Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

A simple text: don't bind the strongman

  • He reads his text, Mark 3:27: no man can enter a strong man's house and spoil his goods unless he first binds the strong man — and derives his title from it: don't bind the strongman.
  • He adds an extra verse, Proverbs 24:5: a wise man is strong, and a man of knowledge increases in strength.
  • Whoever seeks spiritual strength or spiritual wisdom tonight is seeking to become a biblical strongman.
  • The enemy is out to bind the strongman in every one of us, at any cost, in order to destroy our families, our church, our fathers, our mothers, and our children.

Scriptures: Mark 3:27; Proverbs 24:5

The world's strongest man

  • He loves competition, especially the World's Strongest Man, and names Hafthor Bjornsson, Brian Shaw, and Eddie Hall with their heights and weights.
  • The events that impress him: the Atlas stones lifted onto pedestals, the vehicle pull — trains, boxcars, even a Boeing 737 moved a hundred feet — and the deadlift of around 1,100 pounds.
  • The point of the illustration: in order to spoil the goods of the house, you must first eliminate the strongman.

Safety protocols: the father slept by the door

  • The Bible had safety protocols like ours today: Abraham armed his servants against danger; Rahab's house in Jericho's wall was searched first because spies were hidden there; Nehemiah kept Jerusalem's gates shut from dusk to dawn so no one could spy out the rebuilding.
  • Jerusalem's small homes had no locks or deadbolts — sometimes only a tapestry over the door — so the family slept in order from the youngest child at the farthest end, then the older children, then the wife, with the father nearest the door.
  • The father slept by the door so a thief in the night would meet the strongman first; he put himself closest to the danger to protect his family and his goods.
  • Sometimes we need to be safe rather than sorry: having the liberty to do something does not make it expedient.

What the strongman is

  • The enemy roams like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour; he wants not only to kill and steal but to destroy whatever is good in your life by binding the strongman.
  • The strongman can be the man in the home, the woman in the home, or the child in the home — and it is also a strong prayer life, faith in God, strong morals, strong giving, strong faithfulness, and strong standards of living.
  • For some, faithfulness may be all they have left; do not give it up, because if the enemy takes the one thing you are strong in, he can spoil your goods.
  • Some are just a few tithes away from a financial blessing, a few services away from a miracle, a few days away from a promotion — and all the enemy wants to do is bind the strongman.
  • The enemy does not care if you have given up everything else; if one thing still tethers you to the house of God — a ministry, an instrument, singing, greeting — he will drive a wedge to sever that one thing.

Steal, kill, destroy: why he won't stop

  • Someone on a Pentecostal pew might be one service, one sermon, one song, one verse, or one altar call away from God changing their life — that is why the enemy keeps attacking even those who look finished.
  • The enemy comes to steal, then to kill, then to destroy, because if any part of you is left inside a dead miracle, it might be resurrected; he wants it eradicated so you never darken the doors of a Pentecostal church again.

Resistance is how we get stronger

  • We have to be wise and prudent: to gain strength we must be wise, and it is resistance that makes us stronger — setbacks are an opportunity to grow.
  • Things go well and then a job is lost, an engine goes out, the air conditioner fails just as the bills get caught up — the enemy is simply trying to bind the strongman.
  • Do not let a cross word, being passed over, or not being liked bind you; he is here for Jesus and for the people in his own house, not for anyone else.
  • Guard against a root of bitterness: the people who can hurt us most are previous leaders, and bitterness toward them can create an atmosphere so toxic that no future leader can survive in it.

Samson kept one thing

  • This is not a license to do whatever you want: if you are hanging on by a thread, don't cut it and don't let anyone else cut it — strengthen the one thing, add to it, and get more than one tether to the church.
  • Samson was instructed in three things: drink nothing strong, touch nothing dead, and don't cut his hair. He broke two of them — he drank wine and he touched the dead lion to get the honey — yet he did not lose his strength, because God gives a span of grace.
  • The one thing Samson refused to give up was his hair; he lied to Delilah again and again rather than reveal the secret of his strength.
  • The righteous man falls seven times, and God does not strike you down for one mistake or two — if your faith and faithfulness stay strong, God can still turn things around; just don't bind the strongman.

