Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
Opening readings on the blood
- The lesson, the last of the year, opens by reading from Genesis 3, where Adam and Eve knew they were naked and made aprons, and where God made coats of skins and clothed them
- Leviticus teaches that the life of the flesh is in the blood, given upon the altar to make an atonement for souls
- In Galatians, when the fullness of time came God sent forth his Son, made of a woman and made under the law, to redeem those under the law
- Hebrews says almost all things are purged with blood by the law, and without the shedding of blood there is no remission
- First Peter says believers were not redeemed with corruptible things like silver and gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot, foreordained before the foundation of the world
Scriptures: Genesis 3; Leviticus 17; Galatians 4; Galatians 4:4; Hebrews 9; Hebrews 9:22; 1 Peter 1; 1 Peter 1:18-20
Nothing but the blood — works cannot atone
- The hymn that gives the lesson its title proclaims that nothing can atone for sin but the blood of Jesus
- Only the precious, sinless blood of Jesus can bring people back into a right standing and a right relationship before God
- Good works cannot earn that standing: Isaiah calls all human righteousnesses as filthy rags, fading as a leaf taken away by iniquities like the wind
- Paul agrees that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, so forgiveness cannot be earned or deserved, but is made available by grace
Scriptures: Isaiah 64:6; Romans 3:23
The real reason Jesus came
- Jesus came not only as a teacher or as a miracle worker who raised the dead, cleansed lepers, opened blind eyes and deaf ears, and cast out devils
- He said the Son of man came not to be ministered unto but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many
- He also said the Son of man came to seek and to save that which was lost — to provide salvation for the lost
- On the way to Jerusalem Jesus went before disciples who were amazed and afraid, and told the twelve he would be delivered, condemned, mocked, scourged, spit upon and killed, and rise again the third day
- Without that purpose there would have been no Christmas: he came first of all to die for mankind, that people might live
Scriptures: Matthew 20:28; Luke 19:10; Mark 10:32
Recap — Genesis seen through Christ
- The class recap says New Testament writers viewed the Old Testament through the lens of the Gospel of Jesus Christ
- Jesus himself said to search the scriptures, for they testify of him, so the writers looked for how he fits the earlier narrative
- The word God spoke in the beginning pointed to Christ: the word became flesh and dwelt among people, and the light pointed to the true light coming into the world
- Earlier lessons covered God's faithfulness and unchanging nature, the breath breathed into man, man made in God's image and being conformed again to the image of Christ, rest, the church typified in marriage, the devil's devices, the fall, the first and second Adam, the seed of the woman, and the promised Redeemer
Scriptures: John 5:39; John (book-only, as spoken)
Sin separates, and no sinner can substitute
- God is holy, separate, righteous and perfect, while sin is unholy and unrighteous; light has no fellowship with darkness and righteousness has no communion with wickedness
- Isaiah says iniquities have separated people from God and sins have hidden his face so that he will not hear — the sins themselves block the relationship God desired
- That separation dooms mankind to judgment whose chief torment is eternal separation from God
- People cannot change their fallen nature or heart by their own devices, and reformation alone never puts anyone in right standing with God
- Because all are under the same condemnation of death, no condemned person can substitute for another; only one without the curse of death and the sinful nature, the seed of the woman, could pay the penalty
Scriptures: Isaiah 59; Isaiah 59:2
Fig leaves, coats of skin, and atonement as covering
- After the fall Adam and Eve tried to cover their own nakedness and shame by sewing fig leaves together — their own works and method
- God provided the proper covering by making coats of skins, showing that an innocent life must be given to cover the sin of the guilty
- Seeing an animal killed for that covering would have struck Adam and Eve, who had known animals only in a world where nothing hurt or destroyed
- Atonement means a covering for sin: in the Old Testament the word is used over and over for covering, while in the New Testament the related idea is reconciliation — once sins are covered, sinful man can be reconciled to God
- Ransom and redemption belong to the same idea: the life of the innocent given to pay the price for the guilty, bought back at the price of the blood of Jesus
Scriptures: Genesis 3:7; Genesis 3:21
Tabernacle sacrifices and Christ's eternal redemption
- In the tabernacle given through Moses, animal sacrifices were central: priests shed blood at the altar and the high priest carried blood into the holiest place once a year as an offering for the people's sins
- Every article of the tabernacle depicted some aspect of the atonement, and the pattern had to be made exactly as shown because it pictured a greater, more perfect, heavenly tabernacle not made with human hands
- The yearly day of atonement only hid sins from view for another year; God honored those sacrifices in faith and obedience while pointing forward to something greater
