Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

Opening Praise and a Life Built on the Book

  • The service opens in praise: there is no place like the presence of the Lord, and we are complete in him, not because of a building.
  • The lesson's subject is connecting with God through his word — one of the ways of connecting with God the class has been considering.
  • The teacher tells how he learned his machinist trade largely by reading: a book on the foundations of mechanical accuracy showed him how to apply the geometry and trigonometry he had once thought useless.
  • He gave that book to those apprenticing under him, and years later found that none of them had read it — they aspired to the work but were not building the foundation needed to grasp its complexities.
  • Long before that, he had been introduced to a more important book: at the age of five his mother had him quote Isaiah 9:6 to his grandmother, and as children the family held scripture hunts and learned memory verses in Sunday school.
  • If that trade book changed the trajectory of his career, the Bible has changed the trajectory of his life more than anything else — yet many fail to build their lives on the foundation of the word of God the way his co-workers failed to build on theirs.

Scriptures: Isaiah 9:6

A Book Like No Other

  • Ordinary books — encyclopedias, dictionaries, novels, textbooks, cookbooks — are compilations of human thought and opinion, written by men about things men know.
  • Even the sacred writings of other religions are the fruit of human reasoning: what man thinks about God, limited to the human perspective, when what we need to know is what God thinks.
  • Through the fall, our spiritual vision has been blurred; without God and his word we do not see ourselves as God sees us, and we do not even recognize that blindness.
  • Other religions promote self-improvement and good works, but the Bible alone speaks of a Savior — it is the only book that talks about the answers for sin.

God-Breathed, Living, and Abiding Forever

  • Paul said in 2 Timothy 3:16 that all scripture is given by inspiration of God — literally God-breathed, what he desired; it is not the thoughts of men but the word of God.
  • Peter called it the word of God which liveth and abideth forever: it is not an outdated manuscript, and it is just as powerful today as the day it was spoken.
  • The word is forever present — living in the here and now, applicable to every situation in our lives — and it gives life to those who receive it.

Scriptures: 2 Timothy 3:16

The Transforming Power of the Word

  • The psalmist found comfort in affliction because the word had quickened him — made him alive; the promises of the word come alive in our situations.
  • Paul connects the word to the transformed life in Romans 10: how shall they call on one they have not believed in, believe without hearing, or hear without a preacher — so faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
  • When the word of God goes forth and is received in faith, lives are transformed — for salvation and for the other situations of life, as faith stirs and that word comes alive and works.

Scriptures: Psalms 119:50; Romans 10

Read the Word

  • The first way we approach the word is to read it: a book does little good as a decoration on a shelf, and everyone who desires to know God should read his book.
  • Reading may seem demanding at first — 'thou shalt' and 'thou shalt not' express God's claims on us — and it convicts us of things our society embraces; that is the word trying to work in our lives, and the answer is to keep reading and grow.
  • Reading can also seem dry: his son Luke, working his way through the Bible, read the offerings of Numbers 7 and observed that every tribe gave the same thing — but the counsel is not to get discouraged, because the more you read, the easier it becomes and the more you understand.
  • With openness, the word comes alive: Old Testament things are seen fulfilled in the New, and the reader reaches the psalmist's delight in the law of the Lord.
  • David's ode to the word in Psalm 19:7 declares the law of the Lord perfect, converting the soul, the testimony sure, making wise the simple — more to be desired than gold and sweeter than honey — because meditation on the word showed him how God works.

Scriptures: Numbers 7; Psalms 19:7; Psalms (book-only, as spoken)

Hear the Word

  • We also need to hear the word, not only read it: the writer of Hebrews reminds us the word of God is quick and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the thoughts and intents of the heart.
  • Isaiah said the word becomes seed to the sower and bread to the eater; through anointed preaching and teaching God gets thoughts through to us that we miss when we read alone.
  • Only the anointed, preached, and taught word of the Lord can cope with the problems of this life — hearing the word is as important as reading it.

