king wouldn't hear your little trivial thing. Boy, if I were king, if I were judge, the second guessesser, the stage is being set. Abselum is about to rise up and divide the kingdom. He finds himself in the presence of anyone who will hear who's had a dispute. He said, "I would see that your matter was handled properly." And oh, I agree with you. It didn't matter what it was. When he got him alone, he said, "Now, you're right. You've got this. I don't care what the king." It didn't matter if they were a dirty dog. He was going to agree with them in private and and and secondguess any decisions that had been made. And the Bible says that Abselum stole the hearts of the men of Israel. On down in verse 10, it said, "But Abselum sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, as soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then ye shall say, Abselum reignth in Hebron." He said, "It's time to go public with this insurrection." And with Abselum went 200 men out of Jerusalem that were called, and they went in in their simplicity, and they knew not as they knew not anything. And Abselum sent a Hyhel, the Gileonite, David's counselor, from his city, even to Gill Gillow, while he offered sacrifices. And the conspiracy was strong, for the people increased continually with Abselum. And there came a messenger to David, saying, "The hearts of the men of Israel are after Abselum." And David said unto his pe his ser, all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, "Arise, let us flee, for we shall not else escape from Abselum." make speed to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly and bring evil upon us and smite the city with the edge of the sword. This is the setting which made David compose Psalms three. I guess the most difficult problem that there is is when there's problems within a family. Law enforcement will tell you the one thing that they hate more than any other to respond to is a conflict in a family, a domestic dispute within a family. Because sometimes it's the most difficult thing to settle. Hear me today. Let me speak to families today. Life is too short for us to have family disagreements that are separating us that we do not talk and we do not communicate. I'm speaking to somebody in the house today. Life is too short for us to allow family disputes to fester and to cause divisions that keep us from serving God together and enjoying all the wonderful things that we can enjoy with multiple generations of happiness. Instead, we find a situation that father and son are at odds to the point David is having to flee for his life. An insurrection is taking place. A coup is happening. And the people who were not aware of what was going on are falling into the trap of Abselum's plan. But notice rather than having a bloodbath for David did have many supporters. But David knew at this time it was not the right time for if you read more of this passage, you'll see that David's servants, though they might have been fewer at the time, they were loyal and they were ready to go to war with Abselum right then. But David, even in the midst of this conflict, had care for his own son that turned against him. But he did what we ought to do. He turned to the Lord and he began composing this psalm. He said, "Lord, how are they increased that trouble me? Many are they that rise up against me. Many there be which say of my soul, though there is no help for him in God. David's making a plea before God. But notice as the psalm continues, "But thou, oh L, O Lord, are a shield for me, my glory, and the lifter of my head." He encourages himself, and he gets in touch with God to the point to know three things. Number one, you're my shield. God will protect you in the most dire circumstances if you'll put it in his hands. God is your protector. Never mistake. If you'll serve God, there's a protection for you no matter the situation. >> And then he said, he's my glory. David appeared to be losing honor. But you see, his honor wasn't that of men. His honor came from knowing and loving God. But then I'll get where I'm going. He said, "He's the lifter of my head." How could David make such a statement? Yes, I guess if my son had turned against me, my posture might be to drop my head in shame and in agon agony, not even looking the path that I'm traveling. But David said, "No, he's the lifter of my head. The God I serve knows how to give encouragement." I don't know what you may be going through in your own family today. I don't know what struggle you may be taking on in your life, but I came to tell you, God wants you to lift your head up spiritually, square your shoulders, and understand all is not lost. Your protection is here. You may be down. Get your head up today. Raise your spiritual head up and say, "God, I'm going to trust in you. I will not lose. I will not be defeated." Now, I know that sounds so simple, but many of us spiritually find ourselves walking around with our spiritual heads hung. We're going through a trial. We're going through a test. We're going through a struggle. and we're trying to deal with it on our own when all the time we're needing to turn back to the Lord and understand he's going to protect me. He's going to give me my honor and he's going to lift my head. He's going to give me encouragement. >> David apparently got an answer pretty quick. Now, I can go ahead and tell you the rest of the story. Abselum's coup would not be everlasting. Abselum in God's time would be defeated. And even as Abselum met his demise, it would be a David that would be pleading for mercy for Abselum's life. But I want you to notice what happened to David right then. When