Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
The Commission Texts: Baptism in the Plan of Salvation
- The lesson continues the plan-of-salvation study: after why salvation is needed (the cross) and last week's repentance, today is baptism.
- Four passages are read: Jesus' instructions to the disciples at the end of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, plus Peter's answer on the day of Pentecost.
- Baptism is one of the doctrines being overlooked today, treated by many as a mere rite of initiation that is not essential to salvation; the Bible, not tradition or opinion, is the only source that settles it.
- A person can have an incomplete salvation experience — repented, yet not baptized, or not yet having received the Holy Ghost.
- The biblical response to the gospel is to repent, be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and receive the Holy Ghost; a man must be born of water and of the Spirit to enter the kingdom of God.
Scriptures: Matthew 28; Mark 16; Mark 16:15-16; Luke 24:47; Acts 2:38
John's Baptism: Repentance, Immersion, Preparation
- The Bible introduces water baptism with John, the greatest prophet ever born, according to Jesus; his influence reached far beyond the Jordan, to disciples in Alexandria and Ephesus.
- John came preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; to be baptized was a public confession of having changed one's mind and turned toward God.
- Against the constant washings of the communities around the Dead Sea, John's single immersion in the Jordan pointed to a cleansing of the heart, preparing people for the coming Messiah.
- John completely immersed his converts — he baptized where there was much water, and Jesus came up out of the water; he did not sprinkle.
- John's baptism was preparation: he baptized with water unto repentance, and the one coming after him would baptize with the Holy Ghost and with fire.
Scriptures: Mark 1:4; John 3:25; John 3:23
Jesus Endorsed Baptism and Linked It to Salvation
- Jesus endorsed water baptism by his own example: though he knew no sin, he submitted to John's baptism to fulfill all righteousness.
- He commanded his disciples to teach all nations and baptize them, excluding no nation or people; if it were not essential, he would not have sent them everywhere to do it.
- He linked believing and baptism together: he that believes and is baptized shall be saved; one who does not believe will not be baptized either.
- Faith demands baptism as its expression, and baptism demands faith for its validity — believing involves acting on the belief.
- Baptism is identifying oneself with Jesus Christ and placing faith in the atoning work of the cross as the only place sins can be remitted.
Scriptures: Mark 16:16
The Apostolic Pattern in the Book of Acts
- At Pentecost the crowd asked what to do, and Peter answered: repent and be baptized for the remission of sins, and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost; about three thousand obeyed and were baptized.
- The Lord kept adding to the church, and everywhere the disciples preached the gospel they also baptized their converts — baptism was no option or addition.
- Philip baptized men and women in Samaria, and then baptized the Ethiopian who asked what hindered him when they came to water.
- At the house of Cornelius the Holy Ghost fell on the hearers, yet Peter still commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord.
- Paul likewise questioned disciples about their baptism and re-baptized those who had only John's baptism, in the name of Jesus.
Scriptures: Acts 2; Acts 2:47; Acts 8; Acts 10; Acts 9
The Mode: the Word Itself Means Immersion
- The mode matters: some immerse, some pour, some sprinkle — and the scripture can settle the difference.
- Baptism is a transliterated Greek word, baptizo, meaning to dip, plunge, or immerse — as a garment dipped in dye or a cup pushed under water comes up full.
- The word was left untranslated when the Bible was rendered into English because rendering it 'immerse' would have contradicted the pouring and sprinkling then practiced.
- The Catholic Encyclopedia itself says the most ancient form was unquestionably immersion, prevailing in some places into the sixteenth century before pouring and sprinkling gradually prevailed in the western church.
- Baptism is also a type of burial: the gospel is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, and a burial means completely covering — a sprinkling of dirt on the head is not a burial.
The Formula: Baptism in the Name of Jesus
- The scriptures record no single occasion of anyone baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost; those are titles, not a name.
- The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia notes that no record of a trinitarian formula appears in Acts or the epistles; in apostolic times the shorter formula, the name of Jesus, was the usual one.
