Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

Bethany: worship in the house of affliction

  • Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where they made him a supper: Martha served, Lazarus — whom he had raised from the dead — sat at the table, and Mary took a pound of costly ointment of spikenard, anointed his feet, and wiped them with her hair until the house was filled with the odor.
  • Bethany means house of misery or house of affliction, a place of need near Jerusalem where the sick and outcasts found care; Jesus lodged among the hurting there in his final days rather than in the powerful city.
  • In the town known for affliction, Jesus reversed affliction: where people expected sorrow he produced joy, and where they expected death he produced life — he is not turned off by our affliction, and he can turn a mess into a message.
  • Judas objected that the ointment could have been sold for three hundred pence and given to the poor, but John says he cared not for the poor — he was a thief who carried the bag; Jesus answered, let her alone: the poor you have always with you, but me you have not always.

Scriptures: John 12:1-8

Worship fuels service

  • Earlier, in the sisters' home, Martha worked and served while Mary sat at the feet of Jesus listening; when Martha asked him to rebuke her sister, Jesus answered that one thing is needful and Mary had chosen the good part.
  • Service and worship are not enemies but two sides of the same coin: Martha served because she loved Jesus, and Mary worshiped because she loved Jesus — but worship must come first, because without a heart of worship, service becomes duty, routine, and drudgery.
  • Sometimes it is good for a person to come out from behind the instrument, the camera, or the screen and simply worship: Jesus wants our presence just as much as our performance.
  • Judas knew how much the perfume was worth but not how much Jesus was worth — he sold him for thirty pieces of silver, far less than a year's wages; a low view of Jesus always shows up as compromise in worship.
  • Be careful mocking somebody else's worship: those who have been forgiven much love much and worship much, and great worship comes out of great affliction — you do not know what he brought them from.

Scriptures: Luke 10:42

Pour it out: worship that costs

  • Pure spikenard came from far away at a high price — about three hundred denarii, nearly a year's wages — and such oil was saved for the most sacred moments of a family's life; Mary did not drizzle a few drops, she broke the sealed alabaster flask and poured it all out, with no turning back.
  • The fragrance of her offering would cling to him as he walked into Jerusalem, as the soldiers handled him, and as he prayed in Gethsemane: what she poured out in a private house followed him to a public cross.
  • Do not save your best worship for camp meeting, youth convention, or another day: anybody can praise, but worship costs something — and he is worthy of our worship right now.
  • Worship goes beyond a service: it is presenting your whole life — heart, mind, and body — as a living sacrifice, which is our reasonable worship; what the world calls waste, heaven calls worship.
  • Jesus said that wherever the gospel is preached throughout the whole world, what Mary did would be spoken of as a memorial of her: be remembered as a worshipper, and show your children by your own example what we do in the house of the Lord.
  • The recording ends abruptly during the hand-off that follows the sermon, so the close of the service is not captured.

Remain standing. Get your Bibles. We're going to go to John chapter number 12. Amen. Tremendous day. A tremendous day today to see what we experience today with the baptism and to see Jesus continuing to change lives. No matter the age or the situation, God is still moving and changing lives in a tremendous, tremendous word. I don't want to be apostolicish. I want to be apostolic. Amen. Does anybody want to be apostolic? Amen. And I want to be like the apostles following after Jesus. A tremendous word from our pastor today. I'm so glad to have guests with us tonight. We have so many that's been with us today and tonight. I'm glad to have apostolic royalty among us tonight. We are so glad to have Sam Bingham