Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

What shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

  • The head text prices everything against the soul: what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? — and the whole sermon is that question asked of every man in the house.

Scriptures: Matthew 16:26

Watchmen upon thy walls

  • God has set watchmen upon the walls of Jerusalem who shall never hold their peace day nor night: the man God sets to watch does not get to be silent about what he sees.

Scriptures: Isaiah 62:6

Gehazi: bought in secret

  • Gehazi ran after Naaman and took the silver and the changes of garments his master had refused, and hid them in the house: the servant's secret greed undid the prophet's free gift, and the leprosy of Naaman cleaved unto him.
  • The little foxes spoil the vines: it is the small, tolerated takings — a little leaven, the dead flies in the apothecary's ointment — by which a servant of God is quietly bought.

Scriptures: 2 Kings 5:20

Samson: sold by degrees

  • Samson told Delilah all his heart and woke up bound in the house of his enemies: a man is sold in pieces, a little ground at a time, long before he is ever delivered over.

Judas: thirty pieces of silver

  • Judas went to the chief priests and covenanted with them for thirty pieces of silver: the title text — a man can set a price on the Lord himself and walk away thinking he made a bargain.
  • The pieces of silver are whatever a man takes in exchange for his soul and his calling; the question of the sermon is what yours are.

Scriptures: Matthew 26:14-15

Where their worm dieth not

  • Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched: he delivers the verse entire again and again as the sermon's measure of what a soul is worth.
  • He walks the house through the scripture's own descriptions of hell and judgment to fix the stakes before the close.

Scriptures: Mark 9:44

The accursed thing in the tent

  • Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon was given for a possession — yet one man took of the accursed thing and hid it in the earth in his tent, and one man's hidden price troubled the whole camp.

Scriptures: Joshua 1:3

The altar call

  • He closes calling the church family, and the young people by name of their need, to come and cry out: what will you give in exchange for your soul?

