Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
The Return of the King
- The preacher reads from 2 Samuel 19, moving through the chapter to the people who met David on his return.
- After Absalom's revolt, David crosses back over Jordan to take up his throne again in Jerusalem.
- The sermon sets David's return beside the return of Jesus Christ, the greater King.
- Forgiveness runs through the chapter: the returning king pardons people who wronged him.
Scriptures: 2 Samuel 19:15-16, 24, 31, 39
Judah, the Praisers
- The men of Judah come down to Gilgal to escort the king back across the river.
- Judah is the tribe of praise, and the praisers are the first to the king's side when he returns.
- The King is looking for a people who will praise him when he comes.
- Praise positions a people close to the King at his appearing.
Shimei, the Forgiven
- He had cursed David and thrown stones at him as David fled from Jerusalem.
- David refused to let his men kill him for it, leaving the cursing in God's hands.
- On the return, he comes down to meet the king and confesses his sin.
- The king forgives the man who cursed him; no one has wronged the King too much to be forgiven.
Scriptures: 2 Samuel 16:7-8
Mephibosheth, the Wounded
- Mephibosheth, lame in both feet, had not dressed his feet or trimmed his beard since the day the king departed.
- His servant Zeba had slandered him to David, and his land had been given away.
- He tells the king he was deceived, and leaves himself in the king's hands.
- The wounded and the slandered still come out to meet the King, who sees what others misread.
Barzillai, the Faithful
- Barzillai, a very aged man of 80 years, had provided for the king while David was away.
- The king invites him to cross over Jordan and live with him in Jerusalem.
- Barzillai declines the comfort of the court, asking to die in his own city near the grave of his father and mother.
- Faithfulness is serving the King to the end rather than spending the last days in ease.
See Your King
- The angels told the watching disciples that Jesus would return in the same way they saw him go.
- The sermon closes with an altar appeal: the King is coming, and the question is whether we are ready.
- Forgiveness is offered now, before the return, to anyone who will come and meet the King.

it like you've not done it yet come on clap now the Bible says a shout unto God with a voice of Triumph is there any are there any conquerors in the house are there any Victors in the house tonight I lift up your voice if you're a Victor in the house hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah turns to somebody and tell them the king is coming back and you could be seated King is coming back I've been in a uh David phase I've been in the David phase in my Bible reading and I just think the story of David is just so amazing of course we know the story of Dave we know the at least the first few chapters of his story we know his calling we know the story of David and Goliath we know about his adventures running from King Saul we kind of over look second Samuel and we jump into First Kings we talk about Solomon and Elijah and Elisha but the reign of David is very important his reign as king over God's people is very important he he touched lives as a king he touched lives and impacted them and there were moments that he just the acquaintances that he made that they get overlooked because they're not Mighty battles they're not Giants falling but it's a moment where a man as a king brings influence to the life of people of course David is in figure and type a picture of Jesus Christ he is a foreshadow that Jesus would be king the promise in second Samuel I believe chapter number seven where we find the davidic Covenant that David's Sons would forever sit upon the throne of David through this family heritage they would reign as a people and so Jesus Christ who comes through the line of David he shows us in picture of how David influenced people as a king how Christ influenced people and the reign of David is just a foreshadowing of the reign of Jesus Christ and this little story we find here is very important it's overlooked maybe you've never read this part of his story before but David had been King for quite some time over all of Israel had the situation with Bathsheba and Uriah had the situation with his son amnon in Absalom it's after all of that it's after all of that that we find this story Absalom had chased his father David away from the kingdom chased him away and presented Anarchy to the people of Israel and after this awful event we see David coming back he comes back to a people to Reign he is their anointed king he's coming back to rule over his people and as he comes back he's met with individuals and people who he had come into contact with and as I read this this past week I was just floored again as I read it because we see in his return in the New Testament the return of Jesus Christ he is the rightful King over the Earth he is the anointed king of kings and the Lord of lords and even like the story of David and Absalom David was the true king but his son the prince ruled for a short time and the Bible calls Satan the devil Lucifer he they call him the prince of the power of the air and though he's ruling just for a short moment I want you to know and there might be people following after the prince of the power of the air they might be following after dark Forces in evil I want you to know there is a king coming I want you to know there is a king that will return he is going to return and he is going to rule as king of kings and Lord of lords come on I'm telling you right now he is coming back Jesus said let not your heart be troubled in days like this in 2022 don't let your heart be troubled ye believe in God believe also in me in my father's house are many mansions if it were not so I would