Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

Who's Your Daddy?

  • Jesus said, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life; and though he bore record of himself, his record was true, for he knew whence he came and whither he went.
  • Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God; beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be, but we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.
  • To those who claimed Abraham, and then God, as their father, Jesus answered: if ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed, and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
  • Ye are of your father the devil, he told them: he was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him; he is a liar, and the father of it — a man's characteristics identify his father.

Scriptures: John 8:12-20; 1 John 3:1-3; John 8:31-47

Rule Over Your Own Spirit

  • He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down and without walls; Matthew Henry said such a man keeps neither his thoughts, his desires nor his resentments in good order.
  • Make no friendship with an angry man, and with a furious man thou shalt not go, lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul; an angry man stirreth up strife, and a furious man aboundeth in transgression.
  • He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.
  • Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath, neither give place to the devil.
  • Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall; better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.

Scriptures: Proverbs 25:28; Proverbs 22:24-25; Proverbs 29:22; Proverbs 16:32; Ephesians 4:26-27; Proverbs 16:18-19

nabal the Churl

  • nabal was very great, with 3,000 sheep and a thousand goats, of the house of Caleb; his wife Abigail was a woman of good understanding and of a beautiful countenance, but the man was churlish and evil in his doings.
  • David's men had been a wall unto nabal's shepherds both by night and by day, and nothing was missed of all that pertained unto him; David asked only that his young men find favour in his eyes in a good day.
  • nabal railed on them: who is David, and who is the son of Jesse? Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I have killed for my shearers, and give it unto men whom I know not whence they be?
  • Abigail made haste with the provisions and fell on her face before David: upon me, my lord, upon me let this iniquity be; the Lord will certainly make my lord a sure house, and the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with the Lord thy God.
  • David blessed her advice for keeping him this day from shedding blood; and when she told her husband in the morning, his heart died within him and he became as a stone, and about ten days after the Lord smote him, and Abigail became David's wife.

Scriptures: 1 Samuel 25:1-3; 1 Samuel 25:4-21; 1 Samuel 25:23-32; 1 Samuel 25:35-39; 1 Samuel 25:42

Called the Sons of God

  • Paul greets the saints at Ephesus: grace and peace from God our Father, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ, and chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.
  • We who were born in sin and shapen in iniquity have received the spirit of adoption: when you repent of your sins, take his name on in the water, and receive his spirit in you, he becomes your Father.
  • Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin, for his seed remaineth in him; in this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil.

