Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
Power Before Geography: The Order of Acts 1:8
- The lesson opens with a reading of Acts 1:8 and a look at its order: Jesus named the power before He named any location — receive power, then go.
- The Pentecostal experience is not a suggestion for the comfortable Christian; it is the prerequisite for an effective one.
- Witness attempted on willpower will fail in every zone — Jerusalem, Samaria, and the uttermost parts alike; without Pentecost, the disciples would have stayed in the upper room.
- Jesus gave His disciples no method, no personality makeover, and no sales pitch; He gave them the Holy Ghost and told them to wait until they were endued with power from on high.
- He tells of rolling down his window at a stoplight after a powerful service and shouting "Praise the Lord" to the car beside him — a boldness he says he would never have had on his own, and the kind the Holy Ghost gives even an introvert.
Scriptures: Acts 1:8
Concentric Circles of Discomfort: One Spirit for Every Zone
- The order of Acts 1:8 is on purpose: Jesus moves the disciples in concentric circles of discomfort — from home, to neighbor, to enemy, and finally to strangers — so that by the uttermost part every natural excuse has been stripped away.
- The gospel will not cross those lines on our courage; it crosses them only on the Spirit. If God calls a person, He will equip them.
- The same Pentecost that empowered Peter in Acts 2 empowered Philip in Acts 8 and Peter again in Acts 10 — one Spirit, one power, one witness for Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the uttermost part of the earth.
Scriptures: Acts 2; Acts 8; Acts 10
Not by Might nor by Power: Changed from Glory to Glory
- Zechariah 4:6, spoken to Zerubbabel, says the work is not done by might, army, ability, resume, or talent, but by God's Spirit; though written 500 years before Pentecost, it states the key idea of Acts 1:8.
- In 2 Corinthians 3:18, believers beholding the glory of the Lord are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord — Pentecost changes people from the inside out.
- The Pentecostal experience is not an event we attend but a transformation we are undergoing day after day; the quiet believer does not become a bold evangelist by willpower, programs, or shame, but the Spirit transforms character, and the transformed character does the work.
- The same Spirit changed Saul the persecutor into Paul and Peter the denier into a preacher, and believers today have the same Holy Ghost that evangelists and missionaries have — not a different one.
Scriptures: Zechariah 4:6; 2 Corinthians 3:18
Wait, Be Filled, Go: The Baptism of the Holy Ghost
- The baptism of the Holy Ghost is a specific event, not a vague spiritual influence. First, Jesus commanded His disciples to wait for it: the promise of the Father (Acts 1:4) and baptism with the Holy Ghost "not many days hence" (Acts 1:5).
- The disciples were already saved and had walked with Jesus, yet they still did not have what He was promising — it was a distinct, subsequent blessing they were commanded to receive before they could do the work.
- Second, it is received by faith and by a sign: speaking in tongues was the initial evidence on the day of Pentecost, confirmed again in Acts 8, Acts 10, and Acts 19; the evidence is the Bible sign of infilling and is not optional.
- Third, it is the prerequisite for mission: the Pentecostal experience precedes the Pentecostal mission, and without the infilling the witness has no power. Jesus named all four zones — Jerusalem the home city, Judea the surrounding region, Samaria the despised neighbor, and the uttermost parts the unknown Gentiles — before a single one was reached, and the lesson of Acts 1:8 is three verbs: wait, be filled, go.
Scriptures: Acts 1:4; Acts 1:5; Acts 8; Acts 10; Acts 19
The Spirit Creates the Love That Makes Witness Possible
- The Spirit does not only empower the witness; He creates the love that makes the witness possible — the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us (Romans 5:5).
- The same Spirit who gives Pentecostal power gives Pentecostal love, and a person cannot have one without the other for very long.
- The world does not measure what believers know; it reads whether they care and whether they love. If loving people is hard, he counsels that it is time to spend more time with Jesus and receive the infusion of the Holy Ghost.
Scriptures: Romans 5:5
Jerusalem First: Pentecost Overflows at Home
- The experience began in Jerusalem: what God did in the upper room overflowed into the streets, and about 3,000 were added to the church that same day — from 120 to 3,120 in a single day.
