Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

Name, Image, Likeness

  • The head reads set the terms: God created man in his image and after his likeness, gave him dominion over the creation, and called their name Adam — name, image, and likeness are biblical long before they are commercial.
  • God did not speak man into existence as he did the rest; he reached into the earth he had made and formed man like a potter with clay, and man alone in all creation carries the distinction of being God's image-bearer.
  • Adam named the animals because a title is not enough — there must be distinction in a name — and God gave man a name of his own, with responsibilities: to subdue, to multiply, and to spread more image-bearers as his vice-regents on the earth.
  • The generations turn in Genesis 4 and 5: Seth is appointed instead of Abel, men begin to call upon the name of the Lord, and the book of the generations repeats that man was made in the likeness of God and blessed and named by him.

Scriptures: Genesis 1:26-27; Genesis 5:1-2; Genesis 4:25-26

The False Likeness and the True Image

  • The enemy is never given a personal name in the Bible, only titles — Lucifer means the shining one, Satan the adversary, Devil the accuser — and what removed him from God's presence was the resolve, “I will be like the most high.”
  • Isaiah 14's five “I will” sayings expose the root of sin: man trying to become God, grasping at a likeness he already possessed; sin always overpromises and underdelivers.
  • By one man's disobedience many were made sinners — as a whole team is set back for one player's offence, all humanity fell in Adam its federal head — but a second Adam was to come and undo what the first undid.
  • Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God: not a resemblance or a shadow but the exact representation, so that when you have seen him, you have seen the Father — he came in his Father's name, not as a second person beside him.
  • By inheritance he obtained a more excellent name: as the preacher's daughter inherited her father's surname whatever name she was called by, Jesus did not come in the titles Father, Son, or Holy Ghost, but in the name of Jesus — and there is salvation in no other name.

Scriptures: Isaiah 14:13-14; Colossians 1:15; Hebrews 1:4

Taking the Name in Baptism

  • Baptism is not administered in titles: a cheque signed “husband” or “father” is no good at the bank, and a loan application needs a name; when you are baptised in the name of Jesus, you take on his name, his image, and his likeness.
  • Mark 16 sets the order — he that believeth and is baptised shall be saved; it is not he that is baptised and believeth — belief comes before the water.
  • The book of Acts runs the pattern past every class of hearer: the Jews at Pentecost, the Samaritans, the Gentiles at Cornelius's house, and John's disciples at Ephesus all heard the same answer — be baptised in the name of Jesus, and the Holy Ghost is for every one of them.
  • After baptism comes the conforming: discipleship is not a class taken once but a lifetime of being moulded and fashioned, buried with him in baptism and putting on Christ, until Christ be formed in the believer.

Genesis chapter number one. We're going to read two very familiar verses. Verses 26 and 27. Then we'll skip over to chapter number five. Genesis 1:es 26- 27. And God said, "Let us make man in our image." Someone say image. And after our likeness. Someone say likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, over every creeping thing that creepeth o upon the earth. So God created man in his own image. Someone say image again. In the image of God created he him. Male and female created he them. Chapter 5 verse 1 and two. This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man in the likeness, someone say likeness of God made he him. Male and female created he them. Blessed them and called their name. Someone say name. >> Adam in the day they were created. Today I want to minister to you with this thought. N I L N I L. Name, image, likeness. Does that sound familiar around here in Knoxville? Brother Chad, that sound familiar to you? N I L. Name, image, likeness. Put your Bibles, your devices down, and let's pray together. Father, we thank you for your spirit that is here today. We thank you for the worship that's gone forth, the anointed worship today and your presence that has filled this room. But now, Lord, we want to partake of the word of God as frail as I