Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
A name is a branding: Benoni, or Benjamin
- The visiting missionary opens with fresh perspective: it took a missionary travelling three thousand miles to tell this church, y'all are doing something powerful here — you ought to be proud of this.
- He will not keep them long, but shares what the Lord put on his heart, and reads the text: journeying from Bethel, Rachel travailed in hard labour on the way; the midwife comforted her — fear not, thou shalt have this son also — and as her soul was departing, for she died, she called his name Benoni, but his father called him Benjamin.
- His subject for the Sunday evening: Names and Experiences.
- In Hebrew culture a name is more than syllables: it is a branding, a marking, telling of your origin and your destiny — which is why such emphasis falls on the name of Jesus: a church that still baptizes in the name of Jesus, preaches in the name of Jesus, sings in the name of Jesus, and lays hands on the sick in the name of Jesus; his name called Emmanuel, God with us; and there is no other name for salvation.
Scriptures: Genesis 35:16-18
Do not let people who do not know you name you
- Mary was given the raising of the Messiah — nurse him, feed him, teach him, correct him — but she was not allowed to name him, because she did not yet know who he was: he had not come to fight Rome but to fight the giant of sin.
- People who do not know what God has called you to be, or the lengths God went to find you in the gutter of addiction, disease, depression and fear, will still try to impose a name on you. Live in the shadow of it — my daddy was a loser, my mama was a prostitute, all my friends walked away — or refuse it: I may be the son of a loser, but I am also a son of God, and I identify with where God is taking me, not where I came from.
- The devil works the same naming after the altar: by the time you reach the back doors he is whispering that it was not real, calling Sunday night a cheap thrill and a quick fix. But he did not give you this year — God gave you this year — and the devil does not get to name what he did not give.
- From his own family's naming table: he and his wife pored over books and blogs for a man's name for their first son, Jackson, and landed in unintentional comedy when Sister Wilson thanked them for naming the boy after Brother Wilson, whose middle name is Jackson — a fact they had not known, as his wife honestly told her.
- The point under the laughter is Solomon's: a good name is rather to be chosen than great riches.
Scriptures: Proverbs
Jacob: the supplanter wrestles his own two natures
- Before the text, two brothers surface: Jacob, his mother's darling in the kitchen, and Esau in the field — twins who could not be more different. Jacob's name means supplanter, trickster, con man: he masqueraded as something he was not his whole life.
- His mother's scheme puts the masquerade on him: covered in hair, smelling of the woods, carrying the little bowl of soup to his blind father — you smell like Esau, you feel like Esau, this tastes like Esau, but you sound like Jacob — and when his father asks his name, he lies, and snowballs his life into perpetual hypocrisy and posturing.
- You can steal the blessings of man — build the big business, win the success — but you will never steal the blessings of God, because God knows who you are.
- The midnight rendezvous confronts him: wrestling the angel, he cannot out-slick or out-manoeuvre him, and the fight is as much between his two natures — the fleshly nature that desired the world and the spiritual nature that desired God — until he holds on: I will not let you go until you bless me, and answers the question honestly at last: my name is Jacob.
- The name change cost him: the angel touched the hollow of his thigh, and he limped the rest of his life — what happened inside manifested outside. Unless there is an outward manifestation of salvation in holiness, the preacher questions whether there was ever an inward one.
The collision of the cross, and the king hiding in the stuff
- The cross itself is the picture: a horizontal line — born, graduate, date, marry, kids, work, retirement — collided by a vertical interruption, when God shows up. It is the man you were versus the man God has called you to be; you can resist the cross or yield to it, run from the rock or let the rock fall on you, but you will not walk the same after the collision.
- Jesus became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross — and died willingly: crucifixion killed by suffocation over days, hastened by breaking the legs, but the Psalms had prophesied of him that not one of his bones would be broken; no one had to make him die.
- He refused escape: offered the numbing drink on the cross, he would not drink — he would feel everything. Our world is consumed with escapism — marijuana, alcohol, pornography — but if Jesus did not run from the pain of this life, we have no excuse to run from ours; run to the cross, to the balm of Gilead.
