Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

The head texts: Abraham, the father of all who believe

  • He reads Romans 4: Abraham received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised, that he might be the father of all them that believe.
  • Abraham is the father not of the circumcision only, but of all who walk in the steps of his faith — and the promise came through the righteousness of faith, not through the law.
  • He reads Genesis 12: 'get thee out of thy country... and I will make of thee a great nation... and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.'

Scriptures: Romans 4:11-12, 16; Genesis 12:1-3

Against hope believed in hope: the footsteps of his faith

  • Who against hope believed in hope: Abraham staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strong in faith, giving glory to God.
  • Everywhere Abraham stopped, he built an altar: sacrifice, worship and prayer are the visible traces of a father of faith — and Isaac after him built altars like his dad did.
  • When Sarah was troubled that she still had no child, Abraham's faith had to carry hope for both of them: a father of faith has hope when there is no hope.

No father of faith, but a mother of faith

  • He testifies that he had no father of faith, but he did have a mother of faith — and God put men in his life, like Tim Gill and John Vasquez, who showed him what a father of faith looks like.
  • God put Mark McCool and Bishop Billy McCool in his life: they eat together, they laugh together, and their example taught him how to talk to his own wife.
  • His six-year-old little girl is watching: she needs to see what a family looks like, and to see some sacrifice and some altars in her father's life.
  • Look at what Jason has done in Ryan's life: a father's story does not stay in his own house — other families are watching, and the blessing was always meant to run to other families.

As for me and my house: the Father's Day charge

  • 'You've got a responsibility, Nathan': a man must decide now how he will treat his family and his wife, and walk in faith, because someone is coming after him.
  • 'As for me and my house, we're gonna serve the Lord': train them in the way that they should go, and when they are old they will not depart from it.
  • Inside his own close he baptizes Maxim in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, then runs the fathers' giveaway and dismisses the house himself.

