Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

Submit yourselves therefore to God

  • The teacher announces one combined subject on one head text: the protection of submission and the consequence of rebellion are two poles of a single lesson, not two sermons.
  • The head text is read entire: submit yourselves therefore to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
  • Submission is framed as the place of safety God designed for his people, not as weakness or defeat.

Scriptures: James 4:7

Submission in the garden

  • God forms man, breathes life into him and plants him in the garden with the tree of life and the tree of knowledge set before him.
  • The command is read with its consequence, re-designated expressly at verse 15: of one tree man must not eat, for in the day he eats he will surely die.
  • The woman is given as a help meet for the man: order, covering and companionship stand in creation before the fall is ever reached.

Scriptures: Genesis 2:7-9; Genesis 2:15-17; Genesis 2:18-25

The fall, and rebellion running downhill

  • The serpent questions God’s word, the boundary is refused, and the first pair hide from the presence they once walked in.
  • Rebellion does not stay with the one who commits it: in the next generation Cain’s offering is refused and his brother’s blood is shed.
  • What begins as resistance to God’s word ends, one generation on, in violence against a brother.

Scriptures: Genesis 3:1-8; Genesis 4:1-8

The mind of Christ

  • The Philippian read begins at 1:27: one spirit, one mind, striving together for the faith of the gospel, unafraid of adversaries.
  • Christ is set forth as the pattern of submission: in the form of God, he humbled himself and became obedient unto death.

Scriptures: Philippians 1:27-30; Philippians 2:1-8

Mutual submission in the house

  • Children are addressed first: obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
  • Fathers are charged not to provoke their children to wrath; servants to obey as unto Christ; masters to forbear threatening, knowing they have a master in heaven too.
  • Wives and husbands are brought under the same pattern: submission, and a husband’s love patterned on Christ giving himself for the church.
  • The survey lands on its head: submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

Scriptures: Ephesians 6:1; Ephesians 6:4; Ephesians 6:5; Ephesians 6:9; Ephesians 5:22; Ephesians 5:25; Ephesians 5:21

Saul: rebellion is as witchcraft

  • Saul is sent against Amalek and spares the king and the best of the spoil that he was commanded to destroy.
  • Confronted, Saul insists he has performed the commandment and lays the sparing on the people; Samuel answers that obedience is better than sacrifice.
  • The verdict is designated afresh and delivered: rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness as iniquity and idolatry.
  • The consequence reaches Saul’s end on Mount Gilboa, reported to David by the Amalekite who claimed the kill.

Scriptures: 1 Samuel 15:1-9; 1 Samuel 15:13-21; 1 Samuel 15:23; 2 Samuel 1:6-8

David’s honesty after failure

  • David’s fall with Bathsheba and Nathan’s confrontation are retold as narrative; no text is designated or delivered in the movement, and it carries no citation act.
  • The contrast with Saul is the point: confronted, David does not excuse himself but confesses, and honesty before God is where restoration begins.

Jonah: rebellion answered with mercy

  • Nineveh repents at the preaching and God turns from the destruction he had said he would do.
  • Jonah is displeased and angry that the city he ran from has been spared.
  • His prayer asks God to take his life; the lesson holds the prophet’s rebellion up against the mercy he himself had received.

Scriptures: Jonah 3:10; Jonah 4:1; Jonah 4:3

Spirits of rebellion, and the decision to submit

  • When the Spirit of the Lord departs from Saul, an evil spirit troubles him.
  • The spirit returns on the raging king as David plays, and again as Saul sits with a javelin in his hand.
  • The same spirit meets Saul’s messengers on the road, and then Saul himself, and all of them prophesy instead of seizing David.
  • The lesson closes on the standing charge to obey those who watch for your souls, and on the hearer’s own decision to live submitted.

Scriptures: 1 Samuel 16:14; 1 Samuel 18:10; 1 Samuel 19:9; 1 Samuel 19:20; Hebrews 13:17