am, God. Lord, I pray that you would help me to declare and to communicate your word with clarity, with uncction, with anointing today. Let there be revelation. Let there be understanding, Lord. And I pray that lives would be changed Lord through the power of your spirit and through the authority of your word. In Jesus' name we pray. And everyone said amen. Now clap your hands under the Lord today and give him a shout of praise. Look at somebody before your seat and say, "Nil." You can be seated. N I There's a bunch of you in this room who know what I'm talking about. There may be a handful who do not know what I'm talking about today. So, let me give you a brief synopsis of what NIL stands for and why it's relevant to this day. NIL stands for name, image, and likeness. For decades, for decades, uh let me just let me qualify this. For decades, college athletes poured their hearts into the into their game, to their craft, and didn't get paid for it that we know of. Some got it in McDonald's paper bags, but you know, whatever. Uh, but in 2021, the rules changed for college athletics. Suddenly, athletes could profit from their name, image, and likeness, endorsement deals, social media posts, appearances. And fast forward to today, and NIL has exploded. Schools, boosters, and collectives are pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into NIL deals. Top transfer portals are commanding millions. Some athletes reportedly asking four to5 million dollars to stay at their school or switch schools. The transfer portal, a fancy term for athletes looking to transfer schools and partake of NIL, have turned into a free agent frenzy where teams, fans, schools, athletes all weigh the costs and benefits. Who can we afford? What's the return on our investment? How long are they going to stay? Can we create a culture with a oneandone player? Pay them whatever they're asking for. Back up the brinks, the Brinks truck and give them what they need. We want to win now, not later. It's the power of Nil. It's created a frenzy on social media, especially the last 10 days as the portal for uh NCAA Division One basketball teams are switching players. I mean, I mean, whole teams, whole programs, new players, new coaches. It's the power of NIL. I wrote this this little abbreviation NIL in my notes a couple of years ago because name, image, likeness are biblical terms. And so I I thought about that over the last few days. I wrote a a lesson on being God's imagebearers and I began to think about it again. the power of N I L. When you go to the creation accounts of Genesis chapter 1 and two, I want you to notice the care that God took before creating men. Everything preceding the sixth day of creation was preparing the right environment atmosphere for humans to live and thrive in. light, sky, land, seas, plants, animals were all in place so that when man, the crown of creation, stepped onto the scene, he could not just survive, but he would thrive. Two important Hebrew words appear in the creation account when it comes to the creation of man. One is created, that God created man. Man did not create himself. Man did not evolve from some other organis organism and become what he is today. The Bible says that man is created by God. God has created male and female. He created them in his image. The other words are made or formed and it means to fashion or shape something from existing material like a potter working with clay. God created the universe out of nothing. Exnahilo nothing was borrowed. He did not borrow from something else to create the heavens and the earth. He spoke those things into existence. Light came into existence through the spoken word. But when it came to man, man did not speak man into existence. But God reached down into what he had created, the earth, and began to form and to fashion man. AND HE SAID, "LET US make man in our image." God made man in his image. And therefore, man is God's image bearer. This is the only thing in the creation account that has that distinction or that label as imagebearers. Trees, animals do not carry the image of God within them. Man, on the other hand, has the unique status of being set apart from every other creature. ANIMALS AND PLANTS ARE PART OF CREATION, but they fall under the dominion of man. God created man in his own image and in his own likeness. Some would say that these two words image and likeness are are separate in image that God created in man what he would pre what he would prepare to be the perfect