Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

Psalm 91: The Answer to Psalm 90

  • He announces the lesson, "The Refuge of the Secret Place," and reads Psalm 91:1; the psalm is a psalm of hope about the protection and benefits available to the child of God.
  • The psalm does not name its author; he leans toward Moses, since Psalm 90 just before it is a prayer of Moses the man of God.
  • Psalm 90 was written in the wilderness: the generation that refused to enter the promised land would die there, their days passed away in God's wrath, their years spent "as a tale that is told" — threescore years and ten, or fourscore by strength, in labor and sorrow (Psalms 90:7-10).
  • Even in that despair there are glimpses of hope: Moses opens by remembering that the Lord has been their dwelling place in all generations, and prays to be made glad and for God's work and glory to appear to their children.
  • If Moses wrote Psalm 91, it is the answer to Psalm 90: the generation that followed, if they would put their trust in God, would have his protection.

Scriptures: Psalms 91; Psalms 90; Psalms 90:7-10

Dwelling in the Secret Place (Verse 1)

  • "Dwell" literally means to sit or to stay: constancy. Those who continue in the presence of the Lord weather life's storms far better than those who come in only when it starts to rain and leave when the sun shines.
  • "Dwell" also means to be set on purpose — as a table is set in a particular order, or a foundation is set meticulously because the whole structure depends on it. We are to set ourselves in God's presence and make his presence our dwelling place.
  • Some Christians are content to visit the outer court and stand on the outskirts; the promised blessings are for those who go beyond and live in close fellowship with God.
  • Psalm 31 explains the secret place: God has laid up great goodness for those who fear him, and he hides those who trust in him in the secret of his presence.
  • Isaiah points to the Messiah as that secret hiding place — a man who will be as a hiding place from the wind, a covert from the tempest, and the shadow of a great rock in a weary land — and Paul says in Colossians that our life is hid with Christ in God; Jesus is where we set our lives.

Scriptures: Psalms 31; Isaiah (book-only, as spoken); Colossians (book-only, as spoken)

"I Will Say of the Lord": Refuge and Fortress (Verse 2)

  • Verse 2 is the response to the truth of verse 1: "I will say of the Lord, he is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust." To say it is a commitment to testify, to declare and agree with what God's word says.
  • A refuge is a shelter; a fortress is a stronghold — the same word translated elsewhere as the strong tower: the wise man Solomon said in Proverbs that the name of the Lord is a strong tower we run to and are safe.
  • Psalm 48 gives the picture the Jews would have seen: "Walk about Zion, and go round about her: tell the towers thereof" — not skinny water towers, but great fortresses; the historian Josephus describes Jerusalem's towers as large enough to house a whole garrison of soldiers, a mighty fortress full of mighty men.
  • God is a personal God — my God, my Lord, my Savior, my healer, my strong tower, my deliverer — not a distant God who wound things up and left us to ourselves; because he is a God of great strength whom we can dwell with, we can trust him.

Scriptures: Proverbs (book-only, as spoken); Psalms 48

Delivered from the Snare and the Pestilence (Verses 3-4)

  • Verse 3 promises deliverance from the snare of the fowler — a figure for the peril of one's life, what man or Satan might try to do — and from the noisome pestilence.
  • Snaring a bird is a difficult thing: birds have keen eyesight (a hawk can spot a strand of fishing line stretched over a fish pond from far away and will not come down), yet the devil is crafty, sneaky, and the master of deception; the promise is that God will keep those who set themselves in his presence from the snare.
  • "Noisome" does not mean noisy; it means evil desire, and pestilence is the things that destroy — so he will keep us from the evil desires that destroy us; even saved people must battle the flesh and the carnal nature.
  • James warns us this way: every man is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lusts and enticed; when lust has conceived it becomes sin, and sin finished brings forth death — "do not err, my beloved brethren." But the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation.
  • Verse 4: he covers us with his feathers, and under his wings we trust. Jesus explained the picture in Matthew 23: "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem... how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not" — the shelter was there, but they rejected it.

