Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

The woman at Jesus's feet

  • A woman of the city, a sinner, came into Simon the Pharisee's house where Jesus sat at meat, bringing an alabaster box of ointment — into a room where she was not supposed to be and was not welcome.
  • She stood behind him weeping, washed his feet with her tears, wiped them with the hairs of her head, kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment — doing for him everything the host should already have done.
  • Simon had given Jesus no water for his feet, no kiss, and no oil for his head; Jesus answered his unspoken judgment with the creditor who frankly forgave two debtors — the one forgiven most loves most — and said of the woman: her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much.

Scriptures: Luke 7:37-47

Brokenness is the fragrance

  • Church folks can grow so accustomed to sitting in a room with Jesus that it takes somebody off the streets to remind them how he ought to be treated — God forbid a service go by in which we forget to wash his feet, kiss his hand, and anoint his head.
  • What happened to the broken box happened in the woman herself: she was a broken vessel, and when the box broke, the fragrance filled the room and changed the atmosphere.
  • Brokenness is not only for the worst season of a life; a person must stay broken in the best season too — humble and grateful, honest about worry, sickness, doubt, and family trouble, instead of shielding it all behind having it together.

Filled to be poured out

  • We are not filled with his Spirit simply to house his Spirit; we are filled in order to pour out — the anointing is known by brokenness, by how long it has been since we fell on our faces and wept before God and were vulnerable with somebody else.
  • The outer man shields the inner man: walls go up, conversations stay filtered, and the performance of having it all together keeps the Spirit from being released on our children, our spouses, and our friends.
  • God works in the opposite order to man — spirit first, then soul and body; and the choice stands before everyone: you can be broken, or something will break you; you can fall on the rock, or the rock can fall on you.

The new covenant and the running father

  • Gideon's army, reduced from thirty-two thousand to three hundred, won when the jars over the torches were broken and the light came out — not by might, not by power, but by his Spirit; the breaking is what brings the victory.
  • There is a new covenant because of brokenness: God promised to make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not according to the covenant he made with their fathers when he brought them out of the land of Egypt — which covenant they brake.
  • The prodigal came home broken, expecting the village's shame — clay pots broken at his feet and a public cutting-off — but the father outran the condemnation and ran to him; the devil sometimes tells the truth about what we are, and the answer is a broken prayer and a Father who is already running.

Scriptures: Jeremiah 31:31-32

Pour it out

  • The call is stewardship, not ownership: hurting or blessed, pour it out where you are, because the next season is determined by how this season is stewarded, and God moves a person on when they are broken where they stand.
  • He closes by slowing the room down: linger in his presence, acknowledge who he is, and be honest about who you are — a broken and contrite heart he will not refuse, and those who have poured out are about to be poured upon.
  • The capture ends during his closing prayer, mid-sentence; the sermon's final words are truncated in the source.

the Lord is great, greatly to be praised. His presence is here in this place tonight. I'm thankful for it. If you want to stand your feet, we will go to the Gospel of Luke and we will go to Luke chapter number 7. want to say that we are continuing to and if you would bind with me this week to continue to pray for pastor as he recovers and I know that he is feeling better in filling the prayers of the people um as he is recovering but if we could be in prayer for him that he would have a full recovery as he has full intentions of being here on Wednesday night and to be in the house of the Lord as you know that that's where his heart is at today but we pray that the Lord would continue to strengthen him and to heal his body. And uh just a wonderful, wonderful day here in the house of the Lord. We all give Pastor Ericson a hand for the word of the Lord that we heard this morning. Thankful, thankful for the word of the Lord. I heard they had a wonderful, wonderful service at the Sevirville campus. Uh brother Jacob Sullivan ministered there and they had a wonderful time. great reports coming uh from all of our campuses today and we're just thankful for what the Lord what the Lord is doing. Um, I have uh I have put Brother McBroom in a little bit of a bind over the past hour or so as in I didn't really know what I was going to uh preach. And so he has a few tiles ready and so we're going to play a little game right now as he don't know which one I'm going to go to. But I'm going to go to Luke chapter 7 and verse number 37. I had no clue what the choir was going to sing tonight and they pretty much already sang my message. So, I might as well preach a little bit of it and we'll get in the altar and see what the Lord will do. How about that? Luke chapter 7. Brother Josh has already surmised it, but let's read this story tonight. And behold, a woman in the city which was a sinner when she knew that Jesus sat at me in the Pharisees house brought an alabaster box of ointment. Verse 38 says, "And she stood behind him weeping and began to wash his feet with tears and did wipe them with the hairs