Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
Things most surely believed among us
- He reads Luke's preface: Luke, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, wrote in order to his reader, that he might know the certainty of those things wherein he had been instructed.
- Doctrine was not invented centuries later by councils; core beliefs were already being formed in the first-century church.
Scriptures: Luke 1:1-4
You are a theologian
- Every claim about God, Jesus, the Bible, and how we should live is theology — the study of God — and everyone who speaks of Jesus is doing it, well or poorly.
- The works of the Lord are great, sought out of all them that have pleasure therein; we do not need to run from the Bible to know God, because he has revealed himself in his word.
Scriptures: Psalm 111:2
Creation, conscience, and the word
- The heavens declare the glory of God: creation shows that there is a God, and conscience — knowing right from wrong without being taught — shows his revelation written within us.
- But it is in God's word that he has revealed who he is, his character and his attributes, and how he can be known; knowing Jesus means answering who he is from that word.
Scriptures: Psalm 19:1; Romans (book-only, as spoken)
Know it and love it
- Truth is not an opinion to be spoken of as 'your truth'; it is rooted in facts, and truth is a person — to reject the truth is to reject Jesus.
- Paul wrote of those who refused to love the truth and be so saved; the love owed to the truth is the strong love of John 3:16 — for God so loved the world — and it must outrank every other affection.
Scriptures: 2 Thessalonians 2:10; John 3:16
Defend it, preach it, live it
- Jude's call is to earnestly contend for the faith without being contentious with it: defend the faith by joy, hope, and lifestyle rather than comment-section arguments, and avoid foolish disputes.
- The word must be preached — in pulpits, classrooms, and coffee shops; Sister Carpenter teaches one-on-one Bible studies, and anyone with a burden for souls can teach one.
- Paul wrote to Titus to speak the things which become sound doctrine and to adorn the doctrine of God our savior in all things: correct theology means nothing if it does not change how we live.
Scriptures: Jude 3; Titus 2:1; Titus 2:10
Worship in spirit and in truth
- At the well in John 4, the Samaritans had limited knowledge but fervent worship, while Jerusalem had all the books and hearts far from God; Jesus told the woman the Father seeketh those who will worship him in spirit and in truth.
- Hollow worship is the result of hollow theology; a robust theology worships regardless of style, lights, or temperature.
- He closes by leading the students to pray for a hunger for God's word — to know it, love it, defend it, preach it, live it, and worship in it.
Scriptures: John 4; John 4:24

Amen. Amen. When you get there, grab your Bibles or if you're like Moses, get your tablets. Just don't throw them down. We're going to go to Luke chapter number one. And as you're turning back to your seats and grabbing your Bibles, allow me to give honor again tonight to all of the ministry, all of the leadership, all of the pastors, we give you honor. Bishop and Sister Carpenter, we love and appreciate them. To the Ericson's, the Hammonds, glad to have Brother Cornelius Williams in the house, man. He's going to preach it tomorrow night and Thursday night. Are you excited about hearing brother Williams this week, man? Dynamic. Amen. All the day speakers, brother Rodriguez, brother Harpole, Brother Holmes, all of these that are ministering. My first strong tower youth camp, I came in 2008. I was an evangelist preaching revival in Wilson, North Carolina. And Pastor Sean Garnett said, "Brother Whitley, would you like to drive the van with our students to Strong Tower Youth Camp?" I said, "Absolutely. Let's go." And I stayed in the dorms in Mars Hill, North Carolina. I think it was Brother James Cheser that preached the night services. And uh this is I don't know how many I've been to now, but I'm thankful for that opportunity. I'm glad to have Pastor Sha Garnett in the house. Do you love Pastor Shawn Garnett? I love and appreciate him. He is the man. Amen. I love and appreciate my friend. I'm thankful for that opportunity many, many years ago. Luke chapter number one. I feel like the Lord about seven to eight years ago laid a burden upon me to help young people become better equipped with their Bibles and to be able to share the word of God with confidence. And I feel like the Lord has laid this on me to give to you tonight. And so, while I may not preach fast and loud a whole lot tonight, I feel like I'm getting more and more uncomfortable preaching in these types of settings. I feel much more comfortable teaching the Bible, and I want to do that tonight. But I do feel like the Lord's going to do something. >> I do believe it's not because of me or anything that I'm going to say, but I feel like the Lord is going to do something tonight. And if you will respond, if you will open up your mind and your heart, God is going to speak to you this evening. Luke chapter number one verse number one. Luke wrote, "For as much as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us, even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word." It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theopilolis. Verse four, that thou mightest know the certainty of those things wherein thou hast been instructed, those things which are most surely believed among us. There are things that are believed among us and we need to know those things. So here's what we're going to do tonight. I want you to point at yourself. All across the sanctuary, point at yourself and say, I am >> I am >> a theologian. >> Say it again. I am >> I am >> a theologian. Now turn around, look at somebody and point at