Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

Receiving the Word the Right Way

  • The lesson closes a month on the importance of God's word and recaps eight months of the Bible Class 2.0 series, including lessons from the Psalms, church history, and the plan of salvation
  • King Josiah shows the right way to receive the word: when the law was found, he repented, turned from wicked ways, tore down the idols, and reinstated the worship of Jehovah
  • Josiah's son Jehoiakim shows the wrong way: he cut up the scroll with a pen knife and threw it in the fire because he did not want to hear it
  • A coworker who read the Bible once and came away only excited about murders and wars had completely missed the point of the book
  • Paul told Timothy what scripture is for: it is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, then reproof, then correction, then instruction in righteousness — teaching that convicts, corrects, and finally instructs how to live right
  • The class is urged to be reading the word daily, whether through the BREAD program or the chronological reading plan sent to the email list

Scriptures: 2 Timothy (book-only, as spoken)

The Texts: They Testify of Me

  • On the Emmaus road, the risen Jesus walked with two disciples who did not recognize him as they rehearsed his crucifixion and the empty tomb
  • Jesus called them slow of heart to believe all that the prophets had spoken: the Christ had to suffer these things and enter into his glory
  • Beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself
  • Before the gathered disciples Jesus said everything written in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the Psalms concerning him had to be fulfilled, and he opened their understanding so they could understand the scriptures
  • To the Pharisees Jesus said, search the scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life — and they are they which testify of me; that verse gives the lesson its title

Scriptures: Luke 24; John 5

Apostles and Prophets, Christ the Chief Cornerstone

  • The church is built on a sure foundation: the apostles and the prophets, with Jesus Christ himself as the chief cornerstone
  • The apostles' doctrine looks back at Jesus and the prophets looked forward to him, which puts Jesus right in the middle as the focal point of both testaments
  • The New Testament is full of Old Testament quotations — you cannot fully understand either testament without the other
  • God revealed himself gradually in the Old Testament — in creation, through the law, through history, and through the voice of the prophets — but in these last days he has spoken by his Son
  • No man has seen God at any time, but the Son has declared him: Jesus is the complete and perfect revelation of God to man
  • What the Old Testament could show only in types and shadows — the law was a shadow of good things to come, not the very image — Jesus fulfills in full reality

Scriptures: Ephesians (book-only, as spoken); Hebrews 1:1-2; John 1:18; Hebrews 10

Matthew's Lens: Finding Jesus in the Prophets

  • The New Testament writers did not read the Old Testament to figure out who Jesus was; they saw Jesus first, then looked back to find what the scriptures said about him — Jesus became the lens through which they viewed scripture
  • In Jesus' day the word 'scriptures' always meant the Old Testament; the Old Testament did not interpret Jesus — Jesus interprets the Old Testament
  • Matthew introduces Jesus' birth with Isaiah's sign: a virgin shall conceive and bear a son called Emmanuel, God with us
  • In its own setting Isaiah spoke that sign to King Ahaz about events he would see, yet prophecy is often fulfilled again in a greater and more complete way, and Matthew saw the fuller fulfillment in Jesus' virgin birth
  • When Joseph took the child into Egypt and brought him out again, Matthew heard Hosea's words — out of Egypt have I called my son — spoken first of Israel's exodus, now foreshadowing Jesus
  • Jesus himself used the same lens: the only sign given to an unbelieving generation was the sign of Jonah, three days and nights in the heart of the earth, pointing to his own burial and resurrection

Scriptures: Matthew 1:22-23; Isaiah 7:14; Isaiah 7; Matthew 2:14-15; Hosea 11:1; Matthew 16:4

Hebrews: The Shadow and the True Tabernacle

  • The writer of Hebrews reads the whole Old Testament — priesthoods, sacrifices, Melchizedek — through what he saw in Jesus
  • Jesus is our high priest, minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord pitched, not man
  • The earthly priests and the tabernacle Moses built served as the example and shadow of heavenly things, which is why Moses was told to make everything exactly according to the pattern shown in the mount
  • The tabernacle in heaven is the real one, and the sacrifice that covers sin is the sacrifice of Jesus — everything in the Old Testament was pointing toward him

