Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

Exceeding Abundantly Above All We Ask or Think

  • She opens by affirming that the Lord is gracious, kind, compassionate, and faithful, and that the great God of the universe knows each person personally and knows what they have need of.
  • She reads her text, Ephesians 3:20, first from the King James Version and then from the English Standard Version: God is able to do exceeding abundantly, far more abundantly, above all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us.
  • She leads the congregation in glorifying God with the following verse's doxology — unto Him be glory in the church by Jesus Christ throughout all ages, world without end.
  • She announces her title, “Out of the Box,” saying she will preach or teach, whatever it comes out being.

Scriptures: Ephesians 3:20

With God, Nothing Is Impossible

  • Reading through the Gospel of John, she noticed a pattern: people came expecting or asking for one thing, and God did exceeding abundantly far above all they were thinking — He can do above what we can ask because He can do beyond what we can think.
  • Moses would never have asked God to part the Red Sea so they could walk through on dry ground, because it had never been done; it was above what he could even think to ask.
  • Luke 1:37 declares that with God nothing will be impossible, spoken in the context of Jesus being born through a virgin; as Brother Wayne Huntley turns it, for God to do nothing would be impossible — He is able to do something in every circumstance handed to Him.
  • The camel-and-needle saying appears across the Gospels: Matthew 19:26 says with men this is impossible but with God all things are possible; Mark says it a little differently, that with men it is impossible but not with God; Luke 18 records that the things which are impossible with men are possible with God.
  • This is especially true of salvation: anyone being prayed for is not an impossible case, for with God all things are possible.
  • The feeling of impossibility can cause hopelessness, despair, and mental fatigue as the mind keeps worrying at how to take the next step, but what is impossible with men is possible with God.

Scriptures: Luke 1:37; Matthew 19; Matthew 19:26; Mark (book-only, as spoken); Luke 18

God Cannot Be Contained

  • Even death has been conquered: God raised Lazarus, and Jesus rose Himself, so Easter proves God cannot be contained — seal Him in a tomb of impenetrable stone and His power is still bigger than the tomb and bigger than the box of our situation.
  • Paul preached on Mars Hill in Acts 17 that the God who made the world and all things in it, seeing He is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; He cannot be confined to something man can conjure up or build.
  • Solomon said the same, as recalled in Acts 7: heaven and earth cannot contain God — how much less a temple built for Him.
  • She illustrates with a leftover work box for the sermon: a four-year-old told her God cannot be put in a box, because He lives up there with the sun.
  • Yet we sometimes unknowingly box God in, setting limits on what He can do in our circumstances and on how He can use us, through certain expectations, preferences, and past experiences.

Scriptures: Acts 17; Acts 7

The Box of Past Experience and Tradition

  • The first box is past experience, or tradition. At the pool of Bethesda in John 5:1-9, an angel would trouble the water and whoever stepped in first was healed — a supernatural work of God that became a tradition people relied on and expected.
  • A certain man there had an infirmity for thirty-eight years; when Jesus asked him, “Do you want to be made well,” he answered with his box: he had no man to put him into the pool when the water was stirred, and while he was coming, another stepped down before him.
  • His previous experience had taught him healing could only come one way, at a certain time, when certain conditions were met — a limited perspective that boxed in what God was able to do.
  • We box God in the same way when we decide where, when, and how God moves because that is where or how it has been done before; COVID busted that box, and God met people in their homes and in their cars — what is experienced in church can be experienced absolutely anywhere.
  • Past experiences are good for building faith and showing that God can do it, but they must not limit how God works now or in the future.
  • Jesus said to the man, “Rise, take up your bed and walk,” and immediately the man was made well; God did not have to wait for an angel to trouble the waters, for a Sunday, or for song service to end.
  • The Jews then showed their own box, objecting that it was the Sabbath and not lawful to carry the bed; God is not limited to a permitted day or a proper setting, so take the limits off faith.
  • The box of past experience also limits how God can use us — “I've never done that before” — but Mary had no one's example to follow either, and she answered, “Be it unto me according to your word.”