here with us. She is the granddaughter of my bishop, Bishop ML Walls. And uh and also the bishop of brother Bingham, Bishop Bingham. And and we are so glad to have her here. We're so glad to have Landon here tonight. Could we welcome them? We're so glad that they are here with us tonight. God bless you. John chapter number 12, begin reading in verse number one. John 12, beginning at verse number one. And then Jesus 6 days before the Passover came to Bethany where Lazarus where Lazarus was which had been dead whom he raised from the dead. There they made him a supper and Martha served. But Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him. Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly. Someone say costly. and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair, and the house was filled with the odor of the ointment. Then saith one of his disciples, Judas, a Scariot, Simon's son, which should betray him. Why was not this ointment sold for 300 pence and given to the poor? This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bear what was put therein. Then said Jesus, "Let her alone. Against the day of my bearing hath she kept this, for the poor always ye have with you, but me you have not always." I'm not going to preach long tonight, but I want to preach with this thought in mind. One man's waist is another man's worship. One man's waist is another man's worship. Would you put your Bibles or your tablets down and would you lift up your hands? Let's invite the presence of Jesus into this moment of preaching. Father, we're so thankful for your spirit that's been here since the very moment we walked in today. the miracle that we seen, the baptism, the things that you've been doing, the answered prayers, the ministry of the word we heard today. And I pray again, Lord, that your spirit would help the word of God go forth and find good ground in the hearts of your people. Lord, we need your help because I'm frail and I am weak. And I pray Lord that despite my inabilities and my and my weakness God that you would be found strong and you would begin to move and minister to us tonight where we are needed in Jesus name we pray. And everyone said amen. Now clap your hands to Jesus. I think we can give him something a little bit better than that. I think we can give him just a little bit something better than that tonight cuz he's worthy. He's worthy. He's worthy. He's worthy. You can be seated. One man's waste is another man's worship. Bethany was a small village on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives about two miles away from Jerusalem. This is interesting that I I was looking up this word or this name Bethany and it means there's several there's several ways it's been translated and this was one or two that I found very interesting that Bethany means house of misery or house of affliction. Many scholars believe Bethany served as a place where the sick, the needy or the outcasts could receive care. Some ancient writings suggest that a type of hospice or care facility operated in or near Bethany where those with chronic illnesses received help. It sat close to Jerusalem for pilgrims to lodge there during feast days. Yet far enough away that the healthy population of Jerusalem didn't feel threatened by the afflicted. In short, Bethany was not a place of prominence. It was a place of need. And Bethany became a place of refuge for Jesus during his final days. He he didn't lodge in the powerful city of Jerusalem. He stayed among the hurting in Bethany. And if you remember this story, chapter number 12 follows chapter number 11 of John where we meet three of Jesus's closest friends, Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. In this humble town, Jesus performed one of his greatest miracles when he called Lazarus from the tomb. Now, Bethany wasn't known for scholars or rulers. It was known for need and hospitality. And here in the house of affliction or the house of misery, Jesus spent his last nights living or staying amongst those who are in need of his presence. Now, this account is told in all of the gospels. Mark tells us this meal took place in the house of Simon the leper. That title reveals his past condition and why he may have lived in Bethany, the house of affliction. If the Old