- The three thousand at Pentecost, Cornelius and his house, and the Samaritans were all baptized in the name of Jesus or the Lord Jesus.
- Jesus said repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, and the apostles plainly understood his words in Matthew, Mark, and Luke that way.
Scriptures: Acts 19
Ephesus: from John's Baptism to the Fullness of Truth
- Paul asked the disciples he found at Ephesus whether they had received the Holy Ghost, and his very next question was, unto what then were you baptized — showing how important he held baptism to be.
- They had been baptized unto John's baptism: they had repented and turned to God, and Paul commended that step rather than condemning it.
- Paul put their baptism in perspective: John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe on the one who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
- Many today stand in the same place — they repented and were baptized as they were told, but every decision toward God should be followed into the fullness of truth the scripture shows.
- When the disciples heard Paul, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus: baptism not administered by immersion in Jesus name is a baptism unto repentance, but only baptism in his name expresses faith solely in him.
Scriptures: Acts 19:1-5
What Baptism Does — and the Closing Appeal
- Baptism is for the remission of sins: repentance brings forgiveness, but the debt must still be paid for; the forgiven debt in Jesus' parable was still outstanding until it was remitted.
- In baptism we are buried with him: the old man dies at repentance, and only then is burial appropriate — one who has not died out to sin merely goes down a dry sinner and comes up a wet one.
- Baptism applies the name of Jesus to our lives; we are bought with a price, and there is no other name under heaven whereby we must be saved.
- Peter said baptism saves us, pointing to Noah's day, when eight were saved by water: not a bath that puts away the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God.
- The appeal: examine the evidence, and if you have not repented and been baptized in Jesus name, do it, and let him fill you with the Holy Ghost; the lesson was offered by email to anyone who wants to study the points again.

we're going to look to his word we are studying the plan of salvation the last couple of lessons we looked at why we need why we need salvation and that is only in the cross of jesus christ last week we talked about repentance turning from sin turning to god changing our minds saying we want to live for god and today we're going to look at this principle of baptism we're going to look at baptism matthew chapter 28 i'm going to read from four passages all of these three of them are at the end of the gospels and one of them from the book of acts so from matthew mark and luke all basically talking about the same passage where jesus was instructing his disciples before he left and in 28 verse 16 he said this then the 11 disciples went away into galilee into a mountain where jesus had appointed them and when they had saw him they worshiped him we've just done that haven't we but for some reason some doubted and so jesus said unto them and spake saying all power is given unto me in heaven and in earth go ye therefore teach all nations baptizing them in the name of the father and the son of the holy ghost and teach them to observe all things whatsoever i have commanded you and lo i am with you alway even unto the end of the world amen mark chapter 16 verses 15 and 16 and he said unto them go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved but he that believeth not shall be damned and then from luke 24 verse 47 jesus said in that repentance and remissions of sins he told them should be preached in his name among all nations beginning at jerusalem and of course acts 2 38 we have to throw that in there right as peter's standing on the day of pentecost he looks at the crowd and he says here's what you need to do you need to repent you need to be baptized every one of you in the name of jesus christ for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the holy ghost amen we'll talk about that in a couple weeks on pentecost sunday so we're going to look today at baptism one thing i've noticed when you look at current ecumenical trends you look at this world around us today at least the religious world there's just a lot less passion felt about bible doctrine in fact that just kind of overlooked doctrine let's just talk positive let's look for some positive message out of that jesus spoke or something and and we'll forget about doctrine and well one of those doctrines is water baptism and one thing we see is that people look at it in many different ways there are some that look at water baptism and they say well it really doesn't mean a whole lot it's just something we do maybe a rite of initiation into the church but really it's not essential to your salvation it's just some added blessing if you will or just something else you can do and one bible dictionary says this are why are they different interpretations well i'm not sure why because i think the bible is pretty plain don't you when we look in fact we're going to look at that today and but here's the thing whatever the arguments or whatever the different opinion is there's really only one source right and that's this book we need to look to say what the word of god has to say not what man has done not what tradition has done not one anything else but what the word of god has to say and here's what else we know you cannot claim jesus christ as your lord and your savior at the same time failing to obey his word he said if you love me you'll do what keep my commandments so you'll