of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment." Now when the Pharisees which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself. I always love it when stuff's written down like that. It's like, did he tell you later that he told himself? How I mean, obviously you you've got it. I just love things like that because you know that there's just a sense of we need to know it, but there's so much that we can learn from that. They didn't he didn't say it out loud, but a lot of times you can just kind of read the room, you know, you can kind of tell what they're saying. I bet it was a lot like that. It was got kind of tense of Pharisees were there. They saw it, the spirit within them, the tension in the room. This man, if he were a prophet, he would have known who and what man or woman this is that touchth him, for she is a sinner. Jesus answered and said unto him,"Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee." And he saith, "Master, say on." There was a certain creditor which had two debtors. The one owed 500 p and the other 50. And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, Simon, which of them will love him most? Simon answered and said, I suppose that he to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged. And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, "Seeest thou, this woman, I entered into thine house, and thou gavest me no water for my feet, but she's washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. Thou gavest me no kiss, but this woman since the time she came in has not ceased to kiss my feet, my head with oil. Thou did not anoint, but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment. Notice all of that. Simon was supposed to be washing his feet. He said, "You didn't even give me water to wash my own feet. You were supposed to kiss my hand and anoint my head and here she is kissing my feet and anointing my feet. She didn't have what she felt like even access to approach his hands or his face. I'll just fall at his feet. Wherefore I say unto thee, Simon, her sins which are many are forgiven. For she loved much, but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little. I want to preach for just a few moments tonight. For just a few moments on this title, Pour it out. Pour it out. If you would lay your Bibles down, lift your hands to heaven. Let's just ask God to speak to us for a moment tonight. Lord, we love you. Come on. Could you lift up your voice? Lord, we love you. Your presence is so real, God. We're nothing without it, Lord. We're lost without it. We're broken without it. Lord, we can't function without your spirit, without your presence. Lord, we need you in this room tonight to do what only you can do. I know that there's lives that need to be touched. There's situations that need to be God mended. There's broken lives, God, that need a touch of your presence, Lord. We're here for you to do whatever you want to do in this room, Lord. Have your way, Lord. We want to see your glory, God. We want to see you move and have your way in this place in Jesus name. Everybody said, "Amen." >> Amen. You may be seated tonight. As the woman of the city comes in, it's very obvious that she's in a place she's not supposed to be. And it's very obvious as well that it's very obvious here that that that she's not only in a place she's not supposed to be, but she's in a very kind of I don't know. I could just see it being kind of an awkward situation. Um, you know, this is kind of a who's who gathering that they've invited Jesus to and the religious people and the Pharisees and the important people. I guess you could say it that way. um showed up and and there is a there's there's this woman who makes her way into the party and and it it it's it's not only a setting or situation where she's not supposed to be there, but I'd say most of all, she wasn't welcome. I don't know if you've ever been in one of those situations. Anybody ever showed up to a party that you weren't supposed to be at? Showed up somewhere you weren't supposed to be at? Ever walked into a, you know, and I try to back my way out. you know, wasn't supposed to be here. Um, you know, maybe maybe you've been the one throwing the party and all of a sudden somebody walked in that wasn't invited. Now we can all raise our hands, right? Huh? Yeah. It's okay. You can raise your hand. You know, how'd they get an invitation? You invite one person, they bring the whole family. You know, can you imagine just the awkwardness that's already going on in the room? And not only does she enter in and she's this sinner, this woman of the streets and and um all that happens, but she brings in this costly box and you know the story, the alabaster box. And today they say it would be worth somewhere around $50,000 in our currency. And she uses this costly ointment to basically do unto him everything that Simon should have already done unto him. And so as as she begins to worship him, if you can imagine, if you can imagine with me, maybe probably the best analogy I could give you, has anybody ever been any of you men ever been in the car and all of a sudden your wife starts spraying hairspray? >> Huh? Two hands. Bless all of a sudden you're rolling down the Huh? I was privileged when I first moved here to coach everything. Everything. Flag football, cricket, I don't know what all we played. Chess, we played all kind of stuff that I didn't know existed when I moved here. Um, but I coached girls volleyball for a very short time. Um, it wasn't short enough, but it um I I'll never forget getting on and trying to transport a group of of of of high school young ladies. When you got off the bus, it was like this big cloud just exited. You know, you felt like you just walked out of Bath and