Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
The bronze serpent: admit it, and confront it
- He thanks Pastor and Sister Sloan and the church, and frames the message with psychology's simplified pattern for overcoming an issue: acknowledge you have an issue, and confront your issue — and God knew it before the psychologists did.
- Israel's second generation, close to inheriting the promised land, became impatient on the way around Edom and spoke against God and Moses, repeating complaints they had only heard from their parents: there is no food, we loathe this worthless food, there is no water — though God had given them manna and twice brought water out of a rock.
- The Lord sent fiery serpents and many died; the people confessed, Moses prayed for them, and God told him to make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole: everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live — the bitten had to look at the very thing that hurt them.
Scriptures: Numbers 21:4-9
The works of the flesh, and the serpent lifted up
- The things we face week after week often root in our own flesh and pride; rather than the full measure we deserve, God may send a merciful discomfort meant to drive us to repentance.
- Galatians lists the works of the flesh: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these — but the outward acts are only symptoms of the condition.
- A relationship with God is not about finding what the Bible does not forbid; it is about drawing close to a holy God, and holiness shows from the heart, not from the clothes.
- As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so the Son of Man was lifted up: he who knew no sin became sin, and every look at the cross should show us the sin and flesh of ours that he carried.
Scriptures: Galatians (book-only, as spoken); John 3:14
The altar exercise: lay the issue on the cross
- He asks everyone to take a sticky note and admit the thing they struggle with — adultery, fornication, uncleanness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, jealousy, wrath, strife, heresies, envy, drunkenness, addictions — and to lay it on the cross or on the altar before God.
- John the Baptist, Jesus and Peter all opened their ministries the same way: repent. Confronting the flesh means admitting the issue and trusting it into God's hands — and it may be the thing you have to pray through every week, and that is okay.
Nehushtan broken: life after death
- In 2 Kings 18, King Hezekiah removed the high places, broke the pillars, cut down the Ashira, and broke in pieces the bronze serpent Moses had made, because Israel had made offerings to it: the issue itself had been substituted for salvation.
- Facing the issue is not salvation; left hanging in front of you every time you pray, it blinds your eyes. Repentance is dying — and there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
- Romans 8:11 promises that if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit: you do not have to live in condemnation or failure, but in life and freedom in the Spirit.
- He leads the church in repentance and victory, calling them to pray with one another: once the issue is left under the blood, it does not define you.

things of God we from Sunday school to greeters to to production to music that stuff it doesn't happen because somebody's just like hey I like to talk to people because honestly after like five minutes you're like I'm I'm done talking to people but it or I like sitting in a box back here and burning up that's it's not it's it's to be a part of the body of Christ to minister thank you guys so much for doing it can we give them a hand production music for submitting to the spirit of almighty God thank you Pastor sister Sloan for allowing me to trusting me to uh Preach Today I will say that I have a beautiful wife all right everybody else look away I was just kidding I just get and and in in marriage you've learned a thing or two she's taught me that I had I I mean I knew it before but she's helped me right with social situations I don't know is every guy can say amen I think I was probably worse right if y'all are like man he was just acting strange just because she didn't tell me what to do it wasn't on purpose and I just didn't know but in in marriage I I feel like I I've understand better what God was talking about when he compared the church to his bride I feel like you know like and I'm sure I'm sure as those of you that have kids that you understand better what God means when he says I'm your father and that personal relationship with God uh in in that I want to say thank you Church you're the bride of Christ thank you for allowing me here because that's not something I take lightly right if I mess up God I gotta answer to God right so I'm sorry y'all are nice he is nice let's just but in in this world we come across a whole lot of things uh psychology it's been it's been a science or a practice for the last hundred years or so okay I love it I dabble in Psychology uh some of you guys are are going for actually learning it uh instead of dabbling in it and what I'm going to say you may get offended by okay I am sorry all right but in Psychology I'm going to way over simplify something all right in Psychology they have they figured out there's a pattern to overcoming something an issue there's a pattern okay and the pattern being acknowledge you have an issue and confront your issue very simple now there is a whole lifetime of work in those two statements there okay so I'm not I love psychology I love that but that can be that can be summarized there uh and and and I believe that learning about people and it's about like going to the doctor we should we should probably try you know we should try our best to be our best but would you believe that God knew that before psychologists I know right this is amazing right uh in in the Old Testament we find a people they're they're called the children of Israel they were nomadic people that had that were Nomads in the Middle East until a famine here and then they moved down to Egypt a few hundred miles down to Egypt to the Nile Delta and it was a land and the Bible calls it the land of Goshen and that land was very fertile they grew they they were there for a few