- Jerusalem is hard precisely because it is home, where people know who you were before and ask whether you are really any different; still, Jesus commanded His witnesses to begin there, among family and people who know them.
- Peter, who had denied Jesus three times a few weeks earlier and hidden in the upper room, preached and 3,000 could not refuse — not by his preaching ability or courage, but by the Pentecostal power poured out on him; it is the same inside-out change of 2 Corinthians 3:18.
- When the church grew too comfortable inside its own walls, persecution scattered the disciples into Judea and beyond; feeling stirred and uncomfortable can be God moving His people toward their calling before He has to shake them.
- Witness starts small: before a platform or a pulpit, serve, be faithful, teach a Bible study, and tell a neighbor about the love of Jesus — the first witness is to people we know and like.
- The close: geography without Pentecost is willpower, and Pentecost without geography is unused power. Each believer needs their own upper room and a fresh infilling, going from glory to glory, so the Spirit can give the boldness the work requires.

All right. Praise the Lord, everyone. Uh it's good to be here today. We're going to go and to get into the word uh directly here. Uh Thankful for what God is doing. Thankful for the the Holy Ghost. Are you thankful for the Holy Ghost? Uh God is moving in our midst, and we're seeing many things happen uh because the Lord's working. And we want to draw your attention to the book of Acts in chapter 1, verse 8. And uh the scripture says in Acts chapter 1 verse 8, "But ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you, and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth."
And notice the order here in that scripture. It says the power is named before the location or geography. Jesus did not say go and then receive power after that you go into all the world. This the lesson here today is unto the ends of the earth, unto the ends of the earth. And so we want to talk a little bit about the uh the lesson here about unto the ends of the earth. He said that the the the order here is that he said receive power and then go.
You will receive power and then go. The Pentecostal experience is not a suggestion for the comfortable Christian. It's the prerequisite for an effective one. If we're trying to reach Jerusalem on willpower, we will fail. If we're trying to reach Samaria on willpower, we will fail. If we're trying to reach the uttermost parts on willpower, we will fail. Without Pentecost, the disciples would have stayed in the upper room. With Pentecost, the upper room came to them and then they went to the world. The point here is is that Pentecost is required before we can go into all the earth.
Pentecost is what we need before we can be endued with power from on high. Pentecost is what we need before we can see God move in all of these areas, in Jerusalem and Judaea and Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the earth. If we are endued with power from on high, then God can work. Praise the Lord. Are you thankful for the Holy Ghost today? Now think about the last time that you had shared a story about yourself, a testimony, uh your faith, your convictions in a setting that was uncomfortable, a workplace, a family gathering where you were the only believer in the room, a neighborhood where you stuck out.
How How did that feel? I know I know for some people that's easy because you're extroverted and you just love talking to people and you love being in crowds and and you you wither up and dry up and everything like that if you're having to be by yourself, but when when you're in a crowd, you you thrive. But then there's people like me that uh you know, I get in front of a crowd and I I'm like uh okay, find find a corner to hide in or or uh you know, help me not not be too conspicuous here, you know.
That sort of thing. But I I'll tell you what, the power of the Holy Ghost can make a difference. And in the scripture here is is a the there's a command in the scripture for us to go. There's a command for us to go into all the the earth, but the Lord didn't leave us on our by our own means. He didn't leave us uh to come up with our own solutions on how to do that. But what he said was that I'm going to give you power.
I'm going to give you the power that you need. You If you're an introvert, I'm going to show you how to do it. I'm going to give you power to be a witness. Now I remember uh I I remember a a time when uh when we had uh a powerful service. And I mean the Holy Ghost moved and we felt his presence and and you know, we were on top of the world and three other guys that went with me and and I was driving at the time and we were going to go out and get some lunch after church on Sunday morning and we were driving down the road and we came to a signal light and had to stop.
And the car that was next to us, I looked over because first of all, their music was blaring so loud that I could hear it in my car and my car was vibrating with the the beat and everything like that. And so I looked over and you know, we had four people in our car and they had four people in their car, some some young people and and I just rolled down my window and I said, "Praise the Lord." And and the guy rolls down his window, "What?"