- Israel wanted a king and got Saul, who looked the part — head and shoulders above the rest — but what he was missing was not above the shoulders but between them. When his inauguration came he was hiding amongst the stuff — in the original, the military equipment — and years later, facing the giant, he was still hiding. Sunday night is a good time to get rid of the stuff: the excuses that keep you out of church and uncommitted.
- God's presence cannot be escaped — make your bed in hell, ascend to heaven, it is there — but God's glory is reserved for committed places and committed people. I don't want a big building in Honduras, he says; I don't want wealthy people in my church; I want the glory of God in Honduras, in my family, in my life.
Scriptures: Psalm 34:20
Honest at Pentecost: down in the water Jacob, up Israel
- The day of Pentecost is what it is because it was the first time God's people were honest about who they were: Peter told the multitude that this same Jesus whom they crucified is both Lord and Christ, and they answered, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
- Peter's answer is quoted: Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
- So with Jacob at the river: he went down into the water Jacob and came up Israel — once an alien, now an heir of the promises — because he was honest about who he was, God could change his name. Do not delay baptism in Jesus' name for a parent's approval or a grandparent's visit: the Bible's baptisms were straightway, the fishermen dropped their nets straightway, and bridges back to the old life are for burning.
- From his own church he tells of Brother Edward, sixty-five, half-paralyzed by a stroke, written off by the whole community: they carried him food first, then food and a Bible study, then food, Bible study and prayer, until he saw the revelation of Jesus-name baptism — and since he could not walk, they carried him down two flights of stairs and into the Caribbean, and baptized him in the name of Jesus.
- He still lacked the Holy Ghost and his foot was still swollen, so they carried him up the stairs week after week and prayed, watching the swelling shrink a little more on Tuesday, a little more on Wednesday — until last week Brother Edward climbed the two flights by himself, and last Sunday night he was dancing in the altar. Thank God for immediate healings, he says, but thank God for the incremental ones; if they've got a pulse, they've got a purpose.
Scriptures: Acts 2:38
Call it Benjamin
- Back at the text for the close: Rachel's assessment was not wrong — he was the son of her sorrow — but Jacob had lived his whole life under the wrong name, called charlatan, fake, heel-grabber, and he would not let his baby live under that cloud: No — his name shall be called Benjamin, the son of my right hand, the son of authority and power.
- Look what came of that naming: Jeremiah was a Benjamite, Esther was a Benjamite, the apostle Paul was a Benjamite, the first kings of Israel were Benjamites — all because a father had the presence of mind to rename the sorrow.
- The people of God do not call it like they see it; they call it like it can be. The doctor says cancer — we say healing; they say divorce — we say restoration; they say addiction — we say freedom; they say Benoni — we say Benjamin.
- The appeal rises on that word — say Benjamin over your situation, your life, your family; walk in apostolic authority — and the banked text ends inside the altar call, the sermon complete through its closing exhortation.

sometimes it just requires a fresh perspective to remind you how blessed you are I don't notice my children grow every day because I'm with them every day it takes somebody with a fresh perspective to walk in and say hey they've grown quite a bit those boys look big it required a missionary to travel 3,000 miles to tell you y'all are doing something this is powerful and they you ought to be proud of this amen or the church Genesis chapter 35 verse number 16 I will not keep you long this evening but I do want to share what I feel like the Lord put on my heart Genesis chapter 35 verse 16 the Bible says and they journeyed from Bethel and there was but a little way to come to F wrath and Rachel travailed and she had hard labor and it came to pass when she was in hard labor that the midwife said unto her fear not thou shalt have this son also and it came to pass as her soul was in departing for she died she called his name benoni but his father called him Benjamin Rachel named him benoni but Jacob called him Benjamin and for just a few minutes on a Sunday evening I want to talk to you from this subject names and experiences names and experiences you may God bless you for standing you can be seated amen if you are like my wife and I you've often stared into the sleeping face of your children late at night in my house in fact anywhere we go there's a sound machine it goes with us and you'd walk into their room and you'd hear the not-so-gentle sound of a stream a little obnoxious in my opinion but my wife seems to like it and keeps my boys asleep you'd look down and you'd see my my two boys who are all boy with bumps and bruises wrapped in their favorite pajamas and blanket and their dreams seemingly a million miles away and I've asked myself the question who is this child and when this child is old what is this child going to become what level of contribution is this child going to make in the world we grow from childhood eventually through adolescence and into adulthood some of us do some of us don't the question is there though it it