Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

There's bread in your boat: consider the loaves

  • He reads the feeding of the five thousand from the five loaves and two fishes: Jesus blesses, breaks and multiplies the lad-sized lunch, the multitude eats and is filled, and twelve baskets of fragments are taken up.
  • Jesus then comes to the disciples walking on the sea in the storm, and they are amazed beyond measure because they considered not the miracle of the loaves - their heart was hardened.
  • The leftovers of yesterday's miracle were most likely in the boat with them: everything you need in the storm is right there in what God has already done.
  • We keep record of what we lost and what went wrong, but not of what God has done; he asks whether, in the midst of the storm, we have forgotten what is in the boat.

Scriptures: Mark 6:38-52

Seven loaves, seven baskets - and the one-loaf generation

  • He walks the second feeding: seven loaves, a multitude of four thousand who had followed Jesus three days, and seven baskets of broken meat left over.
  • It is not the size of the crowd that determines the move of God, but how hungry the people are; he that hungers and thirsts after righteousness shall be filled.
  • Jesus warns of the leaven of the Pharisees and of Herod, then rebukes the disciples for crossing with one loaf: having eyes, they see not; having ears, they hear not; they do not remember the twelve baskets and the seven.
  • One-loaf living is forgetful and unthankful: to whom much is given, much is required, and a believer raised in the house of God should be carrying a basket - something to give, a Bible study taught, a prayer life - not one loaf barely feeding himself.

Scriptures: Mark 8:1-21

The Scriptures are bread that keeps sustaining

  • From a child Timothy had known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
  • All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable - like the bread in the boat, every time you go back to it there is something there to sustain you.

Scriptures: 2 Timothy 3:15-16

Pentecost: the waving of the bread

  • He sets the feast in Moses coming down from the mountain in Exodus 32 with the two tablets, fifty days after Passover, when the two loaves were waved as an offering before the Lord.
  • When the day of Pentecost was fully come they were all in one accord in one place; suddenly the sound came, cloven tongues like as of fire sat upon each of them, and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost.
  • Acts 2 ends as it begins - continuing daily in one accord, breaking bread from house to house, telling what God had done for them so others could believe he could do it for them.

Scriptures: Exodus 32; Acts 2:1-4

The close: take the basket home

  • He invites anyone who needs a miracle to lift their hands: the gift of faith and the gift of healing are in the room, and God wants to put something in your life that will sustain you through any storm.
  • He charges the young people not to settle for one loaf or a little patty-cake prayer, and not to leave the bread on the boat: take a basket home and it will sustain you until Wednesday.
  • He closes praying over the people - silver and gold have we none, but broken bread to give out in the name of Jesus.

