Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

The foundation when you don't know the next step

  • Last week's foundation of God's will is recapped: do good, love mercy, and walk humbly with God.
  • When no next step has been revealed, the worst thing to do is stay still; keep working the foundational pieces and God will open avenues and doors.

Trust: the compass in a stormy world

  • Ernest Shackleton's 1914 expedition to cross Antarctica: the Endurance trapped and crushed by ice, an 800 mile lifeboat journey to South Georgia Island, and every man rescued — a picture of courage and persistence in uncertain waters.
  • Since the first sin in Eden, mankind has made decisions about an uncertain future; the only safeguard is an objective source of truth and a direction to follow.
  • First John tells us we shall see him and be like him; everything between rests on one simple word — trust.

Scriptures: 1 John (book-only, as spoken)

Romans 12: prove the one will of God

  • Romans 12:1: present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable — our reasonable service, the bare minimum expectation.
  • Romans 12:2: be not conformed to this world but transformed by the renewing of the mind, to prove the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
  • There is one will of God with levels within it — not a permissive will and a perfect will; and trust must rise above our feelings, our wisdom, and our understanding.

Scriptures: Romans 12:1; Romans 12:2

Take a step: God speaks to people who move

  • Peter saw the miraculous only after he stepped out of the boat at Jesus' word; God does not give the next step to someone standing perfectly still.
  • A misstep is not the end: come back to the place where God last met you, recalibrate, and step again — safety is a place to recalibrate, not a place to dwell.

Psalm 143: taught to do his will

  • The psalmist, crushed to the ground by the enemy, remembers the days of old and meditates on all God has done; experience over time is what builds trust.
  • His cry — teach me to do your will, for you are my God; let your good spirit lead me on level ground — shows the will of God must be taught; it does not come naturally.

Scriptures: Psalm 143:1-10

Like children, we learn one step at a time

  • The month's key verse: Jesus receives the children — suffer the little children to come unto me, for of such is the kingdom of heaven.
  • Children must be taught what they would never learn on their own; babies start with one step, then two — nobody runs a marathon first.
  • Setbacks become setups when we keep asking God to teach us; feelings lie, because feelings are completely subjective.

Scriptures: Matthew 19:13-15

Elijah, the still small voice, and surrender

  • After Carmel, Elijah fled into a cave; God fed him, then asked, 'What are you doing here?' — wind, earthquake, and fire were his past experiences, but God was in none of them.
  • More prophecy for Elijah's future lay in the still small voice — Elisha who would take up his mantle, and more to come — than in every past fire; trust built on the past must turn toward what's next.
  • His all-time favorite scripture: trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding, and he shall direct thy paths; the Scottish woman kept tossing her stick because it pointed left when she wanted to go right.
  • General William Booth's secret — 'God has had all there was of me': the greatness of a man's power is in the measure of his surrender, and the closing appeal applies it — the stuck place breaks when lip service becomes complete surrender.