doles with time it's still humming in the background we ask ourselves the question Who am I because we seek identity intrinsically we seek purpose we scramble to the bookstore's to find the latest self-help book hoping that somebody somewhere has found the magic elixir of what it means to know your purpose and what it means to know your destiny seven steps of Highly Effective People Purpose Driven Life power of positive thinking awakening your purpose all of these are indicators that somewhere in the heart of every individual is this pulsating desire to know why are we here what does God have for me what is my calling what am i to accomplish and in our pursuit of a purpose we seek identity and so we give our children a name we must understand this evening that a name is important and in Hebrew culture a name was more than just a few syllables or phonics or a series of words that gave a name but it literally means in the original a branding or a marking a name would tell us about your origin and it would tell us about your destiny maybe that is why Jesus placed such an emphasis on the name that he would establish and purchase and predestinate the church and that is his name Jesus looked across that fire in my mind's eye and he pointed his bony finger at Jesus and he said thou art the Christ the Son of the Living God Jesus looked back at him and said flesh and blood has not revealed this unto you Peter but my father which is in heaven and it is upon this revelation which revelation the revelation of my name that I will build my church that's why if you're looking for a church this evening you need to make sure that you find this church that still will baptize you in the name of Jesus that'll still preach in the name of Jesus that'll still sing in the name of Jesus if there be any sick among you let the elders of the church come and lay hands on you in the name of Jesus a matter of fact the Bible says whatsoever you do whether in word or in deed do it all in the name of Jesus and she shall conceive and bring forth a son and his name shall be called Emmanuel God with us neither is there salvation in any other for there is none other name somebody shout the name Jesus even a casual reading of your Bible and you will see the scripture places an enormous emphasis on the name Jesus but nowadays in 2018 we take very little time to contemplate the significance or the meaning of the name that we give our children will name our children after ancestors or family members or locations but raining outside you might call your daughter rain but few parents take time to contemplate the significance of a name you don't want anybody giving you a name because you don't want to wear the labels and the titles that are imposed on you by people that don't really know who you are they don't know what God's called you to be they don't know where God's brought you from they don't know the lengths that God went to to find you in the gutter of addiction and disease and depression and anxiety in fear and now they want to impose a name on you they don't know who you are Jesus was born from Mary Mary got to participate in probably the single greatest event in human civilization she got to conceive and and bring forth a child that would ultimately become the Messiah and the angel showed up in her life and said Mary you're blessed and highly favored of the Lord I want you to raise this baby I want you to nurse this baby I want you to feed this baby walk this baby teach this baby cradle this baby correct this baby but Mary there is one thing that you are not allowed to do you are not allowed to name this baby because you don't really know this baby you think that Jesus has come to vindicate you of Roman tyranny you think that he's come with a sword and a spear and a chariot and an army but he's not come to fight against Rome he's come to fight against the giant of sin so you raise this baby Mary and you let me name this baby his name shall be Emmanuel God with us I've got to preach to somebody on a Sunday night you cannot allow people who don't know you to name you that's dictated by your pastor your present circumstances well my daddy was a loser so all I'll ever be is a loser the rest of my life well my mama was a prostitute I might as well go ahead and be a prostitute all of my friends walked away from God I might as well walk away from God you can live in the shadow of what everybody else says you ought to be who or you can say I may be the son of a loser but I'm also a son of God and I refuse to identify with where I came from I want to identify with where God is taking me the devil doesn't know you and the devil is a liar you've got to shake off their spirit that caves into depression and anxiety I don't care what happened 24 years ago 24 months ago or 24 hours ago you've got a brand new opportunity on Sunday night to start fresh this evening a brand new future a brand new promise a brand new name see I've been living for God long enough to know what I am Angeles for a number of years and I've pastored I started the church and and I've been a missionary I've been living for God long enough to know what happens when when we walk out those back doors on Sunday night it doesn't really matter what happened in this altar by the time you walk out those back doors the devil is already in your ear and he's saying that wasn't real that was that wasn't real i steamed you down there dancing in the altar but what well you don't know it's everybody everybody in that room doesn't know what I saw the mistakes you made 48 hours ago let's call that