Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

Blessing the Lord at All Times: Psalm 34 and a Brother's Memory

  • Spaugh reads Psalm 34 as the lesson text — its opening verses, then verses 15-19 — and takes the lesson title from its first line: blessing the Lord at all times.
  • The psalm's own heading ties it to David changing his behavior before Abimelech: it was written out of a hard season, not a mountaintop.
  • The lesson continues the month's series 'God Is Our Refuge'; last week's lesson took up strength in suffering, looking at Job and at Psalm 22's 'My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me.'
  • Spaugh tells of his younger brother Mike, born about ten months after him and nearly a twin, who died at eleven in a bicycle-car accident that Spaugh saw happen; Mike would have turned fifty-nine the day before.
  • No one in this life is exempt from adversity, yet even in that darkness there was hope in Christ, and comfort in knowing they will meet again in eternity.
  • What every adversity teaches is that God is still worthy to be praised — a good and great God in the middle of the trouble, not only after it.

Scriptures: Psalms 34; Psalms 22

David Learns Praise in the Fields — and the Highs That Followed

  • David learned to praise God young, during countless hours alone protecting his father's sheep, considering the heavens and the works of God's hands; those early altars became a constant source of strength for his whole life.
  • A messenger called him in from the sheep and Samuel the prophet anointed him to be king — oil poured on his head with no time to prepare or even clean up from the fields.
  • He kept serving faithfully, as his father's shepherd and then as Saul's court musician, summoned to play before the king.
  • Sent to carry food to his brothers at the battle, David heard Goliath's boasting, took his sling and five stones, ran to battle, and killed the giant.
  • On the way back the people sang Saul's thousands against David's ten thousands; David learned what it was to be praised himself, and Saul's jealousy made him an enemy far more dangerous than Goliath.

Scriptures: 1 Samuel 17

Flight to Gath: The Story Behind the Psalm

  • David never rehearses his own circumstances in Psalm 34 — no account of Gath or of why he was there; his only desire was to say God is worthy to be praised in every situation, so Spaugh reads the psalm together with its story in 1 Samuel 21-22.
  • Saul threw a spear at David as he played; Jonathan shot the arrows that were their agreed signal, and David knew he had to get out or be killed.
  • David fled to Gath — the very city of Goliath, the champion who came out of its camp at six cubits and a span — because he feared Saul; going to the town whose hero he had killed shows the desperation of a man at a very low point.
  • The Hebrew 'at all times' covers every season of life, every event, and every particular occasion: whatever is going on, it is always a good time to bless the Lord.

Scriptures: 1 Samuel 21; 1 Samuel 21:10; 1 Samuel 17:4

Feigning Madness in Gath — and Crediting God, Not the Acting

  • Achish's servants recognized David immediately and brought him before the king as 'David the king of the land'; fear gripped David's heart — the man who had boldly faced Gath's champion was now seeking refuge in Gath.
  • David feigned madness before them, scrabbling at the gate and letting spittle fall on his beard, until Achish dismissed him: he had madmen enough and did not want this fellow in his house.
  • David did not walk away crediting his ingenuity; he gave all the glory to God — 'I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.' In any situation, seek God in it and give him glory coming out of it.
  • Psalm 34:7 gave him confidence even in custody: the angel of the Lord encamps round about them that fear him and delivers them; and verse 17 promises the righteous cry, the Lord hears, and he delivers them out of all their troubles.
  • We have an enemy too: the devil goes about as a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8); resist him steadfast in the faith (1 Peter 5:9), and resisted in the Lord's name he will flee.

The Cave of Adullam and the Company That Gathered

  • David escaped to the cave of Adullam (1 Samuel 22:1), rough country about ten miles southeast of Gath, and his brethren and all his father's house — themselves at risk from Saul — came down to him there.
  • These were the same brothers who had demeaned him before Goliath ('with whom hast thou left those few sheep?'); yet in trouble they sought him out — as people who mock believers still come to them for prayer when a situation hits their own lives.
  • Psalm 34:11 — 'Come ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the Lord' — may well have been David saying to those brothers in the cave: let me teach you how to live for God and trust him.
  • Everyone in distress, everyone in debt, and everyone discontented gathered to David — about four hundred men — and he became captain over them (1 Samuel 22:2); not the company anyone would choose, but God can change them.
  • David was not building an army to attack Saul; he refused to touch God's anointed. God's route often differs from the map we expect, yet Psalm 34:22 stands: the Lord redeems the soul of his servants, and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate.

