Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

Sent to Search the Land

  • The Lord spake unto Moses, saying, send thou men, that they may search the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a ruler among them.
  • Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan with this charge: get you up this way southward and go up into the mountain; see the land, what it is, and the people that dwelleth therein, whether they be strong or weak, few or many; and what land it is that they dwell in, whether it be good or bad; whether it be fat or lean; and be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land.
  • After forty days they came back with the report: we came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey, and this is the fruit of it — nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled and very great, and we saw the giants there.
  • We were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight — and out of that report the preacher takes his subject: why me?

Scriptures: Numbers 13

Who Am I? It Is Who I Am

  • Moses's parents defied the king's order, kept him three months, and set him afloat in the Nile; Pharaoh's daughter found him and raised the Hebrew child as her own, and God had his hand on his life.
  • Forty years on the run, he is keeping a flock of sheep that were not even his — they were his father-in-law's — on the backside of the desert, in Horeb: dry up, lie waste, destroyed; and it is there that God calls him, at the burning bush, and tells him to take off his shoes.
  • Moses asks the question every age has asked — who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt? Abraham asked it, and Esther stood and asked it, and David asked it running from Saul: why me?
  • God's answer turns the question around: it is not who you are, it is who I am — the I am that I am, the God who had them keep you three months and brought you through Pharaoh's house, the God who does the calling and sets up for greatness.
  • The preacher's own father, as a boy walking by a house, heard a woman on her knees pray, oh God, save Darrell, and it did something to his heart; God had his hand on him through nine different high schools, a chemical engineering degree, a call to preach, Bible school, and the day he saw Judy across the street and told his friend, I'm gonna marry her.

Halal: Praise God in His Sanctuary

  • David found himself in the court of the Philistine king and acted mad; the preacher brings out the Hebrew word under it — halal, the clamorous, foolish-seeming praise of the psalm he calls for: praise ye the Lord, praise God in his sanctuary, praise him in the firmament of his power, praise him for his mighty acts.
  • God does not want our praise so pretty every once in a while; halal is praise that does not care what anybody around you thinks — when was the last time you shouted your hair down, or were the last one to leave the altar?
  • His own church began in a little forty-by-seventy building on 9th Street, then McKinley Street, where they ran the aisle and the old floor would rock and someone had to hold the piano so the songbook would not fall down; seventeen years in the new building, they have gotten sophisticated and lost some of their halal — God, make us again.

Scriptures: Psalm 150:1-2

Called Out of Darkness to Be Worshipers

  • The book of Jude talks about the angels leaving their first habitation: they were to be worshipers in heaven, but a third of them, along with Lucifer, wanted to be worshipped instead of worshipping, and God cast them out of the light into the darkness.
  • God calls you out of the darkness into his light for the opposite errand: why me? Because he called you to be a worshiper.
  • He tells of the old Baptist pastor in Dallas who as a boy watched the churches let out on Sunday night — the Baptists dancing into the street, the Methodists and Presbyterians joining them to shout unto the Lord — and whose warning was the word 'used to'.
  • The closing question he leaves with the church: what qualifies you to praise the Lord? Folks, we can never lose this.

Scriptures: Jude (book-only, as spoken)

