Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

He Must Needs Go Through Samaria

  • Watt reads John 4:4-10: Jesus, wearied with his journey, sat on Jacob’s well and asked a woman of Samaria for a drink, though the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans, and told her he would have given her living water.
  • He says he fell down a rabbit hole of research into the Samaritans, whose origins are traced to the children of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, and to the Assyrian occupation of their land.
  • Generation by generation the Samaritans moved away from the traditional aspects of Judaism, came to feel they could worship God at home, and lost the purity of their faith because they did not protect the truth.
  • By the time Jesus arrived there was enmity between the Samaritans and the Jews; to call a Jew a Samaritan was the ultimate insult, and the word carried a caution to avoid them.

Scriptures: John 4:4-10

The Caution: Landmarks and Warnings

  • In Luke chapter 10 the parable’s Samaritan is remembered as the Good Samaritan — a name that itself shows every other Samaritan was believed to be bad unless proven otherwise.
  • He reads Proverbs 4:14-16 as the caution: enter not into the path of the wicked, avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it and pass away.
  • He thanks God for a great grandmother who set up boundaries for future generations, and for the old teachings of modesty and holiness that presented life as an offering to a holy God.
  • He is thankful for first Thessalonians 5:22, to abstain from the appearance of evil, and for the old traditions, the old cautions, and the old landmarks.
  • But he warns that verses 19, 20, and 21 stand before verse 22 in the same passage, and the caution can become a justification to avoid interacting with people that don’t look like us, smell like us, or act like us.

Scriptures: Luke 10; Proverbs 4:14-16; 1 Thessalonians 5:22; 1 Thessalonians 5:19-21

The Call Outweighs the Caution

  • Luke 19:10 gives the entire mission of Jesus: to seek and to save that which was lost; the lost will not automatically come to us, so the church has to go to them.
  • He returns to John 4:4 — he must needs go through Samaria — and notes the shortest route to Jerusalem ran straight through the heart of Samaria, while other routes doubled the travel time to avoid it.
  • We do the same when we drive further to avoid a bad part of town, or reach to check the locks on our doors; God challenges us to put aside a little of our caution and operate in the call.

Scriptures: Luke 19:10; John 4:4

Compassion Making a Difference

  • He reads Jude verse 20 through verse 23 in the King James: building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, keeping yourselves in the love of God, having compassion and making a difference, and saving others with fear, pulling them out of the fire.
  • He compares it with the living Bible rendering: stay within the boundaries of God’s love, be merciful to those who doubt, and save some by snatching them from the flames, while being careful not to be pulled into their sins.
  • He tells of someone very close to him who left the faith he had known his whole life; some turned their back, but several people met him in his Samaria whenever he darkened the doors of the church.
  • In Luke 17, of the ten lepers Jesus healed, the one who came back to give thanks was a Samaritan, a man who had no business receiving what God’s people were supposed to have.

Scriptures: Jude 20-23; Luke 17

Go: Power to Be Witnesses

  • Mark 16 and Matthew 28:19 both send the disciples out with the same word: go; they are not going to come to us, so we have to go to them.
  • Acts 1:8 promises power after the Holy Ghost has come upon us, to be witnesses in Jerusalem, in Judea, in Samaria, and to the uttermost part; the power is also the power to withstand.
  • He has brother Dakota read from first Corinthians chapter 6 beginning at verse 9, the caution list of those who shall not inherit the kingdom of God, and the answer that follows it: such were some of you, but you are washed, sanctified, and justified.
  • He names the works of the flesh in Galatians as the caution, and warns that we can be cautious and still fulfill the call; caution must not become an excuse.
  • He calls Logan forward as a man who was once found at Jacob’s well, hungry and looking for peace, and says broken people are waiting for somebody to heed the call and come into their Samaria.
  • The altar call invites anyone bound by caution to step out, throw caution to the wind, and take a foot off the brakes and put it on the gas in the call of God on their life.