Scriptures: 1 Samuel 22; 1 Samuel 22:1; Psalms 34:11; 1 Samuel 22:2; Psalms 34:22

A Word in Moab: Get Out of the Cave and Into Judah

  • David carried his father and mother to Mizpah of Moab and left them with the king of Moab while he stayed in the hold (1 Samuel 22:3-4) — running from Saul, sheltering outcasts, moving his parents out of the promised land; nothing looked like it was working out.
  • In Moab — of all places, a land that had once refused Israel passage — the prophet Gad arrived with a word from the Lord: depart, abide not in the hold, get into the land of Judah; and Judah means praise — get out of the cave and back where you belong.
  • One word from the Lord can dispel every doubt and kindle faith; it may come through a preacher or prophet, as a still small voice, or as a verse that jumps out of the Word — but if we will seek him, a word will come.
  • The answer cannot be scheduled: the lesson recalls a three-week season of seeking whose answer, when it finally came, explained that Satan had been hindering the message until Michael came. Keep trusting, keep believing, and God will give the word.

Scriptures: 1 Samuel 22:3-4

Taste and See: Blessing Him in the Affliction, Not for It

  • 'O taste and see that the Lord is good' — David had found God near to the brokenhearted and saving those of a contrite spirit, and he assures us we are never alone: the righteous cry, the Lord hears, the Lord delivers.
  • Verse 19 is honest about the first half — 'many are the afflictions of the righteous' — before it gives the promise: 'but the Lord delivereth him out of them all.' Blessings in living for God never meant an exemption from affliction.
  • David did not keep praise private: 'Magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together'; the writer of Hebrews says the same — consider one another to provoke unto love and good works, forsaking not the assembling of ourselves together.
  • We do not praise God for the affliction itself; David never named his circumstances in the psalm — no praise 'because I was hiding in a cave.' We praise him because he is faithful whatever we are going through, because he hears our cries and delivers.
  • Whether today is a mountaintop, a season of sorrow, or a time you cannot name, the lesson ends the same way: stand and praise him — it is always time to bless the Lord.

