Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
Greeting and the character of this meeting
- Cornwell opens saying he'll be fighting the clock and will preach in high gear, and thanks the meeting for having him at the Alabama Revival Conference; the presence of the Lord has been rich for those with their spiritual antennas out.
- He notes a peculiar pattern in the meeting: a lot of preaching from the book of Matthew, allegorical and parable preaching — and parables, he says, are for those in tune to hear what the Spirit is saying.
- He credits brother Morgan's and brother Wilson's ministry at the meeting, then tells the story of a preacher who faxed for his sermon notes and later preached his sermon back at a camp meeting — until Cornwell took the mic mid-sermon and they traded places to the congregation's delight.
- He seats the congregation: he has no texts tonight and doesn't know what to read — but with revival, there comes a cost.
The cost of revival, and Papa's war
- The cost theme is introduced through his in-laws: four years ago his mother-in-law developed Alzheimer's and went to a nursing home; Papa, his wife Dolly's father, had a heart attack and came to live with them.
- Packing up the farmhouse, they found Papa's World War II love letters and a box of medals: Papa had landed at Normandy on D-Day and marched sixteen months to Berlin — liberation of Paris, the Battle of the Bulge, letters from Eisenhower and Patton — yet never made more than $5,000 a year, always gave the preacher the tenth and the best of the garden, and paid his taxes without loopholes because he lived in America.
- Cornwell declares his love for America plainly, and will not have its flag dishonored in his church.
- Papa has only lately begun telling the war stories: chaplains on every landing vessel, and Eisenhower walking among the troops knowing thousands of the boys he touched would not come home.
The invasion, and why not everyone is coming home
- Cornwell confesses a spirit of dread over this sermon, but a compelling force like Eisenhower's: if France wasn't invaded, the war could be lost — and when revival comes to a church, a district, or a movement, there will be casualties; not everybody is coming home.
- He asks the meeting plainly: do we really want revival, or are we satisfied talking about it? He has preached revivals in churches that never had an outpouring, and once the invasion starts there is no pulling back, whatever the cost.
- But without revival the cost is greater: the sovereign move of God he is seeking brings not only Holy Ghost outpouring but judgment, conviction, healings — and death. He is not satisfied pastoring a carnal congregation.
Preeminence: you can't buy the man of God
- The majority of churches, he says — 50.1% — are family-owned and operated, and some preachers are hirelings afraid of their congregations; a deacon board will not tell him what he can and cannot preach. He is the general in his church, and there are no important people in it except Jesus.
- A man tried to hand him his tithe in $100 bills; Cornwell refused it — give it to God; you can't buy this preacher.
- He tells of teaching a wealthy woman a Bible study: she opened 1 Corinthians chapter 11 and asked if he preached it; he answered that if it's in the book, he promised God he would preach it. She said she would take her tithe to Jimmy Swaggart's church instead; he answered that he ate before he knew her and would eat when he couldn't remember her name. You can't buy a man of God.
Scriptures: 1 Corinthians 11
Three challenges, and the first: preeminence
- If the movement is going to have the revival it talks about, three areas must be challenged; the first is preeminence.
- Paul withstood Peter to his face; we are all on the same level at the foot of the cross, and from the top down and the bottom up the church needs a renewing of the Holy Ghost — get rid of our importance and find out who the important one is.
Preachers' kids, and those who never get on board
- Cornwell defends preachers' kids fiercely: people who won't challenge the pastor to his face take it out on his children; he made a deal with his church — I'll help save your kids if you'll help save mine — and the preacher, not his kids, is the standard setter.
- Some people will never get on board and will die like the firstborn in Egypt; others board only out of fear, follow through the Red Sea, and then Korah spirits rise up against the man of God.
- He tells of the Boeing worker who came to his office to say the pastor made too much money; Cornwell proposed they swap contracts — his own education and hours figured out to a raise — and sent the man out of his office. If the preacher cannot rebuke and correct, there is no apostolic authority and no apostolic revival.
Unbelief at Kadesh Barnea: Numbers 13
- At Kadesh Barnea the spies were sent; Cornwell names Numbers 13 and retells the report — the land flows with milk and honey, but "we're not able" — against Joshua and Caleb's "let's immediately go, for we're well able."
- The spirit underneath is unbelief, and Cornwell owns his share: everyone has doubted, feared, and wondered if their church would survive; problems are temporary unless we make them eternal.
- Unless unbelief is challenged, the church stays in the wilderness and dies in the wilderness, as that generation's carcasses fell.
Scriptures: Numbers 13
New converts, standards, and believing you're forgiven
- He rejects the lie that standards keep apostolic churches small: lately the outpouring has fallen on people coming out of alcohol, drugs, and broken homes; a ponytailed couple came to the altar during his green-Bible marking sermon and came back the next night shaved and bringing their television and worse to the pastor, asking if there was anything else he wanted — they wanted their family straightened out.
- He believes in standards and order in the house of God, and states his youth curfew plainly: he has buried eight kids in three years, every one killed after 11 p.m.; the Bible doesn't say it, but the bishop says it.
- He is weary of people who do not believe they are forgiven and must be constantly reminded they are saved; the same blood that saved you the first time can save you again — and if we cannot have sustained victory, we will never get sinners prayed through.
The sealed book: Revelation 5
- Reading from the fifth chapter of Revelation — he first says the sixth, then corrects himself in the same breath — Cornwell reads of the book in the right hand of him on the throne, sealed with seven seals, and no man in heaven or earth able to open it.
- The reading opens into his own story of unworthiness: men and women have told him for twenty-some years how sinful and unworthy he is. He tells of his conversion-era days bringing carloads of college kids to church, of never qualifying to testify, and of being kicked out of a church — guitar in hand — on a letter from his former pastor, only to be made an assistant pastor fourteen miles down the road, where he won a hundred adults to God in five months.
- His conclusion stands against the condemnation: I just believe that I am forgiven; I have been washed in the blood, and you're not going to talk me into unbelief. His church keeps three rules: I will not condemn my brother — three times over — because the brother you condemn may be the one who can pray the prayer of faith for you.