Scriptures: 1 Kings 19; 1 Kings 19:9; Proverbs 3:5-6

thank you guys you could be seated I thank you all for being here on a Wednesday night and especially all the teachers I thank you for being here tonight because I know those in Georgia y'all started back within like the last few days and and and those of us in Tennessee that have already been enduring and fighting the good fight for a week like you know like we don't feel your pain but I appreciate you all being here on a Wednesday night um and and last week last week we we began by discussing the fundamental element the foundational piece of God's plan for us that if we don't get that right it doesn't matter what else we do right beyond our own salvation if we do not get that foundational piece of God's plan and God's will for us in our lives in action nothing else is going to be relevant to pursuing the call and the direction and purpose of God in our life and that basic premise and foundational element of God's will for us that we discussed last week was number one doing good then loving mercy and ultimately walking humbly with him so it is always imperative that when we do not know what our next step might be in God's Will and God's plan and God's purpose for our life that we continue in that foundational pieces of his will for us so if we find ourselves like kind of stuck the most important thing or the worst thing you can possibly do is stay still the best thing you can possibly do is continue working in those foundational elements of God's will for us to do good to others not just for ourselves to love Mercy even when people look like they don't deserve it and to continue walking with humility in God so when we don't know what to do that's what we do when no other part of the will of God and the plan for God is is revealed to us if we continue walking in those things eventually something will open and God will open up Avenues and doors I want to start tonight with this new Lesson by telling telling you a story about a guy by the name of Ernest Shackleton anybody ever heard of Ernest Shackleton that doesn't surprise me brother rob you probably got it in one of the books somewhere but Ernest Shackleton was an Englishman in 1914 so I will say brother Rob having spent time over in Scotland on the mission field with his folks kind of has an unfair advantage to the rest of us the rest of us had to dig it out they probably talked about him when they were you know sitting there across uh fish and chips or whatever or else they did so um but Ernest Shackleton in 1914 took a team of explorers and set out from England to do something that no one to that point had yet accomplished his desire his goal was to start on one side of the South Pole in Antarctica and cross all the way to the other side of the South Pole again in Antarctica for those that don't know their geography that is way down at the bottom of the globe so if you got a spinning globe it's the part that has the two pieces holding the globe there okay that's where it is and it is one of the coldest places if not the absolute coldest place on Earth hey it is not a fun trait or fun thing and so on their Journey disaster struck as you know anytime we learn about these types of stories we know something bad probably happened because we don't learn about these stories and these cool people in history if everything went has planned tell me one person in history that yes absolutely everything went perfect I planned it great that we read about them in history anybody ever read anybody I I haven't so so anyway disaster struck and the team ship the endurance became trapped in the ice and eventually sank as the ice crushed the hole of that ship maroon they were on nearby Elephant Island there seemed to be little hope for their survival again in Antarctica this is not really the place that you can overpack for and so in a desperate effort to get help Shackleton and five others set out in a 20 foot Lifeboat across some of the most dangerous and stormfield Waters in the world it was an 800 mile journey in a 20 foot Lifeboat they were trying to get to an island called South Georgia Island at Black Shear is not there sister Mandy I'm okay where they knew they could find help but it was 800 miles away for 15 days the men battled the the treacherousness of the Seas and massive storms with waves that they documented reach close to 100 feet tall using only a compass and a seant Frank Worley who had been the captain of their ship the endurance navigated their course until they safely reached land and found help Shackleton then procured another ship and returned to rescue all of his men and because of this he became a national hero in England as an example of courage and persistence in the face of odds and let me just kind of go ahead and interject this just like they were we live and we are currently making our way through a very stormy world ever since the first sin in the Garden of Eden mankind has struggled to make wise decisions about a future that we are very uncertain about no one in here knows what's going to happen in the next five minutes well I kind of do but nobody else in here knows what's going to happen in the next five minutes 10 minutes 10 hours 10 days 10 weeks 10 months 10 years 10 centuries no no one in here knows for certain what that's going to be and and we are trying our best to make wise decisions about uncertain Futures that we cannot see and and the only way to ensure that we do not go astray is to have an objective source of Truth and a direction that will guide us even if we don't know exactly where that direction is going to make us end up everybody follow follow me now this is not to throw a wrench in anybody's Theology and the understanding that we know when when when God comes back John tells us or first John tells us we we shall see him we shall be like him that's not to diminish any part of that but it is to make us understand we are doing it based on one simple word trust that's it trust and just as a compass can guide Sailors through dark and uncharted waters God's plan and God's purpose is present and can guide us through uncertain and difficult circumstances but it comes back to this we simply must trust his plan and his