Scriptures: Hebrews (book-only, as spoken); Isaiah (book-only, as spoken)

Understand the Word: Study, Sound Tools, and Teachers

  • Reading is not always understanding, so study it: Paul admonished Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:15 to study to show himself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed — and study means diligence and effort, not passing a test.
  • Use the helps available — apps, websites, books, a good Bible dictionary — but be careful of sources, because many are misleading.
  • Get a good translation rather than a paraphrase: some versions are interpretations rather than translations of the original language, and when something sounds good in another version, check it against a solid translation before building doctrine on it.
  • He warns against using AI to answer Bible questions: when he tested one by asking who Jesus is, using only the Bible, it answered with a statement that appears nowhere in the Bible, drawn from sources beyond it.
  • Beginners do best by hearing good teaching first and then searching the scriptures to prove it, as those in Berea did after they heard the message.
  • In Acts 26's account, Philip heard a man from Ethiopia reading Isaiah in his chariot and asked, 'You understand what you're reading?' and the man answered, 'How can I understand except some man should guide me?' — we need teachers, which is why there are Bible studies and Christian education.
  • Teaching is woven through scripture: Israel was told to teach the word diligently to their children, one of Jesus' most common titles was Rabbi — teacher — and an early qualification of a minister was to be apt to teach.

Scriptures: 2 Timothy 2:15; Acts 26

Understand the Word: Led by the Holy Ghost

  • Understanding also requires the Holy Ghost: pray and seek God as you read his word.
  • Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 2 that his preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that faith would stand not in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.
  • Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it entered into the heart of man what God has prepared — but God has revealed them by his Spirit, who searches the deep things of God; the natural man cannot know the things of the Spirit because they are spiritually discerned.
  • Jesus promised in John 16:13 that when the Spirit of truth is come, he will guide you into all truth — yet the Spirit will not lead in ways contrary to scripture, and an interpretation completely different from everything else should be treated with care.

Scriptures: 1 Corinthians 2; John 16:13

Do the Word

  • Reading, hearing, and studying are not enough if we do not do it: Jesus likened whoever hears his sayings and does them to a wise man who built his house on a rock, which stood when the rains, floods, and winds came, while the hearer who does not do them is the foolish man whose house on the sand fell.
  • Both men heard the words; one followed them and one went his own way — hearing the word is not enough, it must be accompanied by doing the word of God.
  • James concurs in James 1:22: be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves — like a man who beholds his face in a mirror, goes away, and forgets what manner of man he was.
  • Whoever looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, not a forgetful hearer but a doer, shall be blessed.

Scriptures: James 1:22

Share the Word

  • Finally, after reading, hearing, studying, and doing, share the word: long-time hearers who say they don't know enough overlook that most people know nothing about this book at all.
  • We tend to witness to people who already go to church somewhere else — and we should reach them, explaining the word more perfectly as with Apollos — but someone who knows nothing is a gold mine.
  • He tells of riding to work with a young man named Keith: near Easter he explained what Easter is actually about — the death, burial, and resurrection — and Keith had had no idea.
  • The lesson closes in prayer: thankfulness for the word of truth, and a resolve not to stop at reading, understanding, and hearing, but to study, ingest, do, and share the word.

Thank you, Lord. If that's how you feel, why don't you just give him a praise from your heart tonight? Lord, we want more of you. Hallelujah. No place, Lord, than to be in your presence.

Hallelujah. to feel your touch, Lord. To feel your love, your grace, your mercy. Hallelujah. Hallelujah.

There is nothing like the presence of the Lord, is there? Amen. To come into his presence. Man, I thought as we were singing that song, it said, "There's no place I'd rather be." And then it said, "Here in your love." Because we are complete where? In him.

Doesn't have anything to do with a building or anything else. It has to do getting in the presence of the Lord. And that's what we've come to do tonight. Amen. Why don't you just give him another thanksgiving for your heart?

Hallelujah. So thankful Lord for your love, for your goodness, your mercy, your grace to me, Lord. Hallelujah. You are worthy. You are holy.

You are mighty. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Thank you, Jesus. Thank you, Jesus.

Thank you, Jesus. Man, it feels good to be in his presence, doesn't it? Amen. There's nothing like it. Nothing like it.

