Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

Session Four: Burnout

  • The series recapped while the handouts go out: session one, cynicism; session two, compromise; last week, pride — and tonight, session four, burnout, from the material the class is reading.
  • The book's author pastors a church in Toronto, Canada, and gives his personal testimony: he was still praying, still going to church, still preaching, but he could no longer feel the word that he was preaching; in 30 days of sabbatical he slept an average of 12 hours a day and realized he had released all of his good into people and was left barren and by himself.
  • The teacher is honest with the class: I have faced this mountain before, and if I had known at the time that it was burnout, I probably would have handled things a bit different. It doesn't mean you're a terrible, horrible person if you burn out; it means you are human and life happened.

God Is Our Refuge And Strength

  • He takes the class to the word: Psalm chapter 46, verse 1, read out loud together — God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
  • Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof.
  • You can burn out on little things — a favorite coffee, peanut butter and jelly — and all that means is you tire of it and want a change; but in the battle of life, burnout is when things no longer have the same meaning and value and purpose and passion, and your emotional tank is dried up.

Scriptures: Psalm 46:1-3

Eleven Warning Signs

  • Number one, your passion fades: what drove you into that Sunday school classroom, what made you desire the presence of God, becomes a burden and a ritual. Number two, you no longer can feel the highs and the lows.
  • Little things can make you very emotional: the author stepped off his platform, went to his office, and cried for two hours uncontrolled; for three weeks straight he would wake up and weep in bed while his wife left him alone because she knew he was losing his mind.
  • Everyone drains you; you become cynical — the whole lesson we already discussed; nothing can satisfy you, not even the spot you worked years to reach; you cannot think straight, your focus is off, and productivity drops.
  • You self-medicate — with food, with drugs and alcohol, with ball games, with spending your money. You do not laugh anymore: when was the last time you had a big old belly-roll laugh, the kind where the tears come out of your eyes? And time off and sleep no longer recharge you.

The Cliff Edge

  • Burnout is not a gradual slope we can all get up and down; it is a precipice, an edge, and once you topple over it, things seem to come unglued and you'll never regain anything until you turn loose of everything and reestablish yourself.
  • The psalmist David reached burnout, he is convinced; and in the first-century church some of the disciples and followers of Christ reached burnout too, and Jesus was very aware of it — what would he say to his disciples? Come away; come with me.
  • A prophet of God stood on Carmel, watched the glory of the Lord fall and the prophets of Baal killed with no competition whatsoever, then found out some woman was after him, got out in a quiet spot, sat down, and was convinced the world was against him: he had given and given, stood and stood, until he hit burnout.
  • When was the last time you measured your effectiveness and your commitment — in the things of life, the things of God, your work, your family, your finances? Burnout can affect your life choices: some of the biggest choices of your life, faced in burnout, will destroy you.

Ways To Be Restored

  • Tell somebody your fears and your feelings — not just anybody, but somebody willing to listen, who may not even have a response for you. Develop a circle of people around you who love you, with accountability and connection. Continue to lean into God: lean back and you'll fall back; lean into him and you can still go forward.
  • Simply rest: there is a difference between sleeping twelve hours and being rested. Do something to take your attention away from the pain — his grandmother used to say, whenever you're feeling a pity party of your own, go help somebody else. And do what you can: the last thing you need in burnout is to isolate yourself from the rest of the world; if you can only get to the church and be quiet in the presence of God, something can happen.
  • Grieve your losses. When his father passed away, he was strong because his mother needed him; it was a month or two later, moving a piece of furniture in the living room at home, that he saw his dad's flag on the shelf, broke, and grieved and cried for hours, and his wife came in and just touched him on the shoulder. How long did the children of Israel grieve when Moses died? God knows humanity needs to grieve.
  • Reopen your heart once you've been hurt and disappointed, instead of closing your mind and building a wall. Live today in a way that will help you tomorrow, allow your life during burnout to make you stronger and better, and be there for someone else who is facing it.

Hold On To The Rock

  • You will pour yourself into the work of God; you will give until you have nothing else to give, and at the end of it all you will stand like Paul did: I have finished my course, I fought a good fight, I kept the faith, and there's a reward for me.