Body Works. It's like somebody's spraying this and somebody's spraying that and somebody's, you know, you you've got that option. Or you can walk into the boys locker room at halftime. Huh? You can get hit in the face with axe and body armor. >> Old spice. It's like you can kind of take your That's why I I kind of imagine you say you have a really weird mind, but I can just imagine she breaks this ointment and it fills the room. >> It all of a sudden just fills the atmosphere. And so obviously this this scent, this aroma that fills the room and changes the atmosphere, all of a sudden they're like, "This is a waste." Every what are they doing? They're they're saying within themselves, but obviously with their body language, they're all like, "What's she doing here? And why is she using that on him at this time?" It was all a lot of tension going on. But I I I want to just always remind us, this story always brings me to this point and I never want to over overlook it, but God help us that we church folks become accustomed to sitting in a room with Jesus and it takes somebody off the streets to come in and remind us how we're supposed to treat him. God forbid we forget to wash his feet. >> God forbid a service go by and we don't kiss his hand and anoint his head. You say, "What does that mean?" It means we we come in and we're just used to his presence. We're just used to Jesus. I grew up doing this. I've heard the choir before. I've been in the prayer service before. I've done this before. And you become accustomed to it. And before you know it, you bypass the protocol of what it means to even have a party, what it means to even be in his presence. And so I always want to treat Jesus with the utmost respect. The room obviously filled with this fragrance. I don't ever want our gatherings to be a place that is lacking that fragrance that that sweet smelling aroma as the psalmist would write. That is praise unto our God. Amen. And again, it's it's it's all should have been there. That the oil from the anointing of his head should have already been in the room, >> but it was absent. It was absent of what should have been. And so she comes in and through her brokenness not only breaks the box but she is a broken vessel herself. And just as Jesus does and just as he does through his parables and we see in the scripture even in the Old Testament types and shadows and stories we see that what is happening physically is also happen in happening in that person. What is happening perhaps to this broken box is happening to this person's broken body. She is in a terrible state. She's in a terrible situation. And we see this over and over again. We see a city that is that is represented by a man of the pausy. Well, that man of the pausy represents the spiritual condition of the city. >> They have all the mental capacity, but they don't have any legs on what they know. We see this over and over again that there that the the condition of what is happening the storyline is also parallel with what is the spiritual condition of the person that Jesus is trying to minister to that the word or the gospel is trying to trying to reach. So I I want to just bring this before you. Very simple thought, very simple message. But God let us be broken. Here's the thing about it. If I ask everybody to raise their hand who wants to volunteer to be broken, we would all kind of slide our hands in our pockets, right? Nobody wants to go through a season. Nobody wants to be humbled. Nobody wants to be put on flat on their back. Nobody wants to go because in your mind you think when you think of brokenness and you think of of what this represents that she was in a broken state and she was in this place of worship that when I say that that we must be broken before God, some of you immediately think that that's going to be painful and that comes through hurt and that comes through trials and that comes through seasons. Yes, sometimes it does. But it's very important that no matter if you're in a trial or pain or in the worst season of your life or you're in the best season of your life, we still should be broken. So, we must go back and define what it means to be broken before God. Because I think too many times we come in and we try to act like we got it all together and God knows not one of us do. We come in and we shield ourselves and we protect ourselves from the idea that anybody would ever think that I got something going on wrong with me, >> that I've got worry in my mind, that I've got a situation at work, that my my family's not doing exactly as good as I'd like it to do. I've got this going on. I got sickness in my body. I've got doubt in my mind. This person said this about me. And I I want to just tell you that it requires brokenness in all seasons of our lives for God to truly be worshiped. >> God isn't mad at you when life hurts. And God isn't just all of a sudden thinking you're this you're the special one when everything's not going bad. It's a process of seasons and life, how things come and go. Can you be broken and humble? Can you live in gratitude and thankfulness in all seasons? But when this fragrance fills the room, I can see the emotion. I can imagine what goes on. There's there's a sense of of of of of obviously the the wasteful thought that comes up on their mind. But when when when let me let me ask you this way. Maybe you could process it better in your mind through this question. When you go through life and you display worship or perhaps your life is in a broken state, what fragrance do you give off? Because a lot of people I see are going through broken uncertain seasons and all they give off is pity, victimization. You can't get help because all you want is pity. You can't get out of the unbroken state. And so