Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
A Sacrifice Acceptable, Well Pleasing to God
- Harris closes the month of teaching on the altar of incense by turning to Philippians, in a passage concerning Paul and a man called Epaphroditus, where Paul speaks of the gift the Philippi church sent him.
- Paul said it was not that he desired a gift, but that he desired fruit that would abound to their account; having received what they sent, he called it an odor of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable and well pleasing to God.
- Pastor Gibson had taught the Wednesday before on that aroma rising to the Lord: our worship and our praise are a sweet smell, a sacrifice, unto God.
- The same text promises that God will supply all our need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus, able to do exceeding abundantly above all we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.
- We may never be acceptable in everybody's sight, for we are full of faults and shortcomings, but the most important thing is that when we offer ourselves to the Lord we are acceptable and well pleasing to him.
Scriptures: Philippians 4:17-19
The Sacrifice of Praise and Doing Good
- By him we are to offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually — the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to his name.
- The name of Jesus is to be spoken every day: over food, in prayer, and on the road; there is power, authority, deliverance, and anointing in that name, and at that name every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
- To do good and to communicate goes far beyond talking: it means to share, to impart, and to give to another — active compassion; every one of us is here because somebody communicated the gospel to us.
- With such sacrifices God is well pleased; he is no respecter of persons, and in every nation whoever fears God and works righteousness is accepted by him.
- Because sin separates man from God and God will not hear a heart that regards iniquity, the prayer is for a searched and cleansed heart — no stinking attitude, jealous, lustful, or rebellious spirit, but a right spirit.
Scriptures: Hebrews 13:15-16
The Everlasting Covenant and a Maturing People
- The God of peace brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant.
- We are redeemed not by corruptible things, background, or lineage, but by the precious blood of Jesus, as of a lamb without spot or blemish; the covenant never ends, and death is only getting off one bus and getting on another.
- God's work is to make us mature in every good work to do his will, working in us what is well pleasing in his sight; we never stop growing, learning, and searching the scriptures.
- It is not about us: he must increase and we must decrease; every time we gather at the house of God or go to the closet of prayer, we present an acceptable sacrifice.
- Our affections are to be set on things above — on the city whose builder and maker is God, the heavenly Jerusalem where the Lamb is the light; here we have no continuing city, but we seek one to come.
Scriptures: Hebrews 13:20-21
Lift Up Your Hands, Your Heart, and Your Prayer
- The scripture calls us again and again to lift up: our eyes to the hills from whence our help comes, our hearts with our hands to the Lord; God never sleeps, is never weary, and is never in a place where it is too hard for him.
- We are to pray lifting up holy hands without wrath and without doubting — giving God the anger of the road and the job, and believing that what he said he would do, and did before, he can do again.
- The Son of Man was lifted up on the cross, wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities, delivered for our offenses and raised for our justification; our job is to tell the lost and carry the gospel into all the world.
- We lift up the hands that hang down and the feeble knees, and uphold our pastor in prayer — as Aaron and Hur held up hands in the midst of battle, and a great victory followed; we lift up our heads, O gates, for the King of glory is coming in.
- "Let my prayer be set before thee as incense, and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice" — prayers that rise do not return void; like Cornelius, our prayers and our alms build a memorial before God.
- To be wounded in the house of friends is to identify with him who came to his own and was rejected; the answer is forgiveness, humility under the mighty hand of God, and resisting the devil steadfast in the faith until God exalts in due season.
The Holy Incense and the Way Behind the Veil
- The incense for the tabernacle was a confection after the art of the apothecary, tempered together, pure and holy; some of it was beaten very small and put before the testimony in the place where God would meet with them, and it was most holy.
- That perfume was not to be made for themselves after the same composition; it was holy for the Lord — we cannot offer religious duty and then live as we please, for no one can serve two masters.
- The altar of incense stood as the step before going behind the veil, and its sweet savor had to rise in God's way, not mixed in our own way.
- Harris declares the word of Acts 2:38 — "Repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost" — and gives thanks for this truth and for the word of God.
Scriptures: Exodus 30:35; Acts 2:38
Dead Flies in the Ointment: a Little Folly
- Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to bring forth a stinking savor; so does a little folly in one who is in reputation for wisdom and honor.