them kindly and tell them you are >> a theologian. >> Look at somebody else and tell them one more time, you are a theologian. Now, would you lift up your hands? I know we've prayed and worshiped, but one more time, would you lift up your heart? Father, Lord, you know how uncomfortable I feel and I have felt all day. But Lord, I feel assurance from your spirit, Lord, to do what you have called me to do tonight, Lord. And I pray that your spirit and your your word would go forth tonight. These are your people. I am your servant. This is your anointing. And Lord, we are asking for you to have your way tonight, Lord. And I pray that you would put something in us. That you would birth something in us tonight that will lead us out of this place changed and not only changed in our lives, but we're going to make a difference when we go back to our campuses and go back to our churches and go back to our cities in Jesus name. Someone say in Jesus name. Now one more time would you lift up your voice and clap your hands? Come on. I wonder if some young person, you not giving it all yet. COME ON, SOMEBODY LIFT up your voice. Somebody give Jesus some praise right now. Hallelujah. You can be seated. You are a theologian. Several years ago, in his online article for the Huff Post, writer Brandon Robertson wrote his title, "Run to God, not the Bible." Run to God, not the Bible. Throughout his article, he insists that Christians do not need the Bible to hear God's word. He quotes liberal theologian Peter Ends and he says and I quote, "We need to be training our children to cultivate a relationship with God and not a relationship with the Bible." Robertson's argument is that we that that the Bible should be referenced, but it should not be the main place where we come to learn about God or how to interact with him. Instead, Robertson insists that we should listen for God speaking within the culture and the world around us. He adds, "While the Bible is an important authoritative guide for Christian faith and practice, it isn't the foundation or the center of our faith, Jesus is. Studying scripture is valuable, but nowhere near as valuable as cultivating a dayto-day relationship with God incarnate. Over the past 5 to 10 years, an influential megaurch pastor has moved closer to the same sentiment. He made a splash when he taught that the church should unhitch itself from the Old Testament. He says that Christians should not say the Bible tells me so, but should say Jesus told me so. On social media last year, a very influential megaurch pastor who has collectively over a million followers on all of his social media platforms said this in a sermon at his church. And this clip went viral. He said, and I quote, "The idea of theology or the study of God is asinine and sophomoric to me. The pride to think that God could sit in your petri dish to be observed and studied by you is foolish." This is what David said in Psalm 111:2. The works of the Lord are great and studied by all who delight in them. You see, all of these statements that I've just read, all of these quotes that I have given you tonight, while they sound pious, spiritual, even maybe even a little bit truthful, all of them are the theological. All of them are doctrinal. You might have heard or you may have said or may you have maybe you have seen it on social media that people say something like this. We don't need the Bible nor do we need doctrine or theology. We just need Jesus. BUT THE PROBLEM WITH THESE STATEMENTS and ideas is that THEY ARE THEOLOGICAL AND DOCTRINAL STATEMENTS. YOU SEE, WHEN YOU MAKE CLAIMS ABOUT GOD, JESUS, the Bible, the church, and how we should live, YOU ARE DOING THE work of A THEOLOGIAN. AS SOON AS YOU UTTER THE NAME JESUS, you're doing theological work. And the issue is you're either doing theology well OR POORLY. YOU CANNOT ESCAPE THEOLOGY. Let me quote this very unspiritual thing tonight. And I hope I don't get cancelled for this, but it was in the Wizard of Oz that when Glenda met Dorothy, she said, "Are you a good witch or a bad witch?" To which Dorothy said, "I'm no witch at all." But here's the issue. ARE YOU A GOOD THEOLOGIAN OR A BAD THEOLOGIAN? >> But you cannot leave here and go, I'm no theologian at all. Yes, you are. EVERY TIME YOU TALK ABOUT JESUS, EVERY TIME YOU TALK ABOUT SPIRITUAL THINGS, EVERY TIME YOU TALK ABOUT GOD, THE CHURCH, THE BIBLE, THE SCRIPTURE, YOU'RE DOING THEOLOGY. AND EITHER YOU'RE GOING TO do it well or you're going to do it poorly. But you cannot EXCUSE YOURSELF FROM BEING A THEOLOGIAN. POINT AT YOURSELF AND SAY, "I AM A THEOLOGIAN. >> Brother Nate, what's theology? Good question. Theology is made up of two Greek words. Theos meaning God and loia meaning word. Together it is to speak or talk about God. WHEN YOU SPEAK OR TALK about God, you are doing theology. Some in this ROOM WILL SAY, "I'M JUST A KID. I'M JUST LITTLE. I don't know anything about theology. I'M GOING TO LET PASTORS AND preachers do that. Well, I got good news and I got bad news. You're either a good theologian or a bad theologian. >> But you're a theologian no matter what. And when we leave here tonight and we leave here this week, I hope to God THAT SOMEBODY WILL SAY, "I WANT TO BE A GOOD THEOLOGIAN. I WANT TO BE SOMEBODY WHO IS EQUIPPED WITH THE WORD OF GOD. ALL SCRIPTURE is given by inspiration of God and is profitable. And yes, somebody say amen. This production team is doing an amazing job. Can you give the production team a great big hand for all that they're doing? They're going to help me. They're going to help me. When you claim what God is like, who God is, what God has done, what God can do, what God loves, what God hates, how God can be known, what God demands of creation, YOU ARE DOING THE work of a theologian. >> All of these things when you say, "Well, I love God." That's theology. God loves me. That's theology. God hates