gonna keep this what we would call according to scripture party going tonight huh you all right with that i'll take you to mark chapter 6 and verse number 38 give honor to pastor sister carpenter pastor sister erickson it's always an honor to stand before the greatest church in all the world and i give you honor tonight it's good to have turning point here at turning point turn point i don't hope i'm not saying it wrong but pastor errata it's great to have you guys we're so thankful we're going to have a great time of fellowship after service and thank you for being with us tonight you i know you were looking forward to hearing pastor preach and i'm sorry familiar story mark chapter 6 and verse number 38 feeding of the five thousand only miracle recorded in all four gospels we could read it at any of the four but we choose mark chapter six tonight jesus seeks to separate himself from the crowd but they follow after him and he has compassion on him like sheep without a shepherd the scripture says listen listen to this in mark chapter 6 and verse number 38 he said unto them how many loaves have ye go and see and he when they knew they have they said they had five and five loaves and two fishes and he commanded them to make everyone sit down in companies in the green grass and they sat down in ranks by hundreds and fifties and when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes he looked up into heaven and he blessed and he break the loaves and he gave them to his disciples to set before them and the two fishes divided among them all and they did all eat and were filled and they took up 12 baskets full of fragments of the fishes and they did eat of the loaves for about 5 000 men and straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the boat get into the ship and to go to the other side before under meseda while he sent the people away and when he had sent them away he departed to the mountain to pray and when he was even come to the ship it was in the midst of the sea and he had come along the land and he saw them toiling and rowing and the wind was contrary to them and about the fourth watch of the night he came unto them walking upon the sea and he would have passed them by but they saw him walking upon supposed him to be a spirit and cried out to him you know the story for they all saw him and were troubled and immediately he talked with them and said unto them be of good cheer it is i be not free and he went up into them and the ship and the wind ceased and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure and wondered for they considered not the miracles of the loaves for their heart was hardened i want to preach to you for just a few minutes and again we can just keep this going i'm going to preach to you about faith and we'll be in the same vein we could have just let brother selena just keep going this this afternoon and what a wonderful job that he did but let's preach on this topic for just a few minutes this evening there's bread in your boat there's bread in your boat there's bread in your boat could you let lay your bibles down lift your hands to heaven let's ask the lord to speak to us tonight god i love you i thank you so much for your word i pray that your word tonight would not just be revelatory but be relevant god to every soul every creature every man woman boy and girl in this place tonight god i ask that your power your anointing would break the yoke god that you would god cause a victory god calls god god a move of your spirit to come down in this place in just a moment god where anyone who chooses to hunger and thirst after you will be changed in this place tonight we give you praise and glory and honor in jesus name if you want to hear the word of the lord tonight would just shout amen amen you can be seated jesus feeds the five thousands five thousand and sends them home he is teaching the disciples are aware that jesus is here teaching them and he said we've been here a while we're in a desert place we have nothing to eat these people are tired we need to send them away they don't have anything to eat and it appears at the moment of this story that jesus is not quite done teaching he says well we need to feed them then the disciples we're just going to run down to mcdonald's and get them something to eat we don't have anything here we can't really order pizza you know uh we he says after they mentioned they said we well we need a hundred pennies worth of bread to feed a a group this large and he sits down he tells them he says do we have anything one of the disciples brings the lads lunch and as you just heard in the text jesus blesses it and he breaks it and he sits them down in groups and he takes this small lunch bless it broke it and multiplied it an amazing miracle he did not have to perform he could have sent him home they had just been with him just a little while but he had spoken spoke and it was hot and they were tired he said we've got to feed these people if you're going to keep talking that's probably what some of you are thinking tonight you're going to have to feed me if you're going to keep talking right huh but this amazing miracle that we see recorded in all four gospels where he could have just simply sent him on he didn't have to do anything else he didn't have he he didn't have to continue his message he simply here proved it at the end all he did was feed the five thousand he said see you i don't have nothing else to say i just did that that was just for you coming and listening so he does this amazing miracle simply wanted to bless them let them see the goodness of god they depart jesus goes on a cross the disciples board a boat to cross over to the other side of the sea and they encounter a storm jesus comes walking on the