a cheap thrill let's call Sunday night a quick fix let's call that a one-night stand but by Monday and Tuesday you're gonna be back in the same problems you were in so what's the use of showing up on Bible study Tuesday night and Wednesday need a revival next week I'm telling you somebody tonight needs to put your foot on the devil's throat and say you didn't give me this church and so you don't get to name this church you didn't give me this experience so you don't get to name this experience you didn't give me this year so you don't get to name this year the devil wants to say this is the worst year of your life but the devil did give you this here God gave you this year this is gonna be the best year of your life this is gonna be the greatest revival of this church you are gonna be healed it is gonna be forever you are gonna somebody needs to execute and walk in apostolic Dominion and authority God gave you a name one of the greatest privileges of parenthood is getting to name your children we pored over books and magazines and blogs to find the perfect name for our children our first child is Jackson Kenneth Johnson and it's a it's a manly name I wanted my boys to when when you read their name on an application you didn't wonder if it was a male or a female I wanted you to know I ain't raising no sissies well you know how it is in church when you name your children everybody starts talking they find out it spreads like wildfire well it traveled all the way the sister was something yeah I'm sitting there at the table and we're just having a good time and she looks across the table at me and we had only decided maybe a week or two and sister Wilson says I Steven you were so wise I said well it's about time somebody figured that out no really I said sister Wilson why do you say that she said well I heard that you named your son Jackson I said yeah we did she said somebody told me you named him after brother Wilson and I was a little puzzled cuz I didn't know what she was talking about but I was just gonna go with him you know it's an opportunity to get in good with sister Wilson I said absolutely that's exactly why I figured I'd straighten hell she said because you know his brother Wilson's middle name is Jackson well I had no idea but hey it worked yeah Jackson for brother Wilson well about that time my wife walks up to the table and sister Wilson says Rachel I heard that she named your son Jackson I was just telling your husband how wise you guys are for naming him after brother Wilson she said what do you mean sister Wilson she said you'll you know brother Wilson's middle name is Jackson and my wife said no we didn't know that and I'm kicking her under the table trying to get her it I said baby you threw me under the bus that was our opportunity to get in good with brother Wilson needless to say I had to do a lot of apologizing and shoe-shining and church cleaning but Solomon said a good name it's rather to be chosen than great riches prior to our text tonight in Genesis 35 we we see two characters who begin to come to the surface on Scripture one is Jacob the other is a man named Esau Jacob is his mother's darling and it was probably Rebekah who named him in my family we would call Jacob a mama's boy y'all know any mama boys yeah let me see your hands if you know any mama's boy if you're not raising your hand and you don't know a mama's boy that's probably because you are the one we're all raising our hands about but but Jacob and Esau are our contradicting directions Jacob is in the kitchen baking new recipes with his mama he saw us out in the field hunting venison and wild game they they could not be more different the only thing that brings them together is that they share the same mother and father he saw as his twin he hunts and Jacob is in the kitchen baking hey Jacob was more timid and weak wristed but he's coming and he's dangerous and it wasn't too long before Jacob's trickery and his his conniving brought him to a dead and struggle to God for an answer Jacob's name means supplanter or trickster or con man or charlatan he was masquerading as something he wasn't his entire life there is this isolation and internal strife that's going on in the life of Jacob and it begins to confront the reality of his life it took one midnight rendezvous Jacob is wrestling with an angel on the backside of a desert and this encounter with an angel he couldn't out slick the angel he couldn't outmaneuver the angel he couldn't masquerade around the angel but he had to front the man that he'd become now I wouldn't make a doctrine out of this but I believe that Jacob I don't know if he was wrestling a physical manifestation of God as much as he was wrestling the nature in him the two nature's the the spiritual nature that desired the things of God and the fleshly nature in Jacob that desired the things of the world and there was this wrestling match going on in the heart of Jacob until finally one conquers Jacob overcomes the nature he looks at that angel he says I will not let you go until you bless me the angel says you don't know who you are you you know you think you know who you are but in fact you are really a prince for you have wrestled with God this this name changing experience did not come without a price and a sacrifice because from that experience jacob the bible says the angel touches the hollow of his thigh and jacob walks the rest of his life with with an obvious limp so everybody knows that what happened on the inside manifested itself on the outside can I preach to this church on a Sunday night that