Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
Reading Genesis 3 and the need for redemption
- The lesson opens with a reading of the judgments on the serpent, the woman, and Adam, and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden to till the ground, with cherubims and a flaming sword keeping the way of the tree of life.
- Without the narrative of the Fall there would be no need for redemption, because man fell into sin and came to need a redeemer.
- How human nature is viewed, as inherently bad or naturally good, determines views of others, of self, and even of God; those who see people as basically good feel no need for salvation.
- The carnal nature will lead down a path of destruction if unchecked, and until a person identifies that, because of this nature, he is a sinner, he will not seek God.
Scriptures: Genesis 3; Genesis 3:14-24
Two ways to sin: deception and willing defiance
- Adam and Eve represent two ways people commit sin: Eve was deceived and beguiled, while Adam, who had received the commandment directly from God, was not deceived and made a willful choice to eat.
- Saul illustrates defiant disobedience: tired of waiting for Samuel, he offered the sacrifice himself, and was told that to obey is better than sacrifice and that rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft and stubbornness is iniquity and idolatry.
- Willful sinning after receiving the knowledge of the truth leaves a fearful looking for of judgment, for vengeance belongs to God and it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of a living God.
- Deception feeds on the gullible side of human nature and works through vain or empty words; the world renames what the Bible calls fornication, uncleanliness, and adultery so it does not sound so bad.
- Both defiance and deception require repentance in order to receive forgiveness and restoration.
Scriptures: 1 Timothy 2:14; 1 Samuel (book-only, as spoken); Hebrews 10:26; Ephesians 5:3-6
Covering, blaming, and the call to confess
- After eating, Adam and Eve knew they were naked, sewed fig leaves together, hid from God, and each blamed someone else when questioned, while God simply began to give judgment to each one.
- The carnal nature seeks to cover sin rather than take it to God, and even a child learns early to lie, hide the evidence, or make it look like someone else did it.
- Covering leads further than intended through excuses that it might as well be enjoyed, that God is already angry, or that forgiveness is easier to ask than permission, and through blaming upbringing, childhood, or others.
- The teacher wonders how different it would have been if Adam and Eve had confessed and forsaken their sin at once, and urges anyone who falls to cry out to God immediately, because confessing and forsaking brings mercy.
Scriptures: Proverbs 28:13
God cursed the serpent and the ground, not Adam or Eve
- Of the three in the drama, only the serpent is directly told he is cursed; God does not use the word curse to the woman or to Adam, but curses the things around them.
- For Eve, the sentence disrupts her appointed roles: sorrow is multiplied in bringing forth children, turning what should have been joyful into great pain, and desire and rule replace the intended relationship with her husband.
- Naming in scripture shows authority, as with Adam naming the animals and naming Eve, Jacob being renamed, and Jesus asking the possessed man his name; rule is described as harsh subjugation rather than the leader role God intended.
- For Adam, God cursed the ground for his sake: instead of simply dressing and keeping the garden and eating from its trees, he would eat in sorrow, with thorns and thistles, in the sweat of his face, until he returned to the dust he was taken from.
- In both cases the punishment made the very thing each was commissioned to do much more difficult, and the blessings of God were corrupted into hardship, hard work, and promised death.
Scriptures: Genesis 3:14
Broken fellowship and lost innocence
- Sin caused a break in fellowship with God: Adam and his wife hid from the presence of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and God called, Adam, where are you, pointing out that they were now separated from his presence.
- Man also lost his innocence: they had been naked and not ashamed, but after eating their eyes were opened, they knew they were naked, and they made themselves aprons.
- The depraved human nature is drawn like a magnet to what is forbidden, as with a sign that says thou shalt not, and Adam and Eve were drawn to the only tree God had barred them from.
- People will eventually succumb to the thoughts that captivate their minds; if the heroes of faith had been mindful of the country they came out of, they might have had opportunity to return, as Israel in the wilderness remembered the food of Egypt and forgot its hardship.
- The remedy given is to abhor what is evil and cleave to what is good, rather than rationalizing until partaking of the sin becomes the next step.