Scriptures: James (book-only, as spoken); Matthew 23

His Faithfulness Is the Shield: No Fear by Night or Day (Verses 4-8)

  • "His truth shall be thy shield and buckler": truth here means faithfulness, constancy, reliability, and a buckler is that which surrounds — his faithfulness is a shield that surrounds you. He did not say your faithfulness; even when we fail and make mistakes, he is faithful, and he will never leave us or forsake us.
  • Verse 5 is a direct counter to Psalm 90: you do not have to be afraid for the terror by night, the arrow that flies by day, the pestilence that walks in darkness, or the destruction that wastes at noonday — the things the unbelieving generation faced as they died in the wilderness.
  • A thousand will fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come nigh you; with your eyes only you will see it and understand that it is the reward of the wicked who refused to do God's will.

Bookends of Promise: Habitation, Angels, and Victory

  • Verses 9-10 repeat the theme of verses 1-2 and answer it with another promise: because you have made the Lord, even the Most High, your habitation, no evil will befall you and no plague will come near your dwelling. God bookends our response with promises on both sides.
  • In Acts 2, Peter spoke to the inquiring sinners about the Holy Ghost — repent, be baptized, receive the Holy Ghost, "for the promise is unto you, and to your children" — and three thousand souls were added to the church; in 2 Peter, Peter writes that there are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises on the other side as well. You can't lose living for God.
  • The second promise, verses 11-12: he will give his angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways; they will bear you up in their hands lest you dash your foot against a stone. His angels are all around those who follow him, holding us up as we walk.
  • The final promise of this part: you will tread upon the lion and the adder, and trample the young lion and the dragon under your feet. To a people wandering forty years in rough wilderness terrain, never knowing when they might step on a scorpion or meet a snake, that was very real; for us it means every enemy will be placed under our feet.

Scriptures: Acts 2; 2 Peter (book-only, as spoken)

God Answers: Seven Promises (Verses 14-16)

  • In the last three verses the narrative changes: God himself answers, and there are seven promises. The first three are conditional — they respond to the believer's own action.
  • "Because he has set his love upon me, therefore I will deliver him": deliverance here is a way of escape, promised to those who have attached themselves to God — as Israel's followers would escape the plagues and death of those who rejected him, and as those who set their affection on things above will be delivered from the wrath to come.
  • "I will set him on high, because he has known my name": whosoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved — Peter used those exact words in his Pentecost message that Paul used in Romans, and two chapters later Peter added that there is no other name under heaven whereby we must be saved. Call on Jesus and he will lift you up and set your feet on the rock of salvation.
  • "He shall call upon me, and I will answer him" — but we must call: the writer of Hebrews makes it clear that today is the day of salvation, if we will hearken to his voice while his grace is extended. God opens a window of opportunity in every lifetime.
  • The flip side is Proverbs 1: Solomon wrote of those who rejected God — "I called and you refused, I stretched out my hand and no man regarded" — and a day comes when they will call and he will not answer, and seek him and not find him, because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord. Call on him now, while he may be found.
  • The last four promises carry no condition for those dwelling in the secret place: "I will be with him in trouble" — trouble means dire straits, hemmed in and not knowing where to go, yet we may boldly say the Lord is my helper; "I will deliver him and honor him" — sometimes God opens a way of escape, and sometimes he reaches in and draws us out himself; "with long life I will satisfy him" — beyond the promised land, the gift of God is eternal life; "and show him my salvation."

Scriptures: Romans (book-only, as spoken); Hebrews (book-only, as spoken); Proverbs 1

Dwelling in Practice

  • First, find time to get alone with God: Jesus said when you pray, enter your closet, shut the door, and pray to your Father who is in secret — the old chorus says "shut in with God in the secret place."
  • Second, abide in him all the time, not only at church or in the prayer closet: Jesus is with us every moment, a companion we can talk to on the road; when Paul said "pray without ceasing" he meant that constant communion and constant mindset.
  • Third, do not forsake the assembling of ourselves together: to abide in Jesus is to be part of his body — no member of the body is the whole body, and we need one another just as we need him.
  • He closes in prayer: those who come into God's presence and set themselves in that position in him can have confidence that he will keep us, walk beside us, and deliver us, finding in him whatever we have need of — and the capture ends mid-sentence as he announces the break before morning worship.