Testament customs were for leprosy were still in effect, a leper couldn't remain in the community. Therefore, he lived outside of Jerusalem. He couldn't host guests or share a meal with those in the city. So, this tells us that Simon the leper was now Simon the healed because we find Jesus and his disciples Mary, Martha, and Lazarus having a meal, fellowship with Jesus here at Simon the leper's house. John tells us that Lazarus sat at the table. Martha served the food. And while they ate, Mary entered the room with an alabaster container. Every gospel writer highlights a part of the picture. Mark shows the setting, Matthew shows the disciples, and John shows the family. Together, they reveal a healed man hosting the healer, a resurrected man enjoying fellowship, and a worshipper preparing to offer a costly gift. And so with this in mind, we can see why Bethany carried the reputation of the house of affliction. The sick and needy found shelter there in a place associated with weakness and suffering. Jesus displayed his authority over death when he raised g raised Lazarus from the dead. So in this town known for affliction, Jesus reversed affliction. Where people expected sorrow, Jesus produced joy. Where people expected death, he produced life. The very soil of Bethany was a testimony to what Jesus could do for the afflicted. You know what this place is here? It may not be called Bethany. It might be called First Apostolic Church, but this is a place that can testify and witness that Jesus can turn your affliction around. on. He can turn your misery INTO A TESTIMONY. HE CAN TURN YOUR HE CAN TURN YOUR MESS INTO A MESSAGE. I'M TELLING YOU, JESUS ISN'T TURNED OFF BY YOUR AFFLICTION ANYMORE. THAT HE WAS TURNED OFF BY THE DEATH OF LAZARUS. I'M COMING TO TELL SOMEBODY, HE'S COME TO GIVE YOU JOY AND LIFE AND A TEST. I WISH SOMEBODY WOULD CLAP THEIR HANDS TONIGHT. I WISH SOMEBODY WOULD GIVE JESUS SOME PRAISE BECAUSE HE STEPPED INTO YOUR AFFLICTION. With this in mind, this setting we've got before us, Mary enters the room with this alabaster container. And what she does next fits everything we already know about her. Earlier in Luke chapter number 10, we see a moment in their home where Martha, her sister, is working, preparing, cleaning, cooking, and Mary sits at the feet of Jesus listening. And like some sisters, I've got a couple of them, Martha becomes frustrated. She asked Jesus to rebuke Mary and tell her to get up and help. BUT JESUS GENTLY CORRECTS MARTHA. He says, "One thing is needful and Mary has chosen the good part." In other words, Martha served and Mary worshiped. But Jesus didn't rebuke Martha for her service. He simply revealed that worship must come first. Can I tell you this tonight? Service and worship aren't enemies. Worship and service are not enemies. Don't forget we call this church service. >> We can we can we can change that word and call it church worship. But service and worship are two sides of the same coin. Worship and service go together. Martha served because she LOVED JESUS. MARY STOPPED in worship because she loved Jesus. But Jesus shows us the proper sequence. WORSHIP ALWAYS FUELS SERVICE. WITHOUT WORSHIP, SERVICE becomes duty. It becomes routine. It becomes drudgery. BECAUSE WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE A HEART OF WORSHIP, it simply becomes work. I'M TELLING YOU, IF YOU WILL LEARN how to worship, your service will overflow with worship to Jesus as you perform it. We must serve, but we must also work. We have those who would rather work than worship. And we have some who would rather worship than work. You got to have both. And let me just stop and pastor for a few moments. Every once in a while, IT'S GOOD FOR SOME OF US not to do something in a church service. It might be good for you to come out from behind the instrument or the camera or the screen and come in here and worship. Because if all we DO IS SEE YOU SERVE and we NEVER SEE YOU WORSHIP, I'M GOING TO START WORRYING THAT YOU DON'T KNOW HOW to worship. Come on, somebody. Y'all still there? Y'all all right? I'M TELLING YOU, WE GOT TO SERVE. SERVICE IS IS GOOD, BUT WE ALSO MUST MAKE SURE THAT OUR SERVICE COMES FROM A PLACE OF WORSHIP BECAUSE IF IT DOESN'T, IT BECOMES WORK. THEY CAN'T DO IT WITHOUT ME. THEN WE'LL do without. >> THEY