Scriptures: Genesis 3:8-9; Genesis 2:25; Genesis 3:7; Hebrews 11; Hebrews 11:15; Romans 12:9
Driven from the garden and the depravity of the carnal nature
- Adam and Eve were driven out of the garden and lost the provision they had known; Adam had to make his own way and provide food by working for it.
- The serpent had promised they could decide what is good and evil for themselves, but by eating they corrupted the image of God in which they were created, and an innocent man became carnal in his very nature.
- God did not create mankind sinful, but he created them with the ability to choose, and through Adam mankind chose a lower value system; in the fallen state even righteousnesses are described as filthy rags.
- Within a few chapters God saw that the wickedness of man was great and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was on evil continually.
- Those who do not like to retain God in their knowledge are given over to what is not convenient, and even celebrate doing what they know is worthy of death; sin is sin, and to be guilty of one commandment is to be guilty of all, so comparing among themselves is not wise.
Scriptures: Genesis 6; Romans 1
The ongoing struggle and deliverance through Jesus Christ
- The carnal nature remains at work even in believers, and the struggle with temptation will continue until Jesus comes again; receiving the Holy Ghost does not make a person immune to it.
- Believers are to develop spiritual disciplines, nurture the Holy Ghost in them, pray, read the word of God, fast, be in his house, and ask God for grace rather than becoming discouraged by the struggle.
- Every man is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires, and sin is conceived when he follows after that desire, so the struggle is to quell the desires of the carnal nature before acting on them.
- Paul describes a war in his members: the law is spiritual but he is carnal, what he would do he does not and what he hates he does, delighting in the law of God in the inward man while another law brings him into captivity to the law of sin.
- His cry, O wretched man that I am, who shall deliver me from this body of death, is answered with thanks to God through Jesus Christ, and with the promise that there is no condemnation to those in Christ Jesus who walk not after the carnal nature but after the spirit.
- Jesus, the perfect man, shed his blood and cleansed from the curse so people can live free from the hold of sin and have the fellowship lost in the garden restored.

Bible class time we're going to turn to Genesis chapter 3 and I'm going to read verses 14 through 24 in the King James version Genesis 3 14-24 begins this way and the Lord God said unto the serpent because you have done this Thou Art cursed above all the cattle of every beast of the field upon thy belly shalt thou go and thus shalt thou eat all the days of thy life and I'm going to put enmity between thee and the woman between thy seed and her seed and it shall bruise thy head and also bruises heel under the woman he said I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception and sorrow Thou shalt bring forth children and thy desire shall be to thy husband and he shall rule over thee and unto Adam he said because thou has hearkened unto the voice of thy wife and has eaten of the tree of which I commanded thee saying don't eat of it cursed is the ground for thy sake in the sorrow shalt thou eat of it
all the days of the thy life thorns and thistles shall not bring forth to thee and thou shalt eat the herb of the field in the sweat of thy face shalt not eat bread till they return unto the ground for out of it that was taken for Dost thou art and for dust Thou shalt return and Adam called his wife's name Eve and she was the because she was the mother of all the living and I'm also unto his wife that the Lord God make coats of skins and clothed them the Lord God said behold the man has become as one of us to no good and evil and now lest he poureth his hand and take also the tree of life and eat and live forever therefore the Lord God sent him out sent him forth from the Garden of Eden to till the ground from whence he was taken so he drove a man out of the garden and he placed at the east of the Garden of Eden cherubims in a flaming sword which turned every way to keep the way of the tree of life
there are a few stories in Scripture that continually affect us so much as the fall does as Mankind's falling into sin and without this Narrative of the Fall there would really if we think about it there would be no need for Redemption because man fell in sin he had a need for Redemption and how we view him in human nature either is inherently bad or naturally good will determine everything we do or will say in our views of others and of ourselves and even of God indeed those those who find man to be inherently good and think well mankind they're basically good people are basically good will never look to God as a redeemer because they never feel a need for salvation or a need for Redeemer so as we look through the stories of this Humanity's Fallen condition what we need to
understand is this carnal nature that we have that will lead us if we're not careful down a path of Destruction it's a well-known fact that the first step to any recovery program most of those is to understand first off that there is a failure or there is an addiction and you can look at any recovery programs such as alcoholics anonymous or other the first thing they say is hello my name is and I am an alcoholic but is identifying that need and so until we identify that because of this carnal nature that we are sinners we don't see any need for Redemption right if you think I'm pretty good person I don't need God well you won't seek God so as we look at this story as we studied last week Adam and Eve represent two ways that people commit sin and we won't go through all of