we're going to read from psalm chapter 34. psalm chapter 34. title of our lesson is blessing the lord at all times in psalm of david it begins this way actually in verse 1 or actually before the verse begins it is the psalm of david when he changed his behavior before abimelech who drove him away and he departed and then the psalm begins i will bless the lord at all times his praise shall continually be in my mouth my soul shall make her boast in the lord the humble shall hear thereof and will be glad o magnify the lord with me and let us exalt his name together i sought the lord and he heard me and delivered me from all my fears they looked unto him and were lightened and their faces were not ashamed this poor man cried and the lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles the angel of the lord encampeth about round about them that fear him and delivereth them o taste and see that the lord is good blessed is the man that trusteth in him jumping down to verse 15 said the eyes of the lord are upon the righteous his ears are open unto their cry the face of the lord is against them that do evil to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth the righteous cry the lord hears and he delivers them out of all their troubles the lord is nigh unto them that are a broken heart and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit many are the afflictions of the righteous but the lord delivereth him out of them we're studying this month a series titled god is our refuge and last week's lesson was about strength and suffering we started looking at the suffering of job at psalm 22 where david said oh my god my god why hast thou forsaken me and all of us go through difficult times and tough situations we talked about that last week and i've been thinking this week about my younger brother mike mike was about born about 10 months after i was so that's about as close to being as a twin as you can get without being one and yesterday he would have been 59 years old and i say would have been because at 11 years of age his life was cut short in a bicycle car accident and i won't rehearse all those details today but i bring it up to show you that no one in this life is exempt from adversity if you do want to read this story pentecostal publishing house put together a little book called a light in darkness it's stories of grief and loss and it's really a compilation of several different people but i wrote ask they asked me to write about it so you can pick this up from publishing house word of flame if you've not seen that if you want to read that story yes and it was difficult losing a brother at that age we were both 11 at that point but even more so since i saw the whole accident occur yet even in the midst of darkness there was always a hope in christ jesus and then and still now we can take comfort in knowing that i will meet again in eternity and what we learn through every adversity is that god is still worthy to be praised amen doesn't matter what we go through he's still a good god and he's still a great god david was a man who learned at an early age to praise the lord and during the countless hours no doubt that he spent alone out there protecting his father's sheep he had come to know the joy of god's presence he wrote many psalms many songs about that and talked about the thrill of god's presence and i'm sure david's experience in those lonely fields what really made him a worshipers he would consider the heavens the works of god's hands as he would be out there all alone looking at the skies and he would think about god and his heart as he said would indict a good matter then and those early altars would be a constant source of strength throughout his entire life now for sure his life consisted of some very extreme highs some very great things that happened to him but also sometimes when it was extremely or very appallingly even low and no doubt one of those highs came early at an age while he was out in that field and a messenger arise and says hey somebody wants to see you you need to get to the house so he left the sheep and he went into the house and there stands samuel the prophet saying this is the man that god hath chosen to be king and he pulls out oil and pours it on david's head i'm sure that was quite a shock not knowing you know no time to prepare no time samuel the prophet who was well known throughout all of israel no doubt standing there in his house and he's thinking you know if i'd known i'd got cleaned up i've been messing with these stinky sheep been out here in the fields hardly believe what was happening and then the words you are to be the next king god has chosen you and i i can't imagine what david thought as he left that place and went back to his sheep but his whole life was different and no doubt even in that situation there was just praise going to god god i don't understand this i don't see it here i am a shepherd and yet you've chosen me one of these days i'm going to be king and time passed and david gets another message and this time it is king saul commands you to come at once to his court and to play your heart for him you know can you imagine what what does this mean here i am i know eventually someday i'll be king but he's asking me to come into the court maybe i'm i'm just one step closer to the throne i don't know what's going to happen and no doubt he was praising the lord and he continued to faithfully serve his his dad as a shepherd and the king as a musician and then his father one day says you know i need you to go where the battle is your brothers are there and take them some food they're fighting against the philistines and david walks there and while he's there he hears the boasting of goliath and god stirred up david's spirit and with the blessing of saul he gets his sling and five stones and he runs to battle and he slays goliath great highs great things that he could look at and praise god about and the other you know everyone else just kind of in shock looking david triumphs over him and and when the giant falls he runs straight toward the giant which everybody else is hiding from and cuts off his head and david praises the lord for his power and and he known what it like to