Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

The Christmas story read aloud: the child conceived of the Holy Ghost

  • He opens by reading aloud the account of Mary, who was espoused to Joseph and was found with child of the Holy Ghost before they came together.
  • Joseph, a just man who was not willing to make her a public example, is told by the angel of the Lord in a dream not to fear taking Mary as his wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
  • The child is to be called Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins; and the reading says all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet — a virgin shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is God with us.
  • Joseph does as the angel bade him, takes Mary as his wife, and when her firstborn son is born, he calls his name Jesus.

The reading continued: the birth at Bethlehem and the shepherds

  • The reading goes on with the decree that all the world should be taxed, which brings Joseph and Mary up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David.
  • While they are there, the days are accomplished that she should be delivered: she brings forth her firstborn son, wraps him in swaddling clothes, and lays him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
  • Shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night, are met by the angel of the Lord with good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people: unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord — and suddenly there is a multitude of the heavenly host praising God.
  • The shepherds come with haste and find Mary and Joseph and the babe lying in a manger; they make known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child, while Mary keeps all these things and ponders them in her heart; and when eight days are accomplished, the child's name is called Jesus.

A birth the world did not notice, long promised

  • Over two thousand years ago, in an obscure little town, a babe was born and they called him Jesus — and most of the world had no idea of the significance that was going to be placed on that birth.
  • Yet he had been prophesied many years before — the reading itself made reference to how the prophets had known this baby would one day come — and he would be different from all the other babies, because he would be God with us.

God with us: God's answer to the separation of sin

  • God chose man, his prized creation, and made provisions all the way from the beginning — from the first man and woman, Adam and Eve — to interact with them and be a part of their lives.
  • Man allowed sin that separated him from God, but God never intended for that to be a separation between him and mankind; all through the Old Testament they would bring sacrifices, yet God did not want that to have to be the case.
  • So he decided to roll himself in flesh and come to earth: Jesus, which means God with us. He came for one reason — so that he could continue his relationship with mankind.

No fanfare — and God tells the shepherds

  • From the reading it is evident that when he came to this earth it was not noised abroad very much; there was not a lot of fanfare. They had gone to pay the taxes when the time came for her to be delivered of her child.
  • The baby was born in a stable and laid in a manger — more than likely, he says, a cave — yet God thought enough of a few people to speak to shepherds who were just out doing their daily tasks, letting them in on the surprise: a baby has been born, and he is going to save people from their sins.
  • The shepherds heard the host of heaven, and then they decided it would be in their best interest to go and see for themselves what they had heard about.

Not just another baby

  • There were probably people around who had pity instead of awe — a poor young lady having to deliver her child in a cave, in a barn, in a stable — but what they did not realize was that instead of pity it called for awe: this was not just another baby, and this was not just another birth. This was Almighty God, and it was something that was going to change the world forever.
  • Today, when the name Jesus is mentioned, it is recognized all over the world, through every culture; some people get angry at that name — even King Herod wanted to kill him, and that is nothing new — but no matter how powerful or strong anyone is, the name of Jesus is going to carry on throughout the ages.

Those who worship him — and those who have only heard

  • Some two thousand years later, those who have come to worship him know how powerful it is to worship the King of kings, and how awesome it is to know that their sins have been taken away because of the blood he shed; and like the shepherds, who found him and made it known abroad, it is not hard to tell about the goodness of Jesus when he has taken away your sins.
  • But there are others who have only heard his name; they have never responded, never come to worship him. He encourages anyone like that today: do not allow this season to pass without finding some place to worship Jesus, because he really is worth worshiping.
  • Yes, the babe grew up, and he became a man, and he died for our sins — but none of that could have taken place if the birth did not happen.

He is everything: the names of Jesus

  • The shepherds had probably heard a lot of noises in their fields — wild animals, the bleating of the sheep — but they had never heard the angelic host, and they realized there was something different about this, a different ring to it. And in the presence of God, he assures us, there is something felt that is not felt on a normal basis, and it is not something to take lightly.
  • He is Jehovah; he is the Messiah; he is the Almighty God. He is the Prince of Peace; he is the King of kings; he is the Lord of lords. He is the Alpha and the Omega; he is the beginning and the end; he is the finisher. He is the lily of the valley; he is the Rose of Sharon; he is the bright morning star.
  • He is everything you could ever want: he is the answer you are looking for, the solution to your problems, the healer of your sickness and disease, the mender of your brokenness. His name is Jesus.