day but uh I'll let the ladies listen to what I have to say as well I'd call your attention to the Book of John the eth chapter The Book of John the eth chapter we're going to begin reading at verse number 12 I'll give you just a moment to find that book of John the 8th chapter verse number 12 and I do also once again uh honor my father and mother uh for 68 years of marriage what a great example they are and have been to me and I love y'all dearly thank you so much uh The Book of John the 8th chapter going to verse number 12 then spake Jesus again unto them saying I am the light of the world he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness but shall have the light of Life the Pharisees therefore said unto him thou bearest record of thyself thy record is not true they just turned around and said Jesus you're not telling the truth Jesus answered and said unto them though I bear record of myself yet my record is true for I know whence I came and whether I go but ye cannot tell whence I come and whether I go you judge after the flesh I judge no man and yet if I judge my judgment is true for I am not alone but I am the father that sent me it is also written in your law that the testimony of two men is true I am one that beareth witness of myself and the father that sent me beareth witness of me then said they unto him where is thy father Jesus answered ye neither know me nor my father if you had known me you should have known my father also these words spake Jesus in the Treasure treasury as he taught in the temple and no man laid hands on him for his hour was not yet come on this Father's Day I want to speak to you on this subject who's your daddy who who's your daddy let's pray savior I love you God I'm grateful for the wonderful audience of believers who have joined today to give you praise and worship I thank you for every song that's been sung every word that's been spoken but Lord now we have the opportunity to hear your word it's not of anything I can say or do but Lord It's Your anointed word that teaches us feeds us and transforms us God let us receive what you would have for us today for all us we're grateful and thank thankful in Jesus name we pray amen I am proud with a Godly pride and thankful that Billy mcco is my natural father I could take a lot of time bragging on and telling you about the things he's taught me the lessons I've learned the experiences that I've had that I can direct any successes that I have accomplished in my life to the leadership the example and the guidance of my father many here are just as proud and rightfully so and thankful of your natural father yet there are others who life circumstances have dealt you the hand of a father with issues or maybe you grew up in a situation where you didn't have a natural father in your life I am thankful most of all however that spiritually we have the opportunity to all have the same father if we've turned our lives over to Christ for scripture said it this way in 1 John 3 behold what manner of love the father hath bestowed upon us that we should be called the sons of God therefore the world knoweth us not because it knew him not just as the Pharisees didn't know who Jesus was and understand the relationship that Jesus was God manifest in flesh he was now the Redemptive son but he was God the Father manifest in flesh the Creator had now become the Redeemer they didn't understand that the world doesn't understand it either beloved now are we the sons of God and it does not yet appear what we shall be but we know that when he shall appear we shall be like him I want to be like my daddy how about you for we shall see him as he is and every man that hath this hope in him purify them self even as he is pure how do I know I'm a Son of God how do I know who my spiritual father is I should have his attributes I should be like my daddy I should be like him as scripture said you see if you quit sinning and take on the attributes of your father you will become pure as he was pure in our text in John 8 Jesus involve is involved in disputation with the Jews the Super PI of the day they are basically challenging everything about him his honesty his Integrity his bloodline his lineage his Heritage they asked Jesus where is your father in today's vernacular they said hey all this stuff you're saying who's your daddy who's your daddy anyway who who do you get the the opportunity to and who are you proclaiming as a bloodline that you can say this stuff and say that that that you're going to uh set us free Jesus said basically to him said you don't know me cuz you don't know my daddy he said you don't understand the relationship that I've been trying to teach that I am God manifest in flesh verse 31 of that same chapter of John 8 then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him if you continue in my word then are ye my disciples indeed and ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free they answered him we be Abraham's seed our Daddy's Abraham and we're never in bondage to any man how sayest thou we shall be made free they've got Daddy Issues they they can't decide who their father really is Jesus answered them verily verily I say unto you whosoever committeth sin is a servant to sin if you're living a sinful life you're not showing the attributes of your father and the servant abideth not in the house forever but the son abideth forever and if the son therefore shall make you free ye shall be free indeed I know that ye are Abraham's seed but you seek to kill me because my word hath no place in you I speak that which I have seen with my father and ye do that