Scriptures: Hebrews 8

Peter: The Prophets Ministered to Us

  • Peter says the prophets inquired and searched diligently about this salvation, and the Spirit of Christ in them testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glory that should follow
  • The prophets could not put it together — the suffering and the glory did not seem to fit — and it was revealed that they ministered not to themselves but to us; only looking through Jesus can we understand what they wrote
  • The sacrifices of the old covenant did not redeem anyone; we are redeemed with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot
  • Peter quotes Isaiah: behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, elect and precious, and he that believes on him shall not be confounded — once he saw Jesus, he knew who the cornerstone was

Scriptures: 1 Peter 1:10-12; Isaiah (book-only, as spoken); 1 Peter 1:18-19; 1 Peter 2:6; Isaiah 28:16

Paul: The Veil Taken Away in Christ

  • When Moses came down from the mountain his face shone with God's glory, so he wore a veil before the people and removed it only when he went in to talk with God
  • Paul says a veil remains on the reading of the Old Testament for those who read it without Christ — their minds are blinded and they miss the glory of God revealed in Jesus
  • That veil is done away in Christ: when the heart turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away, and looking at the Old Testament you see Jesus
  • Jesus' own way of reading was the same — on the road and before the disciples he walked them through Moses, the prophets, and the Psalms and showed them himself

Scriptures: 2 Corinthians 3

A Slow Walk Through Genesis

  • The fall quarter opens a new series, Bible Themes from Genesis: thirteen lessons walking slowly through the first chapters of Genesis, starting with chapters 1 through 3 over the next three months
  • The aim is not mainly what was created on which day, but the great themes, doctrines, and motifs of Genesis — you can find nearly every major doctrine pointing forward from this book
  • The challenge for each week: read Genesis 1–3 slowly, look for the doctrines and teachings, look for Jesus in everything, and ask how it applies to your life
  • Findings the teacher may have missed are welcomed by email so the class can learn together
  • The lesson closes in thanksgiving: the word is not a confusing book, because it is all about him

you can be seated and thank you for your faithfulness to the house of god faithfulness to our bible class this morning amen good to have everyone here good to have some guests with us we're so glad you joined us happy stock pentecostal church today amen and we just welcome you to feast on the word of god enjoy his presence amen and let it touch your life if you're joining online we're glad that you are able to tune in amen and listen this morning we've now completed eight months of our reboot of bible class i called it bible class 2.0 back in january and we've looked at several different topics throughout this year so far we looked at some of them from the psalms and we actually put the psalm with the history to see why they were written and the things that were going on as they wrote those psalms we looked at some other lessons from history we looked at the great plan of salvation we talked about repentance and baptism and talked about the day of pentecost and the holy ghost being poured out and the things on that lesson we looked at some of the great themes that are woven through the bible looked at some of those and this month we've

discussed the importance of the word of god we've looked at that in a couple of different ways we saw the right way to receive the word of god when we looked at king josiah how when they found the law and they found it that he repented and that he turned from the wicked ways and they tore down the idols and and they reinstated worship of jehovah and then we looked at a wrong approach who was that of his josiah's son jehoiakim where when he heard the word of god he took a pen knife and cut it up and threw it in the fire and said i don't want to hear this and so it helps us to understand there is a right way and a wrong way to receive the word of god last week brother buddy long was gracious not to fill in for me while my wife and i celebrated 37 years anniversary and so thank you for that i'm clapping amen and he taught about how the word will impact our hearts and how it touches our lives and so as i look toward the fall quarter uh look through september october november maybe even into december we'll see how that works out but i strongly felt to take the lessons in a little bit different direction and talked it over with pastor through

some emails and i put together a plan for the next 13 lessons whether that takes three months or i plan to go through all of them so we may go into december we'll see if that works but the lesson today is going to serve both as a wrap up for this month the importance of god's word that we've been to studying and also an introduction to a new series that we will be getting into not next week because it's youth week if the youth were in here they'd be clapping right and then but an introduction to a new series that i am entitled bible themes from genesis i know some of you ask me if we have the quarterlys or the books that we had before and that we used before the pandemic and bef when during that time word of flame completely redid all their curriculum their literature and the literature from there that we've been using does not have that same type of uh they have some workbooks i think that are available and some different things it's kind of written for small group sessions so for the fall quarter we also will not be using their curriculum so there will be no book available but you do have the book because it's right here okay you've