water to them again why because he can huh because he can and he's always on top of whatever's troubling you the storm is simply just a stepping stone for what he wants to show you and what he what he is and who he is and what he can do and it's probably easier for jesus to walk on waves than a calm sea anyway let's say it's probably something like an elliptical you know huh it's kind of i could just see it picture in my mind i got a weird mind but he just kind of you know comes riding in on a wave pops up what up it's probably a little little more a little a little easier to come in on the storm than it was in the calm and that makes sense right jesus normally shows up in our lives when things are a little bit rocky and he huh the storm he says don't be afraid and i can just see this i've read every commentary i owned i could just see this jesus comes in on the wave of the storm and they're all rowing got fear in their eyes scared to death jesus says why in the world are you scared have you not considered the loaves simple message tonight have you not considered what's in the boat commentaries say that most likely all the leftovers were in the boat all the fragments so i've come to ask somebody tonight a simple question in the midst of your storm have you forgotten what god's already done if there's anything that i feel like we do not do well that is keep record of what god's done we'll keep record of what we've lost we'll keep record of what's going wrong we'll keep record of what everybody's done to us that's wrong but do we keep record of what's in the boat do we keep a record of what he's already done this is a unique story i love how you can you can you can follow it through all through gospels and just kind of see each one of them's take on it you know most of them they have some kind of background in fishing if you actually read uh it's it's very interesting fishermen say that one of the best thing pastor one of the best things to eat when you're seasick is dry bread so it just all things make sense here jesus is like hey everything you need is right there in yesterday's miracle everything you need is right there we keep record of everything else but when i look back over my life there's a reason that those songs begin to churn heaven's tearing open because i went down to a watery grave there's a reason that there's some people that step out that know that i'm keeping record of what god's done in my life that i used to be this and i used to be that but god brought me out of something therefore i've got a i've got something in my life i've got something in my boat to praise him for and i know we've already had uh quite the church service so maybe i would this evening try my best to get those of you that haven't participated to participate tonight here's the thing you've got your own book of miracles don't be fearful if i never read that he pulled daniel out of the lion's den and shut the mouth of the lions if i never read that goliath's head came off if i never read any of the miracle signs and wonders i've got a book of my own if i never read anything if i didn't have this to go on i steal tonight ought to lift up hands i ought to clap my hands ought to lift my voice because god's done something in my life he's turned my life around he's done enough for me that i don't even have to know your story there's bread in the boat i don't know about you but i wonder if somebody praise him for just a moment because god's done a miracle yesterday well but i need something today well god's got something in your vote to praise him for right now turn the page mark 6 goes to mark 8. most people that read their bible get these two stories sometimes confused but matthew and mark are the only ones who record mark 8 and 1 in those days the multitude being very great having nothing to eat jesus calls his disciples unto him saith unto him i have compassion on this multitude it's almost like you're reading the same story because they've now been with me however three days everybody say three days the other multitude had just been with them part of a day he said they've been with me three days they have nothing to eat and if i send them away fasting to their houses they will faint by the way for divers of them came from far so the other miracle he didn't have to perform this miracle he has a need because these people have been following him for three days so and his disciples they said for from whence can man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness and he asked him how many loaves have you they said seven and he commanded the people to sit down on the ground literally it's like deja vu and he took the seven loaves and he gave thanks and he'd break it and he gave him disciples he set before them and they did set before the people and they had few small fish and they blessed and commanded to set them also before them so they did eat and were filled and they took up the broken meat that was left seven baskets now this gets really interesting jesus has a reason to perform this miracle miracle these people had been with him they needed something to eat they couldn't return home it was too far so he finds seven loaves of bread the 4 000 has more loaves and less people huh more loaves less people but less leftovers seven baskets of people seven baskets left over we have seven loaves of bread this gets interesting to me because we have more people more bread but less people but less left over which means we had hungrier people smaller number but greater in hunger they had been following jesus for longer though because when you've been following him for longer you have a greater hunger for him but this teaches us something that we have to take note of here it's not the amount of people it's not