praise god but on the way back he learned something else he learned what it was like to be praised himself as the people begin to shout and sing and begin to say saul's killed thousands but this david he's killed ten thousand began to exalt him and he could never imagine all the things going on in his life but he also didn't realize at that time that when he killed goliath he made an enemy that was much more dangerous because saul began to become jealous of david and it completely changed david's life for the next several years and it was during this time yes he had always praised god in good times but now he was going to find he had to learn to praise him even in bad times the title of this psalm 34 said it is a psalm of david so he did write this in 34 it said when he changed his behavior before abimelech who drove him away and he departed now it's interesting really when you read through that psalm he never mentions the situation he doesn't talk about it he didn't say well i went there and this happened and so i had to learn to praise the lord and that happened and i had to do this and this happened he's really not interested in writing a song about his own actions he didn't care about writing a psalm about the events that ensued in gath or even why he was there in first place his only desire in writing this was to say you know what god is worthy to be praised in every situation isn't it interesting that he didn't dwell on the details and he didn't talk about here's what happened to me and you know i just had a hard time praising god but i had to figure it out his only desire was saying you know what god you're worthy and so since he didn't correlate the psalm with the story i'm going to look at them together today to see what we can glean from that and see where it comes and the story is told in first samuel chapter 21 22. after david killed goliath of course we know saul could not get over his jealousy of david and when he heard those women singing saul's slain thousands david his ten thousands it was just something that didn't set right in him you remember saul he was a guy that was bigger than everybody else in israel head and shoulders above everybody he was this big old guy and they looked to him and said you're the king because you're just great and strong you can lead us an army and here's david out there with a slingshot killing a giant while saul's sitting on his throne shaking in his boots and so this envy was planted in saul's heart that day and it didn't take very long before it sprung up shortly after that david was was there playing his harp and he was he was calming the evil spirit that had come upon saul and he was praising the lord and and saul all of a sudden reaches over and he picks up a spear and he throws it at david and david ducks out of the way and it sticks in the wall behind him and and he realized now it's time to get away i've got to get out and of course he met with saul's son jonathan and they talked about it and they said well let's see jonathan said let me see really what's going on between my dad and you and i'll let you know and of course we know the story how jonathan went out and shot some arrows into the field which were assigned to david to say you better get going you better get out of here and so he talked to jonathan john said yes you know dad's going to kill you you have to leave and so in response david does something that you would not expect if you remember from the bible first samuel 17 tells the story of goliath chapter 21 so just a few short chapters later david has to flee for his life and in making that decision he flees to gath now gath was one of the five main cities not in israel not in judah but in the land of the philistines the bible says and david arose in first samuel 21 10 and he fled that day for fear of saul and he went to achish the king of gath now perhaps that name sounds familiar the king of gath in chapter 17 and verse 4 it tells us there went out a champion out of the camp of the philistines named goliath of gath whose height was six cubits in a span so it's difficult to imagine the peril that david found himself in that he would be willing to go to the very town that goliath came from think about that he had killed their champion he had killed the one they all looked up to he had killed and yet he goes to that city because he's afraid of saul now surely he didn't expect to receive a warm welcome great david's here he saved us from our own soldier no if anything it shows us the desperation of a man at a very low point in his life think about that and yet we don't see that at all in this psalm as david writes about it after this happens you don't see him saying you know i was in such despair i ran to the camp of the enemy he doesn't say that instead he said i will bless the lord at all times and his praise shall continually be in my mouth now that hebrew word all times can refer to several different things it can talk about seasons where the word times it talks about a time or a time talking about a season or a season of life we can praise god in any season of life can't we doesn't matter where we're at there ought to be a praise in our heart for god it can talk about a specific event something that happened in the time of this king or in the time of this prophet so it can talk in the time of king saul when everything is looking bad for david he says i can praise god in the time it can refer to a particular occasion this is an occasion where he's running for his life and yet during that time he said i'm going to bless the lord and it of course can refer to a specific time on the clock or on the calendar what he was saying is it really doesn't matter and here's the important thing does not matter what is going on in my life it's always a good time to bless the lord it's always a good time to lift him up it's always a good time to praise him now we read at the beginning of this chapter it said this is when david osama david when he changed his behavior before abimelech as we read further we don't read the name abimelech we read the worm word akish but abimelech is a title which means son of a king scholars believe this is the same situation because this is where david did change his