got one of these you've got the book and what we're going to do is take a a slow walk through the first few chapters of genesis i would encourage you to read them through in the coming weeks and a couple of weeks ago if you're on our email list i did send everyone an email with a plan bible plan for reading the bible chronologically if you got that you can print it off and check those and if you're not already reading through the bread program i had an idea this starts september this next week and that's back to school time right i know most of you haven't been in school in a couple years anyway and uh you know school is when you have to start studying so if you're not already reading the bread program why don't you get print that thing off and start reading through the word of god you know i don't think it really matters when we do it just so we do it right okay so for our lesson today i'm going to begin with a rather lengthy series of text and as we've emphasized this month the word of god is vitally important to us but here's the thing if if it's not read with a proper understanding or look at it correctly it could be of little value

i was working with a guy and he always had a book in his hand he was always reading every break time every lunch time and so we were just talking one day i said you're always reading something and of course i had a bible at work that i would read occasionally and he said yeah he said i said do you ever read the bible he said yeah i read that once i said you did he said yeah it's a great book he said there's murders in there and wars and killings that's what you got out of reading the bible i think you completely missed the point paul reminded timothy this he said all scripture is given to makes excited to read about all the gore that no not that he said it's given by inspiration of god and it's profitable for doctrine for reproof for correction and for instruction in righteousness and i see i see a real progression there first doctrine which is simply teaching it's profitable to teach and that teaching will reprove us if we're not lining up with the word of god right it convicts us if you will and then it corrects those things that we're doing wrong and then it instructs us how to live right so that's what the word of god is for not

to just say well i read it and it's a cool book so this lesson what i want to try to do today is help us understand how we are to approach scripture not all scripture but particularly the old testament since we'll be looking into genesis so let's read i want to start reading in luke chapter 24 and you can follow along on the screen or in your bibles if you have it as i said i'm going to read a fair portion of this beginning at verse 13. and behold two of them went that same day now that day is the day of jesus resurrection same day they found out that the tomb was empty and they were walking that same day to a village called emmaus which from jerusalem was about three score furlongs and they talked together of all these things that had happened and it came to pass that while they communed together and and reasoned and so they're talking and discussing that that jesus himself drew near and went with them but their eyes were holding that they should not know him so he's walking along right beside him they're talking about him and he said what manner of communications are these that you have one to another what kind of talk is this what

are you doing here as you walk and you're sad and and one of them whose name was cleopas answered him and said well are you a stranger in jerusalem and have you not known the things which have come to pass there in these days and jesus said to them well what things what are you talking about and they said unto him well concerning jesus of nazareth which was a prophet he was mighty indeed and in word before god and all the people and and have you not known how the chief priest and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death and they crucified him but we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed israel and besides all this today is the third day since all that happened yay and certain also women of our company made us astonish which were early at the sepulcher and when they found not his body they came in saying that they had also seen a vision of angels which said he was alive and certain of them which were with us went to the sepulcher and found it even so as the woman had said but him they saw not so we don't understand all this that's going on he's gone jesus is gone we saw him crucified and now he is gone and so

jesus said unto them o fools and slow of heart to believe to believe what all that the prophets have spoken ought not christ who have suffered these things and to enter into his glory and so beginning at moses and all the prophets he expounded it to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself jump down a few verses to verse 44. now that's the same chapter a little bit different setting here is shortly before jesus ascends into heaven and he's talking to all his disciples that are gathered there and he said unto them these are the words which i spake unto you in other words i've already told you this while i was yet with you that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the law of moses and in the prophets and in the psalms concerning me so everything you see in this old testament book it was written about me then he opened their understanding that they might understand the scriptures and he said to them thus it is written and thus it behooved christ to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance the remissions to sin should be preached in his name among all nations beginning at jerusalem

