Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

Walk in love, not in darkness

  • Be followers of God as dear children and walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself for us.
  • Fornication, uncleanness, and covetousness are not to be named among the saints; no covetous man has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
  • Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
  • Walk as children of light, proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
  • Redeem the time, because the days are evil, and understand what the will of the Lord is.

Scriptures: Ephesians 5:1-2; Ephesians 5:3-5; Ephesians 5:7-16

Filled with the Spirit

  • Be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess, but be filled with the Spirit.
  • Speak to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.
  • Give thanks always for all things unto God, submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

Scriptures: Ephesians 5:18-21

Wives and husbands: Christ and the church

  • Wives are to submit to their own husbands as unto the Lord, for the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church.
  • Husbands are to love their wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself for it.
  • Christ sanctifies and cleanses the church with the washing of water by the word, to present it a glorious church without spot or wrinkle.
  • God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son; the husband who loves his wife loves himself.

Scriptures: Ephesians 5:22-24; Ephesians 5:25-30; John 3:16

One flesh: the great mystery

  • A man leaves his father and mother and cleaves to his wife, and the two become one flesh.
  • Genesis chapter two gives the pattern: Adam received the woman God formed and called her bone of his bones and flesh of his flesh.
  • This is a great mystery, but Paul speaks concerning Christ and the church.
  • Let every husband love his wife even as himself, and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