Jesus name. You can be seated. I'm not going to read a get situated here. I'm not going to read a text tonight, although obviously we'll be looking at the word of the Lord. In fact, that is our subject matter tonight.

We're going to talk about the word of the Lord. We've been talking about connecting with God, different ways that we do that. And one of those ways is connecting through his word. Through his word. So, some of you may know that I'm a machinist by trade.

I've spent about the last 43 years building ever more accurate tooling for automotive and agriculture, aerospace, medical, HBAC, all different kinds of things. About the last 30 of those I've spent building tooling for various areas of the nuclear field. And just lost my notes here. In the last 20 or so, I've sp spent building some of the most accurate equipment possible for our national lab system. So ask, well, how did you learn that trade?

I've been asked that before. Well, largely by reading books, particular in the 90s, early 90s, I bought a book that was entitled the foundations of mechanical accuracy. I know that sounds exciting, but it showed me how to apply all those boring things we learned in high school like geometry and trigonometry that that you know the things that you looked at and you said where am I ever going to use this and then I find I used it all the time and suddenly those subjects you know that I felt that way became very important. So the important was this book to my understanding of what I was doing that a few years ago I gave a copy to uh those that were apprenticing under me and four years later I found out that none of them have read it yet. Although they aspired aspire to do the kind of work that we do they aren't building that foundation that you need to grasp its complexities.

Now now why did I tell you that story? Not because anything about me, but because many years before the 90s, I was in introduced to an even more important book. And that book was the Bible. At the age of five, I can remember going to my grandma's house and my mom having me quote Isaiah 9:6 to her. She had taught it to me.

At eight or nine, we would sit in our living room with my sisters and brother, and we would have scripture hunts, see who could find the scriptures the quickest. We also played a game where my mom would start reading from. She'd open the book and just start reading and we'd have to try to find where she was reading at. So, you kind of had to know kind of where things were and flip through it. So, we looked at the word of God uh see who could find it the quickest.

Of course, we learned memory verses in Sunday school classes and we got bread charts to help us read through the Bible in one year, although I do admit I was 18 before I ever completed one of those. But um looking at at those different things. So if if the foundations of mechanical accuracy changed the trajectory of my career, I think it's safe to say the Bible has changed the trajectory of my life more than anything else. There is no other book that will do what this book can do. There's nothing like it, church.

But just as my co-workers have failed to build their career on the foundation that was handed to them, many failed to build their lives on the foundation of the word of God. You know, it's easy to come to church and and to get in his presence and feel his love and all those kind of things that we just sang about and that is important and we must do that. But it's also important to let him get his word into us as we get into his word. We have to have it. The Bible is unique.

There's no book like this. It's well named. The book is the Bible which simply means book. Of course, it's not just a book. It's a holy book or holy Bible.

Nothing like that. Now, what's so different about the Bible? A book is just typically a compilation of human thought or opinion, ideas. Uh, literary forms vary different ways. Encyclopedia obviously is much different if they still have those is much different than a dictionary or a novel or work of fiction or textbook, a cookbook.

A lot of different books, a lot of different things that we can look at. Yeah. Yeah. All of those when we think about it are really accessible through human research and opinions. They're written by men about things that men know.

And even the sacred writings of some of the world's religions, which from the chart, I see we'll look at those sometime later in the year, are the fruit of human reasoning. You know, they're they're what man grasps or thinks he understands about God. Maybe lofty thoughts about nature or life or other things, but but they're limited because they have no vantage point behind beyond the human perspective. It's not what we think, it's what God thinks. And so many other religions and many other books will talk tell you about what man thinks about our situations and what man thinks you should do and what man thinks.

We need to know what God thinks and that's what this Bible does. The rebellion of human of course we know through the fall in the book of Genesis. We we learn through that that it has blurred our spiritual vision and and we don't see ourselves if we're not careful. We don't see ourselves as God sees us. You know, it's always when when we look around without God and without his word that I can be better and I can do this and I can do that and and we completely forget that really we can only do what God allows us.

The problem is compounded by the fact that that we don't recognize that blindness. We go through life if we're not careful, not even realizing, as one man I worked with used to say all the time, you don't know what you don't know. You don't even know. You don't understand. and you're blind to that.

