Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
Reading Creation in Genesis 1 and 2
- Welcoming the class, the teacher reads Genesis 1 — the living creatures brought forth after their kind and God's word, "Let us make man in our image" — together with Genesis 2:7 and 2:19, and chooses for the lesson the title "The Breath of Life."
- This quarter the class is studying the first three chapters of Genesis through the lens of the Gospel, looking for the spiritual implications of creation; earlier lessons traced God's speaking at creation to its culmination in the Word becoming flesh in Jesus Christ, and the heavenly lights to the faithfulness of God and His new mercies.
- Genesis chapter 1 states the fact that God created man in His own image but does not tell how He did it; chapter 2 goes back over the same truth and adds the detail that the Lord formed man of the dust of the ground.
Scriptures: Genesis 1; Genesis 2
Created in the Image of God
- Since God is a Spirit and no man has seen God at any time, the image of God in man is not physical: God created man a spiritual being with a rational and a moral nature, able to think, to reason, to create, and to choose between right and wrong.
- The image is seen in God's own attributes: James describes the wisdom that is from above as first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy — and true wisdom comes only from God.
- Adam bore that image at his creation: he was pure because he knew nothing of sin, peaceable and at peace with God and the world around him, gentle in a world where nothing hurt or destroyed, compliant with God's purpose, compassionate, and without partiality or hypocrisy.
- The psalmist's word is recalled: God made man a little lower than the angels and crowned him with glory and honor, giving him dominion over the animals and over all the earth, as a free moral agent who could choose his own path.
Scriptures: James (book-only, as spoken); Psalms (book-only, as spoken)
The Fall and the Marred Image
- Genesis chapter 3 tells of the fall of man and the entrance of sin into the world; Paul's word in Romans is that as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin, death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.
- The image of God in man was marred by the fall: no longer pure, no longer at peace with God, no longer gentle in a harsh world of thorns and thistles, no longer compliant with God's will — compassion soon replaced by murder, partiality become a way of life, and hypocrisy showing itself even in the fig leaves Adam sewed to hide his nakedness.
- Adam did not pass God's image on to his children: Genesis 5:3 says that after God created man in His likeness, Adam begat a son in his own likeness, after his image — the sinful, carnal image of Adam is what is inherited, which is why David confessed he was shapen in iniquity and conceived in sin.
- The Christian life is the recovery of that image: believers spend their lives being conformed to the image of Christ, and when He shall appear they shall be like Him, fully regaining the image of God at His second coming.
Scriptures: Genesis 3; Romans (book-only, as spoken); Genesis 5:3
The Breath Makes the Difference: A Living Soul
- Man and the animals were both formed out of the ground, and would seem to be no different, except for one small but very significant detail: when man was formed, God breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul — nowhere does Genesis record that breathing for any animal.
- The soul is the spiritual and immortal part of man: the seat of his emotions, personality, thoughts, affections and reasonings, where the decisions of the will are made; animals share the principle of life that dies with the body, but man's spiritual, reasonable and immortal soul is chiefly what consists in his resemblance to God.
- Animals act largely by instinct and need no teaching to hunt, communicate or fly, while man operates by learning — his behavior is taught and shown — again showing he is unique from the animal world because he has the breath of life.
- God took man and put him in the Garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it, and commanded him that of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil he should not eat, for in the day he ate he would surely die; Ezekiel's word stands with it: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.
- When Adam and Eve were cast from the garden, they did not die physically at that moment, though they would die eventually — something died in their very soul; sin drove a wedge between them and God, and though they could still think and choose, the image they had displayed had become corrupted.
Scriptures: Genesis 2:15; Ezekiel (book-only, as spoken)
The Earthy Nature: Living by Fleshly Instinct
- Sinful man follows the instincts of his flesh much as the beasts that share his origin from the ground: Peter speaks of some as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, who speak evil of things they do not understand, and Jude repeats that what such men know naturally, as brute beasts, they corrupt themselves in.
- It is not in the power of man to live above sin on his own, and the flesh cannot be trusted: Paul charged the church to put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts, and testified that he himself kept his body under and brought it into subjection lest, having preached to others, he himself be lost — the battle is continuous, won today and fought again tomorrow.