have told you I go to prepare a place for you and if I go and prepare a place for you I will come again I'll come again and I'm coming to receive you unto myself I'm telling you the king is going to return come on let's not get so comfortable down here on Earth that we forget we got a king who is going to come back to get us and we're going to rule with him come on in Acts 1 Jesus ascends into heaven and an angel said you men of Galilee Washington ye hear gazing up into heaven this same Jesus which is taken up from you into heaven shall so come in like manner as you've seen him go into heaven can I tell you he is coming back he is coming back in a moment when is he coming back preacher you've been saying that for 2 000 years the church has been saying he's going to come back and I tell you can I just tell you this we're 2 000 years closer we were close we're closer now than the apostles were then think about that when is he going to come in a moment what moment in a moment which moment in a moment in the twinkling of an eye at the last Trump for the trumpet shall sound and the dead shall be raised Incorruptible and we shall be changed can I tell you Brothers and Sisters in Christ the King is going to come back he might not come back for another 2 000 years or he might come back in 2000 minutes I'm telling you he is coming back and if you believe that and if you're ready I wish you would clap your hands I wish you would lift up your voice come on is anybody ready is anybody ready is anybody ready to go and to meet him in the air is anybody ready to go see a loved ones who've gone on before you is anybody ready to go and worship him and get rid of this whole corruptible body get rid of this sickness the king will return he will return can I tell you he's coming back for a people who are ready for him he's coming back for a people who are ready for them there are going to be those who will meet him they're ready they're living their lives in preparation for the king's return and when we see this in second Samuel 19. we get a picture again it's a foreshadowing of what the return of Jesus is going to look like because there are four people four groups of people here in our text that met King David when he returned he was gone for a short time and as he came back there were people ready for him there are people ready for him to sit on his throne Forever My Lord have mercy peoples whose lives had been touched by the king Lives who have been impacted by David his leadership and his love David was a great king probably the greatest Earthly King so that shows us something here in these people that as he returned to come back to rule over all of Israel there met him four types of people I want to show you this evening the first people look at verse number 15. so the king returned and came to Jordan and Judah came to gilgal to meet the king the first people to meet King David when he returned was Judah it was David's peace have mercy it was the tribe he came from and before listen before you read a few verses before this he had the priests go and prepare them he had zadok the priests go and tell them hey your King's coming and so Judah showed up first Judah brothers and sisters and I know where I'm in a Pentecostal church and you've heard this one million and one times Judah means praise the first people who met King David when he returned was a praising people can I tell you when the King of Kings and the Lord of Lord returns he's going to be met with some people with the praise on their lip and a worship in their heart come on you know what we gotta be we gotta be praisers we got to be people who are ready for his return people who are ready to lift him up and to glorify him you know what we're doing here right now we're preparing ourselves for what we will do over there [Applause] come on that's why we're just exercising we're just practicing what we're going to do for all of eternity that's why it doesn't matter what song it is it doesn't matter the tempo it is all that matters is that we've got some praisers who's going to meet the Lord come on I want him to find me praising I want him to find you I wonder if there's any Praises in the house I wonder there's any praisers in the house come on you don't need a bass drum you don't need a keyboard you don't need a praise team you're appraiser you're Judah you're saying our God shall be praised it's not based on my emotion it's not based upon how I feel he's worthy of praise [Applause] he's looking for a people who will praise him can I tell you what's in heaven praisers harpists singers Kings redeemed Israel Angels cherub can I tell you it doesn't matter who you are or what it is somebody needs to lift up their voice and praise the King somebody needs to praise the King [Applause] all right brother Knight they sing for 30 minutes that's all I've got if you can't praise for 30 minutes what are you going to do for eternity if you think it's boring to praise now what are you going to do for eternity can I tell you there's only silence for 30 Minutes in Heaven there's only silence for 30 Minutes in Heaven and some of y'all would love that but for eternity there's going to be some shouting there's going to be some praise there's gonna be we made it we made it we made it worthy worthy why are they we made it we made it how Wonder can you do it right now I wonder if you can do it right now will he find you praising when he returns that's it that's it brother Sean will he find me praising or will he find me pouting will he find you praising or will he find you pouty I want to beat him with a praise [Music] somebody should clap their hands just for a moment somebody should lift up their voice for a moment what if he came right now what if he came right now are you gonna sit there are you going to be silent or is he going to find you praising is he gonna