And so, while other religions may promote all these self-improvements and good works and different kinds of things, the Bible only speaks of a savior. It is the only religion, it is the only book that talks about the answers for sin. It is a book like no other. And it is true that it is not the thoughts of men. It is the word of God.

Paul informed us in 2 Timothy 3:16 that all scripture is given by inspiration of God. It is literally God breathed. It is what he desired. And so the word of God is is very important for us. The word of God, Peter called it.

He said it the word of God that lives forever, which liveth and abideth forever. I think that's important. This Bible when we look at it said you read the Bible. It it's not an outdated manuscript. It's not something that's old and and will go away.

It is alive. He said it is alive. It is just as powerful today as the day was when it was spoken or or when the prophet declared, "Hear ye the word of the Lord or thus sayeth the word of the Lord." It is just as real today. And not only is it alive, but it gives life to those who receive it. You won't get that from a self-help book.

You might get some good ideas and you might I'm not saying that everything out there is not worth reading. There's a lot of good ideas and a lot of good. But when you want to know what God wants, the word of God is the only way. Peter said it not only lives, he said, but it liveth and it abides forever. Several translations use the word endures there.

It endures forever. It continues. But perhaps more accurately it would be to say it is forever present. It's living and it is abiding. It is living in our lives.

It lives in the present tense. The word of God lives in the here and now. It is applicable to every situation in our life. Not from yesterday or not for somebody 50 years ago. It is alive today.

I'm thankful the lifechanging power of the gospel works today just as it did in the book of acts. It is not diminished one bit. It is living and it is abiding for ever. That brings us to the next point and that is the word of God not only is living and is alive. It has a transforming power about it.

It can change a life. What's so different about the Bible? It's abiding message and it's transforming power. You can read the word of the Lord and you can speak his word and you can pray his word and you can and things happen. The psalmist said in 1190 he said, "This is my comfort in my affliction for your word hath quickened me.

It's made me alive." That's what that word means. I take comfort in the inflictions, the thing I go through because the word of God will come alive in my life and in my situation. Thankful for the promises of word. Paul makes this connection between the word and that transformation and the transformed life in Romans 10. He said, "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." And then he said, "Well, how does that happen?

How do you call on someone that you haven't believed in? And how you will you believe if you haven't heard it and how you will hear without a preacher and then he concludes and preacher of what? The word of God. He said so then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. So it changes your life.

How are we saved? Through the word. The word of God. The transforming power of the word. When the word of God goes forth, those that receive it in faith are transformed by its power.

When a word of faith is preached not only for salvation but for other situations and the word of God goes forth, faith stirs in our hearts and that word comes alive and it will work and it will answer. Aren't you thankful to know the word of God? That's all right. Go ahead and thank him for it. Lord, so thankful for that word that is alive.

That that word that is real that it is here in this place tonight working Lord and touching our hearts. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. So seeing that it is a living word and it is an abiding word and that it is a transforming word, how do we approach the word? We do so in in a few different ways.

And I think the first most obvious one is read it. Read it. Book does little good when it's just there for a decoration. Put it on your shelf. I always wondered about lawyers, you know, when they had that whole bookcases full.

I wonder how many of those you've actually read. might pull one out every once in a while when somebody reference it and you say, "Oh, I wonder what that was." And go look it up and and see. But I seriously doubt they've read all those. I will say I try to do that. I have books and when I buy one, I try to read it all and have a fair amount of books, but I I do try to read them.

I don't want to buy them just for, well, that's just for reference. I'll look something up in it every once in a while. It's to read. And just as my co-workers should have read the book I gave them. Everyone who desires to know God should read his book.

I've heard people say, "Well, I don't know about all that Christian thing. I don't know about this. I don't know about Have you ever read the Bible?" I've looked at it. Would you ever read it all? Probably not.

Read it and you will learn. Sister Jan Janet Trout recorded a record back in the late 70s early 80s and she one of the songs said this. How can you know the way to go if you never read the book? The road map is there. The way is clear but you got to take a look.