I said, "PRAISE THE LORD." "GO TO AND I said, "No, I'm going the other way." And then we drove off. But that was because the Holy Ghost was moving and I felt the Lord. I wouldn't normally do that. I wouldn't even look over to the people next to me, but you know what? Something happens to you when the Holy Ghost starts to move in your life and you start getting Pentecost on you. The Holy Ghost moves and then you start feeling bold. You start feel like saying praise the Lord when you go out to eat lunch or whatever.
You know, the the Lord helps us is my point here. The Holy Ghost can help us when no So so there's no excuses. Introvert, extrovert whatever vert you are, you know. God can help you. Amen, you believe that? Praise God. Imagine that feeling multiplied by a a thousand, having having to, you know, speak to people and things like that. And that's what the disciples faced when Jesus told them that they would be his witnesses in Jerusalem. He would be their witnesses in Judea and Samaria and unto the uttermost parts of the earth.
Every one of those names is a different kind of uncomfortable. And Jesus did not give them a method, he did not give them a personality makeover, he did not give them a sales pitch, he didn't give them classes on on on how to do it. He gave them the Holy Ghost. He gave them the spirit to help them to do what it was that he had asked them to do, which is to be witnesses in all the earth. And he told them, "Wait in the upper room.
Wait for Pentecost. Wait for your Pentecost so that you can be endued with power from on high and God can give you the tools that you need to be a witness. Praise the Lord." That one made the mission He is the reason the mission is not impossible. We have to be filled first. Praise the Lord. No notice the order order here that Jesus gave to his disciples. It's not random, but it's on purpose. Jesus is moving the disciples uh in concentric circles of discomfort from home to neighbor to enemy and finally to strangers.
By the time they reach the uttermost part, every natural excuse has been stripped away. If the gospel can cross every one of those lines, it can cross the line you're most afraid to cross. Anybody afraid to cross lines today? Any any of these uh give you angst and uh and you're like, "Oh, I don't know if I could do that. I don't think I could be a a missionary because those missionaries have a special calling, a special talent, a special something. I don't know what it is, but it's it's something that I don't possess."
Well, I I beg to differ with you. If God calls you, he's going to equip you. You believe that? The gospel will not cross lines that uh on your courage. It will only cross them on the spirit. The Holy Ghost will come upon us. The Holy Ghost will help us. The Holy Ghost Pentecost is what we need today to empower us to do His will. Praise the Lord. The same Pentecost that empowered Peter in Acts chapter 2 is the same Pentecost that empowered Philip in Acts chapter 8.
And then empowered Peter again in Acts chapter 10. One spirit, one power, one witness for Jerusalem, for Judea, for Samaria, and for the uttermost part of the earth. Praise the Lord. Now, let's find out what changed when the spirit came. Zechariah 4:6, and I didn't give this to the folks in the back, but it says, "Not by might nor by power, but by my by my spirit," says the Lord of hosts. This ver- verse was spoken to Zerubbabel. And what that scripture is telling us today is that uh the Lord was saying that, you know, you may have plans on building a a temple.
You may have plans to do what I've called you to do, but he said, "It's it's not your ability. It's not your army. It's not your ability. It's not your resume. It's not your talent. It's not what you know. It's not who you know. It's not the things that have come into your life, but it's by my spirit, saith the Lord, and he is going to get it done. How many of you have realized that today that we need the Holy Ghost? We depend upon the Holy Ghost to work in our lives.
If we don't have our own personal Pentecost, we're going to be lost. We're going to be uh floundering trying to figure out what God is doing in our midst. So, this was written 500 years before Pentecost, but it's the the the key idea of Acts chapter 1 verse 8. But, you shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you. Pentecost did not introduce a new idea, it fulfilled that old one in Zechariah. Praise the Lord. Now, I do want to look at 2 Corinthians chapter 3:18, and I asked uh Brother Martin to put that one up.
Here's the part of the Pentecostal experience that makes possible Here is the part the Pentecostal experience makes possible that nothing else can. Paul said, "But, we all with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the spirit of the Lord." What that scripture is saying is is that Pentecost is going to change us. Pentecost is going to cause us to go from glory to glory to glory to glory. It's going to change us from the inside out.
