Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
Summary
- Cornwell opens the evening session leading the worship himself, points the congregation to brother Libby's message from that morning, and poses the question he preaches on all night: are you a weeper or a reaper — sitting around whining, or dining? He thanks the steering committee, tells of stopping for coffee on the road in yesterday with brother Sutton, then directs the church to the Book of Ruth, chapter 2, and reads Boaz's answer to Ruth (Ruth 2:11-14): all she has done for her mother-in-law is fully shown, the Lord is asked to recompense her work, she finds favour in his sight, and she is brought to eat at mealtime and sit beside the reapers.
- From that text he retells the whole story. A family that runs from God runs into trouble: they flee the famine for Moab and lose the husband and both sons there, because no preacher is as hard as the world. Revival, he insists, is not optional — churches that do not have it will lose their young people — and it never depends on who stays or leaves; he learned that pastoring across the river at Crossroads, where his faith collapsed when the families he leaned on walked out, and he vowed never to depend on anybody but God for revival again. Naomi comes home bitter, blinded by grief, calling herself Mara and lying to herself about having gone out full; Ruth, the stranger, is the one full of faith, and her pledge to Naomi is the making of her. The church, he says, is not what it used to be — the United Pentecostal Church he became part of in 1967 was half backslid and fighting among themselves — and revival will not come because the right or wrong men hold office, but when God's people decide to be reapers instead of weepers. In a dramatised scene he pleads for young converts to be given the right to fail rather than protected out of going at all.
- He closes with Ruth in the field: willing to pick up seeds one at a time for a depressed Naomi, she is noticed by Boaz, given handfuls of purpose, and brought up from her knees to glean among the standing grain; and the mention of Boaz's name revives Naomi herself — the curtains come up, the light comes in, and she starts planning. Ruth starts with one seed but ends owning the field, because she was willing to go when everything around her was dark. Don't tell me, he says, how hard it is to have revival in Alabama.

to be here the Book of Ruth chapter 2 are you a weeper or Reaper are you sitting around whining or dining there are too many whiners in Alabama and I'm going to thin the crowd out tonight too many whiners you're not going to like me when I get through at all but I got news for you I don't like you before I even start are you mad yet chapter 2: 11 and Boaz answered and said unto her it hath been fully showed me all that thou has done unto thy mother-in-law since the death of thine husband and how thou Hast left thy father and thy mother and the land of thy Nativity and are come unto a people which thou knewest not here before the Lord recompense thy work I'm going to tell you something don't underestimate when the preacher puts his finger in your face and gives you a word don't underestimate the power of that word that he gives to you if you'll learn how to be sensitive to God and when he gives it to you reach out and grab it then she said let me find favor in thy sight my lord for thou that thou H has comforted me and for that thou has spoken friendly unto thy handmaid though I be not like unto one of thine handmaids and Boaz said unto her at Meal Time Come Thou hither and eat the bread and dip thy morsel in the vinegar and she sat beside the reaper are you a weeper or Reaper you may be seated The Story begins with a family that is running from God when you run from God you will run into trouble oh my preacher is just so hard I'm getting up under this bondage and you run right into the most severe bondage it is easier to escape the preacher that it is to escape the world that's right there's never been a preacher as hard as the world it came to pass in the days when the judges rulle that there was a famine and that famine was orchestrated by God to perform a particular work in the heart of his people but there's always somebody in the congregation that's just too good to go through what everybody else is going through I feel a tongue talking Spirit coming on I am special in this church and I don't deserve this I don't drive an old Ford car leaking oil don't the preacher know I don't wear Rags like everybody else I got a silk necktie on and I don't eat at McDonald's we're better off than
everybody else and I don't know why I have to go through that I just ain't going to put up with this I'll just change churches somebody say come on with it I'm coming there everywhere they're in every Church you got them in yours I got them in mine you call a prayer meeting they don't have to come because they are special people it's only the jerks that hadn't made it yet that needs to go to prayer meeting but then God will put pressure on every church and the pressure is mounting right now because churches that don't have Revival are not going to survive you're going to lose your young people you're going to lose your children you're going to lose your husbands and your wives Revival is not optional it's mandatory we don't have a choice as to whether or not we pray or fast or get a hold of God I'm telling you it's got to the hour when it's compulsory that we have a move of the Holy Ghost and if we're not he one God's going to send a famine to put us back where we need to be with him and when God puts a pressure on you're going to lose some people the black two black preachers were talking one of them said man we just finished a Revival and the other one said did you have any blessed additions no no blessed additions but we had some blessed subtractions now I can preach this tonight because of what I preached last night our Revival is not dependent on the demon I mean I mean Deacon on the Pew not that there's any difference between a demon and a deacon but it's not dependent on your right-hand man in your church you can have Revival it doesn't matter who leaves or