behavior if david thought he could sneak in to gath incognito he was mistaken i'll just disguise myself i'll do whatever no one will know i'm here he hardly arrived before the some of king aikis servants recognized him and i don't know if david did not realize the impression he'd made over the philistines in his triumph over goliath or the other battles that ensued after that but the philistines looked upon david as the captain of israel they even called him the king of the land they knew exactly who he was achis servants brought david's attention to the arrival of the king in fact they brought him before them and they said hey look is this not david the king of the land he wasn't the king yet he was anointed to be would be at some time but he points that out to them that that's their opinion that's what they thought isn't this david the king of the land did they not sing one of the other of him and dances saying saul has slain his thousands and david is ten thousand do you know king who this is do you see who we've got before you now i can't imagine what david was thinking but i do know what happened in his life he said this fear gripped his heart he said and david laid up these words in his heart and was sore afraid of achish the king of gath isn't that interesting he's afraid of the king of gath he had boldly approached goliath the champion of gath who had defied the god of israel yet now the table seemed to be turned and a philistine was not challenging israel here was an israelite seeking refuge in gath isn't it interesting how sometimes our life seems so positive one day and then suddenly we look at it and it's just completely reversed you know one day i'm slaying the giant the next day i'm running to where he is because i'm running for my life but in his psalm david doesn't even mention those particulars instead all he says is this i sought the lord and he heard me and here's what he said he delivered me from all my fears he sees achish and he's fearing and yet he never talks about that he just says god delivered me from my fear he thought akush no doubt would surely put him to death i mean here's a prime opera a great opportunity he had killed goliath this is the guy we all hate this is the guy that's going to be the next king why don't we just get rid of him right now and so david in fear thinking well i got to do something he decided to to appear as if he were insane and thinking maybe a akush would spare him and the bible says in 2113 first samuel he changed his behavior before them and he feigned himself mad or he acted like a madman in their hands and the king james says he scrabbled but the word there he means he scratched or he clawed at the gate and he's and he said he let spittle fall down on his beard and he's drooling and all this stuff and they looked at him thinking what's what's wrong with this guy akachi was was pretty sure that david something was wrong after all would any think about it would any sane israelite go to gath in the first place let alone somebody as famous as david and and then he sees how he's acting and i don't know what happened something snapped in this guy or whatever and he he said unto his servants look at him he's he's mad wherefore why have you brought him to me do i need mad men that you brought this fellow to play the madman in my presence do you want me to bring him into my house i don't want him around here and so david realized his life was spared but he didn't linger and he didn't stay there to see if akush would change his mind and kill him he he decided i better get out of gath and then psalm 34 here here's what's interesting david reveals he did not rely on his ingenuity he was not relying on his acting skills to face that situation he didn't walk away saying wow didn't i do great i fooled that guy and no he gave all the glory to god while in philistine's custody he had relied on god he called to god in prayer yes he did his part he did all that he could think to do the best he could do but really he knew god had set him free and so he gives the credit to god he said i sought the lord when he heard me and he delivered me not i fooled the king and i got out of there and i was pretty smart and crafty and figured no he gave the credit to god whatever situation you're in when you come out of it give god glory when you're in it give god glory when you're in it seek him and i'm not saying just sit there and not do anything but through it all look to god and david when he comes out he says this in verse seven he said the angel the lord he encamps around about them that fear him and he delivers them he said i knew when i was there before the king and even though i'm afraid i've also got the angel of the lord and camping about me and he is going to deliver me in verse 17 he said the righteous cry and the lord hears and he delivers them out of all of their trouble aren't you thankful we can ser we serve a god he knows our fears he hears our cries and he will deliver you from his trouble now i know we'll never be in the same kind of situation david was in however we do have an enemy don't we church the bible tells us that he actively tries to destroy us he never stops he never takes a day off first peter says it this way in five and eight the devil he goes about as a roaring lion walks about seeking whom he may devour he's out looking he is there but thank god this present reality that he said he may be seeking who he can devour but the lord encamps around about you if you fear him the lord will deliver you he is always surrounding us and if we will hold on to that promise the bible says peter told us in verse 9 he said we are able whom resist steadfast in the face faith yes resist the devil resist the enemy steadfast in our faith in jesus christ we can't rely on ourselves in the face of the enemy but our faith is firmly placed in god resist the devil james said and he will what he will flee resist him now that doesn't mean you can resist him but resist him in the name of the lord and when he flees we can sing with david the righteous cries the lord hears and the lord will deliver so david again flees this time not from to gather to the land of the philistines but he went to a cave in adelum the bible