unless there is an outward manifestation of salvation in the form of holiness then I question whether or not there was ever an inward form of salvation because story in works salvation will manifest itself in a way that says I can't go there because that no longer pleases God and I can't wear that because that no longer pleases God and I can't be entertained by that because that does not enter that it's not please God this is the tension between Who I am and who I want to be it's the shake-up and the Israel it is no coincidence that the cross is in the form that it is is the intersection of two opposing directions it is a horizontal piece and a vertical piece colliding to form the cross and that is an indicator of the life we live when we live for God we live on a horizontal plane we are born we we graduate we date we get married we have kids we go to work we get a retirement of 401 K a house a white picket fence a spotted dog an SUV vacation that's the horizontal line we live on and then all of a sudden there is a vertical interruption and that is when God shows up in your life and it's the man you were versus the man God's called you to be the woman you were versus the woman God's called you to be and when you experience a divine contradiction of two opposing directions you will not walk the same you can resist the cross or you can heel to the cross you can run from the cross or you can run to the cross you can fall on the rock or the rock and fall on you but it's the collision of two opposing directions it's your friends versus the friends God wants you to have it's your job versus the job God wants you to have it's your ministry versus the ministry God's called you to and it doesn't always it doesn't always settle well in in the appetite of our spirit but God is confronting people and God is speaking to people and individuals and young marrieds in this church tonight because you're living on a horizontal plane of life and you're just coasting through the existence enjoying the luxury of this building but God is saying it's time for you to step into another dimension of relationship and revelation and God's gonna collide with you and it won't be pretty Jesus the Bible says he became obedient unto death even the death of the cross in Bible days when someone was crucified it would take days for them to die they would not die from the nails they would not die from the lashes they would die from suffocation because they would become so weak that they couldn't lift themselves up off that nail between their feet and their lungs would collapse and they would suffocate and so what would happen is they would walk up to the crucified and they would break their legs so they couldn't lift up off their feet and they would die quicker because the soldiers were not we're not interested in waiting around for someone to die for days but the Book of Psalms is a messianic prophecy of Jesus and it says not one of his bones will be broken that's why the Bible says he became obedient unto death even the death of the cross you don't have to break his bones he died willingly you don't have to make him die he went to the cross of his own volition and somebody in this room on a Sunday night God may have to break your legs or you could just walk to the cross willingly and say God I'm gonna obey your word I'm gonna yield to your word whatever you want me to be I'll be it our world our world is is consumed with escapism we escape we run from reality marijuana is an escape alcoholism is an escape an addiction to pornography is an escape Jesus is on the cross his arms are stressed he is enduring a level of pain but nobody in this room has ever felt they lift the rod with a with a cloth bathed and an alcoholic substance meant to numb the pain he was feeling and Jesus melted and the Bible says he turned and he wanted nothing to drink Jesus said I'm not trying to escape this feeling right now I'm not running from the pain of this moment right now I've got to feel everything hell's god I've got to feel everything the graves God death where is your sting grave where is your victory I'm not running from this and if Jesus didn't run from the pain of this life then you don't have an excuse to run from the pain of this life you need to run to the cross and yield to them to the balm of Gilead to the balm of God's mercy to the balm of God's grace and God will give you the strength to endure stop hiding from the call of God on your life some of you are wondering how old is this young guy how old is this guy trying to tell me what to do I'll tell you exactly how old I am in two weeks I'll turn 30 years old I think more or less mas o menos for the Spanish speakers out there I don't have it all figured out but when I was 18 19 20 years old there were preachers that stood in pulpit and preach to me like this and that's why when I was confronted by the contradiction of a life in ministry versus the life in politics I was living I had the capacity to follow God because they had already planted the seed of obedience in my life some of us look for every opportunity to escape the Bible says Israel one of the King and so God gave them exactly what they wanted he found Saul because Saul look and he walked like a king and he talked like a king he was exactly what you would want if you needed a king in your flesh the Bible says that Saul stood head and shoulders above the rest but the thing that saw was missing wasn't above the shoulders it was between the shoulders they found a man that looked the part but he didn't have it in his heart and that's why