one more verse from john chapter five jesus talking to the pharisees says this search the scriptures for in them ye think ye have eternal life and they are they which testify of me and it's from that last verse that i want to take the title of today's lesson and it is this they testify of me they testify of me god's church is built on a sure foundation amen it's not going anywhere it's on a sure foundation and paul tells us this in ephesians it is the foundation of the apostles and the prophets and jesus christ himself being the cho chief cornerstone so he mentions three things there one is we are founded on the apostles or we are founded on the apostles doctrine that's why we are apostolic pentecostal church we believe in what the apostles taught the doctrines that they that they gave we are founded on those doctrines and so that is on one side if you will so here you have the apostles doctrine and we are founded on that but then he goes on and he say and we are founded on the prophets now the prophets there aren't necessarily talking about they're probably not talking about new testament he's talking about we are founded on the old

testament prophets that looked toward the things of god that laid the foundation if you will helped lay the foundation of what the new testament was going to do so what we have is the apostles doctrine which looked back at jesus and we looked at the prophets that were looking forward to jesus and where does that put jesus it puts him right in the middle as the chief cornerstone or the focal point of both okay and it's that idea i wish i hoped to develop this morning and talk about if you read the new testament one thing you will notice is there are a lot of quotes in it from the old testament i know we like the new testament and you know i can remember being in fifth grade and i don't think they do this anymore but the gideons came in and gave every one of us a little new testament in psalm a little red bible i think i still have one of those in the house that makes it pretty old but i we have these little bibles we read the new testament but you will notice as you read through there there are many many quotes from the old testament and it's been argued and that you really can't fully understand a lot of the things and the symbolism

the thing they're talking about in the new testament unless you know the old testament because it is one of the foundations of that but i would like to reverse that statement and say you cannot really fully understand the old testament without knowing the new so really you need both right that's why we're built on apostles and prophets and jesus christ the chief cornerstone in the word of hebrews chapter 1 and verses 1 and 2 it says this god who at sundry times and in diverse manners spake and times past unto the fathers by the prophet hath in these last days spoken unto us by his son so he said god revealed himself through the old testament he was a gradual revealing of god to man he revealed himself self-first in creation we look at creation and we see god the bible tells us the handiworks of of his hand and he revealed himself through the law and he built himself through history and he revealed himself through the voice of his prophets and so that is that sundry times or many different times and in divers or in many different ways that god revealed himself but in the new testament in these last days he said god has revealed himself

through jesus christ so no longer is it just old testament law and prophets but now it is revealed he has revealed himself through jesus christ in the words of john in john 1 18 he said this no man hath seen god at any time god is that invisible spirit but he does they say this the only begotten son or jesus which is in the bosom of the father he hath declared him or he hath shown forth he has spoken it he have made him known so jesus is the complete and perfect revelation of god to man what the old testament was and pointing forward to jesus christ jesus christ when he said i come to fulfill the law was he wasn't saying well that means i come to just complete ever to to do this and to make sure i missed didn't miss this commandment i lived although he did live that perfect life but what he was saying is i am what it was all about what you saw in the law you see the whole thing in me and that's why none of it is going to go away it revealed god well i'm going to reveal god to you in completeness and so what the old testament could only do in a way and in types and in shadows the new testament does in the full reality we look at jesus

and we see completely the bible says this in hebrews 10 the law it had a shadow of good things to come and not the very image it was just something you could see and you could tell something was there there was a shadow and and that must be god over there but when jesus come they didn't have to look at a shadow anymore they could look right into the face the very image of god and so to interpret the old testament and to really understand its relevancy to us as to we as christians we have to approach it as we see it approached in the new testament okay how did the people in the new testament how did the apostles how did those in the new testament look at the old testament every major writer in the old in the new testament looked to the old to validate what they saw in jesus want us to understand that that's where i want to i want to kind of rest here for a little bit they looked to the old not to see if they could figure it all out or figure out who jesus was they saw who jesus was and then they looked to the old to see what they could find out what it said about jesus in other words they look first to jesus and then they look to the

