Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

A life of giving thanks — the first lesson: the joy of being content

  • He opens the midweek by noting that November talk usually runs to pilgrims and turkey and pumpkin pie, then sets that aside: tonight the church begins a series through the month of November called a life of giving thanks.
  • He names tonight's lesson the first point of the series, and one of the most challenging: the joy of being content.
  • We have more now but we enjoy less; no matter how hard we work and how much money we accumulate, on the whole we are not happier.
  • Somewhere along the line we have entertained the notion that we are entitled to more, and thoughts like that make us discontent.

Exodus 16 — learning to be content with God's provision

  • He has the class read Exodus 16:11-18 aloud around the room — God tells Israel he will take care of them, with food in the morning and in the evening.
  • It did not matter how much they gathered: a handful or a bucket full proved sufficient, as long as they consumed what they gathered according to the command of the Lord and did not carry it over to the next day.
  • In their travels Israel was learning that what God provided could make them content, because it was from the hand of the Lord and he understood what they needed.
  • Complaining comes easily to us — it is almost as if we practice at it, even rehearsing complaints while driving alone.

Scriptures: Exodus 16:11-18

An economy built on dissatisfaction

  • He quotes author Tim Kimmel: keeping the average family unsatisfied is vital to the economic system — to lure us to a product, an advertiser has to create a dissatisfaction for what we already have and a desire for what we don't really need.
  • New golf clubs bought for him by his wife and kids changed nothing about his game; now he only looks better at being bad.
  • The upgrade cycle runs the same way with phones: the one in hand is never the one to have, and discontentment follows.
  • The media's daily messages — you deserve more, new and improved, the updated version, you need to be seen in this — all push toward buying; jobs, promotions and credit cards are built on the same urge to get to the next thing, and a car commercial will approve almost anyone into a payment they cannot carry.

Like Israel — grumbling with a full mouth

  • God brought Israel out, provided for them and made the things around them work for their good, and still they grumbled; he asks the class in what ways we in 2022 are like them.
  • We can sit with a mouthful of food and grumble — not about what we are eating, but about what we are not eating.
  • A father told him of the young man who had proposed to his daughter complaining about the food at the family table with his feet propped up underneath it; the father told his daughter she might want to think twice about that guy.
  • He reads statements for the class to weigh: since God has given us everything, my ungratefulness is a sin — and contentment is attainable, but only with God's help.

Philippians 4 — learned contentment in every state

  • He has Philippians 4:11-13 read aloud — the lesson of a man who has learned to be content: he knows how to be down and how to be up, how to be both full and to be hungry, to abound and to suffer need — I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.
  • He asks why people in other cultures, even suffering ones, often seem happier and more content than we are with so much.
  • From time on the mission field: boys in Haiti seemed very content pulling a little car made out of an oil can, and a shepherd boy in the mountains of Bolivia traded his handmade sling for five pieces of bread.
  • Old missionaries in Bolivia told them the cultural climate changed when Western civilization came in through Hollywood, movies and television — down to cigarette machines copied from a John Wayne movie.
  • We are glad not to chop firewood for heat, walk miles to church, or kill and dress our own chicken — we buy it frozen and cooked — and yet discontentment continues.

Scriptures: Philippians 4:11-13

Greed, gratitude, and knowing whose hand it is

  • The bottom line opposite of contentment is greed — I gotta have more; and the enemy is content for us to settle in the justified middle between contentment and greed.
  • Children do not have to be taught selfishness: among the first words a child learns are mine and no.
  • He has the class name five things God has given them that they are thankful for, pressing past the surface answers; they name life, salvation, the word, the Holy Ghost, cars that work, relationships, the personality and abilities God gave them, and children who have a loving father.
  • Contentment is a result of a mature life: joy in knowing the hand of God is on your life and that what you have came from his hand — the lesson Israel had to learn before the Promised Land could mean anything to them.
  • If we credit our blessings to our own talent and capability, we may misidentify the next blessing; and contentment is tested again when God's blessings go to somebody else and not to us.
  • He closes with Christmas-morning videos — one child delighted with a potato, a two-year-old overjoyed with a banana, another in tears over a cardboard cutout on a string — then leads the church in a prayer of thanksgiving, asking God to help them be content and to rest in him.

