Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
Summary
- A night session of a ministers and wives retreat — no place is named for the retreat, and Barnes says himself he does not know where he is tonight — and the first session of the four-part set: Brother Tyrus has spoken before him this same evening, and the next session (row 85's record, "Keeping Your Footing in Times Like These") opens by recapping this session's reading. The congregational carol before he takes the floor, and the closing movement spliced after his spoken close (the same audio that closes row 85's published record, where it is carried), are other material, seamed out of this record (see packet.md). His named texts are Mark 6:31 and Job 42:16; every other scripture wording in the session is retelling or unnamed quotation, excluded and priced in packet.md.
- He thanks Brother Tyrus for speaking first — he was tired, he drove about 350 miles, and he got a new touch while Tyrus was preaching. After the story of the preacher's wife who wanted to leave her husband over tennis shoes, blue jeans and a sports shirt, and the husband who was hitting the terrible old age of 40, he gives his burden: if ever the United Pentecostal Church needed to stay put, solid on the foundation, the doctrine and the standards, it is now — there is a great multitude floating around out there, and one of these days they are going to come in like blackbirds. When a little two-year-old got loose naked in a fine home he was visiting, nobody thought the company should take their clothes off too; don't worry about the little young ones — they will grow up after a while and put some clothes on and let the hair grow out, if we will stay put. Then the doctor who asked him what he does when the pressures get so heavy and the load too heavy — the doctor's own partner had walked out of a good day's practice and gone home and committed suicide. His answer begins the session's body, soul and spirit teaching: you psychiatrists don't believe in demons, but we are covered with the blood, and there is no enchantment against Jacob. Man is made up of spirit, soul and body — the human spirit the seat of God-consciousness, the soul of self-consciousness, the body of world-consciousness — and if you keep looking out at everything going wrong you become world-conscious, then self-conscious and disease-conscious; his secret is to withdraw from the self-conscious, get on back in the spirit, and pull with the Holy Spirit: fifteen minutes there is worth more than anybody's two weeks' vacation. That is our hiding place, minister, in him.
- The disciples worrying about bread, about the storm while he slept, about the tax money — he sent Peter fishing — about feeding five thousand: just bring me what you got. Then he reads his text: Mark, the sixth chapter and the thirty-first verse — come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while, for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. You folks found the desert place, and I thought I would never get here; Brother Kraft is glad he is 200 miles away from home, and I am too — I don't know where I'm at tonight. Pressures, pressures: the preacher who told him "I'm giving him a church, I can't stand the pressure" had it backwards — God called you to turn the pressure on; ain't nobody puts the pressure on like a preacher; put it on the devil and on people trying to split the church. A preacher down in Louisiana called him: a woman said she was sent of the devil and had put a curse on him and his church — she can't put a curse on God's church; I quoted that scripture: there's no enchantment against Jacob. Go to bed and go to sleep and forget about the devils. He was going to preach on "add life to your years" — a lot of folks don't live, they go around half-dead — and tells the joke of Bill, whose face the boys blacked while he was drunk asleep, who ran out in the hall hollering that they had woke up the wrong man: preachers, relax, and put on the smile when your wife wakes you up, or she may decide she woke up the wrong man. He is 71 years old and has never been in the hospital in his life; long ago he decided to get sick to prove God can heal, and the devil came with fourteen old malaria chills and fevers and worked him over — from that day: God's best is not getting healed when you're sick, his best is don't get sick; it is a lot easier to pray when you will to stay well.
- Then he unburdens his heart — the testimony he says he has told only once before, last week. He has seen hundreds of alcoholics delivered and thousands of sick healed, but when he was twelve years old, just come into Pentecost, the family was on its way to church when two drunks came around a curve and turned the car upside down; the baby brother in his mother's arms — Roland — was thrown out and scalded to death, and died in his arms as they prayed. His little sister next to him, Odessa, his pal with the long black curly hair, was stricken with cancer; he never forgets hearing her scream that night; they prayed and battled, and she died one morning. Then his little eleven-year-old sister was struck down with a terrible disease; he prayed and fasted, laid his hand on her head — and when they said she's gone, he went to the woods, got alone, and told God: I don't know why, but I'm going to believe you anyhow; I'm not going to let circumstances cause me to give up. At that old pine tree the Lord came and talked to him; and he speaks to Roland in memory — little Rowland, honey, I couldn't pray the prayer of faith for you, but I have prayed it for hundreds of alcoholics who were delivered on the spot. The devil knows what's ahead of you, preacher — the man that hangs on and believes anyway is where he is today because he wouldn't quit. He has been preaching 47 years and never run from anything: he walked right into their guns, singing, in the name of Jesus, when they had shot the preacher and killed a woman at a place where he was preaching. But two years ago his daughter backslid and left home, and that Sunday morning, for the first time, he didn't want to face the people at church; sitting in his office he saw a face in front of him, eyes black, lips swollen, a crown of thorns on his head — saw him just exactly as he was when he left Pilate, then with the cross on his shoulder — and the word came: Tom, I didn't run; I stayed with it for you; take this message: heal the sick, cast out devils, break the power of Satan. I'll never run, I'll never give place to the devil — I'll fight until I die. Jesus prayed earnestly, and then he prayed more earnestly, with strong crying and tears and a few drops of blood; if a preacher will pray honestly, and more honestly, and hold on, power will come.