when God went looking for a king to replace him the Bible says he found a man after God's own heart soul is supposed to be inaugurated King but they can't find him he's supposed to be in the bulletproof podium make her make his real great again I can't say that California I can't even say that in Honduras we're having a revival of people that are getting sent back well I thought about turning some people in we can have some revival no I'm just playing I would not do that make his real great again where is our King I can't find them but you can hide from man you can hide from your pastor you can hide from the Evangelist you can hide from brother Tony you can even hide from the missionary but there's one person you're forgetting about that you cannot hide behind and you cannot hide from God we used to sing an old song I said I went to the rock to hide my face but the rock cried out no hiding place there's no hiding place in God and God called him out you know where they found so the Bible says he was hiding amongst the stuff stuff that's a King James word stuff stuff is the word I use when somebody called me I used to have an old pickup truck and college they say hey I'm moving tomorrow I don't have a truck can you help me I said man I'd like to but I've got stuff going on it's that all-inclusive word that doesn't really mean anything what you want it to mean that means I'm fishing tomorrow but sorry I can't I got stuff going I got stuff ain't gonna lie to you I got stuff I saw was hiding in the stuff but it really means in the original that stuff is translated he was hiding in the military equipment the sword and the spears and the chariots on the armor and you fast forward saw his life and there's a giant standing in a valley and he's confronting Israel and Saul is still hiding and the stuff Sunday night is a good time to get rid of some stuff there's a missionary here tonight it's a good night to get rid of the stuff that's keeping you from stepping in to your purpose and stepping into your calling and stepping into the next dimension of your relationship with God we might as well go ahead and get rid of the stuff get rid of the excuses get rid of the things that keep you out of church get rid of the things that keep you from committing completely to God it's time to get rid of the stuff and shake-up is confronted with a perplexing offered by his mother yes his mother says why don't you while your brother's away cover yourself in hair bathe yourself in the scent of the woods I'll prepare a little bowl of soup and we'll go steal the blessing from your father it was probably his mother that named him since she's teaching him out of Steel and Jacob does it he covers himself in the scent of the woods he he paste hair on his arm he brings a little bowl of soup to his daddy and he says daddy I brought you some soup so you can bless me Isaac's eyes are gone but his hearing wasn't gone he says you smell like he saw and you feel like he saw and this tastes like Esau spewed but you sound like Jacob what is your name once again Jacob is stepping into a self-fulfilling prophecy and he lies about who he is he said my name is and from that point on he snowballs his life into lies perpetual hypocrisy and posturing and manipulating jockeying for position but Jacob learns like some of us have to learn the hard way that you can steal the blessings of man but you will never be able to steal the blessings of God you can build a big business in Knoxville and you can be successful but I don't mean you have God's favor because you can steal and connive and manipulate and charade and masquerade and steal the blessings of man but you will never steal the blessings of God because God knows who you are God knows exactly the man that you are you say well I'm Esau and God said are you sure that's who you are taking advantage of people acting like you've got it all together but you cannot do these things and have the blessings of God on your life now I'm a young man and it's obvious you don't need my ministry to build a powerful Church in the city but can I just tell you that if we want to continue to perpetuate the glory of God see there's a difference between God's presence and God's glory you cannot escape God's presence you make your bed in hell his presence is there you ascend to heaven his presence is there you cannot escape God's presence but God's glory is reserved for concentrated places of people who have committed themselves to the ways of God and the purpose of God in the mission of God I don't want a big building in Honduras I want the glory of God in Honduras I don't want wealthy people in my church I want the glory of God in my church I don't want the approval of in my church I want the glory of God in my church I want it in my family I want it in my life I want it in my ministry is there anybody tonight that wants the glory of God is there any young man in this room that says you can take this world but give me Jesus you can have the accolades of this world but give me Jesus you can have the sports of this world but give me Jesus you can have the Nobel Peace Prize but give me Jesus I want some matter in the kingdom of God we don't really do the same thing that Jacob does we don't put hair on our arms we don't cover ourselves in the scent of the woods we don't bring bean soup to church but we do cover ourselves in our rags of self-righteousness and we make sure that we smell we've got the smell of Chanel I've got it together can we bring our little offering a little bowl of soup to church and you think you're fooling the