Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

When the doors are shut: peace in the shut room

  • Broadcasting to his hometown church during the quarantine, he announces his thought: when the doors are shut.
  • His head text is John 20:19: the same day at evening, the doors being shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst and said, Peace be unto you.
  • The disciples had let fear make them forget his words; they had not yet known the scripture that he must rise again from the dead (John 20:9).
  • Fear makes you forget his promises and forget whose you are; faith makes you do things you never thought you could do.

Scriptures: John 20:19; John 20:9

Shut doors in the older testament: walls, vessels, a dead child, a vision

  • Joshua 6:1: Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of Israel, none went out and none came in — and God was getting ready to bring walls down while the doors were shut.
  • From 2 Kings 4: the widow is told to shut the door upon her and upon her sons and pour out into the gathered vessels; God fills empty vessels when the doors are shut.
  • Elisha, come into the house where the promised child lay dead, went in and shut the door upon them twain and prayed unto the Lord.
  • Ezekiel 3:24: the Spirit entered into him, set him upon his feet, and said, Go, shut thyself within thine house — and in the shut house God showed him a vision.
  • From Matthew 6:6: enter into thy closet, shut thy door, and pray to the Father in secret; the Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Scriptures: Joshua 6:1; 2 Kings 4:4-5; 2 Kings 4:32-33; Ezekiel 3:24; Matthew 6:6

The head text re-read, and Thomas who would not believe

  • Returning to his text, he reads it entire: Jesus shows them his hands and his side, speaks peace a second time, commissions them as the Father sent him, breathes on them, and says, Receive ye the Holy Ghost.
  • Thomas, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came, and declares he will not believe except he sees the print of the nails and thrusts his hand into Jesus' side.
  • After eight days the disciples are shut in again, Thomas with them; Jesus stands in the midst, speaks peace, and invites Thomas: Reach hither thy finger... be not faithless, but believing.
  • His warning: do not be somewhere else when Jesus shows up; be there every time the doors are open.

Scriptures: John 20:19-23; John 20:24-27

After the doors open: do not go back to who you were

  • From John 21:3: Simon Peter says, I go a fishing, and the others go with him — backsliding is never done alone; others always follow.
  • After the night of catching nothing, Jesus calls from the shore and the net is filled on the right side of the ship: try it the Lord's way.
  • In the restoration exchange after the meal, three times Jesus asks Simon Peter, Lovest thou me more than these, and three times charges him, Feed my lambs, Feed my sheep — a chance to make right every denial.
  • The contrast: the next time the disciples are found shut in is Acts 2 — shut in not by fear but by faith and a promise — and they are all filled with the Holy Ghost and begin to speak with other tongues.
  • He closes in prayer: when the doors are shut God is not shut out; then he thanks the church and signs off.