Scriptures: Ephesians 5:31-33; Genesis 2:24

learn about you in jesus name we pray amen amen all right we are going to go into again the book of ephesians um we have discovered just a little bit of foundation again just to rehash a bit that paul wrote this letter to the church at ephesus that's the church that he had spent some time helping to develop and to to put together thriving city i mean ephesus was a huge metropolitan city it was a pagan city as well in rome of asia at that time a port city they had wealth and commerce in fact ephesus is one of the uh is one of the homes of one of the seven wonders of the ancient world the temple of diana the goddess of fertility and hunting uh her um temple was there idol worship was rampant in this area of the the world and it is in that environment that paul is writing this letter to that church um there was a great group of believers there of gentiles of greeks of of people of of all types shapes and sizes anytime you had a port city that was on a river or on the ocean or on a sea whichever depend there would always be travelers coming in and out so all types and kinds of people would be there that was ephesus okay tonight we're going to look at chapter number five now i've wanted to do two chapters every week but chapter five and chapter six are chock full of information and so i'm gonna break it down into two sessions so next week we'll pick up and finish with uh with ephesians in chapter six but tonight we are going to look at ephesians chapter number five um mom and dad i want you to make sure that you are there to help your kids understand and learn okay follow me carefully there's nothing bad in here i just want i want you to know that uh when the bible study is over and and your family is sitting around the table or whatever you do together uh children are gonna have questions and mom and dad you can be the ones that give them answers all right that's part of the growing and the responsibility of being a parent so help your kids with that this week and next all right let's begin it in chapter five verse number one be there for followers of god as dear children verse two walk in love as christ also hath loved us and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to god for a sweet smelling savor this paul continues here in the letter uh in his teaching and instruction to the church there he he's reminding the saints that there is a purpose and a call in god doing a work in your life there's there's a reason that salvation is present there's a reason that the blood of jesus is applied and his words here are very specific he says to to walk to do to be be found following the lord god uh he any attaches to that the the very character and and if you could simple word that would describe god and that is you do it with love understanding that the love is actually the relationship between you and your savior it's the relationship between you and the god of this world or the god of glory if you will that established this world put everything into existence it is that relationship and that is all based fundamentally on love god gave the world jesus to establish that love connection if you will to the world now understand that is cross-generational uh from way back to way forward okay it's not as if our generation is worse than generations past and so god's not gonna love our 2020 society not true the fact is is that the demonstration of god's desire to have a connection with people with humanity it's so powerful that paul reminds the church at ephesus um be followers of god as children he mentions that because of the state of learning and continuously trying to adhere to what the father the word the power of god is doing in your life and in doing so you do that with love and jesus established that again it's mentioned here as paul wrote as a sweet-smelling savor there's something pleasant about those who will follow and pursue after the things of god continuing here listen carefully in ephesians five and three the fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness let it not be once named among you as becometh saints neither filthiness nor foolish talking nor jesting which are not convenient but rather giving of thanks verse 5 for this you know that no whoremonger nor unclean person nor covetous man who is an idolater hath any inheritance in the kingdom of christ and of god okay again some specific words and teaching here that paul is giving to the church notice here how that paul transitions from the love of jesus christ for the church and he begins to talk about relationships he mentions fornication he mentions uncleanness he mentions covetousness you have to realize that those are things that a person an individual holds or can hold in their heart because of how that their their love and emotions and whatnot how they work in humanity for you to truly understand the connection the love connection if you will between jesus christ and you as a saint or you as a person as an individual you have to understand that what paul has established here in the letter is what you and i need today in 2020 we need to understand that there are parallels to that relationship okay if in a relationship on earth you have hatred and bitterness and strife then then you're not going to communicate you're not going to spend time you're not going to want to be together you're not going to want to invest in each other you're not going to want to commit you know i mean on and on we could talk and that's the same scenario with the lord god if you can't trust and build that relationship with him then you're not going to want to spend time with him you're not going to want to get to know him and that's the worst thing that you can do as an individual we see it in our day in that the reflection of relationship that people have with jesus you can see that all around us and the way that they act in the way that they're showing themselves if you will their relationship with god is emanating from them okay and what paul tells them is don't don't let those things those fleshly acts that relationship act don't let that being a negative thing but let the relationship with god be a positive thing now let's continue because it's going to tie the verse 1 all the way through is going to connect it on verse 7 says this be not you therefore partakers with them those people that are doing those things for ye were sometimes darkness but now are ye