we're going to look to the word of the lord this morning and this psalm is a psalm of hope that we are going to look to we talked about mentioned last week we're going to look at psalm 91. i'll just read the first verse before we really get into the lesson and then we will be looking verse by verse as we go through this chapter the title of our lesson is that's the refuge of the secret place secret place aren't you thankful for his presence and that secret place we have in him that we just sang about the psalmist said this he that dwelleth in the secret place of the most high shall abide under the shadow of the almighty amen psalm 91 it's it's a wonderful song beautiful psalm that we read we like to look at because it talks about the protection and the benefits that are available to the child of god there are many opinions about who wrote this song who wrote this psalms some feel that david did others think that moses was the probable writer i don't the bible doesn't include that information it's not there at the top of the chapter telling who wrote it uh psalm 90 the first before that chapter before that is a prayer of moses the man of god i guess if i were to give an opinion i would lean toward that idea based on the context of what we read in this psalm that moses was the author the preceding psalm as we mentioned was written by him when we look at psalm 90 and that's not the lesson but i just want to point it out in contrast today moses wrote it most likely while israel was wandering in the wilderness they had refused to enter the promised land and of course god told them well then you will wander around in the wilderness until the generation that refused to do what i asked them to do is all gone and so that entire generation except for mo except for joshua and caleb would pass away they would die in the wilderness with no hope of inheriting the land of their forefathers in fact when you look at psalm 90 particularly verse 7 through 10 moses writes this he said for we are consumed by thine anger and by thy wrath are we troubled you have set our iniquities before thee notice he didn't say you said it before us we knew what we did he said god you're looking at our iniquities our secret sins you've exposed them in the light of your countenance and he said this because of that all of our days are passed away in your wrath we spend our years as a tale that is told we already know the event we know what's going to happen right the days of our years are three score and 10 and if by reason of strength they're four four score years or 80 years it is in their strength yeah is their strength labor and sorrow for it is soon cut off and we fly away not much hope in that he said we're just cinder we're just spending our lives we already know what's going to happen it's a day that is told a tale that is told we're all going to die walking around in this wilderness yet even in the midst of that despair there are some glimpses of hope number one moses opens his prayer with this reminder in psalm 91 lord that you have been our dwelling place in all generations so even though we understand that we're facing your wrath we understand that you have been our dwelling place and in the final verses he holds out a hope for the future he says this he said make us glad according to the days wherein yet you have inflicted us and the years wherein we have seen evil in other words for all the years we've seen even give us that many more good years later on now of course it obviously it wasn't for the people that were dying in the wilderness but for god's people and he said let thy work appear unto thy servants in thy glory unto their children of course the children were the ones that would benefit later and so if moses did in re indeed write psalm 91 it is the answer to psalm 90 the generation that rebelled at the jordan were going to die in the wilderness but if the generation that followed them if their children and grandchildren would put their trust in god they would have his protection and with that in mind moses opens this psalm much as he did the previous by reminding them that god was their dwelling place he that dwelleth in the secret place of the most high they will abide under the shadow of the almighty there are two words that jump out to me immediately when i read that and those are the words dwelleth and abide that first word dwell literally means to sit or to stay so sit down and say i'm not going anywhere right it speaks of constancy and those who continue in the presence of the lord will weather life storms much better than those that come in whenever starts to rain a little bit and then leave when the sun starts shining in their lives and we all know people and we maybe we've even been there in in our lives but there are blessings here promised not not for everyone but for those who live in that close fellowship with god who those who make god's presence their dwelling place many christians might visit if you will the outer court of the sanctuary the temple the way it was set up there was a court of the people the general common just about anybody could go in there and you could go to that part but there was something about going beyond there and getting into the holy place and getting to where the presence of the of the lord would work and some people are content to just kind of stand around the outskirts and say well i went to the house of the lord while others get in and enjoy the presence of god and that is where we want to be today those that dwell those that stay there another meaning of that word dwell not only to sit but literally to be set to be set and when you set something in place you purposely place it where you desire it to be when you set a table you don't just throw all the plates in a stack in the middle and say i'll have one when you set it you say this plate goes here and this one goes here and this fork goes here and this spoon here and this one over here and this knife goes and you set it in a particular way or in a particular order it is done in other words with purpose with a reason when a house is being built the foundation must be set very meticulously it must be aligned correctly because the whole structure is going to depend on how that that foundation is set and so what i think what he's saying there is set yourselves in god's presence be purposeful in your walk with god make decisions in your life that i am going to set or i'm going to abide or i'm going to take up residence in the presence of the lord and god becomes our dwelling place god becomes the place that our lives are set where we place ourselves more specifically the presence of god becomes our dwelling place he talks about he that dwelleth or he that has set himself or he that sits in the secret place of the most high that what secret place is he talking about that psalm 31 helps us understand what that is meant by he said oh how great is thy goodness which thou has laid up for them that fear thee which thou has wrought for them that trust in me thou shalt hide them wherein the secret of thy presence so understand that secret place is where god is it's god's presence it's where god dwells even more specifically isaiah prophetically points to the messiah as a secret or a hiding place for the child of god he said behold a king is going to reign in righteousness a prince and princes shall rule in judgment and a man shall be as a hiding place from the wind and a covert or a shelter from the tempest as rivers of water in a dry place and is the shadow of a great rock in a weary land so jesus is our hiding place he is the place that we want to set our lives he is where we want to build that relationship with god in fact paul said in colossians he said you are dead talking about the carnal man or your carnal life he said and your life is hid with christ in god so that is where we want to find ourselves right to be found in him paul says in another place that is the hiding place this first verse of this psalm states an eternal truth he talks about being hid in god and then he talks about dwells in this under the shadow of the almighty under the shadow of the almighty of course the verse we just read talking about jesus it talked about the shadow of a great rock in a weary land we just sang about in his presence and i felt the presence of the lord in this house and i'm sure you did too as he began to worship him isn't that just like coming under a shadow when the sun is beating down and a cloud comes over and you feel that cool breeze or you able to find a place of shade and that is the picture that is being drawn here and is being talked about so this first verse states an eternal truth it's just a matter of it's a statement of fact it's just he that dwells in the secret place you will dwell you will abide you will live if you will under the shadow of the almighty you will live in god's presence when you set yourself to dwell there the first verse states that truth and the next verse the author if it is moses or whoever gives the response he said this