Canaan which I give which I give which I give which I give to the children of Israel of every tribe their fathers shall you send a man everyone a ruler among them verse 17 and Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan and said unto them get you up this way southward and go into the mountain see the land what it is and the people that dwell in there and whether they be strong or weak few or many and what land is that landed that where they dwell and whether it be good or bad and whether they dwell in them whether they dwell in tents or strongholds whether it's fat or lean whether there's we give you all the glory and everyone said amen man god bless you you can be seated why me oh why me I mean you know the story Moses's parents are under orders to throw their newborn son into the river but instead they defy the king's order they build a little arc and put him in the bulrushes and three months they've kept them and now they set him afloat in the Nile and of course you know Pharaoh's daughter finds him and raises this Hebrew child as her own he grows and God makes away and has his hand on the life of Moses and it isn't long until he begins to see the unfair treatment of the Hebrew children he slays the man and now he's on the run the first 40 years of his life he lives as a miracle but the next forty years we find him in a little different situation notice when God found him first of all he was keeping a flock of sheep that weren't even his they were his father-in-law's he have not been super successful as 40 years all he was doing his watch his father lost sheep the scripture said that he was on the backside of the desert now I know the deserts bad but I don't think I've ever been to the back side of the desert I don't I don't think there's a new subdivision they're called the backside of the backside in the background in the extremity in Horeb as the mountain of God you know what the exciting thing is I looked at what horrid means Horeb means dry up lie and waste to be destroyed Antonia Moses was a mess but God called him and said I've got you right well I can use you right well I need you I don't know what you've been going through but I'm gonna tell you something you're the right person at the right time for the kingdom God has his hand on you God has his hand on your family and God has his hand on this shape well thank you all 10 of you god bless you and notice what he says I mean he sees the burning bush gods there's take it off his shoes and this is what he says Who am I or in other words why me why am I to go to Pharaoh why am i to bring the children of Israel out of Egypt why am i to take them to a land that flows with milk and honey everyone in every age asked this question Abraham had asked many times why me Esther stood there and said why me I've come to the kingdom for many for such a time as this David why me why am i running from Saul I don't know your situation but you man said Who am I why why me I just rather stay in the background on the backside of the desert I'd rather just dry up and lie and waste don't you know God's got a plan for you don't you know you're not here by accident don't you know that God's working on you don't you know in this service God's got a plan for you it's not Who am I God said why me God said it's not Who am I is Who I am who shall I say shoot me the I am that I am it's not who you are into I am it's not what you can do I choose to work with you that are the gal that holds the power I'm the God that does the calling I'm the God that sets up for greatness come on somebody help me you know what he's saying I am the God that help your parents conceived you I am the God that encouraged them behind you for three months I am the God that had them build a little heart and put it in the river I am the God that comes out a little out the drunk drift into Pharaoh's daughters you and she washed herself I am the God that calls Miriam to follow you and when Pharaoh's daughter a sister no sir God brought you Jack about your own mother than her I am that God I don't know your story I want you to know he is that God for you why me I don't know why it's our beautiful family there's five of us I want you to know on my mom's side I'm fortunate raisin about my dad he's first-generation 15 year old kid having to be walking by a house and it was a woman that he was friendly with and she had got down to pray and he walked by she was she was on her knees and she said oh god save Darrell I want you to know it did something to the heart of that fifteen-year-old he was a no papi but God said I'm the I am I'm the one that can cause someone to play when you're hungry you know I was harvest tender cuz he lost his four-year-old baby brother God's timing had set everything up his daddy went to nine different high schools because his father followed construction but everywhere he went Darrell's not who you are it's Who I am I've got my hand on it you can't get away from me now I'm done there God hasn't forgotten about you he set everything in motion so they do it be here tonight hearing this preacher praise God's got his hand on you you may say why me you don't know my pastor I won't tell you don't know my god he was a chemical engineer at LSU straight A's God put a call on his life why me so he goes and he's a B student in Bible School and God works on his life and then all of a sudden he starts evangelizing and now he's preaching and he he starts following this young evangelist named Judy Mulvaney never cats eyes on her but he just said maybe say uh brother down because you gotta meet sister Judy and they tell sister Judy sister Judy you got to meet brother down here my dad was head of General Conference in Memphis and he was running with a friend and he said I he said when you see Judy dowdy or Judy Mulvaney point her out to me and he said okay goes well in fact there she is across the street dad took one look and told his buddy I'm gonna marry her and went right over there and asked her out and five kids later they were still in love to the moment she took her last breath why me God's got his hand on you everybody in here has got a story and I don't know about your story but I'm gonna put a dance on mine cuz I got a dad that made a decision one day to serve God i'ma tell you something you're gonna make a decision tonight if the Lord tarries is gonna generations he's the I am you just don't know who you are yet you don't know God's plan God's design all of God's purpose say what wasn't it well planned out for you not really I just walked by faith and not by sight and if you wonder what I'm doing I'm just waiting a little bit right here on the Lord because there's something in my spirit right now that I think that what I preached before I can move on and I may not get it back but there needs to be a worship there needs to be a praise there needs to be a dance that God has his hand on your life hi hello hallelujah you know I've always been amazed without Scripture where the Bible says that David was in a cashless court and the Bible says that he found himself there now realize all the story with David ah I mean I just I can't even begin to fathom people like Joseph or David who God found and gave vision and dreams and promises and yet all the things that they went through look at Oh David one day he's slaying a giant everybody's praising him he's the king son-in-law the next thing he knows he's having javelins thrown out and Pete priests are being slain in the wake of his visit until he finds himself in a Justice Court that old Philistine King you know you know the one I'm talking about those riders and translators they put in there that David didn't save himself mad you know we always act like well David acted like he's nuts have you ever met those people one person that pastored a really small church he told me one time I went to a priest trying to help but he said you know what people are nuts I said well if you think about that then I said probably why you don't have any people cuz I said we're all little money so he goes and you know we we preached about it hundreds of times her people he acted crazy like he's tricking that Philistine King but when you look at that fainted to be mad it's halal in the Hebrew give me Psalm 150 people behind the black glass I feel like I'm playing Deal or No Deal this was the ultimate banker said I picked the right box the Halal when he same ed is the same hello when he said hello oh praise ye the Lord praise God in His sanctuary praise Him in the firmament of his power praising first mighty acts now I know you don't get it yet but I'm going to tell you you know what David was - they thought he was man but God said that's ha ha ha that's clamorously hi I'm gonna tell you something I don't think God wants our price so pretty every once in a while you gotta get low quality you know why cause the two years I don't know about you but I know where he brought me from I know what it is for me come on sis come on my brother come on through come out through come on through why me cuz come coach you to be a worshiper 70 building that we crammed a bunch of folks in to hear me apostolic center at you you could pick two of those auditoriums on our platform just flip it over and that's where God brought us from and we were always always asking God for big things in a new building all that he gave him that giving us let me tell you what we've walked into that building and 17 years later we still lost some of our halal we've got sophisticated we've got well-dressed now God has blessed us we don't sound like we used to shout we don't carry like we used to carry but I want you to know God's gonna do something in that tune I'll tell you what God wants to do something here tonight God make us again if you have to bring your sin to covet caused all kinds of distress hi everybody hear what I'm saying come on when's the last time you shouted your hair down when's the last time you walked out of here soaked from head to toe cuz you gave God a praise David said I'll do it till I'm foaming the mouth I'll do it until I can't do it any longer come on over go how you feel what I'm feeling come on come on shout with the boys that's what I'm talking about I worried about that God's doing the work where's the
