Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
Thank-you notes in the middle of a season
- Speaking from home in the middle of the season that has everyone separated, he reads aloud the thank-you notes he has written for the unlikely mercies of these weeks.
- The notes are the sermon in miniature: in the midst of this season there are still things to be thankful for.
- He grounds it in the word: First Thessalonians says, give thanks in all things.
- He invites the students to write their own thank-you notes — humorous or very serious — for what they can thank God for in the midst of this.
Scriptures: 1 Thessalonians 5:18
Give thanks — he is good
- You cannot trust God and be unthankful.
- First Chronicles 16 and 34: O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endures forever.
- Thanksgiving rests on God's goodness and his enduring mercy, not on the season around us.
Scriptures: 1 Chronicles 16:34
Perilous times and the unthankful heart
- In this odd season he turns to Second Timothy chapter 3: know also that in the last days perilous times shall come.
- Paul's catalogue of the last days — lovers of their own selves, covetous, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy — names the unthankful heart as a mark of the age.
- Some are ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
- He closes in prayer over the students, the parents, and the church family, and blesses them with the sermon's text: thanks in all things, for this is the will of God concerning you in Christ Jesus.
Scriptures: 2 Timothy 3:1-7

oh hey are you guys doing tonight I uh it's just in the middle of right now some some thank-you notes you know we're coming to the end of this time of quarantine and this stay at home order and I was just uh you know first Thessalonians says give thanks and all things so I was right now some some thank-you notes here it says maybe you could relate or maybe help me but thank you Cove in nineteen forty Qing me that purchasing toilet paper is first then the bread and milk let's see yeah thank you covet night team for causing TV commercials to go from buyatoyota.com buy a Toyota go buy a Toyota Thank You kovat nineteen for forcing everyone to file their taxes so they could get the stimulus check hope you were doing that beforehand but thank you Thank You covet 19 for finally giving a legit excuse for why no one was at the birthday party hope that wasn't you students but let's see thank you Kovach night team for answering the prayers of those saints who have wanted control of the thermostat and the sound volume during the church service I think all the parents maybe could help me write this one Thank You covin 1940 Chur appreciation month thank you kovat 19 for showing me what I need and do not need for showing me those things which are completely unnecessary in my life thank you kovat 19 for showing me that God is not confined to a building Thank You kovat 19 for giving me more time with that which is closest and most precious to me that is my family Thank You kovat 19 for showing me the true value of gathering together with my church family Thank You covin 19 forgiving me time to evaluate my walk with God Thank You kovat 19 for showing me the status of my relationship with God when I'm not around hundreds of people praying and worshiping I could truly see my walk with God Thank You kovat 19 for showing me why I put all my hope all my trust and God for showing me that God will never fail that in all things give thanks I don't know about you but you could probably write out whether they're humorous or very serious something that in the midst of Kovan 19 that you could be thankful for because the scripture says and in all things give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you that God does not shut down when everything else does that God does not crumble when the economy does that God does not quarantine when everything else is quarantined that God is working no matter what it looks like so in essence it doesn't no it doesn't matter what the circumstance is but in all things I could give thanks you know I would say this evening in our time together throughout the past few months of gathering behind a TV screen we really could evaluate just the past few weeks and make a list of things I challenge you to sit down with your family and make a list of things that you've learned during that during this time make a list of things that maybe you want to get rid of make a list of things that maybe you want to keep maybe prayer was not something that was happening in your home but it's been happening over the past few weeks and you should keep that maybe there's some things that you've eliminated maybe some things that you've saw that hey those are unnecessary things to purchase those are unnecessary things that are taking all of our time and taking our focus maybe you keep those things put away and Kovan 19 has allowed you to get rid of the things that are unimportant take on some things I challenge you to write out some thank-you notes to covin 19 because ultimately even in the midst of what seems like this is no fun this is not what I had planned to do for the end of the school year this is not what I planned for the beginning of the summer that in all things we should give thanks because thankfulness is the core of seemingly almost everything in our walk with God let's think it that think and look at it this way what sin could we read in the Bible that wouldn't be cured with a dose of thankfulness would Adam and Eve