i will say of the lord god he is my refuge he is my fortress he is my god in him will i trust so knowing the promises that those who set themselves in god are assured of his protection the psalmist said well then that's what i want to do i will i hope when we read a scripture like that that if you dwell in that secret place that you can abide under his shadow and under his protection i hope there's something in your spirit that says well then i will that's what i want to do i want to be there i want to be where the presence of god is and so he said i will say of the lord the first phrase i think is is a commitment to to testify i will say of the lord i will declare what i know to be true i will agree what his word has to say i will stand on the promise that he is my refuge and that he is my fortress i think some people in here probably have that i will in their spirit amen you're here and you're here many times day in day out our service end and server why because you have set yourselves knowing that hey i will get in the presence of the lord and when we stand on that promise the promise he said is he is my refuge and he is my fortress refuge here literally is a shelter while fortress means a stronghold and it this that word stronghold is the same word that is translated elsewhere he is the strong tower he is that place that we run to the wise man solomon and proverb said the name of the lord is a strong tower it is that stronghold that we run to and that we are safe to the jews i think that really had special meaning i mean we've got a few towers if you will in st louis you can go to tower grove park and see a water tower you can go to north city up and and there's some water towers just right north of downtown and you can see them a few different places and we think of a tower yeah there's a tower well that's not what the jews would think the towers they saw were very large towers in fact the sama said this in in psalm 48 he said great is the lord he's greatly to be praised in the city of our god in the mountain of his holiness talking about jerusalem he said it's beautiful for situation it's the joy of the whole earth and then he says this walk about zion and go about her and tell the towers they're up speak of these great towers not water towers not skinny little things going up he said but these towers he said mark you well her bulwarks or her places of strength and so the towers that they would in picture in their mind when they heard that were great fortresses if you will in fact in jesus the the tower jesus day the towers represented military might jewish historian josephus describes those towers about jerusalem he talks about each one of them and they they were named different things and the towers in jerusalem were literally large enough to take a whole garrison of roman soldiers to live inside of that tower so they were great big in fact one was attached close to the temple ground that housed that whole garrison of soldiers and and that's the image they thought of they weren't thinking of just some little water tower somewhere they're saying here's a mighty fortress that's full of of mighty men and that's what they thought of when they said the name of the lord is a strong tower there's strength there's security there's something here that i can turn to and that's what you really need to get a hold of when you say god is my refuge and he is my fortress i don't have to worry about anything else because i've got a mighty army right here when i dwell in the presence of god and he said i will save the lord he is my refuge he is my fortress and then he said he is my god aren't you thankful to know he is a personal god no what a privilege to know that god is not far distant from us he's not some god way out there that just you know kind of wound it all up and said you all take care of yourself but he's my god he's my lord he's my savior my healer my strong tower my deliverer amen why god and he is a personal god and then he said because of that he said in him will i trust what great confidence can come when we realize that he is a god of great strength and that we can dwell in his presence amen he is the god we trust in the next six verses hearken back to what we saw in psalm chapter 90. while psalm 90 was the psalm of despair and we talked about that desperate prayer these instead are kind of the the counterpoint to that they are full of promises to those who abide in the secret place he says in verse 3 surely he will deliver thee from the snare of the fowler and from the noisome pestilence he shall cover thee with his feathers under his wings thou shalt trust his truth shall be thy shield and buckler

thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night the same things he was talking about in the previous chapter don't worry about the arrow that flyeth by day nor the pestilence that walketh in darkness nor for the destruction that wastes at noonday he said a thousand will fall at your side and ten thousand at their right hand but it's not going to come near to you only your eyes are gonna see it and understand it is the reward of the wicked so first he promised deliverance from the snare of the fowler what is meant there literally is death he's talking about he who has the power of death and the snare of the fowler is a figure of for the peril of one's life don't be afraid in other words of what man can do to you and don't be afraid of what satan might try to do to you i think that it's a very interesting phrase there that snare of the fowler to snare a foul to snare a bird is a very difficult thing to do it's not easy they have an eyesight that can see way beyond you know in other words it's not like wiley coyote you know where you just throw out some bird seed and put a box over it and you know hope the bird runs and then you pull the pull the string birds they got this keen eyesight we got this little pond in our front yard and i got some fish in it they keep disappearing and i talking to a guy i said well that's because the hawks like to eat them so how do you keep a hawk out of your little fish pond he said take a fishing line and just put a couple little strips across this way a couple that way and you won't have to worry about it how's a fish land going to keep him out he said those birds can see a length 100 yards if they could read they could read a newspaper 100 yards away he said they will see that little fishing line that you hardly notice going across and they won't go down in that water it's hard to catch a bird it's hard to snare one so what it in other words you know the devil is he's crafty and he's sneaky and he'll do things that you don't even realize before you know it's like whoa how did i end up here if you're not careful because he he is the master of deception but the bible promises i will keep you from the snare of the fowler i'm thinking you don't have to worry about the devil you just have to set yourself in the presence of the lord you have to just make sure that you're living where you must where you need to be he will also deliver us he said from the noisome pestilence i had to re read up on that i wasn't really sure noise them i figured that was noisy pestilence noisy insects maybe like the locust or something you know you hear that swarm and think noise and noise it doesn't mean that at all the word noisem literally means an evil desire and pestilence refers to the things that destroy and so when you combine that he said he will keep you from the evil desires that will destroy you who those that place themselves in the presence of god you see even though we are saved we still have to battle this flesh right we have to battle this carnal nature we have to be careful of that so we must always be on guard against evil desires we must always james warns us this way he said every man is tempted when you're drawn away what by your own lust you're not tempted because of situations around us what happens is the devil understands what our own evil desires might lurk in our carnal nature and he puts those opportunities in front of us and that's why it said you're drawn away by your own lust and you are enticed so if you're not careful and if we're not carefully in the presence of god it is easy to get drawn away and then when that lust or that evil desire has conceived in other words when we act on it then it becomes sin and when sin is finished it brings forth what death or destruction evil desires that bring destruction and james warning is this do not air my beloved brethren don't get caught up in that well i'm thankful we don't have to err because of that evil desire that leads to destruction because we can set ourselves in the presence of god the bible says this the lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation he knows how to keep you from the snare he knows how to keep you from that noisome pestilence and he said this and we mentioned it a little bit ago but he shall cover thee with feathers and under his wings shalt thou trust he will protect you under that shadow of the almighty but not only that but he will protect you with his feathers if you will there are several scriptures that speak of the lord covering his people with feathers obviously that's a metaphorical description god's not flying around like a big bird and got wings and doing this he's a spirit has no form that we can see obviously a metaphor but jesus explained it probably better than anyone imagine that in matthew 23 he said oh jerusalem jerusalem that kill us the prophet and you stone them which are sent to thee how oft he said would i have gathered thy children together even as the hen gathers her chickens under her wings and you would not in other words i was there to shelter you i was there to wrap my wings i was there to protect you i was there to be that shelter that you needed that you needed from me but you rejected me i'm thankful since then multitudes have accepted that invitation to come under the protection of his wings aren't you thankful they are there because it's there and only there that we can trust it is only there where we are safe to be outside of that protection will only lead us to destruction but to be under the shadow of his wings and under the covering of his wings

