Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

Who Is My Neighbour?

  • He reads the whole passage at the head: the lawyer's question, the two great commandments, and the parable of the man who went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among thieves.
  • The lawyer, willing to justify himself, asks, "And who is my neighbour?" — the whole sermon is the answer.

Scriptures: Luke 10:25-37

Down From Jerusalem

  • In the word of God, traveling down from Jerusalem is always a downward motion: Jerusalem stands for the church, Jericho for the world, and the road between them was called the way of blood.
  • The priest was too busy to stop; the Levite came and looked on the man's brokenness, and weighed the investment too costly.

Scriptures: Luke 10:25-37

Oil and Wine

  • The Samaritan had compassion: he poured in the oil of a stored-up relationship with God and the wine of communion with him, and set the man on his own beast, inconveniencing himself.
  • Revival in a family will cost something: prayer meetings gathered at home, nights stayed up with the broken, and a willingness to pay the price.

Scriptures: Luke 10:25-37

A Pastor's Story From Port Arthur

  • He tells of a counseled couple in Port Arthur whose home hid knives taped under the cabinets against the pastoral family, yet who were released into the church's care; the husband died speaking in a heavenly language.
  • They can't be too broken and they can't be too damaged; the only question is whether we will invest in this revival.

The Allegory and the Appeal

  • He reads the parable as allegory: the man is Adam, the robbers the hostile powers, the priest the law, the Levite the prophets, the Samaritan Christ, the inn the church.
  • The appeal: this city is yours and this revival is yours — go and find one person that is broken and bloodied, and invest in them.