aware of of what's going on tonight and the the sports world with the world series going on as long as that game's still going on by 10 30 i think you might be all right tonight so we'll be good james four and seven says submit yourselves therefore to god resist the devil and he will flee from you such a short scripture such a simple scripture to understand but so much power lies in this scripture if we can say that i can do all things through christ would strengthen me then we could say we can say that our only strength comes from jesus christ you will be weak if you're not in jesus christ we can say the opposite in this scripture it's the same it's it's true we can say the opposite if we're not submitted to god then we have no power to resist the devil and the devil will not flee from us and so tonight i want to teach on something that's very dear to my heart because i never want to be a young person who is not submitted to god i want to teach for just a few short moments with the help of the lord on the protection of submission and the consequence of rebellion there is so much protection when we are submitted to god when we are submitted to him his plans and his will and even his man we find ourselves being protected protected from the winds and and the spirits of the devil we find ourselves in such tremendous protection but then we know there's a quite the opposite there's a quite opposite end of the spectrum when we find ourselves in rebellion we found ourself in consequence of rebellion if we would let's put our bibles down and let's ask god to open our hearts tonight to receive the word of the lord god we thank you for this day we thank you for the opportunity god to come before such a great wonderful group of people god i thank you for this opportunity you have given me tonight god to teach the greatest group of people in all the world lord i ask tonight as we open up our bibles let us open up our hearts and let your spirit god in your word just come infiltrate our hearts tonight on this subject of submission god i want to be in in the protection of submission but god i definitely don't want to be in the side of the consequence of rebellion god i don't want any ounce of rebellion in my life lord if i could lord i want to find myself submitted to you i want to find myself submitted to your ways to your will to your plan to your word and i want to be submitted to your man god i want to be submitted to the man of god because there's so much protection in that and we do everything in your name in jesus name everyone said in jesus name in jesus name amen you may be seated one thing i forgot to announce i know they're announcing this in adultes upstairs but if there's any alumni soccer soccer players in the house you might be old and out of shape it hurts to move now but we're going to give you an opportunity tomorrow night at five o'clock to relive some of your glory days with the alumni soccer game and it's going to be a great time it goes right along with our family weekend as our our sports season at apostol christian academy is coming to a close uh our girls play just tremendous they played tremendously well today in their season uh ending tournaments and the soccer season will end next week but five o'clock tomorrow that'll be here at the field and they're just going to be a wonderful time to see a bunch of old guys get hurt probably in the first five minutes so come see that and support our aca boys soccer team it's gonna be a wonderful time tomorrow night at five o'clock the submission the protection of submission and the consequence of rebellion we are special because we are made in the image of god what makes man so special to god's eyes and what makes us different from anything that god created was the fact that we have the choice and we have free will everything god creates i've said this before and this is what i want to teach on tonight everything that god has created the purpose of the creation is to be submitted back to god god's creation its purpose is to be submitted back to its creator and what makes us special what makes us different from any other thing that god has created is the fact that we have the choice to submit and we have a spirit of free will that's what makes us special tonight about submission animals have to do the same thing over and over again because they have no free will they have no choice just the fact that you chose tonight to come to the house of the lord in god's eyes that is so special because you're submitted to him by honoring his house it says so much about a person because we have the choice to submit of the choice not to submit and of course we know there are great benefits of submitting to god and there are great great consequences of living in the opposite of submission which is rebellion i hope to prove tonight that there is a protection we find when we are submitted to god when we are submitted to the things of god when we are submitted to his man but also there's no great area there is either tremendous or complete submission or it's rebellion and there's consequences when we find ourself in rebellion genesis 2 and 7. i hope to read a lot of scripture tonight let the word speak for itself genesis 2 and 7 says and the lord god for man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul and the lord god planted a garden eastward in eden and there he put the man who he had formed and out of the ground man out of the ground made the lord god to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for and good for food the tree of life also in the midst of the garden and the tree of knowledge of good and evil we see what god has created for man to survive we see that god has given everything that man needs to survive and then verse number 15 and the lord's and the lord god took the man and put him into the garden of eden to dress it and to keep it and the lord god commanded the man saying of every tree of the garden now mayest freely eat but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil thou shalt not eat of it for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die here we see the rule that adam is to submit to here we see god's command that adam is to live by and of course god gives this rule but he also gives adam the thing that he would protect him from if he lives submitted to the rule if he lives submitted to god's commandment the first command that god gave man not to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil if you would live submitted to that rule god says that you will have life because he says the day that you eatest of it the day that thou partake of this thing that i told you not to partake of that day thou shalt surely die adam sees here the first lesson that he learns when he becomes a living soul when god breathes the the breath of life into adam the first lesson that he learns is to be submitted to the command of god to listen and to obey god's voice and that is the same command that is the same lesson that we learn when we are born spiritually that the greatest thing we can learn and the greatest lesson and the first lesson we can learn is there is power in being submitted to god to being submitted to the things of god there is power and there is protection in being submitted that is the first lesson we learn spiritually it's also the first lesson that adam learns here when he has the breath of life enter into him here we have the commandment from god to adam about not eating of the tree of knowledge of good and evil and there is protection if he lives according to the rule when you obey this one simple rule adam you will have life for as long as you obey that's as long as you have life but the moment that you step into rebellion that's the day that thou shalt surely die verse 18 says in the lord god said it is not good that the man should be alone