this. That's theology. God wants me to do this and does not want me to do that. That is theology. THIS IS ALL THE WORK of a theologian. This is not Listen, you do not have to have a master's degree. And I love education. I I I'm pro- education, but you do not have to have a master's degree to be A THEOLOGIAN. YOU can be ignorant and you CAN BE THE SMARTEST PERSON IN THE WORLD AND STILL BE BAD AT THEOLOGY. >> But God forbid that we're great at chemistry and algebra and engineering and we're poor at God's word. Come on. Come on. AND YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE educated to KNOW THIS BOOK. GOD WANTS YOU TO KNOW IT. GOD DOES NOT. My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge. IF YOU WANT TO BEAT UP ON THE DEVIL AND STOP BEING BEAT UP BY HIM, then you need to get some word in your heart. You need TO GET THE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT AND YOU NEED TO FEAST ON THE MANA of God's WORD. IF YOU COME ON, SOMEBODY. IF YOU REALLY WANT JERICHO TO FALL DOWN, YOU BETTER KNOW HIS WORD. Know his voice. Go to the next. Go to the next slide. I JUST WANT TO KNOW JESUS MORE. That's theology because look at the next slide. Go to the NEXT SLIDE. WHO IS JESUS? How how are you GOING TO ANSWER THAT QUESTION? WHO IS JESUS? WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT HIM? HOW CAN YOU KNOW JESUS MORE? HOW CAN HE GET TO KNOW YOU? HOW CAN YOU KNOW THAT YOU can know HIM MORE? WHAT KEEPS YOU FROM KNOWING HIM? WHAT KEEPS HIM FROM KNOWING YOU? WHERE DO YOU MEET HIM or find him? How can you meet him? >> So when you say Jesus, >> THAT'S YOU HAVE TO ANSWER ALL OF THOSE QUESTIONS AND YOU DO IT EVERY DAY. AND WHEN SOMEBODY ASKS you about THE HOPE THAT IS WITHIN YOU, you better have an ANSWER FOR WHY YOU BELIEVE WHAT YOU believe and why you live the way you live. COME ON, SOMEBODY. YOU JUST CAN'T SAY, "WELL, THIS IS WHAT GRANDMA lives and this is what my preacher PREACHES AND THIS IS WHAT MY SUNDAY SCHOOL." NO, NO, NO, NO. I WANT TO KNOW THE HOPE IN YOU. Come on. YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY MOST PEOPLE DON'T ASK YOU ABOUT YOUR HOPE? WE'RE NOT HOPEFUL ENOUGH. WE'RE NOT JOYFUL ENOUGH. WE'RE NOT DELIGHTING IN GOD'S WORD ENOUGH. THY WORD HAVE I hid in my heart that I may not sin against you. Such questions as we have here are all theological in nature. Paul says in Romans there's there's two ways three ways how to know God. Psalm 19 says the heavens declare the glory of God. YOU CAN KNOW GOD by simply STEPPING OUTSIDE OF THIS ROOM and seeing the beauty and the splendor of the Smoky Mountains. YOU CAN LOOK UP IN THE SKY in the morning if it's not humid and cloudy. And you can see the you can see the stars and you can see the heavens and you can see the wonders AND YOU CAN SEE THE BIBLE SAYS THAT THE THAT THE CREATION DECLARES the works of God. And then the next THING IS THAT PAUL WRITES IN ROMANS IS THAT GOD HAS REVEALED HIMSELF NOT JUST in creation, BUT HE HAS REVEALED HIMSELF IN YOUR CONSCIENCE. Deep within you, you know that THERE IS A GOD DEEP WITHIN YOU. YOU know right FROM WRONG. YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE TO KNOW. LISTEN, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SEND CHILDREN TO A university to teach them how to lie. You ask your 2-year-old not to eat the cookie. You step outside the room, you come back in and you ask them, "Did you eat the cookie?" And they say, "No, but you see the chocolate chips in their teeth and in their ears and all over their face. You didn't have to send them to school how to lie." THEY KNOW RIGHT FROM WRONG. It's already in them. SO GOD HAS REVEALED HIMSELF IN CREATION AND HE HAS REVEALED HIMSELF IN CONSCIENCE. BUT YOU CANNOT LOOK AT THE BEAUTY of the smoky mountains and the stars and the and the planets and the sky and nature and understand who God is. YOU CAN SEE THAT THERE is a God and IN YOUR CONSCIENCE YOU CAN KNOW RIGHT FROM WRONG. BUT IT is in God's WORD THAT HE HAS REVEALED himself in his word. He shows WHO HE IS, HIS CHARACTERISTICS, his attributes. AND NOT ONLY THAT, BUT HOW TO KNOW HIM AND HOW HE CAN KNOW YOU AND WHAT IT TAKES. COME ON, SOMEBODY. IT'S NOT ENOUGH TO SIMPLY SEE THE HEAVENS AND KNOW WITHIN YOURSELF. YOU HAVE TO BE ACQUAINTED WITH THE WORD. THE WORD OF THE LORD is perfect. AND HE HAS REVEALED HIMSELF PERFECTLY IN HIS WORD. SO WHEN YOU SAY JESUS, GOD, SALVATION, SIN, CHURCH, WORSHIP, YOU'RE DOING THEOLOGY AND YOU HAVE TO HAVE TO you have to be tethered to something. It's all right. I'm I know I'm going slow. I I know I should be getting you worked up into a frenzy, but I would rather you walk out of here equipped instead of going, "Wow," >> he was loud and fast. I want to help you. >> We are getting beat up in the in the marketplace of ideas because we're ignorant and we know how to do all the religious exercises, but we can't explain the faith. I want to help you. I want to help you. Brother, you keep saying this word doctrine. What is doctrine? Maybe you hear it a lot at your church and you hear it a lot in Sunday school. The word doctrine biblically speaking, look at this means teaching. It means teaching. So when you are talking about God, you are teaching or you are explaining things about God. The Bible refers to what is called sound doctrine and that word means healthy doctrine. So if there is healthy or sound doctrine that means that there is an opposite that means there is an sickly or an ill or a disease doctrine. And God help us to be discerning to know between sound doctrine and false doctrine. JUST BECAUSE IT SOUNDS GOOD AND GIVES YOU CHILLS WHEN YOU SCROLL THROUGH AND YOU'RE WATCHING THAT BRAIN ROT DOESN'T MEAN IT'S A SOUND DOCTRINE. YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO BE ABLE TO JUDGE THOSE THINGS BY SOMETHING BEYOND YOUR FEELINGS, BEYOND YOUR EMOTIONS. WE MUST HAVE SOUND DOCTRINE AND sound teaching. Someone say