month of November we talk about what yeah we talk about pilgrims and turkey and pumpkin pie pecan pie with ice cream got to warm the pie up first and then put the ice cream on okay no we're not talking about none of that but anyway it's a great idea we are going to begin tonight A series through the month of November called a life of giving thanks look at your neighbor and ask him are you thankful what'd they say it depends or they say yeah um interestingly enough now this series there's again there's several aspects of things giving thanks excuse me that we're going to talk about tonight we're going to begin with probably one of the greatest challenging points that I think that most all of us contend with or deal with and that is simply this the joy of being content the joy of being content we have more now but we enjoy less no matter how hard we work and how much money that we accumulate on the whole we are not happier why is that somewhere along the line we have entertained the notion that we are entitled to more thoughts like that make us discontent in our society you can have basically whatever your little heart desires but yet there are so many discontented unhappy folk in our world anybody know somebody don't look around you'll be in trouble before you get home but you know somebody that's just always unhappy brother Nathan thank you for she's not punching you let's go to the Old Testament the book of Exodus I could have said Daniel but you would have gotten more trouble probably the book of of Exodus chapter number 16. let's read a couple of scriptures I want to show you a humanity is that okay Humanity Exodus chapter 16 beginning at verse number 11. through Verse 18 um can we start reading and go around like to start sweetie will you begin please verse 11 chapter 16. of Exodus verse number 11. every while everybody's digging that out everybody knows these this story Exodus 16 11 when you get it to start reading okay Vandy go ahead and start bud hang on everybody got this you following along okay go ahead yes keep going Shane number 13. 14. 15. 16. 17. and 18. Seth go ahead thank y'all so the story that we read here is one about God's provision agreed God told him that I'm going to take care of you did you notice in the text though it did not matter how much they gathered there would be sufficient as long as they consumed what they gathered according to the command of the Lord so if they gathered a handful that would be sufficient if they gathered a bucket full that had to be sufficient as long as they didn't carry it over to the next day now here's the point to that they were learning a lesson in in in their travels how that what God provided for them they could be content with it again ask somebody close to you are you content because we all know hang on I got to get my my word back I put my finger in the wrong place and it all blowed up there we all know that is there anybody here good at complaining come on don't look at your neighbor oh thank you brother off for being honest all right it's almost as if we practice right yeah you're driving by yourself and you just start complaining just so you can get good at your chops right um contentment is not pie in the sky but it is actually an attainable thing you can be content when God begins to bless you and your life is blessed when things happen in your life you can learn the proper position of what God has given to you and you can be content with it to know it's from the hand of the Lord and God understands that I need it and therefore I'm happy with that because God is working all things as brother derons for my good there was an author name's Tim Kimmel he said keeping the average family unsatisfied is vital listen to this to our economic system in order to lure people into a particular product an Advertiser has to create a dissatisfaction for what I already have and make a desire for what I don't really need have you found that to be true in your life a lot of time okay it's it's funny you know I guess we're all all because I'm teaching I'll be the one to speak it but I'd say we're all probably pretty pretty much the same several years ago I had a set of golf clubs that I bought at a yard sale because I was not a golfer and I learned how to play golf on those golf clubs and I learned very quickly how very terrible I was at it and so I began to blame what has to be so my wife and kids they were very kind to uh buy me a set of better golf clubs and guess what happened to my game nothing now I looked better at it but I looked better being still bad and people would even make comments wow great set of clubs that you know that's just one one have you ever had something but decided that if it was the next one you would probably be better at having that one only to find out that you would be better at the next one yeah I'll don't please don't raise your hand unless you just have to gloat over this or boast does anybody have the iPhone 14 it was a wood I don't want to say anything because I know I know a lot of folk that feel like that if it's not that one that whatever the number is then evidently they're not keeping up uh and so they have to go get that one and discontentment I'm not saying anything wrong iPhone 14. I'm simply saying this that there are so many things in our lives that the media the advertisers stores restaurants all of that they they are very good at trying to make you feel dissatisfied discontent with what you have that is what forces them to sell more product you guys do realize that most things in our world are revolve around money most things in our culture especially in 2022 is all based on money and how much they can get from you with that money I got a couple of questions and if you're going to give me some feedback I'd love to it the media they send daily messages that simply always just they permeate the atmosphere with discontentment why is that their sole purpose aside from greed what are they really