CAN'T DO IT WITHOUT ME. THEN YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'VE DONE? You've made your position an idol. >> Better move on, brother Whitley. Worship fuels service, not the other way around. Now, you can serve and worship at the same time. Right. But Jesus says one thing is needful. Put down the dishes. MARTHA CAN COME SIT AT MY FEET. MARY HAS CHOSEN THE GOOD THING. THERE'S A TIME TO WORK AND THEN THERE'S A TIME TO WORSHIP. >> There's a time to work and there is A TIME TO WORSHIP. WE MUST UNDERSTAND THAT JESUS WANTS OUR PRESENCE JUST AS MUCH AS HE WANTS OUR PERFORMANCE. >> I'm starting to feel him help me around here. I'M TELLING YOU, HE WANTS OUR PRESENCE JUST AS MUCH AS HE WANTS OUR PERFORMANCE. YES, WE CAN SING and yes, we can play and yes, WE CAN SERVE. BUT CAN YOU GET IN HIS PRESENCE AND SIMPLY SIT THERE AND LISTEN AND LOVE ON HIM AND WORSHIP YOU? I WONDER IF SOMEBODY CAN DO THAT RIGHT NOW AND SAY, "LORD, I'M HERE TO WORSHIP YOU. I'M NOT JUST HERE TO SERVE YOU, BUT I'M HERE TO WORSHIP YOU. According to John's account, the scene unfolds in simple order. Martha served the meal just like she had done earlier. Lazarus, who is now raised from the dead, is eating a meal, sitting at the table. And then here comes Mary. She took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard and began to anoint Jesus. Mark adds the detail. He says the oil was sealed inside an alabaster flask. Mary broke the flask and she emptied it on Jesus. She didn't hold one drop back and the fragrance filled the house. The fragrance Mary used was called pure spikenard. The Greek word in scripture means genuine or unadulterated. Now what's important to understand is that this oil, this perfume, this fragrance didn't come from Israel. It came from the lower slopes of the Himalayan region of India and Nepal. Traders would harvest the plant, crush the roots, and extract the oil. From there, it traveled by camel through ancient trade routes and cross deserts and oceans. To hold a pound of pure spikener in Bethany, THE HOUSE OF AFFLICTION, MEANT SOMEONE paid a high price. There's a price to worship. I'm gonna say it again. There is a price to worship. Now this type of perfume, this type of fragrance was used only in the most sacred moments of a family's life. In Jewish culture, it was common to save costly oil for marriage. A flask of spikenard could function like modern financial security. People stored their value in something precious. It could be opened for a wedding or handed down to a child. And yet TO POUR IT OUT, NOT JUST SIMPLY GIVE A LITTLE BIT, BUT TO BREAK THE VAST OR THE FLASK AND POUR IT OUT WAS UNTHINKABLE. Mary didn't drizzle a few drops. She broke the container. Not only that, the alabaster flask itself mattered. Alabaster came from soft stone quarried from Egypt. craftsman hollowed it out by hand and sealed it so that not a hint of fragrance escaped. ONCE YOU BROKE the neck of the flash, you could not receal it. Breaking the container made a statement. There was no turning back. There was no saving it for later. And then think about this. When the perfume hit his hair and his feet, the scent filled the house. It would cling to his skin and his clothing. WHEN HE WALKED INTO JERUSALEM the next day, he would still smell like Mary's offering and worship. When the soldiers handled him during the arrest, the fragrance would still be lingering. When he prayed in Gethsemane, THE SCENT OF WORSHIP would be present when he prayed like great drops of blood from his sweat. WHAT MARY POURED OUT IN A PRIVATE HOUSE WOULD FOLLOW HIM TO A PUBLIC CROSS. My God. Everywhere he went, THE FRAGRANCE of her offering was following him around. Everywhere he went from that day forward, HE WOULD SMELL LIKE WHAT MARY poured out as an offering unto him. Are y'all hearing what I'm saying? This was no small offering. The Bible SAYS THAT IT WAS ABOUT 300 daeneri. A daenerius equaled a day's wage for a laborer. So this gift represented almost an entire year of income. In today's terms, IT WOULD EQUAL THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. IT WAS SIMPLY NOT A GESTURE. It was her treasure. I'm not saving this for another day. I'm going to break it open and pour it out upon him. Now, you know what we got to understand is that we can't save