Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

Sober, prayerful, charitable: the inner life first

  • Peter warns that the end of all things is at hand, so believers are to be sober and watch unto prayer rather than letting their minds be clouded by fear and the noise of the age.
  • Above all things they are to have fervent charity among themselves, for charity covers a multitude of sins — love overlooks the faults of others instead of hunting for them.
  • Hospitality is to be used one to another without grudging: no one forgives begrudgingly, helps begrudgingly, or helps hoping to get something in return.

Scriptures: 1 Peter 4:7-9

Serve your gift

  • As every man has received the gift, so he is to minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
  • The church is not a self-serve buffet built around personal preferences of music, temperature and comfort; the only preference we are to have is for one another, in honour preferring one another.
  • Jesus taught that whosoever will be great among you shall be your servant, for even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
  • Christ made himself of no reputation, took upon him the form of a servant, and humbled himself unto death; our reputations, positions and titles must be put to death the same way.
  • Gifts come in all shapes and sizes — communication, music, hospitality, helps, encouragement, prayer and intercession — and every gift is given to be served to somebody else, not hoarded.

Scriptures: 1 Peter 4:10; Romans 12:10; Mark 10:42-45; Philippians 2:5-8

No off nights: the gift is always on

  • A gift is not put in the closet until a scheduled night: the singer, the usher and the teacher are to be present and serving whether or not it is their night, serving even those who are serving.
  • He tells of Bishop McCool, who for decades taught Bible class, preached the broadcast, pastored and oversaw the school, yet still fixed a mower for a neighbour two hours before he had to preach — serving the gift whether he felt like it or not.
  • He tells of Sister Peggy Bennett, who for more than thirty years has mailed a card with stickers every Friday to his little girl, and of Sister Pat Garrett, retired two years yet back full time helping a brand-new teacher with her kindergartners.
  • He tells of Sherwin Harvey serving at the doors, of men picking up trash on Saturdays with no spotlight, and of Sister Carolyn Daniel, principal longer than he has been alive, still learning new technology and training other teachers.
  • His wife Ashley oversees the music department, leads the choir, teaches in the school, helps Sister McCool with the accounting, and cares for members through surgeries, births and losses — the gift is present wherever we go.

David served his generation

  • David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep; a legacy is what you do with the gift for the sake of others.
  • In the parable of the talents, the servant who hid his gift was called wicked and slothful; the gift is given to be multiplied, not buried.
  • Find what comes natural to you, what people ask of you all the time, and what you wanted to do before someone talked you out of it — then develop the gift through learning and through the ministries of the church.
  • What Bishop McCool served to his generation is being served on to the next through Pastor Mark, through Anthony, and through the preacher himself; what has been served to us, we must serve to somebody else.