Goodness and mercy follow the unbound

  • It was only when Samson's hair was cut that he lost his strength; he got up as at other times, not knowing the umbrella of protection was gone.
  • Without the strongman, we go about our day as before but no longer under the protection of the Holy Ghost or the blessing that follows us.
  • In his own commentary — not Matthew Henry's, not Nelson's — goodness and mercy are two angels: wherever he goes good things will happen, and where he makes a mistake mercy steps in to cover him.
  • He wants to leave tonight with those two angels and with the protection of the Holy Ghost, not unprotected because the strongman was bound.

Protected on the road: testimony and closing prayer

  • This past Sunday, driving his dad's freshly detailed 4Runner in a monsoon rain on Highway 31, the car fishtailed three times and slid through a yard to a stop across the street — and took no damage at all; he went back the next day to speak to the homeowner, but the house was empty.
  • Whatever is holding you and connecting you to this body of Christ — even if it is one thing — do not allow the enemy to bind it.
  • He closes in prayer for everyone present and for the miracle in the making in each life, and prays for his pastor's safe travel to Florida and back, then dismisses the congregation in Jesus' name.

Scripture index: Mark 3:27; Proverbs 24:5.

I have a very simple text tonight brother Noah you with us praise the Lord we have a very simple text tonight and it's found of course in mark chapter 3 and verse 27 it's been a while since I've been up here so I am I'm a nervous wreck and so I believe God is gonna give me the courage and to get through this if anything it'll be short and that right Melissa and I've got strict instructions so I waited for seven minutes that I don't count but anyways I've got a very simple message tonight and I believe that God is going to speak and he's got a very powerful word and and for some reason I believe that this is for somebody I just couldn't shake it so I believe this is for somebody mark chapter 3 and verse 27 if you're there say Amen awesome the Bible says no man can enter into a strong Mans house and spoil his Goods except he will first bind the strong man and then he will spoil his house I would derive my text from this verse and it's just simple don't bind the strongman brother Chris don't bind the strongman this is an extra verse since it's Kerry you don't have to throw this up but it's found in proverbs twenty four and five the Bible says a wise man is strong yay a man of knowledge increases in strength so if you are spiritual tonight if you seek spiritual strength or spiritual wisdom you are seeking to become a biblical strongman and tonight I want to teach you if I may some very simple rules and regulations that the enemy is out there to destroy and to bind the strongman and every one of us he is trying to hurt and destroy our families he is trying to destroy our church he's trying to destroy our fathers he's trying to destroy our mothers and he's trying to destroy our children by any means necessary so if he can try to bind the strongman he will do so brother lockhart at any cost amen

hallelujah I don't know about you but I love competition I love any type of competition and but one of my favorites and maybe some of you don't enjoy it as much as I do because I'm just simply impressed by this competition but it's just the world's strongest man sister Kendall it's the world's strongest man and they hold it every year of course this year they had to postpone it but I loved watching it I love watching the reruns I like watching the old ones but I'll just name a few and I don't know if anybody in here knows these guys it's okay but the the ones that impressed me the most brother Garrett he's not in his head is half Thor jörgen son from Iceland okay I don't know how to spell his name I just copied and pasted he is six-nine brother Chris 452 pounds Brian Shaw from the great United States is 6-8 445 pounds that's all muscle okay that's all muscle and Eddie Hall I believe you won last year's World's Strongest Man he's from the United Kingdom he has 6-3 he's a little shorter still taller than me he's 362 pounds probably call him shrimp but some of the things that they the highlights of course that I like watching some of the venues are competitions and the ones that you are probably more familiar with or the Atlas stones Atlas stones way there are five of them actually in their way anywheres from 220 pounds to 360 pounds and they got to pick them jokers up and set them on pedestals I can't do that one of the most impressive ones I believe is the vehicle pool they will pull a train they will pull a boxcar or multiple boxcars I don't know how and they'll even pull a say Boeing 737 and I don't know how they do that but they will literally get those mammoth machines to move in the direction that they are moving and they will move them 100 feet brother Noah out stroke out just trying to pick up the rope but anyways and also the deadlift which is very impressive lifting weights or vehicles totaling around 1,100 pounds straight up off the ground and that's the things about the strongman that impressive me and and the Bible says that in order to spoil the goods of the house you must eliminate the strongman