The Holy Ghost is going to change us the into the same image of Jesus Christ from glory to glory. Jesus has given us the tools that we need to be his witnesses. The Holy Ghost is going to give us the tools that we need to be endued with power from on high. Praise the Lord. The same spirit, the Pentecostal experience, is not an event we attend, it's a transformation we're undergoing day after day after day, prayer meeting after prayer meeting after prayer meeting, service after service after service.
Hallelujah. Praise God. God is transforming us by his spirit every day. Praise the Lord. Now, if you say, "Well, I'm not transformed." Well, may- maybe it's time to get back to the upper room. Maybe it's time to get back to that prayer room. It's time to get back to that place where you found the Holy Ghost when you first received his spirit. Hallelujah. And it's time for us to get back to that upper room experience once again and find Pentecost once again so that we can one more time have the power to become witnesses.
I think that's what we miss a lot of times is we so many times think that, "Oh, well, you know, I've got the Holy Ghost and I've got the Pentecostal experience, but but now I've got to figure it out on my own. I've got to be able We'll fail every time when we try to do it that way." Amen. But, if we'll let the Holy Ghost move, the Pentecostal experience will transform us. It will change us from the inside out, from glory to glory. Think about what this means for the people in this in this room here.
The introvert doesn't become an extrovert by willpower. The quiet believer does not become a bold evangelist by joining a program. The person who trembles at the thought of door-to-door witness does not become a soul winner by being shamed into it. The spirit transforms character from the inside out, and then the transformed character does the work the untransformed character could never do. Second Corinthians 3:18 is the verse that lets you stop pretending you're somebody you are not and start being changed into somebody you cannot become by yourself.
The Holy Ghost can do it. Do you believe that today? The Holy Ghost can help us. Praise God. Just just like that car, you might be riding down riding in the car and you're like I don't want to stop and witness to that person, but the Lord says you've got you've got a boldness in you. You've got the spirit in you. Go ahead and do it. Praise the Lord. We need that. We need the Holy Ghost to move us and change us. We are being changed into the people who cannot help but witness.
The Holy Ghost will constrain us. The Holy Ghost will command us. The Holy Ghost will transform us by the same spirit that Peter had, by the same spirit that Philip had, by the same spirit that Paul had. Praise God. We don't have a different Holy Ghost. You don't have a different Holy Ghost than than evangelists and missionaries and others have. It's the same Holy Ghost. Hallelujah. Saul was converted from a persecutor into a Paul. Peter was changed from a denier into a preacher. And this introvert in this class today can be converted into a witness with an open mouth to speak whatever God has them to say.
Praise the Lord. From glory to glory. How many of you are wanting to go from glory to glory? You want to go from Holy Ghost encounter to Holy Ghost encounter. Praise the Lord. Are you ready to have that today? Are you prepared for God to move in this service today and and have uh brother uh David Smith uh preach to us. Amen. I am, too. I'm excited about it. Praise the Lord. Before we read Acts chapter 1:8, we need to be honest about one word. And that is that it doesn't matter if if you have a an idea that, well, you know, is it Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit?
It's It's God's presence, okay? Does doesn't matter what you call that. Uh but what the point is, the Holy Ghost has come upon you is not describing a a vague spiritual influence. It's described as a specific event. What the rest of the New Testament calls the baptism of the Holy Ghost or what our movement calls the Pentecostal experience. It's Pentecost. Praise the Lord. It's It's the It's the Bible point that we can't get past. There are There are three different aspects to this that I want to bring out today.
The first is Jesus commanded his disciples to wait for it. Wait for the promise of the Father, he said in Acts 1:4. Acts 1:5, you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. It was a promise that God was going to pour out his spirit upon the 120. Whoever will, he will pour out his spirit on upon them. And it started in the upper room. And so, it was a promise for them. They were saved, they were disciples, they had walked with Jesus, and still they did not have what Jesus was promising.
There was a distinct subsequent blessing. They were commanded to receive before they could do the work. They had to first wait. Everyone say wait. Sometimes we need to wait for the Holy Ghost. We need to wait for him to wait upon him. That means pray and ask the Lord to touch us and pray and ask him to help us. And pray and ask him to fill us and endue us with power from on high. Ask him for his spirit once again. Hallelujah. Pray until you get the Holy Ghost again, until you start speaking in tongues again.