Calling on that name

  • You can travel to the far east, or to other countries where they may not worship him, and when you speak the name of Jesus, they take notice. He tells of someone who was on a cruise, in India, in the place where anybody can get up and sing: they had sung everything they could, and then someone began to sing Jesus songs — and all of a sudden everybody got quiet.
  • When you mention that name, the devils begin to tremble, because you have spoken the most powerful thing in the world: all power in heaven and earth is given to the name of Jesus, a name that is above every name.
  • When I am sick, he says, I find that he is my source; when I am lonely, I find that he is the friend that sticketh closer than a brother; when I am lost, I find that he is the way, the truth, and the life. When I just start calling out that name, I begin to feel his presence and his glory all over again.
  • He wonders if that is what the shepherds felt as they stood out there; what Bartimaeus felt when he cried out to Jesus, and he stopped, and the pressure was removed from his eyes and he was able to see; what the woman on her way to the cemetery with her son felt when Jesus stopped them and told him to rise; and what Paul felt when he received the Holy Ghost and received his sight back.
  • He testifies of the night of January 31st, when he lifted his hands in the altar, began to call out to Jesus, and he flooded him with the power of the Holy Ghost. He cannot express the feeling — but he can assure us that when you call on the name of Jesus, the one we are celebrating, you will feel his presence.
  • He closes by asking everyone to stand to their feet, and for just the next few moments to talk to that name — to call on the name of Jesus.

now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise when as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph before they came together she was found with child of the Holy Ghost then Joseph her husband being a just man and not willing to make her a public example was minded to put her away proudly but while he thought on these things behold the angel of the Lord appeared unto Him in a dream saying Joseph thou son of David fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife for that which is conceived of her is of the Holy Ghost she shall bring forth a son and thou shalt call his name Jesus for he shall save his people from their sin now all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the Prophet saying behold a virgin shall be with child and shall bring forth a son and they shall call his name Emmanuel which being interpreted is God with us then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him and took him unto him his wife and knew her not until she had brought forth her firstborn son and he called his name Jesus

now it came to pass in those days that there was there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed and this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria all went to be taxed every one into his own City and Joseph also went up from Galilee out of the city of Nazareth into Judea unto the City of David which is called Bethlehem because he was of the house and lineage of David he was to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife being great with child so it was that while they were there the days were accomplished that she should be delivered and she brought forth her firstborn son wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger because there were no room for them in the end and there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field keeping watch over their flock by night and lo the angel of the Lord came upon them and the glory of the Lord shone round about them and they were sore afraid the angel said unto them fear not for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people for unto you Is Born This Day in the City of David a savior which is Christ the Lord and this shall be a sign unto you you shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in a manger suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying glory to God in the highest and on earth peace goodwill toward men and it came to pass as the angels were gone away from them into heaven the Shepherd's said one to another let us now go even unto Bethlehem and see this thing which has come to pass which the LORD hath made known unto us and they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph and the babe lying in a manger and when they had seen it they were they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child and all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds but Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart and the Shepherd's returned glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen as it was told unto them and when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child his name was called Jesus

and an amazing over two thousand years ago in this little town obscure little place community there was a there was a babe that was born and they called his Jesus we had no clue most of the world had no idea of the significance that was going to be placed on that birth of that child

however he had been prophesied many years before even made reference in the reading that I just read of how that the prophets had known one day there was going to come a baby and he was going to be different from all the other babies he's going to he was going to bring something to this earth that nobody else could bring and that he would be God with us

I've never ceased to be amazed at how that when we reflect on life and how that man is just a one of God's creations but how that God chose man and looked at man said hey I want to do something special with them and he made provisions all the way from the beginnings the first man and woman that we we have record of was Adam and Eve

but when he made provisions to to interact with them and to be a part of their life and then the man has allowed sin that has separated them and he said I never intended for that to be a separation between me and and my my prized creation

he God never wanted it to be a separation between him and mankind so he's always made it possible that we could overcome our sin and and it was a long time throughout the Old Testament they would bring sacrifices but he again he said I don't want that to have to be the case and so he decided to roll himself in flesh and he came to earth and went among us thus his name was Jesus which means God with us and he came for one reason and it was so that he could continue relationships with mankind

when he came from this earth it was evident from the reading that I just read to us today how that when he came to this earth it was not noised abroad very much there was not a lot of fanfare there was not a lot of things that took place it was just something that happened and probably they didn't even realize it was going to happen while they were going to pay the taxes but nevertheless when they got there it was their time for her to be delivered of her child

and this baby was born and it was born in a stable in a manger they laid it in a manger more than likely according to theologians and historians it was probably a cave and here this child was born

but God thought enough of a few people that he spoke to these shepherds these shepherds was just out doing their daily tasks living their lives like they normally do doing what they did on a regular basis and God spoke to them and said hey let me in let you in on a little surprise there's been a baby that's been born and in this baby that's been born it's going to save people from their sins

they heard it then they heard the host of heavenly hosts speaking to them and oh how magnificent it would be to hear the angels sing and then they decided that it would be in their best interest if they where and saw for themselves what they had heard about

you ain't it amazing today that when we still hear that name Jesus it's recognized all over the world through every kind of culture every they may not claim him as their Messiah I hate that they're wrong but they may not claim him as their Messiah they may not claim him as their king but he's still recognized

and let me assure you something of all the people in the world that has recognized that he is the king and has come to show their worship to him he's made a marked difference in their life amen there's some of us sitting here on the pews today that has come today and we have come just because we have come to worship Jesus the King of Kings the Lord of lords the one that was that didn't have to come to earth but he chose to come to earth he didn't have to bear our sins but he chose to bear our sins and he came so that you and I could have eternal life amen

