Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

The unknown God of Athens

  • Paul waits in Athens and is stirred by a city wholly given to idolatry, disputing daily in the synagogue and the marketplace.
  • Brought before the council on Mars Hill, Paul points to their altar inscribed to the unknown God and declares that God to them.
  • The Athenians are shown to be very religious, yet worshiping ignorantly a God they do not know.
  • The preacher warns that many in the modern church have also built altars to an unknown God, worshiping only when the feeling or the setting suits them.
  • A low view of God produces low living, while right thinking about God leads to right living.

Scriptures: Acts 17:16-31

Destroyed for lack of knowledge

  • God says his own people are destroyed for lack of knowledge, not the heathen or the pagans.
  • The same habits and struggles keep defeating believers who do not know who God is.
  • Like Isaiah, a person who truly comes into contact with God is changed and cries out over his own uncleanness.
  • Believers are urged to acquaint themselves with God — to familiarize themselves with him and make a habit of him, not to meet him only on Sundays and Wednesdays.

Scriptures: Hosea 4:6; Job 22:21

How God has revealed himself

  • God has revealed himself in his creation: the heavens declare his glory and show his handiwork day and night.
  • Creation and conscience show his wonders and his law, but they are insufficient by themselves to reveal a redeeming God.
  • God has revealed himself in his written word, and ultimately in a person: the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.
  • In Jesus dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; he is the image of the invisible God.
  • The sermon closes with the apostolic call to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, as the preacher baptizes a young convert at the end of the service.

Scriptures: Psalm 19:1-3

Scripture index: Acts 17:16-31; Hosea 4:6; Job 22:21; Psalm 19:1-3.