light in the world in the lord excuse me walk as children of light for it this is a parenthesis here for the fruit of the spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth and it closes the parenthesis uh verse 10 proving what is acceptable unto the lord and have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness but rather reprove them verse 12 for it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret but all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light for whatsoever doth make manifest is light okay wherefore he saith awake thou that sleepest and arise from the dead and christ shall give thee light see then that ye walk circumspectfully not as fools but as wise redeeming the time because the days are evil 2020 these words are still echoing through our generation paul emphasizes here the importance of not participating with the works of darkness it holds true today keep yourself clean keep yourself separated allow good fruit to be seen growing on you okay the world will see the good fruits because of your position in the light of the word and of the power and the spirit of god they will see that that person is a good person that there's fruit there's there's there's fruit of the spirit if you will those goodness mercy our goodness and and temperance and patience and long-suffering those things will be seen in you seen in you when he says to walk circumspectly not as fools that means to walk with respect in regards to how you carry yourself for crying out loud have some self-respect can i say it that way for those parents that are raising children there's a reason that you're teaching them to watch their language to watch how they carry themselves how they sit in a chair how they present themselves to adults how they respect authority how they interact with other people how they interact with their own friends and their own their own peers if you will mom and dad you're doing your children and injustice if you don't help them understand let me be very old-fashioned for a moment if you don't help them understand the power of a yes ma'am or no ma'am or yes sir or no sir that's respect and and paul is telling the church to walk in that understand that you'll never go wrong respecting someone even if you don't feel like they deserve it you can still respect humanity all right again in 2020 we have seen an onslaught of disrespect and and contrary to authority and question everything and don't don't agree with with what's going on around you but but be heard and let your voice be be reveled and screaming and yelling and the fact of the matter is is is paul even says here in this letter that redeem the time because the days are evil there's stuff happening all around us and you need to know that there's a spiritual thing taking place your relationship with jesus christ is going to be what keeps you and saves you and protects you notice this i'm going to continue a little further here great teaching here in in the great lesson here in the letter that was written to the ephesians verse 18 says and be not drunk with wine wherein is excess but be filled with the spirit speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs singing and making melody in the heart in your heart to the lord giving thanks always verse 20 says for all things unto god and the father in the name of our lord jesus christ submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of god paul now shifts to the positive actions that the follower of jesus christ should have not to be drunk because when you're drunk according to where in his excess is what it says if you read the translation of that by what it says by with the original text it means that it make whatever makes you lose control don't do that and here specifically because of of the the ability that alcohol again drunk with wine that can have on your system is you can lose all sensibility all self-control in contrast to that other side of that be filled with the spirit of god let that spirit be seen working in your life sing it says s-i-n-g sing psalms uh make a melody let your heart be glad let your spirit and emotions rejoice in the lord by by the songs that you're saying um submit to one another when when you submit to your brother and sister and to family members and you're in you're just trying to get along it's not that you're yielding all of your rights to them you're simply saying i love you and i'm willing to work with you i'm willing to invest and to make connection with you and if i have to make concessions on mine let me submit to you so that you are going to have the same thing happen to you you're going to have to submit we're going to work together in this if always we're sitting here in an arm wrestling match and we're back and forth we're going to find out that sooner or later somebody is going to lose and when somebody loses if you will then that's where attitudes bitterness strife all of those things begin to happen but according to what paul was telling the church on that day and what is happening or what we need today is simply this if you'll submit one to another that means you take into consideration those around you if things are going to offend your neighbor those next to you please be mindful of that don't do it is that okay there's gonna be things that your your conscience says that your convictions are that your thoughts and the way you were taught the way you were raised is and it may or may not make sense to someone else but if you're gonna at any point offend your brother you need to check that and submit you need to stop back up even if you feel like you're justified or qualified in it all right this is a good lesson for parents to teach their children and a good lesson for moms and dads to learn sometimes there's that you got to find that middle place it's exactly what jesus did walking in shoe leather on planet earth you'll notice he went in a lot of places and and we'll we'll speak a lot about the scriptures and he went into the church with a whip and he whipped out the money changers and he stood up to the to the people that were trying to come against him and he said and did and he was bold and brash and all but the final if you'll notice at the end of his time on earth when he really really showed salvation to humanity he spoke when they spoke to him you think you're this you think you're that and he wouldn't yell he didn't have to convince them he simply said you