and i will make him a help meet for him and out of the ground the lord god formed every beast of the field every fowl of the air and brought them unto adam to see what he would call them whatsoever adam called every living creature that was the name thereof and adam gave names to all the cattle and to the fowl of the air and to every beast of the field but for adam there was not a help meet for him and the lord's god caused a deep sleep to fall upon adam and he slept and he took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh instead thereof and the rib which the lord god taken from the man made a woman and brought her unto the man and adam said this is now bones of my bones and flesh of my flesh she shall be called woman because she was taken out of the man therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother and shall cleave unto his wife and they shall be one flesh and they were both naked the man and his wife and were not ashamed we see here that adam and eve were living in subjection they were living submitted to god in the bible and other scriptures it talks about that not only they didn't walk around naked but they walked around clothed with the glory of god they walked around there was this light there was this light that covered them it was the glory that covered them the glory of god was all around them why because they were living submitted and subjected to god god put something around them he put this thing around and that would cover them they put this just this light if you would look at adam and eve when they were in the garden living right and living submitted to god they had this thing about them this this this glory of god that clothed them they walked with god this when they lived they lived in some in submission to the rule one rule that they lived up to when they lived in submission to that rule they got to walk with god they got to walk with him in the cool of the day the bible says that he would come down and he would begin to talk with him anything they wanted to know he would answer every question they had why because they were submitted to him they were submitted to him they had anything they they literally got to walk with god because they were submitted to him submission opens up the channel for our relationship with god submission opens up the channel for our relationship with god if you want to know god if you want to go deeper with god the more you need to find yourself submitted to the things of god the more i can get in this word and say god i submit to your word that opens up the channel of relationship god can speak to us god when we go down in prayer if we find ourselves submitted to everything god wants us to be submitted to that's that channel that is open up for our relationship to thrive with god genesis 3 and 1 we know the story very well now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the lord god had made and he said unto the woman yea hath god said ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden this is the same old devil that we face because the devil likes to get you focused on the things that you cannot do he likes to paint god as a unfair father that would keep things from his children he likes to thank god as someone that is keeping you from something you're you're missing out church because you're not allowed to do this you are you're missing out on all the fun eve god said you can't eat of every tree no god said you couldn't eat of one tree and god god is not keeping adam and eve from anything god is protecting adam and eve from anything from everything it's the big difference god would never keep uh god would never want his children to do things that he knows would harm them the big difference here satan says that god is keeping you from something no my god protects his children from things he doesn't want to face he knew what sin would bring to man he knew what sin would do to someone's life he knew that it would cut them off from their relationship with god and he said i'm not going to keep you from it i'm going to protect you from it i'm going to protect you from the consequence of sin i'm going to protect you from the consequence of rebellion you don't want to know what you would look like if you stepped outside of the submission plan of god god is a good father he doesn't keep things from us he is a good father he protects us from things he protects this church from spirits that he don't want you to be a part of he protects us from a life full of shame and misery he even though it's some rules even some things we have to follow god is protecting us from a life full of sin he knows what sin will do he knows the death that sin will bring but god is protecting us from it he says he shall not eat of every tree gets us to focus on we can't do and the woman said in the serpent we may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden when you are living in submission to god he likes to keep you satan likes to talk to you about the things you can't do verse number 3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden god has said ye shall not eat of it neither shall you touch it lest ye die i think there's a couple points here that that that will teach us some things on submission first of all this is eve speaking to the serpent if you go back and the reason i read the entirety of the portion of scripture if you go back god is speaking to adam about not touching or not eating of the tree but then we see here that eve is being tempted and she says we do not eat of that tree which tells me that we're held to a standard even though if we don't hear it from god himself even though if we don't hear directly from god about not eating of the tree god has spoke to the person that we are submitted to to teach us you don't eat of the tree so a lot of times i i hear it i i hear it often times well god didn't speak that to me well god didn't speak to eve about not eating the tree either he spoke to the person that he that she was submitted to and that person taught eve the second thing i see here is that eve says that no we're not supposed to eat of it and we're not supposed to touch it god never spoke that i think personally now there's there's some people there's commentators i've read that have a a positive view of this and they have a negative view of this i choose to think that adam when he was teaching his wife when he was teaching the person that was submitted to him he said eve god has spoke to me and god has said the rule for us to live in submitting to him if we live in him if we live submitted to him we will not eat of this tree but i like how adam takes it a step further he says we're going to set a standard we'll instead set a pastoral standard let's call it that that we're not going to touch it it's not what god says but we're going to go a little bit further adam was a smart guy because he said if we don't touch it we're never not going to eat of it we can't eat of it we got to touch it first so eve or adam sets this pastoral standard this leadership standard of this is where god's line is this is where we're going to draw the line because there's going to be times where we're going to be tempted to break our own rules and as long as we don't go and we don't break that leadership standard that pastoral standard we'll call it then we definitely won't break god's commandments i think it would have been smart to eve to have a personal standard maybe if she said maybe she said to herself hey i can't eat of it my my my leader adam whom i'm submitted to says i can't touch it you find this scripture that they're having this conversation close to the tree if he's mentioning the tree and she's close enough to touch it a good standard a good personal standard would have been i'm not going around it because that's the power of being a submitted person to god