Scriptures: John 5:1-9

The Box of Preference: Affliction That Forms Us

  • The second box is preference, considered through suffering and affliction: nobody prefers pain, grief, or anguish, and nobody prays asking to be afflicted.
  • Psalm 119:71 says, “It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I might learn thy statutes” — affliction reminds us of our dependence on God, which we can forget when everything is going well and we think we have it handled.
  • Exodus 1:12 shows the people of God under affliction from the egyptians: the more they were afflicted, the more they multiplied and grew, so growth and development are possible in the time of affliction.
  • God is sovereign and in control; the chaos, the affliction, the grief, and the enemy are not in control of us or of the circumstance.
  • Affliction and suffering poke holes in us and wound us, but the glory and Spirit of God flow through those holes; Christ is formed in us through travail and groaning, and God does not waste our pain.
  • The night her uncle Roy Lee was severely ill and probably would not make it through the night, she prayed believing God was able to raise him up, yet felt God would instead show her His faithfulness day by day in grief — she would have preferred the miraculous healing, but God showed grace to meet her day after day.
  • We must prefer God getting the glory over our comfort, praying as Jesus prayed in Gethsemane: not my will, but Thine be done.

Scriptures: Psalms 119:71; Exodus 1:12

The Box of Expectation: Lift My Eyes

  • The third box is expectation: we pray having already decided the specific things we expect God to do, in a particular way, at a particular time, and in a particular manner.
  • She began praying, “Lift my eyes off of my expectation to see what You are already doing” — God is already at work in the circumstance, the family, the job situation, and the housing situation, and staring at the expected answer makes us miss His day-by-day faithfulness.
  • When God doesn't perform according to our agenda, we can form a false view of Him and begin to believe He doesn't love us or care about us — lies she says she has lived herself.
  • Under this year's focus on being the church, she calls the congregation to take God out of the boxes of past experience, preference, and expectation, and simply expect Him to move — and to be part of it — rather than expecting Him to move in a certain way.
  • God can answer outside the prepared box: the doctor she had hoped would be saved as a sign through Roy's healing received the baptism of the Holy Ghost in a service anyway, and Brother Steve Cannon's vision of one million children receiving the baptism of the Holy Ghost is already unfolding, with 349 children having received the Holy Ghost in soc and children's rallies so far this year.

the song is absolutely true that the lord is all of those things that were talked about in that first verse the lord is gracious he is kind he is compassionate he is faithful to us and we are certainly blessed to know him and to be known by him that he knows us wow the the great big god of the universe that he knows each of us personally that he knows what we have need of and that he's caring and concerned about those things what a what a blessed people we are to have a god that we know and that knows us i'm so thankful for him tonight and thankful for the opportunity to be in his house with all of you i want to direct your attention to ephesians chapter 3 and verse 20 that's where i'll draw my focus verse pastor needs his bible you're welcome he thought he was preached no he didn't he's gonna try to sneak a preach i have a feeling just kidding he loves to hear me preach so he wouldn't do that all right we are going to look at ephesians chapter 3 and verse 20 from the king james version it says you all know this now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above i love that he gave so many descriptors there paul he was a worthy guy anyway but exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that worketh in us the esv the english standard version says it like this now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think according to the power at work within us do you know that's the god that you serve the one who is able to do it exceeding abundantly above all that i could ever conjure up in my mind all that i could ever think of all that i could ever plan he is able to do exceeding abundantly above all and the next verse says to give him glory so can we do that together right now lord we glorify you unto you be the glory in the church by jesus christ throughout all ages world without end and god we give you praise lord we recognize who we're in the presence of tonight and we thank you lord we thank you jesus thank you jesus thank you jesus and for the next few moments i'm just going to preach teach whatever it comes out being titled out of the box out of the box and you can be seated tonight if you'll help me out of the box