where we will go today Acts chapter number [Music] 17 thank you for your giving thank you for your response again to everyone who helped uh this week in preparation for our Fall Fest who are here Friday I thank you so much for your help and your service and all those who have been giving to uh to the Appalachian relief thank you again the Lord is going to help them and bless them and of course he will bless you and I also want to say thank you for uh believing in missions I I love missions somebody taught me uh many many years ago when I was uh preparing to go travel and evangelize I was meeting with I met with an evangelist one who I admired and I said can you give me some tips can you give me some insight what would help me and you know how to know support myself and those types of things preaching he said I'm going to give you a piece of advice that will change your life I was all ears he said as as an evangelist he said people are going to give to you they going to stay in hotel rooms stay in people's homes they're going to feed you they'll bring you gifts they'll they'll give you an offering things like that he said it becomes easy for you to become enti like you expect those things as you travel he said you're going to have to fight that the entire time you do that he said here's how you can combat it and here's how your life can be changed he said if you will give to missions every month if you'll put aside money out of your pocket every month beyond your tithe and you will give to missions every month God will open up doors and do things in your life you never could imagine and so right then right there I began to give to missions every week and I have kept that in my family in my heart I believe if you give to missions God will bless you and help you I love missions has anybody ever been blessed because you've been given to missions amen that was a round of great Applause there for a second uh hopefully you've been blessed more than that but we are blessed because we give to missions we put God first in all that we do acts 17 we're going to begin reading at verse number 16 we're going to read just a little bit so we can get this story we're uh get it all the context that we can as we talk about it today acts 17 beginning at verse number 16 when now while Paul waited for them at Athens his Spirit was stirred in him when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry therefore he disputed in the synagogues with the Jews and with The Devout persons in the market daily with them that met with him then certain philosophers of the epicurian and the stoics encountered him and said what will this babler say others some he seeth to be a Setter forth of strange Gods because he preached unto them Jesus and the resurrection and they took him and brought him unto the areopagus saying may we know what this new doctrine whereof thou speakest is for thou bringest certain strange things to our ears we would know therefore what these things mean for all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else but either to tell or to hear some new thing then Paul stood in the midst of Mars Hill and said ye men of Athens I perceive that in all things you are too superstitious for as I passed by and beheld your devotions I found an altar unto this inscription to the unknown God whom therefore ye ignorantly worship him I declare unto you God made the world and all things therein seeing that he is Lord of Heaven and Earth dwelleth not in temples made with hands neither is he worshiped with men's hands as though he needed anything seeing he giveth to to all life and bread and all things and have made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the Earth and has determined the times before appointed and the bounds of their habitation that they should seek the Lord if happily they might feel after him and find him though he be not far from everyone of us for in him we live and move and have our being as certain also of your own poets have said for we are also his offspring for as much then as we are The Offspring of God we ought not to think that the godhead is like under gold silver Stone Graven by Art and man's device in the times of this ignorance someone say ignorance God winked at but but now commandeth all men everywhere to repent because he hath appointed a day in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained whereof he hath given Assurance unto all men and that he has raised him from the dead this morning I want to pull our text from verse number 23 to the unknown God to the unknown god let's lift up our hands one more time let's pray father we are so thankful for your spirit that is here in this room but God I pray that you would open up the hearts of your people Lord I pray that the word of God would be the seed of the word would find good ground today let it be the sword of the Lord and divide us under every heart Lord I pray that the word of God would be light to illumin those who are in darkness Lord and I pray father that the W that the word of God would be made flesh in the lives of your people today as we declare unto them the known God in jesus' name we pray and everyone said amen would you clap your hands one more time today our text takes place in ath I'll show a video here as we begin so you can kind of visualize where we are in Acts 17 takes place in Athens Athens was the chief city of Greece was conquered by Rome though it was no longer a military power it was still the intellectual and cultural center of the Roman Empire um and even the whole Omen Roman world and this is where the intellectual Elites lived the cultural center was the Agora this term is translated as Marketplace in our English translations the Agora was more than merely a shopping area uh it was way more than a Marketplace like where you would go buy and sell things uh this was uh something way more important than that this was the center of their life there in Athens so it was first of all a media center before newspapers televisions and radios you got the news from the Heralds that were uh in the uh the Agora the marketpl the Agora was also the financial center s that served sort of as a stock market if you please it served as the intellectual and the art center of Athens and this is where we find Paul preaching once he was concerned with the idolatry that he saw in the city then we see the epicureans and the stoic philosophers they see and hear what Paul is is preaching and they desire to hear more about this the epicurian I want you to understand were hedonists who relied heavily on their senses they rejected reason or rationality to explain the world instead they wanted to rely on feelings and experience they were always searching for the next moment of pleasure the stoics on the other hand were skep skeptical of