- Flies speak of evil, pestilence, and filth: Harris recalls them overseas — swallowed unnoticed in a drink, eating away at the ears of dogs, and the tsetse fly whose bite brings sleeping sickness; he refuses to be spiritually asleep in a pleasure-driven last day.
- Folly is willing ignorance: Saul kept insisting he had obeyed while the animals he was commanded to destroy made their noise, and Samuel's answer was that obedience is better than sacrifice; what we refuse to utterly destroy in our lives can one day destroy us.
- The works of the flesh are found in Galatians, the first four beginning with immorality — adultery, fornication, uncleanness, and lasciviousness — and those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God; the call is to put off the flesh and put on Jesus Christ.
- Saul's little folly grew until he went to the witch of Endor and fell on his own spear; folly works by moral corruption, rejection of God's wisdom, and pride — and pride is what brought Satan down from heaven.
Scriptures: Ecclesiastes 10:1; Galatians (book-only, as spoken)
Who Shall Abide in Thy Tabernacle?
- Who shall abide in God's tabernacle and dwell in his holy hill? He that walks uprightly and works righteousness — and righteousness is a work, for our own righteousness is as filthy rags until his righteousness works in us.
- He speaks the truth in his heart; with the psalmist we pray, "Create in me a clean heart, and renew within me a right spirit," because a divided heart is faulty and the flies are always looking to contaminate.
- He does not backbite with his tongue: the tongue is the most unruly member, meant for the sacrifice of praise, to bless and encourage rather than to bite a friend once his back is turned.
- He does no evil to his neighbor and takes up no reproach against him; he honors those who fear the Lord, swears to his own hurt and changes not, and refuses usury and bribes against the innocent — he who does these things shall never be moved.
- "Who can understand his errors? Cleanse thou me from secret faults" — only the Lord searches the heart; we ask to be kept back from presumptuous sins so they have no dominion, and that the words of our mouth and the meditation of our heart be acceptable in his sight.
- Like Daniel, who still prayed three times a day with his window open toward heaven though prayer was forbidden, we keep lifting our voice to the Lord; what he requires is to do justly, love mercy, and show to others the mercy we ourselves have obtained.
Scriptures: Psalms 15:1-2; Psalms (book-only, as spoken); Psalms 19:12
The Publican's Prayer and a Pure Heart
- Two men went up to the temple to pray: the Pharisee, trusting in himself that he was righteous, thanked God he was not as other men and recited his fasting and his tithes.
- Comparing ourselves with others is unwise — as it says in Corinthians — for we are all different in talent, ability, and calling; to despise others while craving the sweet savor is to let flies into the ointment.
- The publican would not lift up even his eyes to heaven, but smote his breast, saying, "God, be merciful to me a sinner" — and he went down to his house justified; everyone who exalts himself shall be abased, and he who humbles himself shall be exalted.
- We were washed, sanctified, and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of God when we were baptized in Jesus' name and filled with the Holy Ghost, but it remains a whole life of washing and justification.
- Romans calls us to be wise unto that which is good and simple concerning evil — simple meaning pure, unmixed, and untainted by sin.
- The lesson closes with the congregation standing to lift their hands, resolved to keep offering the acceptable sacrifice, to be doers of the word and not hearers only, and to keep on loving God and well pleasing in his sight.

Why don't you be seated today? Amen. It's good to be in the house of the Lord tonight. Thankful for all of his goodness. We're going to continue in the vein. This will be the last uh part of the month that we are talking about the altar of incense. And uh we want to look at some scriptures and uh just dig into the word of God. How many of you love the word of God? Amen. Thy word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee. All scripture is given by inspiration of God. It is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction and righteousness, that the man of God or the woman of God may be thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
Thank God for his word. Praise God. Love the word. Read it daily. Study it. Search the scriptures. They testify of him. The gateway to eternal life. Praise God. Praise God. Thank you online for joining us. God richly bless you tonight. Turning your attention to the book of Philippians chapter 4 verse 17- 19. The setting of the scripture is concerning Paul and an individual called Epaproditis. Quite a name. I don't think you would name your son that different name. But this man was mentioned in the Bible and it said this, Paul said, "Not because I desire a gift." He was receiving a gift from the Philippi church. Uh he depended upon assistance. It'd be like you sending a gift uh uh to someone, a gift package or something to help them. Money was involved perhaps. Uh but you know what he said? I'm not It's not that I desire a gift, but you know what?