Scriptures: Luke 10:25-37

thank you now amen amen amen you may be seated tonight and I know I went through preliminaries earlier but you can't honor Bishop pastor and pastor and man MC cool enough uh uh up here what a what a phenomenal pastoral staff what a phenomenal church that here today music team I thought for sure the roof was going to blow off this place and there wasn't going to be no preaching I was already settled down thinking all right we're going to ride this one out tonight I mean so good to have it was so good to have my friends at samford's with us some near and dear friends to us in fact they when they first started evangelizing I think Klein was just about this big right here that boy that you see around around here and he sharpened his teeth at Chili's after church on the table just running his gums across that table you would not find a man of God that loves the word of God more than brother Samford many nights I'd go to the church late and hear them praying in the Evangelist quarters for the next service the next day amen some great friends a great man of God the cart writes thank you for coming and joining us here tonight I want to say something I have complete everything completely off script tonight and I I say that in reverence a man of God sitting in my living room he was missionary to Nigeria Africa for 25 years brother Johnny Garris turned his works over to the Freemans and just a few weeks ago he said to me he said when you get to the East Coast an angel is going to meet you there an angel's going to meet you there no you believe in angels if you don't believe in angels you just buckle your seatbelt because I believe in angels I believe that God is the same God yesterday and today and forever amen I felt that Angelic presence walk into this building today for the very first time and we talked about Revival this morning we talked about Revival this morning and the kind of Revival that supersedes our numbers and our expectations and the type of Revival that supersedes what what we can collaborate and what we can do for God and I believe that I believe it's the start of it here tonight I'm going to take my scripture text out of the Book of Luke the 10th chapter and the 25th verse Luke 10 and verse number 25 it says and behold a certain lawyer stood up and was and tempted him saying Master what shall I do to inherit eternal life this young man this young lawyer was asking God how can I be saved he said unto him what is written in the law this was still the time of the law how how read is thou this is God Christ God manifested into the flesh he's giving him to the answer how do you read what I'm saying to him and the answering said Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy strength and with all thy mind and thy neighbor as thyself and he said unto him thou Hast answered right do this or this do and thou shalt live but he if he would have stopped there would have been a totally different sermon I'll tell you right now but he willing to justify himself said unto Jesus and who is my neighbor who is my neighbor and Jesus said a certain man this is his answer as a parable he gives to him a parable and he said a certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell Amongst Thieves which stripped him of his raiment and wounded him and departed he departed leaving him half dead and and by chance there came down a certain priest that way and when he had saw him he passed by on the other side and likewise a levite when he was it was at the place and came and looked on him he passed by on the other side but a Samaritan as he journeyed came where he was and when he had saw him he had compassion on him and he went to him and bound up his wounds pouring in oil and wine and set him on his beast and brought him to an end and took care care of him and in the morrow when he departed he took out two pinces or or two pieces of of of of of of of currency and gave to them to the host and said unto him take care of him and whatsoever thou spin us more when I come again I will repay thee which now Christ is asking opposing another question which now of the three thinketh thou was neighbor unto him that fell Amongst Thieves the wisdom of the young man that was just willing to justify his actions now said thou showest Mercy unto him and Jesus said unto him go and do likewise go and do likewise this is a parable it is an allegory this passage of scripture is telling us that it has a higher meaning than just simply someone that fell Amongst Thieves just simply someone that was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho it's saying that there is a greater meaning to this passage of scripture to tune in your ears that's why the Bible said to them that half ears let them hear what the spirit saith he's he's saying there is a greater meaning to the word of God right here you need to you need to push past just simply the the characters just need to Simply push packs just simply the the pre the people that we put into play uh to play out this passage of scripture you need to pay attention to what God is saying and in the passage of scripture tells us that this Rich Young Ruler willing to justify himself going to gods and and and asking God to to condone his lifestyle and acting God to to put his endorsement on him trying to Puff his chest out and say look at what I have done look at look at what I have accomplished and look at look at my thought process and and look at how I view things in the the words that come from my lips just now I just want you I want God's endorsement on what I'm doing it goes this Rich Young lawyer goes to God and God gives to him this Parable and he tells them that there is this there is this man that this uh this man that fell Amongst Thieves that he was traveling from Jericho or Jerusalem to Jericho and I I want you to take a special note right here that any time in the word of God that someone is traveling from uh Jerusalem or outside of Jerusalem that it always indicates in the motion of doubt he was traveling down to Jericho it always indicates that they are on a slippery slope downward they say I I'm just going to debunk the thought process that when you leave the church that everything's going to get better I I just hate to be the one to break it to you and and to cry on your parade but I'm telling you every single time in the word of God when someone was leaving Jerusalem they were always headed in a downward spiral Spiral and that and that thing has not changed today when you're leaving the church Church you're not going up you're not getting you're not going to a better place amen you can't get no better than what you felt inside of this house tonight amen you can't get no you can't get no more anointed singing than the singing that you heard here tonight amen you can't get a better place to worship the one true Living God [Applause] I told myself I'll stay a little calm tonight it's hard to do behind this Pulpit this thing is well greased amen it is it has got the anointing all over this