hundred years they multiplied became in the millions and then the the Kings the politicians uh they got scared of them and so they wanted to enslave them figured they were probably Democrats but I'm just kidding I'm sorry I can't I can't make that joke I was making a joke y'all I was just going to leave it on as politicians right YouTube just blocked us all right anyway I was making a joke not not actually serious about that but they they thought that Dakota got it uh they thought that these people are going to rise up and they're going to destroy us so we're going we're going to enslave them okay we're going to come against them and they did and then these people they decided that they were going to cry out to the god of their father Abraham when they cried out God sent a deliverer and we get the story of them crossing the Red Sea we get the story of the stories of the ten plagues we uh we get a lot of biblical knowledge but in that time of Deliverance God had told them you're going to a Promised Land okay and in that land this is what I've given your father Abraham this is where you're going now this was only I don't know let's say a two-week walk all right like seriously a two-week walk these guys were there trying to get there for 40 years in this time in the wilderness that was called the Wilderness because it was just the desert they were wandering around the desert for 40 years we get a a bucket load of message material out of this time because it was there for it was there as a school Master for them guess what we can use it as a school Master for us and they they came across a lot of weird things in numbers chapter 21 they they were sitting here and they were they were getting so close to inheriting this land in fact they were the second generation that were going to inherit this land the first generation that came out of Egypt they rebelled against God killed them and so this second generation honestly did not even remember Egypt not not in their adult life because they weren't adults and we find that in Numbers chapter 21 verse 4 uh it says from Mount hore they set out by the way of the Red Sea to go around the land of Edom and the people became impatient on the way how many of y'all been impatient you ever done any good things when you were impatient anybody anybody done anything that were like you know I was impatient and done that but it worked out for the best probably not now Lauren asked me this week she was like what's what's are you all right what's going on I was like I just got like so much to do this week like it was just one of those weeks right and she's like well I was like why she was like well you're just impatient I was like oh right there's nothing and and and in that right I can understand these guys have been wandering around this is you're 39 or 40. they're ready to do it and everything they go up against there's a closed door there's just a closed door every every path they try to take that that those people come against them say we're going to kill you if you come this way if you come into our land and they became impatient it's funny how 3 000 years ago or so that people were the same foreign thing I think people are basically people all right like I people are about the same all right it doesn't matter where you're at verse five the people spoke against God and against Moses they said why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness for there is no food and no water and we loathe this worthless food in their impatience they did something that they did not mean to do they spoke against God and Moses and in that they started saying something they repeated something that they did not even understand they repeated they said why have you brought us up out of Egypt these guys didn't even remember what Egypt was like they were kids if that if even born then when they when their parents were in Egypt so they had no clue what it was like yet they were repeating the thing that their parents had taught them and I'm not going to teach them family teaching anyway I'm gonna leave that there they were I don't have kids so y'all can wait say later I told you so all right so then they said there is no food but it was actually food that we like because God had given them provision he had made a way he'd given the Manna they're like well it's we just don't like it so I'm not going to pick out any little kid and say they were acting like any little kid here but and then they said there is no water but they had forgotten that twice before and and once right before this that God had caused water to come out of a rock in the middle of the desert so in there impatience they they started sinning and verse 6 the Lord sent fiery servant serpents among the people and they bit the people so that many people of Israel died now God had every right to just wipe them off he's like I killed your parents I'll just wipe you off too but he didn't he actually sent them a merciful punishment if there is such a thing instead of wiping them out he said I'm going to send something that's going to afflict you all right I'm going to I'm going to give you a punishment but it's not going to be the full measure of what you deserve is that fair and so in that they they learned their lesson real quick verse 7 and the people came to Moses we have sinned for we have spoken against the Lord and against you pray to the Lord that he take away the serpents from us so Moses prayed for the people they were quick to repent and Moses he had already he'd been doing this for like 80 years at this point like he'd been doing this forever and he's like 139 and a half he's like God just killed me now I don't know he's like but they had sinned against him but he had to pray for for God to give them Mercy but in that in verse 8 God said the Lord said to Moses make a fiery Serpent and set it on a pole and everyone who is bitten when he sees it shall live so Moses made a bronze Serpent and set it on a pole and if a serpent bit anyone he would look at the bronze Serpent and live Brother Gibson you got those snakes back there I just I'm just kidding y'all laughs I love object lessons but I ain't about that life all right he took and he made a brown snake and he put it up on a pole all right