the size of the church that determines the move of god and the miracles of god it's just how hungry are you god is here for hungry people he that hungers and thirsts after righteousness they shall be filled ah we can have good church every sunday if everybody comes hungry hungry somebody say hungry you can have a move of god at a mega church or a mission work it don't matter somebody's just got to be hungry god is not just about numbers he's about the number that a hunger hungry to thirst after him does anyone tonight come hungry for a little bit more of god now i'm not talking about coming just to hang out check off the attendance list i'm talking about coming to get something that's going to change you huh let's keep reading verse number nine and when they had eaten they were about 4 000 and he sent them away because when he feeds them he sends them on their way and straightway he entered into a ship here we go again this time jesus is like i'm going to help you out instead of going before you i'm going to get in the boat with you huh and he came to the parts of down manila or whatever that says and the pharisees came forth and began to question with him seeking of him the sign from heaven tempting him and he called sighed deeply in his spirit and saith what doth this gender why does this generation seek after a sign young people verily i say unto you there shall no sign be given unto this generation and he left them entering to the ship again he departed on the other side here we go again verse 14 now the disciples had forgotten to take bread neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf everybody said one loaf and he charged them saying take heed beware the leaven of the pharisees and the leaven of herod and they reasoned among themselves saying is it is it because we have no bread well what's the deal with jesus and us being on a boat and this bread thing huh why is it that we he keeps performing a miracle and he keeps giving us these leftovers and there's abundant and we're supposed to take it with us and when jesus knew it he said to them why reason you because you have no bread perceive ye not yet neither understand have your same thing but he says it over again he says have you your heart yet hardened having eyes see he not and having ears hear ye not and do you not remember two chapters ago huh when i broke the five loaves among 5 000 how many basket full of fragments did you take up because god's keeping record they say unto him 12. verse 20 and when he said there's seven among four thousand how many baskets full to the fragments did you take them and he said seven and he said unto them what is it you don't really understand how many times i got to do this before you pick up what i'm putting down huh before you realize that i'm leaving a leftover for you to live on why have you forgotten the bread why can you not you're telling me you showed up i just fed 4 000 people left you with seven baskets you show up with one loaf one loaf that's all you got you come all the way across here and you left it on the boat i see people's lives like this god's done all this and you just got one loaf you heard the same message that i did and you just got one loaf you grew up in this thing and you just got one low you came to church on sunday morning and you're worried about lunch afterwards you're not young people i'm telling you not you you can't if you can't serve god in a youth group like this if you can't serve a god in a youth group like we've got you god forbid you be in a church like this or a church like turn point and you just you just go home with one loaf huh there's whole mission kids there's kids on foreign fields i could understand if they just got one loaf but i i there ain't no excuses for a young person here in the house of god tonight in the midst of a christian school walking around with one loaf to whom much is given much is required you got to use what he's putting down there's bread in the boat oh i wish somebody praised god for what he's done oh have you forgotten what he's done years ago you might not be very old but he's brought you out of a lot he's kept you from a lot it don't matter how old you are i feel the presence of the lord in this place here's the thing though that don't matter because they're in his presence and he's counting the list basket basket why why don't why don't you get it huh they're standing in the presence of jesus christ the word made flesh and they still can't see he reminds them of what they should have had with them and you you're telling me i leave the whole basket with you and you show up with a happy meal what are you thinking what is it that you don't understand you've got one loaf and you should have a basket you've been serving god for how long and you've just got one loaf you grew up in church and you just have one loaf you're how old and you haven't taught a bible study you're how old and you're not in the choir you're how old and you're not you don't have a prayer life you just got one low what do you not understand i've put you in a home i've given you parents that love you i'll put you in a i don't know what else to do i you you've got to see that as gifted you are as anointed you are the people of the name but you just got one loaf count your blessings you can find one no no you can find way more than one if you just look back and did a recount of everything that god has done in your life you could walk around and actually have something to give you could walk around and actually have a basketball and say hey it's it's not all about me it's about serving somebody but when you got one loaf all you're looking is is just to feed yourself huh i can't teach a bible study i just got one low this is andrew i'm sorry i i wish i