Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

“But I am a worm”: the messianic psalm

  • Pastor Anthony preached part one this morning; he gives part two. He calls attention to Psalm 22, a messianic psalm, and reads verse 6: “But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.” His subject is “The Ministry of the Worm.”
  • Written a thousand years before Christ, the chapter reads like a firsthand witness at the foot of the cross: “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me”; the scorn of those who shoot out the lip and shake the head; “my strength is dried up like a potsherd”; “I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me”; “they part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.”
  • He recalls the first and only time his dad took him fishing — the nightcrawlers in the styrofoam cup, the worm wrapped around the hook — and remembers he is no fisherman; and he sings the old hymn: “At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light... for such a worm as I.”

Scriptures: Psalm 22:1, 6-8, 15, 17-18

Tola: the crimson worm

  • Job also spoke of man “that is a worm, and the son of man, which is a worm.” The Hebrew word for worm, tola, is the same word used for scarlet and crimson: the crimson worm was crushed to produce the dye, and it bore its young by fastening itself to a tree and dying, leaving a scarlet spot on the limb.
  • The same word stands in Isaiah 1:18: “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” The worm died for the worm — he was crushed for us so we could be covered and cleansed.
  • The blood still bleeds: the USS Arizona still leaks oil today, decades after the attack at Pearl Harbor, and there is something far more precious still flowing — you never outgrow, outrun or out-sin the blood of Jesus.

Scriptures: Job 25:6; Isaiah 1:18

Never get tired of the blood

  • A few years ago, when he was dating a girl in Knoxville named Ashley and still had hair, his barber John could not understand why the church at the big church on Pleasant Ridge Road with the school preached about blood all the time — it gave him the heebies; but we never need to get tired of hearing about the blood, or embarrassed about the Old Rugged Cross.
  • He closes by inviting anyone not yet baptized in the name of Jesus Christ to be baptized right then — “here's water; what doth hinder thee?” — and after prayer he dismisses the congregation in Jesus' name.

Scripture index: Psalm 22:1, 6-8, 15, 17-18; Job 25:6; Isaiah 1:18.