Scriptures: John 21:3; John 21:15-17; Acts 2:1-4

praise the Lord everybody I greets you in the saving name of Jesus Christ and all of those in Maryville my hometown I greet you first episode church Maryville all those watching by way of the internet Facebook live however you're streaming I want to say thank you for joining us tonight I'm bringing this message to you from my in-laws church and Pocahontas Arkansas and so we're just hoping this will turn out good excited about what God is doing I know this is uncertain times we don't know what's going to happen and things are different we're having to do things differently but I'm thankful that we serve a God who doesn't ever change and the coronavirus did not sneak up on him he's not worrying about his next move he knows exactly what he's going to do and I'm thankful for that I give honor tonight to Bishop and sister carpenter pastor and sister Harrison pastor and sister Hammond brother no one carpenter all the saints of God a first episode Church in Maryville all those watching tonight give honor to you I want to preach to you for just a few minutes tonight out of the book of John John the 20th chapter we just came out of the Easter season that Resurrection Sunday Good Friday and this story picks up right after the resurrection of Christ and John 20 and 19 it says then the same day and evening being the first day of the week notice this when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews came Jesus and stood in the midst and said unto them peace be unto you I want to preach to you on this thought when the doors are shut the disciples in this scripture of the disciples their world had just come crashing down kind of like the world that we're living in right now most fled during the garden arrest one followed from afar and because he followed from afar he denied Jesus there's a lesson to be learned there tonight that if you're following Jesus from afar you're not seeing how close you can get to him but how far away I can get and still be a part of the church there's a lesson to be learned in Simon Peters life if you follow Jesus from afar you will end up denying him there shouldn't be how far can I get away from him and still serve Him but how close can I get to him and still be on this earth and then we know the sad story of Judas one of them committing suicide one disciple that followed him to the cross watched him be nailed to the tree he watched him bleed he watched him die and he heard the last words as Jesus said it is finished words that were actually spoken in victory 2,000 years later we know but at that times they seem to be words of defeat at that moment yes we know the story Peter and John and they ran to the empty tomb and there they just assumed that someone stole the body of Jesus because John 9 20 and 9 says for his head they knew not the scripture that he must rise again from the dead so in our reading this evening we find the disciples are shut in their quarantine if you will their self isolated by fear they knew that the Jews had just had their Jesus arrested beaten and crucified now they find themselves afraid fearful full of doubt and fear and they believe that the Jews will do the same to them these followers of Christ have no desire to follow him in his crucifixion and to the cross instead of remembering his words how he would die and rise again they let fear enter into their lives they they fear in to their hearts and to their minds and they lost all faith because of fear see that's what fear does best it makes you forget his words it makes you forget every promise that he's ever promised us fear makes you forget who you are and most importantly it makes you forget who's you are tonight fear makes you do things that you never thought you would do that's what David did David operated in fear when he went running from galata from Saul there he finds himself living with Philistines God haters knows that he spent his entire career fighting against he finds himself living with him why because fear makes you do things you never thought you would do but faith on the other hand faith makes you do things that you never thought you could do David never thought he could stand before Goliath and defeat him that was faith in operation but now David finds himself in fear and that's where we find the disciples they are captivated by fear they're living in fear they are self secluded self isolated quarantine shut in because of fear and let me tell you tonight that that is exactly what fear wants to do to us that is exactly what fear wants to do to the Apostolic Church in this time of uncertainty it wants to make you lose all faith and all hope in our God but I've come to tell you don't be afraid tonight don't be fearful don't be full of fear during this quarantine in this isolation Jesus can do great things when the doors are shut and Joshua 6 and 1 it says these words now Jericho was straightly shut out because of the children of Israel none went out and none came in can I tell somebody tonight that God's getting ready to bring some walls down when the doors are shut walls that you never thought would ever come down walls you never thought that you would ever be able get over and get across God is getting ready while these doors are shut while you're in your house having Church God's getting ready to bring some walls down in your life he's getting ready to bring some walls down in your finances he's getting ready to bring some walls down in your marriage God is getting ready to move when the doors are shut tonight in second Kings the fourth chapter verses 4 and 5 it says when they were come in that I'll shut the door upon me and upon my sons and shall pour out into all those vessels and thou shall set aside that which is full so she went from him and noticed this she shut the door upon her and upon her sons who brought the vessels to her and she poured out this widow woman who was down to nothing the creditor was coming to take her children the the man of God the prophet said if you'll go gather empty vessels and he said shut the door upon