- At the old graveyard, over the five bodies — mother and dad, Roland, Dorothy, Odessa — he wept and asked: do they know their son and brother is down here battling hell? Lord, give me a sign — and five birds came flying right toward him, down toward him, and back into the heavens. Yes, they know. There is something about the prayer of faith, the real prayer of faith, Brother Kraft: it never dies; it lives forever; you can add another one, and another one, and another one. Abel yet speaks — a prayer and a sacrifice made six thousand years ago, still there; the saints' prayers are all bottled up, and when they were poured out it was thunder and lightning and an earthquake. Prayers build up: one could put a thousand to flight, two ten thousand. The Lord sent him to the hospital one night to pray for Percy Frazier, dying of a heart attack, no member of his church — and the miracle was Frazier's mother's prayers: she had been in his church, a real saint long gone to heaven, and the Lord poured her prayers out on her boy. Then the corn patch: his dad shelling the seed corn in March, soaking the replanted seed a day or two until it swelled and caught up with the rest. This Bible is the word, and the word is the seed; study gets it in your mind, but a harvest takes getting it deeper — soak it through hours and days of prayer until it is planted in your human spirit; the letter kills, but the spirit gives life, and the words he speaks are spirit and life; then it is not you, it is the word going forth. That is the little secret come from the corn patch — and we can get too busy, minister.
- He watches for whether the Lord knocks on his door: sitting in a barber chair, the Lord told him to pray for a man who the next day told him he would be overseas in a very dangerous place on May the 13th — don't worry; nothing will happen; the Lord told me to pray for you. The old Mose joke — "this is old Mose" asking how old Mose is doing — makes his point: ten thousand people can pat me on the back, but I'm waiting on the Lord's. He has probably gone over his time; he had a text and an outline, but the Lord said just tell them a few things. One night after preaching, so tired he could hardly shut his mouth, the Lord said go pray; he struggled through an hour in the office, then the new anointing came — one o'clock, two o'clock, he didn't touch the clock any more. Don't ever let it slip away: the prayer of faith you prayed will never die; add another one to it, pray more honestly, and watch the answer come. Then he turns over to Job: after this — after the battle, after poverty riches, after sickness health. After this Job lived; he lived a hundred and forty years, and saw his sons and his sons' sons, even four generations. Dad's jar: put in the little bitty rocks, the middle-sized and the great big ones, shake it, and the big ones come to the top — when a church goes to beating, the big ones will come to the top and the little ones go to the bottom; the University of hard knocks is good for us all. The witch flown in from California who could not stand to hear a clock tick in his office; the old Baptist lady who bought a ouija board and could not get free of it — repent; you need the Holy Ghost for protection. The mountain question: if the devil is on your mountain and you don't want him on there, what do you want me to tell him? Kick him off. Paul and the girl whose demons he cast out, though she didn't want them cast out — she's fooling around the church, you can put them going.
- Then marriage: he is so sick and tired of hearing people say they fell out of love. Material things don't hold a marriage together, nor education, nor children, nor even a normal relationship; when God created man he made him a free moral agent — he has to will to love before he loves, and will to let somebody love him. A man can will to love God; he can will to love Satan. You love who you want to love. The fellow leaving his wife because her mouth is like a barn door, she talks day and night — and the same week another leaving his because she won't talk: please, send her by; I got to meet a woman that won't talk. The fellow with the great big sheet of all his wife's faults: turn it over and write all of yours on the back, honest before God — he grinned and put it back in his pocket. We all got a few faults, but Jesus doesn't have any; he's a great physician, he's a darling, he's big. And he closes by taking them back outside and back to his text: see the sunshine and the dogwoods, don't go to sleep, love one another — we are in the will of God tonight: come apart, rest a while, over here in this desert place, rest a while, get away from all this coming and going, and just rest, and have a good time. God bless.