our best worship for camp meeting. We can't save our best worship for Strong Tower Youth Camp. I know we got Cold Orange coming up in a couple of weeks and we got National Youth Convention after that. I'M TELLING YOU, YOU BETTER NOT WORSHIP better there than YOU DO HERE. WHY? BECAUSE HE'S WORTHY OF YOUR WORSHIP. NO MATTER WHERE YOU COME ON, SOMEBODY. COME ON, YOUNG PERSON. HEAR ME RIGHT NOW. I LOVE I LOVE NYC. I LOVE STRONG TOWER. I LOVE CODE ORANGE. BUT YOU KNOW WHAT YOU NEED TO DO IS BREAK OPEN THE BOX. BREAK OPEN THE AND SAY, "HERE'S MY WORSHIP. I'M NOT SAVING THIS FOR ANOTHER DAY. I'M NOT SAVING THIS FOR ANOTHER. I'M NOT WAITING UNTIL I'M OLD. I'M NOT WAITING UNTIL I'M MARRIED. I'M NOT WAITING UNTIL I GOT A 401K. YOU KNOW WHY? BECAUSE HE'S WORTHY NOW. HE'S WORTHY NOW. HE'S WORTHY OF MY WORSHIP RIGHT NOW. WORSHIP COST you something. Worship. Anybody can praise. Anybody can praise. You can praise anywhere and you can praise with anything. But worship cost you something. Worship cost you something. And what should have been a moment of worship turned into a moment of murmuring. Some complained about the waste. The ointment worth nearly a year's wages. Someone said it could have been sold and given to the poor. But John says it was Judas who said that. And John says that Judas really didn't care about the poor because he kept the money bag. Isn't it amazing that people will view worship to Jesus and dedication to Jesus as waste? To Judas. Mary's act was wasteful. But to Jesus, it was worship. Mary valued THE PRESENCE OF JESUS MORE THAN THE PRICE of her perfume. To her, THE OFFERING WAS NOT TOO EXTRAVAGANT FOR THE ONE WHO HAD JUST RAISED her brother from the dead. IN THAT MOMENT, SHE SHE DEMONSTRATED WHAT TRUE dedication looks like. IT'S SACRIFICE WITHOUT CALCULATION, WORSHIP WITHOUT RESERVATION, and love without limitation. But there will always BE PEOPLE WHO THINK THAT WORSHIP is waste. Don't believe me? They think prayer is a waste of time. They consider church attendance unnecessary, holiness antiquated, and giving to the kingdom a waste of resources because they see worship as impractical and sacrifice AS FOOLISH. BUT FOLLOWERS OF JESUS know better. to what the world calls waste. Heaven calls worship. >> You know you don't have to dress that way. You know you don't have to get that loud. You know you don't have to sing that way. You know you don't have to go there so often. You know you don't have to give of your tithe. You know you don't have to give your offering. YOU KNOW WHAT YOU SHOULD AND THEY ALWAYS THINK THAT THEY THEY KNOW BETTER. You know what those Christians need to be doing? given to the poor. Let's see you do it. This microphone on tonight. You know, you you know what y'all need to do with your time? Spend it with your family. And yeah, they got kids out of wedlock all over the place. Been married four and five times. THEY ALWAYS KNOW WHAT WE SHOULD BE DOING WITH our resources because to them this is waste. You know, you could be at home tonight watching football. Y Wednesday night, midweek, you know what you could be doing? Tell me doom scrolling on your phone. Y'all Y'all still Y'all still dress up for church? You know, it doesn't take all of that. y'all still get together and pray. It doesn't take He knows your heart. If he does, I'm glad he doesn't tell a whole lot of people about my heart. But you know who can't see my heart? You. I'm I'm I'm JUST GOING TO TELL YOU THIS RIGHT NOW THAT MY WORSHIP MIGHT SEEM LIKE WASTE TO YOU. MY DEDICATION MIGHT SEEM LIKE WASTE TO YOU. THIS CHURCH MIGHT SEEM LIKE A WASTE OF RESOURCES TO THE WORLD, BUT I'M TELLING YOU, HEAVEN DOESN'T SEE THIS AS WASTE. HE SEES IT AS WORSHIP. AND SO, I'M GOING TO KEEP ON WORSHIPING. I'M GOING TO KEEP ON PRAYING. COME ON. IS SOMEBODY GOING TO HELP ME TONIGHT? I'M GOING TO KEEP ON GIVING. I'M GOING TO KEEP ON PRAYING. I'M GOING TO KEEP ON F YOU MIGHT CALL IT WASTE, BUT HE CALLS IT WORSHIP. Now listen. Isn't it amazing that Judas knew how much the perfume was worth, but he didn't know how much Jesus was worth. This could have been sold for 300 daenarius and given to the poor. But yet the same MAN WHO KNEW THE COST of the perfume did not know the cost of the savior. And so he he SOLD HIM FOR 30 PIECES OF SILVER, FAR LESS THAN A YEAR'S WAGES. Let me just