a couple of weeks ago i was praying and this this thought just kind of hit me i think somebody has said it recently in one of our services as well since then and my mind just caught on to it because as i was reading through the gospel of john i noticed how every um every story almost in the gospel of john there is this they came expecting one thing or they came asking for one thing and god just one upped it well not one he like one millionth upped it right he just did exceeding abundantly far above all that they were thinking about and this verse i've heard one of my favorite preachers uh brother mike williams preached from this verse and his tagline he can do god can do above what we can ask because he can do beyond what we can think so he can always do above what we ask because he's always thinking way beyond what we're able to think of and i think of moses and the red sea i don't think moses would have asked it had never been done before i don't think moses would have asked god if you just take us by the reds and then if you would just part it and we could walk through on dry ground that would be just awesome god why didn't he ask that why didn't he pray that it was above what he could even think now that it's happened to him we of course think it and maybe some of you illinoisians pray it about the mississippi river but it just you know we would have never thought of that beforehand the mississippi or moses would never have thought about asking for because it was just so much farther further above what he could possibly imagine but it lets us know that anything is possible with god and i'm thankful that i'm in a church that believes that anything is possible with god luke chapter 1 verse 37 tells us this says for with god nothing will be impossible this is in the context of the story of jesus going to be born through a virgin woman anything is possible with god with god nothing will be impossible another one of my favorite preachers brother wayne huntley says about this verse that says for with god nothing will be impossible he kind of twisted it up a little bit and said for god to do nothing would be impossible he's able to do something in absolutely every circumstance in absolutely every context whatever details he is handed whatever mess or chaos is handed to him god is able to do something with it for him to do nothing would be absolutely impossible and so in your situation whatever looks insurmountable whatever looks exceeding abundantly above your ability know that you are serving a god for whom nothing is impossible it is impossible for him to be caught thinking oh what do i do now because anything is possible with our god matthew chapter 19 this is actually mentioned in all four of the gospels this particular passage of scripture they they're coming to him and there's that this is the part where they had said it's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to be saved and so they were talking about salvation they were talking about a couple of different things there and all three uh matthew mark and luke say this and it's in matthew 19 26 first with men this is impossible but with god all things are possible with god all things are possible mark says it a little bit different he says with men it is impossible but not with god for with god all things are possible i love that this is particularly in the context of salvation because anybody that you're praying for it's not impossible for with god all things are possible and then luke chapter 18 records this same story and luke says it this way the things which are impossible with men or humanity are possible with god so that just lets us know it's just reiterating what paul has said in ephesians 3 20 it's reiterating what matthew and mark have said what luke said or what mary said or what was said to mary rather about god for with god all things are possible when it looks impossible to us we can maybe throw up our hands a little bit and be like i got nothing else i can do nothing else and and doesn't that feeling of impossibility that that feeling of not being able to take it a step further that sometimes feels frustrating to us it can cause hopelessness it can cause despair it can just leave us in a mental fog and a mental fatigue even because we're our brains are worrying trying to figure out how to do it next the things which are impossible with men are possible with god all things are possible with god

even even to the resurrection of the dead now we know he did this with lazarus but jesus resurrected him own self so there is absolutely nothing when you figure probably death is the number one thing that everybody fears sometimes it's public speaking not for me but for sometimes it's public speaking but the number one thing that most people fear is death and when you understand that god even conquered that it just leaves us with full of hope that you know what anything else that i face god is able to god's able to do anything because he conquered even death and we just celebrated easter but easter tells me that god cannot be contained because anything is possible confine him however you want to put him in a tomb of stone impenetrable stone you can even seal it for good measure you just try to box god in is what i love about the easter story you just try to contain our god in the in the way that you would be able to contain a human in the way that you would be able to contain me you can't contain my god his power is bigger than that tomb his power is bigger than the box of your chaos in the box of your situation tonight we cannot box god in his power is limitless all things are possible with him

paul was preaching on mars hill in acts chapter 17 and he said god that made the world and all things therein seeing that he is lord of heaven and earth dwelleth not in temples made with hands he does not live in temples made by humanity he cannot be confined to something that man can conjure up or build he's far too big for that