hundreds of alcoholics delivered I've seen thousands of sick people healed whatever disease you can think of cancers all these things no and I never told this but one time that was last week I said well I'm getting old and if I don't tell it boom maybe these younger Bridgers need to hear this why did the Lord appear to me and talk to me one time why did he tell me I
could in his name do some of these things when I was 12 years old we had just come into Pentecost we were on a way to church dad was driving my brothers and sisters and a little baby brother mom had her had he been armed his name was rolling and a couple of drunks come around a curve and turned the car upside down through the baby out on the ready or not to tap off it was scalded to death I grabbed it my arms just scalded my heart was screaming you see we was going to church we prayed but it died
my little sister next to me your name is Odessa she was such a beautiful girl long black curly hair she was my pal she was stricken down with cancer and I never forget hearing her scream that night dying cancer and we prayed my people prayed they all praise His name they battled and but she she died one morning and we can't believe in God we bear Roland we bear no deaths but we can't
believe in God and we kept going to church then my little 11 year old sister was stuck down with a terrible disease I was just a young fella just before I started out preaching then then I had prayed and fasted and prayed and fasted and I I said Lord don't let daughter die and what she died put my hand on her head pray in the door when they said she's gone I went to the woods I got a long jog and I said god I don't know why but I'm gonna believe you in a half I don't understand it but I'm gonna believe you in half I'm not gonna let circumstances cause me to give up I'm gonna fight I never get for that old pine tree when the Lord came and he talked to me and I said little Rowland honey I couldn't pray the prayer of faith for you but I prayed the prayer of faith for hundreds and hundreds of alcoholics they've been delivered on the spot and never wanted another drink I have kept many alcoholics by the help of Jesus off the highways so they couldn't kill somebody else's baby they loaned Esther I've never I couldn't help you honey he was my pal love you then I forget who the Lord begin to heal cancer you see the Lord said this because you believe me you know you wouldn't quit bleeding when it looked like the Sun wouldn't shine and your prayers were not answered you believe anyway let me tell you tonight don't ever give up hang on there's something good ahead the devil knows what's ahead of you preacher he knows what God's planning for your life you know it's a beauty and the wonderful things he'd like to stop if he could but the man that hangs on and please anyway like some of you have that's why you're where you're at today you wouldn't quit you believe now I trusted God please God praise God
I've been preaching 47 years always what pride myself I never run from anything I faced guns and preaching when this close to where I was preaching they had shot it the preacher and killed a woman stood on the platform and they came out to run me out and they shot over my head I don't know how far but I did believe singing by in the name of Jesus I went to him walk right into their guns and he left some of that box you saved today but two years ago my daughter had back
slit left home and that Sunday morning I had gotten news the news that she's gone again and I I said to my wife I said wives I don't want to go to church for the first time I said not to get anything against the Lord I just doing the face of people I just all the face to people they know what's happening I don't have a heart to go she said I don't either I said I'll tell you what I'll just call my assistant tell him go ahead and we'll get in the car and ride just go somewhere she's alright soon as I wash the dishes I went back to my office I sat down in the chair and all of a sudden there was a face in front of me as real as I'm looking at you brother Graham just about three feet from the eyes were black the lips were swollen there was a crown of thorns on his head I never realized that beat him up so bad I saw him just exactly like Gila when he left Pilate saw he didn't say one word he just looked at me a long time and the scene changed and I saw him with a cross on his shoulder struggling the dog Arthur's heel and it faded out just like you'd turn a movie off and it was so quiet he was saying Tom I didn't run I wanna go and get I stayed with it boy for you they beat me there in palace hall and I want you to take this message heal the sick and cast out devils break the power of Satan I can't the cross all the way for you I went back and I said why I said we'll go on the church mother hip and grace of God I'll never never run I'll never give place to the devil never I'll fight I'll fight until I die
praise God hallelujah I'm talking to somebody tonight you're up against some things don't run just pray you said I have but I want you to remember my Lord Jesus Christ he prayed earnestly but I was astonished when I found this scripture not long ago and he prayed more earnestly and he prayed more earnestly he put more into him amen there was a time in his prayer he was praying earnestly but suddenly he moved forwards putting morning to it and the Bible said he offered prayers were strong crying and tears and supplication to tears table II pre mourning in me came a few drops of blood but he prayed more earnestly and more change and on and on I'm a firm believer that if a prize Berta prayed honestly and more honestly and yet hold on power in or out you'll get watch your brain bar sometime the old fresh gets in the way partly for using my own self in this tonight but if I don't tell it I could told you about my brother and two sisters I don't know