it I just want to kind of recap that we either do it by choice or sometimes by mistake First Timothy 2 14 tells us this Adam was not deceived but the woman being deceived was in the transgression so Eve was duped she was deceived she was beguiled as King James says but Adam was defiant and fully aware of his sin he had received the Commandment directly from God Adam had told him he said do not eat of the tree and yet he allowed herself in fact his excuse when it came well the woman whom you gave to me she gave me the tree and I did eat notice he doesn't pretend to be deceived he makes nothing about while I was deceived he didn't realize what I was doing he just said I I did it I chose to do it he made a willful choice to eat of the fruit there's no discussion there's no
deception as there was with Eve and defiant rebellious sinfulness is always in some ways more blatant and and I think in some ways probably more dangerous than deception because you think about it the familiar story of Saul and Samuel illustrates the point Samuel had told Saul you wait until I get there we'll offer sacrifices and you can go to war Saul got tired of waiting so he chose willingly to disobey Samuel's words he said I'm not going to wait for him there's a battle to be fought I'm going to do it myself and Samuel looked at him and he said has the Lord is great delight and burnt offerings and sacrifices as an obeying the words of the Lord in other words Salah I know the sacrifices were important but what's more important is that you obey and so to obey is better than
sacrifice and to hearken than the fat of the Rams and then he gives us this very familiar verse that we've probably heard at some point for Rebellion is as the sin of Witchcraft and stubbornness is Iniquity in idolatry because you rejected the word of the Lord you've been rejected thee from being Kings so that rebellious Spirit was what Adam had to just blatantly say I don't care what God told me I'm going to go ahead and do it anyway in a rebellious Spirit chooses to do what it wants without regard for God's commandment willful sin is a direct affront to what God tells us in fact the writer of Hebrews helps us under the stand the gravity of willful sinning he says in Hebrews 10 26 if we sin willfully not being deceived not something comes up but willfully I'm going to do this
because this is what I want to do after we've received that knowledge of Truth he said there is no more sacrifice for sin but there is a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fire indignation he said for we know him that hath said and talking about God that Vengeance belongs to Vengeance belongs to me I will recompense saying the Lord and again the Lord shall judge his people and it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of a living God so that willful sin the Bible says God is going to judge it deception on the other hand feeds on the gullible side of our human nature and really in some ways it requires the most discipline and discernment to to realize that we are falling into that deception the Lord God said unto the woman what is this you done she said the the
serpent beguiled me he deceived me I didn't understand in other words what I was doing and deception is often subtle and and Paul warned us not to be deceived into sinning we read this last week Ephesians 5 3-6 he mentioned several things fornication and cleanliness covetousness all these different things he goes through he said for this ye know that these people that do these things should not have no inheritance in the Kingdom of Christ and of God and then he said let no man deceive you with vain words and so don't be deception and again he said because of these things the wrath of God comes upon those that are deceived so just as Satan used vain words to deceive Eve he will use those vain or empty words to deceive us you ever notice that the world when it wants to change
a discussion the first thing they do is they change the terms or the words that they use in other words they take something that means one thing or they take a word that you're using and they change it into something else in an economic sense what one person calls what we're going to give you an economic stimulus another one says no that's just deficit spending you're just wasting money that you don't have what the world calls an affair or an alternative lifestyle or a choice that I'm making the Bible calls fornication and uncleanliness and adultery and so they change the words and it doesn't sound so bad right so Paul warns us don't be deceived one thing is clear about Defiance or deception both require repentance of sin in order to receive forgiveness and restoration so
this lesson begins where we ended last week Adam and Eve have accepted Satan's lies and now they have to live with the consequences Man created in the image of God now they find that that image is corrupted and their very nature is changed no longer are they innocent so they seek to hide themselves from the very God that created them and when questioned about their sin each begin to blame something else Adam says well it's that woman you gave me and Eve said no it wasn't me it was the serpent and God who knows all notice he doesn't comment on their finger pointing he didn't say wait a minute wait a minute Adam you know you can't blame her and he didn't look at Eve and say no no don't go pointing the finger at him and to the serpent he just begins to meet out judgment for each of the players in