do the things that i told you to do and so i think it is important to remember that it is possible for people to have an incomplete salvation experience they can have parts of it they can they can have repented of their sins and turn and say i'm going to follow god but they have not yet known what it meant means to be baptized and some maybe not know what it is to have the holy ghost or the holy spirit in their life and so the biblical response to the gospel is always to repent we talked about last week to be baptized in the name of jesus christ for their missions of sin and then to receive the holy ghost that is that plan of salvation anything less is just an incomplete i'm not saying they don't love god and we're not saying that they're not on their way or working towards god but this is the plan of salvation given in the bible in fact jesus talked and nicodemus said this except a man be born of water and of spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of god so it takes both a water birth and a spirit baptism to be saved you must be born of both now despite all these schools of thoughts i don't think it's really a complex subject i think it's pretty plain in scripture
if you happen to get up today and check your email i sent this entire lesson to all the emails i had for the class if you're not giving me an email and i don't have it then you didn't get it but it went out through the mybibleclass at hotmail.com so i sent this lesson because we're going to go over what baptism is how it's administered how it was taught in the bible see how how it was administered in the bible and i think when we look at it as a whole we'll see here is the bible approach you know traditional views are hard to break away from and for those that have heard it a different way or grown up under a different way we understand that and we're not condemning or not doing anything but we want to say here's what the bible has to say we want to look at it that way and if you will look at it that way with us if you're online if you're visiting whatever open your bible and follow along the new testament will make clear here's what baptism is all about so all doctrine we know must be based on scripture you can't make if it's not then it's man's doctrine or the devil's doctrine because god's doctrine is right here it's right here anything that is doctrine that is not here is not god's doctrine he said this is it this is complete this is this is what i teach and so the doctrine of water baptism in jesus name is no exception and we are accountable to embrace the scripture in what it has to say so we're going to look at first off the practice of john the baptist just as we did with repentance how jesus addressed baptism and then the apostles and then we'll look into some of the details about that john the bible tells us was a man sent from god and he earned a distinction being called by jesus jesus said john was the greatest prophet ever born now some of us might look at that and say really john the baptist because we look at isaiah who wrote all the beautiful passages about the messiah we look at elijah and elisha that did so many miracles we can look at ezekiel we can look at daniel who wrote so much about the last days and things that have not yet happened and the prophecies and and yet jesus said it was john the baptist and so when we look at john the baptist he didn't write a book he didn't there's no book of john the baptist in your bible it's not there there's just a few chapters in the gospels that talk about him and yet jesus points to him and is he is the greatest and i think sometimes we minimize john's influence but it was quite far-reaching when they met apollos apollos wasn't a disciple of john apollos lived in alexandria and egypt when paul was traveling through ephesus he met disciples and they were disciples of john so his influence went far beyond just the jordan area where he was baptizing but it went throughout quite a distance and quite a bit of land and so the bible introduces water baptism with john the baptist you don't see it in the old testament as far as baptism like john was doing it and john came preaching the bible says in mark 1 4 the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins and so the central theme of john's ministry was repentance and water baptism it was such an integral part it was so important to john's ministry that that's why they call him john the baptist because or the john the baptizer
there's an interesting question in john 3 25 said that some came to john and said there arose a question between some of john's disciples and the jews about purifying now it doesn't say a whole lot else but history will help fill in a little bit about that they were wondering john what is this about your baptism there's a question about jews and purifying and john baptizing you see in jesus day and in john the baptist day there were communities all around the dead sea and that's where the dead sea scrolls were found they're called the qumran communities and in those areas and where they were they were some really religious fanatics as how they were looked at in those days but they were extremely concerned with constant washings they had pools they had places and they were always worried about am i pure enough am i good enough and they were washing their flesh well john comes along and he said i'm going to baptize you but not in this nice clean pool that you've got over here we're going to go down to the muddy jordan and i'm just going to dip you in this water and it's only going to be once well how does that purify see they didn't understand that you know their idea was well you have to go in and you got to wash and be clean before you can go in and do it they