revival we're experiencing revival here at first apostolic church so let's go the word of the lord romans chapter number four we're going to begin reading at verse number 11 romans chapter number 4 beginning at verse number 11. speaking of abraham and he received the sign of circumcision a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised that he might be father of them that believe though they be not circumcised that righteousness might be imputed unto them also and the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only but also look at this part here but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father abraham which he had being yet uncircumcised jump down to verse number 16. therefore it is a faith then it might be by grace to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed not to that only which is of the law but to that also which is of the faith of abraham who is the father of us all today i want to preach just for a few him a handclip of praise and open up your mouth and give him a praise can you do that right where you're seated can you just open up your mouth and say i love you jesus i love you lord i worship you today i worship you today oh mighty god i want to preach this this this for a few moments abraham the footsteps of faith since youtube's inception on the internet it has evolved from a website for funny videos and video clips to how-to videos and even they're now producing television series perhaps one of the most interesting and helpful things about youtube is its ability to help people learn how to do just about anything if you can't figure it out what do you do you go to youtube let's watch a video i know that's what i did it this morning because that's what we do that's where it's it's it's become a great educational tool but according to the u.s census bureau a third of american children are living in fatherless homes and some sociologists have gone as far as to say that the absence of a father in a child's life is the greatest social problem facing america certainly it would be absurd to consider youtube as an adequate alternative to an actual father figure in the home but many fatherless children turn to youtube to learn how to do many things many will turn to youtube to learn how to change a tire how to tie a tie and how to even balance a checkbook however youtube will never be there to pat you on the back youtube will never be there to straighten your tie or tighten your oil filter you too will not be there to pray for you or shepherd you you may be able to watch millions of videos about faith and god but it will not replace the influence of a father of faith this does not mean please hear me this does not mean that a mother cannot have the ability to spiritually shape and mold a child i can attest that i didn't have a father of faith but i did have a mother of faith i had fathers in the faith and i still do who have had more influence on me than my biological father did but biological fathers have a responsibility to be more than just a male figure in the home they have the spiritual responsibility to live a life of faith your wives and children are relying on you to impart your spiritual influence and fathers brothers are to exemplify faith to their families and we see this exemplified in the life of abraham to help the roman church understand the foundation of faith as a means for salvation the apostle paul uses abraham as the ultimate example abraham's faith in god was counted to him as righteousness but we are first introduced to abraham in genesis 12 with the record of god calling abraham to believe and to be the recipient of god's promises genesis 12 1-3 says now the lord hath said unto abram get thee out of thy country and from thy kindred and from thy father's house unto a land that i will sow thee and i will make of thee a great nation and i will bless thee and make thy name great and thou shalt be a blessing and i will bless them that bless thee and curse him that curseth thee and in thee shall all families someone say families all families of the earth be blessed so god tells him to do three things go from your country leave your father's house and leave your kinfolk but he gives him promises that i will make of you a great nation i will bless you i'll make your name great you will be a blessing you'll bless those who bless you curse those who curse you all families of the earth will be blessed because of you abraham abraham became a father of faith because he was willing to believe god and brothers if we are going to follow in the steps of our father abraham then we should consider his choices in lifestyle if we're going to be a blessing to our families and other families are going to be blessed because of our family then we must be men of faith we must follow after the example of those who have gone before us and so we see three things here in the life of abraham number one he lived set apart then he lived by faith and sacrifice and finally he lived as an example we find abraham living in a place called ur of the counties this was an important place for moon worship abraham was an idolater and the son of an idolater though he was from the long line of noah and shem somewhere in his family history men no longer worshipped the true god and instead worshipped idols as we read in genesis 12 there isn't an introduction given between abraham and god however it is god who initiates this call to abraham there wasn't anything listen to me there wasn't anything inherently good about abraham that provoked god to call him instead it was god's grace that initiated the call of abraham can i tell you this you didn't find god you ever hear someone say that i found god at so and so and such and such no brothers and sisters you didn't find god he found you he found you as an idolater he found you as a sinner he found you and it was his grace that began to lure you to leave the lifestyle and the sin that we were in and so here's the conditions for god's promises he's to leave his country his family and his father's house now this was no easy undertaking for abraham everything that was familiar to abraham he's going to have to forsake he is going to forsake the family business he's going to forsake the family inheritance he's going to have to become a pilgrim without a home but if abraham was going to be a father of faith he would have to leave the cultural norms and societal tolerances to find godly purpose abraham couldn't be a father of faith in ur old lifestyles and mindsets would have to be left in er all that abraham had known paled in comparison to what god almighty was about to give to him listen to me brothers just because you had an idolatrous father or family does it mean you have to be i'm going to say it again fathers just because you had an idolatrous father or a sinner father or a backslidden father does it mean that you have to be you can break from the generational habits and shortcomings that plague your family history are you hearing me today if you will hear god's call you can forsake the cycles that harm relationships and ruin futures too many men feel as if they have to behave and live as their fathers and grandfathers did if they were honorary cruel and mean that means they