this drama and so that passage that we read will set the stage this for the entire Bible and what we are looking for after our first parents partook of that forbidden fruit the Bible tells us the eyes of both of them were opened and they knew they were naked and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons the scriptures warn us to those that cover their sins they will not Prosper or enjoy God's favor mankind when he when realizes that God caught him or that he is in sin or that he is transgressing the word of the Lord the first thing sometimes our carnal nature will try to do is to cover it up try to hide it he that cover the sins Proverbs 28 13 says shall not prosper but here's the key who so confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy our carnal nature will always seek to cover
sin rather than take it to God that seems to be the first thing we want to do even a child at an early age learns to cover his wrongdoing doesn't he a lie or hide the evidence or make it look like someone else did it you see that path or that way of sin is it's a slippery path it'll lead us astray that's why Jesus said enter into a straight gate because there is a wide gate and it's a broad way and it leads to destruction so when we start down that broad path we soon find ourselves sliding quickly into sin and when we try to cover and we try to hide it human reasoning dominates and it will take us further than we intended and here's some of the reasons sometimes you hear well I've already done this this much I might as well have fun I've already made the mistake might as well enjoy it or well
God's already mad at me so what's a few more going to do or if I'm if I'm going to repent here's another one if I'm going to repent I might as well do something that's worth repenting of you know I'm making big time for this one we like to say well it's a whole lot easier to ask forgiveness than to ask permission when a person sins what happens we begin to feel that coldness of exposure even though no one's watching when we sin willfully when we sin and we know we are sinning particularly those of us that already are living for God when that happens like Adam and Eve we begin to look for flimsy excuses to hide our sin rather than come out and say you know Lord I'm sorry and we begin to if we're not careful we will reorder our world to justify that sin and we justify it we we appeal to a lot of
different things well the society accepts it or I was a victim and although we may long to restore fellowship if we're not careful we'll seek ways of coping with our sinful right lifestyle rather than turning to the one that can see can save us like in the scene of the garden Adam sinned after Adam sinned we seek to blame somebody else well it's really not my fault I don't deserve the punishment for that and Adam attempting to cover his Shame by passing the blame to someone else many people Echo that sediment in their lives well it's the home I grew up in that's you have to understand where I came from or it's because of something that happened in my childhood it's because of what my dad did it's because someone never told me if they had told me sooner I hadn't wouldn't have been in this mess we
always look for something I have to wonder how simple would it have been for Adam and Eve to confess and forsake their sins I wonder how much different the world would have been that as soon as their eyes were open and they realized we've made a mistake they didn't fall on their knees and say God I'm sorry we did not tend to do this instead of trying to cover and to try to hide and try to deceive even God himself if a child of God falls into sin here's the thing immediately cry out to God seek him because the Bible says if we confess our sins he's faithful and he is just to forgive us and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness aren't you thankful for that promise amen the verse we read earlier where it said that he that is that covereth his sins will not Prosper but he that confesses it it said
he will have mercy I'm thankful to know we do have a merciful god and yes we can read about judgment for those that willfully sin and we can read about there is a judgment for those who allow deception to rule their lives but in the midst of all of that we can also read if you confess it and if you take it to God and you change your ways and you repent of that there is Mercy that is available for us how simple would it have been for them to just forsake and to walk away from that sin Adam and these Disobedience had dire consequences for them but not only them for all of humanity so this lesson we want to look at God's response to their sin and and what happened to that I titled the lesson implications of the fall things that happen God began first by addressing the serpent and we're going to talk
about that in a another lesson a couple weeks from now we will look at God's response or God's what he said to the serpent in a future lesson but what of the significance for this lesson are the words of Genesis 3 14 the Lord God said unto the serpent because you have done this and here's what I want to point out he said you are cursed above all cattle and above every beast of the field and I think it's interesting if you really look closely at the wording of our scripture of of the three players in this drama other than God of the serpent and Eve and Adam it is only to the serpent directly that God says you're cursed you're cursed so after he talks to the serpent he turns to the woman he turns to Eve and he said unto the woman he said I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and your conception and