Pray until God moves you to boldness, moves you to faith, moves you to believing. The second is it's received by faith and by a sign. The initial sign that was given is tongues. The initial evidence on the day of Pentecost was tongues and it was confirmed three more times in Acts 8, in Acts 10, and Acts 19. It is speaking in other tongues as the spirit gives the utterance. The evidence is not optional in the in this. It is the Bible sign of Pentecostal uh infilling.
And finally, it's the prerequisite for mission. We we can try to be a a missionary without the Holy Ghost, but it will fail. Many have done that. But if you you shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost has come upon you. We need the power of the Holy Ghost in us in order to be witnesses, in order to be missionaries, in order to do his will, in order to do his work. Praise the Lord. The the language doesn't change. The Pentecostal experience precedes the Pentecostal mission.
Without the infilling, the witness has no power. With the infilling, the witness cannot be stopped because the infilling is doing the work of 2 Corinthians 3:18. Transform, transformation, transforming your character from the inside out so that the witness becomes the natural overflow of a life that has been changed, a life that is full, a life that is influenced by the Holy Ghost. The The Holy Ghost will influence us. It will move us. It will cause us to do things that we wouldn't normally do ourselves. I'm not comfortable with this or that or the other thing, but the Holy Ghost is is saying, "Do it anyway.
Do it because I'm giving you the authority. Do it because I'm giving you the power. Do it because you're going in my name. Do it because I've called you to do it. Do it because it's a commandment. Do it because it's what is right." Transformation is what we need. Praise the Lord. But you shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost has come upon you and you shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and in Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
There's four zones: Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, the uttermost parts of the earth. Jerusalem represents the disciples' own city, safe, familiar, already accepted. It's It's people that they know, family, things like that. Judea, the surrounding region, still Jewish, still culturally familiar, but outside the comfort of the city walls. Samaria, a despised mixed-race neighbor, centuries of hostility. That's what that region represents. And finally, the uttermost parts of the earth, the Gentiles, the unknown, people with no covenant history. They don't have a shared language. They don't have common ground.
We have to We have to become like them or we have to learn about their culture. We have to learn about their language. We have to learn about their ways. We have to learn about their gods. We have to learn about them so that we can be an influence again to them. Praise the Lord. Notice that Jesus names all four before a single one of them is actually reached. He knew that the disciples were going to reach all of the known world in that day. He's not letting the disciples choose which zones to enter.
He's not allowing them to to who they are to love, who they are to reach, who they are to minister to. He's laying out the entire scope of the mission so there's no ambiguity later. Uh he's laying out the entire scope of the mission so there's no confusion. And notice what comes before location. He said, "You shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost has come upon you." Praise the Lord. The Pentecostal experience is not an afterthought. It's the prerequisite. It's the thing we need to get to first.
The disciples are not sent into uncomfortable zones on their own courage. They're sent under the anointing. They're sent with the power. They're sent with the ability to lay hands on the sick and they shall recover. He is going with them to be able to cast out devils. He's going with them to be able to do the work of the ministry. Praise the Lord. He's sending them into the desert to minister to the Ethiopian eunuch. He's sending them to all the regions around about Europe in order to be able to minister to people that would not have ever been reached if it weren't for the Holy Ghost sending them.
The same spirit, same tongues, the same love, but the geography changes. The Pentecostal experience never changes. We still need the Holy Ghost today. We still need the the of the Holy Ghost. We still need the infusion of the spirit in our lives today. It doesn't change. But maybe God is telling us we need to change our attitudes. We need to change our location. We need to change our our situation so that we can reach somebody new. Praise the Lord. But God's love, God's spirit is going to compel us.
Acts 1:4 and 5 says, "And being assembled together with them commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which saith he you have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence." So, the lesson of Acts 1:8 is not go, it's wait. It's be filled and then go. Three verbs: wait, be filled, go. Skipping the middle one is why so much witnessing today runs on the willpower instead of uh the Holy Ghost power.