  • He may have come to burnout and exhaustion in certain areas of his own life, but he is thankful he had somebody praying for him and that he knew where the rock was; when everything stopped, a week or a month or a year later, he felt around, felt the rock, and crawled back to his knees and back on his feet: I'm an overcomer, victorious through the blood of Jesus.
  • The closing prayer: God, help us not to burn out; help us not to compromise, help us keep our pride in check, help us not to be cynics. Before you leave, find somebody, hug their neck, and let them know you're praying for them.

dig your bible out we'll see if we can get to it tonight i do welcome all of you out if you're online watching we're glad you're here honored that you are joining with us all right ian your turn come on dakota you can help him come on what are you waiting for bread's getting cold all right you need a paper and a pen pencil or whatever else is in that little tote all right if you don't yet have the material we're using it didn't see it coming anybody reading it very interesting isn't it isn't it good anybody all right if you don't have it you need to get a copy you need to read it i'm just it's a recommendation i'm making to you to kind of help you amen help us all through life's situations uh the first session just while they're handing out the handouts our first session we did was um on cynicism being a cynic cynical what's it mean to be a cynic yeah i'm not sinner but cynic means you don't trust everybody's got ulterior motives right it makes you nervous about people anybody know anyone like that don't raise your hand and don't especially don't look at your neighbor yeah that that's one of the things that in life you can become a cynic as life's problems unfold and as people treat you wrong or bad or whatever you can you can come to the place actually that you don't believe anybody wants god or anybody cares and next thing you know you've lost the hope right the second session we went through was anybody remember compromise yeah we uh compromise what's that about the art of compromising what does it mean to compromise nobody wants to say because that means you would know right what does it mean to compromise a what yeah giving in to a lesser value or lesser standard sure oh you're like wow that's yeah okay what she said yeah i'm with her um when you compromise that means you have you change your stance your position on something that you once held as a solid brick wall if you will in your life compromise it happens you didn't see it happening but it begins to happen in your life last week we talked about the real fun one anybody recall what was it one more time comes before uh yeah isn't that funny we know all of that pride we talked about pride and how before you know it i mean all of these are connecting is anybody noticing the cynicism the compromise the pride these things kind of intertwine with one another because as we're humans listen carefully you can be as good as you want as perfect as you want but in the midst of life things can unfold in a way that you never ever imagined that brings us to our session tonight called burnout now i've got to say on the outset if you haven't again if you have yet to do the material you're doing yourself a disservice his story is in here on his life of burnout this particular author he pastors a church it's not a upc church or anything he pastors a church up in toronto canada but he gives his personal testimony of how he after all of the excitement and all the thrill he came to a place in his life that nothing mattered he thought that the depression and oppression and all the stuff he was going through was because of midlife crisis or because of something he was said i was still praying i was still going to church i was still preaching i was still doing the things that as a minister i was supposed to do but he said i could no longer feel the word that i was preaching i'd reached a part in my life where i'd burned out so he takes a sabbatical you know he said he said in 30 days he slept an average of 12 hours a day and several naps in between he said of all the people that made fun of him laughed at him called him or whatever he said i finally realized what i had done was i had released all of my good into people and now i'm left barren and by myself how interesting is that now the last three weeks that we talked these are things that we all have dealt with or deal with burnout is one thing that none of us want to ever ever embrace does anybody here honestly could say that you've been burned out before i mean burned out i didn't say burned up i didn't say burned in burned out anybody i will be honest with you i have faced this mountain before i might not have known that's what it was at the time if i would have known that's what it was at the time i probably would have handled things maybe a bit different that's why i felt like tonight this lesson was going to be very important for us because in 2022 you listen to pastor men in 2022 there are so many distractions and things that are taking your attention or trying to pull you away from the purpose and the cause of god you can burn yourself out on things that really honestly don't matter is that okay listen to me carefully i want you all to look at me that's why what do i do when these youngins one night say look right here it doesn't mean you're a terrible horrible person if you burn out it's not what it means it means you simply are human and life happened tonight we're going to talk about some ways that burnout happens and i hope it's going to help you because then we're going to talk about some things that maybe if you're there that you can you can proceed forward and get through and get beyond it let's first go to the word of the lord psalm chapter 46. psalm 46 verse 1. yeah y'all