in sorrow you're going to bring forth children your desire should be to thy husband he shall rule over me notice he didn't turn to even said because you've done this you're cursed did not say that while he does promise to multiply her sorrows he does not use the word curse I'm thinking what God did not choose to curse those that sinned he cursed other things around them and we're going to look at this a little bit closer the sentences that were pronounced on both Adam and Eve really take the form of a disruption of God's appointed roles you see Eve was created to be Adam's Helper and he was created she was created to be the mother of children in fact if you look the only instructions given to both of them after creation was this be fruitful and multiply fruitful and fill the Earth but now suddenly
this one role that God specifically gives Eve is going to become an infinitely more difficult task what should have been a joyful undertaking was now going to be marked with pain as she went to death's door to Belt bear children have you ever had pets if you've ever been on a farm have you ever seen the birth of of animals there's no pain involved with that you don't see them crying out you know but when a man when a woman has a child they have to go to that point of great pain and suffering and sorrow because of it and the Bible says this is going to happen because you have sinned now it wasn't a curse but it was just a change in in what God had created the Bible also makes it clear that woman was taken from man to be a helper and that it is man who gives Eve her name now that's an interesting
concept here it doesn't spell it out directly but you see it over and over in scripture in scripture when someone calls someone a name what they are doing is asserting authority over that person or they are showing that they are the one in Authority that's why God brought all the animals before Adam and said name all these animals because as he began to name them what he was saying is God said you have dominion over it and you subdue it you you are ahead of all of these animals and then we also read that Adam looked at the woman that God created and he called her Eve and he was showing that yes he did have authority over her that was Jacob's intent when he was wrestling with the man and he turns to him and he said what's your name and God theophany whatever you want to call that was wrestling
with angel said Jacob said why do you ask me your name what's your name well it's Jacob and I'm changing it he was showing I've got authority over you Jacob when Jesus came into the land of the gadarians he found the man possessed with the devil what's the first thing he asked what's your name We Are Legion for here we are many he was showing I've got authority over you and so this principle you see all throughout scripture and so God did give Adam a role even though he was she was a helpmate to work alongside him that he was to be the leader in that situation but something changes here because now he says it this way he is going to rule over you not that he just was the leader of the pack but he was going to Rule now rule represents a harsh exploitive subjugation it means I'm going to be the
boss I'm going to tell you what to do and so what meant what was created what God intended as to love and to cherish if we're not careful becomes to desire and then to dominate so here's what I think we see in God's statement it was not so much that God was saying it should be this way but he was pointing out that because of sin it was going to be that way because you took of this and you you fell into this sinful roll here's what's going to happen he's going to rule over you he's going to get this attitude that he's the boss and he's if things aren't going to be quite the way they were or the way I intended so God's not cursing me but he's saying sin entered to life and so now here's going to be the consequences it's going to be much tougher to have children and it's going to be much different
relationship with your husband and then he turns to Adam and he said because you listen to the voice and you've eaten to the tree and I don't think he was saying because you listen to her you're wrong what he was saying is you listened to her and said of me he said because of that and you you listen to a different voice than the command that I gave you and I commanded you saying Thou shalt not eat of it because of that you're cursed no he didn't say that he didn't curse Adam he cursed the ground for Adam's sake he said I'm cursing it because of you and in sorrow you're going to eat of it all the days of your life it's going to bring forth thorns and thistles and you're going to eat it in the sweat of your face you're going to eat bread till you return to that dust again God does not curse Adam but
he curses the ground when Adam's Place in the guard when Adam was placed in the garden his responsibility was this I'm going to put you here everything you need is here and here's all you have to do dress it and keep it prune off the branches make sure everything's good not a whole lot of work and you can keep it and you can eat it nothing is said about tilling the ground nothing is said about eating from the the sweat of your brow nothing was said about happened to plant seeds and pull weeds none of that kind of things he ate from the Bountiful visions of every tree of the garden and so what I find interesting even as with Eve Adam's punishment was the very thing was was a corruption or making the very thing he was conditioned commissioned to do much more difficult it was before you could just