purpose so this month we're talking about God's will for us and God's will is tied up ultimately Beyond those foundational pieces we talked about last week God's will is tied up in his plan and his purpose for each and every one of us his will is wrapped up with a nice tidy bow right in that idea of plan and purpose every one of them we simply have to trust God's plan and purpose over our own feelings and you know it's so easy for us to say yeah I trust God but actions should always follow what we say we trust if I say I trust brother Dan with everything that I have within me and I refuse to jump off this stage and expect brother Dan to at least catch me now I know that's 300 pounds nobody wants that and I'm not going to do it so don't freak out but I believe I trust brother Dan enough that if I said come here and get ready to catch me he would do everything in his power to do do that but if I don't put action to the trust I'm not going to do that like I said I don't want to I don't want to cause a man to have back problems but we've got to trust it we've got to trust it over our own feelings we've got to trust him and his plan over our own wisdom guys there's some educated people I've come across in my life there's some very wise people I've come across in my life but their wisdom does not Trump my need and necessity to trust God's plan and purpose for my life right it can't if I want his will to operate and have like Liberty in my life I have to trust it above my own feelings above my own wisdom and even above my own understanding you know how hard it is to trust someone when you don't really understand like I I'm a logical thinker I'm like I am I tell my I tell my colleagues at work all the time it's like I'm a pretty good soldier like I I will do what I'm asked just make it make sense to me don't don't ask me to write lesson plans for a month when there's no logical explanation as to why I have to plan a month out when we might have weather days and we might have this meeting and we might anyway I'm sorry I'm I'm getting on a teacher Soap Box y'all AP y'all forgive me I I got to go beyond my own understanding if that's going to operate the other thing is is we also must know the direction even if we cannot say with 100% certainty what the end result will be I've got to trust and know the direction God has for my life so how do we find that direction trust is something that's developed over time it's it's built upon our experiences in which we have seen those things that we trust come to pass we don't trust if we haven't seen so how does that work when understanding and trusting God's plan and purpose for our life because that goes beyond our normal understanding it goes beyond our own wisdom it goes beyond our own thoughts it goes beyond our own feelings how do we trust God's plan when we don't see it how do we trust his will when it's not something tangible we can see anybody ever ask yourself that question or some form of that question how can I trust this when I'm not entirely sure what's there but is I do find it somewhat interesting that Romans chap 12 I've I've always it's one of the first passages of scripture I remember memorizing back in Bible quizzing Romans 12:1 says I beseech you therefore Brethren by the mercies of God that we present our our bodies a Living Sacrifice wholly acceptable unto God which is our reasonable service now I don't have time to dive into that like what reasonable means like I don't have time for that tonight uh but yeah if you don't understand the word reasonable service that means it's not Beyond expectations that is bare minimum expectations anyway I'm sorry can't go there no time verse two though says this be not conformed to this world in other words don't be like everyone else in this world that has to see things has to touch things has to taste things have to smell things have to hear things in order to be not conform to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may prove which means it exists and I'm going to prove it with a transformation that occurs in my own mind that it what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of guys I heard it taught when I was a kid that there's multiple Wills of God and they use this scripture I'm telling you as an English person that is building upon the same thing the will of God is one thing it has levels within it but there is one will of God there's not a permissive will there's not a per there is one will of God in our lives and for our Liv that's what those that's what those commas there mean good acceptable and perfect will of God they all modify and describe the will of God it's all the same it's all the same anyway we must prove his will for our lives which means we have to trust him and so often we find ourselves in these moments where we we find ourselves in these moments where we just find ourselves stuck anybody ever found yourself stuck like and and we don't know where to move and and hopefully after last week and how we intro this week you guys kind of have an understanding that when we don't know what else to do we do good we love mercy and we walk humbly with our God in other words I have to begin to take a step I may not know where the end is but but I know a direction and if I don't ever take a step I'll never know a direction and it's challenging and as uncomfortable and scary as it is to take a step I must first be willing to say okay I don't know exactly where this step is going to take me but I'm going to go right here and I'm going to say you know what I took a step I am moving in a direction that God has outline for my life and I'm telling you the more steps I take in the direction I know God has has me leading the more clear his will becomes cuz then I can go and I can take another step and then I realize you know what God will tell me if I'm taking a step that doesn't match and then I take a step back and I'm back where I am but I know that you know what if I stay here though what's going to happen to me if I stay in this spot and I don't move am I ever going to see everything that God has planned for me am I going to see his will fulfilled in my life am I going to be trained transformed by this renewing in my mind and prove