personal experience and relied heavily on reason and self-control the epicureans and the stoics were the two leading philosophical schools here in Athens the epicurian were the and the stoics were the two leading ones here uh two extremes were apparent self-gratification and the pursuit of pleasure characterized the epicureans and self-denial and no outward show of emotion characterized stoicism and here they are they had innumerable temples idols and altars revealing that the Athenians were very religious and in that way they made them seem intellectual and tolerant because as our text says they are always wanting to hear something new and so the Athenians were intrigued by Paul what he was saying there in the marketplace and so they invited him to the AR Arab Opus the arag Opus was the Town Council here and it means the hill uh the ays or the rock of ays and also known as here as we read the uh place called Mars Hill and this is the elite of the city the intellectual and cultural capital of the Empire they brought him here because they wanted to hear more about it no longer was he going to be in the marketplace they wanted to bring him here to marsill so he could tell them more of this doctrine that he was proclaiming but this is more than just a place where debates took place this is is not please don't let that be in your mind that Paul is brought there to Simply to debate this was also their city council this is where the they ruled this is where they made judgments and so in essence they brought Paul here and put him on trial for what he was proclaiming this is one of the most famous most well-known sermons in the New Testament but I want to show us a few things as we walk through this text this morning Paul stood in the midst of Mars Hill and said ye men of Athens I perceive that in all things you are too superstitious for as I passed by and beheld your devotions I found an altar with this inscription to the unknown God whom therefore ye ignorantly worship I declare him unto you we need to understand something first because our King James Version Bible translates this word as superstitious and really when you think of superstitious you think of the modern translation or the modern definition of uh of of superstitious meaning a belief or practice resulting from ignorance fear of the unknown trust in magic or chance or a false conception of causation however that's not what this Greek word meant at that time originally this Greek word was used to to describe somebody as being very religious or God-fearing and if you read other English translations of this text it will say that they were very religious so it wasn't as if the Athenians were nonreligious they were overwhelmed with a a myriad of religious beliefs they weren't as Stevie Wonder said very superstitious or as a famous offic manager once said I'm not superstitious I'm a little stitious you'll get that later or your Gen X student will tell you about it the people of Athens were very devoted to their multiplicity of gods and even to gods they didn't know he passed by their places of worship or devotion as it said and he found an altar to the unknown God the people of Athens were so zealous to worship someone or something they even built an altar to a god they didn't know he said whom therefore you worship him I declare unto you I've been pondering this this phrase to the unknown God since uh we were in Europe a few weeks ago and one of the speakers made reference to this text and something stirred within me and I want to share that with you and I've been sharing it with our students here at Elevate student Chapel on Friday mornings we been we started a series earlier this year entitled things most surely believed and we're walking through foundational core doctrines of the apostolic faith and so Friday we began a series on what we call uh theology proper or the doctrine of God and we're looking at the attributes of God and so I want to share some of that with you this morning as we are talking about this unknown God noted author and preacher aw toer said what comes comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us he goes on to say in his book the knowledge of the Holy the low view of God entertained almost universally among Christians is the cause of aund lesser evils everywhere Among Us with that in mind we can conclude that a high view of God leads to a high and holy life Lifestyle on the other hand a low view of God leads to low living put another way right thinking about God leads to right living much of what ails the modern church is faulty thinking about God for there to be a Reformation or a a Revival in the church there must be a Reformation of how we view God to begin to change our thoughts about God and our Wonder of him we must rightly know who he is when you want to get to know somebody you want to learn about their characteristics your relationships deepen and mature when you begin to know each other we must not attempt to know God on a low level of information you can't worship what you don't know you can't live for someone you don't know too many in our modern churches have built altars to an unknown God too many are ignorantly worshiping an unknown God what I mean is that they have a shallow knowledge of him like the epicurian they want to feel or experience something therefore they only worship when they like the song or we canine it to what we call a worship set a worship service and worship songs those things are fine that's great vocabulary that's fine nothing wrong with that but when we only want to worship God when we feel like it or it meets how we're feeling you have a very low view of God or like the epicurian you depend on your experience and your feelings and you refuse to engage your mind because you're afraid if I involve reason and thinking then I will dismiss the Holy Spirit that's not true we are to be renewed in the spirit of our minds I wish somebody was helping me Preach Today God does not require of us to leave our brains in our cars when we walk into a sanctuary you don't have to disengage your mind or your thinking or your understanding when you come into a Pentecostal church we don't simply rely upon feeling and emotion when we worship we cannot depend upon whether I want to feel or want to pre I want to worship and when I feel like it he is worthy worthy of worship at all times he's worthy of worship whether you like the song or you don't like the song he's worthy of worship whether you like the the environment or not he is worthy of our worship oh yes some Christians worship an unknown God like the stoics who would rather stand stoically and unemotionally in fear of what others might think about them they want to reason away any emotional response or doctrinal truths they disagree with we want to hear more