matthew 16 one passage of scripture it's very familiar i won't say anything tonight that you haven't already heard i've heard you preaching that you get and i know you are fed well but i'm just going to remind you of a few things tonight matthew 16 1 passage verse 26 for what is a man profited if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul that's a question and the second question or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul i want to preach to you a simple thought 30 pieces god bless you you may be seated thank you for standing for the reading of the word tonight there are certain professions in the world that we live in today that have a responsibility attached to them this responsibility is uh binding by law that if they don't fulfill this responsibility that you could take this individual to court and if you could prove that they were lacking in this area you could file a lawsuit against them they could serve prison time and they could pay millions of dollars in fines depending on whatever the offense was this term this responsibility is called fiduciary responsibility fiduciary responsibility is putting another person's interest or another party's interest before your own boards have this responsibility to their shareholders lawyers have this to their clients the people that they represent financial advisors have this to individuals that they sit down with and talk with these individuals are bound by a responsibility to look at this client or this person they're representing and give them the best possible advice for their situation they need to tell them what's best for them they need to tell them how they're going to get from a to z they have to look him in the eye and be completely honest with him they can't work on their own behalf they have to work on this party's behalf they have to tell this individual what's going to advance them what's going to be best for them if that client can prove that this individual did not fulfill this responsibility then they can take action against this person there are people in the kingdom of god that have such responsibility there are individuals in the kingdom today that they're bound to tell you what's best for you that they have to give it straight to you that they can't serve their interests they can't do what they want to do one of these individuals is found in isaiah chapter 62 and verse 6. it says i have set watchmen upon thy walls o jerusalem which shall never hold their peace day nor night a watchman on the wall that shall speak day and night that shall never hold his peace i know that this job seems easy i know that he just stands here for 40 minutes or an hour every service and it just flies by because he has a natural talent and natural ability to communicate but there's a responsibility that falls upon the man that stands behind this sacred desk to deliver to you what's best for you and that can be very complicated and that can be very hard that can cause friendships and that can make situations very awkward but we're bound by the word of god when i stand up here i don't get to tell you funny things that i think you would enjoy to get to heaven but there's a word that i'm bound to that i've got to preach to you what's best for you according to the word of god i can't preach to you what's best for me so that makes things awkward i remember a story by an individual in our organization he was a missionary to india at that time i went over and saw him his name was brother jeremy lang and he was working in the country of india and i went over there with actually pastor wilson and a few other gentlemen and i remember brother jeremy lane telling us one time he said you you know one of the hardest things it is for me to preach to these individuals he said man it's not holiness and it's not jesus named baptism and it's not it's not oneness and it's it's not me he named several things he said the hardest thing for me to give to these individuals for me to teach and preach to these individuals is tithe because they make five cents a week and they make 10 cents a week and they make a quarter and they live off five dollars a month and what we make in the states they make if they're lucky in a year and i have to look at them and tell them you need to bring ten percent of that and an offering to the house of god he said that's one of the hardest things that i have to preach to these individuals it would be very easy for jeremy lang to go ahead and cut that out and say well wait a second god i preached oneness to him and i preached jesus name baptist baptism to him and i preached the infilling of the gift of the holy ghost to him i just skipped this one little part but no there's a responsibility that falls upon that man's shoulders when he accepts the call to be a watchman on the wall he cannot choose when he wants to hold his peace he's got to preach the word and he's got to do it day and night no matter the consequence no matter the outcome no matter what it does to his reputation or his interests there's some transactions that take place in the word of god that i wonder if they would have had an individual acting on their behalf if they would have had an individual that took on the load that was there when they committed it if they would have spoke up if they would have done something different there's some transactions in scripture that just doesn't make sense second kings chapter five is one of these transactions and verse 20 but gehazai the servant of elisha the man of god said behold my master hath spared naaman this syrian and not receiving at his hands that which he brought let me let me paint the picture and i know you already know it but please uh naaman has leprosy he hears that there's a man of god that can kill him no excuse me that's wrong not killing healing healing a man of god that can heal him he goes to him and he says go dip seven times in the jordan i don't want to do that somebody speaks up well why don't you go ahead and try it it's no big deal well he goes ahead and does it comes out healed completely of leprosy goes back to the man of god and says hey i've got all this silver i got all this gold i got all these garments why don't you take some of them elisha said i don't want any of them don't don't you give me any of them i don't want nothing i didn't do it god did it you take all that back with you so he loads up he starts going back to hazel gets this idea scripture says it he said to himself well i shouldn't take nothing that he brought the end of verse 20 says but as the lord liveth i will run after him and take somewhat of him why did gehazai say somewhat gahey's eye said i don't want everything that he brought i just want a little bit of it when i read that i think what are you doing jessica now i'm going to work in your best interest here okay it makes sense to get all that you can get it makes sense why are you taking some one of this the hazel thought he could get by was somewhat gehasai thought the judgment for somewhat wouldn't be the same as if he took it all but gaha's i didn't realize it was the small fox that spoiled the vine it was a little leaven that leaven at the whole lump it was one dead fly in the apothecary it was just a little bit dehaze high haze i said i'll just take a little bit yeah jesus said i'm not gonna be an alcoholic i'm going to be a social drinker yeah as i said i'm not going to have a second family i'm just going to have a one-night stand hey as i said i'm not going to be a porn addict i'm just going to look every now and then that's what he said but gahesai lost everything he goes back home and elisha says what you've been up to bob and he