scriptures to find him there and i want to say it this way jesus became the lens through which they viewed scripture i start with jesus and then i look at the old testament now when they use the word scriptures we will point this out particularly until you get later and maybe peter when he's he's talking about writings of paul also but for the most part any time and definitely when jesus talked about scriptures or those in in jesus day they were always talking about the old testament they didn't have a new testament it hadn't been written yet so when they would refer to what does the scripture say they were saying what's it say in the old testament okay and so when the new testament writers saw something in his birth and his life in the message and his miracles in his death in jesus resurrection whatever it is they looked to the old testament for scriptures to substantiate what they saw so he was the lens he was the starting point for them the old testament didn't interpret jesus it talked about him but he interprets the old testament we're going to talk about that difference the study of biblical interpretation for what it's worth

and i'm only mentioning because i'm going to use this word a few times is hermeneutics and that is just how you interpret the bible how you interpret scripture the word itself is not important but i think the context or the content is important to us because how we interpret the bible will largely determine how we respond to it right to the guy that read it and said well it's a great book about wars and murders and it's just great his interpretation of the bible missed what the bible was trying to say to some people it is just a story to some they look to it and say well it's pretty good history some say well i like it because it has some moral teaching or they look to the proverbs and they say well it just got some good principles from life those that say read proverbs read one chapter every day every every month you know go through it a chapter at a time every month and they read it just for what wisdom they can claim glean from it and then still others just look at it and say i don't understand this book it's confusing to me it's just incomprehensible and they don't even bother to read it at all so my question can we really know

what the bible says can we really know what it's all about i believe we can amen as long as we view it through the lens of jesus christ and i'm convinced that that is if you will the hermeneutic the writers of the new testament used let's look at some examples one be when you begin to read the new testament if you start at the beginning in our bibles it's laid out you read the first book is matthew and it would take the remainder of the lesson to cite and go through every example matthew uses of the old testament he opens his gospel with the genealogy of jesus he begins with abraham talks about goes through david and he talks about those up until israel was carried away into babylon and he talks about jesus genealogy all the way up to joseph and he tells us what was 14 generations from abraham to david and it was 14 from david to the carrying away and it was 14 from not sure how that all fit but he was looking to basically the old testament and saying here's my source of where jesus came from here's his genealogy and then he begins to tell the story of jesus birth 22 verses into chapter one he quotes the old testament directly matthew

1 22 23 he said now all this talking about jesus birth talking about the angels coming to talk to joseph and the things that happened there he said all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the lord by the prophet saying behold a virgin shall be with a child and shall bring forth a son and you shall call his name emmanuel which being interpreted is god with us matthew was quoting isaiah 7 14 which says this therefore the lord himself should give you a sign behold a virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall call his name emmanuel we hear those scriptures at christmas time right we bring them forth we talk about all the prophecies and the things that happened during that christmas season now here's what i want to point out if you ever go back and read through isaiah and i'm sure you have if you read through the bible if you read isaiah 7 and 14. it's real plain that isaiah was talking to king ahaz he was talking about some things that were going to happen there and some armies that were going to attack him and some things that were going on and he was telling them how that god was going to work for them and

god was going to send the enemies away and then he said and ahaz i don't know if ahaz looked like yeah right or looked had this looked like he didn't believe it or whatever and he said so here's what i wanted to do ask and god will give you a sign to prove to you that what i'm saying is true he says i don't need to i don't want to do that you know i don't want to ask god for a sign and then he said well then the lord himself is going to give you a sign a virgin's going to conceive and bear a son and you'll call his name emmanuel when he said that he's talking about an event that was going to occur that ahaz was going to see and yet matthew understood when he saw that jesus was born of the virgin mary and he reads through isaiah and he reads that verse he said you know what he must have been talking about more than just what happened back there 600 years earlier we talked about prophecy some time ago it's been a few years before the pandemic hit us and we were going through some properties prop property prophecy stuff and one of the things we observed about it is that prophecy is often fulfilled in more ways than one god will give a