So look into the word of the Lord. Read it. Now, now there they're there different I I realize the Bible it is unique and so there are some things about reading the word of God that will come to your attention. The first is if you're looking at it for the first time it probably seems a bit demanding. Thou shalt.

Thou shalt not. It's God's voice. It expresses his claims on us. And we must rely on the Bible really if we want to live for him. And yes, there are dos and don'ts.

There are things that sometimes when I read it, it condemns many things that our society embraces and and it convicts us. But here's the thing. As you read it, if it begins to do that and say, "Well, I you know, there's people that will look at and say, I don't want to read that book because I feel bad." Well, that's a word of God trying to work in your life. It's trying to straighten some things out. If it convicts us, remember it's God's plan, not ours.

It's his way of salvation, not the way I see it. And if we find that you don't enjoy it at first, here's what you need to do. Just keep reading. Keep reading. You'll grow.

You'll understand. You'll see why he said what he said. So stay in the word of God. Second, sometimes, and I'll admit that, and everyone will, sometimes reading may seem a little bit dry and difficult to ingest. may not always enjoy the context.

I understand it's a book, big book. We've all read it. All who have read it understand that sometimes it can be a little bit tedious. Doesn't mean not to read it. I I got to tell this story.

My son Luke is working his way through the Bible and he was reading in Numbers chapter 7. I don't know if any of you know what chapter 7 is about. They had built an altar and they brought an offerings for the altar. Let me just give you a little taste. So the tribe of Judah brings their offering.

Verse 13 of chapter 7. And his offering was, get this, one silver charger. The weight thereof was 130 shekels. One silver bowl of 70 shekels after the shekele of the sanctuary. Both of them were full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meat offering.

It goes on, a spoon of 10 se shekels of gold full of incense, one bull, one ram, one lamb of the first year, one kid of the goats for a sin offering. And then it goes to the next guy, Issachar. Guess what his offering was? He offered for his offering one silver charger. The weight thereof was 130 shekels.

One silver bowl of 70 shekels after the shank shekele the sanctuary. Both of them full of fine flour mingled with oil for the meat offering, a spoon of gold of tin shekels, full of incense, a bull, a ram, a lamb, goats. On the third day, Zebulun offered a silver charger the way it was 13. And Luke looks up and he says, "They all gave the same thing. Why didn't it just say they all gave this?" It's brilliant, Luke.

But it's a Bible, so read all of them. We understand that that sometimes, you know, it can be a dry, but but take don't get discouraged. The more you read it, the easier it will become and the the more you will understand get through there. There there's a lot in this book. The key is don't get discouraged.

The other thing is we need an openness to the very word of God. We need to understand what don't don't just take it because it's good for you. That's the added. Well, I guess I have to or it's dry, but it's wholesome, so I'll get through it. Yes, I understand it can.

But beyond that, the more we read it and the more we grow in him, there will become a time when the word of God will come alive to you and you will begin to see things from the Old Testament that are fulfilled in the New Testament. And from the New Testament, you will look back at the Old Testament and say, "Here's what this was talking about." A and you will begin to love that word of God. The Psalmist said, "His delight is in the law of the Lord, and in his law does he meditate day and night." That's where you want to get to, where the word of God just becomes alive. And and that's where we find David in his beautiful ode to the word in Psalm 19:7. He said this, "The law of the Lord is perfect.

It converts the soul. The testimony of the Lord, it's sure. It makes wise the simple. The statutes are right. They rejoice the heart.

The commandments are pure and they enlighten your eyes. And the fear of the Lord is clean and it endures forever. And the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. And so there are more to be desired are they than gold, yay, than much fine gold, sweeter also than honey in the honeycomb. Why?

Because he had meditated on this word and he began to put it together and he began to see how God works and what God wanted out of his life. And when he looked at, he said, "It's perfect. It will convert me. It will change me. It will make me what God wants me to be." So read the word.

Read the word. Second thing we need to do, you need to hear the word. It's not always times when we read it for ourselves, but there are times we need to hear the word. The writer of Hebrews remind us, you ever notice how the word of God works? It is the Bible said it is quick and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword piecing piercing even to the dividing of sunder of soul and spirit joints and marer of the thoughts and the intense of the heart.