about this babbler is going to say but I'm I'm afraid if if I get too emotional we got emotionalism you're just being emotional we I'm not trying to to repeat Pastor Anthony's sermon from last week but I was stirred that if we're going to work worship him and I know as Pastor Anthony said last week you might worship him a whole lot at home you might sing real loud at home you might cry you might holler at home you might want to roll on the floor at home that's fine I don't know why you wouldn't want to do that here all right stoic I'm not moving I'm not standing I'm not clapping I'm not singing I'm just GNA stand here move me with something and then if you if I meet you in your reason and your intellect you want to dismiss it in place of your tradition it's not that they aren't religious they have an outward appearance of religiosity but their knowledge of God is shallow they have devoted themselves to a god they have imagined or only have second in secondhand information of we heard last week that you can severely lack commitment to God if you don't have a person personal private altar but there's a reason why some don't have an altar in their life there's a reason for a lack of your prayer fasting worship Bible study evangelism faithfulness worship it become it comes from an ignorance of not knowing god he is unknown to you again you can't worship what you don't know you can't live for a God you don't know you won't pray to a god you don't know so you have an altar to the unknown God when that unknown God come short of your human expectations it's easy to walk away from him it's easy to tear down or deconstruct that God because he's unknown to you y'all ain't going to hear me today are you you can't live in follow a God that you will not come in contact with then are youall okay I I I want to help you there are some who are comfortable not knowing too much about God because if they come to know him more they know that they become more accountable so I'm so I'm comfortable only showing up on Sunday morning I'm comfortable I'm comfortable where I'm at because if I come any closer what is he going to expect of me what is going to change if I come into contact with him and so you are comfortable as him being the unknown God oh you know his name you know where he lives you know all of that but you don't want to know him know him oh because when you come into contact with him like Isaiah did and you hear them singing Holy Holy Holy oh Worthy is the Lord God when you hear that you cannot be left unchanged and you say woe is me I am a man of unclean lips I want you to know you can know the unknown God today I want to know him but there is a danger that looms hear me I I'm not I'm not trying to be mean I'm not trying to be I'm not trying to upset you today it just happens naturally sometimes but there is a byproduct for your lack of a knowledge of God hear the word of the Lord Hosea 4 and6 My People someone say my people I want you to hear how personal this is God is saying he's not saying this of the pagans and the barbarians and the heathens he is saying my people are destroyed throw that up there Hosea 4 and6 I want them to see it my people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge you want to know why you keep falling into the same mess over and over again you got a low knowledge of him you want to know why the same habits and the same sins or the same struggles you constantly wrestle with keep beating you it's because you don't know who he is but if you ever got an understanding of who God is if you ever SE him high and lifted up come on you'd have a change take place in your heart and because you my my people my people not heathens and barbarians and pagans my people are destroyed you have rejected knowledge I will reject thee not knowing God will lead to your destruction ignorance of God leads to bondage but I want you to know you don't have to remain ignorant of him God has revealed himself unto us God now listen I said it before as we began they didn't know what I was preaching today and I they were singing that song I was Pi days and days and days ago but God is not standing in some far off galaxy somewhere he is near you and he wants to reveal himself unto you God wants to show you more about himself than you could even imagine but there are three ways three ways if I can just walk you through this there there are a few ways that God has revealed himself unto us now I want you to I want I want to show you something here because this is important job 22 and 21 man this this this word here has been on Fire Within me I'll read this acquaint now thyself with him and be at peace thereby good shall come unto you want to get rid of the chaos in your life you want to get rid of the fear and the anxiety in your life and want peace acquaint now thyself with him do you want good do you want blessing in your life the best way here it is is to acquaint thyself with him but listen to me keep it up there keep it up there keep it up there the word acquaint in the Hebrew is more than just simply going and shaking somebody's hand say well how are you my name is so and so and you are so and so nice to meet you that's not exactly what that word means that word means to familiarize yourself with and to make habit of when I married Ashley quintessa I didn't meet her on my wedding day there had been a courtship for almost 15 months I wanted let me say this I'm I'm now as soon as I met her I fell in love with her and I asked her to get married two months afterwards that is quick because that hair was not coming back you see it right there that is terrible I had to make a run for it but I'm for getting engaged quick but I'm all but I'm not you hey take a little time to look learn somebody acquaint now thyself and the and me say this too when we got married on that day June 11th 2010 that wasn't the only day that I talked to her I don't not I don't just talk to her on Sundays and Wednesdays either I don't I I I don't just show up and talk to her when I want something you ain't hearing me if you're going to know God and if you're going to know your spouse you got to you got to acquaint yourself with you're going to have to show up more than this Sunday morning and Sunday night and Wednesday night you're going to have to say Lord I want to be in fellowship with you it will change you you'll want to I want listen the more I get to be with her the more I love her and the more I love her the more time I want to spend with her the same thing happens in the spiritual once you begin to acquaint thyself with God once you begin to familiarize yourself with him and build an altar of devotion and worship and commitment and Consecration and separation and righteousness and Holiness and commitments and giving and Evangel you'll say give it