tells us in first samuel 22 and 1. it was about 10 miles southeast of gath that seems to be a no man's land between the territories the israelites held and the philistines held just kind of rough rugged country lots of caves nature lots of natural fortifications places where he could hide and so he was there hiding in in this place to find refuge from an enemy like saw in his army who were seeking to kill him david's family heard he was there and it's interesting the bible tells us david therefore departed thence and he escaped to the cave in adelaide and when his brethren in all his father's house heard it they went down feather to him i'm sure they also feared saul think about it this is david's family and and you would read about it many times through history when someone king would not like a certain family or what in fact sometimes we hear that in our modern day but if they don't like them they'll just kill not just that person but the whole family let's just wipe them out a lot of times when a king would change in in a society they would turn around and kill the whole family of someone else so that no one else could claim the throne and so saul couldn't get to david he could have easily gotten to their family to imprison them or kill them and so they came to where david was here's what i find interesting about notice that these were the same brothers who had demeaned david when he offered to fight goliath remember a liab the oldest brother he heard david speaking and his anger was kindled against david this is when david came before goliath and he said what did you come here for why camest thou down hither and with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness notice he's just down downing david talking you know those few little sheep you got out there out in the middle of nowhere why did you leave that i know your pride i know the naughtiness of your heart for your come down here that you might see the battle and and he begins to tell david you don't have any business what he's saying down here but yet when david's in trouble and saul is upset where does he go he finds where david is have you ever noticed when people face adversity it's the believers they seek out for prayer they can taunt they can say all kinds of bad things about christians sometimes they can mock they can talk about you they can joke because you won't go out to drink with them they can do everything else but when they get in trouble where do they go hey can you pray for me i got a situation i got a situation in my life could it be the instruction david offers in psalm 34 was directed to his brothers it's interesting when you look at this psalm the first 10 verses david is just talking about his praising the lord but starting in in verse 11 he begins basically some teaching telling people to depend on the lord and he says this in verse 11 come ye children and hearken unto me i'm wondering if he wasn't talking to his brothers the same ones that were putting him down he said i will teach you the fear of the lord what man is he that desires life and loveth many days that he may see good keep thy tongue from evil and thy lips from speaking guile depart from evil and do good seek peace and pursue it so he begins to give them some instruction you need to see god now he doesn't mention who he was talking to here but when you put this psalm right next to what was going on in his life i don't doubt that he was saying come on you come here in this cave let me teach you how to live for god and how to trust god others soon join david as well first samuel 2 and 22 says everyone that was in distress now listen to this group everyone that was in distress and everyone that was in debt and everyone that was discontented gathered themselves unto david and he became the captain over them and they were with him about 400 men you know if you're going to put together a group that's who you want right how much do you owe you're in debt i've got nothing i'm living in a cave and you know i have to go in and ask the priest to give me this leftover shoe bread so that i can we can even have something to eat and we're sitting here trying to figure out how to scratch out a living do something and you're in distress you're in debt you're discontented you like to grumble and complain you don't like what's going on that's who we want it's a way to build a church right let's go out and find everybody that's got a lot of debt everybody in distress everybody that's discontinued and griping and complaining you know what that's okay god can change him right so these 400 men they were under saul's rule they didn't like it and life in saul's kingdom had brought them to nothing but bitterness and discontent they were outcasts they were ready for a change they looked around they saw nothing in their lives worthwhile saul under saul forth preserving and so he decided you know what we're going to join david the outlaw david now had an outlaw band of 400 ready to serve him and follow him whatever he would reap now that hardly seems like the way to become a king does it maybe we could plot a revolution no that wasn't david's way in fact he made it clear later on in his life when he had opportunities to kill saul he said i'm not touching him he's god's anointed god's going to have to take care of him god's going to have to move him he wasn't building an army so he could attack saul he wasn't building he said you know what i know one of these days i'm going to be king and i'm probably going to need some loyal people around me and that's fine but until god takes care of the situation i'm not touching it we often don't we find ourselves in circumstances we don't understand how did i get here in a cave with a bunch of malcontents we may know where god has promised to take us we may look back and say i know god promised me that i know god said he was going to do this in my life i know he said he was going to lead me here i know he was going to do that why am i here i know none of you have ever asked that question but i probably have well maybe a couple of you have well maybe most of you have right let's be honest we know what god's promise we don't see how we're going to get there for when we look at our present