who stays if your trust is in your Saints you're trusting in the wrong thing Revival does not come from the people it comes from God it comes from above it comes from heaven brother subber is going to preach after me and he Pastors in baloa what a name and I used to Pastor right across the river at Crossroads you know where that little church is with the graveyard the graveyard was livelier than the church and I had Revival as long as there were three or four families there that they announced one day that they were leaving and when they left I never recovered from it because my life's existence was dependent upon them and when I left Crossroads I realized that I made a tremendous mistake of putting my faith in whether or not people come or go whether they stay or leave and I made a vow to God that day that I will never again depend on anybody else for Revival I will stand by myself with God and say God I can have Revival it doesn't matter who's there or who's not there I don't need a crowd to shout I don't need a crowd to talk in tongues I don't need a crowd for a miracle all I need for that is for God to be on my side Hallelujah if you can't shout because somebody else is on the other side of the church then you you don't have the Holy Ghost because if you have the Holy Ghost we are more than conquerors through him who gave himself for us always remember this when people run from God they run into trouble they said we are we don't have to put up with this we've got enough money to buy you
hul and they packed up and they went to Moab but in Moab they ran in to some severe trouble their two sons married moabite women in a few years later Naomi loses her husband in a Land of Plenty your full pocket book is no guarantee that you're going to live forever and then she lost her two sons you know when you're proud as Naomi and IMC were that they had enough importance about themselves that they didn't need to suffer with the children of God that they could run from the famine when everybody else had to endure it I wonder how Naomi feels now when she's in the land of Moab running from God and she loses the things that are most precious to her you hear me if we don't do God's will we're going to lose some real precious things to our lives seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and then the things that you want will be added unto you we need to walk the kingdom talk the kingdom we need to sleep the kingdom dream the kingdom we need to get inside of this Kingdom and realize that the kingdom of God is more important than anything else that's in this world you know what Naomi hears that there's bread in Bethlehem and so she decides to come home her two daughter-in-laws are going to come with her and one of them she convinces to stay the other one Ruth says whether thou goest I will go where you Lodge I will Lodge thy people shall be my people people and thy God shall be my God Naomi could talk the talk but she couldn't walk the walk oh she talked about God to her daughter-in-laws but she wouldn't walk in the walk and na Ruth thought that when Naomi got back to Israel that everything was going to be all right with Naomi but all Naomi could do was talk about how good God was she didn't know how good God was but she put something in Ruth and she said I'm not leaving you you got a good God I'm going with you and your God's going to be my God we're talking about somebody that's different than everybody else in Israel we're talking about a stranger coming into the house and I feel a spirit a prophecy on me right now that the greatest Soul winners haven't been won in Alabama yet but there are some people in Alabama that's not part of us yet but if we can find those people they'll turn Alabama upside down there's preachers in Alabama that's got faith that they haven't been saved yet there's saw winners in Alabama that haven't been reached for God yet I am a freak you're a freak sit down excuse me please sit down there's a lot of freaks Among Us brother Cornwell is not supposed to have no big church he's not the son of no big time Preacher what's Libby doing preaching the Alabama Revival comp he got a big church up in the Washington DC area but his mom and dad's not Apostolic he doesn't have no Heritage in Pentecost he's just a newcomer what's he doing up front oh I don't like that we need to get the old rooted and settled people up here but you know what somebody made a mistake of going out there in that world and finding a Reaper and when the Reapers came in the reapers are going to take over this thing and the reapers are going to reap and the weepers are going to weep but it got used for I just have to leave them behind because
there's a world that we've got to reap in this hour don't sit around and tell me about the brush Arbor days don't tell me about the days of Revival because the Revival I'm having is greater than anything that you've ever seen sorry but that's the truth and I'm having m in air conditioning I'm having mind without swalling beetles no mosquitoes I'm having mile without having to sit next to people who stink but I don't want to come back 20 years from now and tell you about the revivals I had 20 years ago because I want an outpouring of the Holy Ghost all the way until I hear the sound of a trumpet somebody shout amen somebody shout amen somebody shout amen we need to quit telling our children there used to be good preachers I got used for you they're still good preachers but I got better news for you there's young people sitting on our pews that's going to be better preachers than we are and greater Soul winners than we are woo honey I'm making the carnal mad I was preaching in a big church not long ago dead in a mackerel I jumped up on top of the pull pit jumped over the pull pit jumped up on top of the front Pew and they had their arms folded I wear size 12 actually I wear size 12 but I let 13 feels so good I buy 14 and my momentum carried me up over the front Pew and I found myself standing on top of the front row front Pew and I was still moving forward and all I could do was put that size 12 Broan on the next view I want to tell you something you've never seen so many beehive hair