Is Jesus God, or the Son of God — or both?

The question usually assumes the two titles compete — that if Jesus is the Son of God, He cannot also be God, and if He is God, "Son" must be a lesser rank. The Bible's own answer is that both are true at once, because "Son of God" names how the one God came to us, not a second god beside Him. The church's confession on this site is the Shema first: there is one God, undivided. That one God, in the words of the Articles of Faith carried on the Doctrine page, "has revealed Himself as Father, through His Son, in redemption; and as the Holy Spirit, by emanation." Jesus is that revelation in person — the one God manifest in the flesh, born into a true human life, which is why Scripture calls Him Son; and the fullness that dwells in Him is nothing less than God Himself, which is why Scripture also calls Him God.

"For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily."

— Colossians 2:9 (KJV)

"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."

— Isaiah 9:6 (KJV)

So "both" is not a compromise between two verses; it is what the verses say together. Jesus Himself joined them: "I and my Father are one" (John 10:30). The Son is not a junior partner in a committee of gods; He is the one God of Israel, come in flesh to redeem — and the fulness of the Godhead dwells in Him bodily, not a third of it.