if we find ourselves we know what the bible says and i'm so thankful that we have a pastor who has set the line a little bit further but one of the most important standards you could ever have is a personal standard because you struggle with things i don't struggle with and i struggle with things that you don't struggle with and if we have good personal standards we will never break god's commandments we will never break our leadership commandments we will never break out of that submission to god such a powerful lesson i think we learn here with it's the very first people in the bible the first lesson that they learned was there's there is protection and submission and then they're going to find out with a harsh reality what the consequence of rebellion will not only do to them but it will do to their children submission is a powerful thing verse number 4 says and the serpent said unto the woman ye shall not surely die for god doth know that in the day that ye eat thereof then your eyes shall be opened then you shall be his gods knowing good and evil and when the woman saw that the tree was good for food that it was pleasant to the eyes pleasant to the eyes it was good for something sin was fruitful it was joyful for a season and the tree was be desired to make one wise she took the fruit thereof and did he and also gave unto her husband and he did eat and the eyes of them were both open and they knew that they were naked they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons notice with me they knew that they were naked that glory of god that clothed them that glory of god that covered them that protection that they were under was no longer there they began to sow fig leaves together and made themselves apron now many things here that eve was held to the same standard that adam was i know i mentioned it but we see here that eve had a consequence even though she didn't hear it directly from god i'm so thankful that god has given us a great pastor i'm so thankful that even though he's not here tonight i want to thank god for him not asking for brownie points tonight i want to thank god for a pastor who cares about the sheep in his flock i want to thank god that god has given us a man of god with convictions that says hey you don't need to go here church you don't need to stay out in this late church because no good things happen after this time or no good things happen after this place is our pastor keeping us from things absolutely not but our pastor knows that he can protect us from some things our church don't have to face certain things because we've got some protection because there's power in our submission amen and it's so easy to submit to someone who's submitted to someone else it's so easy to find yourself submitted to a man of god because he's submitted to a man of god i'm getting a little ahead of myself and we'll come back to that we'll come back to that point later amen and they heard the voice of the lord god walking in the garden in the cool of the day just like the usual time god come down to talk to adam and eve to spend a little bit of time with his creation to spend a little time that that creation had a purpose of submitting to its creator but something was different it made god really get out of his comfort zone and god had to ask a question the first question that god had asked was adam where are you and they'd god ask a question i think that's very interesting but god to this point has made statements of let there be light and let there be this let there be man let there be woman let there be animals let there be a sky let there be an ocean now he asked a question what is this ques why did god have to ask a question because sin was present that couple that had themselves in the submission of god submitting to that rule that there was protection in but when they walked out of submission they walked out of that protection that god had placed them under now that relationship has been cut off that channel that of relationship through submission that they can learn from god they could talk to him at a personal level they can get closer to him because they were submitted to him now they find themselves and god had to has to ask where they are when they removed themselves from the channel that submission had opened up they could no longer have a relationship with god if i ask you to to name the worst sin that you could think of if i could ask you right now it's what i do in my bible class i have them raise their hands and i got a bunch of great weird answers when i asked this question and i had to channel some of them like all right let's let's keep that one to ourselves if i would ask you tonight what's the worst sin you could think of i'm sure i would hear something like murder out here i'm sure i would see hear something like rape or something like that but what brought sin upon all of us what brought the consequence of rebellion upon all of us the rest of the humans that would ever walk the face of this earth while they would face sin was not really because of a great sin such as murder or rape or something we think of it was simply somebody got out of being submitted to god that is one of the greatest sins that we could ever commit is to walk out of submission to god walk out of submission to a man of god walk out of submission eating a fruit that god tells me not to eat is really not a bad sin in my fleshly opinion but it's the fact that he broke god's commandment it's the fact that he removed himself she removed herself out of the channel of relationship with god and we see here that there is going to be some consequences there's going to be some consequences not only they will face but their family is going to face genesis 4 and 1 and adam and eve adam knew eve his wife and she conceived and there came and said i have gotten a man from the lord and she bear his brother abel and abel was a keeper of the sheep but cain was the tiller of the ground and in the process of time it came to pass that came brought a fruit of the ground which keep in mind i didn't realize this until uh when through study that god had cursed the ground and that's probably the reason that that uh god didn't accept cain's offering because it was from the ground he brought up the fruit of the ground an offering unto the lord and abel he also brought of the first things of his flock and of the fat thereof and the lord had respect and to abel and to his offering but unto cain and to his offering he had not respect and cain was very roth and his countenance fell submission submission or the lack of submission seems to have a way from flowing down from generation to generation it seems to have a way and i know there are some awesome exclusions of this of people who don't have parents in church they find themselves submitting to god and i think that's so wonderful and awesome but a good majority of the time submission or the lack of submission has its way of flowing down from generation to generation and the lord god said in the came why out thou why art thou wroth and why is thy countenance fallen if thou doest well shall not be accepted if thou not does not well sin lieth out the door god wanted the offering to be of blood and if you obey god you would be accepted if you submitted to god's way of giving an offering your offering would be accepted and you do well but if you do not well then sin lies at the door if you do not submit to exactly what god wants then sin lies at your door cain it's that simple if you are obedient to god i know you you you heard stories you ask why you face you face certain things why is there sin why mom and dad you told us of the place of perfection you told us of the place where you got to walk with god and and talk with him on a personal level now why am i why am i facing some stuff that i'm facing why is there this