more time come on can you lift him up you can hear yourself now can you just say I love you Jesus I love you Lord hallelujah hallelujah you can be seated here tonight the ministry of the worm this this text that we read originally pinned by King David Psalm 22 is considered to be a Messianic Psalm a a a chapter with prophetic undertones about the coming Messiah it is Rich with significance in meaning we're hit right at the beginning of the chapter with a with a statement that Echoes again in the New Testament verse number one my God my God why hast Thou forsaken me this is what Jesus Jesus cried out while he was clinging to the Cross he cried out my God my God why hast Thou forsaken me if you skip down just a little bit further to verse uh verses number seven and 8 it says all they that see me laugh me to scorn they shoot out the lip they shake their heads saying he trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him let him deliver him seeing he delighted in him this is what is is recorded in the New Testament in the gospels at Calvary and the people stood beholding and the rulers also with him derided him saying he saved others let him save himself if he be Christ The Chosen of God and they the soldiers then they they dipped something and they wanted to offer him some vinegar yet he refused verse number 15 says my strength is dried up like a pot shirt and my tongue cleaveth to my jaw and thou Hast brought me into the dust of death again another another statement fulfilled at Calvary another statement fulfilled at the cross where Jesus cries out I thirst he says this right before he cries out three prophetic words it is finished look at verse number 17 of chapter 22 I may tell all my bones they look and stare upon me John recorded that not one bone of Jesus was broken verse number 18 says they part my garments among them and they cast lots upon my vesture again this is fulfilled at Calvary and that's just the first half of this chapter in Psalm this is just the first half of what we see take place someone thousand years into the future and we can see here tonight just with this one chapter and there's so many more that this is a validation that the Bible is true that the prophecies concerning Jesus Christ were fulfilled perfectly in his life and his death and his burial and his resurrection every prophecy documents the authenticity of the Bible that's what makes this chapter so amazing written 1,000 years before the coming of Christ this Psalm reads like a firsthand witness of somebody sitting or standing at the foot of the cross here are the words spoken by Christ and even here a thousand years earlier there had never been a crucifixion no there was no such thing as a crucifixion in the days of David there was no Rome there was no Roman crucifixion and yet even though we can't really necessarily find something in David's life to this uh dramatic type of situation yet he cries out my God my God why hast Thou forsaken me but then he makes a statement that we read earlier but I am a worm and no man that scripture stood out to me about two years ago I've been trying to compile all of my chicken scratches of hen written notes from notebooks and trying to get them all in one place and I found this this scripture a few few weeks ago I thought ah why did I write that down there's something to that I can't remember what it was so let me now go and study it a little more because that phrase I am a worm seems so scandalous that if Jesus would have cried out from this chapter he no doubt would have known this part as well I am a worm now I remember the first time the only time my dad took me fishing I thought his tackle back box was really cool the Bobbers the hooks the weights the string fascinated me don't get me started on that fishing rod thing we loaded up his blue Chevy S10 truck and headed to Lake row I probably wasn't more than eight or nine years old mom could probably remember but he said we had to make a pit stop and pick up some nightcrawlers I had never heard that phrase before in my entire life and being just a boy I was just a little intimidated intrigued but intimidated but also being a boy I was also a little hesitant to ask him what in the world's a Nightcrawler and why are we going to get them so I just went along thinking yeah we got to get these nightcrawlers but in the back of my mind I was scared to death what is it what does it do and why or what does it have to do with fishing I'll never forget we pulled into this uh this decrepit white building off the exit it was surrounded by large and small boats we got out of the truck and walked in I remember I remember vividly my dad walking to a refrigerator door with a clear glass door and he pulled out a styrofoam cup with the top on it and then he opened it and showed me the Nightcrawler I about lost my brown sugar cinnamon poptart and I'm still confused what are we going to do with the nightcrawlers I remember them squirming around in that thick brown soil that they were in we got back in the truck and I sat a little bit closer to the door I stared at that cup the entire time afraid like it was going to bust open like a Steven King novel of some sort and the nightcrawlers would come out and make their way to my pockets and into my shirt and I was scared to death again I didn't want to ask any questions I just thought okay we're going to go fishing and then we went to the bank of the little part of the lake that we went to and he got the nightcrawlers and it got a hook and then Revelation hit me he took the Nightcrawler and began to wrap it around the hook and then he stuck it right into the worm blood slimy guts came out and then he looked at me like it's your turn again I felt my Kellogg's Pop-Tarts begin to move within my stomach and I realized I am not a