dudes split it looked like Moses walking across the Red Sea on dry ground and somebody motion with the ushers to grab me and four big old bruisers back in the back and I just jumped off the back row right into their laps and before they knew what happened I was coming back down the aisle talking in tongues popping my neck doing the whirly bird did I make some folks mad oh yes I made some folks mad they hate my guts even this day they still point out the scar marks that I put on their precious furniture and they never seen the 60 adults that we left on their pews when I left there I'm preaching and I'm going to keep on preaching there's one thing that's more important than anything else in the world and that is thy will oh God be done in earth as it is in heaven okay let me get my sermon now Ruth comes with her Naomi comes home and they look out say is this not Naomi you know the hand of God on on your life in bad situations can blind blind you to the truth bitterness can blind you to reality bitterness will paralyze you she said don't call me Naomi call me Mara for the almighty hath dealt bitterly with me it never dawned on her that she was at fault God didn't send her to Moab she packed up and left God's hand wasn't God's hand on her it was the world's hand that she chose the world's hands instead of God's hand she was lying through her buck teeth notice what else she lied about I went out full and the Lord brought me home again empty that's the biggest lie that was believing she didn't go out full she went out with two backslid teenagers and a backsliding
husband and she came home with a moabit gentile girl that was full of Faith I'll take Ruth any day over IMC and maon and shyon I'll take Ruth of a new convert that just came to know God over all the backsliders in the whole world that sitting on our pews and don't even know they're backsliding quit lying Naomi you're never going to recover as long as you lie to yourself you're never going to have Revival as long as you lie to yourself now there's a big there are some similarities between Naomi and Ruth and there's some big differences both of them had husbands both of them had a family both women experienced great loss in their lives there was just some huge differences or excuse me Sim ities but there were some differences Naomi was ending her souljourney and going home Ruth was leaving home and beginning her souljourney y'all get that I want you to notice Naomi came home bitter broken and blinded by grief and Ruth was coming to Bethlehem with great possibility some people are backing into the future looking behind I remember the mosquitoes I remember them good old smudge Poots oh I remember old sister Jones cutting the dust up in the sawdust talking in tongues I remember them good old days and all the time you're passing Apostolic Revival on both sides but you can't see it because you're blinded by the direction you're looking you're going into the future whether you face it or you turn your back to it we're not going back to the 40s honey I promise you we're not and we're not going back to the 50s thank God and we're not going back to the 60s or the 70s and we're not going back to the 80s and we're not going back to the 90s and you can sit around and say the church ain't what it used to be all you want to but thank God the church is not what it used to be because the United Pentecostal Church that I became a part part of in 1967 was half backslid and no Revival and fighting among themselves and I don't want to go back to that I want to go back to Fresh Fire where churches are having an outpouring of the Holy Ghost and men are more interested in the salvation of souls than they are in programs sorry about that but that's the truth because when I got in church they had a big split we're still splitting we're still bickering and they're they're more interested in things that don't matter they are in things that do matter who cares who the presper is I'm walking on Dangerous Ground who cares who the superintendent is you collect TI and do that kind of stuff you got to do and make phone calls and arrange all this and have meetings praise God I just want to talk in tongues to pop my neck and do the worldly bird my my friend if the country didn't fall when Clinton became president the country is not going to fall no matter who the the superintendent is or District superintend the Pres we're not going to fall apart because we have people in certain offices and we're not going to not have Revival because the
wrong men's there and we're not going to have Revival because the right men are there we're going to have Revival when we decide to be Reapers instead of weepers we're going to have Revival when we decide that my church has got to have Revival my two acres has got to have Revival my people has got to have Revival do we need the organization certainly we need the organization we need home missionary departments and we need foreign Mission departments and we need all those things but I'm going to tell you something ladies and gentlemen that's not the epitome of it all so down I only got a couple more minutes Naomi came home bitter don't call me Naomi and she went back to her little house that she left it was run down window was broken out she got got her some dark blankets covered up the windows so no life could get in put an old piece of a cot together climbed up in bed want to know if anybody had some Prozac that could loan her depressed bitter grieving leave me alone I don't want to talk to nobody people don't want what I've got you're right about that I certainly don't want that can I have an amen but look at chapter two Naomi had a Kinsman of her husbands a mighty man of wealth of the family of lemonade his name was Boaz and Ruth the Gentile said unto depressed Mara let me now go to the field let me go superintendent please let me go over to this little village that don't have any churches please let me go but you don't understand I just got a burden I got to go I want but please sir I I talk to the board and convince them but I really got a burd I gotta go I gotta go just gotta go now son we don't want you going to that Hamlet because you'll backslide