trying to do we just talked about a couple of there's a couple of other points that I think we need to look at what are they trying to do one more time I think I couldn't hear what are they trying to do is that and everybody see that you can understand that I agree what else sure across the board foreign right okay does anybody here have a job that you wish you had another job I mean what if all jobs paid the same what if everybody in the United States of America made 150 000 a year what would that do for our economic system it what why there's no reason to go to the next and guess what every company understands that and so they're like I want them to go to the next have you ever applied for a job got the job and then a year or two later see that there's a chance for a promotion what do you normally do oh I don't want to do that I'm very content with this five dollar an hour job oh and it's it's just you know everybody's bringing Donuts to the boss you know you're washing the boss's car all these things why because you realize that that advancement is probably a good thing have you ever gotten a job you wanted and when you got it you wish you didn't have it don't answer that name name The Messengers the messages excuse me that you encounter in life that Foster that discontentment what are the messages what words do you hear what comes across the media platforms that you hear you oh that's a deserve more all new what else new and improved very good what else anyone updated version yeah you need to be seen driving this you would look better wearing this those are messages that we may or may not think it's true but it's absolutely true in fact I know that some of us know this and I'm sorry that we do but there are high school kids that are committing suicide because they don't feel like they have everything and they're discontinued lifestyle drives them to take their own lives now that's a shame that our society is so focused on that detail of Life instead of being content they're constantly pushing and prodding um do here's another question do you know somebody maybe you personally know somebody who is the epitome of contentment they're just happy with what they got anybody I'm not saying they're lazy and they don't want nothing else so man I wish I could sleep in the basement for the rest of my life no I'm talking about they're just okay with where they are anybody know somebody like that who is it okay just fine husband anybody else your mom okay someone else now it's not it's probably not that they don't want anything else because you know their their shoes will ultimately wear out their suit of clothes will ultimately need replaced but they're okay at present with what they have that's a rarity in our world has anybody here ever heard of a credit card okay okay is anybody here who doesn't have access to one and you like to travel and buy things it's it's it's near impossible anymore in our culture to move about without some kind of a credit card why what are they trying to do yeah they're wanting you to spend money and it makes sense I mean if you had to have cash to buy I don't know a car it might be a great Challenge and so they tell you you know what just do this and this and there you go and you got it and walk out the door I think they're ready one of my favorite radio commercials that comes on is if you bring home 250 a week you are approved for a new whatever car and I only hear that I'm like that's that's a thousand dollars a month their their car payment is going to be 695 of that they're going to sit in their driveway with a car can't put gas in it can't go to the restaurant and eat can't go to work they're just gonna sit in the car well they're gonna lose see how all this stuff but if you've got that then there you go you can have it um we read tonight in Exodus chapter 16 how that God provided for his people he wanted he told them I'm going to make sure that you can have food that you're taking care of and in the morning they would have this and in the afternoon or evening they would have this they couldn't carry it over to another day except for the Sabbath we know that they had to gather enough and God always made the provision to work for them they had to find somehow some way to make that cause them to be contented because it was from God's hand another question I want to ask you um in what ways are we like the Israelites in that story for an example who grumble man we don't want just bread we want meat man we don't want just that we want this how are we in 2022 like that or are we are we we know that about us don't we and we live with it I'm so good at grumbling we even have one of the drawers dwarfs that was grumpy and grumbly and all of that and we're okay with that guy I'm I'm sorry that was one of those stories anyway um the Israelites God brought them out God provided for them he made a way for them and still they grumbled God made the things around them work for their good to work for their benefit and they still grumble uh have you ever had a mouthful of food Grumble about the food that you're going to be eating next I mean I'm not going back to that other restaurant because this one's good or man this one's really good it's better than the one I had yesterday I'm saying you're eating and you're grumbling about something about what you're not eating and you did eat why don't you just eat what you have I knew a guy one time that his his daughter was had been proposed to by her boyfriend and the guy was like you know he's a nice guy a nice young man he was telling me about this young man and he said A week or so ago he came over at the house to eat supper with us and he started complaining about he didn't think that people should eat certain things on a cow or something he was just one of those guys and he said I'm sitting there looking at this young man saying you are saying that with your feet propped up underneath my dining room table he said I looked at