go ahead and just say this right now. IF YOU'LL COMPROMISE on worship, THAT MEANS YOU HAVE A VERY LOW VIEW OF WHO Jesus is. Let me show you. This is not my favorite song, so I'm not going to lift my hands on this one. Uh, who's singing that, Brother Nate? Oh gosh, I'm definitely not worshiping tonight. Oh no. Uh, it's just, is it 100 dB in here or 92 dB in here? I just can't worship this way. You see, you got a very low view of Jesus, y'all. All right. H [groaning] I can't. It's too cold in here. I can't worship. Or it's too hot. When do you worship? What is the right temperature? What is the right key? What is the RIGHT COME ON, SOMEBODY. WHEN DO YOU WORSHIP? BECAUSE IF YOU CAN'T WORSHIP IN HERE, I GOT A pretty good I GOT A PRETTY GOOD UNDERSTANDING THAT YOU PROBABLY DON'T WORSHIP AT HOME EITHER. I'M TELL AND IF YOU CAN'T WORSHIP in here with THE PEOPLE OF GOD, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO IN ETERNITY WHEN WE WE'RE NOT GOING TO SIT THERE AND BE QUIET FOR ETERNITY? I'M GOING TO BE THERE FOR FOREVER WORSHIPING HIM. I MIGHT AS WELL I'M USED TO SAY I'M JUST WARMING UP. I'M JUST WARMING UP. I'M JUST THIS IS THIS IS JUST A PREVIEW. OH, THAT'S WASTEFUL. THAT'S WASTEFUL. NO, IT'S WORSHIP. IT'S WORSHIP. LET ME JUST GO AHEAD AND just say something. Uh, it doesn't take all of that running. Those kids need to calm down. I, the pastor said today, I would rather them be up here jumping, running, clapping, singing. Uh, I don't think I could I don't do they really need to worship like that? I I just, you know, you know, he Jes Jesus might get scared off. Let me just go ahead and just pastor again for a second. You better be careful mocking somebody's worship. You better listen. You better be careful making fun of how somebody prays. Judas, you better be careful WHILE YOU SIT BACK THERE WITH YOUR ARMS FOLDED AND WE HAVEN'T SEEN YOU TALK IN TONGUES SINCE REAGAN WAS PRESIDENT. I'M JUST GOING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING. YOU BETTER BE CAREFUL HOW YOU WHY ARE YOU YOU SHOULD BE WORSHIPING IN THE FIRST PLACE. YOU SHOULD BE INSTEAD OF YOU WATCHING SOMEBODY ELSE, WHY DON'T YOU GET YOUR EYES ON THE HEELS WHERE MY HELP COMES FROM? IF YOU WOULD STOP ME, ARE YOU? YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT I'VE BEEN THROUGH. YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT I'VE GONE THROUGH. THIS IS A HOUSE OF AFFLICTION. I I'VE GOT TO PRAISE HIM THIS WAY. MY BROTHER WAS DEAD AND NOW HE'S BACK TO LIFE. I WAS SICK IN MY BODY, BUT NOW I'M HEALED. DON'T YOU JUDGE MY WORSHIP. >> COME ON. WE CAN'T GET SO INFLUENCED BY THE INTERNET AND SOCIAL MEDIA MAKING FUN OF US THAT WE START MAKING FUN OF EACH OTHER IN THE HOUSE. >> IF SOMEBODY ROLLS ON THE FLOOR, LET THEM ROLL. IF SOMEBODY DANCES A NEW JUKE, LET THEM JUKE. I'M TELLING YOU, WE GOT TO BE WORSHIPFUL. >> WE GOT TO BE WORSHIPFUL. >> Hold on. I I I remember a few years ago when Tennessee got a last second touchdown against Georgia in Athens. I WATCHED some of y'all scream and hoop and holler. I was there. And then you'll have the audacity to come in here and none of those men on THAT FOOTBALL FIELD EVER DIED FOR YOUR SINS OR HEALED YOUR BODY OR PROVIDED FOR YOU FINANCIALLY and you'll come in here and not LIFT UP YOUR VOICE. BROTHERS AND SISTERS, WE GOT TO BE WORSHIPPERS. WE GOT TO BE WORSHIPER. Come on. IF I'M GOING TO GET LOUD FOR UT, I'M GOING TO GET LOUD FOR IU. I BETTER GET LOUD FOR JESUS. I GOT TO GIVE HIM SOME PRAISE BECAUSE HE'S WORTHY. Come on, somebody. It doesn't take all of that. You don't have to ACT THAT WAY. YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT HE'S DONE FOR ME. YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT HE'S DONE FOR ME. YOU DON'T KNOW LIKE I KNOW WHAT HE'S DONE FOR ME. YOU DON'T KNOW HOW HE HEALED ME. YOU DON'T KNOW HOW HE HOW HE DELIVERED ME. >> >> COME ON, SOMEBODY. >> IT MIGHT BE WASTE TO SOMEBODY ELSE, BUT IT'S WORSHIP TO HEAVEN. IT MIGHT BE WASTE FOR SOMEBODY, BUT IT'S MY WORSHIP. Come on, you just Let's go. Come on. LET'S GO. I WANT SOMEBODY TO WORSHIP HIM RIGHT NOW. I WANT SOMEBODY TO WORSHIP HIM RIGHT NOW. I'M NOT SAVING ANYTHING. I'M NOT HOLDING ANYTHING BACK. I'M GOING TO POUR IT OUT UPON HIM BECAUSE HE'S WORTHY. I want to smell LIKE WORSHIP. I WANT TO SMELL LIKE WORSHIP. Just remain