thing called sin why are we not in that beautiful garden of eden that you tell us stories about it's all about submission it's all about rebelling against god sin lies at your door if you don't give god exactly what he wants and we know the story verse number eight and cain talked with his brother abel and it came to pass where they were in the field that cain rose up against abel his brother and slew him this sin was a product of not submitting to god and giving him exactly what he wants this is the product the sin of murdering a brother is the fact that one was in rebellion and one was in submission an angry brother a angry rebellious brother did not see the benefits of submitting to god he didn't see the benefits of giving god exactly what's he what he wants but yet he is angry he takes it into his own hands instead of giving god another offering of submission getting pride out of the way even though he was mad because his offering wasn't accepted it was as easy as just giving god another offering but yet he slew the person that was in submission this is all the product of what submitting or rebelling against god will do to a family and i'm so thankful that i am in a family that i have watched my parents for years submit to their man of god sometimes we've had some conversations where dad said hey we're going to stop this and i'm going to call my pastor and i i thought surely this is the answer we're going to get and we've made plans to do this and it was just that that voice of bishop mccool that would speak to my father which my dad was submitted to him and is submitted to him he would come back to the family and said hey we're not going to do that what seemed as unfair what seemed as what is he keeping us from what or what why does he not want us to do this well bishop mccool has something that we didn't have in our family and that was years of experience years of of seeing people walk aways years of people doing certain things and it not going their way in a family led by a father and a mother chose to submit and i pray that that does flow from generation to generation we'll skip to the new testament in philippians 2 and 1 2 and 1. verse number 1 says if there be therefore any consolation in christ now the reason i've read that there is and i don't think it's praise god it's not on the screen but in certain translations there be would be in parentheses as if it was added after the fact i i don't know if this is the case i've read this from many uh valid sources so i'll choose i want to believe that and it kind of makes sense if there be therefore any consolation in christ and and some translations even begin this verse with therefore it just takes all all that out in in two so if we would go on that therefore he paul is trying to build on something and so he is trying to build on what is found in philippians 1 20 uh 127. so let's start at verses 127. there's a reason i went through all that mumbo jumbo now verse chapter 1 verse 27 only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of christ that whether i come and see you or else be absent i may hear of your affairs that ye stand fast in one spirit with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel and in nothing terrified by your adversaries which is to them an evident token of perdition but to you of salvation and that of god verse 29 for unto you it is given in the behalf of christ not only to believe on him but also to suffer for his sake having this having the same conflict which he saw in me and now here to be in me now paul is telling us here paul is telling the philippian church how to stand strong for the lord against external conflicts that's why that's why the first part of chapter two is referring back to these external conflicts he's trying to build on this now he goes from external conflicts how to solve it to internal conflicts in verse number one of chapter two if there be therefore any consolation in christ any comfort of love any fellowship of the spirit any uh if any bowels and mercies fulfill you my joy that ye be like-minded having the same love being of one accord and one mind let nothing be done through strife or vainglory but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves look not every man on his own things but every man also on the things of others paul is telling us how to deal with external conflicts in the previous chapter and now he's talking about internal conflicts this is how you so you sort any conflict anything that you face any conflict that you come up against if it's externally or internally if it would be in the church out of the church if it would be spiritually or non-spiritual this is how you you saw the conflict let this mind be in you which was also in christ jesus who being in the form of god thought it not robbery to be equal with god but made himself of no reputation and took upon him the form of a servant and was made in the likeness of men and being found in fashion as a man he humbled himself and became obedient unto death even the death of the cross now jesus the divinity of jesus is so strong in this passage but there's two points here the the divinity of jesus but also a point is is not necessarily his divinity but it's what he did with his power for our sake this is how you solve every bit of conflict you humble yourself and you become obedient if it's internal conflict you humble yourself and submit if it's external conflict outside the church you humble yourself and submit submission has a way of solving any sort of conflict that a child of god would face submission solves everything even though jesus had all power he was obedient even though jesus had all authority he was still submitted and that's the lesson we learned how can we solve any church conflict it could be solved through submission how do we solve any conflict or maybe on a job it could be solved through submission how do we solve every family problem it could be solved through submission how do we solve every sin problem it's solved through submission it's the mind of jesus christ how do we become in one mind and one accord like the scripture says we humble ourself and we submit we humble ourself and become obedient because it's power that's power to solve the conflict we become like jesus we have the mind of jesus christ even though jesus had all power he became as a servant he became obedient even though he had all authority he was still submitted i think that's powerful that the man who who could do absolutely anything he wanted anything that he spoke could come to pass was a submitted man how can you solve any bit of conflict in a family in a church you having church problems teach on submission you having you're having family problems sit your family down and teach them about submission submission solves just about everything a sin problem submit yourselves to god you're having attacks from satan our opening scripture said submit yourself to god and you'll have the power to resist the devil and he will flee from you how will he flee from you there is a protection that a child of god is in when they are submitted when you find yourself submitted to a man of god you're listening for his voice he can correct you he can point that finger in your face and tell you what you don't want to hear and the moment that you are submitted is the moment that you are under his covering and you're in the protection from things that satan throws at you submit yourselves to god it is that simple submit to god resist the devil and he will flee from you paul uses philippians 2 to teach us if we have the mind of christ we will live in submission but not only submission i like this next part that paul takes us to in ephesians six and one not only submission because submission sometimes we can have a have a a thought that you're supposed to be submitted to me yeah