go and enjoy the fruit tend to the Garden keep it nice and everything is right there now you're going to have to work for it now you're gonna and so the ground is cursed it's not going to just provide for you you're going to have to dig it out by yourself and then the final statement answers to God's promise God said if you eat of the tree you shall die well we didn't die immediately no but he did tell Adam this you're going to do it until you return to the ground for out as what you were taken you're made of dust and you're going to return to dust so while physical death was not immediate it is Promised again here in this this verse of scriptures so as we look at the results of the Fall I think we can see at least four things that took place there could be more but we're going to discuss these
the first is what we just discussed humans are the only creatures in the world who took the blessings of God and corrupted it and caused it to change into a curse Eve could have happily populated the Earth with joy Carefree exuberance had good family all these things and said she swapped that for excruciating pain and fulfilling her Destiny of motherhood she could have been right alongside of Adam as his help as a help meet doing all these things instead she found herself in a role that was not quite what God intended in Adam's life originally blessed and easy as God provided his food and relaxation
and happiness now his Ambitions land him in poverty and living with aching muscles and sorrows and sweat of his brown working hard what a contrast from the life that God had provided for mankind so that's the first thing we see the condition that we are in the things of the way that we we have to live our lives the fact that we all face death the fact that we all have to work and and earn our livings and the fact that we we Face struggles and all these kind of things are because of the fall but more than these physical factors there are some spiritual things that we can observe as a man result
of man's sin sin caused a break and this is even more critical in the fellowship with God sin will always keep us out of the presence of God the old song said it this way sin can never enter there God's holiness cannot allow does not allow sin to come into His presence we know that early on the God would come into the Garden of Eden and man would commune with him and he would talk with God and and in Genesis 3 8-9 it said they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden the cool of the day and normally that would have been a time of great excitement and joy God is here let's let's
fellowship with him in the cool of the day and instead now Adam and his wife hide themselves from the presence and God calls on them Adam where are you God knew where they were but he was pointing out you are now hiding from me you are now separated from my presence and that really is the worst part of Adam's fall it drives a wedge between him and God the fellowship that God desired and it was essential for man's well-being is now broken and is now gone there's no longer that sweet communion with the Creator the creation becomes estranged from the Creator in addition to losing the fellowship with God
the next thing we see is man lost his innocence creation we're told in Genesis 2 25 it said they were both naked the man and his wife and and were not ashamed immediately upon partaking of the fruit in Genesis 3 7 it says the eyes of them both were opened they knew they were naked and they immediately sowed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons you see when we become aware becoming aware of evil sometimes is our biggest problem praved human nature causes us to be drawn you ever notice it causes us to be drawn like a magnet to something that we don't need to be doing it's Human Nature put up the sign that says what pain what are people going to do it's got to see let's try it is it
really wet it's Human Nature put up a sign that says Thou shalt not as the Ten Commandments do and what does man do why what's wrong with that why can't I do this we seem to be drawn to that and that's what he has pointed out no longer innocent that says wet pain I'm going to stay away from it Thou shalt not okay I won't but now because of that carnal nature we seem drawn to those things notice Adam and Eve were drawn to the only tree whose fruit God had barred them from eating eating the one thing you can't do that's what I want the one thing I shouldn't do that's what I want they didn't fence it off they didn't put it out of their minds and and here's the thing it's no secret that we will
eventually succumb to the thoughts that will Captivate our minds if we if we dwell on it long enough it's an interesting verse in Hebrews chapter 11 and verse 15 talking about The Heroes of Faith and it talks about the different things that they had done and and how they lived for God and were faithful to him and then he says this in 11 and 15 he said and truly if they had been mindful of that country from once they came out they might have had an opportunity to have returned in other words if that's what they were thinking of if they were always saying oh I kind of like the children of Israel remember they're walking through the Wilderness oh we remember Egypt what did they remember they
remembered the leeks and onions that they got to eat by the Nile they remember those kind of things we had melons we had fruit we had all this stuff and they forgot about building the stuff and making bricks and slaving in the whip to their back and all the things that were going on and how difficult it was all they could think about is what they missed and so if you're mindful for that country in fact some of them decided Well let's go back of course God had to open up the ground and squash Cora's Rebellion because of that but if you're constantly thinking of sin and thinking about those things that you should not do or should not be a part of believe me the opportunity will come for you to return