amen. All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for approve, for correction, for instruction and righteousness. DOES DOCTRINE MATTER? YES. Jesus asked a question. He asked his disciples. He said, "Whom do men say that I am?" People are saying all things about me. Tell me what they're saying. Some say you're Jeremiah. Some say you're Elijah. Some say you're John the Baptist come from the dead. You see, we're living in a some say generation. Some say he's the second person of the Trinity. Some say he's Jehovah Jr. Some say some say some say. Jesus goes, "That's fine. Uh, but you've been around me for a few years now. Who do you say that I am? Well, Bishop Carpenter says, or Pastor Anthony says, or Pastor Garnett says, I I appreciate that, but who do you say that I am? >> You better know who Jesus is. >> YOU BETTER KNOW WHO JESUS IS. YOU BETTER KNOW. COME ON, SOMEBODY. WE CANNOT HAVE A SOME SAY answer when it comes to Jesus. BUT PETER SAID, "THOU ART THE CHRIST, THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD." AND JESUS SAID, "FLESH AND BLOOD HAS NOT REVEALED THIS UNTO YOU, BUT MY FATHER WHICH IS IN HEAVEN." COME ON, SOMEBODY. THERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU'RE NOT GOING TO LEARN FROM BOOKS. NOW, I LOVE BOOKS. AND THERE'S SOME THINGS YOU'RE NOT GOING TO LEARN FROM A CHURCH SERVICE. IT'S GOING TO COME BY REVELATION. WE NEED A REVELATION OF WHO JESUS IS. COME ON. THAT HE'S NOT THE SECOND PERSON. THAT HE'S NOT JEHOVAH JR. THAT HE'S THE ALMIGHTY GOD. IN HIM DWELLS ALL THE FULLNESS OF THE GODHEAD BODILY HERE. O ISRAEL, THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD. Come on. He can be THE FIRST AND THE LAST AT THE SAME TIME. HE CAN BE THE ALPHA AND THE OMEGA AT THE SAME TIME. HE CAN BE THE EVERLASTING FATHER AND THE SON AT THE SAME TIME. HE CAN BE THE LION AND THE LAMB AT THE SAME TIME. COME ON. HE CAN BE THE PRIEST AND THE SACRIFICE AT THE SAME TIME. COME ON, SOMEBODY. HE CAN BE THE LORD AND THE KING AT THE SAME TIME. I'M TELLING YOU, IT'S ALL IN HIM. AND YOU BETTER GET A REVELATION. COME ON. YOU GOT TO GET THIS IN YOUR SPIRIT. YOU GOT TO GET THIS IN YOUR HEART. Somebody say amen. >> I don't want you to have a some say mentality. >> You need to know who Jesus is. >> I'm not saying you're going to have to have a graduate degree to know this. I'm saying if you would just open up this book and ask God TO OPEN UP MY EYES THAT I MIGHT BEHOLD WONDROUS THINGS FROM THY LAW, HE WILL REVEAL HIMSELF UNTO YOU. AND IF YOU GET A REVELATION, THERE'S NOT GOING TO BE A YOUTUBER. THERE'S NOT GOING TO BE A PODCASTER. THERE'S NOT GOING TO BE A FALSE PROPHET THAT CAN PERSUADE YOU. WHY? BECAUSE MY FATHER WHICH IS IN HEAVEN HAS REVEALED THIS. WE NEED A REVELATION THIS WEEK. WE NEED A REVELATION THIS WEEK. MY GOD, I FEEL HIM. WE NEED A REVELATION. I WISH SOMEBODY WORSHIP HIM FOR A MOMENT. I WISH SOMEBODY SAY, "LORD, REVEAL YOURSELF UNTO ME. REVEAL YOURSELF unto me." >> I'm moving quick. I promise. It's all right. You okay? Christian doctrine, systematic theology, systematic Christian doctrine sets forth, look at this slide here, sets forth to answer these questions. Who Jesus is, that is the technical term, christologology, it's the doctrine of Jesus's humanity and divinity. Let me just say this right here. Let me stop for a moment. Jesus is not half God, half man. >> He is all God >> and all man at the same time. Jesus said, "When you've seen me, YOU'VE SEEN THE FATHER." THERE ARE SOME AMONG US WHO ARE TRYING TO DOWNPLAY HIS DEITY AND THERE ARE SOME AMONG US DOWNPLAYING HIS HUMANITY. WE BETTER KNOW WHO JESUS IS. We better. IT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT DOCTRINE THAT WE SHOULD KNOW WHO I know Jesus IS THE FATHER. I KNOW JESUS is the son. I know Jesus is the holy ghost. AND ALL THESE THREE ARE LET ME TELL YOU WHO Jesus is. >> >> That inevitably that inevitably LEADS TO WHY JESUS HAD TO SUFFER, WHY HE HAD TO COME, the incarnation. It's the doctrine of sin. Go to the next one. HOW JESUS'S DEATH on the cross affected salvation. This is atonement or the doctrine of substitution. Let me just stop here for a moment. I know this is a classroom right now. Let me just teach. There there was something that happened on social media a couple years ago. A very famous worship leader wrote a lot of songs in in popular Christianity and he came out and said this about the crucifixion. He said that it was cosmic child abuse. THAT WE THINK THAT GOD SENT HIS son to die for our sins. That's child abuse. And that sounds interesting to our 21st century ears, but it's false. >> FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD THAT HE GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON. MY GOD have mercy. You got to know it. WHEN YOU SAY JESUS, YOU'RE SAYING A LOT OF THINGS. GO TO THE next one. Moving fast. How Jesus dwells in our hearts through the Holy Spirit. Go to the next one. HOW WE CAN BENEFIT FROM HIS LIFE, DEATH, BURIAL, and resurrection. Can I just say this? We need to talk about the resurrection more than we do. >> GO READ ACTS. YOU KNOW WHAT GOT THEM THROWN IN JAIL. YOU KNOW WHAT GOT THEM STONED? WAS PREACHING THE RESURRECTION. NOT JUST ONE TIME A YEAR, but every day that Jesus is alive. He just didn't RISE UP FOR ONE DAY AND GO BAPT. HOW DO WE BENEFIT? HOW DO WE APPLY THAT? Go to the next one. Go to the next one. HOW THE HOLY SPIRIT DWELLS IN THE MIDST OF THE NEW CREATION IN CHRIST or the church. We need to strengthen our understanding of the church. That church is more than coming TO A BUILDING ON SUNDAY AND WEDNESDAY. And we need that. DO NOT FORSAKE THE ASSEMBLING OF OURSELVES TOGETHER. WE ARE TO DO THAT. THAT'S BIBLICAL. THAT'S COMMANDED. BUT YOU MUST UNDERSTAND, WE MUST GET A DEEP understanding of what the church is supposed to do. I one time Ashley and I went to this when we first got married went to this restaurant in Knoxville. He this the host