feel like you can read this out loud nobody can have nobody has an excuse we all have it in front of us so it's not like you can't say i don't have that verse ready out loud god is our refuge and strength a very present help in trouble number two therefore will not we fear though the earth be removed though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea though the waters thereof roar and be troubled though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof in the battle of life in the day in and the day out now young people and young when you say the term young people please understand where i'm coming from that doesn't mean between the age of 12 and 18. that's youth group age but young people can be anybody who's trying to find their way in their youthfulness and they're still discovering and and you know they're trying to figure out what's going on in life young folk by and large they don't really understand burnout unless you're talking about their favorite coffee you know i used to drink acubaki wakiyati but now i got burned out on it so i went on the huki bukit nuni and i like that one now huh it's one of those you can't really order just units at starbucks my wife has to write it down i don't know what that is just just make this but then it changes because they get burned out on anybody ever been burned down on baloney don't talk about oh sorry it's a ham it's a ham and turkey generation i'm sorry have you ever been burned out logan over to say never you may have been burned out on peanut butter and jelly um i'm good with that right now too can you tell i'm hungry no you can burn out on things basically that simply really means in the definition and in the way that we use in that context is you tire of that and you want a change that okay if you've ever in your battle of life feel like though that things no longer have the same meaning and value and purpose and passion in your life it might be time that you begin to reevaluate where you are listen carefully again i have to reiterate it doesn't mean that you've sinned and you've bottomed out and you've lost all hope and heaven is no longer in view it simply means that you have come to a place in life where you are no longer looking for the joy of the lord to be your strength but your mind your physical body your emotional tank is dried up you have no ability to feel what somebody else feels how many know when you come through the church house doors you can feel something what is it that you feel besides the heat you feel the presence of the lord do you not huh you could go right now if you drove really fast to left here you could head to the campground in in a church campground tonight you'll be able to feel the electricity in that room why what's happened the word of god the power of god the expectancy is there all of us who ever been to a church youth camp will tell every kid that walks out the door headed that way if you don't have a holy ghost you will when you before you get back what do we mean by that you can't get out of the room you're all about trying to get out and just get out of this and it's just there it is right the fact of the matter is that if you have ever felt burn out those things that you took for granted that you felt in the things of god and the things of life and the things of your family you can come to a point that it affects you in a way that you no longer enjoy where you are now in in our modern culture some of us would identify this and allow me to say it with midlife crisis you know that that 55 year old that's out there driving a 300 000 lambo i tried that dakota they wouldn't take my check don't know what happened um you know or or they go and they they do this or that and you scratch your head and say what are they doing what they're doing is is they're losing the excitement and the thrill of something and so they begin to chase something else and that of course turns to what something else and then their life is this that's why in of cases and i hate it but in our culture drug addictions and alcoholism and and things like that can be replacements for true joy and passion compassion and connection with things in life look there are ways that you can see burn burnout might be approaching you i want to go through these try to help you number one your passion fades the passion you had if you're a sunday school teacher what drives you into that classroom every sunday what are you hoping is going to happen in there is that what you're hoping is going to happen yeah you're hoping that a light bulb's going to go off aren't you you're hoping they're not going to fight right you're hoping that they're going to be nice and so you can get your lesson out right and then all of what you've studied in your lesson i'm using that as an example now in your heart and in your mind you're saying lord i want to be able to present this so that they can make honest choices and decisions that lead them closer to you that's called passion when you want to come to the house of god to be with the family of god has there come a time in your life when you no longer desire that because it's more of a burden than anything passion did you used to enjoy being in the presence of god because of the the feeling of the anointing and the glory but now your passion has faded for it and now it's almost just a ritual something to watch for your passion fades number two very important you no longer can feel the highs and the lows i mean you know that emotions are real in people how many of you know that emotions work in the heart of humanity certainly but when you begin to to burn out when you begin to a place that that you're almost at that cliff if you will something about the highs and the lows no longer affect you because when you're really on fire and you're really doing something and you're really