great growth there and we are so honored to be a part of that great work there in germany first peter chapter number four and we're going to begin reading at verse number 10. i'm going to read one verse today first peter 4 and verse number 10. this is what the apostle wrote as every man hath received the gift even so minister the same one to another as good stewards of the manifold grace of god now let me read it to you in the new king james version because i think it it brings it a little bit more clarity as each one has received a gift someone say a gift minister it to one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of god as each one has received a gift minister it to one another this morning i want to preach to you with your help and the help of the holy ghost serve your gift serve your gift and i've got jebs here with me today to help me serve the gift let's pray lord we thank you we thank you for the manifold grace of god that's been shed abroad in our hearts and i pray that your spirit will touch us today inspire us help us lord to realize what you've given us and i pray right now that there would be a sweeping of encouragement in this house god to realize that we can make an impact in this generation serving the gift you've given us in jesus name we pray and everyone said amen once you clap your hands again unto the lord today [Music] [Applause] serve your gift the context of first peter 4 and 10 is in the midst of a warning let me read it to you but the end of all things is at hand be therefore sober and watch unto prayer and above all things have fervent charity among yourselves for charity shall cover the multitude of sins use hospitality one to another without grudging as every man hath received the gift even so minister the same one or the same gift one to another as good stewards of the manifold grace of god peter is stressing the second coming of jesus christ and the need to be watchful and working peter felt even in in his time that the end of all things was imminent how much more can we expect the end of all things in the second coming of jesus in our own day peter urges his readers to be sober if the end of all things is near then believers should live accordingly if you are given a countdown of your life's final days you would live with great sober-mindedness and determination the opposite of sober mindedness is intoxication it has your mind cloud clouded and cluttered with something that steals your level-headedness one thinks of being intoxicated with substances likewise one can be intoxicated with the things of this world clouding your mind from clear judgment and level-headed thinking to be so reminded isn't to be unhappy rather it is to be focused and determined such sober-minded living comes from a life of prayer peter adds and watch unto prayer to be level-headed and sober in your mind is to be prayerful too many of us are clouding our minds with fear and conspiracy theories you can sit sit down you can sit down please calm down living in the information age has corrupted some people's leaded level-headed thinking and to combat such thinking one needs to be prayerful and possibly turn off the news a sober and prayerful life is a charitable life peter goes on to say and above all things have fervent charity among yourselves for charity shall cover the multitude of sins use hospitality one to another without grudging notice what comes first in sober-mindedness and prayer this is the inner life of the believer the inner life must be healthy first being ready for the end of all things is to have your inner life in order the overflow of a healthy spiritual life leads to charity charity brothers and sisters is love for one another revival listen to me now revival begins in our heart then it reaches out to others the inner man has received grace from jesus and desires to share that with somebody else love is warning others of the end and helping them prepare themselves notice what happens when a sober-minded watchful individual loves he says charity covers a multitude of sin the outflow of our grace baptized mercy induced love is that we overlook the faults of others that's pretty countercultural isn't it we're living in a day unfortunately even in a christian world where all we're doing is looking for the faults of one another that's all we want to do is find something wrong if you're doing something good let me look in your past and find something that you've said something that you've done let's reveal that but when you're sober minded and when you are you are in love with jesus and love is outflowing from your life you overlook the faults of others oh somebody say amen today charity and hospitality aren't a grudge you don't forgive begrudgingly i'm gonna say that one again you don't forgive begrudgingly well i guess i'll forgive you this time i guess well i guess i guess i love you again you know you don't love people begrudgingly it's not hard for you to love when you are in love with jesus and you've got your inner man in order you don't help people begrudgingly oh great here they come i got to give them help again oh no you don't help people begrudgingly if you offer help to someone you don't do it with strings attached i'm going to say i'm going to get it back there in the back so you can hear me you don't you don't help somebody hoping to get something in return that's a job oh that's indebtedness come on charity says what can i do for you oh i'm going to do this for you but one of these days i scratch your back then you might listen i ain't touching nobody's back you don't help someone begrudgingly you don't love someone begrudgingly you don't help them begrudgingly forgiveness doesn't look for anything in return well they didn't accept my apology doesn't matter as long as you offered the apology and this is not an apology i'm sorry you feel that way that that's not an apology i'm sorry you took it that way no you turn around say i apologize i said it the wrong way and i apologize you don't don't necessarily understand where i'm coming from let me say it another way that's charity that's hospitality and we need a we need a revival of that here and we need a revival of that on social media someone say man i'll move on before i get in trouble as we have seen the context of our scripture today in first