says nada he said did you go somewhere huh uh he said gahesai don't you know my heart went with you i saw what you did gahey's eye i saw you run the naaman and say can i just have a little bit of what you was gonna give elisha i saw you take that and get hazel because you did that the leprosy that naaman had is going to fall upon your life and it's going to fall upon your seeds life forever dehaze i was foolish for only taking some what but let me ask you how much is worth losing an anointing like gehazai could have had how much is it worth how much should he have really got how much justifies the judgment listen we get caught up in this thing that if i just do it a little bit it's okay if i just do it one time if i just do it on the weekends if i just touch it a little bit if i just look at it a little bit to haze hide how much is worth losing everything i'm working on your behalf to hazel you should have asked for more you should have asked for more but then here's the question you were working under elisha he was the double portion prophet what if you could have been a triple portion prophet what if you could have been the quadruple portion prophet what if you could have been ten times that you were working with a man of god that just had the authority to heal a leper gehazi the things that you could have done the things that you could have been blessed with let me tell you right now it doesn't matter how much gahey's i took none of it was worth it to walk out and lose the ministry none of it was worth it to walk out and lose the anointing none of it if naaman would have given him everything everything would still not have been enough there's several several transactions that just they don't make sense in the word of god another one of these transactions that i think about is a man by the name of samson samson had a calling that nobody else ever had before he had an anointing that we never see on anybody else well if i don't do what somebody else will do that's not always true that's not always true god gave samson something that he has never given anybody else since then that we know of samson had something special samson had something peculiar sampson had something that was crafted just for him it was for absolutely no body else but there was a problem delilah was in the picture his dad and mom looked at him one day and said can't you find a woman from your own country is there not a woman that is there not a holy ghost a woman is there not a woman that believes hero israel the lord our god is one is there not a woman that believes in holiness is there not a woman that believes in righteousness the enemy would love to sell our young people that there are no more holy ghost-filled young people left on this planet but i'm telling you there's a holy ghost filled man and woman waiting for you you keep yourself for somebody that's in the kingdom of god don't you shop outside the kingdom don't you look elsewhere god's got somebody just for you samson he did something that was crazy too scripture says he told her all of his heart you know the bible says that samson loved delilah but it doesn't say that delilah loves samson he told her all of his heart i love it when people say ca i didn't mean to fall in love i can't help that you can help that you can help that you you can choose who you give your heart to you can make that decision if you're going to love that person or not love that person you can make that decision if you're going to spend the rest of your life with them well you're not going to spend the rest of your life with them let me tell you something delilah didn't understand sampson's calling she didn't understand his ministry she didn't comprehend his anointing she had no clue what god had placed on his life she had no idea the anointing that god had put over the life of samson she could not grasp she didn't know how to deal with it she thought it was worth she thought it was like anybody else and everybody else she thought i'll bump into another one of these next year i'm gonna tell you that the world doesn't understand what god has given you the world doesn't comprehend what god has placed in your life and what he's put upon your heart what he's given you to walk in samson you gave everything up for much too little you laid your head in the lap of delilah that's all you got you got a few moments of pleasure but you traded an anointing that no one else had ever seen you traded a calling that no one else had ever received you traded a relationship with god that no one else ever had samson you don't understand what you've given up sam said i'm working on your behalf samson sam said you you should have got not not one woman you should have got two you you shouldn't have just delilah she had delilah her sister and then you should have the irish sister and her cousin and then you should you should have had 70 is what you should have had wait a second we're talking about an authority that god hasn't given anybody else sampson you should have had any woman you wanted in the entire country you should have had all of them when you begin to dissect it no matter how much he got it would have never been enough we read it and we say how foolish is that you gave up so much for so little but it doesn't matter how much he got it would have never been able to compare with what god was doing in samson's life matthew chapter 26 verse 14 then one of the twelve called judas iscariot went into the chief priest and said unto them what will he give me and i will deliver him unto you and they covenanted with him for 30 pieces of silver and from that time he sought to betray him that one right there that really angers me when jesus would walk into the cities the bible says they would bring every sick person to him several places in scripture he'd come into a city every sick person in the city was brought to his feet and several times he healed all of them several places say when he would come to the city everybody in the city would come to him i'm not talking about 10 or 15 people i'm talking about tens of thousands of people can you imagine a man walking into the city limits of maryville and every soul in maryville going to where he was not half of the city matter of fact scripture talks about how he could navigate through the city so he went to the wilderness and entire cities would follow him to the wilderness they would leave their jobs they would leave their homes they would leave their family dinner time whatever they left whatever they were doing at that moment and they followed him to the wilderness just to hear him talk because this was a man that could speak to the wind and the waves this was a man that could speak to the lame this was a man that could speak to the blind the demon possessed the dead he could do anything and judah said what are you going to give me and they said 30 pieces and he said okay judas could have asked for all the gold in the city judas could have asked for the city jupiters could have said you give me the country i want you to give me a big castle on the hill i want you to make me king he could have asked for anything but judas didn't value what he had and he sold jesus for 30 pieces of silver and then he didn't even keep the silver what a crazy story how insane is that we step back and we can mock and we can make fun how foolish judas for you to give up walking with the lord and savior god robed in flesh the image of the invisible god how crazy judas for you to turn that all over for 30 pieces of silver you should have got more judas but how much more justifies losing that anointing how much more justifies losing that calling how much more