- Paul in Ephesians describes the soul dead in trespasses and sins: walking according to the course of this world and the spirit that works in the children of disobedience, living in the lusts of the flesh and fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and by nature the children of wrath — and "we all" are included, so no one is exempt from the same struggle.
- Understanding of the things of God comes only when the Spirit works in a life: Job said there is a spirit in man, and the inspiration — the breath — of the Almighty gives him understanding; only through the Spirit can the image be restored that the fall knocked out of man, as it were knocking the breath out of him.
Scriptures: 2 Peter 2:12; Jude 1:10; Ephesians 2:1-3; Job (book-only, as spoken)
The Breath Restored: Dry Bones, the Holy Ghost, and the New Creature
- God carried Ezekiel into a valley full of very dry bones and asked, "Son of man, can these bones live?" — and promised, "Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live," with sinews, flesh and skin laid upon them; the bones came together and were covered, but there was no breath in them until Ezekiel prophesied to the wind, and then the breath came into them, and they lived and stood up on their feet, an exceeding great army.
- The lesson for us is that no matter how dead a person may feel, how difficult his life may seem, or how deep in sin he may be, the living God can breathe into his situation and bring new life — there is always hope when the Spirit of God moves in a life.
- In the New Testament Jesus breathed on His disciples and said, "Receive ye the Holy Ghost," and on the day of Pentecost a sound from heaven came as a rushing mighty wind and filled the house — the breath of God breathed into man again, restoring the right fellowship with God that sin had broken.
- Whom the Son makes free is free indeed — free from sin and from the carnal nature — and Paul writes to the Corinthians that the first man Adam was made a living soul, but the last Adam a quickening, life-giving spirit: as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly, for if any man be in Christ he is a new creature, and old things are passed away.
- The choice is set before every hearer in God's question in Ezekiel 33:11: He has no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live — "turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die?" — and Jesus came that we might have life, and have it more abundantly: not just freedom but complete freedom, not just joy but joy unspeakable and full of glory, peace that passes all understanding, and perfect love that casts out all fear.
- Believers are being changed into that same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord — a progression, a little more each day — and the lesson closes standing in prayer that everyone in the sound of the teacher's voice would let the Spirit of God breathe and work in them, turning from dead works and the works of the flesh to become alive in Him and become what He wants them to be.

we want to look to the word of God I'm going to read we've been reading in Genesis so we're going to stay there for the rest of this quarter Genesis chapter 1 and I'm going to read three verses in chapter one I'm going to read a couple verses in chapter 2. Genesis chapter 1 verse 24 says this and God said let the Earth bring forth the living creature after his kind cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth after his kind and it was so jumping down to 26 is that in God said let us make man in our image after our likeness and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea over the fowl of the air over the cattle over all the Earth and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the Earth so God created man in his own image in the image of God created he him and then to verse chapter 2 read verse 7 and verse 19 verse 7 says this and the Lord God formed man of the Dust of the ground he breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and Man became a living soul and then from chapter 2 verse 19 and out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every fowl of the earth and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them and whatsoever Adam called every living creature that was the name thereof
chosen for a title for this lesson today the Breath of Life the Breath of Life this quarter we are studying for those that are just joining us and is a little bit of a review the first three chapters of Genesis and we're looking through these chapters as much as possible through the lens of the Gospel so rather than just seeing creation as the process by which God created all and we are doing that but more importantly we're looking into the spiritual implications of this portion of scripture and we we see how the the words of God and creation we have seen how they culminated in his word becoming flesh as he revealed himself through Jesus Christ the Bible said and God said God's speaking at creation God declaring the end from the beginning at creation was really the beginning but it culminated in the word being made flesh in Jesus Christ
we studied how God spoke light into darkness and saw how that the light of the Gospel shines into the darkness of sin through Jesus Christ The True Light John said which light with every man that cometh unto the world and so we studied that last week we saw how God created the Heavenly lights the Sun the moon the stars for the purpose he said of giving us signs and seasons and days and years and then looking at that we observed that these are a constant reminder to us of the faithfulness of God he said I give them to that so that every morning when your son comes up you know my mercies are new every time it goes down you know I will never forsake my covenants I am a faithful God