this will of God for my life if I don't move yes I had a set back yes I had a problem but you know what I'm going to take another step it's okay I can come back because God is with me he's guiding me he's directing me I'm taking a step you notice God is not talking to me when I'm standing in one spot he's not telling me what the next step is while I'm standing still perfectly still and not doing anything I'm building in my mind this concept of I'm going to do good I'm going to love mercy and I'm going to walk humbly I'm going to keep walking and you know what yes there's going to be some mishaps yes there's going to be some missteps yes there's going to be some things that happen but if I don't ever take a step God never reveals it think about Peter in the boat Peter in the boat he didn't see what God wanted to do in that moment for him until he took a step he could have stayed in the boat and seen Jesus walking on the water he could have when Jesus got to him things could have happened but he said you know what bid me come and Jesus said come and when he said come he took a step and all of a sudden something new and miraculous was open to him and then he began to take another step and it may have there was God again in the midst of the storm say hey look Peter keep your eyes on me don't turn your back don't go away take another step you know Hey look it's okay we've all made these mistakes right ever hear the voice of God it only happens it only happens when we take a step and then I take another step and then I say Okay God I'm seeing things open for me that I've never seen before I'm seeing your plan operating in my life and then when I turn back and I look I didn't see God's plan in that moment but now I can look back and I can say you know what there's the path God has had me on there's the direction he has me on where do I go now most important thing I've got to keep moving okay God's here I'm gonna move back because I know God was with me here and I'm GNA take another step I'm GNA take another step and I'm GNA take another step hey I don't have the direction I don't have the Direction all I have a direction excuse me I don't have the master plan I don't have every step lined out for me because I'm not the maker I'm not the Creator but what am I having to do I'm having to trust God to make sure I don't fall by the wayside and I know God met me here so if I take a misstep it's okay I can come back into the presence of God and I say you know what the worst thing I can do is come back from a misstep and never move again I could be perfectly content right here but what about God's plan for my life what about God's purpose for my life safety is not the place we're meant to dwell if we're pursuing the will and plan God has for our lives safety is a great place to be but it's not a place to dwell and so now I'm looking here and I'm like okay is this it God is this the direction that's not it okay I'm going to try again is this it God this is it isn't it oh my word what's going to happen I don't know which way to go so hey it may seem like a lateral move but then I'm going to take some more steps and I'm going to say you know what this is it God this is where I'm living this is what I'm working for oh my word Jesus thank you for giving me had I stayed back here I never would have made it across now here's the important factor of this I did not have the entire plan laid out for me I had a Direction but I had to depend on and trust God that when I took a step he wouldn't let me fall before I hit something tragic God was in my ear his voice speaking to me declaring his will and his plan for my life he had the plan not me he knew every step I needed to take along the way see his will for us is beyond what we see we only see one level at a time but God is over here at the end and he's cheering us on he's saying it's okay it's okay take that step take that step take that step it's okay where you went just be careful where you at and you know you can go back in the arms of safety and kind of recalibrate and move again because God's Will and God's plan and purpose for our life is not to stay where we were but to constantly progress toward his Direction and his purpose for our lives so how do we find that well in reality sometimes it's trial and error so many times if I were to ask you all in this room tonight to tell stories of people that tried to take a step of faith and something didn't quite work out right what happened to some of those would be tragic stories because instead of going back and refocusing on the direction they kept going when God was in their ear saying watch out be careful it's coming it's not the right dire and instead of following and realizing God's plan for our life based upon an action that allowed God to move and speak they would fall by the wayside and end up somewhere that was completely not just unsafe but Soul crushing in the process Psalms chapter 143 says this hear my prayer oh Lord Lord give ear to my please for mercy and your faithfulness answer me in your righteousness ENT not verse two into judgment with your servant for no one living is righteous before you for the enemy has pursued my soul and he has crushed my life to the ground he has made me to sit in darkness like those long dead therefore my spirit faints within me the the the writer here is looking at everything that was wrong he was looking at some of those watch out moments and then he goes on to say my heart is appalled within me but I remember the days of old in other words yes I took a step that was not the right direction and I felt that check of the of the presence of God and the leading of God but I only knew to go back one step to that spot where I knew God had met me before and then I could recalibrate my steps in Direction with God remember I remember the former things or or the days of old I meditate on all you have done everything that happened along this way I meditate on those things because remember it's the experience that builds trust it's time that builds trust I meditate on all the things that you have done I Ponder The Works of your hands I stretch out my hands to you I'm reaching out saying God is this the right direction is this the right path