Do you really want it? But I desire fruit that it may abound to your account. Amen. That that there would be blessings that God would sustain you, that God would provide, and God would do things in your lives. And he said, "But I have all and abound, and I am full. And having received of this the things which were sent from you, an odor of a sweet smell. Pastor Gibson spoke last Wednesday on that aroma that comes up unto the Lord. Your worship and your praise is an aroma unto the Lord. A sweet smell, a sacrifice. And this is what I want to draw your attention to tonight. Acceptable, well pleasing to God.
Amen. I want to be acceptable and well pleasing unto God. Praise God. But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. He can supply all of your need. Praise God. He is able to do exceeding abundantly above all you can ask or think according to the power that workketh within you. Amen. We have the ability to access the power of God that we will be acceptable in his sight. You might not ever be acceptable in everybody's sight because we are full of faults and we have our shortcomings and we have our challenges.
But oh, tonight I want to bring across to you the most important thing when you offer up yourself unto the Lord that you are acceptable and well pleasing unto God. Praise God. Amen. A sacrifice acceptable, well pleasing unto God. Hebrews chapter 13 and verse 15 and 16. By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually. That is the fruit of our lips giving thanks unto his name. The fruit of our lips our lips being able to speak the name of Jesus. Whatsoever thou doest in word or deed do all in the name of Jesus. uh that at the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess uh that Jesus Christ is Lord.
Amen. We are just warming up for that great reunion on that day. We're speaking that name every day in our lives in the name of Jesus. Uh I speak it over food. I speak it in prayer. I speak it definitely when I travel down these roads. Uh praise God that name. And you know what? When you come into his presence uh and you offer up thanksgiving and praise, it's a sweet odor unto the Lord and it is acceptable and well pleasing to God. His name is above every name. Praise God that at the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Don't you love the name? Speak the name daily.
Amen. Love that name. There's power in the name. There's authority in the name. There's deliverance in the name. There's anointing in the name of Jesus. Praise God. But look what it says here in verse 16. But to do good, let us do good and to communicate. Forget not. This goes far beyond our English word of communicate. This speaks of a term to share, to impart, to give to another. It speaks of active compassion. I stand here before you today because somebody communicated the gospel to me.
Somebody communicated with God and then they imparted to me spiritual principles and guidance uh that brought me to this place tonight that brought you to the journey tonight. We are all on a journey. Uh there is no difference between any of us. Uh God is no respector of persons in every nation. He that fearth God and workketh righteousness is accepted by him. Praise God. Amen. To to fear God uh and to keep his commandments is the whole duty of man. Praise God. To do those things that are acceptable unto him.
So part of that is doing good. I'm offering up praise uh and then I'm speaking his name and I'm talking to somebody about the Lord. I'm encouraging someone in the Lord. Praise God. I'm communicating to share and to impart to another. We're all here because somebody did that for us. How many of you raise your hand if you baptized yourself tonight? Oh, someone had to baptize you, huh? Okay. For with such sacrifices, God is well pleased. I know we want to please God. That's one of the reasons why we're here. We want to see him on that day to see that great welcome in heaven.
Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Enter thou into the joy of the Lord. Amen. Hear those words. I don't want to hear the words, "Depart from me, ye worker of iniquity. I never knew you." How could an old all knowing God never know us? Because sin separates man from God. If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me. So Lord, search my heart. If there's any unclean in me thing in me, cleanse me from all unrighteousness. Renew a right spirit. Don't let me have a stinking attitude or a stinking spirit or a jealous spirit or a lustful spirit or a rebellious spirit, but Lord, a right spirit because I want to be acceptable in your sight and I want to be well pleasing unto God. We've been talking about the tabernacle and we'll get into that in a little more detail.