my daughter and said you might want to think twice about this guy because if he's grumbling with his mouth full of food that he didn't put on that table it's very possible that he might have other things to Grumble about you see I'm saying um what statement do you find yourself agreeing with more let me read some stuff I want you to think about this since God has given us everything my ungratefulness is a sin contentment is attainable but only with God's help another one there's nothing wrong with comparisons if I don't become envious or another one having fewer things will make me Godly sometimes we can get caught in these and these different things here and we cause ourselves to miss out on the true blessing that God has for us let's go to New Testament can we do that Philippians chapter number four let's read a few verses here Philippians chapter 4 verse number 11. somebody where do we drop off whoever's next can you start reading there Philippians 4 verse 11 12 and 13. whoever's got it you can read I am there with to be content 12. keep going constructed both to be full and to be hungry but to abound and to suffer need keep going I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me that was good Siri could have read it like that but that's good everybody else notice in that way wait man that's that's cool he's talking about I know how to be down I know how to be up I know how to be good I know how to have all this stuff and then all things I know how to be both full and to be hungry to abound and to suffer need and then verse 13 says I can do all things through Christ the fact of the matter how can we be content in adverse conditions why are people on the other side of the world suffering or why are they happier than we are in so many ways why is it different in other cultures and maybe some of you have first-hand experience in other cultures of course my wife my kids we spent time in a mission field it was very interesting to watch people with not a whole lot but they were seemed to be very content um a couple years ago went to Haiti we brought back the little car made out of a oil can bottle thingy with plastic wheels on it and these boys running around in the street pulling this car and they seem to be very content now I will say they seem to be more content with the dollar they got for that little car I have a Shepherd sling in my office at home that I got from a little Shepherd boy up in the mountains of Bolivia that was herding sheep he brought his sheep hurt across the road brother Smith yelled at the young man he came over he asked him what he had he showed him this handmade sling and I said I wonder if he'll sell it he offered him five pieces of bread and the little boy took it and handed us the sling I've got him office he probably thought a little more about that bread maybe that day why is it that we have so much but yet it appears that the complaints the discontentment continues and yet in other cultures and other areas of the world that they don't really have a lot they seem to be okay is that still true today 2022 now I will tell you this for what it's worth our time in Bolivia they uh the old missionaries who had been there they were some of the first missionaries into the country they uh had said very very distinctly we remember the change in the cultural climate here in this country I said really he said yeah he said when we first came they all dressed pretty much the same they all did it's pretty much the same they all had pretty much the same and then Western Civilization came in through Hollywood and movies and television and stuff and things began to change for an example one of the things I thought brother Smith mentioned was very interesting is that one of the first things he noticed is when they put up the old cigarette machines on the street you put in coins you pull the knob and the pack of cigarettes fall out because that was on one of the John Wayne movies so that's how they became cultured didn't smoke but he did it so they did it here we go of course in Bolivia they still have the I am other the different Indian tribes and they dress accordingly big skirts hats and all that but the younger generation not a lot of that they kind of just walked away from that discontent different things change now I will say in this lesson we're talking about the joy of being content how many are glad that you don't have to go bust firewood just to have heat in your house or maybe you do but you do it now because you think it's a good idea I mean he's glad that you didn't have to walk 13 miles to get to church tonight you were able to ride in a car anybody glad that that you don't have to worry about Salmonella poisoning in the chicken because you didn't have to go kill it and skin it and gut it and hold it hope that it doesn't spoil before you fix it but instead you can go to Sam's and buy it frozen and already cooked you put it in the microwave in 30 seconds you enjoy Mesquite chicken I mean things have changed things have changed and yet what still discontentment one of the things that let me ask it this way what is the opposite what is an opposite word for contentment anybody what is the opposite of contentment discontentment aside from that unsatisfied what else the opposite ungrateful sure what else what is it the bottom line to not being content is greed I gotta have more now we all consider greed to be and I have to have it all and that guy you know that plays the the Nemesis or whatever but greed can be anything from I'm just not happy with this and so I'm just not happy with this wow I can get this you mean I can you know I've made purchases before not out of the fact that I wanted that thing it's simply the fact that I got such a good deal I couldn't turn it down anybody honey if we if we get these cell phones they'll take off fifty dollars off of our bill tonight it'll go up 412 dollars a month from now on but tonight I mean that's just that's like free