which you have seen with your father and they answered and said unto him Abraham is our father Jesus said unto them if you were Abraham's children you would do the works of Abraham he's arguing you don't even know who your daddy is because not doing what Abraham would do because you're denying who I am but now you seek to kill me now I realize we're reading just a little bit but we're going someplace but now you seek to kill me a man that ha told you the truth you're trying to kill truth which I have heard of God this did not Abraham he said you're not acting like your daddy you claim Abraham as your father but you're trying to kill truth Abraham didn't do those kind of things you do the Deeds of your father Jesus told him said' Abraham's not your father but you're doing the Deeds of your father then said they to him we be not born of fornication we have one father even God now they're still mixed up now who's your daddy is it Abraham or is it God Jesus is speaking to them in a realm that they still can't understand because they are so Bound by the traditions of the flesh that they are claiming God as their father AB Abraham as their father Jesus said to them if God were your father you would love me if God were your father you would love me for I proceed forth and came from God neither came I of myself but he sent he but he sent me because or rather why do ye not understand my speech even because ye cannot hear my words and here's where Jesus went with it he said you guys are mixed up he said Abraham's not your father you don't act like Abraham you're not doing the things Abraham God's not your father if God was your father you would love me you would understand what I'm saying he said let me identify who you are you're still creatures of sin because ye are of your father the devil and the lust of your father ye will do he was a murderer from the beginning you're seeking to kill me you're of your father the devil you're acting just like your daddy you're against truth and you're trying to put truth to death who's your daddy today he was a murderer from the beginning and Abode not in the truth because there is no truth in him when he speaks a lie he speaketh of his own for he is a liar and the father of it how do you know he's lying his mouth's moving when the devil starts telling you stuff he's lying to you when those who have not turned themselves over to God you're not showing and exemplifying who your daddy is if you want to claim God as your father so let us all ask ourselves this question today who's my father who's my daddy whose characteristics do I display in my flesh who do I look like who do I act like who do I talk like who do I live like don't tell me that you're a Son of God if you live like the devil back in 2017 2018 somewhere along there I was asked to speak to the men of a men's conference for the Assemblies of the Lord Jesus Christ later on that year or the following year I don't have the dates exactly but I was also asked to speak to the Louisiana District's Men's Conference and as I studied for that God I felt dealt with me in my studies of discovering some of the things I want to talk to the men to the fathers a little bit today some things that will identify some characteristics that will tell who our daddy really is what is our spirit like do we have the spirit of Christ or do we have the spirit of the enemy being exemplified in the way we behave Proverbs 25:28 says this he that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down and without walls in a figurative way having no walls makes one open to attack you are spiritually vulnerable if you have no rule over your spirit you have no control men hear me today if we don't have control of our own Spirit we are not exemplifying Christ to be vulnerable means you're easily hurt you're open to attack harm or damage you are capable of being physically or emotionally wounded you're open to being damaged Matthew Henry noted Bible commentator said of Proverbs 25:28 the good character of a wise and virtu virtuous man implied he is one that ruleth over his own Spirit he maintains the government of himself and of his own appetites and passions and does not suffer them to rebel against reason and conscience he has the rule of his own thoughts his desires his in his inclinations his resentments and keeps them all in good order men we need to be in control of our spirits today the bad case of a vicious man who has not this this rule over his own Spirit who when temptation to excess eating or drinking or behavior are before him he has no government of himself when he is provoked breaks out an exorbitant passion such as one is like a city that is broken down and Without Walls all that is good goes out and forsakes him all that is evil breaks in upon him he lies exposed to all the temp ations of Satan and becomes an easy prey to that enemy he is also liable to many troubles and vexations it is likewise as much a reproach to him as it is to a city that has been ruined with walls down the unguarded is capable of bad decisions and bad spirits every man in the house I speak to you today fathers are fathers to be or someday want to be a father if you're a man I'm specifically talking to you you got to have control of your own spirit in this world if you're going to be a child of God if you're going to be called the sons of God let's take a moment if you would and let's identify a few bad spirits that you can find in Scripture that men in particular can succumb to if they do not have spiritual Dominion in their own life let's talk about the Spirit of anger Proverbs 22:24 says make no