- He returns to the reading: no man was worthy to open the book, but the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David, has prevailed — and a church suffering under "I am not worthy" must take its place as the righteousness of God.
Scriptures: Revelation 5
"I am a believer": children of God and the refrigerator
- If the charismatics can talk about being children of God, how much more should apostolics stand and say it: I am a child of God; I deserve healing and blessing because he is my Father.
- The illustration is his own kitchen: with four children of their own and a house full of others, the refrigerator is always stocked — and a child who wants something at 3:00 in the morning knocks on the bedroom door, and Mama gets up and makes coffee at 3:30. God's children should come to their Father the same way, without the "I'm not worthy" begging.
Carnality and prayerlessness
- The second challenge is carnality: you can't get people to pray, and you won't get revival until you do. Deacons need to be praying; there need to be regular prayer meetings.
- Youth camp proves it: by Wednesday night, after days of teaching and preaching, the carnality is worked out of the kids and they explode in glory — if it works at youth camp, it can work in our churches, if we are not afraid to preach all day and all night.
- Churches are prayerless — prayer rooms empty for weeks, no prayer before or after church or during the week — and Jesus' word stands: my house shall be called a house of prayer.
Sin, and the call to the altar
- The third challenge is sin: if we haven't got the guts to stand for what we stand for, we ought not be preaching. Abortion is murder; alcohol will send you to hell; a sex-crazed generation is burning out of control — and if others will march in the street for their cause, apostolics should stand and say, this is as far as we go; sin will separate you from God.
- He tells of a nine-year group in his church who would not pray and would not forgive, and of three men who came to his office wanting his job; the congregation stood and applauded as the three walked out. Preach against sin — name it by name, and turn the furnace up.
- He closes with the appeal: pastors, pastors' wives, preachers and their wives are invited to the altar to commit — for the remainder of 1996 — to prayer meetings, prayer chains, and changed schedules, whatever revival costs. Revival demands change from the top to the bottom.

Praise the Lord everybody. I realize that I'm going to be fighting the clock here. So I am going to preach in high gear. Thank you so much for allowing me to be in Alabama Revival Conference. The presence of the Lord has been very rich to those who have had their spiritual antennas out. Amen. I have noticed something peculiar about this meeting. First of all, there's been a lot of preaching from the book of Matthew. There's been a lot of allegorical preaching, parable type preaching, types and shadows. When Jesus preached in parables, his disciples came and said, "Why do you preach in parables?" He said, "It's not for them to know the mystery. You're going to know what I'm saying. You got to be in tune." And everybody's not going to understand why. Everybody's not going to understand frankincense and gold and myrr. But those who are listening with different type ears are hearing what the spirit is saying. I have been deeply moved by what I heard yesterday. Uh, brother Morgan has fed my inner being and uh, brother Wilson this morning and his teaching this morning. I I really wish now that I would have given him my time uh, because he brought some things uh, in the spirit that that I needed to that I that I had been wrestling with and that I needed to hear. And then when brother Morgan got up to preach the night, uh I thought he had had taken the wrong Bible to the pullpit. I thought he had stolen my notes. Preachers do that, you know, with fax machines and uh and cassette tapes. Who needs to pray anymore? I had a preacher the other day call me. He said, "Preach any good sermons lately?" And I said, "That's the only kind I preach." He said, "You got any notes?" And I said, "Yeah." He said, "My fax number." Hallelujah. Praise God. I had a preacher call me uh some time ago and won't know if I've been preaching anything lately. And I told him a sermon I just got through preaching that blessed our church. And uh about six months later, I got this tape list uh from the east coast and there his name was on it with that sermon I'd given him. And lo and behold, we didn't team up for a camp meeting the following year. And that night he got up and took a text and was preaching my sermon. And I opened my Bible and there was my note. And he got about a third of the way through and I I I bumped the superintendent. I said, "Uh, can we obey God here?" He said, "Yes." I said, "Okay." So, I walked up and tapped him on the shoulder. I said, "Give me the mic. Let me preach a while." He was following my notes to the tea. So, I preached a third of the sermon and he came back and got the mic and picked right up. The the the place went wild. They thought it was God. We just had the same notes. Isn't God good to us? If we going to go to church, let's let's have fun. All right, God. It's not a sad sack place. Amen. You may be seated. I don't have any texts tonight. I don't know what to read. With revival, there comes a cost. Sometimes we are willing to pay it and other times we aren't. Four years ago, my mother-in-law developed Alzheimer's and we had to put her in a nursing home. Papa, my wife's dad, didn't want to go into a nursing home, and he was going to live by himself on the little farm that they own. And uh for a couple of years that worked out all right, but he had a heart attack and he wasn't able to take care of himself properly.