But there's another scripture in Hebrews, the same chapter, but verses 20 and 21. It says, "Now the God of peace that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep." Amen. We are the sheep and he is that great shepherd. He is the chief shepherd and bishop of our souls. The scripture says through the blood of the everlasting covenant that God would make an everlasting covenant with you. This covenant will usher you into eternity. It never ends. Uh death is not an end. Death is just you're getting off one bus and you're getting on another. You keep rolling. You don't ever have to worry about being afraid of passing over. We don't want to cross over muddy Jordan. We might get to the edge and look there. Oh, I'm not too sure about that. Uh but to die in the Lord.
Praise God. To serve him all your life. And then to hear those words, well done. Come on in, thou good and faithful servant. But praise God. Thank God for his word, that great shepherd of the sheep that brought the blood of the everlasting covenant. Precious blood. We've been not we're not redeemed by the corruptible lifestyles and the background and perhaps our lineage and and what tribe you come from or what people you're from, but we are redeemed by the precious blood of Jesus. as of a lamb without spot nor blemish.
Praise God. That has redeemed us. Uh and that made us recipients of that covenant. Uh it's the everlasting covenant. What God does, the Bible says it is forever. Man's not going to change it. Time's not going to change it. What humanity is saying today is not going to change it. God will have the final say. And we want to be obedient unto him. It says, "Make you perfect in every good work that makes you mature." That that we are we are going on to perfection. It's not someone who has arrived and and you you've got it all made. No, you're constantly maturing in the Lord.
The Bible says, "Grow in the knowledge and in the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." We never stop growing. We never stop learning. We never stop searching the scriptures. We never stop studying to show yourself approved unto God. A workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. Uh that's what we are doing. We are continuing in the word of God. We are loving the word of God. It's meat to us. It's honey. In fact, it's sweeter than the honeycomb.
Amen. It is precious in our sight. do his will working in you that is well pleasing in his sight. God, you work on me. You are maturing me. Lord, you are helping me. It is your will, not my will, but your will be done. You must increase and I must decrease. It's not about me. It's not about you. It's about him and his collective will for all of us. Praise God. Thank God for the church. Thank God for the body of Christ. Thank God for the believers. Uh thank God for the calledout ones that we could gather together. We could encourage one another that the preaching of the word of God can go forth. Uh that we can be doers of the word and hearers of the word and be blessed in that need.
Praise God. Every time you come to the house of God and you submit yourself to him, every time you go to your closet of prayer and you pray and talk to the Lord, uh you you are presenting a presentable and acceptable sacrifice which is well pleasing. Set your affections on things above. You you're having problems in this life. We all have problems. There's challenges. There's situations, on the job, in the family, in sickness, and in health. Amen. There's all kinds of scenarios. Uh but if you set your desire, I'm looking for a city whose builder and maker is God.
Amen. Here we have no continuing city. We might like Chattanooga, but Chattanooga is not a continuing city. We seek one to come. That new heavenly Jerusalem where the Lamb is the light. Praise God. Amen. Walls of Jasper, streets of gold. Amen. Those gates that are wide open and angels standing there, not barring the gate, but saying, "Come on in. Welcoming you in." Amen. I want to see that city. And the most of all, I want to see him face to face. Uh, amen. I want to see you on that day.
Praise God. And guess what? We might have connecting doors in heaven. You say, "Well, down here, we can't even go on vacation together. We can't get along." But up there, you might have connecting doors with that individual. Come on in. Because don't we all want to make it acceptable and well pleasing unto God? Praise God. Lift up your eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help. My help comes from the Lord. Amen. He's not going to sleep. God's not asleep. There was an old song that that um was written years ago. God works the night shift. sleeping and everything. God's busy. He never sleeps. He's never weary. Uh he's never in a place where it's too hard for him. He is the almighty.
Praise God. Amen. Lift up your heart with your hands. Uh the scripture says, "Here it is, Lord. I'm going to lift it up." Oh, I It's not only my hands, but Lord, here's my heart. Lord, create in me a clean heart. Praise God. I will lift up my hands in thy name. And the scripture says, "Lord, I'm going to lift you up. This is that evening sacrifice, so to speak, that is the acceptable and well pleasing unto him. That incense that ascends up, a sweet smell and savor, something that is pleasing unto him." Lord, I don't want a stinking smell. I I want that sweet smell.