man. The perfect man which would be Jesus Christ that in man he is created in the very image of God. This is why, listen to me now, THAT GOD ALSO prohibited from man making images of him. He said, "You're not to make an image of me. You're not to make an BECAUSE YOU'LL GET IT ALL WRONG. INSTEAD, I'm making an image out of you, and that is to be me." My God, I feel him right now. I WANT YOU TO UNDERSTAND THAT GOD created him. He created us in his image. YOU, MY FRIENDS, bear the marks of a creator WHO HAS FORMED AND FASHIONED you into his image. Nothing else has that distinction. Nothing else has that has that title of being God's imagebearers. And he told them, not only would he be the image, but also the likeness. And perhaps this is the spiritual makeup that God puts in us. whether it's our spirit man and our soul, our conscience, our moral ability to choose between right and wrong. So we have the image and we have the likeness. But I want YOU TO UNDERSTAND THAT BOTH OF THESE THINGS are in us. Some would say you separate the soul from the spirit and some would say you separate the spirit from the flesh. But I want you to understand wherever you fall in that God HAS COME TO REDEEM THE WHOLE MAN. GOD created the man spirit and soul and flesh and all of it is to be redeemed. I want you to understand that every PART OF US, EVERY PART OF YOU IS NOT A MISTAKE. THERE IS NO PART OF YOUR LIFE THAT IS A MISTAKE. GOD HAS CREATED you in his image and he has created you in his likeness. My God create a created man in his image and his likeness. But he's not done. Chapter number five follows obviously chapter number four. Let me read the end of chapter number four of Genesis for you. And God for God said, "She hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel whom Cain slew. And to Seth, to him also there was born a son, and he called his name Enos." Then began men to call upon the name of the Lord. Someone say name. Go right into chapter number five. This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man in the likeness of God made he him, male and female created he them and blessed them and called their name Adam. So, as man is made in the likeness and the image of God, God said it's not enough. They must have a name. My God, there they they're just not just created beings. There must be a name. If you go back to chapter number two, when God seen the loneliness of Adam, he brought to him all of the animals, the birds and the cattle, and he said, "Adam, I want you to name them because there must be a distinction in what they are and who they are. It's not just birds, cattle." He said, "I want you to put a name on them because a title is not enough. There must be a distinction in the name. THERE MUST BE SOMETHING. NOT JUST HOW THEY LOOK AND HOW THEY FORM AND HOW THEY FUNCTION, BUT THEY MUST have a name upon them." And so Adam, NOT ARBITRARILY, ADAM LOOKED AT everything and said, "That's a cow and that's a lamb and that's A GOAT AND THAT'S A PARROT AND THAT'S AN EAGLE AND THAT'S A CROW." He begin to give the names all the animals NAMES BECAUSE NOT ONLY IS THERE A DISTINCTION IN WHAT THEY ARE, THERE is a distinction in who they are. >> I'm preaching all. HE SAID, "CALL UP. CALL THEM A NAME." GOD gave them names. He gave he gave Adam a name and it is the name Adam. It comes back to the Hebrew word for Adam which is dust or dirt. It tells us that we are created from the dirt. That we are created from the earth. And yet God says from DIRT YOU HAVE COME and to dirt you will go back. Why? Simple. We're not God. Therefore, we must understand that he is God and he is our creator and that we must humble ourselves and submit ourselves to him and his sovereignty. And so God gave them a name. I want you to have a name. It's not just that you are in my likeness and in my image. I must call you something. And in calling them a name and giving them a name, it created a covenant bond between the creator and the creation. >> But not only did they have a name, they had responsibilities. He said, "Adam, you are to subdue the earth. You are to multiply. You are to take care. You are to take dominion." Here's the reason why. In the ancient in the ancient east in the in the in the ancient days, kings would set up images of themselves in their realm. Obviously, they could not be everywhere at once. So, they would set up images of themsel with the name and they knew who ruled here. Therefore, Adam and Eve are God's creation, his imagebearers, and he gives them responsibility