situation and often god leads us out of the way we think we should go just to see if you're going to trust him could take you a different route god you said we're going here and i'm over here and now i'm going over here and i'm supposed to be going here i don't understand it i don't get it keep trusting god keep following god don't give up on god psalm 34 22 david said this the lord redeems the soul of his servants and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate now how do you write a psalm like that when you're living in a cave with a bunch of misfits trusting in you and i'm not going to be desolate well yeah i am right now i'm not going to be trusting god and god will be faithful aren't you thankful for the promises of god why don't you think you know it doesn't matter circumstances situations they're going to affect us all but we have to learn god is still worthy of my praise god is still in control of my life god is still going to work things out i don't understand it and i don't see what's going on but god is going to take care of it for samia 22 verses 3 and 4 david went thanks to mizpah of moabs and now he's gone even further south into the country down down further the land of the moabites and he said unto the king of moab let my father and my mother i pray come forth and be with you till i know what god will do for me and he brought them before the king of moab and they dwelt with him all the while that david was hiding there in that cave so now he not only is he running from saul not only his brothers joined him and all these other mis content malcontent people but now he has to take his parents and move them out of the promised land of israel and take them to moab and let them stay there nothing's working out in my life everything i see nothing makes sense and while he is there he gets a word from the lord you know you never know where god is going to send his word well that's going to be on a sunday when i'm at church and everything's going on no it might be in the land of moab it might be in the land of is of the enemy do you remember moab this was a town that was kind of down in the area where they were wandering in the desert and and when they were wanting to get to the promised land they asked the mobis hey cousin we want to go to the land of promise can we walk through the land we won't touch it we won't eat from your fields we just need straight passage you get there no you ain't coming here go around thanks friend thanks cousin go the other way and yet now in the land of moab what happens david gets a word from the lord god how are you going to speak to me in this situation how am i ever going to hear from you where i'm at and what i'm facing hang on if you're in moab he can still talk to you and the prophet again prophet gatt arrives with a word from the lord and here's what he says david get out of the hold get out of the cave don't be where you're at depart and get thee into the land of judah now a preacher could take that and probably go for the rest of the service judah means praise right get out of your cave and start praising god i think what he was saying is you know what you don't belong here you're the king that i have chosen to be over judah where you where you came from get back where you belong quit running and quit hiding in a cave and hiding in fear you know david was hiding in a cave first because he feared saul but he was also there because he feared achish the king of the philistines he's looking you know king over here i don't like me king over there doesn't like me where am i going to go i'll go to the cave before that word came david probably doubted whether any of those people in judah would support him but now he was certain that they would but more than that this word from god assured david that god supported him and that god was not going to abandon him what a blessing it is to receive a word from the lord when we're in situations we don't understand isn't it and they come in so many different ways sometimes it is in a service like last week when pastor brad preached about the rest for our souls and so many people that said you know i've been facing some things that i'm in a struggle and i just need to rest and the word of the lord said came and said there is a rest for you today and god begin to touch lives when we are fearful it's easy to feel overwhelmed and alone and not know what to do but one word from the lord can dispel all that doubt it can kindle faith in our life when we're afraid we've got to give ourselves to prayer we've got to ask god to you know sometimes just god silence all these other voices and all these other things i'm hearing and all the things that i'm going through and it may come from another person from a prophet from a preacher as it did today but it may come as it did for elijah is just a still small voice for god speaks something to our heart it may come as we look into his word and all of a sudden something just jumps out the lord and camps about those he's here with me and he's going to deliver me and something jumps out and touches our life and god begins to speak maybe as the spirit moves in our lives that comforter that he has placed there the comfort and the guide delivers us but here's what we know if we will seek him a word will come i can't tell you when i don't know how but it will come david sought the lord for several days first three weeks over something and when he finally got the answer the answer was well satan was hindering me but it took a while to get the message to you but michael came and now here it is i don't know when the message is going to come i don't know when that answer is going to come but you just keep trusting god you keep believing him and god is going to give you that word and the word was you know what david don't sit here get where you belong go back to what you know you ought to be and where you ought to be and what you ought to be doing david was a man of action he was a warrior he was a leader yet he was also clever and wise and when he faced enemies and trials he didn't take refuge in himself and well i'm pretty smart and i could figure this out but what he found was i'm turning to god i'm seeking god and when he did