- The blood runs as a thread through Scripture all the way to Revelation, where the redeemed are identified by the blood of the lamb
- Animal blood cleansed the flesh and made people ceremonially clean, but it never changed the heart — the illustration given is of something scrubbed clean on the outside that returns to the mud because its nature is unchanged
- By his own blood Jesus entered once, not every year, into the holy place and obtained eternal redemption; his blood purges the conscience from dead works to serve the living God, breaks servitude to sin, and frees people to serve him
Scriptures: Hebrews (book-only, as spoken); Revelation (book-only, as spoken)
Through the eternal Spirit, without spot — pleading the blood and bold access
- Christ's offering worked for two reasons: it was through the eternal Spirit, and he was without spot, without sin in his life
- The Spirit overshadowed his conception, descended at his baptism, drove him into the wilderness and through his ministry and miracles, drove him to Jerusalem to give his life, raised him from the dead, and was then promised to be in his people
- John writes that God gave the Spirit not by measure to the one he sent, so that God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself
- Jesus did not inherit Adam's carnal nature, being conceived of the Holy Ghost as the seed of the woman; the one who knew no sin became sin for others, with their iniquity laid on him
- To plead the blood is to answer the accuser who rehearses a person's past and mistakes by saying it is covered; in Christ there is no condemnation for those who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit, and the blood is applied when sins are remitted in baptism
- Because sins are covered and people are reconciled, they can come boldly to the throne of grace to obtain mercy, have peace with God, access by faith into grace, and rejoice in hope

thank you for remembering me this Christmas at this time of year and appreciate each and every one of you that have been faithful to put up with me all year long this thing reflecting over that since this will be the last lesson this year we started after a almost two-year Hiatus of not being able to have classes due to the pandemic and the shutdown everything that was going on there and coming back to teach and looking at kind of resetting and starting back into Bible class and we've made a few changes this year done some things that are a little bit different started out uh just some lessons on salvation and the things like that and then we kind of shifted gears and went to the prepared lessons that that were available and then about September into September we shifted gears again and decided we were going to do our own lessons and kind of focus a little more deeply on some of the word of God and so we have done that and you've put up with me through all of that and I appreciate that I say I love each and every one of you man so thankful that that you're here Faithfully to hear the word of God for all of our guests that are with us today so glad that you are here to join us and we're glad to have you some for the first time some back for more and so we appreciate that man if you're joining us online and we're glad to have you with us as well
we're going to look to several verses of scripture we're going to start in Genesis chapter 3 because that's where we've been for the last month month and a half I want to read two verses there and then we're going to read several other verses scattered throughout the word of God Genesis chapter 3 beginning not beginning but I'll read verses 7 and 21. verse 7 it said the eyes of them talking about Adam and Eve were both open and they knew they were naked and they sowed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons and verse 21 tells us this and that the Adam also unto his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins and clothed them Leviticus chapter 17. I want to read one verse from there it says this for the life of the flesh is in the blood and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls for it is the blood that makes an atonement for the soul Matthew says this even as the son of man came not here's the reason Jesus came he came not to be ministered unto but to minister and to give his life a ransom for many Paul writes in Galatians 4 he said but when in verse 4 when the fullness of the time was come God sent forth his son made of a woman made under the law to redeem them that were under the law that we might receive the adoptions of adoption of sons Hebrews 9 and 22 says this and almost all things are by the law purged with blood and without the shedding of blood there is no remission and then finally from First Peter chapter one so we're hearing a bunch of different voices here we're in the voice of Moses we're hearing the voice of Jesus the voice of Paul writer of Hebrews and now First Peter 1 18-20 said this for as much as ye know that you are not redeemed with corruptable things a silver and gold from your vain conversations or the empty way of life that was received by tradition from your fathers but with the precious blood of Christ as of a lamb without blemish and without spot who verily was fordained before the foundation of the world but was manifest in these last times for you