but as you can see when you mentioned his name some people they get angry that's nothing new even King Herod wanted to kill him that's nothing that's nothing that's just to happen recently and you know what I don't care how powerful you are and how strong you are the name of Jesus is going to carry on throughout the ages row it's always going to be there but across every culture across every region no matter where you are in the world in the known world where man Leo's there is that name of Jesus that carries significance

it may have seemed insignificant at that time it may not look like it was just nothing but another normal birth and probably there was people that were around that had pity instead of all because this poor young lady had to live her child in a cave in a barn in a stable instead of having some Bush home or some hospital where she could be delivered

but what they didn't realize was that instead of pity they needed all because this was not just another baby this was not just another birth this was the birth this was Almighty God and this was something that was going to change the world forever

now some 2,000 years later we stand here today and those of you that have come to worship Him you know how powerful it is to worship the hand king of kings those of you that understand that he is the savior of the world you know how awesome it is to know that your sins have been taken away because of his blood that He shed for those of you that have responded and come to worship Him like the Shepherd's they found him and then they know in a brawl it's not hard to tell about the goodness of Jesus when he's taken away your sins amen it's a hard

but then there's others in the world today they still just know have heard his name they haven't responded they haven't come to worship Him all they they have heard of talk about it they've probably been around other people that have but they themself they haven't they haven't done what they should do and let me just encourage you if you're one of those today I wouldn't allow this season to pass without me finding some place to worship Jesus because he really is worth worshiping he is not just another babe and yes the babe grew up and we know he'd become a man and he died for our sins and we understand all that but none of that could have taken place if the birth didn't happen

and you know the Shepherd's realized there's something more to this they probably never had no angelic hosts sing to them while they were out in the Shepherd's field they had probably heard a lot of noises it was probably wild varmints and animals trying to get their sheep or maybe the bleeding of the sheep but they had never heard the angelic host and when they heard it they realize there's something different about this there's a different ring to this and and we should let me assure you today you've probably been to a lot of places you may have even been in bigger crowds

but let me tell you when you've entered into the presence of God I assure you that some of you have felt something here today that you may not feel on a normal basis and it's not something just to take lightly but we have come today to worship that king we have come today to exalt that king we have come today to lift up that key because he's still alive and he's still wailing he's still ruler of all the world

he is Jehovah he is the Messiah he is the Almighty God he is the Prince of Peace he is the king of kings he is the Lord of lords he is the Alpha and the Omega he is the beginning in the end he is the four and the finisher he is the lily in the valley he used the Rose of Sharon he used the bright morning star he's everything that you could ever want he's the answers that you're looking for he's the solution to your problems he's the healer of your distinctness and disease he is your mender of your brokenness he's everything that you could ever want his name is Jesus his name is Jesus

you can travel to the far east and maybe they don't worship him but when you speak that name of Jesus they take attention you can go to some of these other countries where they may not worship Him but when you speak that name of Jesus they take notice you may walk until

I had someone tell me just a while by that they were owner on a cruise and and they were in the India it wasn't me by the way they were in they were in the place where they do the the singing and anybody can get up and sing and you know some of them are good some of them are horrible and they had sang everything they could and then this this person got up and said we begin to sing jesus songs and they begin to sing about him and all of a sudden everybody got quiet

why when you mention that name when you mention that name the devils begin to tremble in the head when you mention that name you just spoke the most powerful thing that's in the world you've caught on the almighty and all power in heaven and earth is given to the name of Jesus

that's the reason that I say today no matter who you are no matter where you're at no matter what your plans are no matter what the hustle and bustle is that you're dealing with during this season let's worship the name of Jesus why because when I'm sick I find that he's my source of sure when I'm lonely I find that he's the friend that sticketh closer than a brother when I'm Walsh I find that he is the way the truth and the life when I just mean something I can just start calling out that name and you know what I begin to feel his presence and his glory all over again

I wondered so many times as I as I begin to call on that name I wondered if that was what it felt like to those Shepherds as they stood out there to feel I wondered if that's what it was like when when they begin to call out his name they'd win when I begin to call out his name I wondered if that's what

it was like for bartimaeus when he cried out to Jesus to stop I wondered if that was one of us like when he stopped and he began to feel that pressure removed from his eyes and he was able to see

I wonder I wonder what it felt like when that winner was on her way to the cemetery with her son and Jesus stopped them he said rise you know I've wondered if that was the same feeling I have felt when I'd be praying and begin to call on that name of Jesus and all of a sudden my heaviness my burdens begin to be lifted I wonder if Paul had the same feeling that I had when he received the Holy Ghost and received his sight back as the night that it was January 31st when I lifted my hands in the altar and I begin to call out to Jesus and he flooded me with the power of the Holy Ghost I wonder if that was the same feeling

I don't know i don't i can't even express to you the feeling that i felt much less express the feeling that you feel when you call on that name but I can assure you one thing would you call on that name of Jesus the one that we're celebrating you'll feel his presence

so today I'm will ask you stand to your feet I'm I ask you to for just the next few moments I want us to talk to that name of Jesus that Jesus is that it's a name that's above every name it's higher than any other name and it's all powers in that names can we do that today