prophecy that's fulfilled right here and then it really is looking forward to something even greater and fulfilled in a more complete and perfect way and once matthew saw jesus and he looked back at the old testament that verse just jumped out to him he must be talking about jesus that's the way the apostles read the old testament where can i find jesus in here now i know there are some that went clear off on the deep end and made everything an allegory and just threw it all out but he read that verse in the old testament and he saw jesus let me give you another one more example from him he repeats that same hermeneutic that same idea in matthew chapter 2 and verse 14 and 15. joseph he said arose and he took jesus and his mother by night and he went into egypt and he was there until the death of herod because herod wanted to kill the babies he said that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the lord by the prophet saying out of egypt have i called my son now where did matthew get that verse hosea chapter 11 and verse 1. here's what hosea said when israel was a child i loved him and i called my son out of egypt now when you read

that it's apparent that he's talking about the exodus when god through moses led the children of israel out of egypt out of egypt i've called my son yet matthew looked at it not as history but he says how does this relate to jesus christ he was carried into egypt and when it came time he was called out of egypt and he understood that as a foreshadowing of jesus what we gleaned from these two examples and many others as we said if you go through matthew is that matthew saw jesus everywhere in the old testament and he looked for him the old testament provided the pattern but jesus was providing the actual fulfillment okay was matthew alone in that interpretation let's look at it let's look further matthew and luke both record jesus as saying this in matthew 16 and 4 there shall be no sign given to you unruly un believing generation but one i'm going to give you one sign and that is the sign of the prophet jonah now what was he talking about matthew explains it jesus goes on and said for as jonah was three days and three nights in the whale's belly so shall the son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth well now

when i read jonah it never really occurred to me that you were talking about a resurrection or a man buried in a tomb but jesus said when you see what happened in my life you can correlate these things this is the sign that is given here's an example of jesus himself taking event from the old testament and interpreting it to the lens of his own life i know everyone likes a good fish story and most church kids can tell that story of jonah but jesus points out that the story was not given just for a neat story of something that happened but it was going to be a sign that he was going to spend three days in the earth or in a tomb which was much more important and a much more consequential event for humanity than what happened with jonah right so although we like that story it really was pointing to something greater he's going to die and he's going to be three days but he's going to resurrect and he's coming out of the tomb and the writers and jesus himself looked to the old testament and pulled that out and said that's pointing toward me moving to the epistles we see the writer of hebrews viewing the old testament through what he saw

in jesus and in fact large portions of that book deal with the old testament you can go through there and he just over and over again talking about the priesthoods and the sacrifices and melchizedek from the old testament and just all kinds of different things i'm going to look at just one example hebrews 8 beginning at verse 1. he said now the things which we have spoken this is the sum the things we've been talking about he was talking about jesus being a priest after the order melchizedek and he said we have a high priest who is set on the right hand of the throne of the majesty in heaven he is a minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the lord pitched and not man for every high priest talking about the ones on earth are ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices wherefore it is necessary that this man talking about jesus also had something to offer they would offer the lamb of the blood of lambs and goats jesus was going to offer his own blood right for if he were on the earth he wouldn't be a priest because there's already priests that offer the gifts according to the law they serve and here's what he says unto the

example and shadow of heavenly things in other words those in the law all that stuff that was written was just an example or a shadow of the real thing he said and as moses was admonished of god when he was about to make the tabernacle god told moses specifically in other words see saith he make all things according to the pattern that was shown thee in the mount and so the writer here he begins speaking of jesus as our high priest and he quickly points out that his high priest notice what he said he is a minister of the sanctuary in the true tabernacle not the one moses built not the one that exodus talks about when you read through there not the one that they carried around through the wilderness not later the tab or the temples that they built but he says he ministers not here but he ministers in heaven first because there's already priests that are here that have that duty on earth but second because and here's what he points out the tabernacle and i don't know if we'll ever get to exodus maybe at some point that's not in future study right at this point but if you get to exodus and read the tabernacle plan it all points toward