there's an old song that I take the title of this lesson from and the old song said there is nothing but the blood in fact it starts out this way nothing can for sin a tone nothing but the blood of Jesus man I'm thankful those words still ring true amen however you sing them however you say them I mean it is still true the words of that hymn proclaim the truth that only the precious sinless blood of Jesus Christ can bring us back into a right standing in a right relationship before God not any good works we do we can try to earn our way it does not do us any good Isaiah reminds us this in Isaiah 64 6 he said but we are all as an unclean thing all of our righteousnesses and I've noticed in particularly as I read that verse again yesterday it's plural all of our righteousnesses everything you do every way you try to do it he said it's all as a filthy rags and we do Fade as a leaf in our iniquities like the wind have taken us away and then Paul in the New Testament concurs with that in Romans 3 23 he said this for all have sinned and we've come short of the glory of God however while our best could never reach never obtain God's forgiveness and God's mercy and we can't earn it and we don't deserve it and anything else the grace of God makes it available to us aren't you thankful for that that it is only by his grace
so as we approach Christmas I think it's appropriate that we look at the real reason Jesus came in the first place there's lots of songs a lot of Christmas things going on a lot of things we hear but we need to look at the reason Jesus came Lainey roof would us wrote a song several years back in the late 70s did A Christmas album and he titled it he was born to die the song said he was born to die that I might live now a lot of people look at Jesus and they say well he was a great teacher he was a prophet he was he just some good philosopher if you will he has a lot of good teachings and and they kind of leave it there you know I like to read about Jesus because he was a good teacher because he had some good principles others look at him and say well he was the The Miracle Worker he was the one that raised the dead and he was one that cleansed lepers and opened blinded eyes and and deaf ears and did all these kind of things and cast out devils and so they look at him as a miracle worker But ultimately those are not the reasons that he came yes he was all of that but that's not why he came Matthew records Jesus saying in Matthew 28 or 20 and 28 even as the son of man came not to be ministered unto so I didn't come to get all the accolades into and everybody to wait on me but to minister and and here is the real reason to give his life a ransom for many that's what he came for to give his life for us and Luke recalls Jesus saying in Luke 19 10 the son of man is come to seek and to save that which is lost that was his purpose not necessarily to have teaching although it was there not necessarily to do the Menace Miracles that he did but to seek out and to save to provide salvation for those that are lost three of the four gospels Matthew Mark Luke all record that Jesus was traveling with his disciples toward Jerusalem to face crucifixion I think Mark's version is Mark's writing is the most interesting particularly because of verse 10 32 he said and they were in the way going up to Jerusalem and Jesus went before them and here's what it says about it they were amazed that word refers to being terrified if you will and as they followed they were afraid why because the Pharisees had told them if you come back here we're going to kill you in fact one of the disciples said well why don't we all go Jesus you want to go to Jerusalem it's all gone we'll all die together you know being probably a little bit smart alecly but he said you know that's what so they're going to Jerusalem and they're amazed and they're afraid and they're terrified you know here we're going we're following him I hope he knows what he's doing and he began the Bible says he took again the 12 and began to tell them what things should happen unto him and so he tells them this saying and as I said all three gospels record this behold we go up to Jerusalem we're heading there and the son of man is going to be delivered unto the chief priest and unto the scribes and they shall condemn him to death and they shall deliver him to the Gentiles and they shall mock him and they shall Scourge him and they shall spit upon him and shall kill him and the third day he shall rise again were it not for that event or if it were not for this purpose or this time that Jesus said I'm going to Jerusalem to fulfill the will of my father I'm going there to be crucified to be killed and to raise again on their third day if it weren't for that there would have been no Christmas Day he wouldn't have come to this earth if it weren't for this purpose the reason Jesus came on that first Christmas was to die for mankind that we may live