pulpit never heading up always heading down he's heading down to Jericho it doesn't tell us this man this story uh why what got him into this scenario what got him into this situation of why he was leaving the the church we know Jerusalem was the it was the type of shadow of the church or why he was leaving the church it just gives us no understanding I don't know if it was a fight in the church I don't know if he got his feelings hurt I don't know if someone forgot to shake his hand I don't know if the pastor walked by him and didn't didn't greet him long enough it just it gives us no indication of why this man was leaving the church it just tells us he was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and we know that Jericho represents the world Jerusalem represents the church he was leaving the church he was he he had busted the doors wide open he was leaving the church amen he just he was going to just leave it to chance he was just going to leave his family to chance he was just going to leave his peace to chance he was just going to leave his Joy he was out of the church he was gone he had and down to Jericho and the Bible said that he fell Amongst Thieves it fell Amongst Thieves these hostile Powers these the these these these folks that that just gonna steal all that that God has given to him all that God has done for him he fell amongst these thieves they whooped him good now I don't know about I've never been in a fight so I don't know what it's like I was a good runner I was quick amen I I and not only that my tongue could wag quick it could talk it could talk myself out of a bad situation and you know it didn't know it also didn't didn't hurt that I was a pretty big boy amen and not not too many folks I just couldn't just throw that out there I want just a quick runner and my my tongue wasn't just slick but I was also a pretty big boy I never I never been in a fight but I'll tell you the Bible describes this boy God he got whooped amen I would imagine he got whooped like like no one's business they just put a hurting on him they whooped him good amen it's kind of like when you leave the church and you go out into this world the world's just come to kill steal and destroy it's just gonna put a hurting on you it's gonna take back everything that God has thought that God has given to you amen he's come to kill steal and destroy he's not your friend he's not your companion amen he's come to rob the anointing of God that he has on your life [Applause] leaving the church going down to to Jericho and and the word of God the word of God tells us that that he that he fell amongst these Thief said can I tell you this road that's that spanned or or or bridge the gap between the church and the world this this road that that was the connecting power of these two cities this you know what we would consider uh being in the church and what we would consider being in the world this road that that built the bridge or spanned this distance they had a historical name about this road this road was called the way of blood and the reason why it was called the way of blood was because of the Hostile powers that would meet men and women along this road and would begin to whoop up on them and begin to beat them and and begin to bruise them and bloody them and and then do things to them that they thought that you know if I was in the church this would not happen to me traveling down this road called the way the way of blood the way of blood from the church to the world it's all right he's going to be all right we're going to get to that point in just a second here traveling on this road called the way of blood the Bible tells us that this man was beat down and it just so happened to be that a priest come walking down that very same road that road that that bridge the gap between the church and the world that road that that road that connected the church in the world the the Bible tells us that that very just just that same very road that a priest started walking down that road that that brings the the way of uh the way of blood or bridge the gap between the church and the world and and their scripture tells us that that that priest would you know you know you know priests are busy folks they're busy folks and just just just let me suck you into this thought process just for a moment because I I do got a point at the end of that but you know they're busy folks they got a lot of expectations on them the ministry they they've got a lot of expectations on them see they got to get to uh Tommy uh Tommy's second birthday you know it's happened five times uh five five years in a row but but they got to get to Tommy's second birthday you know they just got the expectation got to go to Every graduation every every every wedding every funeral you know if your kid gets an A on a report card just got you got it the pastor's got to be there to celebrate the A on the park report card and this priest was walking down this road called the way of blood the bridge the gap between the church and the world boy don't get no blood on that carpet you know I know there will be a pastor's wife there's a lot of pastors wives in this building and they will get they will put you sick of you I'll get in trouble for that amen and this road called the way of blood this priest was walking down that street busy man got to be everywhere he's got to be all things to all men you've got to be everywhere at all times you know uh we got we gotta we gotta pray 26 hours a day we got a fast nine days a week just just busy about things just busy about things and and the Bible said he would he walked down that road and and he didn't even pay him no mind he looked at it from across the street I don't have the time my blackberries burned up or my iPhone is all is all my messages my iMessages I I got emails I got I got to be a district conference I gotta I gotta you know I'm speaking to the youth rally tonight I you know I got I gotta go pray for everybody in the hospital although they only come to my church once a year I've got too much on my he walking down that side of the road and he said I just don't have the time the man is too far God he's too far beaten he's too far bloodied amen he's just I just ain't got the time to deal with that right now deal with all the aspects of the church hey before you think I'm talking about your pastor can I say aren't you not the priest of your home oh I know you thought I was talking about the ministry of this church amen but you're at too many baseball games amen you're you're dealing with this you're dealing with that amen and I'll tell you right God wants to have a Revival in your family God wants to have a Revival in this church amen but the priest was too busy to deal with the Revival that God had for her he was too busy to help the hurt it was too busy to deal with the one that was bloodied and bruised on the way of blood that bridge the gap between the church and the world I'm not I'm not condoning anything I'm just saying it's happened to me from time