to me more I got to do more I got to be around him thy presence in thy presence is fullness of [Music] joy come on somebody acquaint now thyself acquaint now thyself familiarize yourself with him he wants to know you this all right three way ways three ways that God has revealed himself I'm going to go quick I promise number one God has revealed himself to us in his creation God has revealed himself in his creation Paul says in verse 24 God that made the world and all things therein seeing that he is Lord of Heaven and Earth dwelleth not in a temple made with hands this is what we call in theology General revelation God has made himself visible and knowable through creation just as artists reveal a part of themselves through their artwork God has disclosed himself through his creative Masterpiece in creation has anybody ever been to Smoky Mountains before anybody ever been to smoking mountains before anybody got in an airplane you get real high I like the window seat I don't get the window seat when Ashley and E travel with me because they like the window seat and I'll get I I'll I love her and I want to get to know her more I'll get hit with a cart as it goes by my elbow it's worth it to me if I get a chance I like the windows I like to go up and see the clouds and then you go up above the clouds and you get a different perspective and you see The Wonder of it all and you see the mountains and the waters and the oceans and you see oh my goodness uh Psalm 19 And1 The Heavens declare the glory of God the firmament showeth his handywork day unto Day utth speech and night unto night showeth knowledge there is no speech no language where their voice is not heard so when you're flying in an airplane or you're sailing in a boat or you're walking or hiking up the mountains the heavens declare the wonders of God in his creation he has revealed himself but creation is insufficient in knowing him more it shows his Wonders It shows his power it shows that there is something that has come from him but that is still insufficient you can't look at the mountains and you can't look at the wonders of creation and say that there is a God who loves there's a God who redeems and there's a God who judges you can't see that in creation and so you might ask this question okay if God has shown himself in creation what about the Blind and the deaf and the mute those who can experience God in his Divine wisdom he let us know that he's in control that if you can't see it taste it or hear it he has revealed himself in your conscience written upon the hearts of humanity written upon the image of God in humanity is God's self-revelation he has revealed himself in our hearts when Paul is explaining the Judgment of God on all of humanity for their sinfulness the Jews could understand yes we are under the Judgment of God because we have broken the Mosaic law but what about the Gentiles how are the Gentiles why are we also included under the Judgment of God we are without his law we don't know Moses we don't have those laws and Paul would say this unto them that you have broken the law because you show the law has been written upon your heart how can somebody break a law that they are unaware of I'm ignorant of it oh no you're not because written on the hearts of every man is the law of God you don't have to teach your toddler how to lie and you don't have to teach your toddler how to hide when they break a rule because they know written in the code of their DNA that something is vastly wrong with this Behavior because even though creation shows a Creator our conscience reveals that he has a law and the law can be broken even if you're ignorant of it has that ever happened to you you're driving down the road you go through some small town and it goes from speed limit 75 to 25 in one block and the cop pulls you over and they say you know how fast you're going like yeah I was going 75 that's what it said he said now but changed over here to 25 you're like I didn't know that I didn't see that he goes just because you're ignorant of it doesn't mean he didn't break it you got to come back and see the the lawgiver right you can break a law that you're ignorant of and so in our conscience we can break the moral law or this natural law that is in within us I'm trying to go fast I'm not trying to bore you but I want you to understand understand that God has revealed himself in creation and he has revealed himself in our conscience but those two things are insufficient we see the Wonders the Majesty The Wonder of God in creation but all we can see is the right and the wrong in our conscience that all we can see are the good and the bad and that we've broken it but I want you to know God has not left us with insufficient evidence of knowing him God has revealed himself in his word sitting upon your nightstand sitting upon your shelf is the very revelation of God now you might say I don't own a Bible I don't have any of that but you've got a phone and on your phone there are free apps all kinds of apps that you can download you are not able to escape and let me say this again I've said it before I'll say it again preaching is dangerous business preaching is dangerous for preachers but it's even more dangerous for those who hear preaching because as soon as you hear preaching you are now unable to claim ignorance there is a speed limit that is set before you and that speed limit is called the law of God when preaching Goes Forth you can no longer claim ignorance but you might sit there like a stoic and say I disagree I don't like that I'm not going to respond or you might might be like the eperience say I don't feel that in my heart of hearts and I'm just going to follow in my heart and my feelings I want you to know you will be judged by the word of God when you hear preaching but how can you hear except there be preaching faith comes by hearing and hearing comes by the word of God so the same word that judges is the same word that reveals the love of God W I've come to tell somebody he has come to reveal him the unknown God I've come to reveal him unto you come on musicians get ready the word of God 66 books Old Testament New Testament God has revealed himself and he has revealed himself with ink and paper he has revealed himself with letters words sentences phrases paragraphs pages he has revealed himself in poetry Psalms and prophecies and promises he has revealed himself in his word through judgment and also through Redemption I want you to know that God has revealed himself we are no longer ignorant of him in creation and conscience but there is a redeemer there is a Creator there is a savior that I want to tell you about the word of God has come to reveal God unto you and that's why we're afraid to open and that's why we're afraid to spend time in it but