this aroma that comes from you is one that's stale, that's been sitting for some time, perhaps God's trying to get some things out of you. So when it comes time for your life to bring forth an aroma or a fragrance to the room and your life goes through that season, what does it what does it give off? Say, I'm struggling in your struggle. Is there an a praise that's going up? Is there a presence that's pleasing to God? Because I I want to I want to bring this before us. There is this outer man that is struggling with the inner man. There is this fleshly carnal vessel that is in a struggle with this inward spirit that we claim to have called the Holy Ghost. I talked to our young people about this briefly the other night in just about a 12minute lesson that we had on Wednesday night. And I I want you to understand that we are not we are not filled with his spirit to house his spirit simply. We are filled with his spirit in order to release his spirit. We are filled with it. It's poured into us so that we can pour it out. Sadly today in Christian America, and I know this is a terrible analogy, but it's the way that they reference it as being born again. There's a lot of stillborn spiritual births because someone had a momentary experience in this spiritual. They they were baptized. They were filled with the Holy Ghost and they were filled, but they didn't realize the reason that they were filled was to release the spirit. It's not meant for you to be this perfect vessel that now I got the Holy Ghost and I took this magic pill that makes me a special person and now I walk around and nothing bad is ever going to happen to me and I'm full of the Holy Ghost and all of a sudden the fruit of the spirit just going to start falling off me and I'm just going to share. No, no, no, no, no. It's going to take some discipline and most of all it's going to take brokenness. The same brokenness that that got you to that place to get in a watery grave and become a new creature is the brokenness you're going to have to have tomorrow morning. >> To pour it out so that he can fill you again, >> to break it again the next morning to pour it out so he can fill you again. And then all of a sudden you have a purpose because you are pouring. You have to learn how to release the spirit. That that that's a that's a simple way of me saying that real real real spiritual word called anointing. I'm anointed. Are you? How broken are you? How long's it been since you fell on your face and wept before God? >> How long's it been since you've been vulnerable with somebody else? Huh? It's it's releasing the spirit. You The greatest growth that we'll have with one another is when somebody sees you in a broken state. Nothing is nothing is uh is attractive about somebody who appears to be perfect. Again, appears that's why that that's that's why social media becomes so repulsive to some people. It's like I can never achieve that. They're not achieving that either. You are not perfect. Stop acting like it because it's doing nothing but keeping you from being used by the spirit of God. Some of us are are are we put up these walls to want to appear as if it's okay. I've got it together. There's nothing going wrong with my family and it's going to be okay. And you every time you have a conversation, it's a shielded, filtered conversation to make sure nobody thinks for one second that I've got doubt or I don't even know at this moment that if I died, I'd even make it to heaven. You've got real thoughts and real problems and real issues, but just because you think this is what we're supposed to do, that outer man shields you when all the while God's saying if you'd break that outer man down, that spirit could be released. Because when you break and you pour out, he begins to pour. >> Are you with me? Do you understand my my cycle? I'm trying to give you a little bit of an analogy and a picture to understand. It's not about you just getting the Holy Ghost one time. It's about you releasing the spirit on your kids, on your wife, on your husband, on your friend. It's the fruit of the spirit. It's something that's flowing in and it's flowing out of you. But the outer part, the world that we live in, wants us to all just look like we've got it all together when you really, if you're honest, we may not even like ourselves. It's crazy the statistics of just how many in this room have issues with identity. The only difference between the one person that is okay in their own skin and the person that's not is one is aware of their identity, their their their their, you know, downfalls. The the one that's aware of their issues, that's aware of this is where I struggle. So, I'm going to I'm going to expose myself and I'm going to release my brokenness to people that are strong in that area. say, "Well, how do they do it? How is this person making it? How do they function? How do they?" Because they're willing to be broken. That's the only way. If not, it is a it's a seasonal situation to where eventually they're going to fall apart because the outer man, oh the oh the words of Paul that we could go through about this outer man and this struggle that he would do good, but he he's struggling with this outer man. I would be vulnerable and pray, but I got this outer man. I've got this carnal flesh. I'm telling you tonight that you have to be willing to be broken. Stop trying to manage everything on your own instead of being broken. It's the anointing that God wants to release from each and every one of us. God wants you to stop trying to fix your situation with your own advice or somebody else's advice or some podcast or some book. God wants you to be broken. If you release the spirit, if you release, God wants to work in that order. It is the opposite of what man