peter 4 10 the inner life of the believer takes precedence then from that flows charity and serving others the issue today in the christian church is that we've got it backwards our inner life has become frail and sick because we want the church to serve us far too many believe that the church is here to serve them and their needs church has become nothing more than a social club with an emphasis on meeting personal preferences if things aren't meeting the needs of the member then they'll go somewhere else or nowhere else at all churches have become religious buffets if your church doesn't serve what i'm looking for then i will find one that does this is self-serve christianity they look for a particular type of music the temperature and the sanctuary must be comfortable the sound can't be too loud or too soft the preacher must be dynamic and interesting while also being able to be a marriage counselor administrator and be a psychic to know when people are sick and in the hospital every age group demographic hobby needs to be represented in small groups there should be an enneagram test personality color-coded exam and the ability ability for someone to meet others in their personality scale the church needs to be small and feel like a family or it needs to be mega large where introverts can hide out the reason why there are modern worship style church services and traditional style services in our churches today is because we've become a self-serve christianity calm down our mission and temperaments have grown so distorted that we've lost the mission of the church and that is others well well it's too cold in here guess i'll come another time and they warm it up well it's too loud we know we have now out here in the uh the vestibule area we have earplugs because listen we love to praise and worship and we like to get loud when we do that and if that is a problem for you you can go get some earplugs because listen we're not here to please you or to serve you this is not about your preferences this is not about your likes or dislikes we are here to serve the world and reach other people the only preference we are to have is for one another romans 12 and 10. this is what paul says be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love in honor preferring one another that's the only preference you're to have is somebody else that's right i like the message bible's paraphrase of this text let me read it to you love from the center of who you are don't fake it run for dear life from evil hold on for dear life to good be good friends who love deeply practice playing second fiddle that's what we need to do we need to learn how to play second fiddle we prefer somebody else before our own needs to prefer your brother is to put his needs first before your own our mission listen to me now our mission isn't to create a church that pleases everyone that's impossible but we can serve one another we can create an environment that serves and serves with a spirit of gladness well i guess they can play that music if that makes them happy no that's begrudgingly instead it should be this may not be my favorite type of music but it glorifies jesus [Applause] hey i like the old sanctuary well i like the new one how about this i like the old sanctuary but look how much we've grown and let me just say this too we didn't build this building to give you more space we built this building to get more people in here [Applause] that's what we are here well i can spread out i can put my coat over here and my towel over here and my purse over here don't you get used to that because somebody might need that seat who needs the holy ghost we are not here oh somebody help me right now we are not here to meet your preferences and moods and emotions we are here to reach the world somebody say amen pastor i didn't like what you said somebody else might have somebody else might need that remember we are not here for you we are here to serve the world to reach the world look what he says first peter 4 10 as each one has received a gift minister it to one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of god jesus brothers and sisters has come to give us life and life more abundantly part of that abundant life is salvation from the judgment of our sin another important part of that abundant life is servanthood make sure you see that abundant life isn't just being served it's being a servant we aren't called to be rulers over others we are commissioned to serve one another mark 10 42-45 but jesus called to them called them to him and saith unto them you know that they which are accounted to rule over the gentiles exercise lordship over them and their great ones exercise authority upon them but so shall it not be among you but whosoever will be great notice this whosoever will be great among you shall be your minister or your servant and whosoever of you will be the chiefest shall be servant of all for even the son of man came not to be ministered unto but to minister and to give his life a ransom for many jesus the king of kings and the lord of lords did not come to this earth to be served he came to give us an example of serving others this is so paradoxical this is so counter-cultural isn't it the idea today is that if you're going to be great then you must have power and authority but jesus didn't come to be ministered unto he came to minister put another way jesus took on the form of a servant that's what he came here to do philippians 2 5 3 let this mind paul is saying this let this mind being you that was also in christ jesus who being in the form of god thought of not robbery to be equal with god but made himself of no reputation meaning he didn't go look for a title or a position he came to serve that's what he came to do he didn't want a reputation he didn't care how many followers he had he only had 12. well i've got to have i got to have a thousand followers to make a difference i gotta have five thousand friends on facebook to make a difference no he made himself of no reputation that's the issue today we're trying to make a reputation for ourselves instead of giving our reputation to christ no one wants to put servant on their social media profile leader we are called to be servants but made himself of no reputation took upon him the form of a servant and was