David pinned this prayer and this psalm, he realized that there was some encouragement there. Here was the encouragement that he got. He said, "I laid me down and slept." Now, I know some of you maybe came for a greater theological dissertation today. Well, some of those better speakers than I will be in your future. But this is just where many of us live. You're having trouble sleeping over the problems you've been dealing with. There's some stuff you need to take back to Jesus so you can get a good night's sleep. He said, after I I got in touch with the Lord and I got things straightened out, he said, "You know what? I think I'll go take a nap. I He said, I I laid me down and slept. I awakened for the Lord sustained me. I got a good night's rest. You see, when God starts telling you, lift up your head. When you start getting encouragement, the problem may not be over yet, but if you'll put it in, somebody hear me today. You've been trying to deal with something on your own. Get your head up spiritually and know the lifter of your head. He's going to take care of your anxieties and your troubles and your family situation. He said, "I will not be afraid of 10,000 people." I mean, three verses or four verses earlier, everybody was out to get David. But when he got in touch with the Lord, he said, "I'm not going to be afraid of 10,000 people that have set themselves against me roundabout. Arise, oh Lord, and save me, oh my God, for thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheekbone. Pow! Right in the kisser. Thou has broken the teeth of the ungodly. Salvation belongth unto the Lord. Thy blessing is upon thy people, say law. When you lift up your head, you will have rest. David took a nap. You may be hiding, David, but I've got news for you. It's time to get your head up. Victory is coming. You may feel like you've been under siege. You may feel like your life has had a coup come against it. Get your spiritual head up and know your deliverance is in the Lord today. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. You see, David had a habit of being reminded about that physical posture and how it related spiritually. In Psalms 27 verse4 we read, "One thing have I desired of the Lord that will I seek after that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life to behold the beauty of the Lord to inquire in his temple." You want to get your head up, stay in the house of God. reason some folks lose their posture. They won't stay in the He said, "I want to stay in the house of God. I want to move in." Some of us need to move in instead of visting every once in a while. >> We need to move in and start dwelling in his temple. >> And that's where we get our questions answered. He said to inquire in his temple. For in the time of trouble, he shall hide me in his pavilion. If you'll stay in the church, if you'll stay in the house of God, when trouble comes, trouble can't find you. Where's Mool? I can't find him. Why? He's hid in the pavilion. Where's all that trouble and stress? I can't find him to give it to him. Why? He's in the house of God. Verse six said, "And now shall my head be lifted upon all mine enemies. Round about me, therefore, will I offer in his tabernacle, look out, I will offer in his tabernacle the sacrifices of joy. I will sing. Yay. I will sing praise unto the Lord. David said, I'm going to go to church and move in. Then I'm going to hide myself from trouble. I'm going to lift up my head and I'm going to make the sacrifice of joy. Is it a sacrifice to have joy, buddy? It is for some folks. I'm telling you, the reason some folks can't lift up their head, they haven't given a sacrifice of joy in a long time. Hey sour puss, there's your theological term, why don't you wipe that frown off of your face? Why don't you get that negative attitude out of your mind and out of your heart? Get your head up and make a sacrifice to smile and lift your hands and your worship and your praise and get a little your joy back on. Quit walking around looking for a gray cloud every day. Stop looking for negative things. Start finding something excited about I'm getting to go to church. Not I got to go to church. >> I said I get to go to church. I I get to to be in revival. Oh, there's service Sunday morning, s Sunday night here. Whoop! Glory. PIA is going to be here this afternoon. I can get in three if I need to. >> You see, he said the sacrifice of joy. John 10:10 said, "The thief cometh not but to steal and to kill and destroy, but I've come that you might have life and have that you might have it more abundantly." Competition choir this year. That's the song that they sang. They said, "I've come that you might have life more abundantly." Man, before they got through, they'd say, "Joy, joy, joy. Joy, joy, joy, joy, joy, joy, joy, joy, joy, joy, joy, joy, joy, joy, joy, joy, joy, joy, joy, joy, joy, joy. >> You know what they were saying? We ought to have joy. What's the deep theological statement there? We ought to have joy. We need to quit walking around in the mlly grubs waiting for something bad to happen. Get your joy on this morning. If you'll give If somebody would give a sacrifice of joy today, God wants to do something for you in this house. >> See, some of us are waiting for him to do something, and he's waiting for us to do something. >> That's right. >> Oh, if God will do something for me, I'll get happy. How about you get happy knowing he's going to do something for you? Hallelujah. Psalms 81 says, "Sing aloud unto God our strength. Make a joyful noise unto the God of Jacob. Take a psalm. Bring hither the timberal, the pleasant harp with the sultry, the hundth