brother brian would you get me that box right there i had brother brad leave one of the boxes that we've been having some work going on in here and i asked him to leave me one of these boxes and it was back there and [name redacted] was like what are you gonna do with that box right there is great thank you so much you could have acted like it was real heavy you know and showing off some masculine prowess okay just making sure he said what are you gonna do with that box and i said i'm gonna be preaching how we can't keep god in a box we can't put god in a box and he said he looked at me and he's like no we can't he lives up there with the sun and i knew i was going to read this verse but in the context of what paul has already been saying even back to acts chapter 7 it says heaven and earth cannot contain him how much less solomon said this about the temple how much less this temple that i have built for you even [name redacted] how old four understands you can't put god in a box he's too big for this box he's too big he's he's the lord of the heavens and he's the lord of the earth and so i can't contain him in his power inside of this little box or any size box that i would try to make he cannot be contained within what humanity can build and what humanity can conjure up yet sometimes unknowingly perhaps we box god in and we set limits on him we set limits on what he can do in and with my circumstance and we set limits on how he can use us because he does want to use every single individual every person god has a plan for you and through you he wants to move through you to those that you come in contact with and sometimes we can set limits and parameters and try to box god in to a certain way of doing it to some certain expectations to some certain preferences that we may have or to some certain past experiences that we have had but i'm here declaring again to you tonight something that you already know but anything is possible with god when it comes to your circumstance and when it comes to him using you for his glory anything is possible let him out of the box take the lid off of your faith and allow it to just explode because he can do exceeding abundantly what we ask or think i have another box that's going to be a little bit easier for me to carry around as an illustration than this monstrosity so i'm just going to set this up here for effect and whenever i need something to grab on to the first box i want to talk i'm going to talk about three hopefully um but i'll cut it short if i don't have time but

the first box is the box of past experience or tradition you might say john chapter five verses one through nine tell us the story of the uh the pool of bethesda you know the angel would come down and trouble the water and that the first one in would get healed and i was reading this the other day and it caught my attention that's kind of actually where the sermon title came out of because it's what i literally wrote in my journal but jesus went to going up to jerusalem and at the sheep gate there is a pool which in hebrew is called bethesda and has five porches and in these verse three says lay a great multitude of sick people blind lame paralyzed waiting for the moving of the water for an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water then whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was made well of whatever disease he had this is a supernatural occurrence here i mean they weren't just able to do this magic on their own this this was god doing this sending a a messenger of healing one of his angels to stir the water and when that water was stirred the first one in was healed and cured this is a miracle supernatural this wasn't just something that man was doing it was a supernatural and it become kind of a tradition if you will it becomes something that they relied on that they expected and so this man a certain man was there in verse five who had an infirmity 38 years i'm going to choose my words carefully and not say that's a long time because that's how old i am but um rather than offend myself i will just say for 38 years now i can say it this way to be sick to be in a a situation where there's something wrong that is a long time five days would be a long time right what kovid lasts like 10 14 days it felt like a year and a half when i had it okay so time is relative i understand but 38 years this man had been ill he had been sick we don't know exactly we do know that jesus told him to take up his bed and walk so he was lame in some capacity were not able to rise and walk on his own naturally so when jesus saw him lying there and he knew that he had already been in that condition a long time jesus said to him do you want to be made well and the sick man answered him sir i have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up but while i am coming another steps down before me the man is telling us what kind of box he has god in by telling us when jesus asked do you want to be made well he said i'm just going to paraphrase of course i want to be healed but the box says i've got to get in at a certain time on a certain day and there's certain conditions that have to be met in order for me to be healed and i just can't do that here he is telling jesus who is the god of the universe he's telling him i can't be healed because these conditions can't be met because the box i i just this is the box and this is just how it is and i'm i'm unable i want to be healed but i've seen how this works and my previous experience has taught me that if i'm not in the pool first then i won't be healed the tradition is that you show up on a certain day at a particular time and if you're the first one in you get healed and so i've seen how it works for other people and i can't do what other people have done so i can't be healed