my soul thirsts for you like a parched land answer me quickly oh Lord because I feel my spirit failing hide not your face from me lest I be like those that go down into the pit verse eight let me hear in the morning your steadfast love for in you I trust notice the writer here talked about all the things that had happened previously and he goes back to it because of these things I can trust in you finding the will of God and his plan and purpose for our life starts by reflecting on what God has done in the past and the trajectory that those experience those experiences and those things had me on that if I don't continue in that direction like it's not because God hasn't already done it in the past and pointed that way reading on let me hear in the morning your steadfast love for in you I trust make me know the way I should go for to you I lift up my soul deliver me from my enemies oh Lord I have fled to you for Refuge teach me oh Lord teach me to do your will teach me God when I'm here and I go to take a step Teach Me God With The be careful the check the watching teach me oh Lord to do your will for you are my God let your good spirit lead me on level ground in other words when I'm here and I don't know the step to take if I keep my eyes on him y'all may not have realized it but I never look far away from Brother Dan to make sure I I could watch him and if even if I took a step I could see him getting ready and I could take back and recalibrate teach me oh Lord to do your will doing the will of God is not something that comes natural pursuing the plan and purpose of God does not come natural to humanity it is not something that is is just willy-nilly we just walk in that direction and all of a sudden it's going to be fine it takes a plan it takes a purpose and it takes something to be taught in Matthew 19 we read the passage I didn't give him the scripture Matthew 1913-15 which is our key verse for this month it says bring the that they brought the children to Jesus and he looked at them and said suffer the little children to come unto me for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven can I say it like this children have to be taught there's a lot of things they will never learn on their own just like we if we're going to follow God's will for our life we have to be taught and our mindset and our ideals and everything within us must say to God on a consistent and daily basis teach me oh Lord to do your will teach me your will teach me your plan teach me your purpose and if it's only one step at a time I can't think of anybody that can say your baby when they first started walking all of a sudden stood up and ran a marathon I anybody got a like a prodigy here the babies always start with one step two steps they don't automatically run from the living room to the kitchen to get you a Coke Zero out of the refrigerator it's a process that has to be taught it has to be taught it has to be taught and if you're going to be taught you've got to be led by the spirit and if you're not led by the spirit you are not going to be in the will of God for your life his will and plan and purpose for our lives may not have a direct path I know the the image here may not have been clear for some of y'all that couldn't see but it wasn't here and then immediately straight on down the line but there were some side steps there were some steps over here where I had to go here there were some I had to go at a different angle and it didn't seem like I was going very far but following the will of God may not make sense to us but if we're pursuing him and we're asking him to teach us and to lead us then we may have to understand that it may not be a direct path it may seem unconventional and it may seem odd to us but God has a plan and purpose where he's taking us there may be setbacks yeah I had a few there may be things along the path but if I'm asking God to teach me his will and to show me his plan and purpose I'm asking him those setbacks will be more setups that's what they're going to be because without that setback I wouldn't have known which way not to go I could sit here and and tell you guys story after Story were pursuing the call of God and pursuing the direction of God for our family's life there were some missteps there were some setbacks but I'm so thankful because every one of those setbacks set up something even more incredible I thought I was making the right steps in the moment and I may have and it may have been all part of God's plan to take me through some turmoil to take me through some storms but ultimately I was keeping my direction on him and yeah there were some side side steps and there were some backtracks and there were some pains and there were some heartaches but man keeping my eyes and keeping our eyes as a family on Jesus and say God teach us your will lead us by your spirit made that difference in where we are today versus where we could have been I I I sit here and I I know people close to me that have gone through similar situations but they looked their they took their eyes off of instead of keeping on the direction God was having them go in they made some other missteps and they kept going on when God was like watch it and all because their mindset was not God teach me your will they looked instead to their own understanding they looked instead to their own feelings because can I just say this feelings lie feelings lie because feelings are completely subjective one moment somebody can say the exact same thing to you that they say to you tomorrow and today you're going to get angry and tomorrow you give them the biggest hug they've ever seen feelings lie and yet we depend on those more than almost any other element as a human as a human culture now I know there's some of y'all that are completely emotionless you're just stoic robots and that's okay we love you I know we can't hug you but we love you anyway but there may also be days of constant progression where you're able to move forward but for every two or three of those days there might be a an angle backwards or a side step because God's plan doesn't make sense to us but it makes perfect sense to the one with the plan finding his will and finding his plan and purpose starts