and you're supposed to be submitted to someone else it's called mutual submission paul talks about in ephesians 6 6 6-1 children obey your parents in the lord but the mutual submission is balanced with ephesians 6 and 4. fathers provoke not your children to wrath it's a beautiful picture here of if everybody submitted it works wonderfully according to god ephesians 6 and 5 addresses the servants servants be obedient to them that are your masters but masters it doesn't give you a ticket to not submit to anybody it gives you a ticket to do in ephesians 6 and 9. you masters do the same thing unto them wives ephesians 5 22 why submit yourselves unto your husbands i see a lot of husbands get in the big chest yeah you're supposed to submit to me well you've got a greater responsibility because who much has given much is required ephesians 5 25 husbands that that lovely wife is submitted to you you're supposed to love your wives even as christ loved the church that means you'd be willing to give your life for that lady who submitted to you because it's so much easier for a wife to submit to a man who loves god with all of his heart that loves god and that loves his wife and that would do anything for her it's so much more easy to submit to someone when they're submitted to someone else the reason i submit to my pastor is because he submitted to someone else the reason my wife is submitted to me is because i want to love her as christ loved the church it's a beautiful picture of mutual submission how do we have unity and becoming one of court ephesians 2 5 and 21 submitting yourselves one another in the fear of god the greatest revival that this church could experience it will happen when we get in one mind and in one accord how do we do that it's through mutual submission it's nothing more beautiful than a family to come around an altar and parents that are uh children that are submitted to parents and parents that don't provoke them to wrath and in parents that are submitted to one another that is a beautiful picture in the eyes of god because god moves through unity and where mutual submission uh where mutual submission is that's when god can move because submission opens up the relationship the channel for god to move it's a beautiful picture when a church is submitted when families are submitted when every single person has someone to submit to that's when god begins to move we we become in one mind and one accord the scripture says when there is mutual submission first samuel 15 and 1 i've said a lot about submission but then there is a consequence of rebellion there is tremendous consequence i've talked a lot about the beautiful protection of submission but then there's a consequence of rebellion verse number one says sam samuel also said unto saul the lord sent me unto thee to be king over his people over israel now therefore hearken unto the voice of the words of the lord thus saith the lord of hosts i remember that which amalek did to israel how he weighed late for him in the way when he came up from egypt now go and smite amalek and utterly destroy all that they have and spare them not but slave both man and woman infant suckling ox sheep camel and ass and saul gathered the people together and numbered them and talent two hundred thousand foot men and two ten thousand men of judah of course we see the the rule here to utterly destroy all of the amalekites god remembers what amalek did to israel and saul you are go you will go and smite amalek and utterly destroy all that they have verse number seven and saul smote the amalekites from havalan to thou come as to sure that is over against egypt and he took a gag the king of amla kites alive and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword but saul and the people spared a gag and the best of sheep and oxen and the fatlings and the lambs and all that was good and would not utterly destroy them but everything that was vile and refused that they destroyed utterly sounds to me like when eve saw the fruit that it was good for something and saul and the people thought that this could be good for something going outside of god even though god said to utterly destroy this this looks good this looks but the rest it's vile it's it's it's refused and that we're going to utterly destroy but partial obedience is still full disobedience being partially submitted is still full-fledged rebellion full-fledged rebellion first samuel 15 13 and samuel came to saul and saul said unto him blessed be thou of the lord he's put on a show when you're not submitted you got to put on the show to make everyone think that you're you've done right i have performed at the commandment of the lord and samuel said what meaneth this bleeding of the sheep in my ears why can i hear this the lowing of the oxen which i hear and saul said they have brought them from the amalekites for the people spare the best of sheep and the oxen to sacrifice unto the lord thy god and the rest we have utterly destroyed notice that saul says the people brought the best of the sheep the people brought the oxen but the rest we have utterly destroyed then samuel said unto saul stay and i will tell thee what the lord has said to me this night and he said unto him saiyan and samuel said when thou was little in thine own sight was thou not made the head of the tribes of the of israel and the lord anointed thee the king over israel and the lord sent me on a journey and said go utterly destroy the sinners the amalekites and fight against them until they be consumed where wherefore then thou this not obey the voice of the lord but this fly upon the spoil and this evil in the sight of the lord and saul said unto samuel yeah i have obeyed the voice of the lord have gone the way which the lord sent me and have brought a gag the king of the amalekites of amalek and have utterly destroyed the amalekites then saul begins to blame it on the people how they kept the sheeps and how they kept the best of the best to obey and or they wanted to sacrifice for god but then samuel says something that is so so powerful he says for rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft now we do see here that there is consequence when you don't fully submit to god saul is on saul is on the battlefield saul is on the battlefield and they're they're going hard in the war and second samuel 1 tells us the consequence of rebellion verse number six and the young man that told him sid as i happened by chance upon mount gilboa saul thought he escaped the rebellion he thought even though i fully did not submit to the to god's commandments i may have got off i may have got off but saul leaned upon his spear and lo the the chariots and the horsemen followed hard after him and when he looked behind him he saw me this is a young lad speaking and called unto me and i answered here am i and he said unto me who art thou and i answered him i am an amalekite and it come full circle for saul it come full circle the rebellion of saul it came full circle you saw you remember that little thing that you let live ag the king because you were too prideful you thought you were going to have him as a trophy to show off how powerful you were even though you partially submitted to god you remember that well here is the consequence of your rebellion you're laying there on a battlefield you're a man of war you know what death looks like and you knew it was the end of your life and you asked this young little boy that comes walking past you and on the battlefield and you ask him to run you through with the sword to finish you because you know you're not going to make it but young little boy just before you do that tell me who you are he looks at them looks at him and says i'm an amalekite come full circle saw the thing you let live in rebellion ended up coming back and finishing you off in