money maybe I'm the only one that went that route greed have to have something else more not satisfied not content not not glad to have what you have but instead you continue to move forward and in doing so you evade the joy that God has for you you you you kind of skim past the peace of mind that God wants to give you because greed sets in complete complete if you would help me one of the following sentences if only I had this or if only I could be more like this it would help me be a better this if I had this then I could do better at that if I had that I could do better or if I knew this or if I had this Talent or if I had this capability anybody else fight that lord I can't run fast enough I need better tennis shoes well if I just had Michael Jordan's 500 tennis shoes I could I could be so much richer because I'd sell them is there something that you've put out there in front of yourself or in front of your your future that you feel like is driving you to a place that if you could just get that you could all of a sudden turn the corner and everything would be would be different how many of you dealt with your kids for example parents and your children say that well so and so has this so if I had it I think that I'd probably be a lot better at this or that or whatever again if contentment is on this side and greed is on this side somewhere in the between is where the enemy wants us to settle because we can justify that area well I'm not as greedy as so and so or I'm not as unhappy as that one or wow they they complain about this at least I don't complain about that and then we feel better don't we because we have settled within ourselves who we are and how we how we are and how we do things one of the tragedies of today is that we don't have enough Christians who know how to give thanks for what they have already but instead hang on to me for just a moment instead what we have is a group of people that say you may not have much but if you have com a compassionate Christ who can get to an all-powerful Source then everything you have can be okay if churches today were were content with things and and God was blessing and we realized the blessings of the Lord were on the church then I feel like that as a church body as a church family then we could say what we have come from the Lord and he's been good to us therefore we walk in joy therefore we we walk in in the joy that God gives us contentment is a result of a mature life some of you earlier I asked you know somebody who who lives a life of contentment or who's content and some of you meant yeah Mom or husband or whatever uh how come you didn't say that about your teenage kids or your younger kids I'm sorry I'll block all you I know because youth does what to set people youthfulness does what what's one of the first words your child learns to say mine mine then no mine no mine mine no mine no mine mine mama okay then we go back to that Dad Dad okay but by and large children little ones you don't have to teach them how to be selfish you don't have to instruct them on wanting everything that they want and so much more you know it's a man it's amazing how parents learn how their children speak I've heard kids that's what they say and all of a sudden mom or dad responds with this and I'm like they ain't all what they said oh yeah that's what they mean or or this famous one has always is always amazed me and I I might get caught in this Gap too when I'm a grandparent I'm not yet but when the kid's just been obnoxiously bad a lot of the grand they're just tired that's all that they they didn't get their nap today well they finally get one right now we excuse that we excuse it because we are trying to realize in and of ourself that we have to give an answer to why the child is acting that way and that's what every good parent does agreed but then parents go out of their way to make sure that then that that doesn't happen again and so what do they do the next time the child about screams out they just simply respond it's amazing the kids raising parents today that I see I mean they've reprogrammed their their mom and dad they can wank or ooh or goo and man here we go you know you I see that going through the store the grocery store I look around like oh Lord Jesus I'm glad my dad's not here I'm watching the clock make sure we don't go over I want you to think for just a moment would you if you want to write it down that's fine if not then at least consider it I want you to name five things that God has given you that you are thankful for five things that God gave you that you're thankful for now I realized if I were to ask for a show of hands that almost all of you would probably say the basic one you know family health food on the table you know we'd say all of that and that way you get away with it because everybody be like um I want you to think a little deeper than that what is something that God gave you that you are indeed thankful for you may want to share one that's a little deeper than those surface ones yes ma'am life which equals what just living and just doing agreed I mean some people think it a drudgery what else what are you thankful for salvation the word the Holy Ghost assurance now let's think now those are all the church answers now let's just think day to day what are you thankful for cars that work cars that don't break down relationships come on now we're on a come on what else the personality he gave you because it'd be hard to live somebody else's personality you never you weren't raised with that one right very good someone else abilities yeah what else the time you can spend on the rooftop thankful for that now I wouldn't be it but you got to be thankful for things right what else thankful for Seth sorry oh he left oh he's I just want to know I'm thankful for anybody else thankful that children have a loving father good yes sir thankful for music all kinds of music what else own perspective I didn't hear that