friendship with an angry man and with a furious man Thou shalt not go lest thou learn his ways and get a snare to thy Soul Proverbs 29:22 said an angry man stirreth up strife and a furious man aboundeth in transgression now examples for all of us today don't Point any fingers or raise any hands but sir let me ask you how do you behave when you're behind the wheel of your vehicle and rush hour traffic boy it's suddenly stopped being biblical now didn't it we're talking to self now do I have control of my spirit God help me to have less anger and more patience help me not to be be a furious man that abounds in transgression we look guys learn young let me do speak to some of the young ladies if there's some guy that says he loves you and he wants to date you and all that kind of stuff and every time you have a disagreement he jumps in the car and Spins his tires and throws gravel everywhere sweetheart you better be checking out you're you're you're dealing with an angry man Bible said don't go with a furious man he's dangerous somebody that can't oh I've heard parents put it in their kids listen I'm shooting all over the tree it's Father's Day I may as well talk to everybody you you you know my little boy he's a fig HT R well L dah and you're proud of that you keep telling him that and teaching him that someday he's going to get his bill o c k k o c k e d f I hope I spelled all that right just because we're in Knoxville don't mean we ought to be a bunch of Fighters you see if we aren't careful we'll develop an attitude that we are furious people we act on anger and emotion Proverbs 16:32 said he that is slow to anger is better than the mighty he that ruleth his Spirit than he that taketh the city we must be in control of our own emotions abusive impulsive angry men who physically or emotionally attack their mates or their children are not men they mother I wouldn't want to be your dog let alone your mate they can't keep a job because they have a lack of control over their emotions not a lack of skill the Bible calls that incontinence and wearing it depends won't fix it that means you can't control your emotions you fly off the H y'all can be seated y'all everybody s down Lord have mercy somebody be walking the bench backs before long I'm talking to fathers and men today I'm talking to some real men today you need to get control of your emotions I personally believe in and support the defense of our Second Amendment rights but with that said if a conceal and carry permit makes you aggressive quarrelsome and confrontational you might need a trip to the Altar and get some Spirit control before you worry about gun control we need to be better than this world we need to be in control of our emotions we're God call we need to exemplify our daddy who's your daddy who are you acting like today remember Peter lost his cool and cut off the servant of the high priest ear he was lucky he had Jesus there to bail him out you may not be lucky enough if you shoot somebody's ear off to have Jesus nearby Paul lost his temper when he got all excited and Anan I commanded the servant nearby to Smite him tell him be quiet boy when he did Paul said God Smite you thou whed wall forid us thou to judge me after the law and command me to be smitten contrary to the law he lost his cool let me tell you an out ofcontrol temper can ruin a good testimony that's right that's right they're not going to care how much you spoke in tongues how many times you ran how many times you danced and said Glory if you lose your cool and the natural out in this work a day world and act like a borish crud is angry person Ephesians said it this way way be angry and sin not let not the sun go down on your wrath and then you know what the ne very next verse says neither give place to the devil who's your daddy who's your daddy today gentlemen I'm asking you who are you acting like let me move on there's another spirit that I would remind us of it's found in Proverbs the 16th chapter the 18th verse it says Pride goeth Before Destruction and a hoty spirit before fall better is it to be of an humble spirit with a loow with the lowly than to divide the spoil with the proud the term hoty defined is arrogantly Superior arrogantly Superior disdainful pray you know the dude that gets up and looks in the mirror and says handsome devil brother Whitley preached about this here a few days ago and I want to revisit it over in first Samuel and just stay with me because we're going to kind of do a narrative here of a hotty Spirit Samuel 1 Samuel 251 said in and Samuel died and all the Israelites were gathered together and lamented him and buried him in his house at Rama David arose and went down to the Wilderness of pan and there was a man and Mayon remember a man in Mayon whose possessions were in Carmel the man was very great he had 3,000 sheep a thousand goats he was shearing his sheep in Carmel now the name of the man was nabal and the name of his wife Abigail and she was a woman of good understanding and of a beautiful countenance but the man was chish evil in his doings and he was of the House of Caleb now get the picture he had a great bloodline or lineage that's the Caleb of Joshua and Caleb who was the positive voice of the spies that said we're well able to take the land when they're ready to go into the promised land man he had Abigail he had a he had a beautiful what do they say now he had a smoking hot wife and she was smart too Abigail his wife let me tell you just because you have a lineage of a father that was good like Caleb that doesn't give you the right to be cherish now if you don't know