now had I planned this series back in January which I admit I did not we were using a different curriculum and we changed it this quarter but had I planned it back then today I would be teaching about how God created Man In His Image but since we already did that this year on January 16th if you really want to hear that lesson I think it is available on YouTube I believe if you want to search that however I do think it would be helpful for a short recap before we look at some other aspects of man's creation specifically the breath of life that I want to talk about today
so the verses from our text this morning remind us that God said let us make man in our image and after our own likeness and he created man in his own image in the image of God created he him we observe that since God is a spirit what does that mean I mean to say that you're made in the image of God because John said no man had seen God at any time so I think it is appropriate to ask what that image consists of and the answer seems most clear to me is that the almighty God created Man In His Image as a spiritual being with a rational and a moral nature in other words we could think and we could choose from right and wrong we could do those kind of things God created us that way choice to to live for him or choose not to live for him in other words in the beginning God imparted to man characteristics and qualities that are similar to his own now we understand that he knows all things we understand he is has all power we understand he is everywhere so we don't fit the bill on any one of those things but yet we do have the ability to do some things and we do have creative ability and the ability to reason and those kind of things
so to understand this God image I think we need to look at the attributes of God as the Bible talks about them what does it mean what is God like and Isaiah described the spirit of the Lord he said it is the spirit of wisdom and Paul refers to God as the only wise God so true wisdom only comes from God because it is inherent in his nature that is what wisdom is
and so James then begins to describe this wisdom to us and he said first off wisdom is pure and then it's Peaceable it's gentle it's easy to be entreated it's full of mercy and good fruits it's without partiality and without high hypocrisy now that may not be the definition you would use of wisdom you'd probably say making good choices and looking at situations but this is how the Bible defines wisdom that comes from above and it is that image I believe that wisdom in which Man was created
I mean if we look at Adam he was pure because he didn't know sin nothing about Sin right he was Peaceable because there was no strife and he was at peace with the world around him he was at peace with God with his creator he was gentle because God placed him in the in a world where literally nothing hurts or destroys he could go to any animal he could go pet the Lions he could you know would not matter what could happen it was a gentle world no no destruction nothing like that going on there he was easy to be entreated in other words he was compliant with God's purpose God could ask him God could talk to him and Adam was was very compliant not rebellious against God he was compassionate he was without partiality and there was no hypocrisy he had no one to nothing to hide and really there was no one to impress right it was just him and even the garden he didn't have to be hypocritical about what he did he didn't have to be partial because well I'm going to parcel to this person and not there was none of that going on
and so Adam was the crown jewel of God's creation the psalmist said it this way you made him a little lower than the angels and you crowned him with Glory and Honor he was given dominion over all the animals over all the Earth he was given creative ability he was given the ability to rationalize or to think and he was created that free moral agent where he had the ability to choose his own path
Genesis chapter 3 tells us of the fall of Man in the entrance of sin into the world we're not there yet in our study it'll be a couple weeks before we we get into Genesis chapter 3 but today we look past that and we see this image of God and what happened to it Paul wrote this in the Romans concerning Adams he said as by one man sin entered into the world when Adam failed sin entered the world and death by sin so that death passed upon all men for that all have sinned and here's what we gleaned from all this the image had been marred the image of God was there in man had been messed up that's what had been beautifully created now bore the stains of sin on it because we can look at it Adam was no longer pure because there was sin in his life he was no longer Peaceable because now he was at odds with God so there was not that peace there no anymore he was no longer gentle because now he faced a cruel harsh world where the animals would turn on him and where thorns and thistles were going to come up and things changed for him he was no longer easy to be entreated because he was no longer compliant with the will of God but he was carnal and wanted to do things his way and compassion we find would soon be replaced with murder and partiality would become a way of life with people and hypocrisy showed its ugly head even as Adam sews together fig leaves to hide his nakedness and so now he's being very hypocritical and and so what we find is man's image was no longer the image of his creator he looked to the same physically but spiritually the Bible lets us know he had died
I think that's a very important because society places a high priority on building self-esteem and that's okay to an extent but many today will live a sinful lifestyle and when they're questioned about it they say well that's just the way God created me no that's not how God intended for you to be or what God created what we fail to realize is that we are no longer born with that perfect image of God in our life Adam was created in the image of God but the Bible tells us that's not the image he passed to his sons
