Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
In His Presence We Find Everything We Need
- The lesson opens in prayer and thanksgiving: in the presence of God we have everything we need, and we do not need to look anywhere else for our answers or our provision.
- That presence is not confined to the church building — it will meet us wherever we are, in the car or at home, and it carries power, safety, and peace.
- The speaker seats the congregation, thanks those who came through the bad weather and those watching online, and greets his sister Leah and his newest nephew Luke, glad the baby got to hear his uncle preach.
- He announces his topic: grace — not something new or mind-blowing, but something heard all our lives, especially by those who have lived for God for any length of time.
Grace Is Not a One-Time Event
- Grace is commonly defined as God giving us something we do not deserve, while mercy is God not giving us something we do deserve, like judgment.
- The speaker agrees with those definitions but believes there is a larger definition at play in Scripture: grace is not confined to the moment God forgave our sins so that we then live on past grace.
- Grace greets us every morning when we wake up, is right beside wherever we lay our head, and follows us through all the events of our lives.
- His simple definition: grace is the present and active working of God in the life of the believer.
- He notes the instinct behind the Catholic sacraments — believers seeking ways for the grace of God to be endowed and active in their lives daily — and loves that instinct even while not agreeing with the ritual and tradition.
- Grace is not just something that happened at conversion or baptism; it is what saves us, and we need to get a hold of it each and every day.
Ephesians: The Beauty and Power of God's Saving Work
- The speaker turns to Paul's letter to the Ephesians, which he reads as more of a general theological tract — a sermon Paul was trying to get out into the world — than a letter tied to one congregation.
- In Ephesians Paul lays out his understanding of the beauty and power of God's salvific work: we are seated in heavenly places, experiencing all the spiritual blessings Christ can give, the richness of God's love and of His mercy.
- If you ever want to be wowed by the thing you get to experience called salvation, read Ephesians — Paul spells it out plainly.
- Chapter 2 of the letter speaks, at least linguistically, specifically about the grace of God — it is where we get the famous words, it is by grace you are saved through faith — and the speaker announces he will walk through it as a Bible study.

You Were, But God, Now You Are: Ephesians 2:1–10
- The speaker reads the passage: we were dead in our transgressions and sins, following the ways of this world and gratifying the cravings of our flesh, and by nature deserving of wrath.
- Then comes Paul's 'but God' moment: because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions — it is by grace we have been saved.
- God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms, and it is by grace we have been saved through faith — not from ourselves, a gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.
- We are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do.
- The outline of Paul's argument is the basic message of transformation by grace: you once were one thing, then God worked — forgiving, washing, helping us live holy — and now you are something else; as Paul says elsewhere, we are a new creation.
- That is our message as the church today: we admit we used to be one thing, God worked, and now we are saved, sitting in this awesome thing called the church.
Scriptures: Ephesians 2; 2 Corinthians 5:17
Grace Has a Name and a Face: Jesus Christ
- God did not raise us up to live a barely alive existence on a pew; He made us alive and raised us up in order that in the coming ages He might show the incomparable riches of His grace, expressed in His kindness to us in Christ Jesus.
- Grace therefore has a name and a face: the expressed grace of God was a person. If you need a picture of what grace looks like, you do not need to look any further than Jesus.
- As Paul says in Philippians, He emptied Himself of all His divine prerogatives, glory, and majesty, made Himself of no reputation, took on the form of a bondservant, and humbled Himself to death — even the death of the cross, the worst and most despised death of that age.
- If God was willing to go that far, there is no distance He will not traverse to let us experience His grace, and He is going to keep showing it from age to age to age.
- The gift is not limited to the crucifixion and resurrection: the gift is the all-of-eternity love we will feel, as God pours out His love on us forever — and we did nothing to earn it.
Scriptures: Philippians (book-only, as spoken)
The Church Is Before the Church Does
- Before the church can ever do anything, the church must be something — and what it is, at its foundation, is a group of individuals all over the world who have been redeemed by the grace of God.
- We are not only redeemed by grace at one moment but sustained by it every day: every first breath in the morning, every joy, and even every sorrow we make it through is the grace of God.
- A professor put it as a process: the church is a group of people saved by grace, and then the church does what it is.