that he found that the lord was trustworthy that's why he could say this you know what telling everyone else oh taste and see that the lord is good blessed is the man that trusteth in him he's a good god taste and see try it out trust in him and you'll see that you are blessed because you trust in god that he is going to pour out his help david found that god is near to the broken heart and he learned the truth that can sustain us through all of our trials he learned that god is always a steadfast president help yes there are of times he cried out my god my god why is that forsaken me but he learned that really god is always that steadfast president and he assured us that we're never alone that he will always save us righteous cry the lord hears the lord delivers the lord is nigh unto them he said that are very broken heart and save as such that are of a contrite spirit what do you say he's not with the proud he's not with those who say i can work it all out myself and i don't need this and i don't need that and you guys have religion that's just a crutch and you know what god's not going to help them but when they say you know what god i need you when we come with that right attitude god will answer and then verse 19 which we don't like the first part of it many are the afflictions of the righteous wait a minute they're righteous everything ought to be going great well no many are the afflictions but here's the promise the lord delivereth him out of them all david reveals an important fact that many are the afflictions there are many blessings in living for god of course but god doesn't promise that just because there's going to be blessings that there will never be afflictions and our afflictions may be many but he is going to deliver us that's why he said i will bless the lord at all times as he declared that commitment he didn't leave it there he didn't just say you know what this is all about me i'm going to bless the lord at all times he said my soul shall make her boast and the lord the humble shall hear and be glad o magnify the lord with me and let us exalt his name together david called us to exalt god's name at all times and he encouraged us to do it together there is strength in unity there's something about coming together and praising god i know there are times when we are all alone we find ourselves alone in a situation we have to praise him alone but how much easier is it when we come together to worship him no wonder the writer of hebrews said let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works don't forsake the assembling of ourselves together but exhort one another so much more as you see the day approaching maybe today everything's on the mountaintop you know you've got the news you're going to be the king you just killed goliath you know you get to go in and play play for the king everything this looks good you hang out in the king's palace and you go home worship god on the hills and you go back playing the king's palace killing giants doing all those kind of things that's the case what's the answer i will bless the lord i will say we would look at that and say well that's when it's easy to bless the lord then why don't we why is it when everything's going good in our lives you know we just think we're doing it all and i'm i'm good and i'm doing it from and kind of people drift away no when the blessings are there praise him every joy-filled day lift your voice to god bless his name thank him for what what is going on in your life but on the other hand when you're experiencing affliction sorrow fills your heart and the joy is just remember what it used to be and and how do you respond david told us bless him praise him lift up god here's the key we don't have to praise the lord for the affliction or the sorrow some people get that wrong you know in everything give praise that doesn't mean you praise him for everything you're going through knew a lady one time her house was burning down and she went out in the yard and was just shouting praising thank you lord for burning down the house maybe she had reason to say that i don't know i don't think that's what he means i'm going through an affliction thank god for this pain thank god for this sickness thank god for this loss no he didn't praise for the specifics notice in this psalm david never mentions the specific specifics of what he was going through bless the lord because i was hiding in a cave bless the lord because i had to act like a fool so i could get away from this guy bless the lord no he didn't say any of that he just said you know what in whatever situation just give god praise just thank god thank god cause saul's after me no he didn't say that he said even if he's after that has nothing to do with my praise going to god in fact this this psalm that he writes for that equation he didn't even mention any of those circumstances he praised god because god was faithful whatever he was going through and he praised god for hearing his prayers and his cries and calming his fears and delivering him praising and blessing god and affliction can sometimes i understand could be terribly difficult but only when we learn to do that what we would can we taste and see that the lord is good when we've experienced it for ourselves that no matter what i'm going through if i stay faithful to god he will be faithful to me praise him seek him and as he said i will hear and i will deliver you anybody going through anything you don't have to raise your hand maybe you're on the top of the mountain wherever you're at you know here's the answer all times i think we need to stand and just give a praise for all times if it's a good time right now praise him if it's a bad time right now praise him if you don't know what kind of time is go ahead and praise him why don't you just thank the lord thank you lord for your blessings thank you for the promises that you're in camp and roundabout thankful god to know that you're in my life and you're in this place lord and you're go with me lord when i feel you when i don't feel you lord jesus that you are there that you're my very present help lord in time of need and i give you glory we give you praise in jesus name hallelujah hallelujah amen