I want you to know that he has not just come to reveal himself through the word of God but he became the word of God the ultimate revelation of God is in his word but I want you to know the penultimate ultimate revelation of God is not just on a page it's in a person that in the beginning was the word and the Word was with God and the Word was God the same was in the beginning with God and the word became flesh and dwelt Among Us the logos the word the written revelation of God the creator of the heavens and the Earth he who has created the human being those who are the image bearers of God he has come to reveal himself not just on a page but here in a person named Jesus Christ thank you for that round of applause there I'm talking to you about Jesus Christ he has come to reveal himself unto you and I just can't sit there and listen to a lecture I've come to declare him unto you today that the god of creation has revealed himself in a person stand to your feet I am inadequate as you can see I am inadequate to declare him unto you that's how great he is that's how marvelous he is he is the word made flesh Paul would say to the to the Colossians he is the image of the invisible ible God no man has seen God at any time but the Son of God has revealed him unto us Jesus said this when you've seen me you've seen the father and Paul would say in him dwells all the foess of the godhead bodily that means to tell me it was not God the son who came it was God who came I feel the Holy Ghost right now it's not some second person in some madeup Trinity I'm telling you God himself he is the express image of the invisible God that in him dwells not a third not a fourth not half all the fullness of the godhead every attribute all his power all of his characteristics dwell in him him I declare unto you and when they heard this Paul preached creation to consummation didn't God has created and then he said by this man he is going to judge so he is Creator and he is Judge but at the center of his sermon was Resurrection whom he has raised from the dead the center of God's Plan of Redemption is the resurrection of Jesus Christ we listen to me now we can't just keep the resurrection bound to Easter in April or March whenever it falls you know what they preach in the books of in the book of Acts over and over and over and over and over again you know what got them in trouble everywhere that they preach they preach the resurrection of Jesus Christ because this is the center showing that yes through the resurrection he has power over sin and death and this God that you think is somewhere some he's in some far off Galaxy the unknown God Paul says he's present and he's in control and not only is he in control control right now he's in control of your future but if he has power over death I have nothing to fear I don't have to fear death because he has power over death but what I do have to fear is if I refuse it you see they thought they were bringing Paul to trial and Paul walked up to Mars Hill and put them all on trial they thought they were going to trap Paul in his speech they thought that they were going to judge him right there and Paul walks up there and preaches the gospel and he puts them on notice you you are under the Judgment of God God winked at your ignorant worship for a Time but now he commands all men to repent not come shake a preacher's hand not fill out some card not click a box on an app somewhere not make a phone call and talk to some representative give him your name you just accepted Jesus as your personal savior that's not what he says he says to repent turn from your idolatry turn from your ignorance and Proclaim him as Lord in your life brothers and sisters I'm telling you of the unknown God today we've got one we got a miracle I don't know if you know this today it happens every every time we baptize somebody it's a miracle we got a real miracle today we got a real miracle today because somebody realizes even in their youth I've got to be baptized hold on oh they're just they're just uh it's just emotionalism you're just trying to you're just trying to get to their emotions so they'll respond to that and get baptized yes exactly we are we're trying to provoke you to realize just as Paul did you need to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your s of your [Music] sins um hold on hold on now I don't this is too much emotionalism there's too much feeling going on around here I'm just going to stand here I want you to try to con convince me that I've got to be baptized all right Acts chapter number two you must repent that was to the Jews Acts chapter number 8 they were baptized in the name of Jesus Christ that was Samaritans that was half Jew half Gentile Acts chapter number 10 it was all Gentiles he said when they heard them speak with tongues he they said he commanded them what's the word command me it's not giving them a choice it's not giving them an option you are commanded to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins okay that was great you got three groups of people where do I fit in I'm a religious person and all I've got's tradition let me go to Acts chapter number 19 where Paul finds John the the Baptist disciples he says have you received the Holy Ghost since you first believed you're meaning to tell me y'all hearing me right now you're mean to tell me I don't automatically receive the spirit when I believe that's exactly what Paul is saying we don't know whether there' be any Holy Ghost he said okay if you had got the Holy Ghost yet how were you baptized and if baptism doesn't matter and how you're baptized doesn't matter why would Paul ask that question and they say we were baptized under John's repentance under under John's baptism which was for repentance he said' that's great but you got to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ so in Acts 2 we got Jews acts 8 we got Samaritans acts 10 we got Gentiles and Acts 19 we got good Baptist folk getting baptized in the name of Jesus Christ I want you to know who the known God is today and it is Jesus Christ and if you want to know him you got to believe on him you got to repent of your sins and you can receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost would you lift up your hands all over the sanctuary come on I want you to pray I wonder if somebody would leave the confines of their Pew and say I want to know him come on I want to know him I want to know him I want to know him more I want to know Jesus I want to know him draw nigh under him and He will draw nigh unto you if you will draw nigh unto him he will reveal himself unto you come on lift up your heart lift up your voice the unknown God on him I Proclaim and declare unto you today that he wants to show himself he wants to reveal himself unto [Music] you