were worried about a physical outside john's baptism and say no if you have repented from your sins i'm going to do it one time as an expression of your faith and you're going to go down for repentance to show that you are have turned from your evil ways and you're walking in a different life and so while they were concerned with the cleansing the flesh john was looking toward a cleansing of a heart of preparing the people's hearts for the coming messiah and it said he came into all the country about jordan preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins it's important that we understand this fact about john's baptism it was primarily that of repentance his baptism was a baptism of repentance and we're going to look at that thought here a little later on the lesson but but i want us to to take note of that that if repentance is a changing of your mind and that turning around and turning toward god john's baptism was a public confession that i've made that decision i'm going to follow god i'm turning around from my evil ways from sin whatever else and i'm going to go after god so the one baptized was saying in fact i've decided to change the course of my life and serve god and so i'm getting baptized so everyone knows that that was john's baptism one of the characteristics that we see immediately in john's baptism is that he completely immersed his converts in water in short he didn't sprinkle he dunked him i was reading a history of a prof not a prophet of a preacher that went throughout missouri and illinois a lot of in southern illinois went throughout indiana went through spent literally years on horseback and all kinds of weather is reading his history preaching holding camp meetings all around great revivals that they were having but he didn't like the idea of baptism and he called those that baptized dunkers and he was always arguing about the dunkers and i thought you know what you had so much but you just weren't quite there you know and so john baptized and when he did it's evident that he put people below the water's surface when he baptized jesus it said they both came out of the water further the place said john was in john 3 23 it said john was baptizing there because there was much water now he didn't just go down to the jordan and just grab a little container fill it up with water and say okay this is good enough i got enough i can go and i can go anywhere and i'll just start baptizing you just dump a little out and sprint no he said i gotta have water because if i'm gonna baptize you're gonna have to go under and so as far as we can see the practice concerning john the evidence from the scripture supports immersion in addition to his example john's baptism was a preparation from the promise of the messiah to come he said i'm baptizing you with water under repentance the one that's coming after me is mightier than i whose shoes i'm not worthy to bear he's going to baptize you with the holy ghost and with fire so it was that preparation the teaching and example of john the baptist clearly lays this groundwork for new testament baptism here's what it is it is immersion as the mode of water baptism we'll talk again about that when right now we're just going through some examples but we will see that further in our lesson jesus came along and he also endorsed water baptism by his example first off he approached john to be baptized he went and got baptized by john seeing that jesus submitted to water baptism how can we just dismiss it is not important i find it interesting jesus knew no sin we talked about that before but he said this is just going to fulfill all righteousness i'm just letting you see here's what you do with flesh you baptize it you bury it and so he endorsed water baptism by example but he also commanded water baptism as that essential element of salvation we read that in those passages at the beginning go ye therefore teach all nations baptize them jesus commanded and so he commanded his disciples go into the entire world wherever you go baptize your believers he did not exclude a nation he didn't exclude a people from this command if it weren't essential why would he say you know what you need to go everywhere and baptize people well i don't think it's all that important right now well jesus told his disciples to do it so he must have thought it was necessary in mark 16 16 he linked water baptism with salvation he said he that believes and is baptized shall be saved but if you don't believe you're going to be damned i've heard interesting commentary from people on that say see he said if you're believing you're baptized you'll be saved but if you don't believe then then you're lost doesn't say anything about not being baptized of course it doesn't if you don't believe you're probably not going to be baptized so they are linked together we must be baptized jesus placed believing and being baptized together in the salvation experience individuals you demonstrate their faith or the act of believing by obeying that command of being baptized believing involves doing something about your belief you can say all day you believe something but if you won't act on it then really wonder do we really believe it right if a person believes the gospel he will obey the scripture and he'll be baptized if he doesn't believe he probably won't be baptized one man wrote it this way he said faith demands baptism as its expression if you have faith then that faith will say then you need to be baptized you need to show that you have that faith on the other hand he said baptism demands faith for its validity you don't really believe but you say well i guess they told me i need to be baptized so i don't know about i'll go ahead and get baptized well there's no