wants to do. Man wants to work in the form of body, soul, and spirit. God wants to fix you in the opposite order of spirit first. >> If you don't get that spirit right, you'll never get that body and soul right. You can't think your psychologic. You can't get your psyche all into it and try to No, you got to have the spirit to fix what the body is trying to stop. >> Are you with me tonight? You can scroll through and you can swipe through and you can read through and you can try to process and diagnose yourself and and walk through all the things in your your your mental processing and no brokenness. Brokenness before God telling you it's all about brokenness. It's all a show if our outer man is not broken. It's all a show if the outer man is not broken. Brother Josh, if I stand up here tonight, you've already preached half my sermon. If you stand up here tonight with that mic in your hand and that outer man has just any inkling of wanting to be the person that everybody's looking at, it's just a show. We would never feel anything in this room if it was about anybody up here. God forbid that it ever become about any person that's trying to be on an instrument or be in the choir or be on the stage. It It's about the spirit. Oh, I know it's simple. We prayed it this morning in our staff prayer. It's got to be about the spirit. It's got to be about the spirit. If we're in the coffee shop, it's got to be about the spirit. If we're in the parking lot, it's got to be about the spirit. If I'm teaching a kids quest class, it's got to be about the spirit. Why? That's the solution. We're not going we're not going to help or guide anybody through or my personality is not going to get you to heaven and my friendship's not going to No, the spirit is going to be what quickens this mortal body. It's what I start with and it's what's going to take me out of here. I've got to have the presence of God. And it's not just here in me hanging out, my buddy. I've got this house for the Holy Ghost. No, it's a broken vessel that releases it and releases it and releases it. And guess what? Tomorrow, I'm going to have to get this outer man on an altar and break my own nasty flesh to get the spirit released out of me. It's a breaking young people. It's a broken nature. Everything on social media is trying to get you to have this kind of facade where you got it all together. You don't have it all together. And the quicker you get that figured out is the quicker you'll mature. >> The slow launch and the the the the late maturing process of our young people is that they're not willing to be vulnerable in the presence of the almighty God. It's a lack of an all of God. Why? Because I think I've got to have it all together. >> I got to be who I'm portraying on social media. >> God, help us that we ever have a generation that's not willing to be broken in his presence. >> That sits back. This is what it becomes. This is what social media has become. God forbid it ever sneak into the church house, but that's how it works. that we all sit in a room and we watch somebody come up and we watch somebody give themselves in a broken state. They give all they have. They're up here making a fool of themselves. They're up here making a display on themselves. You know how much she had to weep to wash his feet >> and they sit back and say, "My God, what must she have done?" >> Some of us can't be broken because we've got our eyes on other people and their issues. Some of us will never be broken cuz we can't figure out why this person is doing that. I can't believe they're letting her do that. I can't believe they're letting them do that. Can you believe that this is going on? I I I mean, they were just talking about those people last night. God forbid we'd be in the same choir loft with somebody that we have issues with, looking across wondering, "How could they even be up here?" >> God help us. Because here's the scary thing. You can either be broken or something will break you. Because if there's one thing scripture teaches us, God basically goes polar opposite of what our flesh wants to do. And we want to say if it ain't broke, don't fix it. God wants to say, brother Dean, if it ain't broke, break it. >> In fact, I believe he says this, "If it if it ain't broke, I can't use it." >> Some of you are wondering why opportunities aren't coming your way. It's because brokenness has never came your way. And you can either choose it or one day. He said trouble's coming. It's not if, it's when. You can fall on the rock or the rock can fall on you. I can take you through every book. It's in there. You can choose brokenness or brokenness is going to find you. Sadly, that aroma that messes up Christians, messes up families, destroys churches, messes up people is when brokenness comes to somebody and that aroma that is not worship fills the room. But either way, every knee will bow. Every tongue will confess. I challenge you tonight. You have to fight against this world's idea that I got to look like I got it all together. Every single person in this room tonight if we were intentional about the moment that we stand in right now could find something to say, "God, I need you." Well, what have we done? We've just tried to patch it up. We've just tried to make it okay. We've just tried to push it down the road when all the while we'll get back home tonight, lay our head down on the pillow, and it's still a problem. And it's still causing us to doubt God. And it's still causing us to doubt our salvation. And it's still causing us to doubt our sanctification process. I can't even pray to God. I can't even read the word of God. I don't even want to grow. I don't want to do anything. I I'm not even really motivated to church. I'm just going because I really need