We're not filled. We're not ready. We're not uh receiving that boldness of the Holy Ghost. We're not receiving that anointing of the Holy Ghost. We're not receiving the unction that God has given us. The early church did not work up courage. They were clothed with power from on high, and they spoke with boldness, the Holy Ghost working with them. Praise God. We We can't do this on our own, can we? We can't do it without the power of the Holy Ghost working with us. So, they moved from waiting to going because of the Pentecostal experience.
Without the Pentecostal experience, we cannot do it. With the Pentecostal experience, we not can we cannot help but do it. Praise the Lord. The spirit does not only empower the witness, he creates the love that makes the witness possible. If we can't get the Holy Ghost to move on us and and cause us to start loving people. If the Holy Ghost is in us, the Holy Ghost is going to cause us to love people. Now, some of us we we can't stand people. I I don't don't don't want you to raise your hand or anything, but you know, but I'll tell you what, you get the Holy Ghost and the Holy Ghost is going to start changing you and you're going to start finding that oh, I I feel for that person.
That that that poor person is lost and and and doesn't have a way and and and it doesn't have any hope. He doesn't have what I have. I've got something working inside of me that is better than what this person has and and and I feel compassion. I feel a love for that person. How can I reach them? And the Holy Ghost is going to cause that to happen. He's going to put the love of God in us. Praise God. Without the Pentecostal experience, we can't do it.
The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost, which is given unto us. It's what the scripture says. The same spirit who gives the Pentecostal power gives the Pentecostal love. You can't have one without the other for very long. If you want God, if you want the Holy Ghost in your life, if you want the spirit, you want the power, you want all of these things, you're going to start seeking for that maybe, but then all of a sudden you're going to start feeling the love of God in your heart and you're going to feel like, you know, that that person needs to know I'm thankful God loved me enough to save me.
I'm thankful that God saw me in my desperate situation and came down and redeemed me. He He brought me out of the miry clay. He set me upon the rock, and I'm thankful for that, and because of it, I love him, and because I love him, I want to love others. Hallelujah. So, we see that this began in Jerusalem. We see that the the love of God began to work in the disciples, and the Pentecostal experience exploded in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost. They heard the 120 in the upper room speaking in their own language and glorifying and magnify- magnifying God in the upper room.
And that experience was an overflow. It It poured out into the streets, and they heard it. And because of that overflow, and because of what God was doing in the upper room, there came to be 3,000 that were added to the church that same day. It So, in one day, they went from a church of 120 to a church of 3,120, plus or plus or minus plus uh kids. I don't know if they counted kids in that number, but can you imagine that? You know, we've we've got some problems here because uh we don't have room for them.
We don't have room for 3,000 in this church. We don't have room for for all of these uh issues that we're we're encountering here, right? Some of these were poor uh poor Christians. They didn't have a a whole lot. So, what are we going to do? So, they they had a they had a work cut out for their work cut out for them. All right. Why could the disciples not reach Jerusalem on their own? Well, Jerusalem is their home. Jerusalem is hard. Jerusalem is is where people are criticizing you and saying, "Well, I I know you who you were before you got into church, you know?
I I I know what you were like before, and and uh you know, are you any different? Are you really different now that you're in church? You know, what what what happened to you? Well, I don't see any different. You don't look different on the outside. You're you're still the same you that you were 2 days ago, right? No no no change that I can see. So so it's hard. It's not easy, is it? To reach your own. Jesus came unto his own and his own received him not.
The scripture says. So, we're in good company I guess there, but there's no excuse. Jesus said, "Go and reach Jerusalem. Go and be a witness there in Jerusalem, in your hometown, in your own family, and in amongst people that know you." Praise the Lord. And then And then the next area is the um is Let's let's look at this again. 120 disciples, most of them Galileans with no theological training. They were fishermen, they were uh people that had regular jobs. They they weren't in ministry of any any sort.
They didn't have any training other than Jesus. They didn't have any public speaking training. They didn't have any fundraising training. They were about to be sent into the hardest evangelistic assignment in human history, and they had not yet moved. Look at them. They were still in the upper room. They had been commanded to wait. And because they waited because God came down in that place, and there were tongues like as of fire that sat on each of them, and the Holy Ghost moved upon them, and there was a sound of a rushing wind that entered into that place.