look at the words of Genesis Chapter 5 Verse 3 verses said these are the book of the generations of Adam in the day God created man in the likeness of God made him so yes he was in the image of God when God created him and then he went on to say Adam lived 130 years and begat a son notice he doesn't say in God's likeness he said in his own likeness after his image so that is where we're at today it's not the image of God it was the image of Adam the sinful image that base carnal nature that depraved image if you will and that is why David would later write behold I was shaping an iniquity and in sin my mother conceived me notice he didn't say I was shaping in the image of God and this is how I am no he said we are shaping in iniquity he was not all that God intended yet furthermore in the words of Paul we read earlier he said death passed to all men because we you have all sinned and it is that adamant image that we have received
and in January the remainder of the lesson focused on how when we become a Christian we spend our life being conformed to the image of Christ that is what it is about it's becoming once again more and more like Jesus and more and more into that image that's what living for God is all about and here's what we know the Bible says when he shall appear we shall be like him for we shall see him as he is so one of these days we will regain that image of God in our lives but until then until we see him at his second coming in meantime we're just working to get there so that's a synopsis of that lesson
but we read the Genesis account today of the creation of man and I purposely read man's creation from both chapters one and two chapter 1 States the fact that God created man we read that that verse and it doesn't say a whole lot it said he created him in his image does not tell how God did it it doesn't go into any details about it it just said God created man in the image of God created he him male and female created to them and he blessed them be fruitful multiply he goes on and he leaves it at that chapter 2 goes back and looks again at this truth but it gives us a little bit more detail about what's going on in Chapter 2 we learned that man was formed from the dust of the earth now you don't see that in chapter one for the most part when we read chapter one it said and God said let there be light and there was light and God said let the waters team with animals and God said let the Earth bring forth the animals and God said let's make man and it doesn't go into any details about how he accomplished that but in Chapter 2 we learned that man was formed from the dust of the ground and that is repeated throughout scripture job said you know dust I was and thus I shall return the psalmist said like as a father pitieth his children the Lord pityth them that fear Him for he knows our frame and he remembers God remembers we are dust it's not uncommon even for non-christians to mention the fact that yeah well we're all going to be dust someday we're going to return to dust and so chapter 2 lets us know that this is how Man was created the Lord formed man the Bible said of the Dust of the ground and so he reached down and got a mud ball together and made a man and and created man what we also see and I read this verse These two verses also I talked about Genesis chapter 1 talking about the creation of animals let the Earth bring forth the living creature after his kind cattle creaming thing beast of the earth of its kind and it was so
but when you look at chapter 2 and we look at verse 19 it said out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field in every fowl of the air now we don't often think about that do we we know man we talk about you're dust because he reached out and got dirt and made a man we don't think well that's the same dirt that he used to make a cow and a sheep and a pig and a turkey and everything else that we see doesn't say that about the whales of it doesn't say he reached into the Earth or into the water to create them I don't know how he did it doesn't go through there but when it came to the animals he reached down into the same dirt that we came out of
now since we came from the same substance we really you would think we'd be no different right and some people see humans as that you're just another animal well that would be we would be no different if it weren't for one small but very significant detail when man was formed the Bible says that God breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and Man became a living Soul the Breath of God made all the difference to press the point further nowhere in Genesis does it record that God created a cow out of the earth and breathed it into his nostrils the breath of life it does not say that he formed them from the dust I don't know how he brought them to life but it was different Man became a living soul and the soul of man is unique you can't say that that cow has a soul in the same sense that a man does you can't say that that dog or cat or snake or bird or whatever else has a soul and
while it's beyond this scope of this lesson to go into a lot of detail about soul I think it will help us with the concept at least give us a little bit of a definition one theological dictionary says this the spiritual and Immortal part of man that's what the soul is it's a part that's going to live forever it is the spiritual part it is the immaterial aspect of a human being he said it is said by some to be the the seed of our emotions it's the center of our human personality it's what makes us unique it's where decisions are made by the will and the soul is something that he said differentiates man from animals they have life yes but man possesses a soul a soul