faith there then that baptism really isn't valid it isn't in other words it's not just an act of saying hey we can go and dunk in water and you'll come up and you've been baptized you got to believe there's got to be some faith there first it's identifying and here's what it is it is identifying oneself with jesus christ it is placing your faith in the atoning work of the cross and saying you know i understand this is the only place where my sins can be remitted and faith finds that expression by being baptized that is a faith that is unto salvation and so jesus told his disciples repentance and remission of sin should be preached in his name among all nations and they fulfilled that command in acts chapter 2. by his example jesus endorsed immersion as the mode of water baptism he commanded his disciples he taught that water baptism is essential and clearly the apostles interpreted the fulfillment of his instructions of water baptism
we see that in the book of acts the disciples had already been baptized the bible tells us by water and at pentecost they were filled with the holy ghost and when the people heard what was going on in the upper room they began to come and to see for themselves what happened they heard the believers speaking in tongues they didn't understand anything about that what what is this all about peter begins to preach to them begins to convict their hearts and they say what shall we do and peter says well repent turn turn to god change your minds and be baptized for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the holy ghost three thousand souls added to the church i think there's probably three thousand that obeyed and were baptized and we see this pattern in the new testament church everywhere the disciples went preached the gospel they also baptized their converts this wasn't just some option or something they did in addition to the 3000 on pentecost the lord added many others the bible says in acts 2 47 and they proceeded to baptize them acts chapter 8 philip goes to samaria and he baptized both men and women following philip's baptismal service peter and john went to samara and laid hands on them and they received the holy ghost and then philip is traveling from samaria and he's out in the desert and he meets an ethiopian and he begins to talk to him and obviously he talked to him about salvation and they saw water and the ethiopian says well what does hinder us here's water why not baptize me so we see the importance of baptism in acts chapter 10 the apostle peter preached to those that gathered in the house of cornelius the bible said the holy ghost fell on them that heard the word peter didn't say well good you've reached the end post you made the touchdown you've re you've got the goal you've got the holy ghost in your life now no he stopped and he said you're speaking in tongues god's obviously filled with the holy ghost he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the lord now if it's something that didn't mean anything or wasn't important he would have said well if you've already got there you're good enough good to go no he baptized them he commanded them clearly peter did not view baptism as an option regard to salvation acts chapter 9 the apostle paul found some disciples of john at ephesus after questioning them about their experience and their baptism he found out they were baptized according to john's baptism and he re-baptized them in the name of jesus when they heard this they were baptized in the name of the lord jesus so we see this all through the gospels we see it through the book of acts and you can read about it throughout the letters when he talks about it in different places peter talks about it paul talks about it this idea of baptism we see the necessity of it and the disciples and jesus practicing that john the baptist what about baptism the mode of baptism this is important because we we talk of some say well it really doesn't matter it's just a matter of doing something and whether you do it this way or that way and it really doesn't matter again let's go back to see what the scripture has to say first off there are there are two camps there are those that believe in immersion and there are some that will take a pitcher water and pour it overhead and then there are some that will just take some water and there will sprinkle and you say well what's the difference does it really matter i think scripture can settle that for us first off it does by example we already talked about that but we'll also look at what else that entails further christianity is also seems to be divided over whether it should be in jesus name or whether it should be in the name of the father son and the holy ghost there's some say well it doesn't matter i've heard people do both i've heard people say i baptize you in the name of the father son the holy ghost in jesus name i've heard him and