in the Bible there were safety protocols just like we have today we have security systems we have alarms we have cameras we have motion detectors and those are our safety protocols today and the thing about it is is even a Bible had safety protocols one of the earliest safety protocol was instituted by Abraham he went and armed 400 of his servants because he knew that he might face danger and so he went and instituted a a group of armed men to protect the crowd or his family or his hid the people that were with him in the book of Judges Rahab hiding the spies and the soldiers which happened to search her house her house was one of the first ones to be searched why because it was a house that was built inside of the wall so that was one of the first things that they were to clear because they found out there were spies among them and in the course Jericho the Bible doesn't specify how big Jericho was but history states that Jericho's walls were as wide as a six-lane highway as a matter of fact history also says that they would have chariot races along the top of the wall how cool is that to have chariot races at the top of a wall I mean a six-lane highway is huge so imagine the power of God when he toppled the walls of Jericho but walls were very important it was part of their safety protocol Nehemiah enforced the rule that the gates of Jerusalem were to remain open while the Sun was hot the minute the Sun became cool he would shut the door the reason why is because at dawn and at dusk it was a little hard to see brother Chris and because he knew the dangers of the surrounding areas he knew that he did not want somebody to come in and try to spy out the land or try to hurt the cause of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem amen and so he would rather be safe than sorry because sometimes in our life we need to be safe than sorry rather than going out there and trying experimental whatever rather than going out there and seeing whatever sometimes we just need to be a little bit more safe than sorry amen I know we have the liberty to do something but just because we have the Liberty to do something brother Paul doesn't make it expedient hallelujah hallelujah even in Jesus's day to speak against Jerusalem and the temple was punishable by death and it was brought up in his trial that he spoke out against Jerusalem and the temple and so even in the home I'm going to refer back to my text even in the home if you lived in a bad part of town there was a safety protocol that you can put in place bishop and that was most houses in jerusalem were very small possibly one to two rooms not very big and the doors of those residents were not wooden at times they were not reinforced steel they did not have locks or dead bolts there was no motion detectors cameras there was no ring doorbell in that day as a matter of fact the most of what they had sometimes was just a thick woven tapestry draped over the door to provide some type of privacy and that's it so in order to protect yourself and to protect your family and to protect your valuables what you were able to do is in the farthest reaches of the home you would stick the youngest child and then you would start from there to the oldest to the oldest to the oldest and then you would put place your wife next to the children and in between the door and your spouse the the the father would lay down at night and the reason why he slept next to the door brother Paul is if somebody was to sneak in a thief in the night if you will was trying to sneak in it would awaken the strawman the father first and he would rise up and combat the thief and combat the enemy he would not sleep in the furthest room from the house he were from the door he would not place himself somewhere he would put himself closest to the door to protect his family to protect his goods because he knew that if the enemy was to take me out that he's got my children he's got my wife he's got my valuables