and so the sick man is believing that his only way to be healed was when the water was stirred he had a limited perspective based on a previous experience and it was boxing god in it was boxing in what god was able to do it was boxing god into what this man had seen god do before had seen god do in a previous experience and according to perhaps a tradition or a structure a certain structure and here's here's how we do this we put god in a box when we think in these kinds of terms well this is where or when god moves this is where we can pray worship or experience god's power his glory and his spirit because that's where or how or when it's been done before and so we box god into a previous experience and then kovid comes along and god uses covid to just absolutely bust that box and we experienced god in our homes like we never have before we experienced god in our cars because we couldn't come to the box and i'm glad we get to come now don't leave here saying that i wish we didn't have church because i'm glad we're here but what i want us to leave understanding is that what we experience here we can experience absolutely anywhere we don't have to box god into these four walls this box because he's able to deliver when you pray at walmart he's able to heal when you pray in a waiting room he's able to meet you in a garage he's able to meet you in your front yard or your backyard we can't box god into a previous experience and we've had some great experiences here in this box but he's able to do things beyond because he can do exceeding abundantly above what we ask or what we even think so don't let yourself get boxed in to where or how what god wants to do something based on a past experience past experiences are good for building our faith and showing us god can do it and i think we should remember the past experiences but don't let those limit how god works right now or how god wants to work in the future because god can't be boxed in he dwells not in things that are made by man's hands and so don't box him in to a particular day particular a particular set of circumstances that look just right

jesus said to the sick man rise take up your bed and walk and immediately verse 9 says immediately the man was made well he took up his bed and he walked god did a miracle he was thinking it could only be done one way but when god showed up and he said do you want to be made well and he could hear the man's desperation in the man's faith he said you know what you've limited me to a box but i'm going to show you i'm much bigger than the box of this pool of bethesda i don't have to wait for an angel to trouble the waters i don't have to wait for a sunday i don't have to wait for pastor to preach i don't have to wait for song service to be over i can go ahead and get my miracle right now because god is not a god that lives in human boxes take up he took up his bed and he walked and that day was the sabbath

oh boy verse 10 the jews therefore said to him who was cured the man who is now gotten his miracle he's trying to go home happy and here's these jews all worked up over the fact that jesus did it on the wrong day they said it's the sabbath it's not lawful for you to carry your bed it's lawful if jesus told you to that's what i would have said probably not but i might have thunk it the jews are now showing us their box jesus you did this on a day that's not permitted by our tradition you did this on the wrong day you can't do that on this day we can't have a move of god somebody get healed or somebody get the holy ghost on a wednesday you can't do that while i'm sitting in my car over the phone praying with my spouse or my children or my aunt my uncle my friend you can't do it that day i gotta be here there's gonna be an altar call and there's gotta be a there's a box god doesn't dwell he doesn't fit in human boxes so take the limit off of your faith take the limit off of it having to be here and having to be a certain person and having to be i've got to have spoken in tongues at least 40 times today no god is not limited to the human box he's not limited to your condition or the condition around you he is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we would ask or think god doesn't fit in human boxes so loose him and let him work on any day in any context at any time at any location

and we found this out with covid sister michelle is here somewhere i saw her right there your mom got the holy ghost was your mom no it was your sis your mom got the holy ghost watching one of our services online at home watching it through a video monitor or computer screen or a phone god you can't you can't do it that way god box crushed box demolished because god is able to do exceeding abundantly above so let's take the limits off of him let's let him get out of the box that we've put him in the box of our past experiences how we've seen it done before how we've been used before oh god i've never done that before i've never you know i've sang in the choir i've sang on the praise team i've greeted but i've never whatever it is i've never invited a co-worker to go to coffee with me talk about jesus i've never taught a bible study i've never participated or led a small group i just can't do what i've never done before that's putting god in a box that's limiting him to do through you what he's already done before through you or what you've seen him do through somebody else because sometimes we limit him well god i've never seen anybody do that

i'll just have you sit down with mary the mother of jesus nobody had ever no woman had ever no man either but had ever given birth as a virgin she didn't have anybody to look around her and say okay if they did it i can do it i'm going to follow her lee i'm going to do what she's she was the first one y'all what if you're the first one to do something are you gonna box god in and say well i can't do that i've never seen it done before are you gonna say like mary did be it unto me according to your word i'm gonna be your vessel i'm gonna allow you to work through me and speak through me i'm to give that message in tongues or i'm going to give that interpretation in tongues as i feel you moving upon me i'm going to allow you to do what you want to do i'm going to let you out of the box don't box god in and to how he can use you based on what you've always done or maybe what you've never done because god was never intended to fit in human boxes