you and he said if you'll shut the door upon you and start filling the empty vessels watch what God can do can't tell somebody tonight that God's getting ready to fill some empty vessels when the doors are shut when you're in self-isolation the red story after story of people getting the Holy Ghost in their homes when the doors are shut I've read story after story of people backsliders coming home when the doors are shut I've heard story after story of people who've never would never set foot in a church that are pulling into parking lots with parking lot services that are tuning in on Facebook live and other means on the internet would that would never come and sit on a few but they're watching and they're hearing it and that when the doors are shut they're experiencing God a lot they never have God's getting ready to feel some empty vessels up when the doors are shut tonight's second Kings four and 32 and 33 and Elisha came into the house behold the child was dead and laid upon his bed he went in therefore and noticed this and shut the door upon them Twain and prayed unto the Lord he comes in and this dead baby who was a date baby a promise that the man of God had spoke into this woman's life this great woman and she had made a room for the man of God she made room for her miracle that's what God's wanting somebody to do when the doors are shut tonight he's wanting you to make room for your miracle make room there ought to be a husband that regains the priesthood of his family there ought to be a mama that regains the control of the household during the times that the doors are shut that's what God is wanting to do God's get ready to resurrect some dead things God's getting ready to bring a marriage that was dead back to life again God's get ready to bring a vision that was dead back to life again God's getting ready to bring a prodigal that was dead in a pigpen back home when the doors are shut God's get ready to bring something that was dead that you thought was over a ministry an anointing but the doors are shut and God's getting ready to bring his resurrection power just somebody's life even as I'm preaching you while you're sitting at home you're watching in your PJs and praising God in your PJs you're sitting on the couch and singing yeah but let me tell you even when the doors are shut you don't have to be in church to get that resurrection power you don't have to be at an altar to get the Holy Ghost when the doors are shut God can move like he's never moved before in Ezekiel 324 the spirit entered into me and set me upon my feet and spake with me and said unto me go shut thyself within the house God speaks to Ezekiel and says go shut yourself in your house and you know what happened when he did God showed him a vision God showed him what he was getting ready to do in Ezekiel's life and when he was getting ready to do for the children of Israel can I tell you tonight that when the doors are shut God's getting ready to give you a fresh vision when the doors are shut God's getting ready to show you what you're going to become in here when the doors are shut God's getting ready move like you never thought he would move when the doors are subsidized jesus said in matthew six and six but thou when thou prayest enter into thy closet and when thou has set that door pray to the Father which is in secret and thy father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly you know what I believe in this time of uncertainty in this time of kovat 19 and coronavirus this time of isolation and Quarantine II and this time of uncertainty and this time of things we've never faced in our entire life this time of social distancing if nothing else God helped me to develop a better prayer life God let me get closer to you than I've ever been before I believe God's getting ready to bless somebody's prayer life when the doors are shut I believe when we come out of this when we get back to where God wants us to be I believe God's getting ready to reward some people openly that had been praying in secret when the doors were shut those that have been praying God's getting ready to show you the miracle the miracles on the way the the power is on the way the anointing is on the way the harvest in the revival that we've been praying for that we've heard prophesied about that we've been fasting for it's on its way because what God can do when the doors are shut back to our original text John 20:19 then the same day and evening being the first day of the week when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews 10 Jesus and stood in the midst and said unto them peace be unto you and when he had so said he showed unto them his hands and his side then where the disciples glad when they saw the Lord then said Jesus to them again peace be unto you once again he says it as my father has sent me even so I send you and when he said this he breathed on them and said unto them receive ye the Holy Ghost who soever sins you were men they are remitted unto them and whosoever sins you retain they are retained I want you to notice what Jesus does and what Jesus says to these self-quarantine fearful followers of his because I believe it's what God is wanting to do for somebody right now that shut-in somebody that the doors are shut somebody that that you don't know what to do you're fearful you're afraid the uncertainty in your life the hopelessness that you're feeling the isolation the loneliness that your you're experiencing right now the uncertainty of how the bills are going to be paid the uncertainty of what's going to happen tomorrow when will we be able to go back to church when well I'll be able to be around other people when will I be able to go back to work I believe that the same thing you're experiencing right now is what the disciples were experiencing when the doors were shut in the book of John but notice what Jesus does he steps into their isolation and into their fear I believe that's exactly what Jesus wants to do in 2020 and this year that has just brought one thing after another in our lives I believe that Jesus