- So whatever program or method we use, our mission is to call people into the same experience of grace that we ourselves have experienced.
One New Humanity: God's Whole Purpose Was the Church
- Paul repeats the pattern in Ephesians 2:11–22: the Gentiles were formerly separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel, foreigners to the covenants of promise, without hope and without God in the world.
- But now in Christ Jesus, those who were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ, for He Himself is our peace, who made the two groups one and destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility.
- His purpose was to create in Himself one new humanity out of the two — the church, made up of every tribe and tongue and people — and to reconcile both to God through the cross.
- Consequently we are no longer foreigners and strangers but fellow citizens with God's people and members of His household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets with Christ Jesus as the chief cornerstone, the whole building joined together and rising to become a holy temple — a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit.
- Even the cross itself was aimed at this: as we read in Hebrews, He endured the cross and despised the shame for the joy that was set before Him — and that joy was the church, you and I experiencing the grace of God.
- We are important to God: we are the focus, the climax, the reason and the purpose for all He has been doing throughout the ages, and He is still pouring out His grace on us right now.
Scriptures: Hebrews (book-only, as spoken)
Live a Life Worthy of the Calling
- The elders' old phrase turns out to be true: everything we do is by the grace of God — everything we accomplish as the church — and the speaker apologizes for ever making fun of it.
- In chapter 4 Paul turns the argument: as a prisoner of the Lord, he urges us to live a life worthy of the calling we have received.
- Once we really realize God's intentions for our lives, even through eternity, nothing He asks seems too big, an inconvenience, or a burden — the cry becomes: God, help us walk worthy; we cannot do it by our own measures, standards, or wisdom.
- Walking worthy includes holy living and turning our backs on sin, and it includes the mission built into our creation: we are God's handiwork, created to do good works, devoting all our energies and affection to building up the church.
- The lesson closes with prayer — thanking God for the grace we get to experience, asking Him to help us walk worthy and to let us experience His grace afresh, whether in the room or watching online.
- The final charge: somebody we will be in contact with in the next few days needs to hear that the grace of God is for them — God hasn't given up, and the church is not going to give up.

let's continue in that thanks today lord we thank you we thank you that in your presence we have everything that we need we don't need to look anywhere else except your presence jesus we're thankful for that god we are so thankful for that thank you jesus you know uh i like learning stuff that's the simplest way to say that i spend a lot of time and money uh reading books i like learning stuff and when you look out into the world all the stuff that could be learned all the books that could be read all of the arguments that could be heard they're pretty much
innumerable can i get an amen from anybody else that likes books they're pretty much innumerable there's a lot of arguments and and sometimes i struggle with a little bit of uh reading adhd i'm like well i read this i think i got enough of that maybe to survive i don't know why i have to know how to raise goats but i do now we're going to be all right so i'm going to go over here and learn something else about this subject and i try to compile all this information because i feel like i have to know it there's there's a stress in me i
have to know stuff and if i don't i get stressed but i'm so very thankful that for the life of the christian there's really only one thing that we need to know and that's that in the presence of god in his holy presence that we feel in this room tonight that's where we find all the answers to our questions that's where we find all the provision for our needs i'm thankful i don't have to go to a lot of different sources i'm thankful i don't have to read a lot of different books all i have to do all we have to do is get in
the presence of this holy god and somehow all of a sudden everything begins to work out we only have one thing that we really need to know and that is that this presence of god is where we find our answers and that this presence of god is always available anywhere you are it doesn't have to be in this building it can be in your car your house that presence will meet you wherever you are if anybody's thankful for that presence again i i think it's i think it's appropriate to begin to praise him again thank him again lord thank you for this presence in this
presence we find all our answers we we find all our provision jesus and more than that it it doesn't just stay here it's not confined to this building but lord can follow me wherever i'm at in my life jesus i'm thankful for your presence i'm thankful for the power and the safety and the peace that is in that presence jesus thank you for it god tell me to never get tired of it jesus and always rely on it jesus help us thank you lord thank you lord amen and amen isn't his presence awesome isn't it awesome terrible weather outside but a great presence in here
thankful for that i'm going to let you all be seated here at the outset i'm not going to read a scripture at the start but i will be reading quite a lot of scripture thank you brother eric in the back for that for all of the individuals that weathered the storm quite literally and for all that are watching online thank you for being here we're thankful uh we're glad that you're here to share in this presence of god that we feel together i also want to give a shout out real quick before i start my newest nephew is in the house with this is a