to have my family there, but I have my doubts and I have my issues because I just keep pushing it down the road when all it's going to take is just one broken moment like you had years ago. You don't know what I've been through. You don't know what I've faced. You don't know what's been said to me. Brokenness is an opportunity. It's not a destination. It's part of the transportation of where God wants to take you. Don't get stuck in a season because you didn't realize that was the releasing of the spirit. Some of you could be in another season allowing blessings and overflow to come from you and touch somebody else's life. Your family could be more healthy. Why? Because you were willing to be broken when you were supposed to be broken instead of just gritting your teeth and holding back the tears. Just saying, "I'm all right. I'll deal with it. I'll just deal with it. I I Nobody's going to see me cry, Dad." Yeah. Seasons have gone by. They may not have seen you cry, but they're suffering because you won't cry. They're suffering because you won't be broken because it's inside of you. And the spirit that you claim to have, I'll just be honest with you, it's not really there because it's supposed to be released. It's not there to be stagnant. It's not there to be stale. It's there to be broken and to fill the room. It'll take you to another level if you can begin to comprehend this idea that fills the scripture we claim to live by. I must decrease. I must be broken for him to increase. In our attempt as mankind to escape the pain and the messiness and the brokenness of our lives, we have missed opportunity after opportunity to not only grow ourselves but to change our world. The breaking is what brings victory and blessings. So I challenge you tonight to pour it out. You say, "I'm hurting." Pour it out. I've been blessed this week. Still need to pour it out. Why? Because that's a borrowed blessing. It's not yours anyways. It's not about ownership. It's about stewardship. And the next season is determined by how you steward this season. Some of us are wondering and we're frustrating and we become stagnant in our relationship with God because we want to move on to the next thing, but we can't steward where we're at. If you could be broken where you're at and you could pour it out where you're at, then God will then move you on to the next season. It's a process. It happens everywhere. Let me move on quickly. I can give you so many examples. I there it's no coincidence that we see that it's the the the place uh of of of Gideon's army is reduced from 32,000 to 300 people. And he and he they they bring him up and they said, "We're going to win this not by the sword and we're not going to win this with all the other things that God could have done." But he said, "I'm going to take and you take these torches, Brother Ericson, and you put these jars over the top of them, and I want you just to stand, shout, and break the jar." Why? because he's just telling you over and over and over and over again in the scriptures, you want to win the battle. Brokenness, it's not by my might. It's not by my power. It's by his spirit. The brokenness allows the light to come out. Right? He is showing you over and over and over and over again, it was the breaking that was their victory. So I'm asking you tonight, are you resisting what is meant to make you usable? Are you resisting what's supposed to make you powerful? Our spirit being released. It it's it's it's powerful. We see that even the new covenant that we see, and I don't have time to go into all of this, but Jeremiah 31:es 31 and 32, you can read that. Behold, the days come, said the Lord, I'll make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not according to the covenant which your fathers in their day took by their hand and and brought out of the land of Egypt, which my covenant they broke. You know why we have a new covenant? Because of brokenness. You know, the first city that was completely destroyed in utter ruin was the city of Galilee. In biblical times, the army comes in, completely leaves it in disarray. Where does the Messiah come to first? I'm telling you, I can take you through scripture after scripture. We can take you from fights. we can take you to. It doesn't matter. Brokenness is the key to God doing great things in the next season of your life. >> Brokenness is the key to God bringing blessings and victory and things. But he can't do anything if you're not willing to be broken. >> Say, "This is not what I came to hear on a Sunday night." Here's the spirit. spirit of of the world is it's powerful. I don't ever I don't ever want God to have to change my position, to have to change my perspective. That's what he has to do with the prodical son. The prodical son, he's he's he gets into a place where he's full of himself. Give me what's mine. It's all the attributes of somebody who's not very humble, not very broken, and he finds himself in a very broken place, right? And when he gets in a broken state, then he makes his way back home. And when he makes his way back home, he finds himself to a father that is running to him. Now, there's a Jewish tradition, and you may have heard me talk about this. I mentioned it a little bit at movement conference, but there's a Jewish trai tradition called the kaza. And the kaza is something where they would take and and I'll I'll read it to you. So, you know exactly how it's described. And there's a ceremony that was this Jew Jewish communal act used to publicly shame and ostracize a person who had uh brought disgrace on their family. Particularly, it says by squandering the inheritance among the Gentiles. If the offender attempted to return to the village, the community would gather the the village to the