wants to step into your isolation I believe that Jesus wants to step into your fear he wants to step into your doubt and your hopelessness he wants to step in to where you're living right now that the isolate Jesus doesn't practice social distancing he's closer than he's ever been before as a matter of fact David in his most famous song he said that God leaves and God follows but he said when I'm walking to the valley of the shadow of death when I'm lower than I've ever been before that's not when he's leading anymore he's following anymore but he's closer than he's ever been can I tell you right now that in this time of isolation in this time of social distancing God's not distancing himself from the church he's closer than he's ever been before oh I feel the Holy Ghost in Pokhara I hope you do too tonight but I feel him in this place right now he's closer than he's ever been he wants to step into your isolation he wants to step into your fear he wants to step into your marriage and your family and your finances tonight and then the master speaks peace to their fear that's another thing I feel like Jesus is wanting to do wherever you're at right now no matter what you're going through let the Prince of Peace the one who has the peace that passes all understanding let him speak peace to the waves and the wind let him speak peace to the storm that you're going through don't listen to the lies of the adversary don't listen to the manipulation of the media listen to the voice that still small voice as he begins to whisper and speak peace to your situation and then notice what he does next set of cycles he shows them his scars he shows them who he really is I believe that what God is wanting to do and this time when the doors are shut I believe he's wanting to show us who he really is not who others say he is not who the preacher says but God's wanting you to have an intimate revival of knowing who he is in your own life in your own family and in your own home not because some preacher preached it not because you're watching me not because you felt it in an altar but in your isolation in the doors being shut God wants to show you who he is and he wants to show you his power then notice what he does next he speaks peace once again just in case you didn't get it the first time I'll speak peace once more time to your life and then he Commission's them I believe we're coming out of this isolation greater than we went in I believe we're coming out with fresh revelation and fresh vision and fresh anointing I believe we're coming out of this and we're going to be commissioned to do greater and be greater than we've ever been before and notice this then he breathes on them and he prophesized to them can I call you tonight wherever you're watching from that God wants to breathe the Holy Ghost on you he wants to breathe his Holy Spirit on you and he wants to prophesy over you tonight he wants you to understand just who you are and what you've got going for you that you may be at a low point right now you may be frustrated you may be alone you may be isolated but God is getting ready to breathe on you he's getting ready to fill you with fresh anointing and you're going to be prophesied about you're going to be greater than you've ever thought I believe there's gonna be greater preaching greater soul-searching it's greater so a saving more Bible studies being given I believe we're gonna have greater services greater altar calls I believe we're gonna have altars filled with people getting the Holy Ghost bad mysteries filled with people being baptized in Jesus name why because God wants to work when the doors are shut tonight but notice the rest of that story verse 24 says but Thomas one of the twelve called didymus was not with them when Jesus came so Thomas sweet well no we know that one rule-breaker the one that's not going to stay quarantined the one that's not going to listen to Authority is the one the one that's not going to stay home the one that's not gonna wear a mask in public that's that that was Thomas they were all they were all isolated Thomas said I don't I don't have to stay here and so Thomas I don't know where Thomas was maybe he was out looking for toilet paper maybe they were having a shortage at the time but the other disciples therefore said to him when he got back we have seen the Lord but notice the next words that Thomas says it has given Thomas a 2000 year long nickname because the next words he says he says except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails and put my finger into the print of the nails and thrust my hand into his side I will not believe Thomas says I doubt the words that you're speaking he is not risen he didn't show here we were in fear we're hiding out we're we're scared of the Jews were scared of crucifixion and persecution we're hiding out when the doors are shut on us he didn't show up here but notice verse 26 and after eight days again his disciples were with him eight days of isolation they were they were self quarantined they were social distancing for eight days this time Thomas was with them is as almost as if Thomas said I'm not missing out this time I don't want to be there don't miss that when Jesus shows up whether whether it's seeing while you're watching this video whether it's it in your home whether it's once the church gets going back normal don't miss out all in Jesus comes I don't want to be like Thomas I don't want to be somewhere else when Jesus shows up I want to be here every time the doors are open I want to be here every opportunity I want to watch the webcast expecting and believing that God can move right here in my living room God can move in my car God can move in my office wherever I'm watching I don't want to miss an opportunity so this time Thomas is there after eight days of more isolation the doors being shut and the Bible says then came jesus the doors being said there it is again and he stood in the midst and said peace be unto you once again he speaks peace then he looks to Thomas and he says reach hither thy finger and behold my