John chapter 4 verse 4 reads and he must needs go through Samaria this is picking up Jesus is who the he is referring to then he come then cometh he to a city in Samaria of Samaria which is called sakar near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph now Jacob's Well was there Jesus therefore being wearied with his journey sat thus on the well and it was about the sixth hour there cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water and Jesus saith unto her give me to drink for his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat in verse 9. reads then saith the woman of Samaria unto him how is it that thou being a Jew asketh drink of me which am a woman of Samaria for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans verse 10 but Jesus answered and said unto her if thou knewest the gift of God and who it is that saith to thee give me to drink thou would have asked of him and he would have given thee Living Water I wonder if you would just bow your heads with me for just a moment because God is about to speak even further than he already has in this house will you lift your voices and your mind with me right now father in the name of the Lord Jesus God I thank you for your word Lord I Thank you for the words you put in brother Dakota's heart and it allowed him to deliver God I pray in the next few moments God you anoint our ears to hear God our minds to understand Lord in our hearts God to take your word and put it deep inside of us God let that word begin to change us mold us make us God into everything you want us to be in Jesus name amen some of the Samaritans are some of the most polarizing group or figures in the Bible as there has been much debate regarding Origins and their beliefs and the prevailing Theory and I fell down this Rabbit Hole as Pastor was talking about Wednesday I think it was Wednesday or maybe it was last Sunday but fell down this Rabbit Hole of research and I found myself reading research after research after research and before I knew it two hours had passed and I'm I'm deep into this understanding of the Samaritans and there's a lot of differing ideas about this but the prevailing theory is that the origins of the Samaritans is that it was a process by which Generation by generation they move further and further away from the traditional aspects of Judaism they connect their genetic Origins originally to the children of Joseph Manasseh and Ephraim which had already in their own life began to develop strong Egyptian connections because of their birth and where they were raised the the Assyrian then occupation and infiltration of the genetic line of the group of people we now know of as a Samaritans did nothing to slow the fade and this continued to build and to build so much so that they began to feel as though the worship and Temple that for so long had always been centralized they began to feel that it should be in their own home in other words they had no need to go to Jerusalem to worship they said as some might I can worship God at home they begin to build and build toward this and this mindset began to creep in as such they began to develop worship practices which differed to couple along with the diverging genetic lines from the traditional Judaism structure essentially they slowly begin to fade away from the Hebrew traditions and the Torah in which they all have their Origins because they did not protect the truth therefore they became susceptible to the swaying beliefs of pagan cultures losing the purity of their faith and by the time Jesus arrived there was a definitive distinctive feeling of enmity between the Samaritans and the Jews the Samaritans had become the punchline of every Jewish joke to call someone Jewish a Samaritan was the ultimate insult they were the jokes that kids today might tell at the playground where they look at one another and say your mama was a Samaritan it is not flattering to be called a Samaritan and by Jesus even himself in the accusations levied at him prior to his crucifixion was referenced as a Samaritan as if that were to further drive home to the population and the people listening his perceived heresy interestingly in the parable Jesus discusses in Luke chapter 10 this further drives home the feeling of enmity that exists between these two groups of people because Jesus describes someone that has eventually given the moniker as the Good Samaritan which English teacher coming out here tells me there is an understanding that if he's identified specifically as a Good Samaritan then the understanding is is that every Samaritan is back all other Samaritans were believed to be bad unless they were proven otherwise the Samaritans were a people that began with similar opportunities to the Jewish people but because of choices because of their past brother Dakota because of Life circumstances that maybe were completely out of their control or the corruption of the word of God they became separated they became isolated and exiled from the rest of the Jewish population by Assumption of the Jews Samaritans were Sinners of the worst sort they were those that had once encountered God and yet had taken a different path all throughout the Old Testament and most of the new anytime the Samaritans are mentioned there is and cause a caution that is issued that that caution is to avoid them to not enter into their cities to keep separate from them in other words the people that need it the most the caution is don't interact with them don't come to know them because there's this fear that permeates throughout the Jewish people that if you got close to a Samaritan they're bad juju so to speak would jump on you and so there was this caution that was there their cities their homes their lives were marked as ones to avoid because it would corrupt their traditions of the word that had been established and protected by the Jewish people for Generations he was the responsibility of the family and spiritual leaders to protect their families by avoiding all interactions with these people one could easily assume that the writer in Proverbs chapter 4 had