to that and people today justify themselves for doing the things that God has forbidden if we're not careful this carnal nature will rationalize until the next logical step is to partake of the sin ourselves and we end up violating God's command that's why Paul instructed us in Romans 12 9 he said abhor hate the things that are evil and cleave hold on to things that are good if not with innocence gone mankind has driven by inordinate desires by this carnal nature of course they also another effect of the Fall was they were driven from the Garden of Eden God drove them forth the Bible said he didn't just send them out he said he drove man out get out shoved him out you can no longer have my
blessings in this that I had provided in this Garden Sunday Adam and Eve lost God's Perfection and they lost the provision that they had known Adam had to make his own way in life provide food for his wife by working for it the cost the selfish choices cost them dearly so they lost those things the promise of the serpent was in the day that you eat thereof your eyes shall be open and ye shall be of God's knowing good and evil he was in effect promising Eve you can decide what is good you can decide what is evil you can make the choice between good and bad you can decide what is right and what is wrong and instead by partaking in the fruit she and Adam corrupted that very image in which they had
be been created that image of God an innocent man became carnal in his very nature that is the greatest consequence of the Fall the word of God teaches us that sin dwells in this carnal nature while God did not create us sinful and that is important to understand he did not create mankind that way to people say well this is the way God created me and they live in sin and say tough luck that's the way God made me I'm going to be this way he did create us with the ability to make that choice to sin through Adam mankind chose a lower value system that polluted nature of mankind has earned him things that he never dreamed of we can now feel sin we can feel sorrow we can catch sickness we can feel
the Pains of a Consciousness when we do things that are wrong we can create social conflict and Rebellion experience pain experience bondage of self-indulgence we can fight to justify our self-will we can follow it with thoughts of self-justification and anticipation of God's Wrath you see without God and here's what we have to understand because of the Fall the Bible tells us we are all as an unclean thing and all of our righteousnesses everything we do to do good he said are as filthy rags even our good is counter for bad when we live in that Fallen state we are given this carnal nature following in the sinful footsteps of Adam we we read if you continue to read through scripture it only
takes a couple more chapters in Genesis chapter six and we read God looks at the wickedness of man he said it's great in the earth and the every imagination and the thoughts of his heart was on evil continually Paul went to Great Lengths to describe this carnal mind we're talking about implications of the Fall the things that happen Romans chapter 1 speaks of those who choose to deny God and follow after fleshly desires he sums it up this way even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge God gave them over to do those things which are not convenient why because they said I can make my own choice I can choose what's right I can choose what's wrong that is the carnal nature then he gives a long list of sins and things that they do and he says who knowing the Judgment of God and that they that commit such things are worthy of death but they not only continue to
do them or they do the same but they have pleasure in them that do them they celebrate it that they're what they are doing is against the word of God that's what happened when man fell the depravity of sin the carnal nature takes over now I understand some people take take issue with that they say well I'm not depraved I don't go out and kill people I don't I'm not this or I'm not that and I understand we are not but the Bible lets us know this to be guilty of one commandment is to be guilty of all of it we look at everything as levels well that person they're depraved I mean they're they're just nuts they go out there you know they deserve death penalty they deserve to be locked up forever they you know okay well I told a lie but that's a little bit different Sin is Sin and our carnal nature will tend to try to cover up or to do all those things and so you cannot look at
it to say well I'm not like they are in fact the Bible says it this way they that compare themselves among themselves are not wise because we could come up with a hierarchy and here today if we wanted to we could all vote and say well this person they're the they're the holiest and they're the best person and this one they're not quite as good but they're pretty good and this one and that person over there well I don't know about him or her and we can rank it all but God looks and say you know what all it takes is one sin and you're at the bottom of the Heap and we don't like that right that's not our way of thinking but his ways are not our ways his thoughts are not our thoughts and here's the other thing we've talked about this carnal nature this this implication of the Fall tells us another place he says this those that think you're saying take heed lest you fall the