My wife is an only child and uh she didn't know what to do and I said, "Why don't you ask your dad, Papa, if he would just come live with us?" And she said, "You don't you wouldn't mind that?" I said, "No, I wouldn't mind." I said, "He's your dad. You're the only one that is responsible. I want you to go get him." So, we went down to the little farm to the home place. And uh we loaded the little trailer that we had taken down with all of the goods that mama and papa had accumulated down through the years. I don't know that papa ever made more than $5,000 a year in his entire life. But if the chicken laid 10 eggs, the preacher got one. If the tomato vine had 10 tomatoes, the preacher got the biggest one and the purest one and the juiciest one. He was a preacher lover. He was a God lover. If the church needed sweeping, Papa and Mama and Dolly cleaned it. And for almost 20 years, Papa and Mama and Dolly cut the grass. They painted the church. They kept it up. And they never missed its services. I didn't know a lot about Papa except that he was just nothing but a cotton farmer. He had 26 acres of cotton himself and then he uh gave his labor to another large farmer that he uh farmed for them for cut rate wages and he never complained. And when we sold the cotton or when Papa sold the cotton, you can count on one thing. The preacher got the 10th, faithful people to God. And uh when I when I married Dolly, uh for many years, I filled out mama and papa's income tax. And I want to tell you that all the years that I filled out the income tax, I I knew some of the shortcuts and I knew some of the loopholes, but papa said, "No loopholes for me. I don't want that deducted. I live in America. I'm going to pay my taxes." To my knowledge, he didn't care whether they were Democrat or Republican. He didn't speak evil of his country. I like papa. When I went to marry Dolly, mama sit and argued for five hours. But as soon as I said, "Can I marry your daughter?" Papa smiled. He didn't have any teeth. He got up and you could hear him whistling across the cotton patch. He sat there patiently for many hours till I got the courage to ask, but he never argued with me. We were friends. And so papa come to live with us and uh we we packed all of Papa's stuff out of a little uh farmhouse and we brought it to Witchah and we put a lot of it in storage but there were several boxes that that we wanted to go through it because it contained pictures and uh we we didn't know even my wife didn't know a lot about it but when we got to going through some of Papa's stuff in the years before she was born there was a box of love letters that papa had written to mama during World War II before they got married. And I sat down, brother Lewis and and Ma Doll and I got to reading some of the love letters that papa wrote mama and mama wrote papa. And uh there were there were about 16 months of letters that was written from the time they landed at Normandy until the time they got to the Ryan River. for 16 months. Papa landed at Normandy at D-Day and marched for 16 months from Normandy all the way to Berlin. He was in the liberation of Paris. He was of the Argon forest. He was in the Battle of the Bulge. And uh there were medals that were just a box full of medals that he received. We didn't know all of this. Boxes of medals and stars and ribbons and letters from Dwight D. Eisenhower and and General Patton and uh and and when when we started going through those letters, you'd never known by papa's lifestyle that that that he had ever left that little 26 acre cotton farm and and got drafted in the army and went through boot camp and military training
and was in the transports and and landed on Normandy Beach and and and and and there was a fresh appreciation for the price that papa had paid that Dolly could be born in America and be free. I don't I I when when I see young people wearing uh these jerseys over their shirts of some of these dooddads that won't salute the American flag, don't wear them in my church. You ain't welcome. When you want to change your name from one thing to some hub someh Islamic faith, don't wear their don't wear their sports jersey in my church. Cuz I'm going to tell you right now, I'll take it off of you personally. And God don't think it's backsliding doing it. And if you don't think I'm doing it, you ought to follow me to the bathroom scales, cuz I can and I will because I love America. It's only been in the last year that that that papa has been willing. He all the years my wife and I have been married 25 years. It's only been this last year that that papa feels like that maybe his time is up and and he's starting to talk to us about his past. And he told a story here just a few days ago that that that ripped my heart out. He said when they was on those ships out in the English Channel and they were preparing the land on Normandy Beach on Omaha Beach, he said on every vessel there was a Protestant chaplain and there was a Catholic chaplain and there was a Jewish chaplain. And it didn't matter what faith you were. Dwight Eisenhower made sure that on every landing vessel there was a minister and on every ship that there was enough chaplain to take care of the men that was going to land at Normandy. Dwight Eisenhower and his staff prepared for weeks and months in the buildup in England before they invaded the coast of France. And as they prepared the the story was that Dwight Eisenhower was so overcome with the fact that we got this little window of opening that we're going to have to land at Normandy or we're going to have to put it off for a long time and uh and and we got to we got to attack now. But the overriding factor was that Dwight Eisenhower understood that not every man that lands at Normandy is going to come home. He knew that thousands of young American boys were going to die on the beaches of Utah and Omaha and and and and those places where they would land. And and Dwight Eisenhower was stricken as he would walk among the troops and he would touch them and he didn't act like a a general, but he tried to act like a human knowing that he was going to touch some of them that was going to die and not come home. I must confess to you that when we talk about revival, when we talk about the outpouring of the Holy Ghost, I I I I cannot but help to look at my own church and and look at your church and and know in my heart that when we have a revival, not everybody is coming home. I I have dreaded preaching what I'm preaching tonight. There's been a spirit of dread on me. But yet there is a compelling force that tells me just as Eisenhower knew that if they didn't invade France that we could possibly lose the war and the risk and the loss was going to be less than the gains that they would get when they get to Berlin and they stopped the Nazi factories. And something tells me that that when we have a revival in our local church, can I have an amen? When we have a revival in our district, Brother Lewis, when we have a revival in our organization, when we have a revival within our movement, there's going to be casualties along the way and there's going to be people that are not going to make the journey with us. Uh, and and there's a foroding spirit that comes upon us and we have to ask ourselves, do we really want revival or are we satisfied with just talking about revival?
Brother Morgan talked about evangelizing five and a half years and he classified churches as as gleaning churches and handfuls on purpose and so on. Unfortunately, God did not allow me to go to very many churches where they dropped handfuls on purpose or where there was a church that had a revelation of the harvest. But for many years, I went to churches that never had a revival, that never had an outpouring of the Holy Ghost. And I know whereof I speak tonight. And when I would start revival in that church, it didn't matter whether I got paid or not. And there were churches that I did not get paid in. And I determined that I would never leave a church without leaving souls on its pews and having a breakthrough where regardless of where I went. And that's the attitude we got to have. Once we start the invasion, there's no pulling back. It doesn't matter what the cost is. Once you start on this journey towards revival, there is no turning back. Can I have an amen? But if we don't have revival, the cost is going to be even greater. If we don't have an outpouring of the Holy Ghost, the cost is going to be greater because God said in the last days, I will pour out my spirit. And it's those who are willing to say, "All right, I know there's going to be casualties on the way. I'm going to do everything in my power. I'm going to do everything that I can to get everybody prayed through before the Lord comes." I'm not talking about the rapture. I'm talking about in the revival. Because when the presence of God comes in a powerful way, it's going to be more than hooping and hollering and dancing and jigging. There's going to be judgment passed out. There's going to be conviction poured out. There's going to be healings poured out. There's going to be death poured out. You see, when revival comes, it's not just 50 people getting the Holy Ghost in some prophecy conference. It's not just 35 getting the Holy Ghost because somebody comes and puts them in chairs and lays hands on them and talk them in tongues. I am not seeking that. I am seeking a sovereign move of the Holy Ghost that will shake entire communities, that will shake entire states. I'm talking about a revival that will stir everything on your pew that can be stirred in this hour. I'm not satisfied with pastoring a congregation of adulterers and horongers and fornicators and carnal people. We need an outpouring and a visitation of the Holy Ghost like we have never needed an outpouring of the Holy Ghost. But when we decide to invade hell, there's going to be some casualties along the way. Can I have an amen? There are some people that are simply not that are just simply not going to go with the wave of revival because the majority of our churches and when I say majority that means 50.1%. In the in the United Pentecostal Church, in the independent apostolic churches, in whatever oneness organization you're talking about, they are familyowned and operated. That quiet in the crowd. I would love to tell you that there are no hierlings in Pentecost. I'd love to tell you every preacher preaches the truth. I'd love to tell you every pastor is a man of God, but I I I would be lying through my teeth to say that because there are some preachers that are scared of their congregations because they said we ain't landed at Normandy and we're not going to land on Omaha Beach and we're not going to liberate Paris and we're not going to Dargon Forest and we're not going to the Battle of the Bulge and we don't care what Hitler's doing. We are satisfied with our little 25. Don't you know that my daughter-in-law plays the piano? My son-in-law is a Sunday school superintendent. We own this church. We pay its ties. I'm going to tell you something. May hell turn its heat up for the people who own and operate a church outside the power of the Holy Spirit. Let me tell you something. There'll be ice skating in hell before a demon. I mean, a deacon board. There's not a whole lot of difference there. Before a de I can't can't even say it right now. before a deacon board is going to tell me what I can and what I cannot preach. I'm the general in my church and I have decided that we're going to invade the gates of hell. We're going to kick the gates off of hell and we're going to rescue as prisoners.