another Bible dictionary says it this way both men and animals together have this principle of life it's common to men and to animals which in animals it dies with the body when the animal dies that's the end of it there is no more he said there is in man a spiritual reasonable and Immortal Soul it's the seed of our thoughts and our affections our reasonings and that distinguishes us from the animals and it is chiefly what consists in our resemblance to God so that soul is if you will what gives us or what formed us in God's image it is the thing that is unique about man and it agrees wholeheartedly with that idea of image that we've discussed just a few minutes ago so man is unique because he possesses a soul when God breathes into him the breath of life
now here's what you notice you ever notice animals they behave differently than human because much of what an animal does it does by instinct it's only men that do so much that our behavior is learned right we go to school we have to learn you have to show a baby how to do this and how to do that you don't have to take your cat out so I'm going to teach you how to hunt see that you need to and show it how to pounce and show you don't have to do that a dog doesn't take language arts to learn how to communicate it's happy it's Tails wagging I don't know why it just does right it's mad it's going to show its teeth and stay away from it a bird doesn't need flying lessons we hear about the eagle the Bible talks about that stirs up its nest and when it does it just pushes its babies out and lets them fall no it doesn't say here's how you flap your wings oh come on let's go let's he just pushes them out now it won't let him hit the ground it sees it's they're not going to make it it'll swoop down and it'll pick them back up take them back with us and push them out again you'll figure it out right a honeybee doesn't look for a choreographer to learn how to do it special dance to tell it where the pollen is it just does it and what's even more amazing the other bees don't have to need an interpreter to understand what he's saying
and we don't operate as much by Instinct but rather we use what God has given us to learn most of what we do and in that he is unique from the animal world again Man was created in God's image because he has the Breath of Life
now here's what we read and we see in the Bible after God created man Genesis chapter 2 and verse 15 says this and the Lord God took man he put him in the Garden of Eden to dress and keep it and the Lord God commanded me in saying of every tree of the garden you may freely eat but of the tree of knowledge of Good and Evil you shall not eat from the day that you eat thereof Thou shalt surely die now we all know that story and as we said we'll get into that more detail in coming lessons but the point here is if you disobey my command if you eat of the tree that I tell you not to he said You shall die twice in Ezekiel God speaks to the prophet and he says this the soul the sinneth it shall die
however just as that image Motif was first brought up in chapter one here's what I think we we need to look at today and what I want to focus on this idea of God's breathing life is presented in chapter two and both I think of these concepts are introduced because they really set the stage for Mankind's condition after the fall but not only that about how mankind can become what God wants us to be
so when Adam and Eve were cast from the garden from the fellowship and the communion with God their very Nature's changed as we already mentioned their image was changed and while they did not die physically right at that very moment yes they would die eventually yet something died in their very being something died if you will in their soul they were created in God's image because the Breath of God was in them but sin and drove a wedge between them and God and the image they had displayed had become corrupted although they bore some likeness to the Creator they could still think they could still make choices there was a distinct difference in that difference we learn is sin they had chosen to follow the ways of the flesh rather than the ways of the spirit Paul would later write that they had become all together he uses the word earthy he said the first man Adam is of the earth he is earthy although not completely in other words their nature became more like that of the Beast that were taken from the same ground their nature was now sinful to the core they they despised if you will the Breath of God that soul and that that thing that he had put in them and I believe like the animals that God created sinful man operates more on Instinct much more than we realize because he has a propensity to sin it is part of our nature it is that earthy if you will that carnal nature that we inherit for at from Adam no one has to teach a young child when the parents say who was in this cookie jar not me no one teaches him to lie no one teaches a child to see something that doesn't belong to him and slip it in his pocket that's why we have to tell them you can't do that take that back put that away don't do what I told you not to do and we have to we have to encourage we have to teach and we have to do those things because why there is just something in human nature that wants to do what it's not supposed to do now I'm not talking just understanding in a sense of a mental capacity because obviously men has man has great mental capacity but an understanding what is true and what is right there is that wisdom that James talked about that is from above but he also said there is an there is a wisdom that is not from above and he said it is this it is earthy it's of the earth it's sensual it's devilish and then he said there is a wisdom from above so earthy wisdom is wisdom that follows the instincts of the flesh it follows that carnal nature Godly wisdom on the other hand follows the leading of the spirit of God