You see we don't reach God through our thinking and our investigation. Well, I can figure this out for myself and I'll do that. But but as his word goes forth and it settles on the ground of our life, Isaiah said it becomes seed to the sewer and bread to the eater and it it soaks in through anointed preaching and teaching that comes across the pulpit. And through the ministry of the word, God is able to get thoughts to us and through to us. You know, sometimes our human nature, it's not always easy.

And and sometimes when we read it for ourselves, we miss things. And then we hear someone talk about it or preach about it or something from the word and they pull it out and begin to talk and and and it begins to stir our hearts. So we need to hear the word of God, not just read the word of God. I'm thankful for a church that still believes in Bible preaching. Not just a 10-minute homaly, but we get in the word of God and say, "You know what?

Here's what thus sayeth the word of the Lord. Here's what you need to change your life. Here's what you need today from the word of God to change you. Only the anointed, preached, and taught word of the Lord can cope with the problems and the things of this life. Hearing the word is as important as reading the word.

So, we've talked about the uniqueness of the power of the word, the fact that it is alive. We looked at the importance of reading it and hearing it. It's also important not that just that we read it, but that we understand the word of God. And we hear a lot of the word of God. We hear it when we preach and we we read it.

And I don't know about you, but you ever read something and you stopped yourself and said, "What did I just read?" And you go back and you read it again. And what? And read it a third time. And you read it maybe not so much of the word of God. maybe with the word of God, but you know, sometimes our minds are some somewhere and you read something and say, "What did I just miss?" Sometimes that does happen with the word of God as well.

So, so here's some ways to help us understand what we read. Now, the first one's pretty straightforward. Study it. Look at it. Study and see what it has to say.

Paul admonished Timothy. 2 Timothy 2:15, you need to study to show yourselves approved unto God. Not that you're trying to pass a test, but that you might present yourself to God is what that term means there. You need to be a workman that needs not to be ashamed. A workman.

You have to work at studying the word of God. Work at it. The stud the word study is translated that means to give diligence or to make haste to to apply yourself to really look into that. Study takes time and it takes effort. Put some effort into understanding God's word.

Understand the things that we teach and that you believe. Get in the word of God and find it for yourself. Put some effort into understanding it. Now, I'm thankful there's all kinds of ways you can do that. There are apps you can use on your phone.

There are websites. There are books. or Bible studies helps. Let me give you a warning. Unfortunately, there are many that are misleading as well.

You need to be careful of the sources you use. Start with a Bible. Get you a good Bible dictionary, maybe some things to search it with. Of course, you can do a lot of that on your on your phone or on an app. One of the important things you need to do is get you a good Bible translation.

Translation not Bible paraphrase. I'm not going to preach that you can't use a paraphrase. They're okay. But there are many Bibles that are not translations. They're not translations of the original language.

They're just an interpretation of here's how I understood it. So that's how I wrote it down. Not all of them are accurate to the texts. I typically use a King James Bible. I know a lot of lot of lot of us don't.

Um, I do because I'm old. I've read it read it over and over and I can quote it and I can't quote the other ones. Some of its English is is archaic, you know, and I know thou understand it that Bibles like the New King James took the King James and took some of those words out of there and changed them a little bit more modern English. And I don't have a problem with that. Um, there are some other Bibles.

I won't go through a list of them. I do try to avoid ones that that are just completely trying to be modern and popular, such as I I won't say it because I've heard heard people mention it, but there are some. What I'm saying is get a good translation. And I'm not saying don't read the other ones, but when it comes to doctrine, make sure you're in a good solid trans so that you know. And when you read something that sounds good from one of the other versions, go and make sure that's really what it says and really what it means.

We'll just leave that at that. But here's another one I want to bring up. Don't use, and I know everybody's going on this fad. Don't use AI to answer your questions about the Bible. Can I say that, pastor?

Don't use AI to answer questions about your Bible. there. I tried this the other day. I typed into one of them. Who is Jesus?