hands and reach into thy hand and thrust it into my side and be not faithless but believing be not fearful be not faithless but believe and although Jesus spoke those words to Thomas and he let Thomas touch his wounds the other disciples were there and they saw it and they heard it also so surely they would not be faithless but believing as Jesus commanded but let's see what they did after they were least from quarantine after they left there fearful isolation when it ended let's see what they did now as a matter of fact I wonder what some of us are going to do what are we gonna do when that isolation is what are we going to do when the quarantine ends what are we going to do when the social distancing ban is relief what are you going to do first what will you do first where will you go first where will you eat first I've heard people say well I'm missing this restaurant I'm missing this that's where I'm going I'm missing the mall I'm going there I'm missing this I'm missing that but my question is will we go to the house of the Lord have we really missed it that much will we be more faithful to the house of the Lord and the things of God than we ever been before where will we go but let's see what the disciples did after the shut doors were open John 21 and 3 says this Simon Peter said I go fishing so he he says the first thing he wants to do and maybe the first thing some of you want to do you want to I want to go fishing golfing you want to go to the sporting events he said I go a fishing and they said we also go with thee they went forth and entered into a ship a meeting in that night they caught nothing so one chapter later just a few verses later Peter is going fishing in other words he is going back to who he was before Jesus found him but you didn't understand something with me this evening the problem with that is the fact that the other disciples said they were going to the problem with backsliding is you never go alone others will follow you Peter said I'm going back to who I was when he found me I'm going back to who I used to be before I started following him but the problem Simon Peter is that the other disciple said we'll go with you won't forget about the last three and a half years we'll forget about all the promises we'll forget about all the teaching and all the things he told us that we were going to do we'll just go back to being ordinary fishermen and set a Fisher of men and the problem tonight you need to understand if this self-quarantine if this coronavirus drives you to go back to who you were before you before Jesus found you mom dad grandparents young person you need to hear this preacher tonight from living it and Pocahontas Arkansas preaching to you tonight you need to understand something you need to understand that you do not go alone you do not backslide by yourself somebody will always go with you so after this pandemic is over I urge you I beg you I plead with you don't go back to who you used to be but that's not the end of the story because they fished all night the Bible says and they called nothing and morning was now come Jesus stood on the shore but they knew know that it was Jesus and Jesus yells from the shoreline at the disciples and the boater said children have you any meat they answered him no in other words have you called anything you know I've been fishing and hunting before and if that offend you I won't finish your hunt again until the next time I go if you're a member of PETA but when I get home my wife doesn't ask me that I have a good time or I enjoy my day or the woods nice was the water nice beautiful day beautiful sunshine no she wants to know if I got something did a catcher kill something and it was my manly pride for me to look at her and say I didn't catch one thing I didn't shoot one thing today so you got to understand these former fishermen these professional fishermen Jesus this voice they don't know who he is he yells do you have any fish and they had to tell him no we've not caught anything we've caught we fished all night long but he says unto them cast the net on the right side of the ship and you shall find and they cast therefore and they weren't able to draw in for the multitude of fishes notice what Jesus says he says well if you've not caught anything try the right side of the ship in other words you've been fishing on the left side or maybe you've been fishing on the wrong side travel Raisa try my way if nothing else in this isolation in this quarantine in this social distancing you need to try things the Lord's way maybe you've been trying to do everything your way maybe you've been trying to buy your way and set it self educate your way and try to do things your own way you want to try what Jesus you may have been fishing all night long you may have been praying and fasting on that law and nothing's changed nothing's happened in your life but Jesus I hear a voice calling tonight do you have anything going and if your answer is no I've tried all night long I've tried everything my way I still hear that same voice say try it on the right side try the right way try it my way and see what God will do for you therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said unto Peter it is the Lord anybody ever had one of those moments I've been having a bunch of them during this quarantine not knowing where the money is going to come from not knowing where the bills are going to get paid and something just comes in the mail something comes through PayPal I get a text I get a phone call and I say it's the Lord because nobody else can do what Jesus can do for you and your times of doubt and fear and hopelessness then when Simon Peter heard it he jumped out of the boat and he swims to shore Jesus has food already ready they all come back to where Jesus is that they have a and all-you-can-eat fish and chips buffet and then after they had done the Bible says in verse 15 Jesus says the Simon Peter Simon son of Jonas lovest thou me more than these now there's been a debate on what Jesus is talking about these are you what is he talkin about the