could pray for you but this is just to get me through the day i should have a basket full you you not know what the lord spoke to me in prayer yesterday he said if people had a basket they wouldn't be depressed because you can look at one loaf and you can have you can have a lot of strongholds on that mind because you can't you can't figure out do i need to hold on to this do i need to do i need to complain about this do i need to look like my am i a victim because of this because i don't have the whole no you don't have the whole basket because you didn't take it with you people that have a basket people that are sharing the love of god are not depressed it don't matter if you're in the middle of a storm it don't matter how bad things look if you're sharing the gospel of jesus christ and you're telling your story of just how good god's been to you it's no way you can there's no way i don't know one depressed person that's saying oh god brought me out of the muck and the mire he set my feet on us if you'd focus on the bread and the boat you wouldn't be having to deal with all them i'm convinced that people that's got a basket don't worry you don't have to worry about the leaven of the pharisees i guarantee you had they showed up with a basket jesus wouldn't have had to teach them yes right oh well they know they learned they didn't learn with the 5 000 but they learned with the 4 000. they showed up but what's he got to do is just say hey hey uh uh what is it that you don't get because if you don't stay full of me you'll start nibbling on other things and that 11 that leaven of the pharisee that 11 of the sadducees all of a sudden you'll be drawn away by your own lusts and entice but those that have a basket i don't need what you got i'm sorry i know i know you're going to listen to that kind of music but i'm going to ride with somebody else i know you're going to watch those certain things but i'm gonna go on home and and just i got a basket full here huh but it's those it's those people it's those kids that ain't got nothing but facebook friends nothing but fake friends walking around that one loaf lifestyle huh one loaf you can be seated i'm sorry i'm having too much fun i've got enough left over to praise him about if he don't do another miracle he said if you just stir up the gift that's already in you if you just go back to the boat and get the basket i don't have to do nothing today and i know some of you i want you to pray i want you to get in the presence of god but you take a basket home it sustained you till wednesday you take a basket home it'll sustain you it'll keep you remember your redemption there is bread in the boat you can live on what's left don't leave the bread on the boat show up with one loaf it can't be a one loaf generation young people entitled unthankful forgetful of the faithfulness of god god forbid that if it starts anywhere it's a platform of unthankfulness that'll take you to the place of one loaf before you know it you'll find yourself and you've taken that one loaf and you've tried to live from strong tower to strong tower and that loaf just gets smaller and smaller and before you know it you're walking around and just you have no relationship with god we cannot be a generation we cannot be a generation of one loaf i i can see it because it's it's often times you know we we we go out we'll go out to eat sometimes and i've been uh i've been out it's not it's don't happen very often when we were coaching we would take the team out afterward to eat that's not a good depiction because those boys on the basketball team they'll eat everything but the tray that you put the food on that they they they're looking through the trash can trying to find some some more food to eat they just eat any and everything you have leftovers they're going to eat everything but i've been to places sometimes you'll just see i i eat with my dad and growing up my dad it didn't matter how much or how little the food was i've watched him even at places pastor where i know he didn't like the food but he was taught by a previous generation to clean his plate i'm going to eat every bit of it he's going he's going to take whatever's left he's going i mean his plate's cleaner than it was when they brought it to it and i see generations where even if you pack it up there's been times where i leave a restaurant and this generator there'll be to-go boxes just sitting on the table half-eaten steak 72 can't even go to taco bell without it costing 20 now right huh it's just all these leftovers you don't it's it's it breeds it's i i i'm afraid that spiritually if we're not careful we'll we'll leave stuff on the table on sunday morning and on sunday night that there's things that god has for us that we don't take full advantage of because we're not willing to get out and celebrate what god's already done well god's not done really anything for me in the past few weeks and i really hadn't found uh much i haven't gotten much out of church in the past few weeks well could could you just praise him for what he brought you out of could you praise him for the miracle he's already done huh i i know i know it's i know it's i know it's simple tonight but god's looking at what you have left to determine whether or not he can give you more have you left what he gave you to sustain you and been unthankful for it he's not going to do more for you huh you understand that say well god i want you to bless me god i want you to touch me he's saying there's still leftovers from the last miracle i did and i'm not sure why you're fearful and i'm not sure why you're looking around or why you got your hands out there should be some things in your hands if you would just go pick up the bread that's in the boat he refers to