in fact Peter spoke of those in second Peter 2 and 12. he said they are as natural brute beasts kind of what Genesis was saying all right he said there's really no difference between some that that are that are leading people astray and living those carnal lives he said they're like a beast they're made to be taken and destroyed because they speak evil of things they don't understand and they're going to perish because of their sin Jude repeats that same idea in Jude 1 10. he said there are some people that speak evil of things which they don't know about he said but they what they know naturally as brute beast in other words they're following after the whims of their flesh they're doing the things that they want to do in themselves and he said in in doing those things they corrupt themselves man that does not understand the things of God does not have the spirit of God is as the Beast he said with whom they share their origin from the ground
here's what we know it's not in the power of man to live above sin we can't do it on our own and that applies to all of us given the opportunity and if we follow it the flesh will always lead us into sin it is that fleshly in sync extinct now I realize there are sins that you may keep from doing you'll say well I'd never do that and probably you won't everyone doesn't instinctively go out and kill people we know better than that I'm not going to do it everyone does not instinctively go out or decide I'm going to go out and commit for an occasion or adultery do those things but here's what we have to remember this flesh cannot be trusted if it follows after its own desire in fact Paul wrote to those to the church he said in Rome those that serve God and here's what he said put on the Lord Jesus Christ and he said and be careful do not make provision for the flesh to fulfill the lust thereof now he wasn't talking to worldly people out in sin he was talking to the church he said don't make provision because if you give in an opening here's what he's saying it's going to take it if you follow after it if you allow it in fact he said this and you know we're thinking Paul he's the great Apostle and he's missionary and he's preached and wrote a third of the New Testament or more and all these things and he said but I have to keep under my body in other words I have to keep it in control and bring it into subjection because if I'm not careful I'll preach to others and I myself will be lost you see this battle is continuous we will win the battle today and you might have to fight it again tomorrow the important thing is let God work in your life and don't follow after that earthy flesh that was dug out of the ground
perhaps Paul explains it best to us in Ephesians chapter 2 verses one to three he said this and you hath he quickened or you God has made alive who were dead in your trespasses and sins you were dead that's the death that was promised when they ate of the fruit of the tree you dead your soul if you will died to the things of God he said and so because of that in times past you walked according to the course of this world in other words you were no different than everything else in the world according to the prince of the power of the air and the spirit that works in the children of Disobedience and then he said this among whom also we all had our conversation that word conversation doesn't mean just the things you were take speaking it means your way of life and the things that you do he said we all had our lives we lived our lives that way in the lust of the flesh fulfilling the desires of the flesh into the mind in other words just doing what I want to do and he said and because of that you were by Nature by what you were the children of Wrath even as others in effect our soul was dead because of sin
notice he sung said among whom we all no one is exempt so when when we teach this and when we preach that we're not setting ourselves up better or in any way different than anyone else we all have this same struggle and the Bible tells us this that Paul said that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God and then he asked this question who is going to deliver me from the body of this death who's going to save me from what I am and what me what I was born into this brute nature if you will this nature that's much like an animal here's what we understand that things of God understanding them only comes when the spirit is working in our lives
job said this there is a spirit in a man and the inspiration talk about Inspire expire the breath of the almighty gives them understanding it takes it is this understanding that will help us become like him it is the spirit of God working in us that will conform us to His Image if Adam forfeited much of what he was at creation allowing sin to change that Glory of The Incorruptible God that image that was in him into an image made like Paul said it this way made like birds four-footed beasts and creeping things made like everything else that came out of the ground then it is only through the spirit that that image can be restored it's only the Holy Ghost in us that can make us what God wants us to be I think we could say it this way the fall literally knocked the breath out of man you fall hard that's what happens right can't breathe it knocked the breath it knocked the spirit if you will it knocked that image of God out of men