he will protect us and he said and under his wings thou shalt trust thankfully you can trust god you can trust god when you stay under those wings you can trust that everything is going to be all right he said his truth shall be thy shield and thy buckler the word truth there is a the word that means faithfulness or constancy or reliability truth the truth things that are real things that are stable is what it is referring to and that word buckler refers to that which surrounds so you could say it this way his faithfulness is a shield that will surround you notice he didn't say it was your faithfulness it said it was his faithfulness said his truth is going to be the shield and thy buckler we're not always truthful are we in other words faithful we're striving to be that we're trying but here's what i do know even when i fail he's faithful even when i make a mistake he's faithful he's still there and so he said my faithfulness is going to be around you my faithfulness is going to be the shield that is around you and if god is faithful what do you have to be concerned about he's going to take care of you in every situation he is going to be there i don't know what i'm going to do trust the faithfulness of god i don't know where i'm going to turn trust in his faithfulness he said i will never lead you or forsake you he will take care of you then he went on to say thou in verse 5 thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night the arrow that flies by day the pestilence that walks in darkness the destruction that wastes at noonday as we said this is a direct counter to chapter 90 where he said we're going to face these things and we're going to die and our life is like a tale that is already told and here's what we're going to face until we're all gone and pass from this life but then he turns to the next generation said you don't have to be afraid of that don't worry about the tares by now don't worry about the arrows by the way don't worry about the pestilence don't worry about the destruction while the unbelieving we're dying in the wilderness moses reminds the next generation don't be afraid those who refused the promised land they would face the tares of the night and the arrows and the pestilence and destruction but those godly that did not that were following him did not have to fear those things in fact he said it this way you're going to see a thousand fall by your side and ten thousand at your right hand now he's not talking about you're gonna have great victory and you're gonna go out and win a battle here and there not in this verse he's saying you're gonna see a thousand people die over here and you're gonna see 10 000 of them die over there because they didn't follow my command they didn't listen to my voice and so they're just gonna you're gonna see it all around you but then he gives this promise but it's not gonna come nigh to you don't worry about it it may look discouraging when you see what what's going on around you don't worry about it will not come nigh he said only with your eyes you'll see it just understand that's the reward of the wicked that refused to do my will you will see the unbelieving generation perish but it's not going to affect you the next four verses contain three sets of promises for those abiding in god's presence i love the way this is written verses 9 and 10 the theme from the verses one and two is is kind of repeated verse one was a promise you dwell in the secret place of the most high and you shall abide under the shadow of the almighty of course we saw in verse two that was a response well in that case i'm gonna say the lord he's my refuge he's my god i'm going to trust in him verse 9 says it this way because you have made the lord which is my refuge even the most high thine habitation because you've done that because you've chosen to dwell in that secret place because you are responding to the promise that i've given you know what god does he turns around and gives them another promise in in the remainder of that verse he said because you have made the lord even the habitation verse 10 he said because of that no evil is going to befall you there shall be no plague come nigh thy dwelling so he gives them another promise i pictured in my mind that it's almost like this like god bookends our response with promises there's a promise on this side and because i choose to follow after and and take that promise and live in it he says then i'll just put another promise on this side and he just bookends it if you will they're on both sides the psalmist responded and god promised again in acts chapter 2 paul peter spoke to the inquiring sinners about the holy ghost he began to talk to them they said what shall we do he said well you know repent be baptized receive the holy ghost and he said this for the promise is unto you and your children all that are afar off even as many as the lord our god shall call so he pointed to you have a promise now what was that promise the promise of the holy ghost because of that three thousand souls were out of the church that day and in second peter peter writes to the church and he says this whereby because you are saved there are given into us exceeding great and precious promises so there was a promise on the front end they obeyed they received the spirit and now there's promise on the other side you know you can't lose living for god he said you know what i promise if you turn to me everything's going to be all right and then you start living for god he said guess what i got some promises for you aren't you thankful for the bookends of promise that he gives around our response now what was the promise he gave to them he said this