what you think when I bared them all and then my mom and my dad all Christians I'll never forget I went down to the old graveyard that was fives body I breathe and I stood there weeping mom was gone dad is gone I thought about the accident about rollin years ago about Dorothy about Odessa my heart was breaking and I said oh god it's things I'm so alone I said do they know that I'm down here do they really know that their son brother it's down here battling hell and fighting and holding up the name doesn't know what if before I knew what I was said Lord it's so give me a sign and the old country I've beautiful birds flying right towards me they came down toward me and then went back into the heavens five grapes five Birds at the moment I asked yes you know yes they
know there's something about the prior of faith a prayer of faith the real prayer faith brother craft never dies it lives forever you can add to that prayer another one and another one and another one and I read were able yet speaks that was a prayer and a sacrifice made six thousand years ago still there I read what the Saints purse what's all bottled up I read were they took the Saints prayers and poured him out and it was thunder and it was lightning and it was an earthquake prayers pills hold it on and on keep praying keep praying add another one in a hidden element it's a thing that makes a preacher's life so powerful and such a flame in the hands of God the fellow has got a thousand hours of praying is more effective and more powerful than the police only got a few hours because it's one prayer after the other one could put a thousand to flight to ten thousand and the prayers build up and they build up and they build up I got a call or one night from
the Lord he said go to the hospital and pray for Percy Frazier first the Frazier was dying with a heart attack I said Lord he's not a member of my church I don't know what they want me in there now he said you go I'll take care of that I went but I really went reluctant well I went in they were so glad they said please come in prayed he'd had a massive heart attack not expected to live through the night but you see going home when I heard about the miracle the Lord said that was his mother's prayers I sent you just as a minister he had the praying his own mother in my church a real Saint that had been gone to heaven a long time and he said I poured her prayers out on her boy hey man please the Lord praise
the Lord what great things a lion store fire I was a farmer back then as a boy how long about March before dad would say boys it's time to shell the seed corn we would find the best heirs and we'd sell it and we put it in a sack and tie the sack up and wait for the day to go and plant the seed and we would plant it and it'd be times that it wouldn't come up right and we'd have to replant it take a hole in and and then some corn and go along and replant it but when it would be dry dad would say what we need to do is to soak this corner and he it's so good a day of - until it would swell and it was amazed at how fast it would catch up with the other corn soon you wouldn't know that it had been replanted what am I saying this Bible is the word is the seed now remember we don't ever had a harvest if we'd kept the seed in the sack and when you study the Bible this is the psyche you get it in your mind but if you're gonna have a harvest you've got to get it deeper than that you've got to soak it through hours and days of prayer until the word is planted in your heart in your human spirit and then it's soaked day in and day out
prayer prayer going up to God unto finally remember the the letter kills but their spirit till nobody gives it life and now the seed has been took out of the side it's been placed in deepens tide and it's been watered and now when you speak it out not from up there but down here the words are speak to the you their spirit and their life the word will never become spirit and life either let's pray it over fast it over stay in stay out plant it deep inside till it becomes a part of you and then you speak it and it's not you it's a word going forth that brings the harvest that's the little secret come from the corn patch it works hey man hey man praise the Lord we can get too busy minister I don't

mine I probably went over my time here but my heart is just burden I haven't stayed with nothing tonight I had a text and I had a outline but the Lord said I want you to just tell him a few things about some things praise God I went from church one night 10 o'clock and the Lord said go pray Austin I'm really tired Lord I preach I just couldn't hardly shut up I was so sleepy and you're saying that that's a bad thing about I couldn't so I went to the office and I prayed and I struggle through an hour but I got to feeling pretty good and all of a sudden laughs a new anointing came brother cool and great everything I wasn't tired anymore I wasn't hungry 1 o'clock 2 o'clock mana life did he pay don't touch of the clock no more the old flesh you know I don't know the old flesh don't want to hit you're doing a pray and the devil is see to it that it don't if you listen well I want to close here tonight look one other character back here in the Old Testament oh but don't ever let that slip away from you your prayer faith you prayed will never die add another one to it and
then pray more honestly and watch the answer come I'm turning over here to job you know all he went through go into that something you're like I've been reading about Jordan that long gone what's that right over here worried got everything back you know and it's up here in this um 16th verse then after the I liked it after this there's always