Using only the Bible as your source comes back the third person of the Trinity. That is a word and a statement that isn't made anywhere in the Bible. Now, they could have said, "Well, he was someone that was born in Jerusalem and he lived, you know, walked through Galilee that he preached." Where did you get that from? You didn't get it from the Bible. So, the AI bot obviously was looking at a lot of different things besides what I So, don't look there.

If you really want to dig deep and and if reading it and studying it with what you've got is enough, there is some good Bible software as well. You can see me and I can recommend some or pastoral staff. There there's a lot of good things out there that you can use. But here's the thing. Get a good foundation by studying the word of God.

Now, let me give you another prerequisite. The first way to build that strong scriptural foundation is to hear some good teaching because you're probably first time reading through not going to figure it all out yourself. Here's what they did in the book of Acts. They heard the message, those in Berea, and they said, "Huh, let me go check that out." And then they went to the after after they heard the good solid teaching, they went to the Bible and said, "Let me prove that yes, it does say that." Let me just tell when if you're starting out learning the word of God, that is your best way to do it. Rest assured, none of us know it all.

None of us know everything about this book. It's why we love it so much because there's just so much more we can learn and so many gems and jewels you pull out and say, "Wow." But the Bible gives us an example. The angel of the Lord spake unto Philillip in Acts chapter 26 and he said, "Arise, go to the south, the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, heading toward the Philistines were, which is desert. And he arose and he went and behold there was this man from Ethiopia who had come to Jerusalem to worship and he was returning and he was sitting in his chariot reading Isaiah. And the spirit said unto Philillip, "Go near, join yourself to the chariot." And Philip ran hither.

He heard him reading Isaiah. And he said, "You understand what you're reading?" The man looked at him and said, "Well, how can I understand except some man should guide me? We need some guidance. That's why we have Wednesday night Bible studies. That's why we have Christian education.

The first need is to have a teacher. You won't get it all by yourself. You need a teacher. I need a teacher. When God first made himself known to Israel, true one and living God, what did he do?

Pastor Brad could tell us. I've heard him say it over and over, right? You shall teach them diligently to your children. We need to hear the word of the Lord. One of Jesus' most common titles that we read in the in the Bible, rabbi.

Word means teacher. Jesus taught. He taught the people. The church, one of the early church, one of the qualifications of minister was to be apt to teach. Teaching the word of God.

And as we read earlier in 2 Timothy 3:16 that scripture it is profitable for doctrine. It is profitable for teaching and to learning. The other thing we need in understanding is we need the Holy Ghost when we read the word of God. Pray as you read the word of God. Seek God as you read his word.

I don't think anyone said it better than Paul in first Corinthians. We read one of the verses. I'm going to look at that passage 1 Corinthians chapter 2 beginning at verse 4. He said, "When I came to you, Corinth, my speech, my preaching, it wasn't with enticing words of man's wisdom." So, he wasn't just quoting all the wise men of his day, but it came I came in demonstration of the spirit and in power. And here's why.

That your faith and faith comes by what? By hearing and hearing by the word of God. that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. So it's not how clever we can be, it's how anointed we are. That's what makes the difference.

He said, "But as is written, eye hasn't seen, ear hasn't heard, it hasn't entered into the heart of man the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God has revealed them unto us by his spirit. So man hasn't seen it. Man hasn't heard it. It hasn't even entered into man's heart the things that God has.

But God will reveal them to us. For the Spirit searchth all things, yay, the deep things of God. He said, even so, the things of God knows no man but the spirit of God. talking about carnal men. They don't know it without the spirit.

Now, we have it. We have received not the spirit of the world, but what we have is the spirit which is of God that we may know the things that are freely given to us. The natural man does not receive the things of the spirit. They are foolishness and he cannot know them. They are spiritually discerned.

You need to pray and read the word in the spirit. Let the Holy Ghost lead and open the word to you. Remember the words of Jesus. He said in John 16:13, "How be it, when he, the Spirit of truth is come, that Holy Ghost, he will guide you into all truth. For he shall not speak of himself, but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak.

He will show you things to come." The Spirit will lead you. Now, I will say it will not lead you in ways that are out of line with scripture. will not lead you in places that are contrary to everyone. You know the Bible says the scripture is not of any private interpretation. So if your idea when you read it is completely different than everything else, be careful.