now to tie this together we start in Genesis and that's where we've been learning the first book of this Bible the first three chapters of this Bible we're going to finish today our study from these three chapters for a quick recap because I know not everyone was here for everything and obviously we're not going to go into it all in detail but we saw at the beginning of this study that all of the New Testament looked writers viewed the Old Testament through the lens of the Gospel of Jesus Christ so as they begin to write the New Testament they looked back to what is that much of the Bible to write this much of the Bible and so they look back but through it all they looked at it through what Jesus did and so that was our first lesson Jesus even told us in John 5 39 if you search the scriptures this part of it he said they are they which testify of me that's what they're talking about so rightfully the writers of the New Testament said well how does Jesus fit into this narrative and so they looked at the Old Testament and looked for that we then spoke of how that God when God spoke in the beginning in the beginning God said and it was he set forth everything that would happen in this universe he created and in fact at the very beginning the word that he spoke pointed toward the combination of his creation which was Jesus Christ fact the Bible says and John writes in the beginning was the word now he was talking about the word that God spoke but he said that word became flesh and dwelt among us and that was Jesus Christ and so this was God's and what he was saying was God's plan from the very beginning and what God intended was all realized in what we know as Christmas Day Jesus coming to this earth that word spoken becomes flesh the creation of light again pointed to the to the True Light which was going to come into the world and cometh unto every man then we observe God's faithfulness when he said I have given you the seasons and I've given you signs and I've given you days and I've given you years I've given you all these things teaching us and the Bible goes through we went into detail looking at it how these things pointed to the fact that God is faithful God always keeps his word God does not change just as a son comes up every morning just as it goes down every night just as they're always as hot summer days there's going to be cold winter days like we have today it's going to happen year after year after year and all of that points to the fact that God does not change as we study man's creation we saw how God breathed into man making him a living soul and how that breath of the spirit is essential for the born-again experience because man in Adam the Bible says all died but God will again breathe into us when he fills us with his spirit and make us again what he intends we taught a lesson earlier in the year but I referenced it as we talked about this I didn't want to re-teach it since I did not know at that time we were going to go into Genesis but God made Man In His Image and how that image became corrupted through Adam but through Jesus Christ we are being conformed back into the image of Christ Adam Dennis taught about God resting on the seventh day and how the Holy Ghost the Bible says is a rest for our weary Soul the rest that shall cause the weary to rest we saw the church typified and the husband and wife relationship that started in Genesis and Paul looks back and said that was talking about he was talking about the church being wed to Jesus Christ then we looked at chapter three and we've been there ever since but we turned ourselves study to the devil's devices how he tempts us his methods of Temptation how he did that and how the Eve was deceived and how Adam willfully disobeyed and chose to ignore what God had said and then we looked at the implications of the Fall the things that it caused and the things that would happen afterwards brother Cardin spoke to us about the first man Adam who was the one in Genesis we read about and then what the Bible calls the second Adam that was Jesus Christ the one the one from heaven the seed of the woman was our next lesson showing how that Jesus did not inherit the sin and death of Adam because he didn't come from Adam's seed but he was conceived of the Holy Ghost there again part of that Christmas Story and finally last week he looked at the promised Redeemer as we see him prophesied throughout the Old Testament and so this lesson will complete the scene as we see the necessity of the messiah's death even in the midst of the tragic events and consequences of the fall and all the things that we see there God gave at least two precedents for the future first was the Judgment of the serpent or Satan there was a curse upon him and we pointed out that God immediately as he questions what have you done and the woman says well it's not my fault the serpent beguiled me and we looked at Adam and said well it's not my fault it's a woman he gave me and they kept pointing their fingers
God never gives the serpent the opportunity to say why did you do this he just immediately begins to curse him he does not curse Adam and Eve he curses the ground and he curses some of the things that there are half that they are created to do makes it an infinitely more difficult but yet he does not curse them but he does curse the serpent so that was the first judgment God established and we studied last week that a savior would come who would strike the death blow to the enemy I will put enmity between thee and the woman and it shall bruise thy head and thou shalt bruise his heel and then secondly important it to our study today was the death of the animals that would provide through the substitution of their bro blood a covering for Adam and Eve and so we're going to look at that and more in detail today these two principles the defeat of the devil and the shedding of blood to cover sin are the basis for this doctrine of we call the atonement we'll talk about that word a little bit more in a little bit but from this point of these principles being established there is a continuous