All of a sudden, God started to move in ways that they could not imagine. God started to do something in that place that was beyond their ability, beyond their control, beyond their their talent, and and all of that. The 120, they were still obeying, and that is something in itself. The second miracle that day, besides the the moving and the outpouring of the Holy Ghost, was was that a sound came, tongues came, the spirit came, and people hiding behind locked doors for weeks suddenly could not stay inside.
The Pentecostal experience, distinct subsequent spirit baptism infilling, and it's what made the rest of Acts possible. Hallelujah. And when they heard this, they were pricked in their hearts, is what happened to those that had been gathered outside. And he said unto them, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?" And Peter said unto them, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." Then they that gladly received his word were baptized, and the same day there were added unto them about 3,000 souls.
Praise the Lord. 3,000 in a single day, not by Peter's preaching ability. Peter had denied Jesus three times a few weeks earlier. Not by Peter's courage. Peter had hidden in the upper room with the rest. It was by the Pentecostal power that had been poured out on Peter 50 minutes earlier. The same spirit who had filled Peter was now filling the 3,000, and the church was born in a single sermon. That's what the Pentecostal experience does. It takes a fisherman who stutters and turns him into a preacher who shakes a city.
And what the spirit did in Acts 2 is the same 2 Corinthians 3:18 work. Changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the spirit of the Lord. Peter did not become a new person because he memorized a new script. Peter became a new person because the spirit changed him from the inside out. And changed Peter and the changed Peter preached a sermon 3,000 people could not refuse. Praise the Lord. But the comfort zone was not allowed to last. Almost immediately persecution entered the church because they were too comfortable at home.
They were too comfortable inside the walls of the church. They were too comfortable just coming to church every Sunday and hearing sermons from the pastor and and receiving uh a blessing and and enjoying the music and enjoying the worship and participating in the worship with God. But God had to send them persecution. He had to send them troubles in order to fulfill the calling that God had placed in their lives. So, if you're if you're feeling uncomfortable today, if you're feeling uneasy today about where you're at with God and and things are are stirring in your life and you you're feeling that persecution and and and you know that God is saying to you, "Go and baptize people and go and teach all nations and go and make disciples and go and do this, that, and the other thing."
And and and you're resisting that and you're feeling uncomfortable because God's working with you and working on you and and dealing with you about it, it's time for us to go before God has to send the persecution, before God has to send something in our lives that shakes us and rattles us to the core. So, persecution spread it. They went to Judea. They went outside the walls of the church. They went outside the walls of the city of Jerusalem. They went outside the city and started to share the gospel everywhere they went.
They the the disciples went and filled the highways and they they went into houses and they they they spoke to people that were in in the houses and taught them Bible studies and started to teach them the ways of the Lord in those studies. Here Here's the part that the location and the geography m- many times hides. The Pentecostal experience is not only power. The Pentecostal experience is love, as I mentioned, but it's Pentecost. It's the the love poured out. Romans 5:5, the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost, which is given unto us.
The 3,000 were not won by argument. They were won because the spirit convinced them that these fishermen loved them enough to preach to them the truth that Jesus had given to them. By this shall all men know that you're my disciples, if you have love one for another. The world does not care about what we know. The world only knows whether we care or not, whether we love them or not. The world reads our love. The world reads how much we love them. And love is not manufactured by us.
If we can let the Holy Ghost move through us and be poured out into us and and we can develop that and be able to to embrace that more in our lives, then God's going to be able to shine through us. People are going to know that we have love and that God loves them because we love one another and because we love them and and care about them and we care we're happy when people come and visit, and we're happy when people are in our church for the first time.
We're going to go to them and say, "I'm so glad you're here today. Thank you for coming." Amen. Are you thankful for the love of God? Pentecost was a call away from human self-dependency to God-dependency. The Pentecostal experience did not just just give the disciples a sermon to preach. It gave them a heart that could not help but preach it. The spirit does the same today. If you're having a hard time loving people, may I suggest it's because you have not spent enough time with Jesus.