preacher you think you're fooling the missionary you think you're fooling the Evangelist you may fool me but God is saying who are you you want to know why the day of Pentecost is what it is because that's the first time in the church's history that we were honest with God Peter looked out over the multitude and he said this self same Jesus whom you crucified is both Lord and Christ they said oK we've been acting like we had it all together we've been acting like we were Esau our whole life and the Bible says finally they said men and brethren what shall we do and Peter said I'm glad you asked repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of these sins the sin of crucifying your Lord and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost it was the first time in the church's history that we were honest about who we were if they see me reveal the best thing you can do on a Sunday night they say god I've got to be honest about Who I am I'm a sinner saved by grace I don't have it all together but if you'll show up on Sunday night help me help me help me I believe that the grace of God can exalt me Jacob he looks at the face of this angel and he says bless me and the angel says ok but first I've got a question for you what is your name he said you've been running from your name your whole life you've been acting like you were somebody else your whole life whatever somebody needed you to be you would be if someone needed you to be a thief you'd be a thief someone needed you to be a liar you'd be a liar but I've got a question for you Jacob what is your and those words echo off the walls of this heart when he hears the sound of his daddy saying what is your name and with his head bowed in humility Jacob says my name is Jacob from that point on he walks different when you get baptized in Jesus name you go down in the water as Jacob is it a coincidence that Jacob wrestled that angel at the River J Buc is it a coincidence that there was a river there where God changed his name he went down into the river of chibok Jacob but it comes up out of the water Israel he once was an alien from the Commonwealth of Israel but now he's an heir to the promises of God because he was honest about who he was God could change his name you don't need to delay getting baptized in Jesus name you need to do it tonight you don't need to wait one more week you don't need to wait till your mama gives you the approval or your granddaddy shows up to church you need to do it the Bible says straightway they were baptized immediately they were baptized there is no room for delay and hesitation in the kingdom of God if you delay you get left behind if you hesitate you missed the promise you've got to respond with urgency Bible says that when Jesus called the two fishermen that they straightway dropped their nets it says that Elijah killed the ox burn the plow when you're building friendships and you're trying to influence people they say don't build don't burn bridges but when you're living for God you need to burn the bridge burn the bridge back to your old life burn the bridge back to old addictions burn the bridge back to old depression go ahead and go home and clean out the pharmaceutical medication that's keeping you in a daze you don't know what day it is you don't know what hour it is you're so intoxicated you don't know how to live your life go ahead and clean it out burn the bridge and step into the Liberty that's offered when you go down in the name when you get baptized in Jesus name names and experiences I've got a man in my church 65 years old big old tall black Islander I can't hardly lay hands on him but the car but you don't have that problem I got that problem sometimes I got some people so big in my church I got to get a chair to lay hands on it I see me I need a charity they need the victory big old man had a stroke half his body's paralyzed the whole community gave up on him so that he's a mistake he's a failure he's never lived for God there's no use and when the whole community gives up on you the church doesn't if I've got a little saint in our church if they've got a pulse they've got a purpose his foot was so swollen I mean it wasn't quite the size of the speaker but almost he couldn't even put it in a crock you know ugly Crocs are when you can't get your foot in the crock your foot is swollen now I got a pair of Crocs so y'all don't get offended we had to literally carry him to Bible study but before we did we would actually carry him food because he couldn't come out of his house he was paralyzed well before we brought him a Bible before we brought him prayer before we brought anything we brought him some food we took him a meal and then we would bring him some food and a Bible study and then we would bring him some food Bible study in some prayer and he would just sit there Rock in his chair finally he saw the revelation of Jesus name baptism he said I want to get baptized but I can't walk I said well we've been carrying you food we've been carrying you Bible study we've been carrying you prayer we're fixing to carry you into the water we carried him down two flights of stairs and we walked him into the Caribbean ocean we walked him down into the water we carried him down into the water and the Bible says that when you go down in the name of Jesus you go down one way but behold you come up a new man and the Caribbean Sea carried those sins far out into the ocean but here's the problem he was baptized but he didn't have the Holy Ghost and his foot was still swollen so we would carry him up two flights