the Samaritans in mind when Proverbs chapter 4 and verse 14 says enter not into the path of the wicked and go not in the way of evil men avoid it pass not by it turn from him and pass away for they sleep not except they have done mischief and their sleep is taken away unless they call some to fall see there is a caution that issued that in order to be pleasing to God a boundary line must be made clear they had to clearly Define and differentiate the wicked people from the people of God they had to exercise great caution to protect this truth but can I pause for just a moment before I go a step further and just say I thank God for a great grandmother that many many years ago knew to set up boundaries for future Generations one that had an understanding that it was necessary to avoid the appearance of evil and be set apart as a living offering unto God that that chose to love me I I'm unable enough to express enough gratitude this afternoon to those which came before that heeded the caution of the word to watch out for those that seek to taint the word of God those that live a different lifestyle than what the word of God speaks to I'm thankful for the generations of old the teachings of modesty and Holiness in a way that demonstrated it was not just simply rules to follow but it was a way to present my life as an offering to a truly holy and loving God I am grateful this afternoon for the landmarks which kept me from the past down which I may have fallen into a sinful nature I'm thankful for first Thessalonians 5 22 which tells us to abstain from the appearance of evil I'm thankful for the old traditions I'm thankful for the old cautions I'm thankful for the old landmarks but can I tell you this afternoon that the lone landmarks and the old cautions have become a problem for us today not because they don't need to be upheld but we use them as justification to avoid interacting with people that don't look alike us that don't smell like us that don't act like us as grateful as I hear for the cautions that have been taught and ingrained from past Generations we must be wary of allowing the caution to interfere with the mission to allow the caution to interfere with the call that God has placed on his church see oh we love that scripture abstain from the appearance of evil but we often forget what it says in verses 19 20 21 before we ever get to that it starts off by rejoice it starts off by prey it tells us to do all these other things and if we do that we will do these things so often we can allow that caution to become a force that eliminates opportunities to serve the Kingdom's call it's a very real possibility that in attempts to avoid the appearance of evil we go around the blessings of God that need to be brought to a hurting community Jesus's time on Earth the word tells us he was the word made flesh he was the Incarnate Word he set examples for future generations to follow he broke the Traditions that had long been held because it was time for a new working a new dispensation of his glory he came as Luke chapter 19 and verse 10 says he came from the beginning of the world he came slain from the foundations of the world in Luke 19 10 says the entire mission of Jesus was to come to seek and to save that which was lost there was no understanding that they were going to automatically come to us like some Field of Dreams experience if they build it they will come no the word tells us that it is the challenge of the church it is the call of God that we are to go into them we are to go to their regions for centuries there had been a drifting away of the people of Samaria and Jesus came Jesus came with a call to overcome in John 4 4 the word tells us he must needs go through Samaria this small scripture this Short scripture hit me in the face hard two weeks ago I had no idea Pastor was going to ask me to preach but God orchestrates things that way and I began to study this and research why was that so important and I had to do the research to understand why the Jews hated Sumerians so much and it's all because they had different problems than the professional Jews their issues went beyond the professional church-goers historically there were three routes that individuals could follow to travel from Galilee where Jesus was before John 4. to Jerusalem one was a scenic route where you could go and enjoy a beach day basically by the coast another one was straight through the heart of Samaria and then another one did everything they could to stay just outside the boundaries of Samaria what's important for us to understand is that the shortest route to Jerusalem the shortest route to the place where they were supposed to worship the shortest route went right through the heart of a land that they viewed as God forsaken that didn't have people that they needed to care about they would instead rather add double the amount of time to go around Samaria than they would to get anywhere close to those filthy disgusting smelly alcoholics drunks drug addicts people with mental health issues they didn't want to go anywhere near them they would add more time to avoid interaction so many of us we think about our own trips our own travels how often do we drive further around to avoid going to a bad part of town well we'll we will add five miles sometimes to avoid going through a community that we know drugs are a problem we will add time to our trips to avoid those things and oh if we happen to make a wrong turn and we see somebody we don't quite like on the sidewalk we are almost instantaneously reaching and triple checking the locks on our doors all the while God is challenging us through his word and through his example to begin to put aside a little bit of our caution and to exercise the call operate in the call maybe instead of avoiding those bad parts of town maybe we should make a point to drive through them oh some of y'all just went uh but the reality is where are the hurting people where are the broken people Jesus himself exemplified that the responsibility of the call should be greater than our caution I understand and this is not an