have to do the same men fathers god is calling us to break the habits and pitfalls of sin and willingness to come out from among them and be ye separate come on just because your dad was a certain way and just because your grandfather was a certain way does it mean you have to be that way and stop using that as an excuse stop using that as a crutch for your pitfalls and your downfalls you can make up your mind that god is calling me to a higher level abraham was doomed to live as his father tara did had it not been for god's grace and call is there any men who understand what i'm talking about today you know what it's like to grow up as somebody who was less than a man of faith you know what it's like to live to try to follow after somebody who was not godly you have to make up your mind right now that's not how i'm going to treat my wife that's not how i'm going to treat my marriage that's not how i'm going to treat my kids that's not how i'm going to treat the house of god i'm going to come out from irv calories and walk in faith somebody say amen listen you don't have the power to change yourself there are enough self-help books that you can read and inspirational seminars that you can attend to break the bonds of sin but there are some things you need to break through the power of god's anointing come on the anointing breaks it destroys the yoke it can destroy the yoke of past relationships it can destroy the past the past of past influences that you've grown up around and you can say i'm going to come out and follow my heavenly father to greener pastures i'm going to agree i want to claim the promises if you believe that why don't you clap your hands unto the lord oh hallelujah [Applause] he's going to have to leave his family now we're talking about being a man of faith leading your family but abraham had to leave some old family ways if he is going to claim the promises of god this was not a dishonoring or a disrespect rather this was about leaving the comforts of familiarity and dependence upon family abraham was going to follow god by faith and depend on god's providence and sovereignty to to care for him and his family but have no doubt that there will be those in your family who challenge your faith it's not just men it's women many have had to make the difficult decision to leave family creeds and traditions to obey god's word they would not be bound to cultural dogmas and domestic religions come on just because granddad went to a particular church doesn't mean it's a truth church just because there's some things i've i've done i've talked about it a myriad of times you get into a bible study with somebody and you start to get to talk about baptism and jesus name and the holy ghost and they'll go back and they'll find somebody in their family he was a licensed preacher somewhere without within the last 50 to 100 years they hadn't preached in a decade and all of a sudden here they come creeping out you mean you're going to actually believe the bible you're going to forsake granddad and grandma don't you know granddad and grandma is not going to have the books open at god's judgment seat it's going to be the word of god and whether or not you believed it and obeyed it that's what matters and that's hard i know that's difficult that's a difficult decision to make but they're listen to me now some families would rather their children be drunkards than drug addicts than christians they'd rather their family members disobey scripture than leave traditions oh god help me today if you're gonna follow jesus christ and be considered his child then you may have to forsake some family trees to embrace to embrace calvary's tree come on you might have to forsake some family traditions to get into this word of god the scriptures and say that's what i'm going to obey now listen abraham's family was wealthy but they had some fat bank accounts and abraham was going to have to leave his inheritance now you know if you leave us i'm writing you out of the will. you're not going to get granddad's guns or grandmas doilies you can have them because where i'm going there's a land for me a land a promise for me listen you can't measure what god's about to do in my life you can't measure the blessings you can't measure the promises you can have granddad's guns and you can have grandma's doilies i'm following for an inheritance from god i've got oh i wish somebody was helping me today come on you can't measure the blessings of god he's about to pour in your life if you'll forsake some old ways and some old ideologies and say i'm following after the promises of god come on there's treasures laid up beyond the blue you may not have them here but you've got a heavenly treasure you may not be wealthy on earth but your possessions will not be measured by forbes magazine come on come on man it's greater than that it's greater than that this life of faith is greater than that but let me tell you next he had to do he had to leave some worldliness behind too abraham had to leave irv chaldees and all the idolatrous lifestyle that was prevalent irv chaldees didn't offer what god could though abraham never truly possessed the promised land the promise was far greater than the present reality he found on irv chaldees you know you got to look at where you are right now is there something better if sin is constantly causing you to live a life of drama and fret and frustration and discouragement you're going to have to take some inventory and say it's just not paying off i'm going to i'm going to there's got to be something different here where i'm at you're going to have to take a look just let me just get to where you live and there might be some friendships there might be some friendships there might be some relationships that you're gonna have to take inventory and say listen when i'm around you all i get is drama all i get around you is drama all i get around you is is problems and issues and all i do is you listen you need to find some people in your life that meet your future not your past come on you need to find somebody who says let's get around some people who are living the things of god and they're seeing the promises of god fulfilled in their life and they got happiness they got joy in their home they've got peace in their home that's what you need to surround yourself with find some people who bit who meet your future oh yeah because you just can't stay where you are yet despite not having a child abraham realized irv chaldeas wasn't the greatest place to raise his children is raising your children in this world the best option that you have far too many fathers are willing to let the world raise their children then allow god the church and the scriptures to impart the wisdom that they need brothers dads we're called to be holy we are called to be separate from the things of this world we are not isolated from the world rather we are insulated from the world fathers if you're going to be a father of faith if we're going to follow after the footsteps of abraham after the footsteps of faith in your life then you're going to have to lead your family by faith and then you must be the example of consecration and separation come on we mustn't be so acclimated to this world