had ate of the tree of knowledge of good and evil had they been thankful for the rest of the garden with the children of Israel had wondered and taken so much time in the wilderness had they just been thankful and blessed God's name that they weren't in Egypt look at the whole Bible through that lens look at your life through that lens tell me a sin that thankfulness won't cure students this evening strong tower students you know you don't disobey parents that you're thankful for you're less likely to disrespect somebody that you're thankful for thankfulness our world today all the messed up views and ideologies could be cured with a shower of thankfulness I would say this evening addictions begin many times based on unthankfulness you don't abort something you're thankful for you don't leave a spouse you're thankful for you don't abandon a child you're thankful for but when you become entitled and you look across the table or you look across the room and pride and jealousy set up camp in your heart and your mind tells you what you have is not enough you begin to eat of that which is forbidden I need what they have I need to know what they know you begin to plant seeds of excuses rather than bear the the fruit of thankfulness and and plant those seeds of expectation and faith because of what you already have you put this seed in the ground of excuses and you bear the fruit of unthankfulness because you will never like what it tastes like and you'll never be pleased because the lust of the flesh is ongoing and that pride of life is never going to be satisfied you're going to continue to step on others as you climb the ladder you know climbing the ladder with God and thankfulness doesn't have to push down others you don't stand all of a sudden at the top with no friends you stand down at the top with the church because the church is going to be called out it's a lonely place when you live in the garden of unthankfulness instead of building a foundation of faith and expectation based upon this thankfulness that God has commanded us to do and this action of thankfulness that in all things for what God has done and where God has put us you know that that unthankfulness create such a false identity and and and fake fruit and coveting others and hypocrisy and acting like something we're not because ultimately we didn't allow God to provide through faith and expectation but we looked across the table and we decided that we wanted what they had I want to be who they are I want what they have because you can't trust God and be unthankful 1st chronicles 16 and 34 says oh give thanks unto the Lord for he is good for his mercy endureth forever thankfulness is forever because his goodness is forever thankfulness is forever because God is forever you you're looking forward to heaven all it's gonna be is us giving thanks to him and blessing his name for eternity because we are - in all things give thanks you know the gospel says Jesus fed 5000 with five loaves and two fish he gave thanks the scripture says in the Gospels if you record you see read how they recorded the story says they blessed the bread and he broke it the lesson here is so powerful to hear Jesus thank God for what he had in his hand he had taken that basket of the lads lunch he blessed it and he broke it and then it multiplied the miracle of multiplication happened when it was set up on two pillars and that was thankfulness and brokenness thankfulness and brokenness can you be thankful when you are broken can you be thankful when things are uncertain can you be thankful when you don't have everything the way that you would plan for it to go can you be thankful senior even though that you are not getting to do everything that the every other class before you got to do can you be thankful parents that you've gotten more time your students have you can you be thankful during this this odd season of Cova 19 second Timothy chapter 3 and verse number one said this know also that in the last days perilous times shall come for men shall be lovers of their own selves covetous boasters proud blasphemers disobedient to parents unthankful unholy without natural affection trucebreakers false accusers and content fierce despisers of those that are good traitors heady highminded lovers of pleasures more than lovers of god having a form of godliness but denying the power thereof from such turn away for of this sort are they which creep into homes and lead captives silly women laden with sins led away with divers lust ever learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth you're always going to see this process we see this almost this exact list here in a couple other passages but we go to 2nd Timothy 3 this evening to look at it lovers of your own self covetous looking across the table boasting in false pride something that you're boasting about that you're a blaspheme the scripture says but it then it gets into two things it just seemed so small in our minds sometimes we put things such as disobedient to parents students and unthankfulness and in this category over here of just something that's not that big of a deal but we see it here stuck in in the midst of of unholy and without natural affection boy we sure do talk about being unholy we sure do talk about those without natural affection than and we would say that homosexuality is such a strong sin over here but in the same process and category of unholy and and in homosexuality without natural affection we have disobedient to parents and we have