lesser mention it's just my sister leah but my newest nephew is in the house and i'm thankful that she both my sister and luke my newest nephew is here it's exciting that even though he'll will never remember this day when he was a baby he got to hear his uncle preach so i'm thankful for that so with that aside uh we'll move into to what i want to speak about i i have the honor the privilege i believe to speak about a topic that i'm really excited to speak about and it's not mind-blowing it's not anything new it's something we've heard uh all of our
life it's something that we're very familiar with especially if you've been living for god for any amount of time and that topic that that concept is grace and talk about grace and grace is is interesting i i've heard grace talked about in many different ways i've heard somebody say that grace is god giving us something that we don't deserve has anyone ever heard that description grace is god giving us something that we don't deserve and then they try to distinguish between grace and mercy and they say mercy is god not giving us something that we do deserve like judgment when my parents showed mercy from
giving me correction whenever i was misbehaving that's mercy because i probably deserved a whoopin or two but them randomly giving me some childhood toy that i loved that i did not deserve maybe after a weapon i don't know that is grace and while i certainly agree with those definitions i agree that that grace is certainly god granting us a gift that we do not deserve i believe there is a larger definition at play in scripture of what grace is and what it means to have grace present in your life and i i believe and you will find out through my reading of a larger portion
of scripture that i think i can back it up scripturally and and my my basic idea is this i believe that grace is not a one-time event i believe that grace is not just confined to the idea that god forgave you once he forgave your sins and now you can go about your life trying to get it right living on past grace i i believe that grace is something that greets us every morning when we wake up i believe grace is something that is right by wherever we lay down our head i believe grace goes with us throughout all of the different events of our
life i i believe grace follows us and if i had a simple definition i i think grace is the present and active working of god in the life of the believer our our catholic friends while we certainly don't agree with the ritual and and the tradition and some of the practices they go along with they they have a very uh unique idea of grace that i happen to agree with in part with the principle they they believe in something called the sacraments and there's a lot of different sacraments marriage is one so i participated thank you my catholic friends marriage is a sacrament the eucharist
the lord's supper communion is a sacrament baptism is sacrament there's a few others but the point that i agree with is that they not necessarily agree with but the principle they say that these sacraments are a way for the grace of god to be endowed to the believer that when when in their case when an infant is baptized the grace of god is endowed to a believer now we don't believe in infant baptism but stay with me okay they believe when you take communion when you take the lord's supper in taking that bread and drinking that juice the grace of god is imparted into your
life and the grace of god is the thing that saves you so ultimately these sacraments because they embody the grace of god they save you and we don't always agree with that but i like the instinct that they have and that is throughout all parts of their life even daily they are trying to find ways to get the grace of god active in their life yeah we don't agree with the ritual yeah we don't agree with some of the the tradition yeah we're we're protestants we're protestants as i like to say we don't agree with it but i love that instinct grace isn't just something
that happened to me when i received the holy ghost grace isn't just something that happens to me whenever i was converted or i was baptized grace is something that i'm trying to get a hold of each and every day in my life because i need the grace of god because it is what saves me it is what saves you it is the way salvation this grace of god and i believe i i i can prove this wider definition of grace that i'm trying to talk about through ephesians paul writes in ephesians he he writes what i believe is a it says it's written to the
ephesians i think it was more maybe a general letter a lot of new testament letters circulated but i think this one it seems based on the general nature there's not many specific mentions of people or or churches like and paul's others let other letters but i think it's a general uh tract theological tract it's a general sermon that paul's trying to get out into the world and and if we look at some of the earlier manuscripts of ephesus those that are interested in textual criticism just me and brother cardin okay when we look at these older manuscripts uh some of this the labeling of this
letter being specifically written just to ephesus is actually missing it just says to all of god's holy people but ephesus was tagged on to it in the early church i believe because paul probably wrote him at ephesus while he was in prison i know scholars argue about that maybe me and brother carter have a conversation later but that's what i believe so i think that's why ephesus is tagged on but in with that aside in the book of ephesians paul lays out this his understanding of the beauty and power of god's salvific work in the world he lays it out he says we're seated in