made in the likeness of men meaning you're pretty low we're pretty low he humbled himself to become like us meaning we're not that special see that's our western culture has made us think that we're all special you're special you're a somebody and yet god himself had to humble himself to be like us meaning he had to come and humble humiliate himself to become like man and being found in fashion as a man he humbled himself and became obedient unto death even the death of the cross we need to put our reputations to death our positions our titles to death we are called to be servants when the crowds came to crown him king of israel he removed himself from the crowd certainly he was the rightful king of the jews but in order for him to become not just king of the jews but king of kings over all the world he had to willingly submit to the role of servant he served the world by giving his life to the perfect will of god let me tell you what servanthood looks like let me give you some marks of servanthood it comes from a personal relationship with jesus it doesn't distinguish between the small from the large tasks well there's only two or three people here i can't preach i'm going to preach conference i'm not preaching i'm not preaching a sunday school class he can't preach a sunday school class you're not going to preach a conference servanthood is fueled by holiness holiness it doesn't calculate results of serving who's watching who's watching who's going to reward me who's going to see this servanthood doesn't discriminate who it serves it doesn't matter if you're red yellow black or white it doesn't matter if you're old or young we are called to serve everyone and if you don't like that if you don't like that well i think we should serve a certain type of people they are the doors right there we are not to discriminate who we serve you can be seated please please be seated i know where i am right now i know where i am right now if there's one tinge of discrimination or bigotry in your life you need to get in this altar and repent of that jesus was a brown man from the middle east and he came to serve everybody and that's what we are called to do we are called to serve everybody servanthood is a lifestyle it builds community it builds acceptance that you are welcome here when it's when our church starts to become our for and no more we are in trouble this is my pew this is my seat no it is not get up get your purse get your pocketbook move so someone can sit there your name is not on that pew the only name that's on that pew is the maker of that pew and what we need to do is make room for others that's not our foreign no more we are we are nowhere near where we need to be we need to keep growing we've got eastern europeans here we've got romanians and moldovans we've got africans here we've got jews here we've got everything here i want more i want to reach everybody in this community in this way that's what we are called to do they need some hope let first apostolic church be the place that they find hope and love and servanthood someone say amen oh lord help me right now listen i thought about serving i don't i don't know where i read it i heard it i'm not sure if i heard it or read it but i wrote it down in my notes that to serve is to serve our gift serve our gift look at look at this a different translation god has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts use them well to serve one another god has given you a gift and when he gives you the gift he expects you to serve the gift what does that mean brother name each of you has been graciously given a gift gifts come in all sorts of shapes sizes and significance the gifts and abilities that you have been given are not for your use only but they are to be served to others some have been given gifts of communication you can write teach and preach others have gifts of music you can sing play and perform others have gifts of hospitality you make others feel welcome and appreciated others have gifts of helps you know how to come alongside others and get tasks completed some have gifts of encouragement you write notes send texts and offer encouraging words of support some have the gifts of prayer and intercession you can touch heaven on the behalf of others these are gifts that god has given you and the gift that he has given you is to be given to somebody else it is to be served to somebody else when they come here and when they are out there you have been given a gift and that gift is for them that's a gift when he gives you a gift he wants you to serve that to others but here's the important part gifts are to be served not hoarded let me let me pastor for a few moments okay your gifts shouldn't only be used when the spotlight is on you your gift shouldn't only be used when the spotlight is on you listen to me now please listen to me i'm not trying to be me am i trying to be mean or crude trust me but if you play an instrument and you aren't scheduled to play you still need to be here well i'm i'm off tonight no no no listen there's no off nights for you when you god has when he gives you a gift oh tonight's my night let me get my gift out oh i'm i'm off today so i'm just going to go ahead just keep this and put this in my closet somewhere and i'll come get it next week no no no no you are to serve the gift at all times if you aren't scheduled to usher you still need to be here if you're a sunday school teacher and it's not sunday morning you still need to be here you don't put the gift in the closet and take it out only when you're needed that's not how that works you are to serve it to others and if it is your night off or your schedule off of those things you need to serve those who are serving how do you do that by being here and encouraging them and helping them you don't have an off night listen to me choir listen to me choir when the choir is singing and you sign that handbook get your height up here well uh i got a cough that i developed 15 minutes before church today lip-sync put a mask on we have no more excuses get up there we need why because you've been given a gift and there is no off or on switch you are to serve it to others well i'm not here i can't i don't feel good then get out here and worship so someone so they can see you being a part of the team oh all