to time God wanted to perform a miracle you know it's too sucked into this world to hear what God was wanting to do in my life the Bible says going down that very same road a levite levite traveled down that road now levite was born into this thing his daddy was his grandfather was his great-grandfather was all he knew is lineage it was born into this thing he was a representation of the church everywhere he went they knew what he stood for they they knew what he was about and then his last name was this his you know he couldn't go into a restaurant like other folks could go in the restaurant because you know he had he had to be holy at all times he had to look perfect he had to act perfect at all times everything about him represented everywhere he went represented the church amen when they looked at him they'd seen the church levite was walking down this very same road that the priest was walking down but I'll tell you something began to transpire there on that day amen that Levi there was there was a drawing from that Levi there was an attraction to this young uh situation this man that was bruised and bloodied and left for dead you know because the Bible said that he began to align himself with this this hurting man he began to align himself well I would call Revival someone that is needing God he began to align himself he was walking down one side of the road and all of a sudden he began to drift and look and peek into the situation and he began to look and evaluated and he looked at all the bruises he looked at the broken bones he looked at all the Carnage of what this world had done to him and something triggered inside of him maybe it was because he seen the priests just moments ago pass up this young man and not give him a moment of his time not pay him any attention maybe he was just simply because he had allowed this young this man that would gone before him Amen to be his predator or to be his uh His Image or what he should be maybe it was just this this young man had got him into such a situation that he didn't think he could ever recover from hello somebody inside this place I know you know someone inside of your life that you think it's hopeless now you think there's no chance they'll ever come back to God there's just no chance they'll they'll they could ever make their way back to God this levite he has started align himself looking at and you know he's just too broken I I don't think I I don't think the time that I have amen would be worthy of the investment that it would take to to bring this young man back to uh back back into the situation or back into hell he began to look at him in a value way it's just going to take too much of my time it's too hard to get to pre-service prayer it's too hard it's too hard to get myself to the prayer room it's too hard it's too hard you know there's doing a good enough job as a praise team the songs are great I'm just going to let someone else praise God for me amen have you ever got that mentality it's just too much of an investment Amen to try to take back what the adversary has stole from me it's just going to take too much work amen to take back what this world has done to me levite for a moment it began to align himself with the Brokenness of this man the scripture says it goes on and Samaritan starts walking down the very same road this wake this road called the way of blood Samaritan starts walking down this road the scripture tells us that he begins to align himself with the with this broken man does a little bit more is it okay I come down he does a little bit more than just simply align lines himself with this young man he starts to look at this young man well I hope you didn't hear these clothes on my part you know God all things are possible all things are possible I've seen worse God you've turned me around I was far worse than this broken man I've done far more than what this broken man had done God I've committed far more than what the he just simply went down the wrong road God surely God you can turn the situation around he looked at this young man and all his Brokenness and the broken bones and the blood and and all the gore of what this world will do to someone and he said God you've been so faithful to me if you've been faithful to me you can be faithful to him God you turned me around God you can turn this man around [Applause] I just can't help I just can't help to have compassion on the laws I was raised in a drug dealer's home I you know I just it just wasn't a good situation and all the things that I've seen and all the things that I've experienced I I just think I I thank God you did it for me amen I'm a one God Apostolic tongue talking Pentecostal preach you did it for me I just believe you can do it for anyone [Applause] looking at this young man evaluating his Brokenness the Bible said that he reached 10 and he began to get out oil now I know some folks ain't got the time to invest into them I know I know some folks are just so busy that hang God they ain't even got a second to give to him but I just I got some more extra oil I know it cost me something I'm here to tell you if you're going to have Revival in your family it's going to cost you something it's gonna be a prayer meeting that you gather your your family together and say honey enough is enough of this mess we've got to have a turn around in our household we've got to have a turnaround with our children we've got to have a turnaround with our ministry and it's going to cost you something he reached in and he pulled the reserve of oil that he stored up with a relationship with God and the Bible said that he began to pour it all over this young man and he began to saturate the wounds of this man with the stored up anointed oil of God that he gets in church on Sunday morning in Knoxville Tennessee he said I'm going to invest something in him [Music] and I told you I warned you right up front I'm just a homemissions pastor that's it that's it all's I got it's all I got we've been in so many church services we should be able to reach this entire world Amen with the anointing that we feel inside of these walls inside of this establishment inside of this time we should be able to turn this 187 603 folks that live in Knoxville Tennessee we should be able to turn this city upside down because we've got oil and abundance we've got vests of oil and Vats of oil and Vats of oil and that's of oil we are losing with the anointing of the Holy Ghost [Applause] [Music] [Applause] you ain't supposed to clap you're broken it goes in and he pulls out wine you can go ahead and say and do whatever you want to think about all this but I'll tell you for a second wine was representation of a covenant with God a communion with God amen he goes in he pours out he gets that oil out he said God I've communed with you I've heard all the stories of about bishop and all that Bishop done and I I heard the stories about Pastor I heard I heard the stories about what God did I see I seen the photos today amen of that little tiny building