heavenly places where we experience all the spiritual blessings that christ can give us we get to experience the richness of god's love the richness of his mercy how wonderful is the salvation that we get to experience i'm going to read some of this in a little bit and then he goes into now there's some things we have to do but ephesians is beautiful if you ever want to be wowed by the thing that you get to experience called salvation read ephesians he spells it out plainly and specifically in chapter 2 he speaks at least linguistically specifically about grace all of chapter 2 has something to
do with the grace of god this is where we get the famous uh it is by grace you are saved through faith and i want to read some of this i want to walk us through this this is a bible study if that's all right this is just we're going to walk through scripture and i'm going to get excited about certain verses that's what this is okay so paul writes in chapter two it's starting in verse one he says as for you you were dead in your transgressions and sins in which you used to live and just a heads up i will be using the
niv tonight just because i like some of the wording i say this whenever i use the niv if if there's some textual problems that people have an issue with we do have a textual expert in the room he'll uh come snag me if something's wrong with the niv why don't you brother carton you come get me right yeah all right i got a little half nod we'll take it so i'm going to use the niv because i like some of the wording it helps us understand certain parts of this that i want to highlight it says as for you you were dead in your transgressions
and sins in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air the spirit who is now at work and those who are disobedient all of us also lived among them at one time gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts like the rest we were by nature deserving of wrath but this is paul's but god moment in ephesians he says but because of his great love for us god who is rich in mercy made us alive with christ even when we were dead in transgressions it is by
grace you've been saved and god raised us up with christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in christ jesus in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace expressed in his kindness to us in christ jesus for it is by grace you've been saved this oh so famous passage through faith and that is not from yourselves it is a gift of god not by works so that no one can boast for we are god's handiwork created in christ jesus to do good works which god prepared in advance for us to do and i'm going to
stop there after verse 10 and i'm going to talk a little bit about this i i wonder if anybody caught the the basic outline of paul's argument here he starts off by saying as for you you were dead in your transgressions you used to live among those that were living a sinful life you you were by nature deserving of wrath this is what you were and then he interrupts talking about what you were and he says but god stepped in with all of his mercy and all of his grace and he saved you and he brought you back to life spiritually and he raised you
up with christ and he he did this to show you how great his love was for you and then at the very end of his argument in verse 10 he says for we're god's handiwork we were created in christ jesus to do good works which god prepared in advance for us to do did you catch the model you were something then god worked and now you're designed for something else this is the most basic understanding of the christian message of transformation by the grace of god we were once one thing we were once living one way and then god began to do a work in
our life then god began to change some things around in our life begin to work some things out begin to forgive some sins begin to wash some sins away begin to help us live a holy life and now after god works in our life we are something else we're something that is not that thing that we used to be paul says in second corinthians 5 17 it says we are new creation now had happened this is paul's model you once were but god now you are that is our message as the church today if you want to know what it means to be the church
admit that we used to be one thing and then god worked and now we're saved sitting in this awesome thing called the church this is the basic message of grace and what it means for us but i i want to maybe point our eyes a little more specifically to some of the beauty of this passage i love it when he begins to talk about how god was rich in mercy he had great love for us in verse four it says he's rich in mercy in verse five it says made us alive with christ he made us alive with christ when we were dead in transgressions
i i know at least in my case i i've been a place in my life where i felt dead let's just be honest about some of our experiences there have been moments in our life where we felt like there was no hope we we felt like we had lost everything to live for we didn't have any purpose we we didn't have any reason to go on for all intents and purposes we were dead paul simply says but god made us a life he endowed us with new purpose he endowed us with a reason to live he endowed us with new passions he endowed us with
a little self-respect for who we were because we realized that he loved us he endowed us with these things he made us alive i i know it's wednesday night and i know i'm not supposed to get excited but i wonder if somebody else would be just as excited as i am that there was a time in our lives where we were dead but because of god's great love he raised us up and he made us alive in christ if it was not for christ if it was not for that grace we would still be laying in our graves spiritually dead and void without hope in