said that you saw who i am you see what i am then with gentleness he went into that place of the cross understand friend that you the attitude and the activity of walking in the spirit of god will make a positive influence on those around you understand that please speaking kindly being kind to each other uh submitting one to another yielding one to another trying to get along trying to follow peace with all men very very important now when we finish here in verse number 21 it speaks of the letter he speaks of submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of god okay always trying to hold yourself to a standard and a place to where god can be seen in your life he now shifts into verse 22 wives submit yourselves unto your own husbands as unto the lord for the husband is the head of the wife even as christ is the head of the church and he is the savior of the body therefore as the church is subject unto christ so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything this is a powerful powerful statement of truth and teaching that paul is giving to the church at ephesus when paul addresses the wife wives he says here he is speaking to the physical wife as a human being we get that okay her relationship with her husband the one in which she is married to in the holy bonds of marriage okay this is a connection point here the word chosen here that paul writes is to submit but also the original was subjugate which means to conquer now listen carefully paul is addressing with the church in an environment of the type of worship that they were accustomed to in the temple of diana okay wives were to subjugate themselves to their own husbands submit to their own husbands the nature of the woman who had married would be to continue to be able to do whatever they wanted to because the flesh desire was to be independent and not to have to depend on anyone else but follow it the relationship that jesus christ had established with the church was one of complete and total surrender all right so when paul for example is writing to the church he mentions in various places to be submitted one to another and then he speaks of jesus and the church and the body of christ and the church the the bride and the groom the relationship if you will between husband and wife the reason that's very important is because jesus could have come to earth as a savior and if he didn't want to save anybody his sacrifice would have been null and void wouldn't have mattered but because from the foundation he established i am going to be that sacrifice for all of humanity that's a relationship connection now allow me for just a moment in 2020 in recent years up to today there's been an onslaught of attack on families the reason for that is because if the enemy of your soul the devil himself if you will the spiritual darkness that's out there if he can somehow confuse husbands and wives and the purpose and the roles that we play one with another in comparison to jesus christ and the church if he can confuse that then he's going to wreak havoc in your home on your job in your finances in your mind and your spirit in the church it there there's paul is not addressing here's trying to beat somebody into submission he's giving the reference in the instruction here jesus christ the church wives husband husbands wives children all and on it go he's connecting the points of reference here because it's all relationship with submission the relationship that jesus even speaks here paul does for an exam as unto the lord the same way that you should submit to jesus is the way that a wife should submit to her husband listen carefully the word subjugate which is the original word here defines that wives have to conquer the desire to be accountable to no one they have to conquer that because if they'll ever have a relationship with their husband the way that the church and jesus christ connects there will be peace and harmony in your relationship now the scripture here according to what paul wrote here is that the husband the husband is the head of the wife it's not a position of dominance nor a position of superiority okay but is a it is rather a place of responsibility of prominence and of purity in the process that god has for the marriage listen if we ever as individuals just simply consider the law of marriage in the land we have missed the entire point of the holy bonds of matrimony that is a god thing that is a man and woman coming together regardless of what 2020 tries to tell and teach us and as much as we want to be politically correct and on and on we can't submit to that teaching and doctrine why because it is contrary to the word of god and and friend husbands wives you got to understand here teaching the next generation how to respond in marriage how to be responsible accountable and submitted in marriage paul is addressing a topic in his day that would have been a hot topic of course that's why it's mentioned here there was evidently at the time in the church something going on because of all of the things that that church and in ephesus had gone through contrary to the temple of diana in the idol worship in which they were had come out of now it's hard for us to understand 2020 because we don't have big giant goddesses or or temples and things of that nature and so we we may or may not get it but it's the same principle and concept and if we'll ever understand when you come out of the world into the body of christ in your marriage there is a connection and a responsibility that has to happen jesus the church those that's that's our our or our pattern that we can follow after paul is helping us even today to truly understand in 2020 in this letter that the relationship with jesus christ we must have that as men and women when we understand that in the church then we will apply that to our marriages to our home life to our family time christ is the head of the church that body of believers okay paul compares the two wives and husbands jesus and his church now wives i realize that sometimes and you feel like you get the short end of the stick but i'm gonna i want to share something the way paul did with the church and at ephesus notice in verse 25 husbands love your wives even as christ also loved the church and gave himself for it that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing and water by the word that he might present it to himself a glorious church