justifies losing that authority and that power let's do some transactions here today let's find out how much you need to sell your calling because i'm going to work in your interest today tell me what you want and that's what we're going to do let's figure out how much you need of this world to throw your anointing down the drain to throw favor and power and blessing to throw your calling to throw salvation away let's find what you can exchange your soul form tonight but before we come up with that algorithm before we come up with that formula before we find that solution let's lay a few parameters here tonight malachi chapter 4 says it's as a day that burns as an oven revelation 20 talks about eternity in hell being in a lake of fire mark chapter 9 and verse 44 is where the worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched two verses later the worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched two verses later the worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched second thessalonians one everlasting destruction everlasting destruction everlasting destruction it goes on and on and on and on it's forever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever matthew 13 it's wailing and gnashing of teeth so now that we have the parameters of what you're trading for how many acts of fornication is worth that young people it's a lot more than one or two every now and then it's a lot more than three or four every now and then as a matter of fact i can't think of enough acts of sexual pleasure in this world that would be losing your soul for there's not enough this world can give you how many how many how many looks had inappropriate material pornography does it take to justify this right here are you talking about well i've only been three months on it i've only been six months on it i've only been sending unappropriate stuff for a year now that's really not that big of a deal don't you understand gehazi samson and judas they all lost everything for much too little just because you're only getting a little bit of it doesn't mean you ain't gonna lose everything i'm telling you you better get a lot more but when i stop and think about it it doesn't matter how much you get nothing justifies you losing your soul for nothing justifies there's nothing that you can exchange for salvation get in the house of god repent of your sins be baptized in jesus name receive the baptism of the holy ghost nothing nothing there's a man in scripture and this one it cuts me to my heart and i know exactly why because i'm a dad i'm a father now but there's a man in scripture who had his family joshua chapter 1 and verse 3. he's talking about every it says this every place that the soul of your feet foot shall tread upon that have i given unto you as i said unto moses this was a promise unto joshua joshua everywhere you go everywhere you go i'm going to give you exactly what i gave the most i'm going to give more to you joshua i'm going to open doors i'm going to open dominion i'm going to open favor joshua didn't know it but he was fixing to go on the greatest winning streak of all time he was going to take kingdom after kingdom after kingdom throne after throne after throne man can you imagine being a part of that right there man don't you ever just think oh how wonderful would be a part of something how wonderful would it be to be a part of something that just had dominion and favor oh man i wish i could go to church where somewhere could man the preacher could preach and the music was good singing and there's a lot of people because i want my kids to have friends and man i wish they had an event center and a gym and i wish they had a playground and man i wish that my wife said i want to go play on their playground right here that's what she said about you guys playground uh man i wish we i wish i had all that i wish we had all that right there they had it with joshua everywhere he went favor and then by the name of aiken aiken had his wife his sons and his daughters in that house oh thank you ah thank you god for hitting me with joshua thank you god for putting me with a man of god that preaches truth thank you for putting me in a place that has favor and has promise and has anointing and blessings and dominion and vision for the future thank you god no greater joy than they can have to know that his children were right there with joshua as joshua led the charge akin was right behind with his family following him right behind what a beautiful beautiful beautiful picture but one day aiken bumped into something in jericho a garment a few pieces of silver and a few pieces of gold and aiken said i can take that akin why didn't you take the whole city why did you only carry one garment is that all you could have carried why didn't you go and go back and forth why didn't you make multiple trips because you see the outcome of that is that same man that you loved and followed he had a responsibility on his shoulders to the rest of the people he couldn't do what was in best interest for himself he had to look at you aiken say get your wife get your sons get your daughter get everything that you have and i want you to stand right here aiken lost everything for a garment some silver and some gold how foolish aiken you lost everything for a garment for silver and gold it's easy for us to sit here and ridicule now but the truth is some of us are going to lose everything because our prayer life isn't where it needs to be not because we have some great big sin in our life but because we got a few little things we're not willing to work out and those few little things is going to cost us everything i'm telling you what god's preparing to come back to his church if i was ever going to get a prayer life i think you should do it right now if i was going to start fasting i think you should start fasting right now if i was going to get in the word of god now is a good time to get in the word of god if i needed to be baptized i'd get baptized tonight if i needed the holy ghost i'd get it tonight there is nothing worth losing your soul over nothing would you stand with me right now would you raise your hands across this house young people don't you throw away that ministry because you can't let go some worldly music don't you throw away for that anointing because you can't quit watching some junk don't you throw away that calling because of a few friends in your life i'd do whatever it took to get right with god and stay right with god not all the money in the world is with your soul all the money in the world isn't worth your family it's not worth your marriage it's not worth your children's lives it's not worth their souls what god wants to do would you lift your hands would you let the holy ghost flow through this house would you step out of where you are i don't know what custom is but if you want to come to an altar would you come to an altar right now come on dads pray your kids through to the holy ghost tonight come on moms pray your kids through tonight there's nothing worth your soul don't you trade it for anything if you get all the money in the world it's only 30 pieces if you get all the garments in the world it's only 30 pieces if you get all the fame in the world it's only 30 pieces it's not worth your salvation get right get right get right get right come on young people lay some pornography down lay some fornication down quit letting those cuss words slip quit taking this so casual if it's just a little bit it might as well be the world and it's still not worth it judas it was only 30 pieces you lost it all for 30 pieces come on young people cry out come on church family