sat us down the at the table. I don't know it was like a Saturday morning and I'm sure I didn't have a shirt and tie on. I was just probably just you know buming it. And we sat down. He goes, "What are you a preacher?" I said, "Yeah, I don't look like it right now, you know." Well, you know, I'm Yeah. He's like, "Where? where do you minister? And we said, well, First Apostolic Church, 5020 Pleasant Ridge Road, Knoxville, Tennessee. HE WAS LIKE, "OH." He goes, "I'm a believer." I said, "Well, thank God." He goes, "I love Jesus. I just hate the church." Um, I hate to tell you this. I'll tell you after I eat so you don't spit in my eggs. But the body of Jesus is the church. And if you hate the church, >> I love Jesus. I just don't like the people, then you don't love Jesus. I LOVE JESUS. I DON'T LIKE THE BIBLE. JESUS IS THE WORD MADE FLESH AND HE DWELT AMONG US IN HIM. Come on, somebody. You're going to have to know this stuff. YOU SEE HOW THIS ALL FIT TOGETHER? YOU ARE A THEOLOGIAN. YOU BETTER GET THIS IN YOUR MIND AND IN YOUR SPIRIT. GO TO THE next one. CAN I TELL YOU THAT HE'S COMING BACK ONE OF THESE DAYS? AND HE'S COMING FOR A CHURCH WITHOUT SPOT OR WRINKLE. HE'S COMING BACK. COME ON, SOMEBODY. LET'S NOT FORGET THAT THIS WORLD IS NOT OUR HOME. I'M JUST A PASSING THROUGH. MY HOME IS LAID UP SOMEWHERE BEYOND. HE'S coming back. This This is what we have to know. Go to the next one. Y'all all right? >> Y'all can lead him out of here. Send him back to Knoxville. Luke wrote to Theopoulos, a young man. He said, "I'm I want to set a record and write out some things. Others have done this and I I I appreciate that they were eyewitnesses, but I want to give you an account of things that are certainly believed among us because there are things, listen, in the first church, there were doctrines being formed that they believed already." Doctrine. the these people who are on social media and on YouTube and all this trying to say that doctrine was formed all these years later after the church and we don't need all of this. That is not true. They had a they had core beliefs already being formed in the first century of the church. That's what Luke was saying. He's saying there are certain things that you need to know. YOU NEED TO KNOW. >> You need to know these things. Someone say amen. I'm going to give you five things tonight. I'm going to go fast. You all right? You okay? >> Five things we need to know and love doctrine, defend doctrine, preach doctrine, live doctrine, and worship in sound doctrine. Go to the next slide. Know and love doctrine. My Lord have mercy. It's hot up here. You know, if you had hair, your glasses would stay on no matter what's happening. They just mean this. I I my head is as smooth. I mean, I'm telling you like they just fallen right off. Where did that come from? I don't know. No, I can't even see right now. I hope you're laughing. No. And love doctrine. We are living in an age where this is a popular statement. That's just your truth. Um, let me just speak my truth. I don't think that word you're using means what you think it means because what you mean is opinion. You see, you can say that all you want, >> but you better understand, don't let facts get in the way of your opinion because truth is rooted in facts and you need to know truth. You need to know truth. That's just your truth. I'm gonna let you speak your truth. That's opinion. >> So when someone when you when you begin to share with them the word of God and they say that's just your truth. NO, IT'S GOD'S TRUTH. And if YOU DON'T LIKE ME, THAT'S FINE. TAKE IT UP WITH HIM. I'M JUST A MESSENGER. I didn't write it. Are you saying I ARE YOU SAYING I'M NOT SAYING ANYTHING? It is written, MAN SHALL NOT LIVE BY BREAD ALONE, BUT BY EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD. ARE YOU SAYING I'M NOT SAYING ANYTHING? I'M LETTING GOD SPEAK. AND IF YOU WANT TO BELIEVE THAT OR NOT, IT'S UP TO I'M JUST GOING TO SHAKE THE DUST OFF OF MY GOWN. I'M JUST GOING TO SHAKE THE DUST OFF OF MY SANDALS. YOU CAN BELIEVE IT OR NOT. AND YOU CAN SAY IT'S YOUR TRUTH OR NOT YOUR TRUTH. I'M TELLING YOU, LET ME JUST SAY THIS. TRUTH is a person. Jesus said, "I am the truth." AND IF YOU'RE REJECTING TRUTH, YOU'RE REJECTING JESUS. >> YOU'RE NOT REJECTING ME. WE NEED TO GET SOME BOLDNESS AND SAY, "I DON'T CARE IF YOU HATE ME. I DON'T CARE IF YOU REJECT ME. I DON'T CARE IF YOU'RE NOT MY FRIEND. I DON'T CARE IF YOU UNFOLLOW ME. IT'S HIS TRUTH AND I KNOW TRUTH AND HE IS THE TRUTH. YOU NEED TO KNOW IT, >> but you also need to love it." Paul wrote in second Thessalonians, it's not enough to know things because they refused to love the truth and be so saved. That word love that he uses here is agape. You've probably heard of that before, haven't you? It's used in John 3:16. For God so loved the world. That is the strongest kind of love and that's the kind of love that we are to have for the truth. >> But I know too many young people and I said it last night. I'm going to say it again. I KNOW TOO MANY young people who allow one wrong affection. >> I love her. Okay. I love him. I know he doesn't believe this way, but I just love him. You know, here's the other thing, too. Is this all right? I'm feeling my help. If if they just if they show up for one service, that does not give you the green light to marry him. If they get, come on, somebody they can get baptized and they can get the Holy Ghost. But I'm telling you, YOU NEED TO SEE SOME fruit of the SPIRIT BEFORE YOU START TALKING ABOUT the Come on. WE SHOULDN'T GO MISSIONARY DATING. GO ON, I'M LOOKING FOR SOMEBODY. COME ON. YOU NEED TO SEE THEM IN THE ALTAR. YOU NEED TO SEE THEM PAYING. OPEN UP THEIR CHECKBOOK. ARE THEY TITHERS? ARE THEY GIVERS? COME ON, SOMEBODY. DON'T JUST START DATING SOMEBODY, BUT THEY SHOW UP ONE SERVICE. COME ON. YOU NEED TO SEE SOME FRUIT IN THEIR LIFE. YOU NEED TO SEE SOME DON'T DON'T