not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing but that it should be holy and without blemish verse 28 so ought men to love their wives as their own bodies he that loveth his wife loveth himself for no man ever yet hated his own flesh but nourisheth and cherisheth it even as the lord the church for we are members of his body and of his flesh and of his bones paul he shifted gears now and he begins to talk about husbands okay and their importance in being the head of the wife because he even compares it to jesus and the church notice that love your wife that love should equal the same love that jesus had for has for the church he gave himself for the church not that men should physically give themselves if you will to a wife but the love that a husband should have for his wife has to be compared with how he looks at himself if he takes care of himself he nourishes he bathes himself he clothes himself that same attitude that the man has he must understand that he must have that same wanting and desire to take care of himself to take care of his wife that's the connection we'll all again we'll all preach and teach john 3 16 for god so loved the world he gave his only begotten son but we truly don't understand it when it comes to our relationships husbands and wives now i'm convinced that's the reason our world is in such chaotic state right now is because people have not found their place according to the structure and the teaching that the lord jesus christ gives us through the word of god a man will take care of himself nature teaches him that it's an ability to feed clean to provide to take make sure that he's dealt with that he takes care of himself that husband that's a position husband is the position of the married one to the wife that's a position man and woman yes but it's husband as that position wife has that position he has that responsibility now paul compares the power of the commitment between a husband and a wife he he compares it to when you're washed here for an example he talks about it here and making a glorious church without spot or without blemish do you realize that paul compares the power of this commitment that a man has for his wife to the mikvah bath that is the baptism in water for the purpose of regeneration and new life back in old testament days that was the the form that the whoever was coming to the temple before they could present themselves before they could make sure that they were holy and clean they had to go through the mikvah bath and that's what paul attaches to this somewhere somehow paul went back in history discovered through history and the teaching and the old old scholars and the scrolls and whatnot that man what does it take to be clean what does it take to make sure that you're 100 washed and pure that is the meek bath that is where you cleanse yourself in regeneration new life all that old stuff's washed off that's how important the relationship between husbands and wives is in our 2020 culture uh there's a whole lot to be said about that there's an attitude and a spirit that he ain't gonna tell me what to do or who does she think she is or there's a mentality in our day uh of not wanting to be submitted one to another and therefore there can't be a relationship it's either there's a mindset of my way or highway and if that's the case then you've missed the entire word of god all humans simply want relationships okay we want to be accepted we want to to belong we don't want to be alone but the fact if you're going to put things in your world that are frail and fragile if you're going to get them put in order then you've got to submit yourself to the word of god and the teachings of the scripture you know there's something that's going on there's things that's happened if if he would just do this then then i'd know that he loves me or if she would just be more like this i'd know that that she loves me these are statements 100 percent these statements are selfish and flesh desires and they only cause conflict in any relationship and the fact of the matter is is that in a marital relationship paul addresses it here it echoes in 2020 that if you're going to work on your relationship with jesus christ you better make sure your relationship with your spouse is right there's a connection there between a man and a woman and you're going to pass those teachings and those instructions on to the next generation paul addresses the issue in his day because it was very prevalent he had to address the fact that this is not a my right your right i deserve you deserve i justify i qualify it was a fact that if you're gonna truly love jesus and let him work in your life you're gonna have to learn to submit one to another wives and husbands have to learn and understand the relationship between jesus and the church if you husbands and wives if as couples you can get that then you'll with joy realize that salvation comes to you because you submit to the plan and the purpose of god okay it would solve so many problems and issues in the world in our church and you're hit in your family and so forth if you would simply learn how to be submitted one to another notice here the important this is so incredibly powerfully strong ephesians 5 and 31 listen to this for this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and shall be joined unto his wife and they shall they too shall be one flesh this is a great mystery okay but i speak concerning christ in the church nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife as even as himself and the wife see that she reverence her husband now interestingly enough paul recites the torah he goes all the way back to genesis chapter two for this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife and they too shall be one flesh there's a connection between this new testament letter and the beginning of how god created humanity that's a relationship man woman i don't care what 2020 says this is bible this is biblical you need to stand on the bible because it's never changed get that the world the system of our world is going to change and alter depending on who's in control or who's in power that has nothing to do with the bible because they didn't write it god put this in order okay one o-n-e one is the key word just as your god is one the complete power of all of the universe that concept god is one you don't have to go to a conference for that you don't have to call an assembly of leaders to