now I don't know if it was a cross or not but it was a poll he put it up on there and he says when you're bitten you're going to have to look at the thing that hurt you so psychologists say admit you have a problem and confront your problem so every time they're bit and they're struggling with something they have to remember I did that to myself now I gotta look at it and it's going to save me I've gotta confront it I've got to I've got to realize okay now I want I want to be careful here because I do not want I do not want us to think about everything that comes along as a as a punishment okay that's not what I'm saying but there are things that we face week after week after week after week after week and year after year after year that we bring on ourselves and the whole root of it is our flesh the whole root of the issue is us because our desire says I want this or I want to feel this way or I want to do that way and I want to do this and God says you and your pride should be dead but I'm gonna send a little something here to make you maybe a little uncomfortable that maybe will drive you to repentance that will maybe drive you to an altar to pray you and your pride oh come on y'all I haven't I what I seen something the other day from a from a panel in Australia okay now they don't have the religious Liberties that we have and there was a there was a man being prosecuted for saying something against a sin and there was a man that said I was raised on this panel he said I was raised in a Christian home but you won't ever see me repenting about for who I am I was about I was praying for him I was duck and I was like oh Lord Jesus I have never seen that much pride stoled up in somebody I have never seen that much oh I it turned my stomach y'all because this man had the audacity to say I am not repenting for who I am I am not sorry for the things I've done to me oh my Lord Jesus you see you see our flesh causes us to do we are in and and it's just I don't know if it's a defect from the fall of Man it is it's an issue that we have and and Galatians puts it like this now the works of the flesh are evident sexual immorality impurity sensuality adoption idolatry sorcery enmity Strife jealousy fits of anger rivalries dissensions divisions Envy drunkenness orgies and things like these things that died that dwell up in our hearts and it says it's okay if I want to do this it's okay if I wanna fill in the blank it's okay what's the motive behind it where does that come from and Jesus done something for us all right now these are just examples of sins these are just things that we we look at and we see and and these are just named things that that we we find that are common and we'll look at the Bible and say well the Bible doesn't say this the Bible says you don't do this the Bible said doesn't say don't do this right but that is not the form of a relationship the point of a relationship is to draw closer together the point of a relationship is to say how close can I be to that person or how close can I be to my God a holy God is not one that is going to entertain an Unholy person now we can put on the best clothes and we can put on the best smile and all that good stuff and it doesn't do a thing in the world y'all I have I've seen the extremes I've seen people dressed from head to toe and how it they they might be dressed like an Amish person okay but they're ungodliness shows through more deeper and more than somebody that's that that just ain't dressing right all right like for whatever reason all right that it's it's right here it's a symptom her actions or things are a symptom of our flesh Jesus did something in John chapter uh in John chapter 3 right John writes he says in Jesus or as Moses lifted up the certain Wilderness so must the son of man be lifted up so what he done was he took that flesh he that knew no sin became sin he lifted it up and and he was put on a cross now there's a lot of things here but in that every time we look at across every time we look at the sacrifice that Jesus made we should see our sin we should see our Humanity we should see our flesh we should see our issues because that's what he done he didn't do it he took hours he took our problems he took our our he quite literally took them and took our flesh and sacrificed himself for us now I have in in your pews and and this will take just a moment all right but in or in your seats there should be some sticky notes and and you guys may have to pass I tried my best to or the kids helped me and they got it all lined up and uh and hopefully we got pins and if you need some more I got some more if you need something just okay if you if you need a sticky note everybody should have at least a sticky note in hand okay and I want I want us to do something all right in this this is a hard thing I really struggled on how how to do this but in knowing and laying the stage for this we all struggle with something I looked I I just Googled a list of because I couldn't find like a comprehensive listing in the Bible there was a whole bunch of what I read but there was there's a whole list and there's more of things that are quote unquote sin I want you to prayerfully take that thing I don't know what it is I'm I'm not a prophet thank God right I don't want to see all that but take that thing that you're struggling with and the first step I want you to admit it and you you may not feel comfortable writing it down okay especially if it's like you know like confessing a murder maybe we just don't need that proof in here today all right you may not feel comfortable with that and that's okay put it here visualize it right in front of you and if you would would you stand with me because there is there's there's a step to this there's a purpose to it this condition that we have all the things the things right in front of you are just symptoms of it okay and Jesus and and as you feel comfortable Duran if you don't mind sir uh as you feel comfortable I want you to put it on a cross or put it on the altar God this was my adultery this was my fornication this was my own cleanliness or my own holiness this is my covetousness God this is my idolatry this is my witchcraft this is my hatred this is my jealousy emulations this is my