find you I wish somebody would give him a Crazy Praise like you're there already [Applause] I don't mean to be carnal for a second but I won't be carless for a second I I like sports and stay with me I like sports and I watched a highlight it caught my attention because I knew where the two NFL teams were playing and the and the in the title of the Tweet says listen to that crowd Roar and I had to do a double take because that team that was playing and getting cheered for wasn't at home they were at the visiting team's Stadium and then the comments said can you believe that this team's fans will travel in such a horde and take over a stadium that when they are the opposing team the visiting team they will out sound the home team and I begin to listen to that and there was a roar like I had never heard before can I tell you something we better now not let fans of a sporting team out praise us they should lifted they should click on our YouTube page they should click on our Instagram social media and say can you hear that Roar of the people come on what are they praising for they're praising their King their praise and their redeemer their praising their savior their praise and their King can you hear the Roar [Applause] praisers met him they set the atmosphere the first ones to meet the king to come back were praisers God have mercy second person to meet him was a man by the name of shemiah if you don't know who shimmy I is go back just two chapters that's how short of a time between we are introduced to shimmy eye to this moment that he's the second person to meet King David shimiah can I just tell you about shimiah in chapter 16 we meet shemiah David is fleeing from Jerusalem he's fleeing with his Entourage and guess who meets him as he leaves shimiah shimmy eye comes out and curses David verse 6 says he cast stones at David not just at David but the followers of David and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand on his left and shemiah is cursing the king and he says this come out come out you bloody man come out thou son of Belial the Lord hath returned upon thee all the blood of the House of Saul curses him throws stones at him and David's men says can I kill him can I take his head off his shoulders and you know what David said no no because there might be a change in him one of these days cursing me now for the Holy Ghost he's cursing my followers now he's my enemy now but he might just have a change of heart before I return my God have mercy you have to understand shimmy I was of the House of Saul he was a family member of Saul he didn't see David as king he didn't see David's family as ruling he didn't like change and so when David left the kingdom because of Absalom he found his moment to tweet and comment throw stones you know about those preachers you know about those Christians you know about keyboard Warriors you know wouldn't have the guts to say that to your face you know but they got guts in their two little fingers they're saying a bunch of Hypocrites and reprobate you're getting what you deserve and all that and you know what we'd like to do retaliate but you never know when there might be a change of heart you never know in your spirit when you keep control of your spirit which is better than having control over all of a city is that they might have a change of heart one of these days and shimiah wants to say you bloody man you bloody man in all your bloody followers Emmys you're my enemies I can't stand you I can't stand your self-righteousness I can't stand all of your Holiness I can't stand all of your truth loving I'm gonna curse you but from Samuel 16. to 19. there's a change you know what shimmy I represents those who are forgiven hi brother I'm not so sure he really means it oh yeah Paul Paul says that while we were yet enemies with God while we were at War and cursing him and throwing stones and accusations at him and cursing all of his followers in the church he loved us and yet Godly sorrow Works unto repentance you know what we our problem is I didn't see him cry I didn't see him repent [Music] it's not up to you this ain't a show up here because at some point shimmy I had a change of heart there was a turnaround that took place and when there was Judah praising Here Come Oh shimmy I said hey King I'm so sorry will you have mercy upon me will you have will you have some Grace with me I was wrong and I tell you there's some people in this room who are once enemies of God I was one of them but can I tell you a change took place [Music] and when I deserve death he gave me Grace don't kill him there might be a time when he meets oh yeah oh yeah don't give up on me yet don't throw the towel in on me yet I might have a turnaround [Applause] come on come on there's time for you to get things right God can turn your curse into a blessing those who once curse God will be the ones who will welcome him when he returns he represents those who have failed but who have been given another chance should we kill him should we kill him should we kill him do you know what they posted let's just go ahead and kill him you know what they said let's just go ahead and kill him and David or better yet Jesus says let's show him a little bit of Grace because there might be a day where Jeremy was once a cursor of God who cursed God and his followers but there's a time there might be a turnaround just overnight just two chapters over where he had he experiences a turnaround and now he's the one up here saying come on come on King remember me all right I cursed you but now I want to bless you if you're wondering if God is looking for Perfect People he's not looking for Perfect People he's looking for forgiven people [Applause] do we still believe that do we still believe that he's looking for a forgiven people that even though that we curse God he can forgive us someone say