If you haven't spent enough time with Jesus, if you haven't got the infusion of the Holy Ghost that will be the the love of God shed abroad in our hearts, then we're going to have a hard time loving people. Amen. The first witness is the easiest of the the four. And it's also one that we we many times underestimate. We look for big platforms, exotic mission fields, dramatic calls, and and and big platforms to to present the message. I've I've had many people come and say, you know, "Pastor, I I want to I I want to preach in the pulpit."
And my first question is, "Okay, are you serving somewhere in the church?" "No, I just feel a call to to preach." Well, um are you faithful to church? "No. No, I I I haven't been here much, but I just really feel called to preach. I feel like God's calling me to be a preacher." Well, have you taught a Bible study? "No. No. Have you witnessed to anybody?" "No." You know, you got to start small. You can't You can't start uh on the platform, right? You got to start by telling your neighbor of the love of Jesus.
Did you know that Jesus loves you? I'd like to teach you a Bible study and and let you know what God has done in my life. He's done so many great things in my life. He has transformed me. He set me free. I used to be involved in this, that, and the other thing and and now God has set me free from all that stuff. Can I just share with you the love of God? You You know, he loves you. Well, okay. We need to get basic.
We need to start simple. We need to start small. We need to start with something to show that God is working in me. A- A- If you've got If you've got the fire of the word in you, if you've got the fire of the Holy Ghost in you, if you've got that fire burning in you, you're going to go to Jerusalem. You're going to go to Judea. You're going to go to Samaria. You're going to go to the uttermost parts of the earth. God's going to constrain you.
He's going to compel you. He's going to make you so that you you just can't keep silent anymore. Praise God. That's just my pastoral perspective, I guess, on that point. First, witness. I will be a witness to people I know and like. Who is my circle of people that Pentecost can influence? Pentecost can reach. Praise God. And we are out of time here. I've gone so long with all all these points that I didn't get to all my points, but praise the Lord anyway. Hallelujah. >> >> We're We're going to We're going to jump to the end here and and just look at it.
The The spirit moved on all of these disciples to go out and to do the ministry in all of those areas. Amen. Reaching the uttermost Reaching the uttermost. God's God's calling us to reach the uttermost. Praise the Lord. Let's all stand to today and and we'll go ahead and close here. Geography without Pentecost is willpower. Pentecost without geography is unused power. But Jesus gave us both. He wants the Pentecostal experience to be not just a transplant of a new personality, a new character, but it is the working of the Holy Ghost with us.
He works with us. He helps us. He transforms us. The introvert is not asked to become something that he's not. He's not being asked to be an extrovert. The introvert is asked to be filled with his spirit. Amen. Can you seek to be filled with his spirit and do the work that God has called you to do, to go from glory to glory, to seek his face? Praise God. It requires us to get in that our our own personal upper room, our own personal Pentecost, to have it for ourselves.
We can't rely on our our neighbor, our brother, our pastor, the preachers in the church. We need to be infused with Pentecost once again. How long has it been since you spoke in tongues? How long has it been since you found God in a altar, found God in a place of prayer privately, found an encounter with God in that in that secret place, in that upper room? So that he can endue us with power from on high, from glory to glory, from glory to glory. His presence is working with us, working in us.
Pentecost is wanting to be in this place today. Pentecost wants to come to 901 Barracks View. Praise God today. Pentecost wants to come down in this place. Will you let him move? Will you let him work? Will you let him infuse us with a transformation that gives us that boldness that we need, that gives us the power of the Holy Ghost that we need today? Can we love him right now? Can we thank him and praise him? Thank you, Jesus. We need your spirit, Lord. In Jesus' name.
Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Thank you, Jesus. Thank you, Lord. We give you the praise, God. We ask that you would move upon us today. We ask that you would infuse us, Lord, with power from on high, Lord. We thank you, Jesus. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Give us boldness in the Holy Ghost. Thank you, Jesus. Move upon us, Lord, by your spirit, Lord. We thank you, Jesus. Hallelujah. Have your way, Jesus. Thank you, Lord. Thank you, God. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Let's give the Lord a hand clap of praise right now. Praise you, Jesus.
Hallelujah. Amen. God bless you.