psalm. That second division of 50, 100, 150 says, "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all you lands." It doesn't say let a joyful noise happen. It says make a joyful noise. That means it takes a concerted effort on your part to do it. You see, why do praise teams practice? Why do singers prepare? Why do technicians work with sound? Why are these video folks here? Why are folks clapping and worshiping? We're trying to make an atmosphere of joy. Make a joyful noise unto the Lord. The world's had enough sad singing and fast digging. That's called a funeral. The world's needing joy today. >> Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before his presence with singing. Know ye that the Lord, he is God. Do you know that the Lord is God? Then act like it. Know he's still in charge. Get your joy back. Know ye the Lord. He is God. It's he that made us, not we ourselves. We're his people and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, into his courts with praise. Be thankful unto him and bless his name, for the Lord is good. and his mercy is everlasting and his truth endureth to all generations. You see, the reason some folks can't get their head up, they hadn't been listening to the right songs. You know, some of us might have to go check the presets on our radio. Oh Lord, I quit preaching, started meddling. Proverbs 25:20 says this, "As he that taketh away a garment in cold weather, and as vinegar of oner, so is he that sings songs to a heavy heart." Let me give you interpretation here. If it's cold outside and you take somebody's coat off, you know what they going to do? They gonna chill. And that ain't in a good way. I know language changes sometimes. I say chill. That ain't the kind of chill we're talking about. That means you're cold. You're uncomfortable. And the comparison the proverb makes, he said, as he that taketh away a garment in the cold and as vinegar upon the nighter. Now, if you look this up, you'll find out that what is referred to here is what chemists call potassium nitrate. And if you pour vinegar on potassium nitrate, there's a chemical reaction of bubbling and it gives off effervescence. Now, anybody in the house ever smelled vinegar? Not the kind of stuff you want to dab behind your ears before you go on a date. You know, in other words, if you pour vinegar on potassium nitrate, it's going to give off a foul odor. Now, that's the comparison that's been made. A chill and a stink is what he's saying. He said that's what somebody that singeth songs to a heavy heart. You know, there's stuff that's being played out there nowadays just don't give you a lot of encouragement. Don't make you want to lift your head up. I mean, it's who shot John. She loved him and he loved him and he she loved her and and they all ran together and none of them got along. They lost their pickup truck. Uh, let me tell you, I need to get in the house of the Lord and hear some songs about joy, joy, joy, joy, joy. I need to sing songs of praise. I need to be Am I the only person in the house needs a little joy today? I need to get happy. I don't care whether your team made a field goal yesterday or not. You ought to get a little joy in your heart today. The joy of the Lord is what? My strength. Some of us need to get our strength back. Get your head up. Get your joy back today. >> Hallelujah. Let me hurry. I told you it'd be short. I don't want to lie. You see, when you lift your head up, you'll have joy. When you come into the house of God, you ought to come into the the place joyfully, expecting joy, passing joy on, be excited, be I didn't come to be entertained. I came to entertain the presence of God. >> That's why I need to give the sacrifice of joy. I don't feel good today. Quit feeling in the wrong place. >> Come in feeling joyful. Find a way to find some excitement. Oh, but I I'm not entertained. I won't entertain his presence. Oh, I you know, some of us could have a whole lot better Mondays >> if we do more joy on Sunday. How long has it been? Ask yourself the question, since you've just lost yourself in the joy of worship, you didn't care what anybody else thought. You didn't care about Monday or Friday. All you care about is God. I'm going to enjoy myself to death if I have to. And I'm going to enjoy your presence. I'm going to give you praise. Not because what you done, but because I know who you are and what you will do. I'm just going to give you joy today. I'm going to enjoy your presence today. Listen, if you'll try it, it works. Something starts happening down in here. There's some cares that go away. There's some problems that seem so big that start fading. >> Preacher, are you preaching emotionalism? You better know I am. We are creatures of emotion. God made us that way. And we need to, some of us, we we want to talk about our mental health. And I'm not disdaining any kind of treatment or anything like that, but some of us need to start treating ourselves to a little more joy and getting our heads up and getting excited about the things that God has done for us. Give some more thanksgiving. Look around you. What he's done for you with all of our troubles and trials. We're living in the greatest nation in the world. I personally think I'm in the greatest church in the world. I've got the greatest wife. I got the greatest family. I got the greatest church family. >> See, when you lift up your head, joy brings strength. Over in Nehemiah the 8th chapter, we find that the temple has been rebuilt and it has come to completion. And now Nehemiah and the leadership are bringing the people back together in a dedicatorial or rededication sense to the rebuilt temple. Nehemiah 8:1 says, "And the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the Watergate, and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of law of Moses which the Lord had commanded to Israel." Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation, both the men and the women, and all that could hear with understanding upon the first day of the seventh month. And he read therein before the street that was before the Watergate from the morning until midday. You think I preach a long time before the men and the women and those that could understand in the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of law. You'll have joy if you'll listen to the word preached and taught. And Ezra the scribe stood up on a pullpit of wood which they had made for the purpose. A lot of message there, but we'll go another time. There's a purpose for the platform in the pull pit that we should hear things. And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people for he was above all the people. And when he opened it, the people stood up. And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God. And all the people answered, "Amen. Amen." And lifted up their hands, and they bowed their heads and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground. Now, I understand there's prayer times that in reverence, we say, "Let's bow our heads." That's meant as a moment of reverence and respect, but you got to know when's the right time to bow your head. When's the right time to get your head up? Verse eight said, "So they read in the book of in the law of God distinctly and gave the sense." They didn't just read it. They gave proper interpretation to it. You better be careful who you have even reading the word to you and giving interpretation. There was a distinct voice, the word of God. You need to know those who labor among you. You need to know who's doing the preaching to know what they stand for. God gave them the word distinctly and they gave sense and caused them to understand the reading. And Nehemiah, which is Turtha, and Ezra the priest, the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, "This day is holy unto the Lord your God. Mourn not nor weep. For all the people wept when they heard the word. Then he said unto them, "Go your way. Eat the fat, drink the sweet, send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared. For this day is holy unto the Lord, neither be ye sorry, for the joy of the Lord is your strength." You know what he was saying? Get your heads up today. This is not a day of mourning and crying. We're celebrating a deliverance that God has given us. We got to get our hands up. We don't >> Yes, we will have seasons of reverence in the house of God, but some folks, you can't distinguish reverence from deadness. used to tell the story that the MTs got a call that someone had died in church service. They went in, hauled eight people out before they found the real dead one. The church ought to be alive. There ought to be joy in the house. We ought to rejoice. We We ought to be a rejoicing people. We ought to be looking for an opportunity to get our hands up and get excited. Oh, glory. Stand with me. Musicians, get ready. You see, I don't need any more sad songs. I don't need anything to take me down. This is a day of victory. The joy of the Lord is our strength. God has victories for us all. The psalmist said in Psalms 121, it's from the beginning to the end. I will lift up mine eyes in the hill. You can't lift your eyes up unless you got your heads up. I will lift up mine eyes into the hills from which cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved. He that keepeth thee will not slumber. Could I say this without appearing in any way making a specific social statement? Sadly, in the past several days, our nation and the world has witnessed some horrific events that makes every civil individual want to drop your heads in remorse, disbelief, and anger. But you know what Jesus spoke of these times? In Luke 21, Jesus speaking to his disciples, he said in verse 25, "There shall be signs in the in the sun and in the moon and in the stars and upon the earth distress of nations with perplexity. the sea and the waves roaring. Men's hearts failing them for fear and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth. For the powers of heaven shall be shaken. You see, as long as we're looking to the earth, we're not looking in the right direction. As long as we're looking down at the way man solves problems, we're not going to find our answer. Verse 27, he went on to say, "And then shall they see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and glory, and when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, lift up your heads, your redemption drawth nigh." Jesus is coming back for his people. Don't let all the disruptions and all the horrible events take you down and get you looking down at the earth. Look up. Your redemption, your redeemer is headed this way. Get your eyes off the earth and get your eyes toward heaven. Let me tell you one quick story. Several years ago when I was attending the University of Tennessee, Sister Jamie and I while we were working on our degrees at the University of Tennessee, we were privileged and some of you folks that's been here a while know this, but I realize we have many that maybe have not heard this. We were blessed to get connected to the University of Tennessee's Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter. And during that particular season, there were some athletes that were attending the University of Tennessee who went on to later great fame, but even then were college