unthankfulness unthankfulness is something that we can be characterized and not even realize it because a lot like a lot of emotions that are inside of us as humanity that unthankfulness if unexpressed is unknown we have to express thankfulness it's like the ten lepers Jesus stands it says where are the nine you can't tell me that those lepers weren't thankful but they sure didn't express it so if it's unexpressed it's unknown students I challenge you parents I challenge you FAC Church family I challenge you this evening make a list of things you're thankful for express them to the people that you're thankful to express them to the God that in all things he deserves thanks parents on I know that this time may be uncertain students I know this time may be different in your at home but if there's ever a time where students you should tell your parents I thank you for everything you've done for me during this time thank you for being there thank you for doing this thank you for doing that thank you for putting a roof over my head thank you for giving me food to eat thank you for for being that that comforting voice thank you in all things unthankfulness has deep roots I see evidence of unthankfulness all the time no matter what your home life look like looks like what you do or do not have great job nice clothes if you have a if you have intelligence or athleticism or the newest iPhone or you have a girlfriend or a boyfriend students or if you live in a bed of roses or what seems like a barren desert unthankfulness is not an option that no matter what that looks like around you no matter your culture no matter your situation you can find something to sit down and be thankful for so I challenge you this evening that in all things give thanks in the midst of Cova night thing find something to be thankful for because if no if you're if you're your home if your family your friends you can't find thankfulness and those things you can always thank God that he's given you another day to breathe his air to to choose his mercy to choose his love to choose him to be the ultimate father to him to be the perfect parent through him to be who he is in our lives so this evening I'd like to close and I know that this time we pray is coming to an end and I pray that we're able to get back in here on Sunday and and be able to worship together and and and be able to to to hug each other and shake hands and and be the body of Christ and encourage one another in worship and and word and and just sharing a testimony but I pray this evening that before everything goes back to what I feel like maybe a new normal it may not be exactly the way that it was before but when we come back and things begin to get back and Steffan jobs open open back up and churches open back up and you get back to the way of life I pray that you're able to sit down this evening with your family you're able to sit down this evening maybe get out your phone and create a note and just make a list of things in Kovan 19 that you're thankful for express them to everybody you can but most of all express them to the God who created you because if it's unexpressed it's unknown a nun thankfulness is something that we do not want to build our life upon I challenge you this evening to lift your hands wherever you're at I know that may seem awkward but could we lift our hands and thanks and gratitude and go to God and it's I'm a prayer before we close down this evening god I pray that this evening God that you would go to wherever God each of each and every family individual is gathered this evening god I pray that you would wrap your arms around them god I pray that you would comfort them with these words this evening God that you are here in the midst of everything that we're going through God but we know that you consistently come to us God that you woke us up this morning that you God have done so much for us today that we don't even truly understand because your ways and your thoughts are way above ours God but this evening God we want to come to you and thanks and in gratitude God we want to lift up holy hands God we want to give you praise and glory and adoration god I worship you this evening because I don't deserve to be where I'm at god I don't deserve the things you've done for me God but you are so deserving God and you are so worthy this evening God that I want to worship You God not just in spirit and not just in what I'm feeling God but and the truth of what I know God that in all things God that all things work together for the good so in all things I will give thanks Oh God god I bless your wonderful name this evening come on church family could you bless his name as we exit throughout throughout this time as we're we're coming and we see a lot at the end of the tunnel God we give you thanks God we give you glory god I thank you that that we've not had anybody that we know of in our church family effective with Kovan 19 god I thank you that you kept your hand or protection God on so many God that we know that there's been families affected we know that there's been people that's had distant relatives oh god that's that's passed away but even in the midst of death even in the midst of sickness in the midst of quarantine and covet 19 God you are in control how did we give you thanks we give you glory and we give you honor and the precious name of Jesus we pray amen and amen god bless you this a evening Thanks in all things for this is the will of God concerning you in Christ Jesus god bless you