If you are a VIP in your church, you better pray through and you better pray through in a hurry because there ain't no important people in our church except the one person of the Godhead and his name is Jesus. He is the only one that can have preeminence in our church in these last days. Friend, you better take the glory that belongs to God and you better bring it to an altar and lay it before God's feet. You better take your crown off your head and you better cast it at the feet of Jesus before you get in trouble with your load. Somebody said amen. There are people that just simply do not want the vessel going for the invasion. There are people who want to buddy buddy with the preacher so that he won't preach against their sins. I had a man one time said, "Pastor, I want to pay you my tithe." And he reached into his wallet and he pulled out a wad of $100 bills and we're going to put them in my hand. I said, "No, put them in the offering plate." Oh, he said, "But I want to give you my tithe." I said, "Give them to God." That's who I said, "That's who who who owns them. Give them to God. You ain't buying this, preacher. You take your $100 bills and stuff them down your sorry throat, and may they give you constipation. I was teaching a woman Bible study and she was paying every week between $1,100 and $1,500 a week tithe. That's not even her offer. Would you like to have her phone number? And one night in Bible study, she said, "Sit down." I sit down beside her and she opened up the first Corinthians chapter number 11 and she said, "Do you preach this?" I said, "Is it in the book?" Yes, it's in the book. I said, "What do you think that means?" She said, "It sound to me like I got to keep scissors out of my hair." I said, "It sound to me like you're wise beyond years." She said, "If you preach this, I won't be able to attend your church." It started in my feet. this burning sensation. It wanted me to say elimo hasha. Oh, y'all was here last year, wasn't you? Hallelujah. And I said, "Ma'am, I just want you to know that if it's in the book, I promised God I would preach it." And she said, "Well, I guess I'll have to start going to Jimmy Swagger's church because he doesn't preach this." I said, "That's Jimmy's problem. He had other problems besides that one. But I said, "That's his problem if he refuses to preach what is in the word of God." And she said, "I'll have to take my tithe and send to him." I said, "Let me just inform you of one thing. I ate before I knew you, and I'll eat when I can't remember your name." Let me tell you something. You can't buy a man of God. It doesn't matter whether you're the chief deacon or the chief demon. You can't buy the man of God. There's a price and there's a cost to this revival. And if we're going to have the revival God wants us to have, there's a price that's got to be paid. And the head deacon ain't going with you. Do you have any deacons in your church? By sure I do. They wait on widow women. Hell will freeze over before some demon's going to tell me what I can preach and what I can't preach. Put that in your pipe and smoke it. Some of you are mad. If I can't see good because there's a glare in my eye, but if I knew you was mad, I'd come down and preach right in front of you. There are three there are three areas that we are going to have to challenge people on in our churches, in our district, in our movement if we're going to have the revival we say we are.
Don't give me this Tommy rot that we're going to have revival because you elect a certain official. No, no pun intended. Okay? I don't have any axis to grind against anybody. So don't call headquarters and tell them that I've been blasting UPC. I'm I'm part of UPC. I pay my dues and I can say what I want to about it. Long as I towed a card and I'm a part of this. If you can say what you want to say, I can say what I want to say. I love men of God everywhere. I don't have anybody in my mind. I don't have any any puns to attack people with. I'm simply saying if the United Pentecostal Church is going to have revival, there's things we going to have to deal with. One, we got to get rid of our preeminence. All right, Simon Peter, you're the you're the pope around here and you carry a lot of weight. But friend, when the Apostle Paul came along, hunched back a half blind and and and and and and fresh out of sin, he didn't mind looking at the Apostle Pet say, "Wait just a minute. You're wrong." Oh, I'm the Pope around here. You better not say nothing about me. Let me say this to everybody in the United Pentecostal Church. We are all on the same level when we kneel at the foot of a cross. If I ever as a pastor ever once in a while got to walk down five steps and kneel at my altar again and say, "God, I'm a sinful man. I need a renewing of the Holy Ghost." Then everybody in Pentecost ought to be able to say, "I'm a sinful man, and I got to have a renewing of the Holy Ghost every once in a while." Hey, I I I am pleading with God that from the top down and from the bottom up that we have a renewing of the Holy Ghost in the United Pentecostal Church. Let's get rid of our importance and let's find out who the important one is. There's a price to be paid. I found out we love preaching more than we love what we're preaching about. I I love to hear Jeff Arnold preach. When I can't laugh, just get him to come preach. He can puke pot all over you. I just love to hear him preach. And there are some people I like to see preach because they come to the pulpit all wound up and and they preach and they unwind while they preaching. I love preaching. I love preachers. I love saints of God. I tell you what else I love. Follow up preachers kids. Some of you dirty, slimy, filthy, sorry, good for nothing people that you ain't got guts, god, grits, and grace to look your pastor square in the eye and challenge him. But you'll find his poor little old kid and slap him around and talk about him and and you'll backslide over the preacher's kid making a mistake. But I made a deal with my church. I said, "I'll help save your kids if you'll help save my kids." But when you don't want to save my kids, I don't want to save your kids. And you need to keep your mouth off of preachers's kids and let them be normal in your church. Preachers kids aren't the standard setters for a church. The preacher is the standard setter for a church. And I'm going to tell you something else. If I prayed for your little girls that's had abortions and restored them, uh, and if I prayed for your little boys that are fornicators and help restore them, uh, I hope my kids hadn't done that. But if they do, uh, I'm going to give them the same restoration that I give your evil children. That didn't cost anything. But boy, it feels good. And I mean every word of it. It's time that we help these pastors that are doing everything they can to save your children and save your family. Why in the name of God don't you help the preacher save his children and pray for them and fast for them and praise them? Some people are never going to get on board. They're not going to get behind the blood and they're going to die like the firstborn in Egypt. And then there are some that they gonna get on board for a while because they're scared to not get on board. Moses said, "I'm going to bring them out by a mighty hand of God." He forced them out of Egypt. They loved the flesh pots, the onions, leeches, melons, and garlics. They love Pizza Hut fellowship more than all her fellowship. They love the stories that they could tell around a pepperoni pizza instead of the stories told around a holy Bible.