this world but because of the grace of god we were made alive we were made alive and he just interjects right here says you were made alive it says it's by grace you were saved he just throws it in there real quick just so we know we were made alive grace grace did that for you he goes further it says god raised us up with christ he didn't just bring us back to life he to live a barely alive existence somebody hear me he didn't raise us up just to live well i'm gonna sit on a pew i'm thankful that i'm saved but i'm really
not worth much else somebody hear me says he raised us up and he put us in the heavenly realm with jesus christ and then listen to this it says in order that that wasn't even the end that was just the beginning he made us alive he raised us up and ordered that in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace i've read this so many times and i've missed it so many times it says god raised us up made us alive saved us redeemed us gave us new hope and new life so that in the future he could
continue to do so one translator i think it was ff bruce i i can't remember off the top my head but he said through all ages god saved us so that through all ages he could continue to show us his love if that doesn't humble you i'm not sure what will god took us it really doesn't take any convincing to realize that what us means is not very good without god he took us and he redeemed us made us alive raised us up so that he could forever throughout all ages continue to show us the incomparable riches of his grace and he finishes his thought
he says expressed in his kindness to us in christ jesus this might expand our definition a little bit but it seems to me that paul is making a connection this is a duh moment between grace and christ but he says that this grace was expressed in his kindness to us through christ jesus meaning grace has a name grace has a face grace the expressed grace of god was a person so if you need a picture for what grace looks like you don't need to look any further than jesus paul says in philippians he said that he emptied himself made himself of no reputation took on
the form of bond sermon just listen i know i'm dealing with the camera but took on the form of a bond servant and he humbled himself to death even the death of the cross do you hear the descending order of where he started where he ended up he died the death of a cross the worst kind of death you could die in that age it meant you were a criminal it meant you were no good you were despised by the society if you died on a cross or or maybe you were a military criminal and rome wanted to make an example of you whatever it
was it wasn't a good death and paul says if you want to understand what the grace of god looks like you don't have to look any further than that man jesus christ who was willing to empty himself of all his divine prerogatives who was willing to empty himself of all of his glory of all of his majesty of all of his kingdom he was willing to step down from all of that and and die the kind of death he did if that doesn't paint a picture of how far and how powerful grace is we have nowhere else to look this is paul's argument that in
christ jesus god expressed in the fullest and most powerful way the riches of his grace that is willing to work in our life if he's willing to go that far if he's willing to go that far there is no distance that he will not traverse to let you experience his grace there is no distance that he will ignore to let you experience his grace as paul says he's going to keep doing it from age to age to age to age you know growing up i had a childish understanding of heaven i was like are we seriously just going to get up there and worship the
whole time i'm just gonna be like this for billions of years i was a kid don't follow me okay i wanted to see some stars or something you know i wanted to be able to fly i was like angels get to do it come on god you know i wanted to do all that cool stuff i've said you know rethought that i'm like you know worse than god's not such a bad deal you know you made it to heaven but i understand when paul's saying yes it's going to be a worship service yes it's going to be beautiful it's going to be powerful we're going
to be praising him for all of time but meanwhile right along all of that god is going to be dumping his love onto us for all eternity from age to age to age to age to age anybody ever been in the presence of god and you feel the love of god so strong everything else melts away right nothing else really matters we have all of our answers we're not worried anymore we're not concerned we feel at peace because we're in the presence of god now multiply that times infinity and by forever and that's what it's going to be like when we finally experience in all
all throughout eternity this love of god that he says he wanted to do this all along this was his plan for you this was his plan for i to show his love through all of eternity and i'm trying to move quick but i get excited about scripture sometimes but it goes on in verse 8 he reiterates it's for it is by grace really and paul's vocabulary you could say christ there because christ is that embodied that personified grace of god for that grace saved you through faith it's not from yourselves it's a gift from god not by works that no one can boast for we
are god's handiwork we didn't make ourselves this we're god's handiwork created in christ jesus to do good works which god prepared in advance for us to do he finishes out by simply saying grace saved units through your participation with your faith that you get to partake in the salvation and it it's a gift sometimes we limit that idea of a gift from god to the crucifixion of the resurrection but that gift is that all of eternity love that we're going to be feeling the fullness of that gift god just gave that to us y'all just to make sure nobody's like well i've been an all