Amen third person going fast third person Judah praisers shimmy I forgiven and here comes crawling dragging himself mephibosheth if you don't remember the story of mephibosheth it's one of my favorite stories in second Samuel you see mephibosheth was the son of Jonathan the grandson of Saul Jesus help me right now and when Saul and Jonathan died in battle word came to the house of Saul and mephibosheth was just a little boy and his nurse in a haste dropped him and he became lame on his legs and David when he became king you heard me preach this last week when David became king he said is there anyone left in the house of Saul Saul who wanted to kill me Saul who wanted to kill my family Saul who under ruined my life Saul is there anyone in the house of my enemy Saul that I can show kindness to not Revenge not retaliation kindness and Zeba mephibosheth's servant says oh yeah Jonathan's son who's lame on his leg that's what he says let me call him by his name he calls him by his condition you know the king will not call you by your condition he'll call you by your name he said I don't I didn't ask about his condition I want to know if he's breathing some of us might not be in the best of shape when the king returns but he didn't ask about your condition he wants to know are you still okay are you still living mephibosheth represents those who have been wounded mephibosheth was wounded by somebody else it wasn't his fault there are people in this room who have been hurt they have been crippled they have been maimed by others but there's hope for you that kindness oh God that when David said I want to show a little kindness He restored him to his he gave him everything that he deserved he gave him everything that he said he's going to sit at my table here but when David left and he came back here comes on mephibosheth dragging himself through the dirt saying I'm gonna go meet my king who showed me some grace even though I was broken even though I was wounded you don't have to get there in perfect condition you just gotta get there [Applause] you've been mishandled you've been broken you've been wounded things that have happened in your life and he may not have ever healed you of those things but I want you to know you can drag yourself to the second coming of the king of kings and say I made it [Applause] come on is there anybody who's ever gone through some things in their life you've gone through some sickness you've gone through some travel truth but do some travesty you've gone through some disappointments and you're broken and you're crippled and you're lame but I want you to know if you can just keep yourself near the king [Applause] oh hey Lord here I am still broken but still worshiping here I am still wounded but still worshiping here I am I've gone through a divorce I've gone through a bankruptcy I've gone through cancer I've gone through all kinds of trouble but Lord I'll drag myself in I'll drag myself out but I'll be here I'll be here I'll worship you and I'll meet you when you return [Applause] come on praise team I got one left I got one left praise team let's go ahead the last one to meet David as he returned was an elderly man by the name of Brasilia I preached a sermon many many years ago about barzillai Bishop reminds me of it every once in a while Brasilia was an 80 year old man and when David left shimmy I met him with curses but barzillai was a wealthy man and he provided for David Judah praised Absalom for a little while shimmy I cursed mephibosheth wallowed in his wounds but Brasilia stayed faithful Brazilian I Was 80 years old he had seen some stuff he's seen fads come and go he's seen Saul become king he saw Saul do great exploits he saw Saul rebel against God he experienced the anointing of David and him killing Goliath the victories he brought the Pomp and the circumstance he brought to Judah and Israel Brazilian I've seen some things he seen Absalom try to overtake David but Brasilia I said I know who my king is it's David and so when David is on his way out barzillai meets him as an old man and brings him food and brings him blankets provides for him sustenance takes care of the king things aren't going well are you here almost done don't want to lose you things aren't going well but Brasilia stayed faithful you know the church goes through some UPS and some Downs but there's some seasoned Saints who've gone through the fads and seeing things come and seeing things go but they know who their King is while everybody else is leaving and going in another Direction I'm sticking with the King he may not be popular right now my God have mercy it may not be in style right now but I'm sticking with David I'm sticking with the king oh my God so here comes Judah praising Here Comes shimmy eye forgiven Here Comes mephibosheth wounded But Here Comes Brasilia faithful I'm old David I've been waiting you've always been my kingstand your feet you've always been my king and I'm here to take you on over to the Jordan you know some might overlook brasiliai say I he's just too old in Brazilia I even thought that about himself he thought he was too old I said I I'm I'm not I'm not capable to go over with you send shim ham over with you because he prefers listen to me now he prefers the Next Generation before his own I'm thankful for some self sacrificing seeing your Saints who say I'll be here if it's project 180 Code Orange Christmas service Easter Service Labor Day service I don't care what service it is he's my king and I'm going to be there I've seen stuff come I've seen stuff go but I'm gonna be here I'm thankful for some Elders I'm thankful for some seasoned Saints who show us what it means to remain faithful until the return of the king can I tell you something tonight the king is coming the king is coming come on praise team he's are you ready are you ready I know we don't