And the preacher comes in like a whirlwind and and preaches and God vindicates the man of God. And people get scared and they get on board and and and and they follow the preacher through the Red Sea and out into the wilderness only because they're scared. But after a while that Corora spirits rise up. All right, preacher. You brought us this far, but I want you to know now I ain't scared of you no more. And you take too much on yourself. I had a I had a man in our church for about five or six years and first two or three years of our church it was it was lean pickets and there were weeks when the preacher didn't get paid because the bills were greater than the income. Isn't it amazing how people never see that but they wonder how the lights stay on? It's called P A S T O R Pastor And one day our church was full, chairs was in the aisle and we had the ushers standing down front and people brought their tithe and offerings in front of the new office. And here come this guy worked at Boeing. He made 14.95 an hour that back then not too good now but person back then is pretty good. And so he went to put his tithe and check and his offering and the plates were stacked. They were stacked up. Hallelujah. There'll be new socks and new drawers for the preacher this week. Amen. And I watched him staring at the offer place and and I don't have the gift of the spirit, but I have the gift of suspicion. I told my wife, he said, "He's going to come see me." Sure enough, he knocked on my door and I invited him in my little cubicle of the office. I said, "How can I help you?" He said, "Well, he he started." He said, "You you make too much money." I said, "I do." I said, "How much do I make?" I I don't know. But I said, "How do you know I make too much?" And I said, "Well, I tell you what, let's do." I said, "Y'all just signed a Boeing contract." And I said, "Now, you didn't finish high school and I finished college. I got a BS degree in chemical engineering. I have 35 hours above a bachelor's in biomed engineering and nuclear technology. Y'all don't look near as impressed as you ought to look. But I said, I tell you what, uh, I'm more educated than you are and much smarter than you are. But I said, I'll sign the Boeing contract with you. You sign it, I'll sign. You make 14.95 an hour. Your wife works at a place and she work she makes $8 an hour. So my wife will let her make $8 an hour. I'll make $14.95 an hour. And I said, "You get Saturday and Sunday off. I get Monday and Tuesday off." So I said, "Your Saturday and my Monday will be the same, and your Sunday and my Tuesday will be the same." And I said, "On Saturday, you make time and a half, and on Sunday you make double time and a half." So if I have to work on Monday, it's time and a half. If I have to work on Tuesday, double time and a half. You get paid time and a half for all over eight hours. So I'll get paid time and a half for all of eight hours. And on Saturday, if I have to work more than eight hours, I'll get time double time and a half. And if I have to work on Sunday uh over time, I'll get triple time and a half. So let's just figure out how much I'd get. And and so we got to figure it. Friend, when I figured up my wife and I was going to make 55,000 a year. I'm getting a raise. And I said, "Thank you so much for coming to my office and we're going to pass this Sunday night before the whole congregation. I we've been needing a raise. I'm going to be able to buy a new pickup." Now, he said, "We we we can't afford to pay you that." I said, "Then you get your little hide out of my office and don't you ever question the man of God again." I said, "You wasn't concerned when I wasn't getting a paycheck. And now don't you be concerned because I'm driving a new pickup." If our churches don't have apostolic authority in them, we will never have an apostolic revival. Because if the preacher cannot be high enough to rebuke you and correct you, come on now. I'm preaching now. We need a man of God in our lives if we're going to have a revival.