right person paul says immediately he says no it was grace you didn't do anything god just wants to do this it's just in his character it's just in his nature this is what he wants to do i wonder if somebody's hearing me and they're wondering whether or not god loves him or whether or not god wants to show grace in their life or work in their life if if this is the end goal the answer is obvious yes he can show you love he can show you grace hands his argument simply by saying we're god's handiwork we're created in christ jesus to do good works
which god prepared in advance for us to do remember his order we were something god worked and now we are something else designed to benefit the kingdom of god before the church can never do anything the church must be something and what that something is is a group of individuals all over the world who have been redeemed by the grace of god not just at one moment but they're also sustained by the grace of god every day we get up and we take in that first breath it's the grace of god every time we experience joy it's the grace of god and let me just
say any time we experience sorrow but we make it it's the grace of god that is what the church is in identity the church is not exactly what it does with all of its programs at first the church is at its foundation people that have been redeemed by the grace of god and who then live in that ocean of grace we walk in it each and every day and then once we get that finalized once we understand that then the church can then go and do some things and be some things i once had a professor that said it this way there was a three-step
process and i only remember the first two steps so sorry to brother littles if you ever watch this but he said the church is the church is a group of people saved by grace the church is that and then the church does what it is a group of people redeemed by grace and so our mission whatever way we want to go about it whatever program we want to use whatever situation or maybe it's the fall fest again hopefully those are fun whatever thing we use it should be to call people and to the same experience of grace that we have experienced the church is and
the church must do what it is we must call people i'm going to run through this last bit a little a little quickly here paul does the same thing he repeats the pattern in verses 11 through 22 he repeats the pattern you were this god worked now you're this verse 11 he says therefore remember that formerly you who were gentiles by birth and called uncircumcised but those who call themselves the circumcision meaning you didn't have the covenant mark on you the jewish covenant mark remember he says in verse 12 remember that at that time you were separate from christ you were excluded from citizenship in
israel and foreigners of the covenants of the promise without hope and without god in the world but now in christ jesus you who once were far away you've been brought near by the blood of christ for he himself meaning command jesus he himself is our peace who has made the two groups one meaning the jews the covenant people of god and all the outsiders the gentiles he made those two groups one and has destroyed the barrier the dividing wall of hostility by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations his purpose here it is again his purpose was to create himself
one new humanity out of the two thus making peace and in one body to reconcile both of them to god through the cross by which he put to death their hostility he came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who are near for through him we both have access to the father by one spirit consequently because all of what god did this is this is what you are a passage he says consequently you're no longer foreigners and strangers but your fellow citizens with god's people and also members of his household built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets
with christ jesus himself as the chief cornerstone in him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the lord and in him you two are being built together to become a dwelling in which god lives by his spirit i'm just going to highlight a few things here he's talking about uh the work of christ bringing gentiles into the salvific plan and purposes of god and he says second half of verse 15 he says his purpose the whole reason for the salvation was to create himself one new humanity out of the two let me just give you some theological shorthand
his purpose was to create the church made up of every tribe and tongue and people that was his whole purpose was to create this as tired and worried as we are about the weather god's whole purpose his whole salvific plan was to create this i don't mean to sound prideful i i don't mean to sound like a spoiled brat i don't but we're pretty important to god pretty important to him aren't we based on what paul's saying here and it goes on here at the end where he says in verse 21 he says in him the whole building is joined together and it rises to
become a holy temple in the lord the whole point of this thing was to start the church and to build it up to start the church and to build it up and then he ends with this in verse 22 it says and in him meaning christ you too in case you thought it was somewhere or someone else you two are being built together to become a dwelling in which god lives by his spirit the lord of glory needed a house he needed a place to stay and this is what he came up with and i know that's a little funny for me to say and