thread of thought that carries throughout the entire Bible there is always this talk about blood being shed the Bible tells us that life is in the blood so when it talks about blood it is saying that a life has to be given to cover sinful man so to restore this broken relationship that happened and we talked about that in the Garden of Eden mankind had to have a way to overcome his sin here's what we understand God is Holy God is separate God is righteous god is perfect God is all those things and man is not sin is Unholy it is unrighteousness the Bible tells us that light has no fellowship with Darkness it just doesn't fit together you can't do it it's light in here because the lights are on but it can't be dark in here at the same time it's going to be one or the other there is no Fellowship he said there is no righteousness has no communion with wickedness you can't put them together and say well we can be righteous here and wicked here all at the same time no it cannot work that way sin separated Mankind from God but God in his grace and in his mercy and in his plan from the beginning desire to restore that relationship that he knew that sin would Sever and that was going to be there here's what he said in Isaiah 59 and 2. he said but your iniquities have separated between you and your God and your sins notice how he said that your sins have hid his face from you that he will not hear now someone said well God's just hiding from us or God hides his face no your sins have hit his face in other words it's a good color to use your sins come before his face and hide them it's not that God's saying well you sin I'm turning from you no your sins have blocked your sins have hidden his face from you and so that that is how Isaiah describes up to this that he will not hear so sin stands between God and His creation and sin blocked that close relationship that God desired that communion that Adam and Eve had in the Garden of Eden furthermore that sin Dooms mankind to no longer live in the presence of God but to a fiery judgment that the Bible talks about where the really the chief torment of that judgment yes it is the fire but it is the fact that there will always infer eternity be a separation from God and here's what we know we cannot change our fallen nature we cannot change this image that Adam put in us and and passed on To Us by our own devices a sinful person cannot change their heart to do good you can reform you can do all those things but we really cannot change our hearts to do what God wants us to be I know people have recovered they've gotten over things they've they've turned their lives around in a lot of different ways but it never puts us in right standing with God by what we try to do and here's the other thing since all of us are under the condemnation of death the Bible says all have sinned comes short of his glory and because we are all under that same condemnation another person cannot offer to become the means of correcting that for us right it's a simple example if there are two people on death row one of the inmates can't say you know what how about you take me instead of him let him go no you're already both condemned you can't step in and be the substitute because you've already got the same judgment well since we are all under the same Judgment of sin because we were born in sin as David said and shape and iniquity none of us can say you know what I'll take the blame let everybody else go no because you're guilty too so it doesn't help it can only happen when there was one that can pay the penalty of sin one that did not have the curse of death and that sinful nature that very one we observed last week as the seed of the woman
and so God established the precedent that blood would be the cost of sin now it's not real clear here until you look at the entire entirety of scripture and many of the verses that we read but here's what we understand when Adam and Eve fell the first thing they tried to do was cover their nakedness they made an effort in other words that was their works that was their method they sewed together fig leaves and said well we'll just hide what we have done we'll hide our sin we'll hide the fact that now we know that we are naked and obviously we have partaken the forbidden fruit and so they made their attempt to cover their own shame and their own nakedness but to properly cover their nakedness and shame God had to provide a covering and so God Bible said made coats of skin and clothed them I can't imagine what it felt like to Adam and Eve if he watched and horror as God took animals and killed them to provide coats of skin because up until this time the Bible tells us that Adam and Eve were given every herb of the garden and the fruit of the trees and that to eat they were never told eat animals maybe it probably had never at that point even entered into their mind because that's not how creation was at that time and so the very fact to watch an animal that they probably because nothing hurt or destroyed and they you know they could pet the animals they could ride the animals they could be friend you know it did not matter at that time and to watch one of them be killed and then be covered with the skin from that animal that probably had to really impact their hearts and their mind but what God was showing was it takes life an innocent life to cover the sin of the guilty