of stairs to our church and he'd sit there he'd sit there and he would mumble half his body's paralyzed and he's mumbling rock back and forth and I'd go and I put my hand on his knee and I just pray I'd open one eye just to see if it had gone down and it was still swollen weeks that happened nothing nothing I keep praying until finally one midweek Bobst I looked over and I said brother Edward is your foot going down the swelling going down he said I don't know shook his foot in his crock fell off I said my god we're gonna keep praying next Sunday he came we prayed next Wednesday he came we pray next Sunday he can't we pray little by little that foot the swelling on that foot started to shrink last week you got to climb two flights of stairs to get to our church we used to have to carry him four of our men last week brother Edward walked up those stairs all by himself the doctor said he'd never walk again but if you've got a pulse you've got a purpose and God changed his name and God changed his future and God changed his destiny and God gave him the Holy Ghost and last Sunday night he was dancing in the altar they said he'd never walk again but now he's shouting in the altar hey thank God when you get an immediate healing but thank God for those incremental healings that happen every week a little bit more on Tuesday a little bit more on Wednesday a little bit more on Sunday a little bit more next week before you realize it you're totally delivered in Jesus name because God give you a name and God gave you an experience Jacob as mature now he's seasoned he's a veteran and in our text there is one more child and the loins of Rachel she's in the final stages of pregnancy and the Bible says she's trying to get to F wrath by waggon and Jacob is trying to get to her but the Bible says before she could reach ephra head she goes into gut-wrenching contractions and right there in the middle of the desert she gives birth to a baby but death is lingering like a buzzard she has one more contraction this time it's not for Rachel or for the baby it's for Rachel and like a puff of smoke in the night she's gone and she dies right there in the desert and all that remains is a weeping midwife holding a bloody baby this is the scene Jacob walks up to he limps up to it the love of his life Rachel she's holding the final son his emotions are scrambled like eggs in a pan it looks down to this baby he looks down at his wife he doesn't know what else to say except what is the baby's name he's just walked from an experience with God where his own name was changed and this is the paradigm and that made we may weeping Midwife says before she died she called his name Benoni son of my sorrow and Jacob says now I know what a bad name can mean to a baby because I lived my whole life with the wrong name and I lived my whole life with a dark cloud hovering over my life everyone called me a charlatan everyone called me a fake a heel grabber masquerader I'm not gonna let my own baby live in the cloud of the wrong name and Jacob says No his name shall be called Benjamin the son of my right hand which is translated the son of authority and power I don't know what life has dealt to you in your life I don't know what name you're living with today I don't know what set of circumstances have brought you to this church but can I preach to you on a Sunday night that God is prepared to give you a new name you don't have to be the last on the list you don't have to be a reject you don't have to be an afterthought you don't have to be an addict you don't have to be the son of a failure but God is prepared on a Sunday night to clean your slave and give you a brand-new future and say you will not be called 'banahna the son of my sorrow but you will be called the son of my right hand you will be Benjamin you look through your Bible you've showed me a porno night and you won't find one but you will find some Benjamin's because Jeremiah was a Benjamin Esther was a Benjamite the Apostle Paul was a venture might the kings of Israel we're Benjamites all because of a daddy who had the presence of mind to say you will not be the son of my sorrow I want you to stand with me all over this house Rachel was not wrong in her assessment that was the son of her sorrow but the people of God do not call it like we see it I don't want to be around people like that I've been around people like that my whole life they say well I just mean I just call it like it is I just call it like I see it I'm gonna tell you right now there is no place for that kind of thinking in the people of God we don't call it like we see it we call it like it can't be the doctor says cancer please say healing the therapist says divorce we say restoration they say addiction we say freedom they say per known I we say Benjamin I wish you would lift your hands right where you are right now you may be looking at a porno nation in your life somebody needs to start saying Benjamin over that you need to call Benjamin get a hold of God somebody walk in the spirit it doesn't ask the people oh my god watch the callin Benjamin I'm telling you there is a supernatural river of God's anointing in this room right now and it's not for the half-hearted it's not for that's not for the half interested but I'm telling you right now this altar is open for people who are ready and feel compelled by a Word of God that says I'm looking at a porno nice situation but I'm walking in Benjamin Authority I'm looking at a porno nice situation but I'm walking in for them Benjamin apostolic Davinia come on right now say to God