uh and i meet it with a little bit of humor in there but i i wonder if we could begin to see what it really means when the bible says we have been saved by grace it means the whole plan of god the whole purpose the whole focus of everything he has done in the world was for this experience that we get to have sitting in this building and for all those individuals who call on his name throughout the world it was all about that it was all about this so i i have to maybe train myself as i go throughout my life but i
never want to sit in a church building i never want to sit in a church service i never even want to listen to a sermon by myself and think that it's not important think that it's a waste of time think that i could be doing something better thinking that i could really be somewhere else and to be having a much better time doing that than i would be in the church i i think that is a misunderstanding of scripture and i i think it's a misunderstanding of the message that god wants us to understand this is what it's all about folks this is what all
of the marvels are for it is about the church it is about our experience of salvation in the church this is what it is all about you are important you're important apc we're important we're important to god we're we're important in his plan we're the apple of his eye we're the reason for all the suffering we're the reason for all the stuff that he went through even when we read the book of hebrews it says that he endured the cross and he despised the shame why for the joy that was set before him that joy was the church that joy was you and i experiencing
the grace of god i hope you're understanding what i'm trying to say you are you are you are the focus you are the climax you are the reason you are the purpose for all of what god has been doing throughout the ages and in fact you're the reason you're his devotion you're the whole thing that it's all about in the ages to come this is what it's about what a beautiful salvation what an awesome salvation what an awesome experience of grace that we have so every day when we wake up whenever i say grace when you wake up grace meets you i don't mean it
lightly again i was young and i was real rude and disrespectful i'm not now right my mom she's like ah we used to i used to make fun i won't say we i'll just incriminate myself i used to make fun you know people are like you know how you doing you'll be like i'm terrible but by the grace of god i used to make fun of that pastor i was so rude i was i was disrespectful but i was making fun i was like that's so cliche by the grace of god i'll be all right but i simply think those elders had something that i
was missing as a young ignorant disrespectful kid i was missing something because everything we do is by the grace of god everything we get to do everything we experience it's by the grace of god i i even want to publicly apologize for ever making fun of that because it's by that grace it's by that grace that we do anything we can accomplish anything as the church if we miss that fundamental point we'll never fulfill that mission that that statement that we have for this year to be the church we got to get this first what an awesome responsibility to be the church so much so
that paul he turns his argument in chapter four of ephesians he's laid out grace he's laid out all this beautiful stuff that we get to experience and he opens up chapter four and he continues this line of argument all the all the way through the rest of the book he chapter four verse one he says as a prisoner of the lord then i urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you've received just as i think we sort of feel the weight of that responsibility of the experience that we have that grace of god i think paul sensed it as a pastor so
he writes to these churches he says hey live a life worthy of what you get to experience each and every day nothing seems too big anymore for god to ask me to do nothing seems like an inconvenience anymore once i i really realized god's intentions for my life even through eternity nothing seems like a hindrance nothing seems like a burden anymore i i simply just have a desire god i want to walk worthy i've experienced such a great salvation god i help me keep my steps in line i just want to walk worthy i just want to walk worthy i just want to live in
a way that pleases you and honors what you did and what you plan to do and an eternity lord i want to walk worthy and i believe that should be every church's cry god thank you for the grace thank you for the mercy thank you for the salvation thank you for the plan but god please please we can't do it on our own by our own measures by our own standards by our own wisdom we really can't lord we need your help but we want to walk worthy let me put it another way lord we want to be the church i don't have time to
go through it but all through ephesians paul begins to lay out ways we can do that that includes holy living yes that includes living a life that is turning its back on sin yes but it also includes that mission that paul concluded with in chapter 2 verse 10 where it says he we are god's handiwork we're created in christ jesus to do good works to do good works i'm thankful for the party we're going to experience in heaven i'm thankful for all that love but the reason we are what we are right now the reason we are what we are right now the reason we
have experienced this grace is to do good works meaning to build up that kingdom of god we were once all about ourselves paul says we were gratifying our own desires the lust of the flesh we were going after everything that we wanted right that's what we used to be paul says now that i've experienced this salvation my whole life all of my energies all of my affection should be devoted to the building up of this thing called the church which is just a bunch of individuals who are surviving on the grace of god that is what the church is that is what the church is