standing. I'm I'm almost done. There was another story, a very similar story to this in Luke's gospel. Early on in Luke's gospel, it said, "A woman comes in, a sinner, and she does the same thing that Mary has done." And they're at a they're at a Simon the Pharisees house, not Simon the leper's house, and she comes in weeping, worshiping, pouring out ointment upon him. And they're like, and this is what somebody said. If they if he just knew who she was, he'd stop her. If you just knew what their background was, you wouldn't let them come up in your altar space. If you just knew what they did, you wouldn't let them in the doors of this is the house of affliction. >> This is not the house of perfect people. >> And Jesus perceived in their heart. They were saying this and he said,"Simon, I came in here and you offered me no water to wash my hands or my feet." He said, "This woman hasn't stopped since she walked in." You want to know why those who have been forgiven much love much. Simon isn't worshiping because he hasn't been forgiven much. But when you've been forgi when you know what he brought you from, you can't you can't do this. We we we if YOU KNEW WHERE HE BROUGHT NATE WHITLEY FROM, YOU'D KNOW WHY THAT I'M DOWN HERE PACING BACK AND FORTH. YOU KNOW WHY WHEN I'M I'LL RUN. I'LL HURT MY KNEE RUNNING WITH THOSE KIDS. WHY? I KNOW WHAT HE'S DONE FOR ME AND HE'S WORTHY OF A WHOLE LOT MORE. Those who have been forgiven much love much. Those who have been forgiven much worship much. careful mocking somebody when they're worshiping because you don't know where he brought them from. You don't know what they they've been through. You know where great worship comes from? Great affliction. Some of us don't worship very much because we haven't been through much. or if we have, we've forgotten. But out of great affliction and sorrow comes great worship. So flash back to this scene with Mary. She's weeping, pouring out fragrance upon him. It will be the last time she sees him before the cross. This is my moment. But it could have been, you could have saved that for a rainy day. A rainy day is coming and I'm going to worship him now. Do you see? Here's Lazarus. He was dead yesterday and now he's alive eating a meal with us. Let me pour some worship upon him. He I watched a tragic accident few weeks ago. Why is he up here wor out of great affliction comes great worship loss brokenness from that comes worship I'm holding nothing back from him and they might think it's waste there are going to be people who think This is crazy. You don't have to do all this. Apostolic, Pentecostal, whatever. You can call yourself whatever you want. That's that's that's crazy. You can call Listen, I know better. I know where he brought me from. I know what he's done in my life. And I The least I could do is give him my life in return. The least I can do is give him my commitment and my dedication. Now listen. Worship. Worship. Worship goes beyond a church service and singing and clapping and lifting up your wor presents your body as a living sacrifice which is your the King James version says your reasonable service. But other English translations say your reasonable worship. You know what he wants from you. Not just for a few moments you for you to sing a song. He wants your heart. He wants your mind. He wants you. He wants all OF US. HE WANTS OUR entire life. And that is dedicating my what others see as waste. He sees as worship. Would you lift up your hands right now all over the sanctuary? I wonder if somebody I wonder if somebody will say, "You know what? I'm not going to hold anything back tonight. I'm not going to hold anything back tonight. I'm not going to hold anything back tomorrow. I'm going to pour out my life as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto him. Come on, would you lift up your voice right now? Would you I wonder if there's some worshippers in here saying, "I want him. I want him to have the fragrance of my life. I want him to have the fragrance of my dedication." Others might see it as waste and might think it's silly and crazy, but it's my worship. It's my worship unto him. If you just knew where he brought me from. If you just knew what he had done for me, that's why I worship the way I do. That's why I sing the way I do. That's why