but I don't want to just leave it there that that's where we are because in a passage very familiar to many of you you could probably quote the story or talk about it in Ezekiel the Bible says the hand of the Lord was upon Ezekiel and it carried him out in the spirit of the Lord it set him down in the midst of a valley which was full of Bones and he caused me to pass by them all around them he said and there were very many in this open Valley a lot of Bones there and they were very dry and he said unto me son of man can these bones live can these bones live it's a valley of death it was a valley full of Bones who had people had been dead for a very long time there was no Flesh on them because the bones were very dry so no telling how many years they had been bleached by the sun and it was just out there in a pile isn't that how we are spiritually when we come before come to Jesus I wonder if if God had asked you before you came to Christ can the dry bones of your life come to life how would you have answered him I think the way we have to answer probably is how Ezekiel answered God son of man can they live well Lord you know I think what he was saying is I don't see any way they can do it but God you know I don't maybe that's where you are today God can anything ever change in my life can I really ever live Victorious can I live a life that is pleasing for God and maybe your answer today is Lord I don't know but you do and so here's what God said well then here's what I want you to do prophesy unto these bones speak to them and say oh ye Dry Bones hear the word of the Lord thus saith the Lord God unto the bones behold I'm going to cause breath to enter you and you shall live now you have to wonder if if Ezekiel looked around to see if he was the only one in the valley what's this guy doing he's preaching a bunch of Bones I guess nobody else would listen to him right he did have that problem too he he said prophesy to them he said the Lord says I'm going to put breath into you and you're going to live and I'm going to lay sinews upon you I'm going to bring flesh upon you I'm going to cover you with skin I'm going to put breath in you and you shall live and you'll know that I'm the Lord
so Ezekiel starts at prophesies bones you're going to live the Lord said so he's going to put sinews on he's going to attach the bones back together he's going to put Flesh on him he's going to cover that with skin and he's going to put life in you and immediately the Bones start coming together sinews the tendons and ligaments all come together and the bones are hooked back up and those flesh comes back on these bones and skin covers them up and he watches an amazement but nobody's moving they're all laying there there was no life in them the Bible says there was no breath in them and then God looks at Ezekiel and he said okay here's what I want you to do prophesy to the wind he said so I prophesied as he commanded me and the breath came into them and they lived and stood up on their feet and exceeding great Army
now what was that story for well the Bible tells us what it was for Israel felt like they were dead they had gone as far away from God and they felt like we can never be restored and so the lesson was God can still breathe in you and give you life but here's the lesson for us no matter how dead you may feel no matter how difficult your life may seem no matter how deep in sin you may be the Living God can breathe into your situation and bring new life never think that there is no hope because there is always a hope when the spirit of God moves in your life
in the New Testament Jesus in an obvious attempt to drive the point home and to his disciples the Bible says in John 20 and 22 he breathed on them and said receive ye the Holy Ghost what he was saying is you know what you need the Breath of God in your life you need that Spirit to move back in you you need a soul replacement if you will you need something to come in there and take away that brute Beast Instinct of a sinful man that is living there and become again the living soul that you can do what God wants you to be and you can be the person that God wants you to be I don't think it's a mistake I don't think it's any wonder why on the day of Pentecost what happened the Bible says a sound from Heaven came as a rushing Mighty Wind which filled the house where they're sinning I think God looked on those people and said okay it's time for my spirit to do a work and blue into them and man that had been a living Soul before the Garden of Eden suddenly that Spirit comes back that correction if you will the Breath of God breathed into the nostrils of a creation restoring man in that right fellowship with God that is the solution for sin that is the solution for this carnal nature it's the breath of the spirit why do Pentecostals talk about the Holy Ghost why are you always pushing the idea you got to have the Holy Ghost that's why because without it you're not going to make it without the spirit of God working in your life no longer had did man have to be captive to beastly Earthly carnal instincts no longer did he have to follow after that propensity but he could be free from those instincts to walk after the spirit John said if the son therefore shall make you free free from what free from sins free from your carnal nature free from that thing that you shall be free indeed
if you're bound by sin I'm telling you this morning you can be set free the chains that are bound you can fall away as you allow the spirit to breathe on your life that's why we need to be renewed in the Holy Ghost that's why we need to keep daily even Paul said I die out to sinful man I die out and I let the spirit work in me I let it come to life in my life