indictment or a disagreement but I understand that some of us take opportunities to make sure we're protecting our kids and as Fathers as parents that's our responsibility but do we ever err on the side of too much caution so that we don't understand and they don't understand that the mission of followers of Christ is to reach those that are hurting and broken and forgotten yes it's safe on the other paths that do not necessarily necessitate interaction in environments that make us uncomfortable however the call of God for every believer the call of God that each and every one of us have the call of God that is on every life in this room requires a movement into a place of discomfort it is not going to be easy it is not going to be something you just wake up one morning and say you know what I'm gonna no it's going to be uncomfortable it's going to be painful it's going to hurt but oh I wish there was a church that would throw caution to the wind a little bit that would stop hitting the brakes as pastors been teaching us and start hitting the gas on the call of God it is the must-needs of followers of Christ that we begin to exercise and operate in the call they're going to make my car stink their spirit's gonna jump on me from somewhere in the place of your pain your discomfort your Brokenness do you hear it this afternoon it's the sound of promise crying out for you to go into Samaria and meet somebody at Jacob's Well Logan come here buddy brother Dakota you were on point today because last night I was praying again I had to stand up here so you don't look so much taller than me I was praying again and God just began to smack me in the face because how many times do we come across and interact with men like Logan many of y'all know Logan's story it's not my place to share but I will tell you that there were a time that he felt like he had fallen away that he was found somewhere at Jacob's well and he was hungry and yearning and looking for peace that could not come he was looking for Joy he was looking for hope he was looking for a way out this is not somebody that didn't know truth but this is somebody that looked for an opportunity to allow God to do something beyond what they had done before are there mistakes that happen yes are there broken people yes there are broken people that are waiting on somebody to heed the call to come into Samaria to stop making excuses why you can't do it there's a Logan that's waiting for somebody there is his Chesney that is waiting for somebody there's an Ethan that's waiting for somebody come on so many times we're faced with these situations well we are so Bound by caution that Logan sit there for months and months and months dying alone broken people there's hungry people that can't make it out of Samaria because of their own decisions or their own choices and they can't get past their past but it is our job our responsibility as the people of God to put aside caution and start reaching for those that everything about us says we should hate a dislike Jude verse 20. I'm going to read it first in the King James but I did a little additional digging and I want to compare it to another translation but in the King James it reads verse 20 but ye beloved building up yourselves on your Most Holy Faith praying in the Holy Ghost keep yourselves in the love of God looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life and some have compassion making a difference and others save with fear pulling them out of the fire hating even the Garment spotted by the flesh the living Bible reads it like this if we can keep the King James up there I want to make sure everybody knows I'm not way off base here but it reads in verse 21 it says stay always within the boundaries of God's love or where God's love can reach and bless you wait patiently for the eternal life that our Lord Jesus Christ in his Mercy is going to give you try to help those who argue against you be merciful to those who doubt y'all hear me when you see trials around you on your job in your home within extended relatives understand you're to be merciful to them you're going to try to help those that argue against you verse 23 save some by snatching them as from the very flames of Hell itself and as for others help them to find the Lord by being kind to them but be careful that you yourself aren't pulled along into their sins we can be cautious and still fulfill the call we can't be cautious and use it as an excuse not to do what God has orchestrated and designed for us to do hate every trace of their sin while being merciful to them as sinners we must be cautious yes but the call requires us to reach to those it may seem Beyond saving some of us have been that individual where we've made bad choices we've been broken and yet people the people of God following the call still reached out and made kind efforts of Mercy someone very close to me made a decision several years ago because of some situations within their marriage to leave a faith they had known their whole life very easily some in the church turn their back become because some were like I can't be around you because of the filth of the sin that you've decided to go into but there were several people that any time he would darken the doors of the church and he would make his way toward the front or even just sit with someone he knew already someone several someone's were there to meet him in his Samaria they were there as the voice and the mouthpiece of God at Jacobs well can I tell you this afternoon I'm hurrying in the story of the ten lepers that Jesus healed in Luke 17. we look so often to these people that are in this kind of situation as as a lost cause foreign but in Luke 17 we read about 10 lepers that came to Jesus and cried out for healing I had never known this because a Bible quiz read the word for years and years this never jumped out at me until today nine of them went on their way after seeing that they had been healed one came back one came back to make sure that they presented to Jesus how grateful they were the Bible says that one individual was a Samaritan