I live for him the way I do. Because he's worthy. Come on. As they begin to sing, would you lift up your heart? Would you lift up your voice? Come on, somebody dedicate yourself to him. This is my worship. >> Come on. >> Oh yes. I love you, Jesus. I give you my heart. I give you my mind. I give you my hands and my feet. I give you my entire being. Oh, God. It's because you're worthy. It's because you're I know it's weak and frail. I know it's not much, but this is what I've got. God, God, >> here I am. >> Worshiping you. >> All I am. All I am >> worshiping you, >> worshiping you, >> bowing down. >> Come on. Would you lift up your voice? Would you lift up your voice? Oh, >> worshiping you. >> Lord, here I am. >> Here I am worshiping you. I offer you my life is worship I am >> worshiping you. >> Bowing down >> bowing down in spirit and truth with lifted hands worshiping you. >> Oh I'm going to worship sing forever. I'm going to I'm going to worship you forever. I'm going to worship you. I'm going to worship you forever. I'm going to worship you. >> I'm going to worship you forever. I'm going to worship you. I'm going to worship you. >> I'm going to worship you forever. I'm going to worship you. >> I'm going to worship you forever. I'm going to worship you. I'm going to worship you. >> I'm going to worship you. >> Lord, you lift up your hands. I'm going to worship your name. >> I'm going to worship you. I'm going to worship you. >> I'm going to worship you. I'm going to worship you forever. I'm going to worship you. I'm going to worship you forever. I'm going to worship you forever. Here I am. >> Here I am. Worshiping you. All I am. All I am woring you bowing down in spirit and truth lifted hands lifted hands. I'm worshiping you. >> Mark records the same event. Jesus said, "Verily I say unto you, wherever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her." Something she did, we're talking about tonight, 2,000 plus years later. How do you want to be remembered? How do you want to be remembered? Oh, he was a great He's a great communicator. Oh, he was a great she was a great entrepreneur. She she she was a great a great teacher. Or do you want to be known as a worshipper? You know what would be great if that somebody said about me and you is that they're a worshshiper. They're that you know they they're no matter what they worship. I love seeing them worship. They're always there worshiping. They're always there. Just they're always worshiping. You know what a great I want my I want my little girl to remember that dad was a worshshiper. You remember when I would hold her just down here every service she'd come up. Why? I'm trying to show her this is what we do when we're in the house of the Lord. And what did she does? What is this? Listen, I'm not trying I'm not bragging but I watch my 10-year-old daughter down here coming down here first leading her friends. Why? Because that's what we do. We're worshippers. I that's the example we must leave our families and our children and this generation is that you know what they were they were worshippers. One more time. Would you lift up your hands? Come on. Would you lift up your hands and just say, "I want to worship you forever. I want to worship you forever. I want to worship you." Sing it. I want to worship you forever. I want to worship. >> That's what I want to be known as. >> I want to worship you forever. >> Oh, I want to worship you. >> I'm going to worship you forever. I'm going to worship you. >> I'm going to worship you. >> I'm going to worship. >> Can we just have the voices? Can we just have the voices? Keep that king. Oh, come on. Let this be your prayer. >> I want to Come on, sing forever. I'm going to worship you. >> I'm going to worship you. >> Come on, sing it. That's my prayer. >> Oh, I'm going to worship you. >> I'm going to worship you forever. I'm going to worship you. One more time. I'm going to worship you forever. >> Would you clap your hands to Jesus and give him some praise? Oh, I want to be a worshipper. Don't you? Would you put your hands together for Pastor Anthony as he comes to close this out tonight? I would like at this time for Pastor and Sister Whitley to just step forward right here down at the the bottom center. My pastor Mcool was going to do this.