to be his vice regents, his ambassadors on the earth. And in that, THEY ARE TO SPREAD OUT. THEY ARE TO MULTIPLY and do what? MAKE MORE IMAGE BEARERS. WHY? So when you look at Adam and you look at Eve and you look at Cain and you look AT ABEL, YOU WOULD SEE THE IMAGE OF GOD and realize he's the one in authority around here. And so when you WANTED TO CALL UPON the king, you called upon the image bearer and you call upon the my God, I feel him. YOU HAD CALL UPON THE NAME of the king who ruled. Someone say amen. I know I'm going fast, but I'm going somewhere. Name, image, likeness, nil. They've got a name, they've got the image, and they've got his likeness. Unfortunately, the story doesn't end well, does it? In the garden, there is a serpent. Bible readers don't receive much information as to how the serpent arrived in the garden, who it is, or why he does what he does. If you go forward in Isaiah chapter number 14, it contains one of the most sobering passages in all the Bible. On the surface, the prophet pronounces judgment on the proud king of Babylon. Yet, the language that the writer uses rises far above any earthly ruler or king. And we get a picture of the fall of Lucifer. But I want to stop here just for a moment and let you understand something. The Bible never gives our enemy a personal name. It is only titles. The Bible does not even give him the dignity of a personal name. Lucifer is not a personal name. It means the shining one. Satan is not a personal name. It means the adversary. Devil is not a personal name. It means the accuser. So here is this being without a name tempting God's imagebearers, his likeness, the name. And what does the serpent do? He does what got him kicked out of God's presence in the first place. Isaiah says this is what he said of himself. this fallen angel. I will ascend. I will exalt. I will sit upon the mount. I will ascend above. And this is the last one. And this is the kicker. Don't overlook this. He said, "I will be like the most high." What got him removed from the presence of GOD WAS THE IDEA THAT he could create himself to be more than what he was. So when he is slithering through the garden, he comes to Adam and Eve and he says this to them. God is keeping something from you. If you were to eat of this tree, you will be like gods. I I I tried that and look where it got me. Let's see what you do with this. Sin always overpromises and underdelivers. I WILL BE LIKE GOD and you're out slithering, eating dust. Eve takes of the fruit of the tree. She thinks she's GOING TO BECOME LIKE GOD. But here's the issue. She was already made in the likeness of God. Doesn't that sound like our world today? I'm born in the wrong body. I'm not supposed to be made this way. I WANT TO DO SOMETHING ELSE. HE'S MADE A MISTAKE in me. I'M GOING TO BE MY OWN GOD AND be sin always overpromises AND UNDERDELIVERS. I WILL BE LIKE THE most high. I will be like God. But here's the deal. WHEN WE TRY TO DO or undo what God has already done or we think something ELSE WILL GIVE US PLEASURE OR fulfillment other than what God has already given us, it is called sin. It is thinking that we know better than God. God put you here. He gave you responsibilities. He's given you a name. He's given you his image and his likeness. And yet, where do we find them? At the one place they're not supposed to be at. And who is there? A serpent. YOU WILL ALWAYS find your enemy in places where you shouldn't be. All right. I'll be like God. I'll be like the most high. It's that word like. It's that word. Don't overlook that word. Highlight that word in Genesis and in Isaiah. It is a false like. It's not the same word that is used in the Hebrew when God said, "Well, make them in my likeness." It's a different word. Why? BECAUSE WHEN YOU TRY TO USURP God's authority and sovereignty, YOU WILL ALWAYS COME up short from the original and it will never give you what you desire. And this is what happens. The serpent is is is defeated. He is to crawl around, slither around on his belly and eat dust with the promise that there is one going to be one. It is the seed of the woman who will crush his head and he will have his foot bruised by you. Then he looks at Adam and Eve because he did to them what he had done to the to the fallen angel. He removed them from his presence. It's the same thing. But here's here's what we must understand. The image remains even though it's corrupted. Even though we are sinful by one man's disobedience, Paul would write in Romans