fisherman I am a city boy I will get my fish at a place called chesapeakes I will get my fish at Long John Silvers and I will get it at C and D's if you like fishing that's fine but you can keep your worms and you can keep your slimy fish I'll just eat it when you get done with it I'm a man's man you know I am a worm and no man that Christ would identify himself with a worm Warren weby one of my favorite Bible commentators says this is one of the forgotten I am statements of Jesus Jesus said I am the bread Jesus said I am the way the life the truth I'm I'm the way I am the door and Mr weby says this is a forgotten I am statement of Jesus I am a worm if anyone is a worm it's me if anyone could identify thems as a worm it's us sinners as we heard about today I thought of this one of my favorite hymns one of my favorite hymns of all time he would sing this out of Pentecostal Praises I remember singing this we uh we know it as at the cross but Isaac Walts called it first alas Did My Savior Bleed the first verse of this song says Alas and Did My Savior Bleed and did my sovereign die would he devote that sacred head for such a worm as I you think I never heard that song before in my life maybe you know it like this at the cross at the cross where I first saw the light and the burden of my heart rolled away it was there by faith I receive my sight and now I am happy all the day y'all remember that one y'all remember that one at the cross at the cross where I first saw the light and the burdens of my heart rolled away it was there by faith I received my sight and now I am happy all the day I wonder if somebody remembers those old books those old himels remember singing those songs can you sing it with me at the cross at the cross where I first saw the light and the burdens of my heart rolled away it was there by faith I receive my sight and now I am happy all the day I wish somebody lift up their hands one more time and say at the cross at the cross where I first come on do you remember it and the burdens of my heart rolled away it was there by faith I receive my sight and now I am happy all the day I wonder if somebody could give him some praise if you're thankful for the cross today that he saved such a worm such a wretch as I come on is anybody thankful for the cross today is anybody thankful for the light that that that that shine Into Darkness of your heart of sin sin and he took the burden of addiction and he took the burden of adultery and he took the burden of all kinds of alcoholism he took the burden of your sin at Calvary a worm a worm a worm job said that he called himself that in job 25 and6 how much less man that is a worm and the son of man which is a worm someone say worm wor that's not a pleasant worshipful word is it it's so degrading to think to call somebody a worm but yet Our Savior would say I am a worm and I began to look at this and I thought that's an interesting way to say something and I I looked at that word worm in the Hebrew and the word worm in the Hebrew is toah t o l a transliterated into English TOA and Scholars associate this word worm TOA with a crimson worm that in ancient times was crushed to produce Crimson blood that they would use in dye or they would use on fabric are you hearing what I'm saying the Hebrew word hear me now H this is amazing to me that the same Hebrew word for worm in Psalm 22 and six is the same Hebrew word Found Used throughout the rest of the Old Testament for the word scarlet or Crimson the very same word that is used to describe the Scarlet that would be used on the door door of the Tabernacle the same Hebrew word used for scarlet and Crimson used for the tin curtains of the Tabernacle is the same Hebrew word for worm because they would crush that worm and get the blood out of it so they could use it to dye something I was I was fired up when I read that I couldn't believe it I couldn't believe my eyes when I began to realize that our savior was upon a cross and he might say my God my God why hast Thou forsaken me I am a worm and not a man because he had to be crushed like the TOA worm had to be crushed Bible commentator John Corson wrote the to worm would reproduce listen to me now this is amazing that he this this worm would reproduce by by fastening itself to the limb of a tree dying in the process of bearing its Young The Young would then feed on the body of the worm leaving a small Scarlet spot on the limb of the tree so when our savior was when he was dangling from that tree at Calvary he said I'm a worm because they got to crush me he was bruised for our iniquity come on he was Forsaken and smitten of God he was a worm and he was attached to the calvary's tree so we Jesus would say this unless you eat my flesh and you drink my blood you have no part in me so we come and we partake of the [Music] worm they crush it to get every ounce of scarlet Crimson out of of the worm the ministry of the worm it's the same Hebrew word this worm this this Hebrew word for worm is found in Isaiah 1 and18 come now and let us reason together sayeth the Lord though your sins be as Scarlet they shall be as white as snow and here it comes though your sins they be read like toah like the worm like crimson they shall be as wool I've come to tell somebody today if you're guilty of your sin if you've come under here under the burden and the weight of your sin I've got good news for you today let me tell you about the ministry of the worm let me tell you about he who was crushed let me tell you about him who died for our sins it's the same oh the worm died for the worm the worm died for The Wretched sinner that I was why do you guys preach about Calvary now a few years ago and I'm drawing to close if you mus want to come a few years ago I had hair and I was dating this beautiful girl in Knoxville