he said this to the Corinthians he said and so it is written the first man Adam was made a living Soul the last Adam was a quickening or a life-giving spirit he says this how be it that was not first which is spiritual but that which is natural what he is saying is that's how we are born we are born by Nature the Bible says we are the children of Wrath as is the earth he said such are they that are earthy as in the earthy such are they that are earthy as in the Heavenly such are they that are heavenly in other words until you have that spirit in your life you're out of the ground like everything else but you need God to breathe in you to come alive in him and he said and as we have borne the image of the earthy we shall also bear the image of the heavenly that progression is repeated in every life you're not born heavenly you don't grow up heavenly or earthy born in sin shape and iniquity that kind of thing that's how we're born
but when we are born again when he breathes new life into us the Bible says we walk in newness of Life aren't you thankful for the life that he gives us that Breath of Life that he can breathe into your life he said this therefore If any man be in Christ he is what he is a new creature not an earthy creature not a creature like Adam he said those old things are passed away and All Things become new All Things become new you can leave different today than you came in I mean even if you're filled with the Holy Ghost if it's something's in your life and you're you're feeling that earthy man that's just creeping up you can let God breathe on you today and it will change you the earthy man is a subject to corruption it is Mortal it's suffering subject of suffering sadness death Decay but those of us who have the spirit there is a promise and here's what we know the wages of sin yes it is death but the gift of God him breathing in our life him putting his spirit in US is what eternal life through Jesus Christ Our Lord Jesus said I am come that they might have a life and that they might have it more abundantly
so I think we're given a choice today aren't we you can either continue to live a life of death and of sin or you can let the spirit work in your life and have life more abundantly
in fact Paul writes of a day that is coming he said when this corruptable this this very flesh is going to put on incorruption this Mortal this thing that dies is going to put on immortality and what is going to do that it's the breath of the spirit because if the spirit of him the Bible says that raise up Jesus from the dead dwells in you it's also going to Quicken or make alive your mortal Body by what his spirit that dwells in you so it all comes down to a choice will we continue our life in the control of under the control of the flesh or will you crucify the flesh to rise to walk in a newness of life will you be guided by a carnal nature and an earthy instinct or will you allow the spirit to breathe in you the breath of life will you continue in a life ruled by sin or you're going to begin a life and let the spirit live in US
God asked this question in Ezekiel 33 11. he said as I live saith the Lord first he tells him this he said I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked that doesn't excite God he has no pleasure in that he said but here's what I have pleasure in but that the wicked turned from his way and live that's what I want to see and then he said turn ye turn you from your evil ways and then he asked this question why would you die why would you choose that when I have life and it's your choice you can die and I have no pleasure in that but if you'll turn and live and you turn to me and I will give you eternal life and here's what I like you know God always goes above and beyond what man can do and what man would say not just life but John 10 10 says I come to give you life and that more abundantly so not just life like the cow in the field not just life like the birds overhead but an abundant life in Jesus Christ he said whomsoever the sun sets free shall be free indeed so not just a bit of Freedom he will make you completely free not just Joy but the Bible says he will give you Joy that is unspeakable and it's full of Glory why because of the breath of life that he puts in your life not just peace that he gives and you know sometimes we get peace in this situation whatever but he said I will give you a peace that passes all understanding not just love He Loves Us yes he will give us love but perfect love the Bible says that cast out all fear everything else why because the Breath of God blows in US one of the verses we use when we talk about image also applies in this case but we all with open face beholding it as a glass the glory of the Lord when we look at a mirror what we want to see is the glory of the Lord and he said this we are changed into that same image from glory to glory in other words this life is a progression you haven't made it I haven't made it none of us can say we're perfect and we're all the way there we're striving but he said we are being changed from what I am today to what I'm going to be tomorrow and what I'm going to be the next day and it's a progression from glory to glory and then he said even as by the spirit of the Lord that Breath of Life that he puts in you when he fills you with his spirit will change you little at a time a little more a little more and to make us more like him
why not let the Breath of God work in your life why are we here today it's because we want an encounter with the Holy Ghost right we want his Spirit working in our lives we want to become more like him
let's stand this morning others are getting ready to join us before they do why don't you just lift a hand and say Lord change me blow in me Breathe In Me Lord and let your spirit work in me Lord I pray for everyone that is in the sound of my voice that we would allow the spirit to work in us that we would turn away from dead works the works of the flesh that would allow you to breathe in us that we might become alive in you and to become what you want us to be and we ask it in Jesus name thank you Lord give him a hand clap of Praise before we go any further lift you up today thank you for your touch for your grace hallelujah hallelujah amen