DON'T BE FOOLED BY A FEELING. You need to love truth. >> You need to love truth more than you love having a boyfriend or a girlfriend. >> But, BROTHER NATE, I'M SINGLE AND ALONE. I WOULD RATHER YOU BE SINGLE AND ALONE AND IN LOVE WITH JESUS THAN MARRY THE WRONG PERSON AND BE MISERABLE AND BACKSLIDE. JESUS WAS SINGLE. COME ON, SOMEBODY. PAUL WAS SINGLE. COME ON, SOMEBODY. YOU'LL MAKE IT. Somebody say yes. >> I went I'm It's all right, y'all. Okay. Number two, defend doctrine. Know and love truth. Number two, defend doctrine. Jude said to earnestly contend for the faith. Unfortunately, we have too many people who want to be contentious with the faith. There's a difference. You are to contend for the faith, not be contentious with the faith. >> Did you see what they put in the comment section? Let me just tell you, Acts 2:38 and Deuteronomy 6 and4. And where are they at? Are they showing up to your church with that spirit? If we would get out of the gutter of comment sections and put our nose in the gutter of this book. Come on, somebody. WE DON'T YOU DON'T NEED TO WALK ONTO YOUR COLLEGE CAMPUS OR INTO YOUR CLASSROOM AND SAY ONE GOD APOSTO JESUS NAME TONGUE TALKER. WHO WANTS TO FIGHT? WHO WANTS TO ARGUE? I GOT ACT TWO. ACTS AND 238. ACTS 238 OR HELL. NO. No sir. Please don't do that. It's Acts 238 in heaven. >> THEY SHOULD THEY SHOULD SEE YOUR JOY AND SEE YOUR HOPE. THEY SHOULD HEAR YOUR LANGUAGE AND YOUR LIFESTYLE AND SEE YOUR LOVE AND SAY, "CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT THE HOPE THAT'S IN YOU? CAN YOU WHY HOW ARE YOU STILL SMILING AFTER THAT DIAGNOSIS? AND HOW ARE YOU STILL WORSHIPING AFTER ALL OF THAT? YEAH, YOU'VE GONE THROUGH. HOW DO YOU IT'S IT'S JESUS INSIDE OF ME. CAN I TELL YOU ABOUT JESUS? Defend it. Don't be contentious WITH IT. PAUL SAID, "AVOID FOOLISH and ignorant disputes. You will win 100% of the arguments that you don't get into. If you can't help yourself tripping over yourself to get in the comment section to argue with somebody, you have too much time on your hands. That is foolish. LISTEN, WE'RE NOT called to win arguments. We're called to win souls. AND IF WE WOULD GET SO BAPTIZED WITH THE SPIRIT AND SO BAPTIZED WITH HIS WORD, WE'LL TEACH PEOPLE. WE'LL LOVE PEOPLE. WE'LL SHOW PEOPLE. WE'LL BRING LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT THE CHURCH. LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT MY CHURCH. LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT MY JESUS. LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT WHAT HE'S DONE. YOU DON'T HAVE TO WIN EVERY ARGUMENT. JUST REACH FOR LOST SOULS. >> >> Number three, preach. How can they HEAR >> WITHOUT A PREACHER? >> Don't you get too preachy with me. The world will get preachy with us. >> They're preaching their doctrines and their religion every day. >> They're telling us about gender ideology and sexual revolutions and all kinds of nonsense. THEY'RE PREACHING. IT'S TIME FOR US TO START PREACHING JESUS. IT'S TIME FOR US TO START PREACHING THE HOPE OF THE WORLD. COME ON. WE NEED TO PREACH THE DOCTRINE. WE NEED TO PREACH THE WORD. BE INSTANT IN SEASON and out of season. Preach the word. Preach the word. Preach the word. Preach the word. Come on. Brother Carpenter today WE WERE AT A COFFEE SHOP. BROTHER CARPENTER TODAY STOPPED SOME YOUNG LADY AND INVITED HER AND SAID, "MY WIFE, SISTER CARPENTER, SHE TEACHES ONE-ON-ONE BIBLE STUDIES. WHY DON'T YOU COME SUNDAY NIGHT AND WE GET CONNECTED TOGETHER AND SHE'LL TEACH YOU A BIBLE STUDY. YOU DON'T NEED A PULL PIT TO PREACH. ALL YOU HAVE TO HAVE IS A BURDEN FOR LOST SOULS. GET YOU A BIBLE STUDY. GET INTO HIS MARVELOUS LIGHT. GET SEARCH FOR TRUTH. GET EXPLORING GOD'S WORD. GET YOU A BIBLE STUDY AND TEACH AND PREACH IT. COME ON. WE GOT TO PREACH THE WORD. >> I'm just waiting on I'm just waiting FOR MY PASTOR TO ASK ME TO PREACH. NO, you're asking him to let you perform. >> Let me just stop and just say this. I don't let anybody preach who doesn't love souls. If you won't get into a Sunday school classroom, you're not getting behind a pullpit. >> If you won't GO TO A COFFEE SHOP AND TEACH A BIBLE STUDY, THIS AIN'T for you. Why? Because this is a this is it. COME ON, SOMEBODY. I'M NOT UP HERE PERFORMING. I DON'T NEED A SPOTLIGHT. YOU DON'T NEED A IF YOU IF YOU LOVE PEOPLE, IF YOU LOVE SOULS AND YOU LOVE THE WORD OF GOD, YOU'LL WANT TO SHARE IT. NO MATTER IF IT'S IN A PULL PIT OR A CLASSROOM, START A P7. START A CMI. Someone say yes. >> Moving fast. Come on, musicians. Get ready. Know it. LOVE IT. DEFEND IT. PREACH IT. Number four, live it. >> >> Is that all right? Yeah. know it, LOVE IT, defend it, preach it, >> but you've also better live it. >> DON'T YOU PREACH TO somebody and then live like a helion. Paul wrote to Titus a young man, "But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine." He goes on to say, "That they may adorn the doctrine of God, our savior, in all things." In other words, preach it, but you need to adorn what you're preaching. We're not, let me, let me explain. We're not dressing up the truth. Instead, we are beautifying the truth by how we live. I heard somebody said, I read it. Someone said, there's five gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and you. If they don't read the first four, they will definitely read you. How you live is a testimony to the world around you. >> Listen, I love shouting. I love running. I love singing. I love clapping. I love all the things that we're doing. But don't do that here and go out there and tell dirty jokes and share awful memes like nons. Are y'all okay? Adorn it. ADORN IT. LIVE IT. PREACH IT. LOVE IT. DEFEND IT. BUT YOU BETTER LIVE WHAT YOU PREACH. >> COME ON, SOMEBODY. YOU GOT TO LIVE THIS THING. CORRECT THEOLOGY AND DOCTRINE DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING IF IT DOESN'T AFFECT YOUR LIFESTYLE. >> I'm apostolic. They're apostolic. They