first that's why I had to go sorry my mind went all perspective I'm what is an alternative and I don't know if that's something that young people hey I found out last week when y'all when the church was so kind to give us Pastor appreciation gifts I found out that I was fleek and I took offense to it because I have no idea what it means do you know what's it mean on what cool on I'm just really sad you know that Vandy oh you teach high school so you you will know that's true that's true I have no idea what that meant I'll look it up and it's not in the dictionary that I could find so I asked the young person and I got one of these definitions and I'm should is that good or I'm not really sure because they didn't say that about her they said it about me and like when I wait a minute and I'll make somebody mad anyway here's the point as we grow in life as we mature we learn there is such Joy in knowing the hand of God is on your life you are following his word and he is leading you protecting you and providing for you at every step to know that if you don't get the next latest and greatest phone you're still okay to know that if you don't have a brand new car in the driveway you're you're still going to be all right to have joy that says Lord what I do have came from your hand therefore I am doubly blessed because you cared enough about me to let me have this the children of Israel keep this in mind when they were walking around and around and around when God was providing food Manna when he was providing meat for them when all the things were going on in their lives they had to recognize beyond the shadow of any doubt that it was indeed the hand of God that was on their life why was that important in what build their faith in what but didn't they are shouldn't they already have had that I mean technically you would think they're God's children Abraham Isaac and Jacob they would already know that but you're right trying to build Faith what else was was happening there what was soon to happen when they crossed over Jordan and then what they were going to have to be thankful joyful with and content with what God was doing and understand that God Was preparing them for the next because they didn't know what that was going to be listen if you've if every generation that you've ever known has come up through bondage what in the world does Promised Land even mean to you it's the same thing happened in New Testament you're going to receive the Holy Ghost after that what does that even mean John the Baptist walks on the scene preaching heaven where does that even I don't even know what that is but because you understand the power of God working in your life daily can anybody explain to me heaven yeah we have just a few verses in the Bible that we we can look to streets of gold Gates or Pearl I don't even know how to explain to anybody one Pearl making a gate only pearls I've ever seen are like this big and I don't have any of them I don't like that's the smallest gate I could ever imagine talk about the camel through the eye of a needle right but yet Heaven's going to have one Pearl and this gate in it how big is a gate huge it have to be so I'm thinking where is that clam that's the only way I understand Pearl what about that grain of sand that's going to make it that's a special piece of sand huh some of y'all are getting messages right now aren't you you're thinking oh here's the point guys and and I'm where I got just a couple minutes from the the joy of being content means we learn from whom blessings come and in return we learn how to thank him for it because the facts are this simply this if I were going to have to depend on God for everything and I was foolish enough to think it was by my talent or my capability then I stand the chance of missing the next blessing that comes from God because I would misidentify it with me instead of him and if I ever think that it's all me and I'm all that and a box of Cracker Jacks I have missed the entire possibility of joy that God wants to give to us I'm convinced in the house of God a lot of times when we come to church we're we're glad to be in church yes thankful that you know the testimony of you know I've been battling all week and I finally made it to the house of the Lord and I'm so glad and and we've we consider that to be contentment but true contentment says there's nobody going to have to tell me to lift my hands and give thanks to the Lord no you're not going to tell me that I'm going to do it because I know from whom my blessings flow there's nobody gonna have to remind me to give thanks for my food because I know it's from the hand of the Lord when I get out of the car and I go into a business or I go on a job or I go to a store I gotta know God your hand is upon me if that's the case then if we'll learn that The Joy then of being content says from whom all blessings flow I walk in that I'm thankful for that last one and then I'll be quiet because we've gotten a couple of weeks we've got a couple another lesson coming in this flavor what about when God's blessings go to somebody else and not you what happens to your contentment then I mean you could be all content look what the Lord's done I'm thankful for it I got huh they got a new car over there thank you Lord for my old beat up um how'd they get a car how'd they get that house oh they come here with a new dress on how they getting that um am I right come on how many has ever been to a a conference or something even in church I mean my kids have learned throughout the years that General Conference or you know conferences that we'd go to in the church sometimes my son would call it the fashion show I said what's that mean well look look I said they ain't looking fleek I don't know the word but he's like no Dad it's like it's a competition I've got this so you need that I got that so you need that when the truth is guys um when we stand before the Lord at the end how will he measure the