with a very basic element of this I've got to kick my own mind and kick my own feelings my own wisdom my own rationale my own understanding I've got to kick all that to the side and say it may not make sense to me but if God doesn't warn me here I'm going to keep moving this direction because this is where God is taking me there may be days of searching there may be days of seeking there may be days where you hit your feet and hit your knees and throw your arms up and surrender but the fact of the matter is is that next day has to be a day where you take a step because if you don't step there will be no Clarity in the direction and the will God has for your life his will for us requires action on our part First Kings 19 I know I've got about 10 minutes minutes First Kings 19 we read the story of Elijah y'all know Elijah right the prophet man we know his we know his glory triumphant moment where he had all the prophets of Baal right and he's like torturing them he's tormenting them he's talking trash to them God comes down consumes his sacrifice and then after letting them try to do their thing all day they're cutting themselves he's mocking their God mocking them and then all of a sudden God comes down blows up that whole thing consumes that sacrifice that conventional wisdom said it shouldn't have happened and Elijah then kills all these prophets and you know what happens the very next chapter what I say about feelings lie Elijah got all up in his Fields nobody likes me I'm the only one go here where are you and I'm going to tell you what he had the experiences to build that trust and yet all because a woman started pursuing him with the mindset of I'm going to kill you he went and hid out in the cave terrified anyway again no time to talk about that now anyway so all of these things happen God like provides food for Elijah brings it down supernaturally Angel wakes him up say hey look dude I've cooked all these Smoked Meats for you it's gonna be delicious Chow Down man here some barbecue sauce and some ketchup like God provided this meal for Elijah and then the very next section of this scripture in in uh First Kings chapter 19 we read Elijah hiding out in the cave seeking a word and direction from God finally he's like okay maybe I was just hungry maybe that's why I was letting that woman get to me that way I don't know and I know I'm paraphrasing the story a little bit go back and read it there's some elements there but gets to this point where Elijah is so desperate for God's Direction in his life to know what comes next to have some clarity be brought to him that it says in verse 9 of of of First Kings chapter 19 there he came to a cave and lodged in it and behold the word of the Lord came to him and said to him what are you doing here L you this is not where you're supposed to be that's the way I read it like it's not exactly the way it's written but that's kind of the tone I'm getting from this it's like why are you here why are you here verse verse uh 19 says this I have been a very jealous I have been very jealous for the Lord the god of hosts for the people of Israel have forsaken your Covenant thrown down your altars and killed your prophets with a sword and I even I am left there he goes back to his pity party right so God says okay Elijah I know you're looking at what lies ahead but do you not remember these things that have already happened in your life you're standing about halfway through or three4 of the way through where I want to take you will you just pause for a minute and look back at all the things that I've done and he goes on to say Elijah go out on the mountain and what happens is Elijah goes out on the mountain and the Bible says that the Lord passed by or didn't pass by but like caused there to be a great wind had Elijah already seen the wind he had seen God operate in the wind it was a past experience for him but the Bible says that God God was not in the wind and then he went and it was the next thing was an earthquake you know do you think God that Elijah had seen elements of an earthquake in his past he had seen God operate in the earthquake and God you know causes earthquake to happen and still the Bible says it wasn't there I just imagine all these different things are things Elijah had experienced they built his experience by behind him and God was trying to bring to his mind the things that had already occurred in his life the things where God had already shown up and laid out a direction and a plan because after the earthquake came the fire and he had definitely seen the fire and all these things and it was a more recent experience because when we're talking about the fire that's what fell on Mount Carmel it was a it was the most recent experience for him and that was what came right there in that moment and Elijah then began to realize he was sending too much time looking there and looking there and so he began to turn and what he saw in the process was God come through in a new way for him that he had never experienced he saw God reveal his plan and direction for him in a new way because the Bible says that they came after the after the fire came a still Small Voice there was more prophecy in that still Small Voice for what lay ahead of Elijah then every fire every earthquake every bit of wind that Elijah had already experienced but he had to stop looking there and build upon that trust to say Okay God what's next and it's after the wind where Elijah begins to have a conversation with God and God says hey there's a man by the name of Elisha that you're going to Mentor there's a man by the name of Elisha that's going to take up your mantle there's a man by the name of elishah that's going to continue on the work you've already done oh there's a guy by the name of J that's going to save and cleanse everything you're worried about hey there's these things that are happening and in operation that now I'm ready because now you've seen me not for what I've done but you've turned your direction now to say okay now God where are you taking me and now here's Elisha and now here's ju here's all these things that are going to solve out the last few days of Elijah's life all because he began to say okay I'm going to trust