jesus christ and what the writer of hebrews says is the tabernacle in heaven is the real tabernacle the sacrifice that covers sin is the sacrifice of jesus that's the real sacrifice and everything in the old testament was just pointing toward jesus the tabernacle they made had to be duplicated exactly because it was representative but it's what is real and so he said i know you see it and it looks like a real tabernacle but it's just it's just pointing to what's really in heaven and what really the sacrifice is all about that's why moses built it exactly as i said so when we look at hebrews the way they interpreted the old testament was again through the lens of jesus christ looking at jesus and seeing what is it saying about jesus peter continues this process it's somewhat confusing probe in the prose in the king james language in first peter 1 10-12 he talks about our salvation this great salvation we have and he said the prophets have inquired and they've searched diligently who prophesied to the grace that come to you they're trying to figure it out what's the scroll what's the spirit talking about searching what or what manner

of time the spirit of christ which is in them did signify when it testified beforehand the sufferings of christ and the glory that should follow unto him was revealed that not unto themselves but unto us they did minister the things which are now reported under you by then of the preach the gospel that's a mouthful let's take it apart just a little bit what he is saying was the prophets prophesied to god they inquired about this salvation the spirit of god was upon them the spirit of christ and it spoke through them things they did not understand it talked about behold i'm going to take the stony heart out of your flesh i'm going to put in a new heart behold i will put my spirit within you it talked about all these things and so they were inquiring and trying to figure out what is he talking about and then you get to isaiah and it starts talking about how jesus suffered and it talked about he was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for iniquities and and all these things and they looked at that and said this is the messiah we don't understand that and then it talked about his great glory and he was a king and gonna reign on the

throne forever throne of his father david and they looked at all these things and they said how do we put all this together it doesn't seem to make sense and so it said that they inquired and they searched diligently trying to figure it out we don't understand the sufferings and we don't understand the glory that you're talking about we can't put it together and then he said unto whom it was revealed not unto themselves in other words those that it was revealed to or that wrote those scriptures never understood what the bible was talking about and peter goes on to say but here's what we know they were ministering to us those that know jesus we can figure it out now because we're looking at the old testament through the eyes of jesus that's how we view it through the eyes of jesus and so it really wasn't for their benefit because they didn't know it but it was for ours he said who have experienced the power of the holy ghost so peter looked to the old testament prophecies through his understanding of jesus and when he did he saw jesus in that old testament first peter 1 18 and 19 he saw the sacrifices of the old testament he saw the

blood that was offered and he saw all those things and he wrote this you weren't redeemed with corruptible things from your vain conversation or your way of life received by traditions from the fathers in other words the things that you heard here in the old testament that did not redeem you it just kept pushing those sins forward he said but you are redeemed with what the precious blood of christ as of a lamb without blemish and without spot so he looked at the old testament and he saw all the sacrifices that you read about in leviticus and everything that would happen there and he said you know what in all that i see jesus it was all pointing to jesus in first peter 2 6 he quotes isaiah 28 16 where for also it is contained in the scripture behold i lay in zion a chief cornerstone elect and precious and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded what were they talking about the apostles did the prophets that said it did not know but once he saw jesus and he saw what happened he said that's the cornerstone that's who it was talking about now i understand now i can look back to the prophets through the lens of jesus christ and

i can understand this prophecy is talking about him that scripture is talking about him this here was revealing him that's talking about jesus and he could look back at that old testament and see what jesus see jesus in it it's apparent from all these examples that the new testament writers saw the gospel of jesus christ throughout all the old testament now i went as you may have may have caught it i went from matthew and luke in the words of jesus and then i went to the epistles and i went all the way to hebrews and i skipped over a whole bunch of them it's because paul had a whole lot to say how he interpreted the old testament we're not going to go to all of it but i do want to return to one passage and look at that probably the most direct explanation is second corinthians chapter three in this chapter paul again is telling of moses receiving the law and he talks about how he come down from the mountain and because he had the law and he'd been in the presence of god that his face shone so much that the people didn't even want to look at him and they said can you cover your face moses we can't stand to see all that glory of god upon