Ain't no preacher going to tell me what to do than the devil's telling you what to do and the world's telling you what to do and hell is telling you what to do. I'd rather have a godly man and a godly church and a godly people in my life than the devil in the world. When they got to Kadesh Barnea, they sent the spies. Numbers 13. They said, "The land boiled with milk and honey, but we're not able to do it. We are as Joshua and steal the people." Said, "Let's immediately go for we're wellable. You see, there is a spirit of unbelief among us. I struggle with doubts and with fears like you do. For a person say they've never doubted God, they're not being honest. To say they've never been scared, they're not honest. to say that they haven't looked at their church and wondered if they were going to survive. They're not honest. We've all had times of scaredness and fear and doubt and unbelief and we have to be able to deal with those things because problems are temporary unless we make them eternal. The devil had got time to mess with you very long because he got other folks that haven't been invited. We have a lot of unbelief. Unless we're willing to challenge people's unbelief, we'll stay in the wilderness and we'll die in the wilderness. Moses. God told Moses, "You tell all of those 20 years old and older that their carcass Let me tell you something. There's a spirit of fear of God on me right now. I'm I'm not here trying to be arrogant." Honestly, honestly, I'm taking a beating. I didn't want to preach this tonight. I honestly I'm here only because I feel like the Holy Spirit I don't even need to be in Alabama. I need to be in Cabrini Hospital in Alexander, Louisiana right now. But God wouldn't let me go preach. There's too much unbelief among us. We wear silk neck ties and dark suits and we comb our hair, right? But we're filled with unbelief. We come to church and we are sad. We come to church and we are depressed. We come to church and we have to be pumped and primed before we can worship. We have to be encouraged every time we come to the house of God. That ain't right. We don't know how to get out of the valley by ourselves. Pastors always got to pull you out of your valley. If you don't have enough strength to get out of your valley, you better go back to an altar and pray until you can learn how to get out of the valley for yourself. I am weary with people saying that we can only have small apostolic churches because we preach standards. That is a lie from the pit. In the last few months, we have had such an outpouring of the Holy Ghost on on trashy people that are coming out of alcohol and drugs and tobacco and all kinds of problems in their life. I had a young man came in not long ago and and his ponytail went all the way down to his back and him and his wife were a stragged looking people that was on the verge of divorce. They were on drugs. Their their marriage was on problems. Their kids was pathetic and and they didn't know anything about our church. somebody invited them to church and and and people shook their hand and welcomed them in the house of God. They found themselves at an altar of prayer and and it was one of those time when I was going to preach on green Bible. That's where we take green marking pens and we walk through the Bible marking in green where we can go and we mark in yellow where it's caution and we mark in red where you got to stop. It's called red light edition. And when when when I tear up Jack, friend, I'm going to tell you something. I don't I I I don't have any friends and I walk right down a log. Everything that I'm expecting out of people is going to be a member of this church. From the top
hair of your head, what color it is and how you twist it to the sole of your feet. I may be a charismatic, but I believe in standards. They may be a little different from yours, but praise God, we got to have some some some order in the house of God. and and and and when when I got through, I didn't realize that we had so many new converts uh in that place. Otherwise, I would have waited till they had matured some before I'd done that because it's one of those nights when I don't spare anybody. And I'll be if it weren't them the first ones at the altar and the next night they came back with all their ponytails shaved off and in fact they went overboard and almost skinned their heads. I mean, they brought old junky television sets to church and was wanting to give them to the pastor. One guy wanted to bless me and he brought his box of pornography to church with him. Wanted me to have it. And I thought I said, "What's going on?" Said, "We have lived with the devil so long, we didn't know there was anything like this. Is there anything else you want, pastor? Because we want our family straightened out. We want our lives straightened out. Can I have an amen? In the book of Revelations, give me six more minutes and I'll quit and I'm not near finished. In the in the sixth chapter of the book of Revelation, there's excuse me, the fifth chapter of Revelation, there's an interesting passage of scripture that I just want to bring to you for just a moment. I I'm weary with people who do not believe they are forgiven, who have got to be constantly reminded that they're saved. If you got to be constantly reminded that you're saved, you need to check up on the spirit of God in your life. I've been born again. I've been baptized in the name of Jesus. I have been filled with the Holy Ghost. I've been washed in the blood. Can I have an amen? My sins have been washed away. And the Bible said for a man to sin not, but if he's sin, we have an advocate with the father, Jesus Christ, the righteous. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Don't you know if you make a mistake, you can go back to the blood and the blood will never, never, never lose its power. But there are too many Catholic Pentecostals that's got to wait six months and do pentance and and drag down to the altar night after night. Why don't you realize that the same blood that saved you the first time can save you again? If we cannot have sustained victory, how in the name of God are we going to get sinners prayed through? Hang on. Your seat now. I don't have time to go through all the standards in our church. I just say teenagers, you got to be off the street 11 o'clock at night. You're going to be a member of our church. You off the street 11 o'clock at night. You can't be a member of our youth group. I buried eight kids. The last three years has been shot, heads blown off, heart shot out. Every one of them got killed after 11 p.m. You say, "The Bible doesn't say that. I know it, but the bishop says it." And and the only ones that don't obey it are the lawless ones in Revelations. I'm just telling you, I don't have time tonight to tell you that I'm not a charismatic, okay? I'm apostolic. Jesus name. One God, tongue talking, holy rolling. I got the same problems in my church in Witchaw that you got at at at Elvara. There ain't no such thing as a perfect church. Some preacher gets up here bragging about how holy his church is, we just give him a few months and somebody will commit adultery and mess it up. We are We are a nursery. We are a hospital for sick people to come to. And some people just don't get cured overnight. Can I have an amen? So please spare me from having to use that precious time. In the fifth chapter of Revelation, I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside sealed with seven seals. And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud
There was no man, no preachers ever live in heaven. There was nobody on earth. Brother Morgan in 20 something years of preaching. I have suffered under the hands of men and women who are constantly talking to me about how sinful I am and unholy I am and unrighteous that I am and unworthy that I am. I went to college four and a half years. Brother Eddie Jones preached a revival in Rustin, Louisiana for El Bailey in 1967. 1968 preached a couple. You had an accordion back in those days and I still remember the song that he coming down the road. Remember that Jones? Rustin, Louisiana. He don't even remember me. I was a I 135 pounds back in the day. I'm a big preacher now. and and I was fresh out of the world. Wore Bermuda shorts to church. That's all I wore. It was it was in the late 60s. The hippie movement was on. Free love was everywhere. And the only thing that embarrassed me was I didn't have any hair on my chest. Brother Bailey tried to get me straightened out. I wasn't When I was in high school, we had three or four United Pentecostal boys in our gym class and they wore blue jeans in PE and and and I didn't know it was their holiness standard. I thought they had polio and was ashamed of their legs and and the preacher would get down in front of me and spit it all over me. The first song I learned was showers of blessings. told me one night I came I came with a pair of blue old Bermuda shorts on was sitting there and he said oh it's time he had tried everything else the children of God all the way neck tie to church I broke even sucking eggs I borrowed an old neck tie from the 20s and it was wide enough to cover my whole chest so I came with a shorts on with an old faded tie I obeyed the man of God I don't know why the didn't just say, "Look, we don't wear shorts for the house of God. Let me buy you some britches. Let me give you a shirt." No, they preach against stuff, but they ain't going to help you buy no bridges to obey them. College kids ain't got no money. They wouldn't did back then. They do now. But I was bringing 50 people a month to church. I had an old Ford car that the fenders were falling off and the B were dragging the pavement. I'd bring three car loads a night to the house of God. I brought three car loads one night to church and I'll be if they didn't have a knockdown dragout fight right in the middle of church. I brought three car I brought several carlos. I think maybe four carloads one night to the church. And and I had went by the church to open the church up and turn the air conditioner on. And and and they had cut a soybean field out behind the church. And when they did, it had turned chili. And every rat in the field joined the church. And some idiot had bought some decon and put decon under the dripping faucet in the bathroom. And the rats ate the decon and drank the water out of the three pound coffee can where the drip was and they they they built them a graveyard in the church walls and the place stunk. And I'm scratching my head. I thought, "What in the world am I going to do? I got all these visitors coming." And so I had a bad answer. I said, "Hey, do you know how to tell a church that's the true church from the false church?" "No." "How?" I said, "Friends, around the true church, there's always a stink." I said, "When Noah got on board the ark, he had to live with the stink." And friend, when we walked in, they knew it was a true church. I had several carloads of kids in college one night and man, I was on fire for God. I'd been talking in tongues all day long. Praise God. And they had a testimony service where they called on people to testify. Well, they never called my name. So I jumped up and said, "I got a testimony." And I just started shucking the corn and throwing the cob at everybody. At the church, the preacher grabbed me by the shirt and sat me down. And he said, "Don't you ever testify in this church again." And in four and a half years of living for God and bringing people and praying them through and baptizing in Jesus name, I never qualified to testify.