we often refer to this as the atonement the Hebrew word it's used throughout the Old Testament we see this word atonement I said we'd come back and talk about it a little bit later we'll do that now atonement is only used once in the Old Testament or in the New Testament but is used over and over in the Old Testament and it refers to a covering something that covers up that is really what the root of that that word means and so it is a covering covering for sin in this case it was a covering for Adam and Eve with coats of skin in the New Testament it is used one time however it's interesting because the word that is translated atonement in the New Testament everywhere else in the New Testament is not atonement it's translated reconciliation but the concept is solid because here's what it is once sins are covered then sinful man can be reconciled to God and so I think what it's showing is in Genesis it's talking about you need a covering and in the New Testament say we have the covering through the blood of Jesus so now we are reconciled to God now those sins are covered and you can have that communion with God and so that's why the Old Testament talks about you need covered you need covered you need an atonement you need the blood you need something to cover those sins and you get to the New Testament and said you're reconciled to God you're reconciled now are you reconciled and so those Concepts work together there is no reconciliation without atonement and there's no need for atonement unless you're going to be reconciled so they work together sinful man can be reconciled to God another word that plays into this idea in fact two more words that we see over and over one is Ransom he gave his life as a ransom for many a ransom that is the life of the innocent was given to pay the price for the guilty Redemption the fact that we are redeemed we are paid for we are bought back the Bible says Paul writes he said you are bought with a price and what was the price it was the blood of Jesus Christ so all these concepts are just wrapped up in this idea of an atonement so we'll use that word atonement when every time I say it and if I don't say it just think covering this is what covers sin all right it's in that's the concept and this concept of the substitutionary death continues throughout scripture if you read through the Books of Moses Genesis Exodus Leviticus Numbers Deuteronomy particularly in Exodus and again probably in Deuteronomy you can read a lot of this there was a plan given to Moses to build a tabernacle and the purpose of that Tabernacle was to have a place to meet with God but it was also a place of sacrifice and sacrifices of animals were Central to new to the Old Testament worship the priest shed the blood of animals in front of the Brazen Altar and they would carry that collected blood they would bleed out that animal through the Tabernacle to the holiest of holies the high priest would go in there once a year and he would offer that blood as a atonement that's why Leviticus 17 that we read and said the life of the flesh is in the blood so by carrying that bowl of blood what they were saying is here is an innocent life and I'm going to go in where the presence of God is and I'm going to offer this innocent life that it can cover the sins of all us guilty out here that it can atone for us and so he said the life of the flesh is in the blood I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls for it is the blood that maketh an atonement atonement for the soul putting covering in there I've given it to you upon the altar to make a covering for your souls those sinful souls for it is the blood that makes that covering for the soul
in fact that Tabernacle on every article of furniture and we're not doing a tabernacle plan study but it all depicted some aspect of that atonement some aspect it was an object lesson for mankind and although it no longer exists the pattern speaks to others under the New Testament particularly in the book of Hebrews if you read through there you learn of a greater and more perfect Tabernacle talking about a Heavenly Tabernacle and it is greater and it is more perfect the Bible says because it is not made with human hands he said it is a tabernacle that is in heaven it is eternal and time never corrupts it corrupts it now now that that's some pretty heavy Concepts but what the writer of Hebrews was saying is everything that you saw on Earth in the Tabernacle was duplicated is a duplication of what's in heaven he said that's the real thing and this was a type and this was a shadow and this was a plan that's why Moses was told when you make this and he said it over and over to Moses be sure that you make it just like the pattern that you saw when you were in the mountain I'm giving you the plans make it exactly like I said don't change you well you know we ought to make this room a little bit bigger or maybe we should make that smile or why do we really need that piece of furniture let's not fasten it that way or he said no you make it exactly like that because this is how it is in heaven this is the real Tabernacle and I want you to see what it looks like and so what we understand from the word of God is when Jesus shed his blood for our sins and he arose and he went into heaven the Bible tells us that he took his blood and he offered it on that true Tabernacle to cover sins and we can be certain the blood shed on Calvary never loses its power they had to do it every year it was a calendar set on their day the day of atonement the day of covering where they would come in they would offer more sacrifices to pronounce sins over one goat they would send that goat away symbolic of those sins being taken away from them then they take another goat and they would take the blood of that and take it in there to the Tabernacle take it in upon the Altar and they would do that year after year after year because it never paid the price for sins it just hit him from view for another year God honored those sacrifices only because of the faith and Obedience of the individuals involved and also because he was pointing forward to something greater God knew that when the fullness of time would come Jesus blood would become the true atoning agent the true covering that would Purge Mankind and set him free from sin when the fullness of the time was come