what cherish means let me Define for you churlish is of resembling and character of a chur vulgar marked by a lack of Civility or graciousness surly difficult to work with or deal with now that's what the Bible called said he was chish he's difficult to work with rude in a mean spirit and Surly way ill-mannered ill bred discourteous impolite unmanly uncivil there's too many men act that way nowadays all right let's get the picture nabal was a man who thought he was the man he was a churl a rude dude he had a drop dead gorgeous wife named Abigail who had brains and notice what happened let's look at what scripture says it said and David heard in the wilderness that nabal did Shear his sheep and nabal sent out 10 young men and David said unto the the young men go up to Carmel go to nabal and greet him in my name and thus shall ye say to him that liveth in prosperity peace be both to thee and peace be to thine house and peace be unto all that thou Hast and now I have heard that thou Hast shears now thy Shepherds which were not with us we will hurt them not neither was there ought missing unto them all the while they were in Caramel now get the picture David sent these men out and said just give him a message message they can share here they can work here we're going to be their protection David was a man of authority David was was a man who who had at his command so the the strength and the power of armies and and strong men ask thy young men that they will show ask thy young men and they will show thee wherefore let the young men find favor in thine eyes for we come in a good day give I pray thee whatsoever cometh thine hand ask un to thy servants and to thy son David David was asking for reciprocity if you will a reciprocal relationship we're going to guard your men they will not be hurt in turn if you would just provide some substenance for these young men and when David's young men came they spake to nabal according to all those words in the name of David and ceased and nabal answered David's servants and said who is David and who is the son of Jesse There Be many servants now a day that break away every man from his master notice his egocentric narcissistic self-aggrandizing language just who is David and notice the language here look at verse 11 carefully how self-centered he is shall I then take my bread and my water and my flesh that I have killed for my shearers and give it unto men whom I know not whence they may be i i i my my my my truck my bass boat my golf clubs my Saturday my house my money uh yet it's our bills and our children and your expenses and your problems nabal was either so self-centered and self-absorbed that he didn't know who David was or he was being condescending and haughty in response to David's servants either way nabal was making a catastrophic mistake who is David David's the man that has the power and the authority to take you out big boy so David's young men turned their way and went again came told him all those says and David said un his men G ye on every man his sword and they GED on every man his sword and David also GED on his sword and there went up after David about 400 men and 200 Abode by the stuff but one of the young men told Abigail nabal's wife saying behold David sent Messengers out of the Wilderness to salute our master and he railed on them now again I'm I'm giving you I hope you'll stay with me and see hear my heart for every father and every man in this house today that term rail means to revile to St in a harsh insolent or with abusive language let me speak to all of us but especially to the men again just because you temporarily have the advantage or a little authority to be able to rail on some someone make sure you know what you're doing and that your actions are truly necessary there's some folks if you give them a little bit of of authority it goes to their head they can't be not nice they can't be kind they got to beat people up they've got to be smart elic with their answers they've got to tell everybody I'm in charge I'm the boss now get the picture one of nabal's servants went to his wife and told what had happened the young man continues with his statement to Abigail he said but the men were very good unto us and we were not hurt neither missed we anything as long as we were conversant with them when we were in the field we worked together they were a wall unto us both by night and day and all the while we were with them keeping the Sheep see David had a heart for Shepherds he he knew how things work and and he didn't want them to be in fear of attack or Marauders coming in and stealing the Sheep he cared for them he said just you know just take care of my men a little bit they're going protect you we want you to be comfortable but nabal didn't realize the reciprocity that was desired now therefore no and consider what thou will do for evil is determined against our master and against all his household notice for he is such a son of Bal that a man cannot speak to him nabal was a know it all you couldn't tell him anything I bet if he' had a GPS he'd argued with it I said to The Men's Conference I won't say it to y'all that young man came to Abigail and said you know what that so a son of bile Stay With Me you can't tell him anything you can't tell him anything now by the way if you want to research you know who bow is that's a spirit of an evil personified the devil Satan nabel who's your daddy who are you acting like naal you see then it says then Abigail made haste and took 200 Loaves and two bottles of wine and five sheep ready dressed five measures of parched corn 100 clusters