you and so moses puts on a veil and every time he would approach the people he would he would put on a veil and when he went to talk with god he'd go into the tabernacle they had and he'd take the veil off and he talked to god and he'd put it back on so he could come back out and talk to the people because they didn't want to see it was just too much and so paul writes this but their minds were blinded because even now or to this day until this day there remains a veil that is untaken away in the reading of the old testament in other words you jews that are looking and reading the law and trying to figure it all out you're doing it through a veil you're missing the glory of god as revealed in jesus christ and so he said this that veil is done away with in jesus he said but even to this day when moses is railed red there is a veil over their hearts nevertheless when it or when their hearts turn to the lord when they look to jesus that veil is taken away what he is saying is once you know jesus the veil is removed so when you look at the old testament what do you see you see jesus you see jesus before i come to the final application let's

look briefly at the text that we read at the beginning the first passage jesus is walking along incognito with his disciples they don't even know who he is they're walking on that that just i still can't understand that so walking along beside them he made himself their eyes were holding they didn't know who he was they're talking about jesus he died and he crucified and we're just so upset and you know all this happened and now he's dead and he's they put him in the tomb we saw him roll the stone and we walk away and three days later we come and now we don't know where he is and we don't know what happened and jesus looked at them ought not christ who have suffered these things and to enter into his glory do you not understand what peter was talking about earlier we talked about the suffering and the glorification of jesus do you not understand that and so where did he go to show them he goes to the old testament and said beginning at moses or the law and then all the prophets he expounded unto them in all the scriptures in all the old testament the things concerning himself explains it to him how through the old testament using the

old testament jesus walked them through the book and revealed himself to you here's what it was talking about it was talking about jesus it was talking about jesus of course he's talking about himself you could say as we've been saying throughout this lesson jesus old testament hermeneutic if you will was the lens of himself he was looking at the old testament saying here's what you need to understand it's talking about me just a few verses later we read he's standing there before his disciples and he said these words which i spake to you while i was yet with you i already told you all these things they were written in the law of the moses they were written in the prophets they were written in the psalms and they all concerned me and then it says he opened their understanding or as paul would say he lifted the veil and suddenly it all made sense i read the old testament and now i see jesus they would never read the scriptures the same way again because when they looked at the old testament they saw jesus the last verse we read in our text jesus looking at the religious leaders and those that did not believe in him and he said here's

what you need to do search the scriptures the old testament and when you do that he said they are they which testify of me you go back there and what are you going to read you're going to see me you're going to see jesus in the old testament search the scriptures and you will see me now you may be asking this morning why have i gone to such great lengths so to describe the new testament writer's use of the old testament as i said earlier starting in september not next week because it's youth week the following week we're going to be studying bible themes from genesis now i'm sure most of you could tell the story of creation if you've taught sunday school you've taught it day one this happened day two that happened and then this happened we could go through it and you could tell the story of of adam and eve and how adam was causing great sleep to fall on a rib taken out he was created they were put in the garden you could talk about the tree and you could talk about the serpent you could talk about the fall and you could talk about the flood and you could talk about you could tell all those stories you've heard them for childhood but

what we are going to do is a slow and i said it earlier very slow walk through some of this material to look to see through the lens of the gospel of jesus what we can discern we won't be concerned so much about what was created when but what i want to do is look at the great themes and the doctrines and the motifs that are presented in the book of genesis someone said you can read the whole bible in the book of genesis you can go there and it points forward to just about every major doctrine how slow of a walk well how's this the next three months we're going to study three chapters genesis 1 2 and 3. so here's here's a challenge for you read genesis one two three each week of our study just read all three chapters won't take you that long but here's what i want you to do read it slowly and see if you can see some of these great themes look for doctrines look for teachings look for jesus if you will in everything you read there and say how does this apply to jesus and then how does it apply to my life now here's the thing i don't claim to have all the answers and you may find some things that i overlooked and missed if so email me

i mentioned it a lot early on mybibleclass at hotmail.com if you will do that then i'll have your email and i can correspond with you but also you can send it send it to me look at genesis from a new perspective and here's what it is look at it through the lens of jesus christ and see what it speaks to your heart aren't you thankful his word i'm thankful it's not just some confusing book but it's all about him it's all about him let's stand amen why don't you just lift a hand and thank him for his word