and so there's some argument we want to look at what the scripture has to say about that one of the strongest arguments i think for baptism by immersion revolves around the word itself baptism it's kind of a unique word it's not really an english word it is a transliterated word in other words it's a greek word that because they didn't know how to translate it or didn't want to translate it any other way they just used baptism the greek word baptizo is where it comes from and so they rather than translate the word you know when you read some of the other words in the bible you know he bade them farewell they didn't take the greek word for farewell and just use the greek word and kind of make it sound english but when they got to baptism they ran into a problem you got to realize our bible was translated into english in the 1500s and as they were going through and they see baptism and they go to translate that word well what's baptism mean so we can put an english word to it well let's see and they get studying it means to dip it means to plunge it means to immerse hmm is that what the churches are doing around us no well if we put immerse if we say repent ye therefore and be be converted or if we say and peter said to them repent and be immersed in the name they're not going to like that so rather than do that why don't we just say baptize baptism be baptized we'll just take that greek word and we'll just kind of leave it alone and we'll just leave it to everybody's interpretation that's what happened when it got translated into english it's interesting that word came from in the common usage of it among the greek speaking people was to dip like to dip when they dyed a garment i'm just curious i don't know why just curious this morning anybody ever tie-dye anything you don't want to admit it you have take a shirt tie it all up rubber bands rope strings whatever and dip it and die that's where this word comes from to dip it in pla you couldn't just take a little sleeve and dip one little corner in there it doesn't do the effect right you got to put it under the other thing is to take like a cup and stick it in water you want to get a drink you don't just kind of barely you know put it under so when you pull it up it's full that's where this word comes from so so the very word itself implies immersion and so how do you take a word that means immersion and say since we can't really you know this is going to cause problems we'll just say baptize and then you can do it any way you want that wouldn't work for a lot of things would it what if they had a word for baking something and they transliterated it because some people didn't want to bake they wanted to do it different where you're going to bake this cake so you know just and use this weird word then you can do it however you want okay well i'll put it in the microwave see how that works you know what i'll bet your cake doesn't taste quite the same they didn't want to spark a controversy here's an interesting quote this is from the catholic encyclopedia the most ancient form usually employed direct quote was unquestionably immersion this is not only evident from the writings of the early church fathers and the early rituals of both the latin and the oriental churches but it can also be gathered from the epistles of saint paul who speaks of baptism in the bath in the latin church immersion seems to have prevailed even into the 12th century and after that time some places even in the 16th century but instead infusion or aspersion or sprinkling or pouring however were growing common in the 13th century and gradually prevailed in the western church direct quote so they acknowledged well really it all started as immersion and we just kind of changed that along the way i think if we follow what the word of god has to say we won't do wrong will we now is it really that important well if we follow the types and the bible is full of types right there are many things where
there are types in the bible we realize that baptism is a type of burial the gospel message is the death the burial and the resurrection of jesus christ and we die to sins in repentance and we are buried with him the bible says in baptism well you don't bury somebody by taking a little thing of dirt and sprinkling on their head say good enough so there is a type there i think it's important the bible is very concerned about its types and we can see that throughout the old testament don't have time to go through it but you don't mess up the type that god gives because this is what it means so we are buried with him burial is a process of completely covering that deceased body likewise a person who has died out to sin through repentance must be buried by baptism then paul went on to describe it as through them that we rise to that newness of life so i think we can we can establish from an example from what the word itself means and from the type that baptism should be immersion the second thing we need to establish is it should be in jesus name amen i know we believe that it's noteworthy the scriptures don't record a single occasion of anyone being baptized in the name of the father son and the holy ghost i've heard people say well i'd re rather believe jesus than the what the apostles did well you start down that road you might as well tear your bible up because you're going to find everything you don't like and just pull out what you want the international standard bible encyclopedia says this no record of a trinitarian formula can be discovered in the acts of the or the epistles of the apostles it is curious they say that the words father son and holy ghost are not given in any description of christian baptism until the time of justin martyr which was a couple hundred years later in every account of the performance of the rite and apostolic times a much shorter formula was used the three thousand believers were baptized on the day of pentecost in the name of jesus and the same formula was used at the baptism of cornelius and those that were with him indeed it would appear to have been the usual one from paul's question to the corinth under what name were you baptized were you baptizing paul's name no you were baptized in jesus name the samaritans in acts 8 were baptized into the name of the lord jesus and of course that's the same used in
