Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

The Man at the Pool of Bethesda

  • The preacher has the congregation open their Bibles to John chapter five and reads of the pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem, where a great multitude of sick people — blind, lame, paralyzed — waited for the moving of the water.
  • A certain man had been in his infirmity thirty-eight years; when Jesus saw him lying there and knew he had been in that condition a long time, he asked him, 'Do you want to be made well?'
  • The sick man answered that he had no man to put him into the pool when the water was stirred up, and that while he was coming, another stepped down before him.
  • Jesus commanded him: 'Take up your bed and walk.'

Scriptures: John 5:1-8

The Danger of Staying at the Porch of Mercy

  • It is great living under mercy, but very dangerous to stay stagnant there: the man sat at the house of mercy for thirty-eight long years, at the mercy of other people, waiting for someone to give him a hand or do a miracle for him.
  • Living in complacency is dangerous — Israel had manna in the desert while milk and honey were waiting, and a people who stay too long where they are provided for can become slaves in that place.
  • The first problem is a defective religious system: it keeps people stuck, believing something is going to happen, and unable to put their faith beyond the system.

Stop Blaming — Take Your Bed and Walk

  • The sick man's answer was blame: people blame their mothers and other people for why they have not reached the goal God has for them, and say no one can help them.
  • Stop saying 'I don't have' — you have faith that can move mountains, and you have Jesus Christ.
  • The preacher thanks Jesus for past victories but still believes better things are to come, calling the hearers to go forward, go for more, and take their bed and walk.

Scripture index: John 5:1-8.