there shall no evil befall thee neither shall any plague come nigh unto thy dwelling they're again hearkening back to what they were seeing around them and everything else don't worry about it it's not going to affect you what protections are afforded this child of god the second promise in verses 11 and 12 he said for he shall give his angels charge over thee they will keep you in your ways they will bear thee up in thy hands lest thy dash thy foot against a stone what a comfort to know brother gary swift used to sing it i can feel the angels over me they're walking by my side why because the bible says he's just going to give his angels charge well i don't know about this situation i got don't worry about it he's got angels they're all around you they're going to hold you up in fact it's kind of an interesting image here he gives he said they will hold you in your hand unless you stub your toe unless you hit your foot against the stone they're there you know you don't have to worry we talk about the steps of the righteous man being ordered of the lord so when we're walking for him and sometimes we talk about the word being a light into my path you know just that don't worry you're not gonna have to worry about where you step if you're misstepping as long as you're following god because his angels will hold you so you won't hurt yourself and then the final promise in this that part of it is this thou shalt tread upon the lion and the adder and the young lion and the dragon and shout out trample under thy feet now that's that doesn't make a whole lot of sense but to those wandering 40 years in the wilderness those words had a very real implications might step on a scorpion might run across a lion you might run into those kind of things i mean they were there the adder the snake you never knew what you were going to encounter walking through that rough terrain and through that wilderness and he said to those that are following me because you've made me your habitation your refuge he said don't worry about that you'll walk on them you'll trample it under your feet and you'll just keep on going to us it lets us know that every enemy will be placed under our feet we don't have to fear what man or what the devil plans for us because in the end god's people will be victorious aren't you thankful the promises to those that choose to dwell under the shadow of the almighty the last three verses are interesting if you look at that he has talked here he said i will say the lord and then he talks about he's going to deliver you and he's going to do this and he's going to do that he goes through when you get to verse 14 the narrative changes because god answers and says

because he has set his love upon me because you've done that therefore i will deliver him so the almighty god himself begins to answer and in these last three verses there are seven promises that gods make the first makes to him the first three are conditional they are in response to the action of the believer he said because he set his love upon me god said therefore i will deliver you so you have a promise but it's conditional set your love upon him and if you do that he will deliver he will deliver those that phrase implies those who have who long for who have attached themselves to god to those people they will our promise delivered that word here translated deliverance literally means he will cause to escape in the context of israel wandering in the desert god was promising that those who followed after him they would escape the plagues and they would escape the death of those who had rejected him for us the bible says this set your affection on things above right not on things of this earth and then wait for his son from heaven even jesus which delivers us from the wrath to come there will be a way of escape if you set your affection where it needs to be set your love upon him and he will deliver you yes out of the situations you face but ultimately he's going to deliver us out of this world amen we have that promise he said this i will set him on high who because he hath known my name so another condition here if you know his name and trusting in his name he will promise and lift up or exalt those who know his name he will exalt them the bible tells us with salvation because whosoever shall call on the name of the lord shall be what shall be saved i mean aren't you thankful for the name of the lord aren't you thankful for the name of jesus peter used those exact same words on his message in the day of pentecost that paul used in romans whosoever will call on the name of the lord shall be saved and then two chapters later peter says this neither is there salvation in any other there is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved call on jesus call on his name he said and i will set you on high call on jesus today church and he will lift you up from your sin he will lift you up and set your feet on a rock of salvation he said this he shall call upon me and here's the third conditional promise if you call he will answer he's not going to answer if you don't call so he said call and i will hear and i will answer you now here's the thing we have to understand there is a time and there is a season to call on the lord writer of hebrews makes it clear you know when that time is today today is a day of salvation if you will call upon him today if you will hearken unto his voice while his grace in other words is extended to us we must call upon him i believe god opens a window of opportunity in every lifetime there is a time he pleads through with hearts through his written word and he pleads through the words of his people and he pleads through situations are in and he places us in situations and things to encourage us to seek after him and he's just waiting for you to just say jesus i need you to call out to him and you know what if you call he will answer he gives opportunity to call and he promises when you call i will answer the flip side of that is this there will come a day when god will no longer answer the writer of hebrew the writer of proverbs solomon he wrote in the very first chapter about those who rejected god and he said because you did that because i called you refused he said i stretched out my hand in other words i was reaching to you and no man regarded you ignored it you said it not my counsel you would none of my reproof he said because of that one of these days i will laugh at the trouble you're in at your calamity i will mock when your fear cometh when it comes as desolation your destruction is a whirlwind when distress comes upon you then shall they call upon me don't wait till your life is just destroyed and it looks like everything is over to say you know what maybe i should call on god do it now in fact he said i they shall call then they shall call but i will not answer they will seek me early and they will not find me for that they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the lord i think what he's saying is call on him now call out to him now don't wait if you're in a situation or if you don't know god don't wait call upon the lord while he may be found now those three promises were conditioned upon our actions love me seek me and i will deliver you know my name and i will exalt you call on me and i will answer he gives four more promises to those that have made their dwelling and there is no condition here he's just talking about those who are dwelling in in that secret place i will be with you in trouble that word trouble means straights or to be hemmed in you know we call it dire straits that means you don't know where to go i'm in a bad place i'm in a situation i don't know how to get out of that's what that word trouble means but god promises you know what i won't leave you i will not say forsake you and then he went on to say for that we may boldly say the lord is my helper i'm thankful when you're in what it seems like straights that you don't know how to get up you can boldly say god you're my helper and i don't have to worry about it he went on to say i will deliver him and honor him now we already saw that promise just a minute ago right because he set his love upon me i will deliver him and he said he will make a way of escape this word is a different word in the hebrew it doesn't mean i will make a way of escape it means i will draw you out you see sometimes god just makes a way and he opens a door so you can get through it and sometimes he just has to reach down say i'll just take you out of that situation i don't know how god is going to deliver you today i don't know if you're going to have to go through it and there's a way out and you'll figure it out and you'll get through it just hold on to god or if he's just going to say you know what enough's enough and take you out i don't know the answer to that but here's what i do know keep believing because he will deliver you the promise is he will deliver you and then he said with long life i will satisfy him now no doubt to those israelites that were wandering in the wilderness that made sense they might see that thousand fall but their side and ten thousand at their right hand and at the right hand as the rebellious died in the desert yet here was a promise of long life it's not gonna come near to you with long life i am gonna satisfy you because when this is all over you're going into the promised land right you know what he gives us kind of the same promise on a much grander scale the wages of sin is death right that happens to those that choose sin but the gift of god is eternal life through jesus christ now that's long life with long life he's he's going to give you a long life it's going to last forever if you follow him and then he said and i will show him my salvation to see the salvation of god this psalm began with the statement he that dwells in the secret place of the most high will abide under that shadow we've talked about what it means to dwell or to be set and to abide how do we turn that into something practical