the second box is the box of our preference we've talked about the box of our past experience or our tradition but the box of our preference there are a lot of ways that we can try to stuff god into the box of our preferences it could be related to how he uses us who he uses it could be my preference about his timing my preference about how he blesses me or when he blesses me but tonight i'll use the box of preference as it relates to our suffering or our affliction and our trials you may call them storms tribulation whatever name you put on dark times whatever name or label you put on it but in those times in in times when we are afflicted and when we are burdened and when we are going through a hard time we can't you know this we can trust his sovereignty and his control even with our suffering and our affliction i'm not saying it's easier during that time but we during that time we can it is possible for us to do that and if you're like me and maybe you are during times of personal suffering and affliction times dark times valleys storms i would prefer not to be afflicted i mean is anybody just praying every day lord afflict me with whatever you can conjure up up there just bring it on lord it's not how we typically pray um come talk to me afterwards if you are we've got some counselors in the church we can set you up with it's not how we typically approach life we don't prefer to be in pain we don't prefer to lose a loved one we don't prefer grief or or anguish we don't prefer this affliction we prefer not to suffer

but psalms says in 119 verse 71 it is good for me that i have been afflicted that i might learn thy statutes his word his ways his testimony his way of operating it's good for me that i have been afflicted because it's through suffering and affliction that i'm reminded of my dependence upon god because sometimes when life is hunky-dory and everything's going okay i can get this misunderstanding in my mind that i'm able to control how things go and therefore god i got this you can you can actually oh you don't have to get in the box you can just go sit on the box because i've got this when things are going well but when things are not going well we're reminded i'm without hope i i don't have anything that can answer this i don't have any solution that meets this i don't have all of the answers that are being asked of me god i need you and it's incumbent upon us to remember that we need him that we're dependent upon him even in the good times but definitely in the bad times our suffering and our affliction reminds us that we are dependent upon him

and here's how the people of god respond to affliction in exodus chapter 1 verse 12 it says this but the more they the egyptians afflicted them the people of god so the more the egyptians afflicted the people of god is what it says the more they multiplied and grew that lets me know that in my time of affliction in my time of heartache and struggle and strain and trial and testing in that time it is possible for me to grow and to be developed into what god is wanting to do in my life but if i take the box of preference and i say god i prefer not to be afflicted i prefer that you would remove that affliction from me that you would just deliver my loved one that you would just heal my uncle i would prefer if you would do it that way because i i really don't want to go through all of the anguish i really don't want to have to face the days of grief and heartache i would really rather escape and evade that that's the box of our preference but god doesn't live in the box of our preference he's got a much bigger and a much grander story that he is telling and while it may hurt me right now emotionally or mentally it may be hurting me it may be afflicting me it is working for me a far more exceeding eternal weight of glory god is doing something in the trial to me to make me look more like him paul said i travail i groan until christ be formed in you letting us know that there's travail there's groaning there's anguish when christ is being formed in me and he is being formed in me through my afflictions and through my suffering i almost said i wish i could tell you that you could have a struggle free suffer free life but then you would not gain all that we gain by going through what we go through i would prefer to not feel pain but here's what i know god is in control at all times he is sovereign remember i said we can trust his sovereignty he's in control the chaos isn't in control y'all the affliction isn't in control of you the grief is not in control of you the enemy is not in control of you it's not in control of the circumstance your god the one who loves you the one who knows what's best for you the one who wants what's best for you he's the one controlling it so we can trust him and we can say god i would prefer that it not be this way i don't want to hurt but god while i'm hurting i pray that you would work in me everything that you're wanting to work in me that you would help me to look a little more like you do affliction and suffering pokes holes in us they wound us they leave gaping holes but you know what flows through those holes the glory of god the spirit of god flowing through the things that break us and the things that hurt us it's god flowing through that grief it's god flowing through that loss and he's showing us i'm gonna be faithful with you every single day