following your your passion your desire for god you will recognize the high moments and you will recognize very clearly the low moments have you ever felt low in your spirit what do you do generally what's your first response when you feel the low pray god help me get through this what's the first response when you're at the high point in your experience what is it woohoo hallelujah and you're up there huh but something can happen in your spirit to where that no longer even allows your emotions to feel anything and you're simply on a plane something to look for number three little things can make you very emotional the author of the book that i mentioned to you the one that we're reading currently he mentions going to the platform at his church to preach stepping off the platform going to his office and crying for two hours uncontrolled emotion he said i thought i was having a nervous breakdown he said i thought that i was losing my mind i thought that i was at a place to where things were just blowing up in my life he said what was happening was as i was burning out and i could no longer allow god to help my emotions even mentions for three weeks straight he cried i'd wake up he said i'd wake up and i'd be crying i'd lay in bed two hours and weep my wife just knew that i was losing my mind but she left me alone and i just got through it hang on to me little things make you emotional listen to me carefully i'm not talking about y'all hold on to me hormonal things that happen in people i'm not talking about stages of life i'm talking about the things that god normally would use your spirit to intercede for someone to reach for someone now it simply makes you an emotional wreck you might want to watch that might be a sign of burnout the next one this is one that i think probably we all wonder about sometimes everyone drains you big small great little huge lit whatever that just drain you it's almost it's almost the most difficult and greatest challenge to simply speak to somebody because you don't know what your response is going to be talking about one of the things to watch out for burnout the next one of course we've already discussed in a whole lesson you become cynical why are they doing that what are they doing that for you know what i don't even care let them do what they want to doesn't matter to me i'm stronger than well i might not be even though but it doesn't matter because tomorrow they won't be here or you know what i can just walk whatever it is you can become very cynical as burnout's approaching the next one probably spoke most loudest to me in my particular nothing can satisfy you why is that nothing can satisfy you when you're gonna when you're approaching burnout what does that really mean discontentment what is that really yeah what else nothing can satisfy you can work for years to acquire or reach a spot but yeah now i'm going to stop halfway in this list of things sometimes the old-timers will tell us what you know what you need to do is pray through it huh you know y'all thought i had a big jug oh man they come out with when you know that super soaker full where are you come here i know what you need now pray until that's gone huh my grandma she'd pray you through and you'd have to do something just for self-defense granted if you're just stern i promise i'll get up what can happen friend is you can reach a place to where you forget the purpose the principle the meaning the power the passion the desire therefore you're not even satisfied with things another one and hang on to me a minute not or cannot think straight now i'll be first to tell you me it's my opinion some of y'all i'm joking me in in 2022 a lot of us call it i have covered brain anybody blaming it on covet still yeah yeah yeah you can't think straight why why is that talking about burnout tonight why is it that if you're approaching a level of burnout you can't think straight what's going on your focus is off now all of us skip beats once in a while right i i don't know did i did i put wash powders in there i don't remember i mean the phone rang and then the door knock and then i had so i don't remember that you know but what can happen though in burnout is is you lose focus on the smallest of things and it pushes your left and right and then you're back to the other ones now you don't care and now the goals you i mean things just don't mean what they used to productivity drops it just doesn't matter and all the other ones connect to that here's one and hang on to me you self-medicate you can self-medicate with a lot of things agreed you can self-medicate how many's ever self-medicated with food why'd y'all look at me i wore checks tonight for the reason you can self-medicate on drugs alcohol you can self-medicate on stuff going off ball games or just spending your money and thinking you're self-medicating all you're trying to do is do what and what you've done is actually you're facing or you're approaching possibility of a burn up here's one that i i can all of us can see and recognize and we never ever want to identify it but you do not laugh anymore you don't laugh anymore that one hurts my heart i love to laugh and y'all know that when i see somebody that i know used to love to laugh but they don't laugh anymore it worries me why because happiness has left the room the weight of world is now on them and they can't even laugh can i ask a silly question you don't have to answer when's the last time you had a big old belly roll laugh i mean just the greatest biggest old belly roll laugh see i have different laughs you all don't know this this is my secret if i think it's a real funny thing i'll laugh but if i don't want to laugh but i'm forced to you know you have to you know the lip right you know because it's cordial to laugh i mean you can't not laugh right you gotta and then