and so we've got to understand that sometimes the enemy wants to destroy us he is like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour he roams about trying to destroy that he not only wants to kill he not only wants to steal but he also wants to destroy that which is good in your life he wants to bind the strongman amen hallelujah what is the strong man the slow man could be the man in the home the strong man can also be the woman in the home and the strong man can also be the child in the home men the strongman is a strong prayer life the devil wants to bind that the strongman is your faith in God and in a miracle and in a blessing and in the future that is ever so bright the enemy wants to bind that the strong is strong morals the strong is strong giving the strong is strong faithfulness the strong is strong standards of living and the enemy wants to bind that let me tell you something here this evening that's all you may have is your faithfulness my friend do not give that up do not turn your back on that because I'm telling you right now but if the enemy takes the one thing that you are strong in he will be able to spoil your goods hallelujah hallelujah some of y'all are just a few tithes away from a financial blessing but the enemy wants to destroy and bind the strongman some of y'all just a few services away from your miracle but the enemy wants to bind the strongman some of you are just a few miracles away from your family walking inside this building but the enemy wants to bind the strongman some are you are just a few promotions away just a few days away from your blessing but the enemy all he wants to do is bind the strongman hallelujah hallelujah if he knows that if he can and that's just not a person it's the one thing in your life that you refused to give up on let me just break it down for you if you don't mind it's just a few things that you refuse to give up on some of us it's just faithfulness some of it's it's our standard of living some of us know hey I have given and God has blessed me I refuse to give up on this giving blessing because I know that God will me amen and if you and that's just the thing is the enemy doesn't care if you are backslidden in every other area if there is one thing that tethers you to the house of God he'll still want to sever that if you've given up on everything else in life except being faithful to the house of God then the enemy will still drive a wedge between you and the house of God if you are coming to church for your ministry to play an instrument to sing to to to be a part of the the outreach ministry ministry to be a part of the greeters to be a part of that whatever it is if that is all you have your proverbial candy stick then the enemy will still try to drive a wedge and bind that one thing that ties you to the house of God he'll try to do it every time he will not stop until he has cut why not

there are some people that will live that will back slide on a Pentecostal pew so why does the enemy still attack him because there might be one service there might be one sermon there might be one song there might be one verse there might be one notes there might be one prayer meeting there might be one or two a call brother Paul that just might get them off their seats into this altar and God will change and turn their life around that's why he will not stop until he takes everything out of your life the enemy cometh not but to steal kill and destroy if he steals it why does he have a need to kill it brother Noah if he kills it why does he have a need to destroy it why it's that Holy Trinity he wants to steal it he wants to then kill it and then for some reason he wants to destroy it from your life why simply because the enemy knows that there is any part of you that is left inside of that dead miracle it might be resurrected so he's got to eradicate it from your life to where you'll never darken the doors to a Pentecostal church you'll never darken the doors again and he will not stop until that's out of your life and Phil he binds the strongman

and we have to be wise about this we have to be wise for the law court because we know we know some of us get in here and we jump into this thing with both feet and the first time we get in here we get to go in somebody says a cross word to us man we come in we excited and somebody says something that it's just completely in left-field where did that come from do they even like me the enemy will not stop things could be going so well man I tell you what I believe God's gonna bless me and then the next day you lose your job it happens man god bless me with the bonus then the engine goes out we finally can get caught up on some bills then the a/c unit goes out and never fails just as soon as you get ahead in life it seems like the enemy knocks you back because he's just trying to bind the strongman that's all he's trying to do guys he's just trying to bind the strongman and if we're not wise or we're not prudent because the Bible says in order for us to gain strength we have to be wise it's resistance that's how we get stronger it's resistance this is just an opportunity to grow it's okay it's a good thing I got that $300 bonus I can go fix the engine it's resistance it's an opportune to grow and I'm not gonna allow the enemy to come in because somebody said the wrong thing to me because somebody didn't pick me because somebody don't like me I'm not here for them anyways I'm here for Jesus I'm here to worship Him I'm here for me I'm here to go to heaven I'm not worried about nobody else I'm worried about me and the people that are in my house hallelujah hallelujah and I've got to be careful that a root of bitterness don't grow up in my heart and destroy the strong man I am so angry at this person I am so angry at that person and the biggest people that can hurt us in our lives are our previous leaders our past leaders and if we're not careful those are the people that we can use against any future potential leader and we can create the atmosphere so toxic that the future leader or any future leader cannot even survive in before we even give them a chance they're already failures in our mind hallelujah I'm closing this all right