i told you last time i preached on sunday morning talking about god's goodness i told you about my prayer the night that we knew uncle roy lee was very severely ill probably wouldn't make it through the night and i prayed and i said god i know that you're able to raise him up off of that bed i know that you're able to do that and i just felt in my spirit i it wasn't a word from the lord it wasn't anything like that it was just i just felt it wasn't a lack of faith i don't feel but it was just a feeling that god's not going to heal him but this is what the lord told me in that moment he said i am going to show you how faithful i am day by day by day how faithful i can be in the midst of grief and i thought god i would really prefer for you to show me your miraculous healing power and for him to get up off of that bed and just wow the doctors and nurses and have a testimony that you upci would shout about that's what i would really prefer but he said my preference is that i show you how faithful i will be how much grace i have to meet you day after day after day when the waves of grief just hit out of nowhere i'm going to show you that i'm faithful in that day i'm going to show you that i'm there and i'm with you and that's how he does in our suffering and in our affliction we see the faithfulness of god we see his goodness that he never leaves us and that he never forsakes us because god does not waste our pain he uses it to display himself and to develop me in order for me to look more like him but if we box him into our preferences we have the tendency to prefer to be out of the trouble the storm and the affliction we prefer comfort but often god uses discomfort to develop us into who he created us to be he will use our suffering and our affliction for his purpose if we don't box him in to our preferences here's the reality i must prefer god getting the glory over my comfort and that's difficult to do saying okay god you're not going to answer this the way that i want you to you're not going to do a b c and d you're going to do h i and j and k but if you get the glory this is how jesus prayed it in the garden of not my will but thine be done and god's glory was revealed in the crucified jesus and then in the resurrected jesus because the gethsemane jesus said not my will but thine be done allowing god to use our affliction to perfect us to develop us and to deepen us can only happen if we take him out of the box of our preference