by the name of Ashley and I had just a little bit of hair and that was a stretch but there was a barber shop at the corner of Murray and Clinton Highway and there was a man who cut hair in there by the name of John and I didn't have much hair but I really didn't like I didn't shave my head like I do now and so I need to find somebody who could shave my head for me that that make sense and I'd go into John he's like man this is the easiest 20 bucks I'll make all week takes all of five minutes but I went in there and I found out John was hungry for something and so I'd go back I really didn't need a haircut and I think he realized that but I had started to build a relationship with John he'd say what are you doing here said I'm here preaching for fac Knoxville he said oh the big church over on Pleasant Ridge Road with the school I said that's me that's us he said oh okay he said you know I i' I'd go to church some if they just didn't preach about blood all the time all that blood talk gives me the heebies all of that blood talk kind of just grosses me out just a little bit I don't understand why they got to talk about blood all the time let me tell you something we never need to get tired of hearing about the blood we don't ever need to get tired of hearing about The Old Rugged Cross we don't ever need to get tired about how he died in our place come on somebody let us not forget about the cross that's what we're here for we're not here for a club we're here for the cross we're not here for social socializing we're here for salvation and I wonder if somebody would J jump to their feet and give him some praise and thank him for Calvary thank him for the blood we don't just need to hear about it at Easter we don't just need to hear about at communion service it's the blood that still saves it's the blood that still heals would you stand to your feet all over this Auditorium the ministry of the worm a few months ago I came ac across an article I saved it title of the article was it still bleeds that caught my attention so I clicked on it began to read at just after 8:00 in the morning on December 17th 1941 a Japanese bomb pierced her forward her ammunition magazines and bombs the violent explosion that followed lifted the bow of the Arizona out of the water the front part of the ship was utterly destroyed and 1,177 members of her crew were killed during the 1941 attack at Pearl Harbor all eight American battleships in the harbor were hit spilling thousands of gallons of oil into the ocean the USS Arizona had just been topped off the day before and the subsequent fire burned for two days after the attack this is what I found interesting that today the USS Arizona still leaks or as this riter said still bleeds today it bleeds two to nine quarts of oil every day and there is no plan to stop it we have something far more precious than oil that's still bleeding today I want you to know right here right now that there is blood flowing into this place you can't see it but it is by the spirit and it is through the word of God that if you have any sin in your life the blood still bleeds today come on I want you to realize that there was a sacrifice for you and there was a sacrifice for me we couldn't do it for ourselves we couldn't pay for it we couldn't purchase it but I want you to know that Jesus Christ has come to save Sinners of whom I am [Music] chief it's the blood of Jesus [Music] Christ I read another article about the US Arizona the environmentalists are trying to find a way to stop the leakage but there are too many people saying we are afraid that if you try to to those who are still in the boat I want you to know I'm still in the boat once you get in Christ you don't just need salvation on the first day you don't just need the blood of Jesus on your second day you need Jesus Christ every day of your life come on you're never going to outgrow his blood you're never going to outrun his blood you're never going to outs send his blood there's nothing too bad there's no one too bad for the blood I wonder if somebody would lift up their hands right now as they began to play I wonder if somebody would leave the confines of their Pew and they would run to Calvary today and say Lord my sins are as Scarlet I'm a worm but I'm coming to the ministry of the word for you are crushed for us so we could be covered so we can be cleansed so we can be made new would you lift up your heart come on would you lift up your voice oh yes the blood of oh [Applause] yes come on would you lift up your voice and sing it oh yes the of Jes somebody worship him for his blood oh of Jes Oh The Blood of [Music] Jes come on would you lift up your hands and sing it oh the of Jesus oh oh the BL of Jes the of [Applause] [Music] jesuses I heard somebody say one time and they were they were well-intentioned but they were saying you know we need to watch how we phrase things in the church because there are people who don't understand our our lingo our vocabul L and we might we might want to be careful about saying being washed in the blood I know what they're trying to say but I'm going to tell you something we don't ever need to get shy about the blood of Jesus we don't ever have to get be afraid or embarrassed about his shed blood I want you to know if you've yet to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ we'll baptize you here here right now here's water what doth hinder Thee I wonder if somebody who is thankful that you are washed in the blood can you can you lift up your voice one more time in worship as one choir come on lift up your voice and say oh the blood the of Jesus Oh The Blood the blood of Jes I'm singing oh the of [Music] Jes one more time one more time can you lift up your voice and say oh of Jes Oh The Blood the blood of Jesus [Music]