to do and i wonder i have us all stand here at the end maybe we'll have a little bit of music i want to invite us to a time of prayer i never want to hear a message like this and not have a moment to respond to god in whatever way you see fit if it's thanking them for the salvation that we get to experience this grace we get to experience for if it's simply that that prayer that urging of paul lord help me to walk worthy how many walked worthy of the salvation really we're not worthy of it paul makes that clear we're not
worthy of it but still paul calls and i believe god calls hey let's try to walk worthy of this thing let's do our best to not only exist as the church remember the church is but help us to be the church in our walk help us to be the church in the way that we live i wonder if we begin to pray as a church we're going to take some time we we've got a little bit of time you want to find a place of prayer that's fine if you want to kneel if you want to go to a wall i believe we even have
markings here on the floor if you want to come and maintain distance that's totally up to you but i feel the calling of the lord tonight i i know it's wednesday i get that but i i hear the voice i hear the voice of god maybe someone needs to experience that grace in a more powerful way you can tonight whether you're here in this room or you're watching online i urge you begin to pray for that lord show me your grace reveal that to me more fully lord may we feel that second call lord i've experienced it i love it i'm thankful for it but
now lord help me to walk worthy yes that was so unworthy let's begin to cry out to him let's begin to pray to that effect lord my sin washed away in your blood oh to be like you give all i have just to know you jesus there's no one beside you forever the hope in my give heart i have just to know here jesus there's no one besides that grace oh lord you've given us life transformation hallelujah you've given us that abiding grace and abiding grace we did feel it for the first time but thank you that that's not the old hallelujah god used his
word to call out a praise for his grace go ahead to call out at thanksgiving go ahead oh lord oh lord we owe you so much and we're thankful we're thankful for the opportunities thank you jesus there's no one beside you forever your cross has taught me to live and mercy my heart now to sing too much to me trouble shall come i know that your strength is enough your scandal of grace you died in my place so my soul will live to be like you give all i have just to know you jesus there's no one beside you because of you jesus it's home
because of you jesus it's all because of your love that my soul will this is right this is good go ahead hallelujah god you put us to a pause here to look again at your grace to see it again to experience it again afresh and anew and to express an appreciation for this grace and it's all because of you jesus it's all because of you jesus because of your love that my soul will see or to be like you give all i have just to know jesus jesus there's no thank the lord this is the response that god was looking for tonight and we're we're
giving it we're trying to give it our best of the word of god has stopped us and paused us at the grace of god i went through pretty much of this day just kind of taking it for granted i didn't intend to the word of god and the spirit of god has helped us to stop and think about how many times have have we said it where would we be we'd be oh happy let's thank him for how intensely he loves us that was the tongue of intensity of the love and the grace of god hallelujah oh lord he's pouring it out upon us right
now he's pouring it out upon us hallelujah hallelujah god i don't even know how much i'll need what you're giving me tonight the comfort the security the knowledge of your grace oh god and that you are there for us and that you have loved us that you have loved us god god god thank you jesus thank you jesus thank you jesus hallelujah hallelujah thank you jesus yes yes yes yes we can be as intense i know we can't duplicate god i think you'll get what i'm saying as intense about thanking him and appreciating as he is intense about loving us that that verse that it's
not a one-time thing but god wants to keep showing it to us in the ages to come just keep on loving us and keep on pouring out his grace and when we look back and consider what the lord's done for us already that's enough to praise him about but it's not going to stop grace is going to get us there but grace is going to bless us there oh thank god thank god i'm with you peter i'm apologizing for every time i've come and just set through a service whoo really literally i ought to be on my feet if it was nothing but thank you
lord for forgiving my sins we don't have to have a new miracle or a dramatic second miracle or another touch just thank you lord hallelujah i feel that thankfulness in here tonight i feel it online go ahead everywhere you are let's give him praise and lord we want to thank you and thank you and thank you again hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah you've put on us a fresh appreciation yes you have yes you have yes you have thank you jesus thank you jesus thank you jesus hallelujah hallelujah oh god and the church does what we are somebody that you're going to be in contact with over the
next few days will need the message god's grace is for you and to you they may not believe it at that moment they may not believe they're worthy but i feel like directing us tonight we need to tell somebody the grace of god is for you wants to pour out his grace in your life and who knows what that could mean to somebody who has given up on life given up on themselves you know that's what happens so much people just literally give up on themselves god hasn't given up and the church is not going to give up