over there lose your family you'll lose your family you don't know what you're you don't know what you're doing go back go back to your church and just be a good Saint and help your pastor and teach a little Sunday school class of the three-year-olds and you know we we we want to protect you we want to protect you and and make sure that that that you don't fail our job is to make sure that you don't suffer any my God the greatest thing that you can give to anybody is just the right to fail you don't have to support them just give them a right to fail my God how are they going to learn if they don't fall flat on their face and have to depend on God no we want to be like the Democrats make them dependent on the government I'm going to tell you something right now we need to learn how to depend on God if we go broke we go broke if if we go hungry we go hungry if we get lose everything we lose everything don't go teach a Bible study you might lose that Bible study and if you do you'll lose your faith and you won't be worth anything anymore do you want to be a Reaper or a weeper no guts no glory come on you bunch of cowards where are you do you want to be a weeper or a Reaper do you want to always think about what could have been or do you want to stand up and say look I got the rest of my life before me I'm going to rise or fall but I'm going to do something for God I've got to find somebody that I can win to Jesus Christ I don't want to offend nobody my wife said that she don't like me traveling so I'm trying to fix that up bar
I've already been kicked out of two districts working on a third Hallelujah they're the losers not me CU I know who I am I know what God's called me for I'm not bragging I'm not being arrogant I'm just telling you somebody got to change this thing somebody got to look us Square in the face and say we got to quit being cowards and quit pulling our Curtains Down and quit thinking that we're nobody and realize that we're the greatest people that God's ever had since he started the church she said let me go and glean let me go and glean now the the Kansas wheat Harvest has just ended and all the fields have nothing but wheat stubble and they use mechanical Reapers now rather than than the sickles we don't lose as much grain as the sickles but we do lose some and she was willing by the law of the Lord of Naomi to go into the field as a person in poverty and she could take her apron and she could pick up seeds one at a time and friend here is a somebody that's totally different than everybody else a stranger to the Covenant stranger to the Commonwealth of Israel and she's on her knees pleading the cause of a depressed Jewish woman I gotta feed Naomi I got to feed Naomi she's down right now but if I can get something in her I pick her up she helped me one day she she she done something for me one day she introduced me to the right God and here comes Boaz on the scene and he says who is this different person out here in the field who's that g what's a gentile doing in my field and they said you don't know who that is they said that is Ruth the daughter-in-law of one of your kin folks while you're riding your high horse and eating at the steakhouses and driving your Cadillacs and playing on your golf courses and fishing in your fishing boats and shooting your shotguns and going on your big vacation that little girl is out there picking up seeds one at a time to feed somebody that's Ken to you Boaz immediately slapped himself upside the head and said I do remember my fault and she went to Ruth and said it has been told me clearly what you have done for a woman that's kin to me and he said look at lunchtime you come and sit with the Reapers and then he said to the young men you let handfuls a purpose Fall by the wayside for her and then he said you let her glean among the sheath you see it doesn't matter what the circumstances are it doesn't matter where you come from it doesn't matter how poor you are or what your color is or your nationality or what tongue you speak the only thing that matters are you willing to go by faith are you willing to get up and say I can't die here I can't stay here until I lose everything and she started reaching and getting little handfuls and somebody grabbed her by the shoulder and said come here honey I'm going to hurt you why don't you get up off your knees and and and just glean here among the uncut sh e she went from a seed to Handful to picking from the clusters of the grain but that's not all when she got home that day Naomi said how did you get here so quick she said well I was out in the field this man came up on his horse and said I know who you are now and he let handfuls of purpose fall and he let me stand up because my knees were bloody and let me get among the standing grain and I I was
willing to get one seed I was willing to get a handful but when I got among that standing grain it just came so easily for me and she said honey whose feel did you did you glean in today oh the curtains was dark on the Windows she was taking her Prozac to keep down her depression and her grief but friend when when Ruth mentioned a name when Ruth who called out a name something was revived in Naomi he said oh my God he's K to me and she got up and pulled the curtains away and she let the light come in and she started planning I'm going to tell you it only takes one Soul winner one person on fire for God to bring the shades up and put the light back in to the soul of a church At The Mention of the name of Boaz Ruth is not gleaning seeds today and she's not picking up handfuls anymore and she's not cutting the standing grain because you see one night Bo woke up and at his feet was a gentile girl that's going to become his bride and I want to tell you she started out getting one seed at a time but when all was said and done she owns the field now she owns everything now but she didn't own everything until she was first willing to go when everything around her was dark and depressive she was willing to go don't tell me how hard it is to have Revival in Alabama because you're lying don't tell me what your circumstances are and who's against you I'll trade places with you any day