wrath and my strife this is my heresies God these are my end beings these are my wickedness and my drunkenness and my addictions these are my unrulinliness God I lay them before you John the Baptist Jesus and Peter all opened their Ministries the same way with repent and this is not guys I'm telling you I I I I I prayed and I prayed and I struggled and I struggled with this because this is confronting our flesh you take it and lay it before God if you truly want to admit you have an issue and you put it before you God this is my issue and I need you to take it from me I need to know that I am trusting my issue in your hands I need to know that that I am relying on your mercy this may be the thing that you have to pray through every week and that is okay you're human your flesh this may be the thing that you can't you can't see past every time you pray the devil's in your ear hey what about this you did this in your past and as you guys bring it up if you don't mind let's gather around these altars and let's let the spirit of repentance to grab a hold of our hearts Jesus I I acknowledge that you are God I acknowledge that I am not and I say that I am sorry for my seeing God I am sorry for my issues Lord I am sorry for my sincere everyone in here we're all human we've all got an issue we've all got a problem you are not alone this is your it is sin is just a symptom of humanity now if we can come on everybody Ever every eye closed every hand lifted let's repent Jesus I'm sorry God I I apologize I wholly repent of my wrongdoing I holy repent and I acknowledge that you take it on yourself and that you sacrifice this for me foreign and I am not now now hurry up hurry up we gotta repent quick today because Izzy's bringing me something I found something in studying this in second Kings chapter 18. King Hezekiah he he was he was a young man when he started being King okay and he went in and he cut the Bible says he removed the High Praise places and he broke the pillars and he cut down Ashira these are the idols these are the sin and he broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made For unto those days the people of Israel had made offerings to it it was called Hezekiah he realized something that our issues were becoming we were substituting them for our salvation that is not your salvation your issue is not your salvation facing it is important but there is life after death you see repentance is just dying oh you see there he is therefore no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus for the law of the spirit of life has set you free in Jesus Christ from the law of sin he was pulling down every struggle and you think because you've overcome it once or twice that that's your salvation but it's not you see Jesus didn't just hang on a cross he died if you leave it hanging and you leave it right in front of you every time you go to pray and every time you come to church and you leave it right in front of you it blinds your eyes but but Romans 8 11 if the spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you he who raised Jesus from the dead will also give life to your moral bodies through his spirit that dwells in you I am telling you today there is life after death you lay it on the Altar and you say God let your spirit fill me you lay it open the Altar and you see God let your anointing revive me you do not have to live in condemnation you do not have to live in failure you can live in life in the spirit and the freedom and the lip and the Liberty your sacrifice didn't save you his Spirit came and it saved you come on somebody lift up your hands lift up your heart and let the spirit of almighty God to save you let it set you free from your condemnation let it set you free from your issue let it set you free from your hurt together come on somebody reach over to your neighbor reach over to your neighbor put your hand on somebody every hand in this place every eye should be close God I've repented and therefore I am set free I need your spirit to bring life into me Jesus Jesus Hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah come on somebody recognize the power of a risen savior recognize the power of a risen savior come on repentance works come on repentance does move repentance does come on Lord I know you've forgiven me of it Lord I know that you've washed me Lord and right now Jesus it will not identify me Lord God but it will allow me Lord to let your power and your truth work in my life come on lift your voice right now to Heaven every voice thank you Jesus for the power of the blood for the power of the blood thank you Jesus come on the forgiving power of the name of Jesus oh that's right come on come on somebody claim the victory today come on claim the victory today in the name of Jesus I am an overcomer through the word of testimony I am Overcomer because of the blood of Jesus that's washed and cleansed me come on in the name of Jesus that's right come on if you've got the Holy Ghost you ought to be praising God right now come on he has filled you with his spirit he has filled you with his Spirit Come On In The Name of Jesus in the name of Jesus holy holy is the Lord God holy is the Lord God Worthy is the Lord God Worthy is the Lord Jesus oh that's right come on salvation is found in the name of Jesus in the name of Jesus in the name of Jesus I will love you Lord I will trust you Lord I will serve you Lord Hallelujah Hallelujah Jesus Hallelujah come on that's right reach out to Heaven Lord I've given it to you can't go back I've given it to you Jesus to me yeah there is Victory Lord I am an overcast to me victory in the name I Won't Go Back Jesus Jesus Jesus yes Lord yes Lord yes great God yes great God yes Mighty God we love you I oh come on get a hold of somebody around you and just pray with them would you ask him come on would you pray with me that I could have victory over this it doesn't Define me but I push it away I stand upon the world come back repentance has cleansed in Washington come on the name the name the name the name amaze us that's right come on there is victory in the church victory in the name of Jesus be for your presence how I love you Lord how I Need You Jesus can't go back away it used to be yes Lord yes Lord