just don't dress like us. >> Let me just stop here and see. Oh, okay. A man should not wear that which pertains to a woman. Are you saying, "I didn't write it." But I'm telling you, IF YOU'RE GOING TO PREACH IT AND DEFEND IT AND LOVE IT AND KNOW IT, YOU GOT TO KNOW HOW TO. DON'T SKIP THAT STEP. WE GOT TO LIVE THIS THING AS MUCH AS WE LOVE IT AND PREACH IT. COME ON, SOMEBODY. WE'VE GOT TO LIVE THIS THING NOT JUST ON MONDAY. YOU JUST CAN'T LIVE THIS THING A STRONG TOWER IN NYC. YOU GOT TO LIVE IT AND LOVE IT AND PREACH IT AND DEFEND IT EVERY DAY. Would you lift up your hands right now over the sanctuary? God, baptize us with a love of truth. Baptize us with a love of truth. But God, we want to adorn the doctrine. Stand. Come on, stand to your feet. Oh Jesus. Good works does not save us. Good works do not save us. But if you're saved, you will do good works. There must be a practice of what you believe. belief, wrong or right, always influences behavior. And there are some, I got one more, I know, just listen. There are some who will compromise their doctrines because of what they want to do. >> When y'all, I'm not trying to be whatever. I'm not trying to be mean and rude and crude. I'm just trying to tell you. I'm trying to warn you. When you start seeing people compromise lifestyle, it always influences their doctrine. Happens every time. Bre, I know you. I'm telling you. Because if they're willing, it's like jingga. You ever played Jenga before? You play Jenga? Those are that, you know, you see the wood blocks and you start to, you know, push out the block and you pull it out and you put it on top. You do it over and over, it starts to get real tall. But the issue is that's like doctrine and theology. If you start pushing on the wrong thing, the structure is going to be compromised. It's like a sweater. Trust me, you do not need a sweater right now. But if you get a pick on a wool sweater, you think, "Well, I just got that little pick right there." But if you start to pull on it, it's compromised somewhere else, right? If you start to compromise something, any of this doctrine, any of these, something else is going to be compromised. Someone say, "Know it." >> Love it. >> Love it. >> Defend it. >> Defend it. >> Preach it. >> Preach it. >> Live it. >> Live it. >> Here's the last one. I'm out of here. We must worship in sound doctrine. You see, hollow worship is always the result of hollow theology. >> Man, I can't worship to that song there. It's not fast enough. I can't worship in here. It's too dark. I can't worship in here. IT'S TOO LIGHT. I CAN'T WORSHIP IN HERE. IT'S TOO HOT. I can't worship in here. It's too cold. You see, your worship is the result of your theology. And when you have a robust theology, it doesn't matter if there's lights, smoke, bass drum, guitar, lot. It's >> I don't I can't That has too much of a twang for me. I can't worship. Buddy, I don't care if it's southern gospel, black gospel, contemporary. It doesn't matter what it is. If I'm if I've got Jesus in my heart, he's worthy of my worship. No matter the key, who's singing it, what song it is, WHAT STYLE IT IS, WHY IT'S ABOUT HIM. John chapter number four, I'm almost done. Jesus met the woman at the well, the Samaritan woman. Says, "Give me something to drink. Are you a Jew asking me, a Samaritan, for a drink of water?" He said,"Woman, if you knew who was asking you for a drink of water and what I could give you." Oh, she wants to get into a Bible study. Oh, you Jews. Yeah. Yeah. You Jews, you say, "Got to worship over there in Jerusalem. We Samaritans over here in Mount Gazeram." Here's the issue. The Samaritans only followed and trusted the first five books of the Old Testament, the Penetuk, the Torah. They only followed those. They rejected everything else, the historical books and the prophets and the wisdom books. They rejected all of that. They rejected the writings. They only had the five the first five books of the Old Testament. But here's the thing. Just wait. Just wait. Just just listen to me. They had limited knowledge but they had fervent exuberant worship. They could outworship everybody but they had limited knowledge. You see, but the Jews in Jerusalem had the entire 39 books of the Old Testament. They had all of it. They had the Torah. They had the historical books. They had the wisdom books. They had the writings. They had the prophets. BUT THE PROPHET ISAIAH said they've got the right information, but their hearts are far from me. They were right theologically, BUT DIDN'T HAVE ANY HEART IN THEIR WORSHIP. SO ON ONE SIDE they had limited knowledge and exuberant worship and the other SIDE HAD ALL SORTS OF KNOWLEDGE and they refused to worship him. AND JESUS SAID TO THE WOMAN at the well he saidoman THE FATHER SEEKETH SUCH WHO WILL WORSHIP him in spirit and in truth. YOU SEE, WE'VE GOT TO HAVE TRUTH. WE'VE GOT TO KNOW WHO HE IS. WE GOT TO KNOW WHAT HE'S DONE. BUT WE ALSO HAVE TO HAVE THE SPIRIT THAT SAYS, "I LOVE YOU, LORD. I love you, Jesus." Come on. I wonder if somebody I wonder if somebody will say, "You know what I'm going to do this week? I'm making up my mind. I'm going to know truth. I'm going to love the truth. I'm going to defend the truth. I'm going to preach the truth. I'm going to live THE TRUTH. AND I'M GOING TO WORSHIP IN SOUND TRUTH. I WONDER IF SOMEBODY would lift up their hands, lift up their heart right now. And somebody would begin to lift up their VOICE AND SAY, "LORD, THAT'S WHAT I WANT. I AM A THEOLOGIAN. I AM A THEOLOGIAN. I AM I I DO KNOW THEOLOGY. I MIGHT NOT KNOW IT ALL, BUT GOD, I PRAY YOU A DEPOSIT." COME ON, SOMEBODY. Every young person, every teenager, I want YOU TO COME. I WANT YOU TO COME PACK THIS AREA. PACK THE AISLES IF you can. Get as close as you can because the Lord is about to descend in this room. And he is ABOUT TO DEPOSIT INTO YOUR spirit a love for truth and a love for