Get some teaching. So read it, let it impact you, listen to good preaching, listen to good teaching. Study the word of God. Let the spirit lead you. And so, we've emphasized all these things, but we can't stop there because both Jesus and James made it clear that none of that is enough if you don't do it.

This isn't a book just to read so that you can quote it, so that you can talk about it. It's a book you read so you can do it. Jesus said, "Whosoever hears these sayings of mine and doeth them liken unto a wise man build his house on a rock, on a firm foundation. Rains descend, floods come, winds blow, beat the house, and it's still standing because it's founded on a rock." What rock? He read the word and he's doing the word.

And everyone that hears these sayings of mine and does not do them, he shall be like a foolish man which built his house on the sand. The rain descended, the floods came, the winds blew beat upon the house, and it fell, and great was the fall thereof. Noticed they both heard the words of Jesus. This one heard it and followed it. This one heard it and went his own way.

One remains, one is destroyed. Hearing of the world is word is not enough. It must be accompanied by doing the word of God. James concurs in James 1:22. He said this, "Be ye doers of the word and not hearers only.

If you do," he said, you're deceiving your own selves. You're not fooling God. You're not fooling anyone else. If you've heard the word and it says here's what you need to do and you choose to go another the only person you're deceiving is yourself. He said for if any be a hearer of the world and not word and not a doer he's like a man that beholds his natural face in a glass.

In other words, he looks in a mirror. He beholdeth himself and he goes away and he forgets what manner of man he was. look in the mirror and say, "Hey, you, you need to be doing this." And walk away and say, "I'm going to live it the way I want to." That's what he said because you're not doing. But whosoever looks into this perfect law of liberty and continuous in it. He's not a forgetful hearer, but a doer.

That man shall be blessed. So read it, hear it, study it, do all these things, but do it. And then finally, as we end, and you can stand if you'd like. After you've done all, there's something else we need to do with this word. You need to share it.

I'm looking at some people that have been around here a long time. I know because I was there. And for us to say, "Well, I just don't think I know enough." Really? Do you realize most people don't know anything about this book? and you've heard it all your life and you say, "Well, I don't think I can teach that.

At what point can you if you can't do it now? You've heard it. You've studied it. You know it." And I thought I've thought about this and and maybe I shouldn't say this. I'm going to throw it out there.

You ever notice that the people we want to witness to are the ones that go to church somewhere else? Because we think, well, yeah, they know the Bible. Maybe I could show them a little bit that they're kind of wrong in the way they're thinking. And they're probably the ones that are going to debate with you. And I'm not saying don't try to reach them.

We should. You know, when an Apollos comes in, you need to explain the word of the Lord more perfectly to them. That's okay. But when you go to someone that knows nothing, you've got a gold mine. Tell one quick story and then I'll get out of the way.

Was riding to work with a young man. He was riding with me and after a few months it was getting close to Easter time and I thought, you know what? I'm just going to talk to him. We had about a 15 20 minute ride. I said, ' Keith, you you know Easter's coming up.' He said, 'Ye, I know.

Yeah, Easter bunnies, all that. I said, ' No, let me tell you what that's about. And I began to talk to him about the death and the burial and res. And he said, ' Really? That's what Easter is?

Had no idea. And we think you can't talk. Well, let me see. We need to talk about this and we need to get deep into here. Tell them who Jesus is.

And most of the world is not going to have a clue unless you're willing to read it, study it, hear it, and share it. Amen. Can we just stretch our hands to heaven and thank the Lord for the treasure we already have? Oh God, h I'm reminded tonight, I don't want to take for granted the word of truth. Lord, help me.

At the very least, I ought to read it and I ought to understand it and I ought to hear it, Lord. But also, I don't want to stop there. I I I want to I want to study your word and dive into your word and ingest your word. And also, I want to share be a doer and to share your word. And I thank you for that word of truth that I have the opportunity.

I'm among those who are most blessed because I know the word of truth. Thank you, Jesus. Thank you, Jesus. Thank you, Lord.