in the Lord one of my all-time favorite scriptures is found in Proverbs chapter 3 trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding but in all your ways acknowledge Him and He Shall direct thy paths I'm I'm coming to a close here guys but I want to share just two quick stories there's there's an account given of a Scottish woman that used to go around selling like Breads and uh apparel and things like that and she would go to these different communities in Scotland and she would every time she'd come to a crossroad she would put a stick pointing a certain direction to let her know that she had already been that way and so what happened with this particular woman is one day somebody walked up on her and she's throwing the stick up in the air and when it lands she looks at it and then she picks it up again and throws it in the air and then it lands and she looks at it she picks it up and throws it up in the air again finally the the person that's watching this little Scottish mer mertile woman says why why do you keep tossing the stick why did you toss the stick more than once the woman then replied she says because it keeps pointing to the left and I want to take the road right and we laugh and we find a little humor in that story but often times that's how we approach God's will for us like God what what if while that was here I I started keep trying to turn the way and God's like no no no but that's what we do we throw the stick up in the air when all God really wants us to do is surrender to his word and his will there was a well-known evangelist of the late 19th century and even into the earliest 20th century by the name of William Wilbur Chapman and he recounts the story of when he was able to listen to General William Boo the founder of the the Salvation Army speak and general boo who at the time that he heard him speak was past 80 years of age and Dr Chapman listened reverently as as the old General spoke of the trials and the conflicts and the victories that he had been on and then the American evangelist asked the general he said please to tell me your secret to success Dr Chapman says that General boo hesitated for a second and then he saw the tears coming into his eyes and begin to roll down his cheeks he said I will tell you the secret God has had all there was of me God has had all there was of me there have been men with greater brains than I men with greater opportunities but from the day I got the poror of London on my heart and a vision of what Jesus Christ could do with the poor of London I made up my mind that God would have all of of William Booth that there was and if there is anything he goes on to say there was anything in the power of anything of power in the Salvation Army it is because God has had all the Adoration of my heart and all the power of my will and all the influence of My Life Dr Chapman said he went away with an understanding that with General from that meeting with General Booth with an understanding that the greatness of Man's power is in the measure of surrender we can have everything we want to have but if we don't take on ourselves that mindset of God take all of me take every bit of me it is in that moment of total surrender that a Clarity of God's plan and his will for our lives beyond those foundational pieces we discussed is is in that moment of total surrender when we say God I don't care what it cost me I don't care what I have to do take all of me in that moment that God will begin to remove the clouds and the fog away and begin to reveal to each of us the plan and the will he has for our lives you want to know why you've been stuck in the same spot I'll tell you tonight can we stand I'll tell you real quick the reason you've been stuck in the same spot and it seems like you're spinning your wheels for so long is because we've lost number one that foundational piece of God's will for us do good love Mercy walk humbly with our God but secondly it's because we've yet to offer ourselves oh yeah we we pay at lip service but we've yet to offer ourselves in complete complete surrender to God's plan and purpose for our life there's some of us that have felt a call to the mission field brother Rob we won't surrender there's some of us that know God has something greater that we should be doing but we won't surrender there's a plan there's a will there's a purpose that goes beyond what we see right now and if you want that fog to clear sometimes we just got to lift our hands and our voices and say God I'm standing in your presence God take all of me before they come and lead us in worship tonight I wonder all over this place can we just lift our hands and and pray a prayer again of surrender I know this is just a one moment kind of scenario tonight and it it requires us to build on this and not just do it in one moment but God there's some things in our lives there's some things in my life Lord I I know I have to let go of and I know I have to surrender to allow your word and your will Lord Jesus and your purpose to be revealed God that your will goes beyond what I can see right now God help me Lord Jesus not to focus intently on what I see right now God but to be able to go beyond that and and move beyond that Lord Jesus to trust you with everything I have within me God to surrender all of me unto you Jesus and to trust you God to lift you you up in everything I do and to magnify your name Jesus God and to bring glory and honor to you Lord Jesus with the steps that I Take God I want to have your will in Operation God I want your plan and your purpose to be working in my life oh God lord Jesus come on come on we got a couple minutes here can we just let a prayer of of surrender ReSound in this room right now father Lord Jesus God you see the depths of my heart oh God lord Jesus you know and you can see the things that I've tried to hide away Lord that I I can't surrender just yet God I'm asking right now Lord God reveal that to me Lord Jesus Take All of Me Lord God lord Jesus I want to be broken God I want to be completely open before you Jesus Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Jesus Hallelujah Jesus Hallelujah Jesus Hallelujah Jesus Hallelujah Lord God Hallelujah Jesus Hallelujah