And when I got my degree and I moved off and got me a job, the preacher wrote a letter to the pastor where I was going and he said, "Brother Cornwell has a broken tooth and a hip out of joint." And I was playing my guitar on the platform. The letter came three weeks after I did. And he walked up on the platform and said, "Brother Cornwell, I received a letter from your former pastor." I said, "Yeah." He said, "Sir, there's a church 14 miles down the road that wants you to be a member there." I said, "What?" He said, "That's right. You're not welcome here." I packed my old guitar up, closed the case, walked down. My wife said, "Where you going?" I said, "We just got kicked out of church." The greatest soul winner in America got kicked out of the church and all I was doing was playing my guitar. My wife said, "Did he not like your singing?" Cuz she didn't either. And we we we drove 14 miles down the road and we we stopped in front of the pastor's house and crossed this little ditch and walked up to an old rusty screen door and knocked on door and he said, "Come in." Here's a big old heavy set preacher with a belly about three times too big. And he said, "Come in, brother Cardinal." And I said, He said, "Oh, you got kicked out of a church." He said, "I want you to be my assistant pastor." I went from a broken tooth and a hip out a joint and from getting kicked out of a church to being a an assistant pastor in 14 miles. But in the next five months, I won a hundred adults to God and left on the pews of that church. Let me tell you something. I just believe that I am forgiven. I don't care what you say or anybody else says. I've been washed in the blood and you're not going to talk me in to unbelief. If we don't believe a little talk with Jesus makes it all right, then we ought to take it out of the song book. because I believe that I'm bloodwashed and that I'm a child of God. How can you have joy if you have unbelief? How can you have victory if you don't say I am a believer and a half all There is so much I got to drive two drive. You're not going to hear me. You won't be able to hear the movie either. Got to pay to get in. But I ain't going to hell if I drive down the road and I turn and I see a movie screen for 10 seconds. I'm not going to wallow in self-pity and repentance for six months trying to get victer preaches against that color. Blood's greater than that. You want revival. We have three rules in our church. Rule number one, I will not condemn my brother. Y'all gossip about each other. Just can't even pray for one another anymore. You've been lying when you go. Rule number two, I will not condemn my brother. Rule number three, I will not condemn my brother. Because a brother that I condemn may be the one that can pray the prayer of faith tonight. I got sick. But if he comes to church condemned, he ain't going to be be able to pray for me and get the victory that I need. Can I have an amen? I want my brother and sister to grow. I want you to get holier than you've ever got. I want you women to quit cutting your hair. I want you to men to quit cussing and lying and stealing and cheating and swearing and chewing the back and all that kind of junk. But let me tell you something. I got to go to the blood and I got to get forgiveness from the blood. And when I get forgiveness from the blood, I'm
going to stand up and say, "I am a believer. I am a believer." There's too much unbelief and condemnation among us. He said, "No man in heaven or in earth under the earth was able to open the book." And I wept much because no man was worthy to open and read the book. Behold the lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David prevailed to open the book and the lof had been slain horns and seven eyes of God sent the earth and he took the book out of the right hand of him taken the bookast hearten pray worthy. We have I am not worthy. If I'm not worthy, why the world call me? He want me to come get some other but I ain't walk I don't even know what humility is. I don't know how to spell it. I don't know how to act. I know if I get out of shape God has a chasting rod. And friend, if you don't think God can chastise you, step out of line. He knows how to beat the car out of you. We are suffering under the load of I am not worthy. You're never going to get healing as long as you're book that I might be made the righteousness I am holy. Sorry. I am righteous. I get your heart out, baby. I'm a child of God. If there's healing, I deserve friend. We got a refrigerator in our house. You know, mama, she loves to cook. She loves to go to the store. She loves to stack that refrigerator full of stuff. We got kids all over the house. We got four of our own and most time we got 10 or 12 of other people here and they don't come to the word weigh ain't nobody refrigerator and he don't care what time of night is he goes refrigerator and if there ain't nothing in the refrigerator 3:00 in the morning he knocked on our door the other morning 3:00 in the morning walked in and walked over to mama side of bed said mama mama mama and I woke up first and I thought I was hearing voices mama I said I shook my wife said what the kids want and so I raised up the bed and I turned the lamp on and he said mama would you think 3:00 in the morning. I want to choke him. You know what mama done? She crawled out of bed and made coffee at 3:00 in the morning. We're sitting at the kitchen table at 3:30 drinking coffee. But there's healing. But we don't come and say, "Lord, this is your child. I've come to get a taste of healing. Lord, no. We walk, I'm not worthy, God. Don't beat me, Jesus. Thank God. Oh my God.