right all right all right calm down calm down listen acs and aka teachers got a brand new year we started this this week listen to me now i know you have long days and long know when that child is going to walk through those doors one of the holy ghosts wanting to get baptized and they're looking for their teacher they're looking for you need to be here whether or not you're on or you're off serve the gift if you want to honor god then use the gift he gave you the gift he has given is present with us no matter where we go the gift isn't married to a church service got a gift i just don't know what to do i just i feel like i got to serve this gift somewhere can i come on saturday and serve the gift let me tell you about somebody else let me tell you about sister carolyn daniel been a principal at a christian school for longer than i've been alive and she walks these halls maybe not as fast as she used to but her hearing is as good as it's ever been her her her hearing is a gift if you're whispering it over there she's hearing it over there she can hear it she hears those kids acting a fool and she's calling those names from her office it scares me i'm like what am i doing but you know what she's doing how many graduating classes how many students you know what she's doing she's learning the latest technology she's not intimidated by technology she's not intimidated by a pandemic she's not intimidated by mass and quarantine and social distancing she's showing up here in meetings weeks on in before school starts saying how can we serve my gift eternity only knows the impact that this lady has made serving her gift not in the pulpit not with a spotlight but she's serving the gift can i serve it can i serve it is it can i still serve it can i serve the gift can i serve this to another child can i serve this to another class and now you know what she's doing she's training up others other teachers derek daniel is here i think he lives here i don't know when he sleeps he does all kinds of stuff for us i'm telling i don't know how he keeps up with it but you know where he learned it he learned it from a mama who said just serve the not on purpose let me tell you about my wife let me tell you about my wife not only is she the most beautiful woman in this room she oversees the music department preparing for services weeks in advance she leads the choir and teaches in our school then she leaves here and drives to help sister mccool and assist with the accounting of the church and the school then she comes here with me and sits in hours of leadership meetings counseling sessions while making sure everybody who has a surgery a child birth or a loss on their family gets an edible arrangement and she does all of that while putting up with me and easton shenanigans let me ask you what are you doing with a gift what are you doing with your gift what are you doing with the gift who are you serving your gift to you see the gift is present no matter where we go and we need you to find your gift listen to me i'm almost done you want to get ready we need you to find your gift let me ask you a couple questions about your gift what comes natural to you what comes natural to you i remember sitting in a high school class i was a uh a junior in in high school unless i you know my story i'm just want to have a good time and make people laugh but there was a moment i had in as a junior in high school and this boy behind me tapped me on the shoulder and he just unloaded all of his problems to me i was like thinking then going why would he tell me that then i'd go to another class and somebody would just start telling me all their problems and i'm going i'm in the back of my mind going do you know who you're talking to like this is like you must have got the wrong person what i realize now looking back that god was giving me a gift to listen to people and to pastor people what comes natural and that doesn't really feel like that natural to me at times but there are things i realize that he's gifted me to do i don't know why he's done it i don't want i don't know why he gave it to me all i know is i can go it's a little crumpled it's a little uh it's not developed all that great yet but here can i write something can i teach something can i preach something it's just it's just comes natural what comes natural to you there are some people in this room there's some things that come so natural to you there's people who can build things i've seen brother blevins build things brother edward i'm going it's all sixes and sevens to me it's just like reading some a foreign language and they just can i see some of you you can just i watch sister sandy ryan command the attention of a classroom i'm thinking i wish i could do that and teach that and she can spout off shakespeare and i'm going uh mark said i'm gonna go look and i said i see you what comes natural to you what do you feel comes natural for you what do people ask of you all the time think about it what do people ask you all the time i'm trying to help you too [Music] see your gift what did you want to do before you let someone talk you out of it what did you want to do until somebody said you can't do that you don't want to do that that's ignorant that's foolish you don't want to do that and so you've just [Music] i don't know if i can do that i'll just hide this what have you been running from what have you been running from i don't feel comfortable i don't feel comfortable opening the doors for people i don't feel comfortable getting behind a soundboard i don't feel comfortable working lights i don't feel comfortable i don't know what are you running from might be what he's given you stand to your feet listen acts 13 36 i feel the holy ghost today this scripture just keeps coming to my mind [Music] for david after he had served his own generation by the will of god fell on asleep i like the niv's translation of this now when david had served god's purpose in his own generation he fell asleep notice three things here brothers and sisters david served god's purpose in his generation david god's purpose and others he then dies this is what we call a legacy a legacy is what you do with the gift do you use your gift for the sake of others or do you hide it and bury it just hope no one asked me about it i think of the parable