joy that we've had with our relationship with him he even says there will be some that will stand here and say wait a minute didn't we do this and didn't we do that didn't we do than didn't we do and he's going to look at him and say yeah but it wasn't you it was my name what are they standing at the throne trying to give justification using what their pitiful excuses but Lord I gave him the offering last week so why am I going through this financial trial now Lord's life what does that have to do with it how do you shut up the windows of Heaven by not following the law of God that law applies to all things I'm hoping that through the I do this every November I revert back to thankfulness because as a church we have to learn that living a life of thankfulness a life of giving thanks to God it has to become a mindset an attitude a determination you got to get up in the morning with that Lord I'm thankful you got to through the good the bad the ugly let your mind rest upon the things that you know God is doing in your life if we ever allow discontentment to settle in because we're mad or angry or God where are you or what's going on or then all of a sudden this this game starts happening in our minds and the enemy stands there and goes I'm not going to fire a shot you are wrestling this in your mind if you'll learn I wonder sometimes and again don't don't be mad at pastor but I wonder sometimes if I let the devil come to this Podium and preach about Jesus what would he say he's more convinced about who he is sometimes than we are huh I wonder sometimes if he if he could excuse me I'm here today and sulfur and all the you know whatever to talk about your your your your Jesus do you know that he could do this do you all know that I saw him do this do you realize I watched this do you know this is what he told me do you realize this is what happened do you know this is what he does do you know this and and we would all sit here and say how does he know all of that stuff because he has first-hand experience because he's already been defeated and so many times the enemy's not throwing stones at us we're just simply not happy or content with what God's doing and so our joy of the Lord has not become salvation to us so don't forget the month of November of course a few weeks are going to have Thanksgiving we'll sit around tables and eat pumpkin pie and pecan pie and stuff and turkey but guys it's it's got to become the attitude that you live with daily God we're thankful it doesn't mean that you got to just embrace all the negative trashy junk that happens in life but you don't have to go stomping off and blame God for it or somebody else instead just look for God's hand in everything that happens and give him thanks Lord I Thank you Lord I thank you I thank you all right preparing for this lesson tonight I made the mistake of going on YouTube trying to find contentment or discontentment and I found probably 30 videos that families had taken at Christmas time when their kids opened their Christmas gifts and they didn't get what they wanted man that was the funniest thing it's the two brothers y'all might have seen on those two brothers got Christmas presents from their mom and dad and they videoed and they were all giddy and the one got a potato y'all seen that one the other one had asked for a DS3 and so Mom cut out or cardboard DS3 and put it on a string the little guy with the DS3 just fell all apart life ended planet Earth was was caving in I mean tears as big as a crocodile would cry and he'd do right very random the little guy with the potatoes like I love my potato I saw that said wow the difference or the little two-year-old unwraps a banana huh do you see that one oh my God banana a banana a banana but then a banana then he's standing in everybody's video and he peels the banana and starts eating it oh I got a banana y'all are laughing because it's it's true what humans do stand with me would you the joy the joy of being content thankful now for you parents that the kids most a lot of the young ones are not in here if you play that trick on your kids this this year ah you're on your own um maybe you've already have right you're present this year is you get to pick up all the trash um contentment there has to be has to come a point in your life as a child of God that you recognize from whom all blessings flow and it becomes a lifestyle I know everybody probably in this room has either heard said or spoken or heard somebody say that if the Lord doesn't do anything else for me he's already done enough I wonder how really true that is in your life in my life the good thing about our God is that he's so full of blessings he can continue and continue to bless you anybody here thankful for the goodness of God why don't we spend the next couple of minutes just come on thank you Lord I Thank you for your goodness I thank you for what you do every day in my life I thank you Lord for the joy of the Holy Ghost the power of the cross that works in my life I thank you Jesus for your grace and for your mercy Lord I thank you Jesus for the power of salvation help us tonight as a church Lord help us as families and individuals to be content to know God as long as we're moving forward as long as we have breath to breathe to work jobs to to buy things to sell things to do what we're doing in life in all of life's situations Lord I believe we can be content and through that comes Joy knowing that you are our father where are your children I plead your blood over the church tonight help us God to rest in you every day to hold you Lord to know God that you're holding us and give honor and praise unto you and let the joy of the Lord rest upon us to be content in you you have it all we love you Lord I plead your blood over the church over the church family lead and guide us Lord in the path that would lead us to you we'll love you forever because you are God in Jesus name we pray thank you sweet Lord amen