where you guys started from amen you know what because someone commune with God Amen he said I want to have this for myself I want to see Miracle signs and wonder I want to see the loss I want to see the loss being retrieved for God it reaches down pulls out the oil or the wine of a relationship with God story tells us that did not dismiss the man's problems but again began to invest into him tells us that he went a step further he picked this man up and he put him on his Beast he inconvenienced himself he inconvenienced himself for a Broken Man I know it's just an empty seat in our car on the way to church how much of an inconvenience could we say today he inconvenient put him on his beast and inconvenience it you know I'll tell you right now I'm not all about walking right now isn't there a matter of fact it's nearly my least favorite thing to do if I got a perfectly perfectly good Beast Chevrolet I choose the ride he put him on his Beast he carries them down to the end or to the end he looks at The Innkeeper he said Bible says that he took care of him he stayed up some nights my wife's going to kill me I want to tell you a story I got five ten more minutes baby put out the Texas room first started that church it's Unique to say the least most of our people were addicted to crack cocaine we were lucky if we could find someone addicted to meth one night my wife and I were late for counseling a married couple we're going to counsel them at their house these folks I would he'd call me up in the middle of night brother I really wanted a pastor and I really love these folks so I just did it you know he'd call me up in the middle night Pastor please help me I got to get this devil out of my house and I'd go over to his house and I'd go looking through everything trying to find all the crack pipes all the SOS pads are brillo pads or whatever he got going on and I'd always ask him brother are you sure this last one because I feel in the Holy Ghost there's another one into this place and he start breaking down there it is Pastor you know and and we we we spent the time with this this couple we invested into this couple we put him in rehabs and Bin heads and all these things we were running late to this marriage counseling there at their house and pastors don't run late because when I drove up there was a fleet of cops in front of this house there's a fleet of cops in front of the house and there was furniture on the front lawn of this house I was only about 15 minutes late I pull up and one of the officers jumps out and comes to my car and says pastor you ain't gonna believe this Pamela had three knives taped to the bottom of the cabinets one for you one for your wife and one for Holly this is just when Holly was just born she said she had a backup plan you guys are like don't ever have that guy come back to our church she had a backup plan to the back of the toilet she strapped three more knives just in case we got out of the kitchen this is Port Arthur Texas more of the story is don't be late to counseling so the second thing is I I looked at the officer as a female officer I knew her well and I and I said would you do you think perhaps possibly you could that you could release them into our care I know what you're thinking but I was like the Samaritan I know how damaged they are I know how broken they are I know what this world has done to them have counseled everything and every aspect I've stayed up the nights and I've prayed for them and I was the one trying to cast The Devil out of their house do you think you could put them into put them into my care head officer looked like it looked at me like I was nuts amen but I'll tell you today amen that that man on his dying breath he was speaking in a Heavenly language amen is the spirit God gave utterance they can't be too broken and they can't be too damaged the only thing you got to decide am I willing to invest into this revival or not [Applause] I'm in my closing I'm in my clothes I'm a quick closer too I'll tell you I'm pretty quick I'm pretty quick of that closing thing went to The Innkeeper lays out some money it's as if he if I'm owed you anything when I return I will repay you it takes a special man to move to a city to start a church takes a special anointing to pick up those reins and say I'm willing to call pay the price if I owe you anything when I return I will repay it now I told you that this Parable was also an allegory in this allegory just simply means it has a higher meaning than just a man that's broken and just a priest and just a levite and just a Samaritan and just an Innkeeper let me describe to you this allegorious following if we will pull out one person's name and put someone else into that description the man that was going down from Jerusalem which is Paradise to Jericho which is this world was known as Adam the robbers that he meant are the Hostile powers the priests that could only observe him from a distance was the law the Levites which could look into this man's Brokenness but was not able to help him in any fashion was the prophets and the Samaritan was Christ the wounds are disobedient or unrepented sins the Beast is the Lord's body the end which accepts all that would enter in is the church and the manager of that Inn is the head of the church which is the it has been entrusted that church into his care and the fact that the Samaritan promises that when he returned that he would return to him anything was old gives to us the promise of the second coming of Christ our lost Revival today a Revival is in the Lost a pastor it's just so much to a preacher it's just so much work it's so much of an investment it's going to take my time it's going to take my efforts can I say this this city is yours God is not going to send another this city is yours this revival is yours I know it's going to take time I know it's going to take effort we all stand here today but God if you did it for me [Music] how much more could you do it for a second generation [Music] the third generation one of those singers just maybe one earlier today did not come through a Christian School If He Did It For Me how much more would he do it for you I walk on this pulp at a platform of Legends [Music] to first generation [Music] probably most thought I'd never amount to anything my daddy told me it to me many times [Music] I preached almost on every continent laughs long history of resume I could spill out but my greatest work is still ahead of me right here [Music] my greatest works it's on this front pew because God has a Revival for them that men like Bishop paid the price for our lost Revival foreign I told you I'm off script I have no notes for tonight just preaching in the Holy Ghost he did it for me [Music] what could he do for you [Music] if we just go and find one person just one person that's broken and bloodied [Music] and out there just one person just one person that needs God man yes sir okay amen if the music could play if we could let us find us a place to pray around this altar today