of the the talents the lord of the house gave talents to three individuals two multiplied their talents but one hid it and when the lord of the house came back and he asked him about what he did with a gift he said i know that thou art a hard man and you reap where you've not sown meaning he reaps where you sow go back and read that [Music] he said i know you are a wicked man and you reap where you don't sow so i buried him and the lord of the house said thou wicked and slothful servant i gave you a gift of singing and you won't use it i gave you a gift of teaching and you won't administer it i gave you a gift of hospitality and you're afraid to [Music] i gave you that gift to multiply it how did david serve his generation i promise i'm almost done i'll get out of your way he was a worshiper david served his generation as being a worshiper he was also a poet writing poems and psalms for the lord that we're still reading even today he was a king establishing a kingdom he was a prophet who spoke prophetically of the coming messiah he was a musician singing unto the lord and for those who were afflicted he was a warrior fighting and leading armies he was a leader investing in others david was a father equipping solomon to build a temple that he wouldn't be able to build but he envisioned it and said let me give you the blueprints and you will build it he served his generation but his works have carried on to future generations i know i don't mean to do this to embarrass bishop [Music] he's leaving a legacy in pastor mark mccool he served his generation and the next in him and he served his generation by investing in anthony and me you don't think for a moment and when he comes to fix that mower i'm not listening and watching picking up things listening to things you think about a church in maryville tennessee in a school in maryville tennessee because he served a generation [Music] he wasn't writing the pastor and profile for himself he was writing it for others [Music] he wasn't getting up and teaching bible class and preaching voice of pentecost for himself he was doing it for you he wasn't turning around getting on the radio three times a day for himself he was taking on criticism and insults for others and you think we're going to get up here and preach some other message some other gospel lord have mercy i'm taking what he has taught us what he has put in us what sister mccool has put in her and sister jamie and kelly what we are doing is we're taking the gift that has been served to us and now i'm going to serve it to christian and christians going to go serve it to somebody else that's how you serve the gifts to your generation lift up your hands right now come on i want you to pray i want you to pray in the holy ghost somebody in this room is allowing their gift to go dormant you've put it in the closet you've hit it but he wants you to serve that gift to somebody he wants you to serve that gift maybe it's teaching maybe it's writing maybe it's singing maybe it's encouraging maybe it's hospitality maybe it's something i can't even think of but he's given you something to serve to somebody else and you've allowed it to lie dormant and you've not used it you're afraid to use it maybe somebody talked you out of using it but now god is saying i want you to use the gifts come on would you pray in the holy ghost right now would you pray in the holy ghost when the holy ghost is here if you feel like getting out of your seat and out of your pew there's a there's a spirit of empowerment that is in this room right now there is a spirit of encouragement in this room right now where you can unwrap the gift where you can unpackage the gift that god has given you so you can serve it to others come on we need your gifts this church needs your gift this world needs your gift come on i need it you need it oh yes what is the gift [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] and that's what i'll be [Music] [Music] whatever it is come on we need you to serve your gift [Music] i'd say yes [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Applause] [Music] yes [Music] i will be what you call [Music] [Applause] [Music] i mean let me just the holy ghost is here today we need your gift at this church we need your gift need what god has empowered you to do and it might be something we don't even know about and that's perfectly fine but when you got a gift you'll find a way to get it but perez elder perez come here for a second brother juan perez has started churches all over the united states has evangelized in spanish-speaking churches for many many years and he moved all the way from houston texas where there's many churches that he could preach and stay busy and he moved here to chattanooga had their graduating class just this summer you know what he's doing he's serving the gift he said i might be somewhere new a new place a new challenge but the gift is with me and let me share it with somebody and we're baptizing people in our how do you develop your gift and i'm done get us the pastor maybe you don't know how to develop or unwrap your gift let me give you some advice okay i like application and practical practical tools to help you get an education go to a trade school there's if you're looking to learn something go to youtube it's there and it's free there's a lot of things that you can learn on the internet if i can just keep you off the social media and just learn that would be really awesome that'd be really awesome [Applause] learn something but right here in the church there are ministries where you can learn if you want to get involved with something you want to get involved with ushering go find brother sharon harvey go find brother ken bounds and say how can i do it teach me learn we got right now we got james lynn up there learning production with lights with justin he's a bass player an unreal bass player he's off today learning i'm gonna do something else find something that you can learn to do we need people to help us grow this church and grow this school we need your gift one more time lift up your hands right now and give the lord praise and thanks for what he's done today [Music] hallelujah lift up your hands and love jesus lift up your hands and love jesus savior we praise you savior i received your word this morning