the end any ounce of rebellion that we let live in our lives even though we think that it just may be small that we partially obeyed god we almost obeyed god we obeyed god's plan and god's man of everything but this little this little thing that little bit of rebellion comes back and finished saul it finishes saul to the death the thing that he let live in rebellion ended up killing him and finishing him in the end that's the consequence of rebellion now submission does not mean you're perfect but it does mean that you're honest it does mean that you're honest saul when he was found out of his sins he tried to point at every everybody else's sins he says well the people did this and and the people did that they you see oh you hear all those sheep yeah that's because of the people i just kept this kept this little bit of a little bit of sin i i kept this little it's just the king i kept them because you know we're going to show them off that we're we're powerful even though i didn't fully submit it's just it's just real small and when when that was true when that was true that he did not obey god's commandment fully the the man of god of course approaches him and he begins to blame other people for his sins submission does not mean you're perfect submission does not mean that you live perfect all your life but submission means when you're found out in the wrong doing in your wrongdoing of life that you are honest because david a man after his own heart after god's own heart was david perfect absolutely not he was very far from it but he was a submitted man david after he does his great sin that has labeled him we know the sin of david that he would take bathsheba away from uriah and then has uriah killed the man of god nathan comes and tells david a little story about a man who doesn't have a lot he was poor he didn't have much to his name but him and his family had a little little you lamb that they treated like one of their own he ate he ate at the table that little lamb ate at the table with the family it drank out of the same cup that that poor man drank from they and nathan's baiting david in he says man this this is all they had all they had was this little lamb and and he tells then a aside he says well and then it changes he says but a traveler come by that traveler had much riches that traveler had so much he you couldn't even you wouldn't want anything else that traveler had so much that rich man had so much he has a whole flock of lamb but that little lamb that that poor man had the rich man came the traveler came and took that lamb away because he wanted it to himself we know the story david flies off he he is so angry that this man would take something as a lamb from a poor man he is furious he said that man deserves to die and nathan said you're exactly right david and you are that man we know david was far from perfect but we do know that one of the many reasons that david was a man after god's own heart was the fact that he was submitted because when when the man of god looked at dave and said you are the man david didn't blame it on anybody else he didn't blame it on any group of people he didn't blame it on his guards or anybody that went through with this plan david didn't blame it on anyone else but he said and david said unto nathan i have sinned against the lord one of the many reasons that david is a man after god's own heart wasn't because he was perfect it was because he was honest submission doesn't mean that we're perfect but submission means that we live in honesty the reason that david could be restored was because he was honest about his sins but a person who blames sin on others cannot receive restoration submission does not mean that we're perfect submission does not mean that we live blamelessly but submission means that when we're found out of the wrong doing in our life that we would not blame it on anyone else but we would be honest that we have sinned we know the story switching gears here we know the story of jonah jonah was called to go preach a mighty revival in nineveh and we know that he would not do that he he goes and he tries to to board a boat and and god sends and prepares a great fish and and after god finally gets jonah to where he wants him to be preaching to nineveh a great revival of repentance came to nineveh that whole city was shaken from its foundation it was shaken every single person every servant every every high up person in nineveh repented every uh the king would put on sackcloth and ashes because he was in repentance just tremendous results that we see here from jonah in nineveh but i have to say that jonah is not a submitted person even though he saw the mercies of god he still was not submitted we see jonah after this whole revival this city that has changed from his preaching you'd think he'd be on cloud nine because he he he should have been he should have drowned and that he should have been spit up that fish he didn't deserve to have another opportunity to to fully obey god but jonah four and one says but it displeased jonah exceedingly and he was angry that verse begins with but it displeased jonah what what displeased jonah what displeased jonah we have to go to jonah three and ten and god saw the very last the very last verse of chapter 3 and god saw their works that they turned from their evil way and god repented of the evil that he said that that he would do unto them and he did it not when you are not submitted you begin to judge on who gets mercy and grace and who does not jonah does not is not submitted he didn't deserve grace and mercy but yet he's not submitted and he tries to look at someone else and say they don't deserve grace and mercy when we're not submitted we begin to to judge who god gives mercy to and who god gives grace to when we're not submitted but it displeased jonah it displeased jonah that god gave them mercy but verse number three of chapter four now therefore now oh lord take i beseech thee my life from me for it's better to die than to live what in the world is happening to you jonah you've seen the hand in the mercy of god in your life by giving you another chance but now you're not you find yourself not submitted you find yourself suicidal laying there in a suicidal state he is su he is suicidal and as i begin to read this jonah has a suicidal spirit because he's not submitted to god and that old scripture in first samuel 15 23 came to my mind it was almost like god flipped a light switch off in my mind he says says in first samuel 15 23 for rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft and i said what what what does this mean i thought witchcraft was doing spells and doing chants and trying to to to to tap into the demonic world and it all comes down to if you are in rebellion you are opening up yourselves the spirits that god does not want you to face you are opening and i know please hear me church i know that that that fear and anxiety and all those things are real things i please please please don't misunderstand me but it was almost as god was speaking to me that we face a lot of things that god does not intend us to face because we are in rebellion rebellion you open yourself up to spirits that god does not want you to face i can prove it to you first samuel 16 14 but the spirit of the lord departed from saul and an evil spirit a spirit from the lord troubled him verse 23 and it came to pass when the evil spirit from god was upon saul first samuel 18 and 10 and it came to pass on the moral that an evil spirit from god came upon saul verse chapter 19 verse 9 and the evil spirit from the lord was upon saul verse 20 and saul sent messengers to david when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying and samuel standing as appointed over them the spirit of god was on the messengers of saul and they prophesy i know there's