acts chapter 19 in ephesus i've seen several pastors have known them that like to put ads in newspapers 500 500 reward thousand dollar reward if you can show me in the bible where someone was baptized in the name father's i mean you could put a million dollars you put 10 million doesn't matter you're not going to find it now i understand we can trace the original origin of that formula through church history but i don't think it's necessary to you just look at the book of acts we're a bible believing church see what they did and practice it they baptized in jesus name jesus taught his disciples that repentance and remission of sin should be preached in his name among all nations that remission of sin there is referring to baptism it should be preached in jesus name and that is evident that is how they interpreted jesus words whether they were from matthew mark luke whatever he said in john it was obvious they believed in the name of jesus for the remission of sin now i want to really focus in on this and this is this is one reason i sent you the lesson through an email because i wanted he wants you to have it word for word so nobody goes away saying well brothers paul this is what you're getting at i want you to understand this earlier we talked about john's baptism being a baptism of repentance right okay it's a baptism of repentance let's turn to acts 19 i'm going to look at verses one one through five and it came to pass that while apollos was at corinth paul he went through the upper coast he came to ephesus and he found disciples and he said to them have ye received the holy ghost since you believed they said holy ghost we've not heard that there be any holy ghost so immediately paul asked the next question and he said unto them unto what then were you baptized obviously he thought that was important right there again to the importance of baptism and he asked him so how were you baptized and they said this we were baptized unto john's baptism and it is in this setting that we see the real importance of baptism in jesus name you see paul was not content to leave these disciples in their current state he wasn't content to say well you've been baptized okay it was in the baptism of john good enough we'll just call that good here's the other thing he did not downplay their baptism he didn't say to them well you're wrong that didn't do you any good he didn't say well that's not right but he did put it into the proper perspective regarding salvation and he explained to them the purpose of what they had undergone he said well john verily baptized with the baptism of repentance saying unto the people that they that should believe on him that should come after him that is on christ jesus so here's what paul pointed out you were baptized and what you did that for was a repentance now think about this these disciples had repented that is they had changed their minds as we talked about last week they quit doing the things they knew were wrong quit following after sin and they turned toward god they had repented they had made a decision to live for god and paul commends them for that that's great i'm glad and it is precisely i believe at this point we find many people who have been baptized in the name of the father son and the holy ghost i don't think they did it because well i'm not going to do it your way at some point in their life they had repented they said you know i want to live for god and they were told well one thing you need to do is get baptized and we'll baptize you in the name of the father they had made a decision and they had turned their lives so rather than condemn and say well that was wrong your baptism didn't count why not say it's great that you're wanting to know the things of god and then show them in the word of god with the word of god that's what paul did he said you were baptized under repentance that's great but let me show you even further what the scripture has to say and as he did not condemn the disciples of john we should not condemn those that have made that his step but every dis i believe every decision you make toward god is a good decision even if it's not made with fullness of truth if you're wanting to live for god that's a good decision here's the more important issue are you willing to follow that decision into the fullness of truth are you willing to study the scripture and see what it has to say and so they listen to paul and the bible says when they heard this they were baptized in the name of the lord jesus now some will say well it's kind of odd to baptize them again here's what we must understand salvation rests where in jesus christ alone we studied that a couple weeks ago it is only through the cross of jesus christ we've already stated that baptism is an expression of faith faith in what our faith is in the work of jesus christ on the cross that's what remits sin and that is why paul required them to be re-baptized baptism however it is administered if it's not by immersion in jesus name i see it as a baptism unto repentance you're making steps maybe not the right steps but you're trying to follow after god and while it may be a good thing it's not the complete biblical work of salvation it is only by being baptized by immersion in jesus name that we express our faith solely in him that's why he insisted they be baptized again and that's why we implore anyone if you desire true bible salvation get baptized in jesus name paul would peter sums it up this way he said neither is there salvation in any other there is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved
we understand that god is a spirit right that has revealed himself in through completely through jesus christ that spirit never died on the cross for your sins jesus did the man christ jesus that's why we're baptized in his name because it is through that that remits him what does baptism do we'll study a couple things here as we wrap this up first off jesus said it was for the remission or for the payment of sin the bible record declares that the remission of sin can only occur when the name of jesus is invoked at baptism to admit that name is unscriptural and it really will rob the candidate of the intended benefit and that is the remission of sins jesus tied that remission of sins to his name and that repentance and remission of sins would be preached in my name and there's no other name under heaven whereby we must be saved so we are baptized in jesus name so our sins may be remitted and that we may be saved i think we need to understand that repentance as we said is changing our mind turning from sin turning towards god and god will forgive us but those sins still have to be paid for let me give you a quick example in in one of the parables that jesus taught remember the man that owed a huge son of money and he goes before the man that he owes it for and he falls down he said just if you will just forgive me and the guy said you know what don't worry about it go away your debt's forgiven and he walks away then the man goes and finds somebody else that owed him a couple pennies and grabs him by the throat said you're going to pay me what you owe me and the king hears about it and he brings the man back in and he says okay i forgave you a bunch now you're going to jail wait i thought you forgave me yes but you know what that debt was never taken care of he forgave him of it but technically the debt was still there it wasn't remitted it wasn't paid for repentance is for the forgiveness of sin but you need to get them paid for which is why we go down in jesus name so what does going down having that blood applied to our life in jesus name when we go in baptism in jesus name we already mentioned when paul asked the question unto what were you baptized he also asked him this he attempted to refocus he said was i crucified for you no the only one that was was jesus christ that's why that is where our faith is the second thing is and we already talked about this but we are buried with him in baptism our former life of sin ceases through repentance so we've killed the old man if you will and at that point burial is appropriate once we have killed the old man water baptism is like a burial our faith response to the gospel of jesus christ as we said correlates with his death his burial and his resurrection and the sinner who truly believes the gospel of jesus christ will die to sin at repentance and then and i might add and only then does he get buried in baptism in jesus name it does no good to not die out and go get baptized because in the words we hear sometimes you can go down a wet center dry center and come up a wet one but once you've died out and you've turned and forsaken those sins then get baptized and get those sins paid for and then finally that applies the name of jesus to our lives we're bought with the price and we have his name on our lives why again in the name of jesus why are we baptizing that jesus name father son holy ghost those aren't names i might be a father and i'm a son but those are my names i'm not the holy ghost but it's in my life that's not my name right it's only through jesus name jesus said i come how in my father's name the holy ghost said jesus i'm going to send the holy ghost how in my name there's only one name the only nym under heaven whereby we must be saved that's the name of jesus i think that enough there to say you know what if i'm going to be baptized let's just do it in jesus name that takes care of all of it right that's the way they did it in the bible and that's what the word of god has to say
and finally baptism peter said it saves us jesus said you had to be born of water and of spirit peter looked at it and he as an example in peter 3 he said in noah's day there were some that were disobedient god waited while noah built an ark he prepared it and eight people were saved by water and then he said this the like figure he said bible's always concerned about types where until even baptism doth not now doth also now save us not again the putting away of the filth of the flesh it's not like taking a bath but it's the answer of a good conscience toward god by the resurrection of jesus christ being born again of water in the spirit is truly a new beginning in a life regarding what baptism in the bible has i think you have to examine the evidence carefully i think we've done that you could probably go into even more detail you want to look into it but i think this pretty well sums up what it's all about and how we need to do it we'll clarify the issues i don't i don't think it's hard to understand to you it's pretty plain when you look at scripture and really this is what matters some respects modern christianity has drifted away from that paul warned us against that he said if somebody comes and preaches any other gospel than what we've given you he said let him be a curse and he didn't stop there he said it can be me it can be an angel from heaven if it doesn't line up with the gospel message he said let him be accursed he was saying let me be accursed if i come and try to change it on you we're not changing the church apostolic pentecostal church believes what the word of god has to say amen and we implore you if you have not yet repented your sins be baptized in jesus name and get him paid for and let him fill you with the holy ghost
let's stand i said i sent you the lesson to those that i have your email if you want a copy of it mybibleclass at hotmail.com send me an email i'll send you the lesson study it for yourself if you're not sure you want to want to go back over the points again amen but i'm thankful this is what the word of god has to say why don't you just lift a hand and thank him for it thank you lord for the clarity of your word to know god