I love that that reading for that particularly at Christmas time that fullness of the time God sends forth his son made of a woman made under the law for the purpose to redeem them that are under the law that we might receive the adoption of son I know some people don't like to talk about blood they don't like churches a lot of them took their churches that went through their song books and took the word blood out of it they don't preach about the blood don't talk about the blood but it is integral to this word of God from Genesis chapter 3 all the way to Revelation that said who are these These are they that have been redeemed by the blood of the lamb and so we see this some call it a crimson cord that runs throughout scripture talk talking about blood writer of Hebrews explained the blood of animals that served to cleanse the Flesh of the people who obeyed Moses law but it never got to their hearts the blood of bulls and goats it satisfied satisfied those requirements that were set forth in the Old Testament making them ceremonially clean writer of Hebrews said it this way the the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling the unclean it Sanctified or it set apart to the purifying of the flesh I thought about that idea this this ceremonially clean it's easy for me to say right ceremonially clean
you can take a pig and you can scrub it clean I'm thinking of Charlotte's Web here pour buttermilk on it make it shine take it to the state fair win a blue ribbon you can dress it up you can do whatever you want with it but as soon as you turn it loose you know where it's going to go it's going to find some mud to lay in because you can't change the pick that's what happened with the blood of bulls and goats it shined them up and they looked good for that day and said okay my sins are covered but they went right back because nothing changed inside their life but when jesus carried his blood into the perfect technical the perfect sacrifice the one that knew no sin it purged not only the outside but it cleans up the inside it will change your life writer Heber said it's neither by the blood of goats and of calves but by Jesus own blood he said he entered once not every year into the holy Place having obtained and here's what it is he has attained Eternal Redemption for us I like those words he obtained it he got it Eternal which means it's forever and he paid the price he doesn't do it next week and he'll do it again next week no one time he paid the price that will work for all time it worked in the Old Testament New Testament when it happened and it works today the blood of Jesus went far beyond cleansing the flesh but it reaches down and it changes our hearts she said it this way how much more shall the blood of Christ how much more who through the eternal spirit offered himself without spot to God here's what it's going to do not clean your flesh he said it is going to purge your conscience from dead works so that you can serve the Living God it's going to get down to the root of the matter it's going to cover your heart it's going to take care of that thing the blood of bulls and goats never dealt with the sins they just took care of what already happened what was in the past but it never changed our life Jesus went beyond that correcting the past mistakes yes but covering our our sins and giving us the ability to live for him the blood of Jesus Christ breaks our servitude to sin it covers that carnal nature and it frees us up to serve Jesus Christ human beings could not accomplish the atonement no one could die for another since we are all under the same condemnation but Jesus was the perfect sacrifice that's what Christmas is really all about that's why he came and we can sing Here Comes Santa Claus and we can have fun and do all other kind of things but really it's about this
the ability came for two factors number one it was through the eternal spirit and number two it was because he was without spot or wrinkle or any any sin in his life everything about the birth the life the ministry the death the resurrection of Jesus Christ was motivated by the spirit the Bible says this it was the spirit that overshadowed Mary that which is conceived in heard Christmas Story we hear it every year that which is conceived of her is of the Holy Ghost when Jesus was baptized it was the spirit that descended upon him and the voice from Heaven that said this is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased it is the spirit the Bible says that drove him into the Wilderness for preparation for the ministry while he was tempted of the devil and overcame that it was a spirit who worked for him to perform great