there's the one where they're laughing hard and you don't want to but you feel like yeah yeah yeah yeah good one yeah y'all laughing because you know exactly what i'm talking about it's almost like they're they're presets but then there's the one when for whatever reason you can't open your eyes the tears are coming out of your eyes and your belly's flopping over and over and the more you try to forget why you're laughing because the image is so real in your mind you continue to laugh let me ask you a question and and i'm not done yet i'm going to ask you a question at this segment if you no longer laugh is that in your with your family is it in all points of life is it on your job is it at your home because it's something i've discovered i can be having the worst day week month of my life but when i get with my wife and my children who really know me i can enjoy a good laugh why what just changed the atmosphere who you're with your surroundings i no longer feel like i'm i'm having to perform i'm no longer feeling like i'm having to to meet up to someone's expectations because my kids know or my wife knows if i'm laughing that most likely they're going to laugh too because they're laughing at me no i mean they're laughing with me talking about things that might happen if you're approaching burnout the last one here is time off and sleep no longer recharge you they no longer help you i've heard many of us say man i took a vacation i need another one to take a vacation because of the vacation what does that really mean means you probably didn't rest or recharge on the vacation this is one i've never really understood but i guess we're all guilty of it how many set an alarm on vacation huh anybody sure you do because you got 96 412 things that you've decided to do on your week of rest and relaxation and one of them is at 7 00 am for whatever reason somebody that i know that's very near and dear to me that wants to watch the sun rise maybe it'll be there tomorrow can't just not see it again today and no she's pulling no we got to go it's the sun it's got to be so i'm out of standing there it did i did i did i just saw it it's right there y'all you know i'm you know y'all the same way aren't you same thing huh man when my kids i dragged them to somewhere y'all are going to enjoy this now come on parents you know what i'm talking about you're going gonna make sure they just love it and it's the worst thing ever these 11 points i brought to you these are things you you probably need to put a little a few feelers out for a few watch things out for how many of these things that i mentioned to you on this list have affected you or or are affecting you presently you don't have to answer that out loud when was the last time you measured your effectiveness and your commitment in the things of life the things of god the things of work things of your job your family your finances when was the last time you measured your effectiveness and your commitment to those things what does that have to do with burnout i'll tell you why because if you're facing burnout you will begin to lose the grip that you have on life and things will begin to turn sideways on you i personally know many folk that have faced burnout and quite honestly i don't really know if they knew it was that i know that there have been times in my life that i have faced this many if you if you in this list of 11 things or so if you're if you're at about half of them you can identify with it might be time for you to back up and do some self evaluation i'm not saying you're a burnout listen to me carefully please burnout is not a gradual slope we can all get up and down a gradual slope right burnout is when you're on that and it's a precipice or an edge and once you topple over the edge things just seem to come unglued and you'll never regain anything until you turn loose of everything and reestablish yourself i can give you biblical after biblical example of folk that reached a place of burnout one that always that comes to me and all of us know it it's one of the verses we read tonight the psalmist david reached burn out i am convinced that in the first century church that some of the disciples and followers of christ reached burnout and jesus was very aware of that with humanity and what would he say to his disciples come on come away these folks these people are stretching you pulling you don't no come on come with me come on i'm going to take you somewhere and then there were times that he would do that but he was at a point because of imagine imagine if you had jesus if we had jesus sitting in here tonight on these pews what would we all be doing right now what would we be doing doing what no we'd all just pleasantly sit and watch and some of us would probably make a mistake excuse me jesus got you you're the man huh we'd all want his attention and man we'd do everything we could do to get imagine in the day when he walks in shoe leather and the dead are rising up and things are happening and healings are happening and food is happening i mean everywhere he went people were looking for him knocking on doors pounding i don't know who you are but if i can just get to you we talk about him every week here's my point when it comes to reaching a place of saturation and burnout something can happen to us and if we do not see it coming we will topple over that edge and if you topple over that edge we don't know how we will land i'm trying to help us the last time you measured your effectiveness and your commitment in all of your areas of life where did you come up short where did you come up wanting i don't think anybody in this room simply wants to abide in life you know what if i can just live i'll be fine if i just make my heart keep going in my eyes to blink i'll be good no we want to make a difference don't we somehow