real battles i know there's real batters battles of fear and all those things please don't please don't understand what i'm saying but i do think some things that we face could all be solved with being submitted i do think that we could be our battles could be solved a lot of times if we find ourselves fully submitted to god because there is a protection when we are submitted to god there is a covering when we are submitted to god we don't have to face certain things if we're submitted to god we don't have to face certain battles if we are in submission we see here that jonah is suicidal we see here that sp saul has an evil spirit haunting him and and try and tormenting him and it's no wonder that prodigals that have come back to this church have made it known that they begin to battle fear they begin to battle the spirit of fear in their life they begin to be tormented they they couldn't be home alone because they were just fearful what was that that was the product of rebellion you have taken yourself out of the protection of the submission to god god does not want us to face certain spirits god doesn't want us to be tormented by spirits of the devil and that's why james 4 7 says submit yourself to god find yourself in the protection find yourself underneath the covering because you can resist the devil and he will flee from you if you submit to god's plan if you submit to god's will if you submit to god's uh a man you will be in the protection of submission your family won't have to face certain things if you are submitted you won't have to face certain spirits that that cause that are that come from a rebellion if you are submitted i've dealt with with certain young people not from this church but just knowing and having conversations with them and they begin to talk about how they just begin to battle these certain spirits that come on them at times certain spirits of of fear and certain spirits of suicide and depression and all these thoughts begin to go through their mind and it can go back with one simple thing are you submitted a young person or or maybe someone who has found himself walking away from god and you begin to be tormented with all these evil spirits it comes down to rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft you begin to open yourself up and you're facing a lot of things that god doesn't want you to face because you're outside of the protection of submission i know some battles i know some adults can you can face some things like that and you're perfectly living right but the reason that people walk away from god and they begin to be tormented by some things is because they have taken themselves out of the submission plan of god but the great thing about that is if you find yourself facing those things because you've removed yourself out of the the relationship the protection of god it's as easy as tonight you walking right back in and making a decision that i'm going to submit to god it's as easy if you're facing those battles it's as easy as tonight you making a decision that you're going to submit to god whatever that bible tells you to do you're going to do it whatever that man tells you to do that stands behind the pulpit you're going to do it because they're you're covering they're your protection they're keeping spirits away from you they're keeping tormented things away from your mind they're keeping spirits away from your children they're keeping spirits away from your family because you're in submission you're in submission it's that simple submission is our protection you'd be so kind to stand with me james four and seven james let's go to hebrews 13 and 17 hebrews 13 and 17 says and obey them that have the rule over you and submit yourselves for at four they watch for your souls as they must give an account that they do it with joy and not with grief for that is unprofitable for you i looked at this word for submit this word here i figured it would be right along with the other words that are used for submission submit to submit but this is the only time in the original text that we see this word i thought that was very interesting i don't know exactly the reason but i do see some part of it in the definition for to submit to submit in this scripture means this to resist no longer to give way and to yield submission is as easy as making a decision to resist no longer that you're not resisting those things of god that you're not resisting those things that you see you need to submit to submission you don't have to join a class you don't have to you don't have to join a a reconstructive class to reconstruct your life no it's as easy as resisting no longer it's as easy if you facing these things that we saw through scripture about saul and about jonah the protection that we find ourselves in if we make a decision tonight to resist no longer if we make a decision tonight to no longer resist but to give way through submission here with the last 30 seconds until nine o'clock i wonder if we can just thank god that we are submitted i wonder if we can thank god for the submission plan of our lives would we thank god for his word well let's thank god for his man that he has placed over our lives this message of submission and the protection of submission let's thank god for it lord i thank you tonight for submission god i thank you for that protection that we find when we are submitted yeah i don't want to be a man that is submitted to my pastor god i don't want my family to have to face things because i'm not a submitted man god touched my family tonight that we are submitted oh god i want to be submitted to your will to your way to your plan and to your man o god i pray tonight for every person in the sound of my voice that is being tormented with things that are all caused from the lack of submission god i pray tonight they would resist no longer that they would find themselves being in protection of submission i promised them tonight through the word of god that if they would make their mind to uh submit if they would make their mind to resist no longer resist no longer jonah resist no longer saul even though you've made plenty of mistakes it's as simple as walking back into submission tonight make up your mind prodigal that you're being tormented with things of this world make up your mind that you're being fought from the adversary if you resist no longer if you submit to god the devil will have to flee from you if resisted because there's so much protection and submission one more time let's lift our hands god we thank you for tonight i thank you for the wonderful presence that i feel i thank you for god's submission lord i want to be a man who's found submitted to you god i want to be a man who's in that protection god i want my wife to have a covering from being submit a submitted lord i want to have a covering over my life lord because there's protection and submission god i don't want my family to face things and it's the product of me not submitting lord i said you would help us i'm thankful for a church who submits to their man i'm thankful that uh for a church that submits to their man of god and and the will of god and the plan of god i'm so thankful that we can we submit to the the pastoral leadership i'm so thankful for a church that submits to the rule that the pastor has placed over them not to keep them from things but to protect them from things i'm so thankful for things that you you don't you don't keep me from but you protect me from god let me have a positive attitude about submission and do everything in your name in jesus name someone say in jesus name in jesus name thank you so much for listening to the word of the lord tonight don't forget all the announcements of the great family weekend bring somebody with you sunday morning god bless you we look forward to seeing you there