village's edge and they would take large clay pots and break them at their feet and declare to them, "You are cut off." So, get this. This is how the world works. The world works in a way that says, "Oh, you just need to shield yourself and you need to act like you got it all together. But when you are broken, we're going to come out and we're going to name you as broken. >> That's how the world works. Sin is but for a >> Oh, come have your pleasures and your moment and have you can be that person. You're you've got it all together and then all of a sudden when you're broken, they want to come and say, "No, no, no, no, no, no. You're a castaway. you don't come back in here because once you treat me wrong, they don't have mercy to give because they're not connected in covenant to anybody with mercy or grace. They don't have love to give because they don't know what true love is. And so they come before you and they run before you. So why is it that Jesus when he tells the parable to all these religious people who know the ceremonial law of the Jewish people that they would have ran to them and they would have busted the pots at their at their feet? Why is it that Jesus says he ran? because he outran the condemnation of the world that's coming to say, "Hey, that's who you are. You're a sinner. You're a messed up individual. You don't deserve the mercy of God." In fact, the devil's whispering that in some of your ears tonight so that he will keep you in your pew here in a few moments when God wants you to come down front and make a life-changing decision. And he's trying his best to get to you. And he's trying his best to throw a broken pot at your feet and tell you you're a good for-no loser. That's why your life's the way it is. You're never going to be anybody. But I'm here as a messenger of the Lord tonight to run to you and beat you, beat your adversary to tell you, hey, God's got a plan for you. And God, yes, guess what? They could call you broken, but there's a good there's some good news tonight. He's already broken. Let me give you the greatest revelation you'll ever hear. The devil's not always lying. >> Sometimes I believe him, Sydney, because he's right. I am a low down good for nothing. >> I don't deserve it. >> I don't deserve to be here. I don't deserve the father's run. I don't deserve his mercy. I don't deserve his goodness. I don't deserve his grace. And so when he comes and he wants to throw these clay pots at my feet, guess what? I can tell him, "Hey buddy, I've already had a clayp pot experience back in a pig pin." And it's because of brokenness that I'm standing here. It's because of brokenness that he's running off the front porch. Because if you'll break yourself in a pig pin somewhere, if you'll break yourself at an altar on a Sunday night, I promise you one thing, there's a God who'll come running to you. There's a God that's been waiting on you to make a decision to change your situation. I'm telling you, you're one broken prayer. You're one humble prayer from changing the season you've been sitting in. You're one humble prayer. I'm speaking to somebody in the Holy Ghost tonight. You're one prayer away from God changing your mindset. You say, "I've been depressed and I've been worried and I've been anxious and I've been fearful in the name of Jesus tonight. I don't know where you're at in this room and I don't know what somebody needs to lift your hands right now and receive the word of the Lord. The father is running to you. You've made your way into the house of God on a Sunday night and he wants to meet you right where you're at. You're not even going to make it to this altar tonight. He's ran to your pew and he's here to let you know, hey, if you'll be broken right now, I'll do Come on, young lady. Lift your hands. Come on, young lady. God sees you right now. I don't know where you're at, but God sees you, young lady. Lift your hands and God will touch you right now in the name of Jesus. Come on. Come on. Brokenness. I I I'll go ahead. I wasn't done, but I am done. The spirit wants me to be done. I'll be done. If you if if God's speaking to you, I challenge I dare you to come down to this altar and pray an honest, humble and broken prayer and see what God does in your mind in the name of Jesus. Come on. without any music, without any words, without any lyrics. Can you give God a Can you give God a broken prayer and say, "God, come on. Release that spirit. Release the Healing's going to take place in this room tonight. Healing. Come on, Dad. Don't miss this moment. Come on, Dad. Don't miss this moment. Come on, young man. God's got a calling for you. But there's no anointing without brokenness. There's no releasing the spirit without brokenness. >> Come on. That's it. Pour it out. Pour it out. Let that fragrance fill the room. Let it fill the room. Let it That's it, mama. That's it, Mom. That's it, young man. I'm asking every person right now, let God use you. Let God use you. God may use you to pour out on somebody else. Come on. In your in your current situation, release the spirit. If you feel led to pray with somebody, go pray with somebody in the name of Jesus. Come on. That's it. None of us have it all together. None of us have it all together. God, I need you. God, I love you. >> Come on, get rid of that judgmental spirit. You don't have it together either. Come on, get rid of that judgmental spirit. God can't work through it. God wants to work through brokenness. God wants to work through brokenness. That's it, church. I believe we could go a little bit further in the spirit tonight if everybody would buy in. Oh, go ahead and lift your voice to him. Go ahead, Dad, and lift up your voice to him. Ah, [screaming and groaning] touch us tonight. Ah, touch us. Come on. I'm I'm I'm sorry, but God's really speaking to somebody tonight. This is for everybody. It's not just for a few. God requires brokenness to be used. God requires it. If you don't want to be used, I understand. But God, oh God, requires Oh, God. Come on. I'm I'm begging you. Please. Nobody looking around. If you don't if you don't have any reason to to pray, pray with somebody. Pray with somebody in the name of Jesus. God, help us. Oh God, let healing virtue flow in this place tonight. Heal the mind of those trouble. Jesus. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Come on. That's it. Come on. There's going to be a demonstration. There's going to be a demonstration of the glory of God. The presence of God is here. The presence of God is here. yellow. Come on, every young person. Would you find somebody Come on, dads. Would you find another dad? Would you find moms, find somebody to pray with? >> God, let us not walk out of here the same way we walked in. God, we want to experience. Oh God, come on. That's it. Minister to somebody. Let that fragrance fill the room in the name. In the name of Jesus. Oh, God wants to minister to somebody tonight. We're not in a hurry. If you're part of the ministry team here, I wish you'd make your way through this congregation. Oh, God's healing minds tonight. I Hallelujah. Let's go. Hello. I want you to stand to your feet and every person would lift your hands to heaven. right now. >> And if you have prayed a broken prayer, if you have prayed a broken prayer, I wish you would lift your voice and watch what God is about to do in your heart and your mind right now. Would you lift your hands high as you can to heaven because if you poured it out, he's about to pour it out upon you right now in the name of Jesus. In the name of Jesus, Lord, renew and refresh, restore and revive, oh God. Lord, let your let your blessings be upon let your favor rest upon them. Lord, let us walk you in the name of Jesus. Yes, God. Yes, God. Oh god. Jesus. Jesus. to Jesus. Some of you may be waiting around to see what's going to happen, but Jesus is in the room. >> I just want to treat him the way he ought to be treated. I want to stand in awe of who he is. >> I want to be able to reverence and linger in his presence. I don't want to be in a hurry. I don't want to just be going through the motions. Come on, just a moment with your eyes closed. Could you just think on the goodness of Jesus? God, you've been so good to us. God, let us remember to linger in your presence. Oh God, I don't want to be aware of your presence. Jesus, we love you. >> Jesus, we love you. Jesus, we love you. If I could, with every head bowed and every eye closed, if I could obey the Lord for just a moment. There's a young lady in this room tonight that God wants to break the stronghold that's in your mind, but he's not going to break that stronghold until you're broken. So, one more time as a church family, would you lift your hands in this room as God gives opportunity? It's an honest prayer. God wants to transform you tonight. God wants to change you tonight. >> God wants to deliver you tonight. Come on, that's it. Come on, that's it. Come on, young lady. Let it come forth. >> In the name of Jesus right now. >> In the name of Jesus right now. Come on, church. One more time. Would you lift up your voice in praise and gratitude before we're dismissed tonight? >> Lord, I thank you. >> God, you've been so good to me. God, you've been so good to me. God, I don't deserve you. God, I don't deserve you. God, I don't deserve you. God, you've been so good to me. God, God, I bless you. God, I bless you tonight. Jesus, we love you. Jesus, we love you. I want us to always always be able to have prayer and it be prayer. Don't get me wrong, I'm not down in one thing to uplift another thing. This service is just important the service and everybody's running around, jumping, running up on the stage. It's a balance. But please let me just kind of lean in and and and speak to you for just one last moment tonight. If you find yourself feeling like moments like this are awkward and you just want us to move on, that's why I stand and pause. There's times where I like and and we've been talking a little bit about with the the music team. It's like maybe we should just stop and not go to the next song for a few moments to see if everybody can just worship without see if we can pray without it being pushed. There's one thing I do know. a broken and a contrite heart. He can't refuse these moments where I I believe if the earth is his foottool, I believe the weight of his glory gets a little heavy when a group of people gather around the altar >> and are broken. And so I encourage you, I encourage you to apply the simplicity of the scripture to your life. Find moments in the day where you can stand still and acknowledge who he is, but also be honest with who you are. We often times stand still and we acknowledge him but acknowledge and be honest with who we are, where we're at because the those moments bring tears. Those moments bring honesty and most of all I believe they lead us to brokenness which leads us to that next stage and that next season of life that I believe God wants for each and every one of us individually and corporately. So, one more time, would you lift your hands? Would you receive the word of the Lord tonight before we're dismissed? Lord, we thank you for what you've done today all day long. I thank you for what you've done at all of our campuses. I pray that your word would go with us, that it would be a lamp unto our feet and a light into our path. Lord, I pray, God, that you would use these mighty people, God, to reach our city, God, to continue to change our world. Lord, you know what each and every one of them will