chapter number five, many were become sinners because Adam, our federal head, sinned. Now, let me just stop. I'm teaching a little Bible study here for a second. We're talking about NIL. When you when we watch football, when you watch football and somebody if one individual goes off sides, who is penalized? The whole team. The one the one individual isn't set back five yards. The whole team is set back five yards. Adam as our representative in the garden when he fell, when he sinned, when he rebelled, all humanity that was wrapped up inside him. I feel him now. When he everything WAS WRAPPED UP INSIDE OF HIM FELL. BUT THERE WAS ONE TO COME. THERE WAS A SECOND ADAM. THERE WAS A NEW ADAM THAT WAS TO COME. HE WAS THE SEED OF THE HE was to COME AND UNDO EVERYTHING THAT OUR FEDERAL head had undone. I'm talking about name, IMAGE, AND LIKENESS. I'M TALKING ABOUT NAME, IMAGE, AND LIKENESS. I'm going somewhere. I'm moving fast. So sin came into the world by one man's disobedience. BUT WHEN YOU JUMP OVER INTO THE NEW TESTAMENT, WHEN YOU JUMP INTO the New Testament, everything is going to be redone that was undone. The first sin was man TRYING TO BECOME GOD. BUT IN SALVATION, IT WAS GOING TO BE GOD BECOMING MAN. You didn't hear me. I SAID IN THE FIRST SIN, IT WAS MAN TRYING TO BECOME GOD. BUT IN SALVATION, IT WAS GOING TO BE GOD BECOMING MAN. WE TRIED TO BECOME WHAT WE WEREN'T. THEREFORE, HE CAME TO THIS EARTH TO UNDO AND TO MAKE US WHAT WE WEREN'T. >> Someone say, "Amen." I'm moving fast. Adam was the original name, image, likeness, made to reflect God and exercise dominion as his vice region. Sin corrupted the design and the enemy tempted humanity with a false likeness trying to seize Godhood on their own terms. But Jesus Christ, the perfect man, the last Adam, came as God in the flesh to restore what was lost. Colossians 1:15 says this, "Who is the image OF THE INVISIBLE GOD, THE FIRSTBORN of all creation?" So Jesus came, my God, he came as the image. He came to restore the image. HE CAME TO RESTORE WHAT SIN HAD UNDONE. The Greek word for image is icon. This is more than a resemblance or a shadow. It means an exact representation, a visible manifestation of what was invisible. Like the precise imprint on a coin or the perfect reflection of the original. Jesus is the visible image of the invisible God. Jesus said this. He said, "When you've seen me, you've seen THE FATHER." HE DID NOT SAY, "WHEN YOU'VE SEEN ME, YOU'VE SEEN THE SECOND PERSON OF THE TRINITY." THAT'S NOT WHAT HE SAID. HE DID NOT SAY, "WHEN YOU'VE SEEN ME, YOU'VE SEEN THE ETERNAL SON." THAT'S NOT WHAT HE SAID. HE SAID, "I'VE COME IN MY FATHER'S NAME. AND WHEN YOU'VE SEEN ME, YOU'VE SEEN THE FATHER." PHILLIP, HOW LONG HAVE I BEEN WITH YOU? AND YOU STILL WANT TO SEE THE FATHER? I'M TELLING YOU, PHILLIP, I AM HIM. I HAVE COME. I WISH SOMEBODY WAS HELPING ME PREACH AROUND HERE. I'M TALKING ABOUT THE NAME, THE IMAGE, AND THE LIKENESS. HE CAME. He came as the image of the invisible God. Writer of Hebrews chapter number one verse4 verse4 says and as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they his name wasn't father cattle birds fish no cows Horses, pig, goat, eagle, crow. They have to have a name. Father, son, holy ghost. Those are not names. The writer says, "HE HATH BY INHERITANCE RECEIVED A MORE EXCELLENT NAME." WHEN I had a little girl 11 years ago, 11 years ago when I got a little girl, we named her Eston Greer. What's she named after? She's named after some girl who served ice cream at an ice cream store here in town. We were trying to come up with a name we couldn't. We had boys names for weeks. Had boys names for weeks. When we found out we were having a girl, we were like, "What do we do with that?" Tristan Wyers walked into Ashley's class. He said, "Sister Ashley, I met this girl at the ice cream shop. SHE HAD THE MOST BEAUTIFUL NAME. Her name was Eastston." Ashley came home. She said, "I heard the most beautiful name today." Eastston. But that's not the name she inherited. When they put her name on the birth certificate, it said Eastston Greer Whitley. She inherited her father's name. And when Jesus came in the IMAGE AND THE LIKENESS OF GOD, HE DID NOT COME IN THE NAME OF FATHER. HE DID NOT COME IN THE NAME OF SON. HE CAME IN THE NAME OF JESUS. YAHWEH SAVES. YAHUSHA SAVES. I'M COMING TO TELL SOMEBODY ABOUT THE NAME OF JESUS. IT'S THE GREATEST NAME. IT'S THE MOST EXCELLENT NAME. NEITHER IS THERE SALVATION IN ANY OTHER. THERE'S NO OTHER NAME GIVEN AMONG MEN. ONE OF THESE DAYS, EVERY