to be able to to be nice to someone and help someone and encourage someone the fact of the matter is is that burnout friend can affect your life choices some of the biggest choices in your life you can be faced with and burn out and you will make that choice and it will destroy you i don't have time tonight to talk about one particular event in my life where i faced that and it took me months i was trying not to make a bad decision but the more and the deeper i got into it i didn't know what was happening i just thought it was me and life and this is what it now i now looking back i could say well what god was doing was trying to stir up my nest anybody ever used that one sure god was trying to get me to a place yeah it could be that i had just given and given and given and given and given and given listen to me and i'd gotten to a place to where i could no longer feel like i could give because here's what happens when you're in ministry when you're in loving people when you're in the the the activity of trying to make a difference in someone's life this is what can happen this is you this is me i can come to you and i can say hey i need something from you and you because you're human you will feel obligated or responsible or you will want to help and what i'm simply doing is i'm touching you and i'm asking you for something when i turn loose of you and i walk away what did i leave i left my handprint on you now guess who's going to feel that the next person that comes hey i need this can you help me with this can this is this is where i'm at i'm to have this situation and when i they turn to walk away you feel that handprint still it's amazing to me to watch some of you young parents in here with your children mom mom mom mom mom mom and all of us parents are like except for that one's parents they're like mom mom and they just keep doing what they're doing mom my wife was notorious for this she'd stand there and here come one of our kids and she would go and they'd go how do you ignore when somebody's pulling at you pulling out you're pulling out you're pulling at you come on parents how do you do it what do you do huh some of y'all don't want to get in trouble do you you try to take care of attend to them but you also got 43 other things going on right and it pulls from you it twists you it turns you in life listen to me tonight we're talking about i didn't see it coming burnout you can get to a place in your life that you're no longer effective you're no longer affected and the word of god no longer changes your life ways that you can be restored if you are facing burnout number one tell somebody your fears and your feelings that does not mean find anybody and tell them everything about your problems and stuff you would not tell the concrete truck driver your problems maybe you could but find somebody that here's one that may not have a response for you but they're willing to listen number two develop a circle of people around you listen who love you have that accountability that connection with folk number three listen to this continue to lean into god lean into him don't lean back if you fall back or lean back what's going to happen when you fall probably fall back but if you're leaning into god something happens you can go forward still it doesn't have to take you backwards the next one simply rest this is what our prayer is at our home at night lord help us tonight to sleep well and to rest how many knows there's a difference i mean he knows there's a difference anybody here ever sleep 12 hours in a row whatever and get up and say man i didn't even rest i'm luckily going he was in here for half a day how can you not be rested point is what there's a difference rest here's one do something to take your attention away from the pain that you're trying to figure out the the things that's happening in your life it doesn't mean go find something that will destroy you or whatever it simply means put your brain into something else what my grandmother used to say to me was whenever you're feeling a pity party on your own go help somebody else it'll take your mind off of you now the hard part of that is what you're still in it but in this trying to get restored and brought back something can happen to you in being distracted from it you could gain a little traction get your feet back under you in one of those moments another one is simply do what you can one of the most frightening things as a pastor that i hear from somebody who's struggling with life with depression with things with problems with issues and no matter what they are i just really couldn't come to church today i needed to stay home now i understand that on one side because being at home means you're by yourself and you can actually rest and sleep and i understand that but the last thing you need to do if you're in a point of burnout the last thing you need to do is isolate yourself from the rest of the world and that's always my concern because if you isolate yourself from the world what will happen in the point of isolation you will find a way to excuse all things for your betterment and the next thing you know what can happen you can turn loose of what you were basically holding on to and now you're trying to find your footing and the challenge is greater so if you can only in your point of burnout if you can just simply get to the church come to the church get in the presence of god i've stated this multiple times to all of you on our prayer chains that we used to have here in the church many many times i simply needed to get here and be quiet i just needed to get into the presence of god and that's okay i didn't need to jump up and down and run around and i just simply needed to get where god was because if god is there breathing and i can once again attune my ear spiritually to the heartbeat of