Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
Jochebed, the Trusty Mother
- Speaking on Mother's Day, she takes up Jochebed, the mother of Moses, whom she calls "the trusty mother" — a woman who trusted God with her children.
- Jochebed was the mother of three well-known figures in the Bible: Moses, the deliverer of Israel; Aaron, the first high priest of Israel; and Miriam, a prophetess.
- Although Jochebed is not named in the Exodus 2 account of Moses' birth, she is named in the genealogies in Exodus 6:20 and Numbers 26:59.
Scriptures: Exodus 2:1-10; Exodus 6:20; Numbers 26:59
Hiding Moses and Letting Him Go
- Her name means honor or glory of God, and she stands as an example of faith — of learning to trust God with our children, which she admits is not always easy.
- Moses was born while the Israelites were slaves in Egypt, after Pharaoh ordered that every Hebrew son be cast into the river.
- Jochebed hid Moses for three months; when she could hide him no longer, she exercised faith by giving her child over to the Lord, laying him in an ark of bulrushes by the river's brink while his sister Miriam watched from a distance to see what would happen to him.
Scriptures: Exodus 1:22
God Gives Him Right Back
- Pharaoh's daughter came down to the river, found the basket, and had compassion on the crying baby; she named him Moses, because she drew him out of the water.
- God worked through the women: the midwives who spared the Hebrew babies, Jochebed who hid Moses for three months, Miriam who watched over the basket, and Pharaoh's own daughter who had compassion on him.
- Miriam stepped forward and offered to call a Hebrew nurse, and Pharaoh's daughter even paid Jochebed to care for her own son — giving the mother time to teach him about faith in God before he was older, was given back, and became Pharaoh's daughter's son.
Scriptures: Exodus 2:7-8
Trust God With Your Children
- Moses' preservation was part of God's plan to rescue Israel from slavery, and God had a special purpose for him — but mothers today are told God has a special purpose for their child also.
- Psalm 139 says God created each child in the womb, fearfully and wonderfully made, with all the days ordained for the child written in God's book before one of them came to be.
- Motherhood is called the highest and noblest of all callings, and the little lives within a mother's influence will reflect her virtue and character; the closing appeal is to learn from Jochebed's example and ask God to make you a trusting mother.
Scriptures: Psalms 139:13-16

first thing i want to wish all the mothers a happy mother's day you are a blessing to all of us i'm speaking today about jochebed the mother of moses you can find the story of moses in exodus 2 1 through 10. today we are looking at jock a bed i call her the trusty mother she was a very trusting woman she was the mother of three famous people in the bible she was the mother of moses the deliverer of israel she was the mother of aaron the first high priest of israel and she was the mother of miriam a prophetess poet and singer in israel i remember miriam's name when they were crossing the red sea and she had a tambourine and she was dancing around that was moses sister and although jochebed is not named in exodus 2 1 and 10 she is named in geologies in exodus 6 20 and numbers 26 59.
jacobed certainly honored god with her life and her faith she is a wonderful example of faith in god and learning to trust god with our children it's not always so easy for us to trust god with our children so this is for a jock of bed story is so important for us to learn she trusted god with her son moses and we need to learn to trust god with our children she had the attributes of a good mother her name means honor or glory of god jochebed became pregnant with moses during a very difficult time the israelites were slaves in egypt at the time and pharaoh had told the hebrew midwives to kill any of the hebrew boys as they were being delivered now this was the time moses was born when the midwives refused and let them lived pharaoh issued a new order in exodus 122 and pharaoh charged all his people saying every son that is born you shall cast into the river and every daughter you shall save alive and after moses was born jochebed hid moses for three months the bible tells us that moses was a goodly child but when she couldn't hide him any longer jocobet exercised faith by giving her child over to the lord can you imagine giving a three-month-old baby over to somebody else even the lord at the time when things were so bad when you've nursed that baby you've held that baby in your arms and rocked it at night to keep it quiet so nobody would hear it and to let that baby know go and not even know what's going to really happen to that baby but you see jockey bed had done all that she could do and now she needed to trust god by giving her child to the lord she put him in a basket the bible called it ark of bulrushes and dubbed it with slime and pitch for protection and laid it in the flags by the nile river's brink and moses older sister miriam stood at a distance to see what would happen to him then pharaoh's daughter came out of the palace she went down to the nile to bathe and she saw the basket and sent her slave girl to get it and when the baby cries she had compassion she said this is one of the hebrew children and she called his name moses and she said because i drew him out of the water moses means drawn out she drew him out of the water exodus 2 7-8 then said his sister to pharaoh's daughter shall i go and call to thee a nurse of the hebrew women that she may nurse the child for thee and pharaoh's daughter said to her go and the maid went and called the child's mother now i want you to notice the irony here favor ordered all the male hebrew babies killed he's always afraid somebody was going to get his kingdom as if it were only the men dangerous to the kingdom but look how god worked through the women god worked first of all through the midwives who spared the hebrew babies then god broke through jochebed for three months she hid moses they worked through miriam the sister who watched over moses in the basket and now god works through pharaoh's own daughter who comes along finds the baby in the basket and has compassion on him but there's more it even gets better jock abed gives her baby to the lord and god gives him right back can you believe a godly moment like that she gives him right back thor does pharaoh's own daughter needs someone to nurse the child quick thinking marry him she steps up and says i know the right person god moments folks when we need god he's there he's there he's there and we need to trust him for our children just like joshua trusted so much for moses pharaoh's own daughter even pays jock a bed to take care of moses for her the mother has him long enough to teach him about faith in god about god's people and god's plan and different things about the lord only god could work out all these details in such a marvelous way then when moses was older jochebed gave him back to pharaoh's daughter and he became her son and she educated him this was all part of god's plan to rescue the people of israel from slavery and egypt this was a special purpose that god had for moses but i want to tell all you mothers today god has a special purpose for your child also in psalms 139 13-16 god tells us he created your child in the womb your child is fearfully and wonderfully made all the days ordained for your child were written in god's book before one of them came to even be with you it takes faith to see that god has entrusted to mothers the most precious treasures of his creation motherhood is the highest and noblest of all callings the little lives within the sphere of your influence will reflect your virtue and your character learn from jochebed's example ask god to make you a trusting mother