make that decision you don't you don't have to confide in the dark corner who who is this what is that do you think this do you think that you can't negotiate that term because god is one and he has the power of all things we understand our god is one all right that concept has been is is instituted when the husband and wife in a marriage in a relationship come together that's why it's mentioned here in genesis 2 paul goes back to it brings it to the church at ephesus that concept is the listen carefully here that is why god removed a rib from the side of his creation to make a wife for adam okay out of the perfect man that he made adam god made a woman listen carefully adam named her just like he did everything else in god's command he called her eve mother of the living okay it was in this relationship that god established the correct way that a relationship would have to be in order for that relationship to multiply and replenish and multiply the earth okay from eve all of life would come the next generation generations to go it would always come through the female the male cannot produce okay it has to be the female knowing that moses when he wrote the first five books when he went back and he established genesis 1 and so forth he began to write this as the spirit the holy goat the moving of god was giving him the understanding through history he put it in the book of genesis to further give evidence of the power of establishing the order of relationship between a marriage between a man and a woman a husband and wife leaving his father and mother joining his wife establishes another set of father and a mother which in turn establishes another set of a father and a mother which in turn go generational you got to leave your father and mother you become one flesh now you're going to become a father and mother and you're gonna here we go it goes down the line paul writes to this end for the ephesians because if the church if the body of christ is going to continue and move and work in harmony and unity together it's going to be out of understanding relationships between husbands and wives between jesus christ and the church husbands you love your wives wives you reverent your husband that's what's mentioned here okay love and respect love and reverence that's the glue that will hold the marriage together just as the glue that holds jesus to the church you you want to be in the church you can be in the church but it's going to be his way it can't be your way it doesn't matter what anybody else says it doesn't matter what other books or commentaries say it's got to be his because he's one god and he put the plan in motion well i want so much that's why again i mentioned the beginning chapter five here so deep and wide i wanted to take some extra time here to give some clarification for our generation which we live i want you to know that there has to be definite purpose and understanding in the way that we treat each other in the church family and in the physical family okay paul wrote very plainly and clearly here to the church at ephesus that echoes to today come on don't be one of those hear what i'm saying to you as pastor don't be one of those that'll take a part of the scripture and say i agree with it and the other part and say i disagree and try to establish your own doctrine you didn't write neither one of those it is god's word start to finish beginning in alpha omega and you got to accept it all the good bad and the what you don't understand we need jesus we gotta have salvation that only comes through the blood of jesus there is no other name given among men whereby we must be saved as jesus there's no other baptism there's no other way that you can get into the family your sins have to be remitted and washed away that's through the name of jesus christ that's through baptism in that name immersion death you come up new life then the spirit of god has got to be working in your life you can't simply you can't simply go and do your own thing and try to somehow find peace and harmony and joy in this present world it has got to be through the plan of god friend we get that in the bible the word of god that's why we study it we want to understand it closing tonight we're going to pray and my prayer for you is that you would somehow some way you'd get a hold of the the reality of the oneness of god the reality of the church the body of believers that relationship that god established jesus the church and how harmony and it works in unity it connects the spirit agrees there's confirmation here and there and we take that same pattern and as paul was telling the church back at ephesus we understand it in our families and our husbands and wives our relationships one with another inside the church outside the church how we submit to each other how that we get along with folk how that we follow peace with all men that is my prayer tonight is as a church that we get that and as difficult as it might be if you're in the middle of a situation in your marriage your home your family and you don't understand the church whatever you've got confusion questions going on i want to challenge you begin right now as we pray this prayer begin right now to say lord i want to self-evaluate if there's issues in my life let me begin here let me get this right let me get this this mind in place doing so i'm gonna follow you and love you and i'm gonna have a relationship with you pray with me jesus thank you for your word thank you for the promises the the commands the teaching the instruction in your word lord i know sometimes that your word to us lord can be sometimes bitter even sometimes difficult to to comprehend or understand but i believe with all of my heart that the word of god is a healer as well i pray for every individual every family every home lord every individual that's in our study tonight i pray for them i pray for peace in their home i pray god that as they they establish their their footing lord that they understand the power of submitting one to another the power lord of working together in harmony of finding peace and looking to selflessly give one to another and to build and establish homes families marriages relationships and the church i pray for that lord let there be clear understanding in the church let let families lord be healed and established god i pray that words that have hurt and thoughts and ideas and actions that have caused controversy i pray