doctrine. Come on now. As you get closer, come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on, pastors. Come on. Come on. Let's not wait. COME ON. PASTORS, YOUTH PASTORS, get around them. I want you to lift up your hands right now. Now, I want you to lift up your hands. I want you to lift up your hands. And I want YOU TO LIFT UP YOUR VOICE before they sing. We're going to do this. I want you to pray, "Lord, give me knowledge. Give me knowledge, Lord. Lord, give me a hunger to seek your word. Open my eyes that I might behold wondrous things from thy law." Come on, let that be your prayer right now. I want to know truth. I don't want to be ignorant OF TRUTH. I DON'T WANT TO BE IGNORANT OF DOCTRINE. LORD, PUT A HUNGER. Those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, THEY SHALL BE FILLED. THEN I WANT YOU TO PRAY, LORD, give me a love for truth. Give me a love for truth. Give me a love, Lord. Let me fall in love with your word. LET ME FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR WORD. COME ON. LET ME FALL IN LOVE WITH DOCTRINE. LET ME FALL IN LOVE WITH THEOLOGY. IT'S NOT just for OLD FOLKS. AND IT'S NOT JUST FOR PREACHERS. IT'S FOR ME. Let me love it. Let me love it. Let me love it. Come on. Come on. Let that be your prayer. Come on. Let that be your prayer. I want to know it. I want to love it. I want to know it. Now, lift up your hands and say, "Lord, I want to defend it. Lord, I pray that you would help ME TO TEACH BIBLE STUDIES. LORD, I PRAY THAT YOU would help me to give an answer for those who would ask for the hope. Oh my God, in the NAME OF JESUS, GOD, I PRAY THAT YOU WOULD RAISE UP APOLOGISTS. I I PRAY THAT YOU WOULD RAISE UP TEACHERS. I PRAY, GOD, THAT YOU WOULD raise up Come on, lift up your voice. Lift up your voice. Lift up your voice. Lift up your voice. Come on. As they begin to sing, I want you to pray, "LORD, LET ME BE A TEACHER of your word. Let me be a preacher of your word. Let me teach Bible studies. LET ME START a P7. Let me start a CMI. Lord, let me do something. Teach somebody in my family a Bible study." >> Come on. >> Come on. That's it. Come on. That's it. In the name of Jesus. >> In the name of Jesus. In the name of Jesus. >> God, do it right now. Do it right now. Do it right now. Do it right now. >> Burst it in us. Oh God. Burk it in us. That's it. Lay your hands on somebody. Lay your hands on somebody. Lay your hands on somebody. >> He's going to do it. >> He's going to do it. You are one. >> You are my You are You are my You are one. >> Come on. I lay your hands on somebody. Come on. Pray with somebody in the name of Jesus. >> In the name of Jesus, I am a theologian. Here's what we're going to do. I want you to pray this. >> God told Ezekiel the prophet. He said, "Take the scroll and eat it." In Revelation, HE TOLD JOHN, "TAKE THE BOOK and eat it." HERE'S WHAT WE'RE GOING TO PRAY. THAT GOD WOULD GIVE US a hunger for his word. If you will MAKE THAT YOUR PRAYER, SAY, "LORD, make me hungry for your word. Make me hungry for your word. It's meat for your soul. It's milk for your soul. It's it's daily bread." I want you to lift up your hands and I want you to say, "Lord, give me a hunger for truth. Give me a hunger FOR YOUR WORD." IF YOU'RE GOING to lay your hand on your stomach or on your mind, say, "Give me a hunger for it, God." Your word says, "If you hunger and thirst AFTER RIGHTEOUSNESS, WE SHALL be filled." I pray right now, Father, in the name of Jesus, that every young person under the sound of my voice that you would give them a hunger for your book, for your words. Come on, let that be our prayer. Let that be our prayer. Give us a hunger for truth. Give us a hunger for your words. It's bitter to my lips, but it was sweet. Oh God, give us a hunger. It's sweeter than the honey. Come on, lift up your voice and pray one more time. All across the sanctuary, I want to hear young people. Come on. I want to hear young people. Come on. You don't need a bass drum. You don't need a guitar. I love it. I want to I want to hear your voice. I WANT TO HEAR YOUR VOICE. Come on. I love it. BUT I ALSO WANT TO WORSHIP HIM. I WANT TO love him. HE'S EXALTED HIS WORD ABOVE HIS NAME. I want your word. >> Come on, teenager. Don't let the word tell you that you don't have to. You can't understand God's word. Don't let the enemy tell you that you can't UNDERSTAND GOD'S WORD. WE'RE GOING TO WALK OUT OF HERE TONIGHT WITH A HUNGER. WE'RE GOING TO WALK OUT OF HERE TONIGHT WITH AN INSATIABLE HUNGER. NOW, I want you to lay your hands on your neighbor, your friend right now and say, "Lord, help my friend to love your word. Give them courage and give them strength and give them wisdom. God, help me to help them and give them the words to say when I feel weak and I don't want to do it. Come on. That's it. That's it. That's it. That's it. Begin to pray in the Holy Ghost. Begin to pray in the spirit. He's trying to burst something in us tonight. It's his word that's going to keep us. Take with you words. Take with you words. Take with you words. Take with you words. >> >> us. Oh, how he loves us. Oh, how >> he loves us. Oh, he loves He loves us. Oh, how he loves us. Oh, how he loves us. Oh, how he loves. Now we are his portion. I believe God's called some Bible study teachers in the house. Come on. I believe God has called some kids quest workers in the house. Come on. I believe our schools are not going to be the same because some theologians are going home. Some theologians are going home that are going to turn THEIR HIGH SCHOOLS UPSIDE DOWN. Some theologians are going home to turn their middle school middle schools upside down. Come on, let's thank him for what he's done. Come on, lift your voice all across the sanctuary tonight. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Oh, we thank you Lord in Jesus name. Come on, look to your neighbor and say, you are a theologian.