in the book of Judges Samson was instructed to do three things now I've got to be careful here because I don't want this to be a license to do whatever you want to do okay my thing is don't bind the strongman so if you're hanging on by a thread please don't cut it don't allow nobody else to cut it so the issue is this I don't want us a license to do whatever we want but I do want us this is just a clarion call to those that if it's just one thing please strengthen it add to it become stronger don't just have one thing that is holding you or tethering you to this church make it a bunch of stuff get involved well I've only got one ministry man if I lose that ministry I might well go get them another ministry some of us where two or three hats in this church if I lost if I didn't sing another son I have two other things I can do maybe it'd be great to cut down I don't know you know it gets a little stressful sometimes but you know I love being here I love being a part of the body of Christ but Samson was instructed course by his mother to do three things we all know what it is don't drink anything that is strong don't touch anything that is dead and don't cut your hair and throughout his life we see brother Paul where Samson made the mistake in two of those areas we know this of course because he drank wine we know this because he went through a vineyard and he squeezed some grapes and he drank wine we know he touched something dead because he slew a lion came back later and I being some bees built a hive inside its stomach and so he had to touch the dead carcass of that lion in order to get the honey but there was one thing that he refused to do for the garrotte he refused to cut his hair he refused he wouldn't tell anybody his secret the Philistines were so mesmerized and plagued by this the secret that they employed Delilah to try to garnish the secret from Samson and so she went in there and wooed him she fixed him dinner he's put on a nice dress she wore a perfume she fixed her hair she looked good and she said what is the secret of your strength and he lied to her time and time again believe it some total of seven times he lied to her because I'm not going to let somebody know what my secret is we all know the story you know when he drank that first strong drink he didn't lose his strength then we touched the carcass of that dead lion he didn't lose his strengths in so I don't want us to be fooled because just because our whole world don't cave in on us because we fail to do something God has given us a span of grace and the thing about it is is we may still have one thing brother Paul that we're still strong in that could still turn things around for our life you know I've messed up in this area I've made a mistake in that area but you know what I'll never stop coming to church I've made some mistake and I've hurt some people I've stolen things from people I've robbed things but I'll never stop giving I'll never stop giving and that's no excuse and that's not justification to do that but I'm telling you here tonight God does not strike you down because you mess up one time he may not even strike you down because you mess up two times and Bible says the righteous man falls seven times so he may not strike you down for that but I'm telling you right now that you do not give up on him and if your faith is strong and your faithfulness is strong I'm telling you right now it doesn't matter what has happened in your past and what has transpired and what you messed up in God can still turn things around all you have to do is don't bind the strongman hallelujah you may stand

remember it wasn't until he cut his hair that he lost his strength the Bible says he got up as times before and will know this because I'm gonna go to work like any other time but that umbrella of him that that umbrella of protection is no longer there because we allowed the enemy to bind the strongman we're no longer under the protection of the holy ghost we get up and we go about our day just like times before we ride to work nothing bad happened they said all hell would break loose if I left the church I believe they lied to me but we don't have that protection of the Holy Ghost we don't have that blessing following us the Bible said surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord see that's the strong man right there I'm gonna dwell in the house the Lord and I don't blink goodness and mercy are just some figment of my imagination I think there are two angels that's me that's me it's all me okay that's not in Dague that's in not in Nelson's that's not in Matthew Henry that's that's in Dallas Jones right there is commentary I think they are angels I think they're angels called goodness and mercy and wherever I go good things are gonna happen sister woods and wherever I go if I make a mistake mercy will be there to step in and cover me so I want to leave this place tonight with those two angels goodness and mercy I don't want to leave without those angels if I bind the strongman I will be sure to leave here unprotected hallelujah but I want to leave here with the protection of the Holy Ghost