who had no business receiving what God's people were supposed to have this Mongrel this inbreed this teacher of false Doctrine and yet he was the one who understood he had no desire or no reason or justification but still Jesus touched him see Jesus heard the call of the woman at the well I believe that's why the scripture says something triggered in his heart and he said I must needs go to Samaria because there's a woman there that nobody else around her sees any value she brings but I for one know the Revival I have to bring to Samaria is going to come through what happens with her everything about Jesus's disciples you got to imagine especially old Peter that love to run his mouth Jesus why the world are we going through Samaria like you know these people you know who they are you know what they do and yet still he chose to come interestingly enough and I'm if you can stand with me brother Duran if you could come can I tell you if you are someone today that is looking for Value in your life God has not given up on you but I've been so burdened by this message because we've adopted a professional Christianity mindset where we feel like everything has to be presented this way otherwise we can't go near it but when Jesus himself threw caution to the wind and began to teach and reach in Samaria he said an example that said Hey look ground yourself in the truth of the word and go Mark 16 he says to his disciples go Matthew 28 19. he tells his disciples go every time he says go they're not going to come you've got to go Acts chapter 1 verse 8. and ye shall receive power that power is the power to withstand what you feel may be filthiness of the flesh you shall receive power after the Holy Ghost has come upon you guys if you can't fight the devil on your own understand the day if you've never received the baptism of the Holy Ghost In accordance with the book of Acts please please talk to us allow the spirit of God to flow over you because it's unlike anything you've ever seen if the forces of the enemy are constantly waiting war in your mind hear it right now the power to overcome is found in the power of the Holy Ghost but the word says you shall receive power after the Holy Ghost is come upon you and you shall be Witnesses in Jerusalem in Judea Indian that filthy disgusting traitorous false Doctrine loving community as Samaria the Revival we talk about guys is not going to come from Jerusalem it's not going to come in Judea it's going to come when the people of God throw aside all caution and look for that prize the calling of God to go into Samaria and the uttermost part of the brother Dakota read this or at least a portion of this First Corinthians chapter 6. verse 9. see the caution is this know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God be not deceived neither fornicators nor idolaters nor adulterers or feminate abusers of themselves with mankind thieves Covetous junkers revelers extortioners none of them shall inherit the kingdom of God see that's our caution our caution there is these are all works of the flesh now the works of the flesh are manifest which are these see rights in Galatians that's the caution but the call is to come to remembrance for the Dakota that such or some of you come on raise your hand in this room if you've ever found yourself broken if you've ever found yourself in a situation that you didn't see well come on look around the room right now somebody heated the call and put aside caution to bring hope to a troubled soul because such were some of you but ye are lost you are sanctified you are Justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the spirit of God sometimes we forget where we came from some of us have been serving God 50 60 years maybe today we need to remember what it was like when the time came that Jesus came to us and took us out of this moment and brought us to a place where his presence began to fill our life when we begin to feel a power unlike any power we've ever had in our life maybe today that's us and maybe today I'm the one that's been putting caution in front of the call oh but man what what if they what if they throw something at me that gets on me and makes me dirty oh here the challenge of the word today brother Dakota did a great job leading into this because our calling is to reach our calling is to dig our calling is to look for those that are hungry and hurting in the most unusual circumstances that is the call come on will you lift your hands right now if you are one of those two people I mentioned maybe maybe you need a reminder today to throw caution to the wind to hit your yeah to get your foot off the gas off the break and hit the gas in the call of God on your life if that's you I invite you step out of your seat today if you want to know God and know the power of His word I invite you slide out of your seat find a place around this front there's plenty of carpet why don't we just take a moment and say oh God help me Lord Jesus to throw caution to the wind for the sake of the call come on reach out to him right now call out to him right right God forgive me for the times I've let caution inhibit the working of your calls where I've allowed my own Brokenness and on fear stop what you want to do in the lives of those around me Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Jesus Hallelujah Hallelujah Lord Jesus come on somebody lift your voice to the Lord right now come on the word for the hour come on thank the Lord that he still speaks in the church yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah Jesus Jesus Jesus Hallelujah to Your Name Lord God I love you Lord I love you Lord I love you Lord I love you Jesus I need you Jesus come on somebody search yourself right now Lord if I Justified my actions Lord help me Jesus help me Lord Jesus I need you Lord I need you Jesus I trust in you sweet savior I love you Jesus I Need You Jesus hallelujah hallelujah Hallelujah come on somebody let the Lord move in your life right now Lord thank you for sending somebody my way thank you Lord for an open door to come to know you help me Jesus