we need to be acclimated to the word come on get your life lined up with the word of god oh jesus help me today come on the world shouldn't be the greatest influence your family has it should be it should be the house of god the things of god oh hear me now please hear me i i i grew up in a home that one parent didn't live this way and another parent did it it matters on where you're getting influenced follow those who have the greatest influence in your life who are leading you to greater godliness and holiness but listen to me now if you look at the story of abraham there are mountain peaks of achievement and valleys of disappointment a life of faith is not without its troubles isn't it amazing that people get baptized they repent get the holy ghost and we tell them you've got a new life and they do and then issues come when they say what's all this where are the rainbows where and listen a life of faith is not without his disappointments abraham was a man of faith but he also had to have the experience of separating from his family separating from his nephew lot to experience all of these things abraham built altars in worship but he also lied and wilted when he needed to be courageous abraham didn't have angels wings or a glowing halo hovering above his head he had clay feet and fervent faith brothers a life of faith isn't lived without its failures and flaws god's not calling us to be perfect god's not calling us to be perfect but we can claim his perfect righteousness as our own he takes our unrighteousness he takes our failures and our faults and then he imputes to us his righteousness are there going to be highs yes are there going to be lows oh yes have you ever made some mistakes being a dad this week you say something you shouldn't say you get annoyed you fly off the handle you say you know it's just you're not you're not he's not calling you to be perfect but he is calling us to realize that when you do make a mistake you can ask for forgiveness that's the hardest thing to do isn't it for us brothers we have to swallow our pride and ask our wives i'm sorry i responded that way i've had to do that with my little girl i'm not sure if you know this but she is a talker i'm sure she's a talker she's a talkist she's just talking all the time i mean she just don't have to be anybody in the room she's just talking and i have to go who are you talking to she's going myself mom mom mom got her this tall barbie thing it's like three feet tall and when she opened it up she goes finally someone i can talk to man you talk about feeling bad if you talk about feeling bad so you gotta have some time to talk somebody just let all that stuff out and me and me and ashley we're just not that we're not great talkers you know this we're just we like to have some you know quiet we can we can drive two hours and not say we're not mad at each other we just like be quiet and here's a little jibber jabber back here you know and you get come on dads you get imperfect and you get a little annoyed and say will you please be quiet and one of the hardest things you i've i've had to do is pull her aside and go and get down on my knees and say baby i'm so sorry i'm so sorry i i just i i just you're talking all the time and i just i had to i'm just so sorry that you do this to me you make me feel this way and i just want you to know that i love you but can you just please oh god please stop talking for just oh lord i love you i love you come on dad you ever feel that way and you just have to but it's hard to do but listen what that shows her is that it's okay to make a mistake but it's also even better to say i'm sorry and give her a hug and go on that's it's not we're not perfect he's not saying you have to have angel's wings thank the lord that's what that's what kids are for they've got all the angel wings listen it's frustrating sometimes living this life of faith things don't always go the way we have plans but he kept abraham just kept on walking even though he failed god a couple times he got back up and kept on walking come on you might fail come on you might fail you might have some hiccups you might have some setbacks but just keep walking in faith keep walking i know i know where my true north is i know where i'm following i've heard a voice from heaven i might have stumbled i might have tripped up i may have got off the path a little bit but i'm coming back to where i know i need to be that's a life of faith it's a it's hope what they're just saying it's hope paul says about abraham who against hope believed in hope there's sometimes dads that we're going to have to have some hope when there is no hope and they're going to have to look to you when sarah is troubled that she still doesn't have a child and she's left everything behind and she's yet 90 years old and no child she needs a husband to say trust god it's trust god how are we going to make it another day how are we going to pay our bills how are we going to get through this how are we going to get our kids back how are we going to do this we need some we need some husbands we need some dads who will step into our homes and say we're just going to keep on going to the house of god we're just going to keep on giving we're going to keep on praying we're going to keep on having family devotions we're going to keep on doing it because i know are you hearing me they need they need a voice of hope we don't need a voice of anger and disappointment and frustration all those times available to us at any moment we can do that but they also need to hear a voice of hope saying come on there's better days ahead there's light i see a light at the end of the tunnel there's there's revival for us there's blessings for us don't give up that's hope somebody needs to be a man of hope and a man of faith because he staggered not oh have you ever felt like staggering have you ever felt like staggering have you ever felt like giving up this week this month this year have you felt like giving up but listen you have to be a man who staggers not at the promise of god through unbelief but was strong in faith giving glory to god come on men we need some men of strong faith we need some men of strong hope who will say i'm still taking my family to church and we're going to still give and we're going to still worship and we're going to still witness and testify to the goodness of god it might still be barren but i believe the promises of god somebody say amen oh he believed he believed he believed but he was a man of sacrifice i read a book uh when i was working on my degree and the book wasn't really all that great but the the the one chapter that opened up the book was really good the rest of it i just kind of just skimmed through and do homework you know but this this this author said this the human race universally seems to believe that sacrifice must be part of the worship of a deity as a result when anthropologists look for evidence of the religious dimension in any people's life they look for traces of sacrifice that's powerful when they go look to see if there's any religious life in a culture of a bygone era they look to see were there any traces of sacrifice abraham built altars everywhere he went when he would build an