of Raisin 200 cakes of figs and laid them on asses and she said to her servants go on before me behold I come after you but she told not her husband neor gentlemen fathers married men hoping to be fathers to be don't be such a chur that your wife has to sneak and give an offering or pay time to keep you from being cursed with a curse or being a god robber sad when a wife and the mother of your children has to keep secrets from awish brute of a husband to keep him from destroying himself or the attack of the devour coming against your home who's your daddy today sir I'm talking to the fathers to the men and it was so and she wrote on the that she came down to cover of the hill and behold David and his men came down against her and she met them and understand David is not happy David is ticked now David had said surely in vain have I kept all this fellow hath in the wilderness so that nothing was missed of all that pertaineth unto him and he hath requited me evil for good I'm not going to read verse 22 this is your assignment when you go home we'll see how many folks want it is so crude David was so upset I'm not going to read it in mix company see now watch everybody grab their Bible what does 22 say but bottom line David gives a des description of nabal and all of his men how he's going to take them out and when Abigail saw David verse 23 she hastened sled off the ass and fell before David on her face and bowed him herself to the ground and fell at his feet and said upon me my Lord upon me let his let this iniquity be she's taking responsibility for a crude chish man let thine handmade I pray thee speak in thy audience and hear the words of thine handmaids let not my Lord I pray the regard this man of bow even nabal for his name is so is he nabal is his name and fly is with him but I thy handmaiden saw not the young men of my Lord whom thou did send she's begging for her husband's life she's interceding on his behalf and notice I'll skip some of it you can read all this for yourself verse 28 said and I pray thee forgive the trespasses of thine handmaiden she's taking responsibility she had nothing to do with it it's her old hory husband nabal acting like his daddy for the Lord will certainly make my Lord a sure house because my Lord fighteth the battles of the Lord she understands Who David is notice how she phrases this and evil hath not been found in thee all thy days still talking she's talking to David yet a man is risen to pursue thee and to seek thy soul but the soul of my Lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with the Lord thy God and The Souls of thine enemies them shall he sling out as of the middle of of a sling you think she didn't know what David's reputation was she could have given any analogy she wanted to she said I know that God's going to sling some things out she knew how David had originally received his Fame and notice verse 30 and it shall come to pass when the Lord shall have done my Lord according to all the good that he has spoken concerning thee and shall have appointed thee ruler over over Israel she knew David was going to be king she knew his authority that this shall be no grief unto thee nor offense of heart unto my Lord neither that thou Hast shed blood causeless or that th my Lord hath Avenged himself and when the Lord shall have dealt well with my Lord then remember thine handmaiden she said David it's going to be bad for your reputation she's giving David advice all you gentlemen here today you better thank your God if God has given you a level-headed smart wife that keeps you from doing stupid stuff sometimes I'm sorry I said stupid ignorant stuff you better thank your God hallelujah some of us may need to go home and say thank you and do some apologizing to a good woman that God gave you that's been protecting you from certain disaster David had more sense than nabal because he listened to Abigail notice David said unto Abigail verse 32 Blessed Be The Lord Of God of Israel which sent thee this day to meet me and blessed be thy advice blessed be thou which has kept me this day from coming to shed blood and from avenging myself with my own hand and I'm going to skip another verse CU David's still just a little bit ticked with the language he's using so verse 35 says so David received of her hand that which she had brought him and said un her go up in peace in nine house see I have hearkened to thy voice and have accepted thy person Abigail interceded and saved nabal and let me hasten to a close but let me in fact praise team and musicians start getting ready ready nabal's problems were not over even though his wife temporarily protected him for notice verse 36 and Abigail came to nabal and behold he held a feast in his house like the Feast of a king he wasn't a king but I told you he thought he was the man his wealth he was a party animal he held a feast in his house like the Feast of of a king and nabal's heart was merry within him for he was very drunken wherefore she told him nothing less or more until the morning she knew she couldn't tell him anything he was still living the chish lifestyle but it came to pass in the morning when the wine was gone out of nabal and his wife had told him these things she waited got sober and said do you realize who you came up against do you realize who David really is do you realize what Peril you put us and all the wealth that you have amassed in notice what happened and when his wife had told him these things that his heart died within him he and he became as a stone and it came to pass about 10 days after that the Lord smokee nabal and died he had