and my final box i'll wrap with this it's a short one the box of our expectation we do this from time to time don't we when we get down to pray and this is this is how i'm expecting you to answer lord this this is what i'm expecting god to do and we've heard we should expect and we should we should expect god to work but it occurred to me a couple of weeks ago after brother peter preached about being convinced he preached what if god wants to do it right now and several of you came to the altar expert i came to the altar expressing faith believing that god could and he can do it right now and so i'm not limiting that i'm not speaking against that we need that we need that right now faith in that right now expectancy but here's where i get off track so i'll talk about me is that i'm saying i'm going to pray for my brother or my sister i'm going to pray for myself and i'm going to pray these specific things that i'm expecting to see god do but what if he's going to do something else and so the the phrase that lept to me left to my mind i began to pray over some of you as i was praying and i wrote it in my journal is lift my eyes off of my expectation to see what you are already doing god is already at work in your circumstance he's already working in your family in your lost loved one you raised your hand a while ago he is already working in that situation he's already working in your job situation in your housing situation he's already working he's already doing something now it may not be the box of our expectation we may be looking for it in a particular way and in a particular time and in a particular manner but my purpose here tonight is just to maybe stir you to say what could you look at that god is already doing that maybe we're ignoring because we're looking at this box so hard and heavy into okay i'm going to focus on this this is what god wants to do this is how he wants to answer and i'm missing everything else around me that god's doing because i'm here on this box and i've got this is my expectation i'm gonna believe i'm gonna take it with me to church i'm gonna pray i'm gonna fast i'm gonna take it with me in the morning i'm gonna expect and i'm just gonna and god's gonna do it this way and he's gonna i'm missing everything that he's doing day by day i'm missing everything else all the other details how he's faithfully providing and how he's just faithfully meeting me day by day that he's not letting me sink into a pit of despair or depression that he's not letting me go too far that he's not left me alone that he's always that i'm missing all that stuff because i'm expecting him to do it a particular way in a particular time stand with me this evening when god doesn't perform according to my agenda it can cause me to get a false view or a false concept of him i can begin to believe a lie or misunderstand him because he didn't do it in my box he didn't he didn't answer this prayer he didn't come through like this so he must not love me he must not care about me i wouldn't be able to stand up here and say these things just off the top of my head these are things that i've lived these are these are ways that i have thought so this is me being very transparent with you god must not love he must not care about me i must not be very important to him if he didn't answer in this boxed in way that i've expected him to answer but ephesians 3 instructs us that he can do exceeding abundantly above all that i can ask or think exceeding abundantly above the box of my expectation and if i'm so intently focused on this expecting to be used in a certain way expecting that god can only use me in a certain way he can only use me to do a certain thing in his kingdom if i'm limiting him to the box of my expectation i'm putting him in a box that he was never intended to be in for the god of heaven and earth dwelleth not in temples or in boxes made by human hands he dwells outside of that he can do far more than you were even thinking or that you were even praying for your loved one or for your situation he's got something far better for you he's got something far better for you and we this year we're focused on being the church in order to be the church that god wants us to be we've got to get him out of the box of our past experience we got to get him out of the box of our preference and we got to get him out of the box of our own expectations and just say you know what god whatever you want to do tonight whatever you want to do on mother's day service whatever you want to do between now and then whatever you want to do on pentecost sunday god we're just going to expect you to move we're not gonna expect you to move in a certain way we're just gonna expect you to move and we're gonna expect that we gotta move too that we gotta be a part of it that's my expectation not god do it a b c and d but god i just know you're gonna do something and i wanna be a part of it i want to do it if you want that i wonder if you would just surrender and submit to him whatever box you've picked up on tonight maybe it's not one of the ones that i've named but maybe it's something else and i pray oh god that you would help us lord we want to be the church that you want us to be oh god we want to believe in others we want to believe in ourselves we want to believe in you that you are able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think i pray that you would remove every box and every barrier and every hindrance and every limitation that we have put on you mentally or emotionally or spiritually i come against it in the name of jesus every deception that the enemy has tried to lie and whisper in our ears that we're not able or that you're not able or that we're boxed in we're closed in you are not a god that was ever intended and designed to live within the confines of human ability or human understanding or human manipulation and so i pray that our faith would skyrocket to know that you can do exceeding abundantly above all would you praise him right now like he's able to do exceeding abundantly above all god we pray lord you're gonna do it lord you're gonna do it hallelujah yes yes yes yes yes yes go ahead let's praise him let's praise him you're worthy god you're worthy lord yes you are yes you are hallelujah hallelujah oh yes hallelujah hallelujah as recent as this past sunday we we have an order there's nothing wrong with that order but we never want to limit god to the box of an order so i doubt that brother michael was through every point of the message but the spirit flowed and a prepared outline will not box god in should it be prepared oh yeah yeah but whatever happens in the middle of a chorus or in the middle of a service or in the middle of a week folks tomorrow's the national day of prayer god can do anything tomorrow he can do anything tomorrow hallelujah hallelujah

the box i would have prepared is god if you will heal roy that will be a sign to his doctor and she will get saved and filled with the holy ghost three sundays ago in the service dr blackburn received the baptism of the holy ghost when she had received it if roy got healed very likely very likely but he said i'll just do it outside of that box and while it may have been a disappointment because they were friends as well as a professional uh relationship they were friends but god can do it and just don't fear to ask him don't fear to ask him our general sunday school director our children's ministry director brother steve cannon has a vision for soc and those funds and all of those rallies and he had a vision he cast it last year just before covet hit for one million children to receive the baptism of the holy ghost it hasn't happened yet but it is going to happen he can do exceedingly abundantly and if he gives somebody a vision he's going to do it in fact this gives me an opportunity to say thank you for your giving to soc so far this year 349 children have received the baptism of the holy ghost in soc rallies and children's rallies people are receiving the holy ghost god can do it anywhere any place anytime you can get your healing right now tonight and online god can relieve that heavy stress and that burden he can do it he can do it right now in the name of the lord he's the god of all deliverance

would you praise him another time wherever you are just praise and god we're not gonna program you we're gonna praise you right now yes oh you're able god i praise your greatness i praise god that you are greater that you are outside of any parameters that humanity can set or limit you thank you jesus thank you jesus