altar and offer a sacrifice god would meet with him and reassure him of his promises and you know what happened god answered those prayers and he gave him ishmael and isaac man can i tell you this when isaac got older you know what isaac did he built some altars like his dad did you know why he gave him an example of worship and sacrifice men brothers fathers you know what we need to do we need to be the example of worship come on don't let y'all just gonna say it's not a man but don't let your wife out worship you and especially don't let your wife out worship you if you're louder at the ut baseball game then you are a church come on i watch those videos i see those people go crazy i've seen you go crazy and then you come in here and act like god had never done nothing for you you better have some traces of sacrifice that baseball team that football team that basketball team didn't give its life for you and i like sports let me tell you something you better be the example of worship in the house of god your kids are watching [Applause] they know what's important to you [Applause] they know what's important to you by the example you give them they know what you spend your money on they know what you spend your time on what is what are you worshiping there better be some traces of sacrifice because they're following in your footsteps and there better be some altars around there there better be some altars of worship and prayer and and consecration and godliness and faithfulness and hope and i wish somebody was helping me today uh well there better be some traces of sacrifice in our father's life if our musicians want to start making their way to their instruments i want to close abraham didn't let isaac go to youtube to find out how to pray brother neither was no youtube i understand but we need to show our children how to worship how to con i can remember listen i didn't have a dad who did that okay coming i'm speaking from authenticity and transparency today i didn't have that but you know what i had had a mother who taught me the power of prayer when things weren't going right she taught me how to pray when things weren't going right she taught me faithfulness to the house of god so then when i get older i need an example god put men in my life like tim gill and john vasquez they showed me what healthy marriages and healthy families look like i look for signs of altars and sacrifice i would look at brother gill's books on his shelf in his office and you know what i found a majority of on his shelves books on family marriage and parenting you know what that tells me that it's important then i don't know what i did surely wasn't anything of my doing but god put mark mccool and bishop billy mccool in my life i'm not sure if y'all know know this or not i'm sure you're aware they're the greatest fathers and husbands i've ever i've ever seen in my entire life i i just they're the greatest they're the greatest you're not here today without some men like bishop mccool and pastor mark mccool sacrificing showing us faithfulness showing us how to do it they are the epitome of a strong family unit we eat together we laugh together it is so important to me but you know why it's important to me if i got a six-year-old little girl who needs to see that she needs to see what a family looks like she needs to see how a husband treats his wife she needs to hear how i talk to her mother [Music] she needs to know what it looks like to say i'm sorry i shouldn't have said that i lost my cool for a moment you just keep on talking it's okay she needs to see that but you know what she needs to see i'm just going to be just i'm trying to get emotional but i don't come down here for y'all i don't come down here in worship during these two and three songs i don't do that for y'all i don't care if you see me or not i'd do it here i'll do it medora i'll do it at gmc you know why i got a six-year-old little girl who needs to see some sacrifice who needs to see some altars in my life and say that this is important would you stand to your feet come on dads come on husbands come on me and maybe you're not a dad yet but you need to follow the footsteps of that faith of our father abraham know how to sacrifice know how to separate yourself build some altars in your life had a little idea got a little idea trying to work on a little thing you know i like to write i hear this little girl in my back seat talking jibber jabbering in my office she always asks she's always asking me something always asking me something why do we do this why do we do that and we can blow that off let's go i don't know questions like this why do we go to church [Music] why do why do we lift our hands [Music] why why do we make a big deal of people getting baptized and don't dads moms don't blow that off you need to tell them the importance of this is why we do that because you got to show them and show them talk to them instruct them [Music] if you will train them in the way that they should go when they are old i remember dad bringing us to church i remember i remember grandpa an elder in our church i remember dad playing violin the church i remember i remember praying together as a family i remember worshiping together in the corinthians y'all feel what i feel today we've got a responsibility i know our goal is souls but the greatest souls that you can win are the ones that's in your home the greatest souls that you can influence and impact said brother i don't know how to make disciples yes you do they're the six year olds and five-year-olds in your home right now those are your little disciples and they're watching where you're going think about what jason lambert's done in ryan lambert's life the influence it it it it chokes me up seeing those two talk because i know what he's doing he's influencing i'm showing you how to walk neal hill showing you this place i'm gonna get there at we were supposed to get here at 8 30 and they beat us every sunday they'd be out there here they come nothing going on just come and sit in you know what he's doing build an altar he's saying jeremy this is important perez you're teaching bible studies on saturday afternoons there's some jeremies and josephs you're gonna watch one of these days and say that's what grandpa used to do that's what that's what great grandpa used to do why because we're walking in faith what are you doing that for what do you see i see something beyond this earth i see something beyond the treasures of this world i see a promise that god has spoken to me and if we'll walk in faith we will be a blessing to this family and will be a blessing to another family come on dad it's not just your family you're leading he was going to be a blessing to other families in the earth other families are watching you just like i did but there was some people in my life who showed me there's something better than what you're experiencing right now there's something better for you if you'll see the example and you'll follow in the footsteps of this faith and you can have a family of your own and you can show them what your dad didn't show you [Music] you've got a responsibility nathan you've got a responsibility to walk because there's someone coming after you maybe