Miracles it was the spirit that drove him to go to Jerusalem to give his life on the cross and it was ultimately the spirit that raised him up from the dead and then as he ascended into heaven it was a promise I'm sending my spirit he said I am with you but I shall be in you so everything about Jesus is driven by this spirit of God that's why when John would write considering Jesus Jesus Christ he said for whom in John 3 34 he said for whom God had sent speaketh the word of he whom God sent speaks the word of God for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him in other words when it came to Jesus God didn't just say Well here here's just a little bit and this will be enough I'll measure some out the Bible says to every one of us has given a measure of faith God gives you enough faith that you can turn to him and to be saved every one of us you've got it whether you know it or not he said I gave to every man a Measure of Faith but not Jesus he said I didn't measure it out I just poured it on him to wit that God was in Christ reconciling the world unto himself so you can say well he was a prophet he was a good man he was a good teacher no he was a power of God living and abiding in Jesus Christ that would give his life and give his blood to cover your sin that's why we say it's only through the blood of Jesus Christ nothing but the blood can wash away your sins so he said he was by the eternal spirit and then also he noted he was without spot referring to that sinless nature in his life we won't go back and rehash it because that was last week's lesson but as we talked about he did not come from the seat of Adam he did not inherit that carnal nature that which was conceived in Mary was of the Holy Ghost his father was God Almighty he said I will put enmity between thee and the in between her seed that seed of the woman and because of that Jesus had no sin he was not born in sin in shape and iniquity we were but him that knew no sin the Bible says became sin for us so there's another place God hath laid on him God placed on the iniquity of us all and so it is his shed blood that can reconcile us to be what God wants us to be the New Testament guarantees certain benefits and protections to the believer
we often use a phrase around here and you're around Pentecostals at least and probably a lot of other Christians too you'll hear the phrase plead the blood we just need to plead the blood what does that mean we use that sometimes throw it around maybe maybe a little too flippantly I don't know what does it mean to plead the blood I always see it this way if you ever go into court of law there is there is one option that you get and that is to plead the Fifth I don't have to indict myself right I don't have to say I'm guilty I'm just not going to talk about it well when you plead the blood what you're doing is saying I don't have to talk about this the Bible calls Satan the accuser of the Brethren and what he likes to do is come around and say yeah well you're a no good this and that and I know what you did and I know your past and I know what if you you know I know what you're thinking I know this and I know that and he will accuse and he will accuse and every time we make a little mistake he will accuse and he will he will bring up things that we've repented over and make it difficult sometimes for us to have Victory because we're all well I just can't because I know what I was and I know what I've done in my life and all these things but when you're covered by the blood of Jesus you don't have to listen to him instead you say I plead the blood what you're saying is sorry Satan it's covered yeah I we don't forget right I know what I did I know how I lived I know where I was wrong it's covered aren't you thankful that why that's why Paul would write there is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus who walk not after the flesh but after the spirit when he puts his spirit in you when you go down in water and those sins are remitted and that blood is applied to your life at baptism once that's done you complete the blood you complete the blood
and finally I got a minute left because of that we have access to the presence of God we are reconciled there's that word sins are covered and now I am reconciled I am brought back together to God the writer of Hebrews said let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace and obtain Mercy come boldly you don't have to drag yourself in with your head down you can come boldly those sins are covered I come to worship my God therefore being justified by faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ so that's that reconciliation I'm no longer at odds with him I have peace with him and he said because of that I have access by faith into his grace wherein we stand and because of that he said I'm rejoicing in the hope of the glory of God I'm rejoicing in what God has for us nothing but the blood nothing but the blood why don't you stand today amen why did Jesus come to shed his blood to cover your sins so that we can be reconciled to him why don't you lift a hand and thank him for that so thankful Jesus for the blood that you shed the life that you provide your life that spotless sinful Lamb of God that would cover my dirty sinful life and cover it and open up a relationship with you that we can come boldly before you how they end up access into your presence we thank you for it Jesus we thank you for it in Jesus name Jesus name