it all throughout scripture he says it's an unprofitable profitable servant there's nothing he's not going to find any profit out of it there's not going to be anything profitable come from it's not going to be any excess of their life because they won't pick up what i have left for them it's unprofitable don't be a person who's always walking around broke spiritually keep a record of the goodness of god what does jesus we see here he begins to teach he you left the boat and he begins to teach he says beware of those who you hang out with beware of those if you forget your bread they're going to have something to give you if you you show up without a lunch the devil's gonna have something to feed you but he said i i really need to you to make sure that you understand this teaching second timothy 3 15. we're going to get back to that shouting here in a moment sister erickson if we can end with that song that we sung just a few minutes ago ii timothy 3 chapter 3 and verse number 15. and that from a child thou has known the holy scriptures from a child you've known the holy scriptures which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in christ jesus all scripture everybody say all scripture is given by inspiration of god it is that word profitable there means excess the scripture is just like the bread and the boat every time you go to it there's something to sustain you there's something to keep you there's something that you can go to it's profitable it's abundant it's all you need so i i i began to try to try to figure out exactly what the lord was telling me and i knew that he wanted me to come here and i'm not really sure why he wanted me to come here but this is how i feel led to end tonight it was moses who came down from the mountain in exodus chapter 32. it was the feast of chaviot also known as the feast of unleavened bread the feast day they would come out like this right here and they would give a wave offering unto the lord they would take these two loaves of bread that they had made and they would give a wave offering unto the lord the reason they did this is moses came down from the mountain on that day 50 days after passover that feast day he comes down to the mountain with the two tablets of stone so they take those two pieces of bread just as moses would have come down with the two tablets he comes down and they they do a wave offering every fifth every time the passover 50 days the feast of chaviot the feast of unleavened bread and it was a party the bread come flinging out and they had a time singing dancing jumping shouting you name it it was happening no no we know the feast of chaviot or the feast of unleavened bread as the day of pentecost 50 days after passover he says when the day of pentecost was fully come it's still about the waving of the bread because god is about to put enough bread in your boat to sustain you through any storm god is about to put something in your life that is going to take you and sustain you no matter what the situation looks like no matter how bad it seems acts chapter 2 and verse number 1 says when the day of pentecost was fully come they were all in one accord in one place and suddenly there came a sound that had never come during the waving of the bread before suddenly there came a fire from heaven that set upon each of them and they were all filled with the holy ghost it appeared unto them clothing tongues like as a fire and it's set up on them all go ahead stand your feet i'm done i want you i want you to see this with me this waving of the bread huh there's so many correlations of the old testament playing out when jesus takes those loaves and he breaks them but jesus takes those loaves and and he's feeding the five thousand he's adding to the church here but i want to take note take note of this this evening acts 2 begins with the waving of the bread acts 2 ends and they continue daily in one accord just like they started in the temple in the breaking of bread they said they went from house to house he's been good to me he went from house to house telling hey he can bring you out just like he brought me out pastor he hey we broke bread he can do it for me because he did it for you and from house to house they went breaking bread and saying hey if he did it for me he did it for paul and silas he did it for them he can do it for you and they went breaking bread they went to sling and bread and it was a party because of why not because of anything god had done but what he had previously done at that moment he wasn't working a miracle but he had just poured out his presence and we went from waving bread huh i've got bread in my boat and i can break this bread and live off today and tomorrow and the next day and the next day and the next day based upon what god's doing right now because there's bread in the boat i want to ask you tonight is there anybody in this place needs a miracle huh i feel so strong in the holy coast right now how would you lift your hands for a moment the gift of faith is in this room right now come on come on he wants to do something to sustain you he wants to do so no i don't feel nothing oh we'll praise him for what he did years ago brother steph i don't know why uh i don't know why and i have prayed that god would tell me why sister steph why the only thing i can tell you is there's bread in the boat there's a miracle that he's done somewhere in your past that you can hold on to right now and you can wave it when i don't have an answer but i don't know what i wish somebody would i know you're in the midst of a storm but there's bread in the boat there's bread in the boat i don't know why your son's not in church i don't know why your daughter's heard i'm coming to break bread with you tonight i wonder if