disciples was he talking about I believe he was talking about the fish that the blessing the miracle that he had just performed Simon do you love me more than these do you love me the miracle Giver the miracle worker more than the miracle because I believe we've gotten real good at falling in love with the miracle and not the miracle worker we've gotten really good at falling in love with the blessing and not the blessing giver we I'm really good at falling in love with the things that Jesus does but not falling in love with him but when these doors are shut what we're in right now I believe there's a greater need and a greater time for us to fall in love with Jesus like we never had before I'm not chasing him for the fish I'm not chasing him for the miraculous I'm not following him for the signs of work miracles and wonders I'm following him because I love him because he died for me because he is my Lord my God and my Savior Simon Peter son of Jonas do you love me more than these yet Lord thou knowest I love thee he said feed my lambs he said to him again the second time Simon son of Jonas lovest thou me he said unto Him yea Lord thou knowest I love thee he said unto Him feed my sheep he says unto Him the third time Simon son of Jonas lovest thou me Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time lovest on me and he said unto Him Lord they'll know us all things they'll know us that I love thee jesus said it to him feed my sheep notice Jesus as Simon Peter three times if he loved him I don't think that's by accident it's not mere coincidence that Simon Peter had denied Jesus three times and now Jesus asked him the question three times I believe what Jesus was doing was he was giving Simon Peter a chance to make it right for every time he had felt and I believe that's exactly what Jesus can do when the doors are shut in your life I believe God is going to give you a chance to make right every wrong you've ever committed he's giving you a chance to make it right for every time you failed him because he wants you to know when the doors are said he wants you to know that His mercy is greater than our mistakes when the doors have said he wants you to know his grace is greater than your guilt when the doors are said he wants us to know his blood is greater than our blunders and you know what the next time we find these disciples isolated when the doors are shut we pick up the story because it's not my fear this time but this time would find them and acts the second chapter when the day of Pentecost was fully come they were all with one Accord in one place we can all quote it suddenly there came a sound from heaven as a rushing mighty wind and it filled all the house where they were sitting and there appeared unto them cloven tongues like his fire and it said upon each of them and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance see this time they weren't shut in because of fear and persecution but this time they were shut in because of faith and a promise this time they weren't afraid of what was going to happen to them they just knew that God had given them a promise you need to go back to Jerusalem you need to go to an upper room and you need to wait for the promise I want to tell somebody in the Holy Ghost tonight that I believe while the doors are shut at our homes we can respond in one way or the other how are you going to choose what you're going to do you've got one decision or another one the doors are shut you can either be full of fear or you can be full of faith you can say God I don't know what's gonna happen and I'm afraid of Corona I'm afraid of the government I'm afraid of the media I'm afraid of the bad news it's coming daily or you can be faith filled and you can say God I'm waiting on my promise when the doors are shut revivals getting ready to happen even if it doesn't happen in the church it's gonna happen in my home even if it doesn't happen in the building it's gonna happen in my family when the doors are shut God is getting ready to do something great in your life tonight I wonder wherever you're at however you're watching right now would you just lift your hands and just say God when the doors are shut I want you to move in my life would you join me in a season of Prayer for just a moment Lord we love you and we thank you for your Holy Spirit that we feel so strong your annoying thing that we feel I thank you God that when the doors are shut you're not shut out when the doors are shut you're getting ready to step into my isolation you're getting ready to speak peace you're getting ready to speak hope and joy you get ready to give me a vision you're getting ready to give me a revelation Godwin the doors are son empty vessels are getting ready to be filled when the doors are shut walls are getting ready to come down when the doors are shut God things that were dead or being brought back to life God when the doors are shut you're gonna give us a fresh vision when the doors are shut God you're getting ready to do great things you're getting ready to show us great things through our prayers through our fasting through isolation when the doors are shut my family's gonna get stronger my faith is gonna get stronger I'm not letting fear reside in me I'm not letting fear direct my life and order my steps but my steps are ordered in your word I'm not holding on to what the enemy says but I'm holding your hand I'm trusting in you and I can hear a voice say peace be unto you I can hear a voice say fear not tonight I can hear a voice say in your time of isolation in self quarantine in self isolation in social distancing God is getting ready to move Lucky's never moved before oh if you believe that won't you just praise Him wherever you're at Oh hallelujah thank you Jesus I'm thankful you can move when the doors are shut in my life oh I'm thankful for it tonight I love you Jesus I love you Jesus thank you once again for joining us tonight thank you FAC Miravalle carpenters ever since Hammonds thank you for what you're doing thank you for the global impact that you're given thank you for