first how do you dwell there you must find time to get alone with god jesus reminded us when you pray enter your closet and when you shut the door pray to your father which is in secret the old chorus says shut in with god in the secret place there in the spirit be holding his face gaining new power to walk in this race how i long to be loved to be shut in with god every child of god you must find time and a place to get into his presence if you're going to dwell if you're going to set yourself in his presence second if we abide in him then that means we're with him all the time not just when you come in here not just when you're in your closet there needs to be a realization that jesus is with me every moment and i can talk to him like a companion walking down the road you know we should never be in a place where he is far from our thoughts but we need to be in a place where every step of this journey we're sharing it with him i think most of you many of you that have walked with god can understand that when paul encouraged us to pray without ceasing he didn't mean spend every every waking moment in your prayer closet you know you can be driving down the road lord you're good lord keep me from this somebody driving a little erratic lord keep keep your hands on me it's just that constant communion constantly speaking to him that constant mindset that's dwelling that is stain that is abiding there and then finally we must not forsake the assembling of ourselves together hit on that last week we're probably going to hit on a lot to abide in jesus is to be a part of his body debart part of his church we need one another just as we need him bible makes it clear no member of the body is the whole body the eye can't say i'm the body the foot can't say i'm the body no you're not you're a piece of it you're a part of it and we can't exist without the body of christ cannot exist without each other we need one another so do those three things find those times of prayer walk with god daily in every situation that you're in everywhere you are and come together with his people and if we do these things the promises of this psalm will be ours amen

let's stand why don't you just lift a hand and thank him for the promise that he has made lord i'm so thankful to know hallelujah that when we come into your presence and when we set ourselves in that position in you we have a confidence that you're going to keep us that you're going to be with us that you're going to walk beside us that you're going to deliver us whatever we have need of we will find it in you and we give you the praise we give you the glory help us lord to do these things to make sure that we are set in that presence where you want us to be in jesus name thank you savior thank you savior amen well it's good to be in the house of the lord with fellow believers amen why don't you agree to a few of those others will be joining us and we're going to take a break here before morning we're