Please, God. We need to get that junk out of our system. If the charismatic can walk around and talk about how that they're children of God, how much more should the apostolic be on their feet and say, "I am a child of God. I deserve healing because he's my father. I deserve blessing because he's my father. Let's all stand. I'm in trouble. Ain't that many preachers around me believe I deserve revival? What are you laughing about? Hey, don't laugh at me. You don't deserve revival either where you're at. We broke the all time Sunday school record in Oklahoma at Old Muggy. And if they had known how we' done it, they wouldn't have even published the paper. We had Captain Hook and Peter Pan. We had a fight on top of y'all building had a had about a 55gallon drum full of candy and Captain Hook got defeated and Peter Pan started shoving the candy out. Man, I don't know where all them kids came from, but we broke the record. I wish I had time to preach on that one, but I don't. The second thing we got to challenge people is their carnality. You can't get people to pray have revival. Well, that went over like a lead, didn't it? It's like you remind me of I'm looking to see if anybody believe that. It's like the blind man walked into Walmart store seeing eye grab by the tail swing around a few times and somebody said, "What are you doing?" He said, "Oh, I'm just looking around. You're not going to pray. You get revival. Deacons need to be praying. We need to have regular prayer meetings." You know, the You know, the night of camp meeting youth camp I like the best. I like Wednesday night. Oh, I love to preach on Wednesday night because Monday night the preacher preaches his duty. Had a bunch of carnal kids that had pray last summer. Talk in tongues. Hallelujah. Mohash and and and Tuesday they start teaching all day long and Tuesday afternoon all day long. and they preach Tuesday night and Wednesday morning the man by by Wednesday afternoon the instructors are going crazy but friend they just keep pumping pumping pumping pumping the word of God to those kids and Wednesday night they explode because they get rid of all that carnality in about three days and then they have two or three nights of glory and splendor and honor praise God if it works at youth camp why won't it work in our churches we're afraid to call a week of Bible college and preach all day and all night because we're afraid that there'll be some folks that don't like to come to church that much but we're not going to get rid carnality. We're not going to have a revival either. Sunday school teachers that don't pray and don't fast and don't seek God and and and and husbands that don't pray except between sicknesses. We need to have prayer going up the house of God. Jesus drove out the money changers and said, "My house shall be called of all the nations a house of prayer." And we're b we're about as carnal as a bunch of cucumbers. There are so little prayer. of the United Pentecostal Church. It is pathetic in in the this is a 20some meeting that I have been to and I've heard more prayer right here than I have in the last 21 meetings I've been to across this country. I go to churches and before church you go to the prayer room to pray a little bit and and nobody's been in the prayer room for weeks. And churches are prayerless. They don't come early to pray. They don't pray after church and they don't pray during the week. It's time that we realize that unless we are willing to attack people's carnality, revival is going to parry and wait. Can I have an amen? And the third I don't I'm not through with that, but I got to finish. The third thing we got to challenge is sin. If we ain't got guts to stand for what we stand for, we ought not to be preaching. I make no bones about the fact that abortion is murder, that alcohol will send you to hell, that you're going to smoke yourself to death and ride into the flames and the gates of hell. We need to understand that we live in a sex crave generation and the flames of lust are out of burning out of control. And if we as a church are not willing to take a stand and say, "This is what we stand for and this is what we believe and don't back down." If the gays are willing to march in the street, I want to know where the apostolic are. I want to tell you something. If the women's livers of and the strippers and the juke joints and the dives and the gam casinos are spreading like wildfire across America, let me tell you, it's time that some red-hot Jesus name apostolic stand up and say, "Wait a minute. We're not going that direction." This is as far in the world as we going to go. If you're going to live for God, it's time to lay sin down because sin will separate you from God.
I kept a group of people in my church for nine years. I inherited them when I came to I built a church around them and in spite of them. They wouldn't pray. One man told me, he said, "You call me pray." Said, "You ain't got to come." He said, "Will you condemn me when I don't come?" I don't condemn. I just announced prayer when we show up. He said, "But when I show up, when I don't get to show up, I feel bad about coming." I said, "You ought to feel bad about not coming. It ain't my fault to feel bad. It's you that won't pray, not me." He said, "We ain't got time to pray like you want us to pray." I said, pay a price that statement, sir. And did he ever more pay a price? I was preaching on forgiveness one night. A woman stepped down the she said, "There are some people I'd rather go to hell than forgive." And I said, "That's exactly where you're going, lady." Carnality of people are so unac. We've learned how to worship. We learn how to clap our hands. We've learned how to make t We've learned how to duke and we need to learn how to pray like we starting to demonst I said the people that you'll find out. I stood up. I said, "We got three men that come in my office." Said that they want me, they want my job. But I said, "Let's make a deal right now. I'm gonna preach this book whether you like it or not. I'm not scared of anybody. I don't need your job. I build this church with my own money, but I ain't compromising you." Ain't no three men going to come in my what I can and cannot preach. That congregation stood on their feet and clap to those three men walked out. Preach against sin. It doesn't matter whether your piano player is living right or not. Preach against sin. I said preach against sin. Preach hail hot and preach it hotter and turn the furnace up and preach it hotter. Quit being afraid of naming sin by name. If you got convictions that you want your church to live by, for God's sake, preach them. Thank you for allowing me to be revival. I say to you, there will be an out have never seek the Lord. Call upon his name for he is very near. God bless you. Praise God. There's no need like this to walk out of here like nothing happened. I wonder if I could be joined at this altar by some pastors, pastor's wives and some other preachers and their wives. And by coming standing here, you are saying for the remainder of 1996, I am going to leave the congregation that God has called you to. through some called prayer meetings pushing the plate away to some radical things seeking the face of God because I'm tired of saying I want it and not getting it. because I'm too weak need maybe even spineless to step out
and pay the price by coming. You're making a commitment not to me but to yourself and to God. I am going to call some weekend prayer chains. If I have to pray three or four hours of the prayer chain myself and I'm just throwing some examples out here. You know what your what will fit in your congregation. You know what will fit in your in your in your schedule. But you may have to change your schedule. Are you willing to change your lifestyle? Revival demands change from the top to the bottom.