god something can happen another one this is a challenge for all leaders especially in ministry is grieve your losses life is full of disappointments life is full of losses faults failures problems and a lot of times in ministry and in life we do not take the time to grieve those things because we all tell ourselves what i'm strong i can handle it i don't mind reflecting for a moment for the sake of time i'll be short but when my father passed away way back i was to be strong because that's what i was expecting myself to do i sat on the floor in the hospital and i got there and they'd called and said he was dead i went and saw him and i i don't know what else to do i came out of the room and sat on the floor in the hospital and my uncle came out and said your mother needs you i took that as a response dad's not here now so i stood up wiped my face and i went in there and did what i had to do my brother i watched him do the same my other brother the same my sister we just did but it wasn't probably until a month later two months later i'd married this young lady and we were at our trailer and i sat down on the floor and i just moved in a piece of furniture in the living room and my dad's flag was on one of the shelves that i broke and i grieved and i cried for hours my wife come in and just touched me on the shoulder that's all she needed to do i just had to have that to put it all back now that's pretty drastic because that's my dad right but there's times in here that somebody that we invested in that you invested in they walk away we don't take time to grieve that it can make us cynical it can make us angry we need to grieve that so it gets put into its proper place is there anything wrong with grieving no in fact it's biblical how long do the children of israel grieve when moses died how long 40 days god knows humanity needs to grieve they need to put things in perspective if you never address those things you need to grieve your losses and it may all fall on you at the same time reopen your heart once you've been hurt once you've burned out once you've been disappointed once you've been disgusted and whatever life is throwing at you the tendency for us as humans is what to close our hearts so we won't be hurt again close our minds build a wall close the windows and doors and just say i could do it my own the truth is is we need each other we need love we need to feel passion and compassion we need to feel joy and laughter and contentment we need to we need to enjoy when when others celebrate we need to be able to celebrate with them you know the greatest challenge in our 2022 culture is there's a whole lot of things going on in our world that's causing our current generation to be freaked out and lose hope anybody noticing that it crushes my heart to hear when someone commits suicide what drove them to that it crushes my heart to hear somebody who throws in the towel and walks away from life what caused them to get there see we're all human and we're in the church and we we all have the blood of christ and the love of god and so we're exempt didn't see it coming burnout lastly live today in a way that will help you tomorrow do something today that helps for tomorrow how can burnout be turned into something godly that's a question can it how can burnout be turned into something that god can bless maybe it's god's way of saying through your process i have perfected things in you because in a state of burnout friend hear me you can sanctify yourself there's a lot of time a lot of reasons people burn out pride and ignorance jealousy oh thought you could do it didn't need help everybody's depending on you and you're glad they are on and on it goes and all those things cause you to be put into a position to where you will begin to quote scripture to people if i be lifted up oh that's not you lifted up the old one that i really like you know we're going to sing and worship the lord praise me as i worship him well we under we understand that's a slip but here's the facts there's sometimes in our ministry in our day-to-day trying to be godly and trying to be that person that husband that wife whatever it is that we can develop things in our lives that are no more godly than a man on the moon and god can use some of that some time to sanctify us and get us to a place to where we can change number nine will you allow your life during burnout to make you stronger and better that's a great challenge isn't it lastly how can you be there for someone who is facing burnout or who's in the midst of it now i realize that seven things you didn't see coming okay the other ones we could talk very clearly about because being cynical or compromise or pride those are things that but when it comes to burnout what you have just said if you have identified with anything in this lesson is you have said that you have faults and failures in your life and you hope you don't get to a place that you lose it the other thing is and i know i heard this very loud and clear coming from your invisible voice tonight is but i'm a child of god i'm exempt from this this will never happen to me and that is further from the truth than anything how can a prophet of god stand on carmel watch the glory of the lord fall kill prophets of baal no competition now whatsoever it's all dead and find out that some woman's after him and get out in this quiet spot and sit down and say worlds against convinced he hit burnout he had given giving giving stood stood stood burned don't don't and now he's at a point that he's got to make a decision tonight i didn't want to bring up any big wounds or deep scars on anybody but i would tell you friend this is something that any of us can face this if you've lost your passion find it take some time to rediscover it if you've lost your ability to laugh and enjoy life back up relook