Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

A damaged opening, and the hedge of prayer

  • The segment's first half-minute survives only as splice fragments — children wanting to stay around his table, and no one wanting to work — then Cornwell is mid-flow: "I can tell you worse things about my family" than anything said about yours.
  • His first text is Job 1:5: Job sanctified his children, rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all — "thus did Job continually." And Satan's complaint to God about Job: hast Thou not made a hedge about him and about his house? The hedge was there because there was a daddy called Job who got up every morning and prayed it there. "I'm going to pray a hedge about this family." Daddies have got to pray, mothers have got to pray, and parents are to leave their kids alone to God's help and just do what is right.

Scriptures: Job 1:5

The law of the house

  • Abraham: "in Genesis 18 and 19" — for I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord. Every parent has a right to know what is going on.
  • Then the sermon's refrain, out of Ezekiel: "this is the law of the house" — again, "behold, this is the law of the house." Every house has got to have a law and a rule: there has to be a curfew; there have to be dating rules. Too many parents leave it up to the preacher to make all the rules and make villains of preachers — "brother Morton's going to get you; I'm going to tell brother Mort on you" (name as captioned).
  • And a house is not only rules: joy, peace, and happiness too. Every house is going to have a storm — fusses today, disagreements, daddy facing off with daughter and with sons — and condemnation over a problem kid is misplaced; if a daddy will live right and do right, care and love, it will be a momentary thing, and there will be love and respect there.
  • The section's other house sayings are quoted with Proverbs named as their book only (the curse of the Lord in the house of the wicked, against the blessing on the habitation of the just; wisdom building her house) and are not indexed as references.

Scriptures: Genesis 18:19; Ezekiel 43:12

You never finish raising kids

  • He prays for wisdom and understanding to build this house. The parents anxious for their kids to marry and move out are warned what comes next: grandkids, and feeling more responsible than ever — raising kids is a job you never get finished at.
  • His deathbed resolve: if he were dying tonight, he would not be calling on God (he has already called on Him; that is fixed) and would not be calling in the saints — he would be calling his kids and his grandkids in, to lay his hand on their heads and tell them, "I want you to come where I'm at."
  • "You say, brother M—, what about reaching the world? I've spent my life reaching the world, but I can't be reaching out there and let this right here go to hell." Do not drop the bus ministry or the teaching — make it a family affair; make church fun, not a bunch of rules. The wise woman buildeth her house, but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands (quoted without a named source).

Keepers at home, and the virtuous woman

  • 1 Timothy 5:14: I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house. His application presses mothers toward home: young men to get rid of some of their toys so their wives do not have to work to pay for them; the credit cards sent in the mail; better to live in a little shanty with mama home with the young ones than the thousand-dollar-a-month house where both parents work and the babysitters raise the kids — with his own stated concession that some situations cannot be helped and he cannot balance it all out tonight.
  • In Titus chapter 2: the aged women to behave as becometh holiness, teachers of good things, that they may teach the younger women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, and obedient to their own husbands. "I'm preaching the Bible tonight."
  • Then the virtuous woman, quoted at length and without any source named: who can find one, for her price is far above rubies; the heart of her husband safely trusts in her; she will do him good and not evil all the days of her life; she opens her mouth with wisdom and looks well to the ways of her household; her children rise up and call her blessed, and her husband praises her; favour is deceitful and beauty vain, but a woman that feareth the Lord shall be praised. A good woman, a Pentecostal woman, a good wife and mother building a godly Pentecostal home — there is nothing like one.

Scriptures: 1 Timothy 5:14; Titus 2:3-5

Faithful men, and the man who troubled his own house

  • The other side: there is nothing like a sorry man — a man who will not get up and go to work, fathers who need to do their best to get off welfare, because the reason some Pentecostal women have had to take the role is because the man failed. We cannot be afraid to preach it.
  • From Titus he quotes the aged men's part: sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, and in patience. From Ephesians (book only — not indexed): husbands, love your wives even as Christ loved the church and gave himself for it; some men do not treat their wives as God would have it.
  • Hebrews 3:2: Moses was faithful in his house — there is nothing like a faithful man. Then Proverbs again by book only (confidence in an unfaithful man is a broken tooth and a foot out of joint; he that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind) — and the second saying's story told whole: in the Book of Joshua, chapter 7, Achan took the Babylonish garment, the silver, and the gold and hid them in his tent, and his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his sheep, his tent, and all that he had were stoned and burned in the valley. Achan took his whole family to hell because he loved silver and gold.
  • Job chapter 8: the hypocrite shall lean upon his house, but it shall not stand. Against that, the unnamed line: the house of the righteous shall stand — and his own confidence tonight, that if he really needs them, his family is going to be there.

Scriptures: Titus 2:2; Hebrews 3:2; Joshua 7; Job 8

Raised on this rock, and the close

  • He retells brother John Runner's story from the youth camp at "donkey Rock" (names and place forms in this stretch stand exactly as captioned): two and a half hours from Fresno, up in the boonies, a place Runner discovered years ago and the area's churches have memories at. This year Runner was asked to tell the camp how he discovered it; his son-in-law was preaching the camp, his daughter and his other children there — all grown but the youngest, who is almost grown — and Runner's line, as Cornwell quotes it: "brother Morton, I've raised my kids on this rock," and his children are living for God. (The telling is Cornwell's throughout; nothing in it is attributed beyond his narration.)
  • Cornwell takes the sentence for himself: "I raised my kids on this rock." One day he will be an old man coming up these steps, and he wants his kids to hear what is preached here and his grandkids raised here — children's church on Friday night: 53 received the Holy Ghost, 111 in all. Churches need to put great emphasis on baby dedication, on all our kids — preachers' kids and saints' kids — and help one another with them instead of being touchy about them.
  • His own test of it: his youngest grandson (the name is redacted in the cleaned text — see the packet), woken half-asleep and asked what he is going to remember his Papa for when he is gone: "I'm going to remember that you always meant what you said."
  • He closes standing in worship — "let's raise our hands and Worship the Lord" — and the congregation sings its way out (bind us together, Lord) to the end of the segment. The channel's outro line after it is not part of the sermon.