after this after the battle after poverty riches after sickness health after this I've told the devil all the time I said you just weed after this a man the Lord's not letting you beat me around for nothing I'm coming out of this and I'm gonna beat your ears down and after this job lives I like that he lives around half dead he live brother he really live he lives he was already dead below Leeds felt could accumulate all that wealth and have ten kids and and a backslidden wife without getting old he pumped in heaven few years to live but after all this that's the devil had raged and roared light on him he lived a hundred and forty years how you like that devil you know better let him alone Devils God give him about 130 years more a man well I don't know I've often said oh the demon said well whole job devil he don't mention his name I don't think that they will ever want to hear job again he never want to hear his name because he soundly beaten and whipped him and made a liar out of what he's already a liar but he really made it stand out you know he's a liar but I like this after this Joe lived amen I don't know what you going to but come on I used to hear dad say well the Big Apple's always come to tops almond got me a jar and I put some little bitty box and some middle sized rocks with some great big ones seeing it you don't want sure enough the big rocks came to the top and the middle size one stayed in the middle and the little bitty and the dust so on the bottom all you have to do it just beat it a few times and the bigger this comes a tough little go to the bottom when a church goes to a beaten the big uns will come to the top literally go the bottom please God if you want to get to the top you know just just go hey van because there's something about the beatings and knocking and the University of hard knocks it's good for us all you know and he lived one hundred forty years and saw his sons and his sons Sons even the four generations and I like that so very much
because I enjoy living you know huh and people coming off Orson continually I just a string of people you know coming in all the time here on the telephone everything trying to help you and they come in but every kind of a problem they flew a witch in from way up California remember the First Church of Satan Devils five hours before they come out I had to move all the clocks out of it out um office you couldn't stand to hear tick I said the devil sure has messed you up I like to hear clocks tick somebody came last week said old Baptist lady she said I made the mistake of buying a witty board and she said that thing had talked to me and I talked it said I was just playin with it at first got the answer me without me saying anything mentally I just think something need answer word and then all of a sudden she'd feel a pressure and that devil would tell us that hey you don't love said he really loves you said you need to go over there and she said ah my mind a little queer well yeah I said that's what in my mind she'll come in and just pressure it the world can't please just one little I couldn't get out and she said that they gonna come against me touch my body and just actually burn their real that was a real I said well repent you need the Holy Ghost soon protection because you couldn't you couldn't ball the devil and poor a man a person who had the Holy Ghost he ain't about to get he'll he'll still on the hill in life you know
he knows how far he can go and where he has to stop you but I said lord I want to tell you how I want to ask you a question one day I said Lord and he said well if he's out on the mountain he only said I'm not about but he said if you're on the mountain and you don't want him on there what do you want you to tell me now kick him off hallelujah I said thank you Lord I said I told her didn't know I might overstep he said remember Paul an old girl she didn't want them demons cast out he cast him out in hell she's messing around the church
I get the fooling around the church you can put them going hey about divorce situation I have I was put in a while back I said Lord I'm so sick and tired of hearing people say they've fell out of love in love one another boy husband wife don't love one another more huh just don't know what happened just don't I don't like that said I never stopped loving my wife and I never in my life four to seven years told her I was gonna leave but those I don't believe in line I like she could run milk and all of a sudden feel the spirit of prophecy the Lord is speaking to me he said material things don't hold a marriage together he said folks but Cadillacs in the driveway is getting divorced every day he said education to hold him together to his doctors and lawyers congressmen senators and all the rest of them getting divorce and he said children don't hold him together he said they'll leave the kids limb beholdin squalling and even having a good normal relationship they'll hold him together in that sense because they leave him one other everyday anyway I said oh god what is it he said when I created man I made him a free moral agent he has a lot of power in his will and he has to will to love before you love and he has to will to let somebody love him you see there's some people in love but they don't touch me that's halfway will you companion you've got the will to lover regardless of the storms what comes what those years what you will to love to the in and you will to let her love you and talk to you and the Lord said guard this because a man can will to love God he can will to love Satan so I've been looking at some of them I said you haven't done no such a thing you will to do it it didn't something just go out the back door you will to not love her now brother that's hitting the nail on the head you love who you want to love and I'll see people in love with an old pug nose bulldog uglies about fence and they love that silly thing so it don't go for buting's all that you know and love anything don't want to love just make up your mind what you going to love and who you're going to love them and if it's right to love them wrong and it's always like to love you companion I too had a