KNEE WILL BOW AND EVERY TONGUE WILL CONFESS THAT THE SON IS LORD. KNOW THAT JESUS IS LORD. I WISH SOMEBODY CALLING THAT NAME RIGHT NOW. I'M TELLING YOU, THERE'S NO SALVATION IN ANY OTHER NAME. AND YOU SHALL NAME HIM FATHER. NO. AND YOU SHALL NAME HIM JESUS, FOR HE SHALL SAVE HIS PEOPLE FROM THEIR SINS. >> He came in the likeness and the image of God, but he needed a name, Anthony. He needed a name. And there's only one name. Um, listen. If you want me to write you a check today, I want, brother, I want you to write me a check for $1,000. First of all, we're going to have to have a deposit. Second of all, the check is no good if I put husband at the bottom. >> You take that to regions and you know say that's not a name. That's what he does. But that's not who he is. If I write father on there, they'll say not good enough. Send it back. Make sure you get his name on that because anybody can be a father. If I put son of Brenda Whitley, they're going to say that that doesn't mean anything to us. We need his name. If I went to go apply for a loan at the bank AND I PUT FATHER, HUSBAND, OR SON ON THAT, THEY'LL SAY, "ANYBODY, EVERYBODY'S THAT AROUND HERE." BUT WE NEED YOUR name on this to for IT TO BE VALID. THAT'S WHY WHEN WE BAPTIZE, WE DON'T BAPTIZE IN TITLES. FATHER, SON, AND HOLY GHOST. THOSE ARE NOT PERSONAL NAMES. THOSE ARE TITLES. BUT WHEN YOU ARE BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF JESUS, YOU ARE TAKING ON HIS NAME, HIS IMAGE, AND HIS LIKENESS. MY GOD. THAT'S WHY WE GET BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF JESUS. THAT'S WHY WE PRAY IN THE NAME OF JESUS. THAT'S WHY WE COME ON, SOMEBODY. BECAUSE THERE'S POWER. THERE'S POWER. THERE'S POWER. STAND TO your feet. Someone say, "Name." >> Image. >> Image. >> Likeness. Adam, your rebellion, your disobedience, and your sin corrupted the image. God didn't send Samson. He didn't send Joshua. He didn't send Isaiah. He didn't go back and resurrect Moses or Abraham. The prophet Isaiah said, speaking of the Lord, he said, "By my own right hand, I've brought salvation." God was not about to let somebody else do what he can only do himself. That God was manifest in the flesh, that God was incarnated in the man Christ Jesus. This is important that there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. He was not simply a reflection. He wasn't simply a hologram or a 3D or something like that, but he came IN HUMAN FLESH. PAUL said he came in the likeness of sinful flesh. Not that he was sinful, but he came in the likeness of human flesh that he could get hungry and he can get thirsty and he can get angry and HE COULD GET TIRED, BUT HE WAS NOT SINFUL AS OUR HIGH PRIEST. AT EVERY POINT he was tempted, but he WAS TEMPTED WITHOUT SIN. SO he came in the LIKENESS OF HUMAN FLESH, BUT he did not come in sinful, corrupted flesh because it took a perfect sacrifice to redeem an imperfect man. And so he came in the name of Jesus and he came as the perfect image and the likeness of God. But here's where we're not finished. When you have faith in the name of Jesus, for as many as received him, to them they become the sons of God who believed in his name. It is the name. We're going to baptize Theodora here in just a moment and anybody else today. When you are baptized in the name of Jesus, it is for the salvation of your souls. Jesus said in Mark chapter number 16, he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved. He that believeth not shall be damned. It is not he that is baptized and believeth. It is he that believes and is baptized shall be saved. Men and brethren, what shall we do? Repent and be baptized. Every one of you. Who's every one of you? Oh, brother Willie. That was just for the Jews on the day of Pentecost. Okay, great. That's Acts two. Jump over to Acts chapter number eight where we find the Samaritans. >> And they called for Peter and John to pray with them that they might receive the Holy Ghost. For at that moment THEY HAD ONLY BEEN BAPTIZED in the name of the Lord. So if half Jew, half Gentile had to be baptized in the name of Jesus. And Jews at Pentecost had to be baptized in THE NAME OF JESUS. BROTHER WILLIE, THAT'S NOT FOR GENTILES. LET'S GO OVER TO ACTS CHAPTER number 10 where it's us heathens that are there at Cornelius's house and it's Peter who's preached at the Samaritans and at Pentecost and he preaches to them AND AS HE PREACHES JESUS UNTO THEM THE HOLY GHOST FALLS UPON THEM FOR THEY HEARD them speak with then Peter looked around and said