carnal nature is not only at work in the world but we also must always be on guard against this carnal nature often new Believers experience guilt and condemnation maybe old Believers because we encounter this raging struggle within ourselves they somehow think that because they failed or something is wrong with your experience with God when you begin to experience Temptations why is that tempting me why am I why am I wanting to do that why am I wanting to look at that here's why it's because we still have this carnal nature that's why Paul said I have to die out to it daily he said I have to keep under my flesh I have to keep it down this carnal nature is always wanting to pop up its ugly head and here's the news that I hate to say it but we're going to have to struggle and engage and deal with this struggle until Jesus comes again that's why Paul said the whole creation it
groans under the way to sin and it will until the day Jesus comes back thanks to Adam and Eve every human has this Fallen carnal nature that is susceptible and tainted to sin and that we must keep victory over it the Bible says all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God and when we receive the Holy Ghost in our life and he cleanses us from those sins it we do not become immune to this carnal nature it is still there here's what we need to do we need to develop some spiritual disciplines we need to nurture that Holy Ghost that is in us we need to pray and we need to read the word of God we need to take times of fasting we need to take time to be in his in his house and resist those carnal things here's the thing don't think it's strange when you encounter those struggles the Bible says but overcome that nature not in yourself but ask God to give you Grace ask him
to help us don't become discouraged about that struggle but become aware of how to combat it through the power of the Holy Ghost Paul said it this way in in Romans chapter 7 he said sin took its opportunity it deceived me the carnal nature will continue to try to work in you even if you are saved and that struggle is is always there but here's what we know when when those carnal desires rear their ugly head sometimes if we're not careful we say well I'm just a sinner well yeah we're Sinners but we're saved by grace and James says here's what happens every man is tempted when you're drawn away by those carnal desires but then he said sin conceives whenever you follow after that desire when you are drawn away by that so the key is not letting this carnal nature draw us away yeah you're going to have to struggle with some things but don't let it draw you away into doing those
things the struggle we face is in quelling is quelling this desires of this carnal nature before we act on them and they become sin Romans 7 14-23 I won't read it all it's we're running out of time here you've probably read it he said here's what I know the law is spiritual but I'm carnal sold under sin and then he goes into this long thing that which I do I allow not for what I would I do not and what I hate I do if I do that which I would not I consent the law is good and he goes on and on I don't want to do it but I do it I want to do it and I don't do it and back and forth what he was saying is and he finishes this but I see another law that's in my members in the inward man I Delight in the law of God I want to do what is right but there's something else there and it is always warring against the law of my mind it brings me into captivity to the law of sin which is
in my members so I've got this struggle that has always gone why is that it's because of the Fall it's this carnal nature it's an implication of what happened in Genesis chapter 3. it's the promise that it is just what God said when he said there's going to be enmity between The Serpent and the woman the seed of the woman it's going to be there there's always going to be this battle that is going to happen there evil is always Paul said when I would do good evil is always present with me but here's what I'm thankful for finishes it this way not this verse but the next one but we've got to read it first Romans 7 24 oh Wretched Man that I am struggle with this I want to do right I can't do right I've tried to do right I find myself doing wrong Wretched Man that I am who is going to deliver me from this body of death how am I going to get out of this and then he quickly says
I thank God through Jesus Christ Our Lord there is a way to overcome this carnal nature he follows it immediately with Romans 8 1 there is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus who aren't walking after that carnal nature but you're following after the spirit I'm thankful God provided a way of restoration through Jesus Christ and we'll get into that more in another lesson but Jesus God manifests in flesh for the purpose of forgiving our sins and restoring the fellowship and correcting the things that man lost in his relationship with God in the garden implications of the Fall Jesus Christ that perfect man the only one able to fix what Adam and Mankind broke shed his life's blood and cleansed us from the curse so
that we could leave live free from the sin hold in this life aren't you thankful for the promises of God's word I know and I said it last week there's no easy way you can't sugarcoat the fall you can't make it look pretty you can't say well you know this but there is a promise in it we'll talk about that as I said another lesson amen yes we have this carnal nature but we've got a God that will help us overcome why don't you just lift a hand and thank him for that thankful Lord for the promises of your word I know God we all struggle with these things but God we know that through you and through the power of your spirit we can live a life that is pleasing to you and one of these days will be changed into your image and be there eternal