at it i really feel like sometimes we miss some of the greatest blessings jerome would you come because we take ourselves too seriously is it okay if somebody picks on you some of us we would we would be hurt well that ain't very nice i didn't mean to be nice i was picking on you and if some would say yeah that but this is the new generation you're not allowed to do that well sorry i wasn't born in this generation that doesn't mean i can't learn right because i want to learn i do i want to be i want to be tolerant of some things but friend we have just as a culture we have just come through a generation that some of you were in where every single one of you got a trophy even though you didn't even play and you thought that was fair everybody needs a trophy on their bookcase at home you have something to throw out later right but that's not how life works friend there's a lot of times i have to make the most challenging and toughest decision in my life with tears in my eyes and my heart breaking and i have to make a choice in that moment that can drive you into giving and giving and giving and pushing and pushing and pulling and pulling and pushing and pushing until now you don't even really know what was the purpose the meaning the principle behind it and in a lot of these points i mentioned to you tonight about burnout guess where the enemy was he wasn't even in there he didn't have to be he let your emotions he led our passions he led our ways that we used to think was right or things we did to drive us and he just simply stood back and went i i i have i think in my older age i'm no longer i'm no i'm not old my wife tells me that often because i have to ask her what because i can't hear it but anyway um as i get older i'm finding some things out and i don't want to be harsh nor mean and i'm not i'm not my heart is my life this is where i'm from either will or will not live for god i want to help you learn i'm going to help the word i'm going to help you concepts and principles but you got to make that choice i cannot make it for you i can't i cannot make you come to an altar i ask you almost every service why don't you come to the road come to the calter trying to give you opportunity to just to let god move and speak and do so but i i don't have i got a thing of oil there but that doesn't do a whole lot i just but if you're hungry for god and you want the things of god working in your life you will do it because of him because of who he is you will pour yourself into the work of god you will give until you have nothing else to give you will live for him as if it's the last thing you do and at the end of it all you will stand like paul did i have finished my course i fought a good fight i kept the faith and there's there's a reward for me i know but i'm done what i don't want to happen tonight is for anybody under the sound of my voice online or here in this place to come to the place of burnout to where you lose hope lose faith and you walk away from god because i'll tell you this friend the enemy would gladly have you he will not give you anything he will not allow you anything he will simply take what you feel now and your hurt your emotion and your passionless life and he will ask you simply to go online and post something negative against your brother or somebody in church so that the rest of the world that's negative will say you see i told you ain't no such thing as god i'm convinced that's exactly what's happened and the enemy says i just needed your negative voice to speak to them i'll declare this god's good and god is faithful and i may have in certain areas of my life come to burn out and come to a place of exhaustion and not know what to do next but i'm thankful that i had somebody praying for me and i'm thankful that i knew where the rock was and i could run to it and i could fall on it and just hold on storms and life were blowing and i'm somehow got a hold of it life has fallen apart on me and somehow i've got a hold of it and when everything stopped a week a month a year late or whatever i was able to stand and i where i don't know i mean so much has happened but when i felt around guess what i felt brother dana felt the rock and i was able to gently crawl back to my knees and back with my hands up and back on my feet and i was able to say i'm an overcomer victorious through the blood of jesus just stand with me on this wednesday night it's ten minutes after eight i want to ask you do you feel like praying tonight just talk in a few moments to the lord come on lift your voice lord help us not to burn out god help us to maintain god your plan and purpose for our lives we need you jesus in and of ourselves god we can't but you can we got to make tough choices that's right we got to make decisions lord that's true but in you jesus it's possible with your help lord we can be overcomers victorious in the name of jesus help us lord not to compromise help us lord to keep our pride in check help us god not to be cynics help us lord not to burn out god i know that when life happens to us lord we are very frail and we are very fragile but when the blood of jesus is on our lives there is hope there is a way there is a way jesus and it is you come on anybody just want to love him for a moment before you go home lord i love you lord i need you lord i trust you lord i trust you lord i trust in you lord i love you jesus i love you make a strong god give us strength lord i pray jesus give us strength i pray oh my god i love you tonight there is healing in the waters of christ there is healing in the name of jesus restoration by the blood of the lamb you love the lord tonight before you leave here why don't you find somebody hug their neck and just let them know you're praying for them don't forget the announcements i'm so glad you came out tonight i love you guys