all-Americans. The wide receiver and world class sprinter Willie G. quarterback named Lee Jenkins and my dear friend Reggie White, defensive lineman. While he was there at University of Tennessee, his playing height and weight, he was 6'5, 285. [Music] And we started having service and frankly the apostolic just basically took over the fellowship Christian athletes. Folks started getting baptized in Jesus' name. We'd meet on Tuesday night. Then we we bought one van and we bought two vans and we started bringing athletes to the service and they started bringing their friends and we had a Holy Ghost outpour on the University of Tennessee campus. Reggie White was known as the Minister of Defense later on when he would achieve Hall of Fame status with the Eagles and the Packers and But when he was here on campus, we baptized him in Jesus name. Bishop Mcool baptized him in Jesus' name. The night that Bishop Mcool baptized Reggie in Jesus' name, Reggie was 6'5, 285. Bishop was 57 and 3/4 and 135. And so the posture was something like this when he was baptizing Reggie. And it was fun to see when he baptized him in Jesus' name. When Reggie went down in the water, the girth of that great big body brought the water level up and Bishop had water up to here. [Music] I later asked Bishop wanting to learn technique. I said, "Dad, how do you get a man that big back up out of the water?" He said, "You get him down. He'll get up." And he did. But I'm still going somewhere. Stay with me. For Reggie had not yet received the baptism of the Holy Ghost. One Sunday morning, the Holy Ghost began moving because there was joy in the house. There was excitement in the house. And Reggie White wanted the Holy Ghost. Evidence was speaking with tongues. Altar call was big was given. And that big hulk of a man came down to the altar and started seeking the Holy Ghost. And the power of God was moving everything. But Bishop was up on the platform. And Bishop noticed Reggie's posture. Reggie was while 6 five 285 he was praying just like this. Bishop remembered hearing his head coach Johnny Majors tell all of his linemen when they were rushing the quarterbacks, "If you can't get to them," he would say, "Get your hands up." And I saw Bishop go over and start whispering in Reggie's ear for he was still a bit inhibited in his seeking for the Holy Ghost. And as Bishop whispered to him, all of a sudden I saw Reggie White's head come up and his hands go up. Bishop had whispered in his ear said, "Reggie, your coach tells you when you're rushing the quarterback to get your hands and get your head up." He said, "If you want the Holy Ghost," he said, "you need to get your hands up and get your head up." I want you to know Reggie White did this. He did this. And in about 5 seconds, the Holy Ghost hit him. He started speaking with other tongues just as fluently as could be. And then stiff as a board, he started falling backward. And ain't nobody gonna catch a man that big when he falls. He laid right out in the floor speaking with other tongues as the spirit gave utterance. What are you saying? If you'll get your head up, >> if you'll get your hands up, if you're in this house today with a need, if you need the Holy Ghost, if you'll come, you can have it. If you have a problem, a situation that you've been dealing with, would you come today? This is not surrender in the negative sense. This is a victory pose. That's your victory post. Get your hands up. Get your head up. Come seeking God. He wants to do something for you today. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Yeah. >> I got joy on the inside. It feels like I can't keep it. >> Bring your joy. Bring your joy. I keep praising in the midnight. The joy of the Lord is my strength. >> Say, I got joy on the inside. It feels like I can't keep it in. >> I keep praising the joy. Get your joy. No matter what you're going through, get your joy. Heal your family. >> Heal your family. >> I keep praising your relationship. The joy of the Lord is my strength. Said I got joy on the inside. It feels like I keep praising in the midnight. The joy of the Lord is my >> joy of the Lord. Yes. The joy of the Lord is my strength. >> The joy of the Lord is my strength. Come on now. >> I got a river. I've got a river that's flowing inside. It's flowing. It's ever growing. I got a fire and it's always rain. It won't go away. It's always burning. You've given me joy. >> It's unspeakable joy. Undeniable, unexplainable. I've got the joy of the Lord down in my heart, [Music] deep down in my soul. Uncontainable. It's untable. I've got the joy of joy on the inside. >> It feels like it. Hallelujah. >> I keep praising in the midnight joy. The Lord is my [Music] joy on the inside. Feels like I keep it in. >> I keep praising in the midnight. The joy of the Lord is the joy of the Lord is joy of the Lord. >> The joy of the Lord is the Lord. The joy of the Lord is my joy of the Lord. >> The joy of the Lord is my hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. [Music] Hallelujah. Could [Music] you go from this place today making a concerted effort to have special joy and go out excited if you go out to eat today? Be so happy that the waitress wonders what you up to. She may be watching the door thinking you're going to leave without paying. Leave her a better tip. Are you being crazy? Yeah, I am. The joy of the Lord is my strength. I want to go out of this place strong, not weak, not with my head down. And then come back in tonight with more joy. Come expecting God to do a mighty work in your life. Would you greet your brothers and sisters? You're dismissed in Jesus' name. Shake hands and be friendly.