well they're already saved guys let's go ahead and go on he SAID CAN ANY MAN FORBID WATER IF YOU ARE FORBIDDING ING PEOPLE >> FROM GETTING BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST, I'd be careful. But Peter said, "Is there anybody who can forbid them to be baptized?" They said, "Nope. Get us some water. Let's get these Gentiles, these heathens, into the water." AND THEY WERE BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST. Brother Willie, that was just for them. That wasn't for good church folks. All right, let's go to Acts chapter number 19 where we find the Apostle Paul coming upon the shores of Ephesus and THEY FIND JOHN THE BAPTIST. A lot of people call themselves Baptist but don't believe in baptism. They had received the word of the Lord. And so Paul said, "Have you received the Holy Ghost since you first believed?" That tells me that you don't receive the Holy Ghost when you initially believe. I said, "We don't know whether there be any Holy Ghost around here." And he said, "Well, uh, that's interesting. How were you baptized?" IF IT DID NOT MATTER how they were baptized, why would Paul ask them that? Well, we were baptized in my grandma's church and we were baptized. Well, how are they baptized? HOW ARE YOU BAPTIZED? THEY SAID, "WELL, we're baptized in John's baptism." He said, "That's great. Well, I'm appreciative of what John did. John's baptism was in preparation of the Messiah." Well, guess what? THE MESSIAH'S COME. HE DIED AND WAS RESURRECTED. NOW, you are baptized in the one who has come to save you. They said, "That sounds great. What do we need?" He said, "Lift up your hands." And when they laid their HANDS UPON THEM, THEY RECEIVED THE HOLY GHOST AND SPOKE WITH TONGUES AND THEY WERE BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF JESUS. SO WE GOT JEWS, SAMARITANS, GENTILES, AND GOOD BAPTIST FOLKS ALL GETTING BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF JESUS. Get ready. But when you are baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins, the next thing is being conformed into his image. That's called sanctification. That's the process of growing in Christ. Jesus said this, "Go ye therefore and teach all nations." But most modern translations say, "Make disciples." There's an importance here because the Greek word for teach that's used the majority of the time in the New Testament is the same word for doctrine. The word here that Jesus uses is mold shape. Where have we heard that before? Back in Genesis. Because the creator has come and now that you are my name, my image, my likeness, you are to go like Adam and multiply, take dominion, expand the kingdom, and make, conform, and fashion. Disciplehip is not a class you take once in your lifetime. Disciplehip is a lifetime class. where we are conformed into the one who made us, this sin nature, this corrupted nature. Even though I can take his name in baptism and I can receive his spirit, I still have to deal with this nature. And so Paul would say, "I'm praying until Christ be formed in you." That when you are baptized, we say you take on the name of Jesus. Well, the Bible really doesn't say that. But what it says is we are buried with him in baptism, putting on Christ. So the idea is this that when you are baptized in the name of Jesus, you are putting on that image and that likeness upon you. You are taking the authority. You are taking his lordship upon you. And you are walking in his righteousness, his power, his name. That's a lifetime. We're going to baptize Theodora here in just a moment. But I wonder if somebody needs to lift up their hands and say, "Lord, I want my image to be your image. Not my platform, not what everybody thinks about me on social media, but I want to be formed into your image. I want to be conformed into your likeness. I wonder if somebody would run to an altar today. Come on, we'll baptize somebody else. If you want the Holy Ghost, I'm telling you, it's available to you today. If you got a life that you need to repent of, you've made some mistakes in your life, you've got rebellion and disobedience in your life, I want you to know that Jesus has come to make a new creation out of you. Old things are passed away, and behold, everything can be made new. I want you to know that there's hope for you today. Would you lift up your hands? Lift up your heart. Come on. Would you lift up your voice? I want his name. I want his image. I want his likeness. I want his power. I want his glory. I want it in my life.