Praise God. I want that precious thing to go up to you. I will that all men everywhere pray lifting up holy hands without wrath or doubt. Oh, I'm mad today because someone cut me off on the interstate. I'm mad today because something happened on my work, Lord. I'm just going to give it to you, Lord. I'm going to lift up holy hands and I'm going to give you I'm not going to abide in wrath. I'm not going to let anger control my life and and rule me, Lord. I'm going to give it unto you and I'm not going to doubt. You said you would do it and I believe it and you did it in the past and you can do it again.
Praise God. Having faith in God, I will lift up my soul unto thee. He said in the scripture, if I be lifted up, I will draw on men unto me. He must this. The Bible said the son of man had to be lifted up upon above the earth and they lifted him up upon a cross and they crucified him and he was wounded for our transgressions and he was bruised for our iniquities and the chastisement of our peace was upon him and by his stripes ye were healed. Praise God. Uh he was delivered for our offenses and he was raised for our justification.
Praise God. He did that for you. Calvary. Calvary, would you please, please speak to me. Tell me how much I owe. I've got to repay. The echoes that ring clear over the hills of old Judea. Tell the lost. Tell the lost. Tell the lost. Our job is the gospel plan. Our job is to facilitate and to help others. Uh this church is gathered together for a purpose. Uh is to help spread the gospel in all of the world. the gospel be preached in all of the world among all nations and then shall the end come. Don't worry about how it's all going to happen and come together. Our job now is to be involved in God's kingdom.
Thank God for that. Lift up hands which hang down and feeble knees. Sometimes your knees might get feeble. Amen. But let them be feeble from the uh impact of you praying on your knees. Praise God. Amen. And make straight paths, Lord. Let me not walk crooked paths. Let me not do things that are that that mis that does not please you, but let there be straight paths and let me lift up hands that hang down. Sometimes your hands get weary. Sometimes the ministry gets weary. We need to uphold our pastor in prayer. Just like Aaron and her on each side in the midst of battle, they held up uh uh his hands in order to have a great victory. And there was a v great victory on that day.
Praise God. Lift up your heads, oh ye gates. Ye have everlasting doors. Why are we lifting up? Because the king of glory is coming in. Who is this king of glory? The Lord of hosts. Uh he's the king of glory. Oh, we open it up for him. That's opening. That's lifting. That's uh I'm going to open. Praise God. Open it up for the King to come in. Unto thee, oh Lord, do I lift my soul and I trust thee. Let me not be ashamed. Let not my enemies triumph over me. Let not the enemies of the works of the flesh triumph over me. Let not the carnality of this world triumph over me. Let not the the indoctrination and as the scripture says, the doctrines of devils uh speak to my spirit in this day. Let them not triumph over me, but let me triumph in you.
Amen. Let me have the victory in you. This is the victory that overcometh the world, even your faith. Amen. Your faith is precious. Uh that's why the Bible says receive in the end of your faith one day even the salvation of your soul. You're going you won't need faith when you're in his presence. Uh you're not going to need to pray when you're in his presence. Uh it's going to be worship and adoration and given of glory and praise through eternity because one day we shall see the king in all of his beauty and we're going to behold that lamb that is a far off. Uh amen.
I want to see him face to face uh and hear those words. Well done. Amen. Acceptable and well pleasing in his sight. Let my prayer be set before thee as incense and the lifting of my hands as the evening sacrifice. Every time you pray and talk to the Lord, you're letting that incense go up. And when it goes up, it doesn't return void. Uh, amen. Those prayers go up. Uh, and they're lodged. And sometimes it can be like Cornelius. Uh, he was praying and he was building up that memorial.
Praise God. A and that it was a remembrance. The Bible says uh and then there came the time that because of that not only his prayers but his alms uh which were his acts of charity, his love to humanity. It's not only our prayers but it's putting into action what the word of God says. Loving one another tenderhearted forgiving one another even as our Lord and Savior has forgiven us. Do good to all men. especially those that are of the household of faith. Uh sometimes, my friends, you might be wounded in the house of your friends.
But let me encourage you, you identify with him uh because he came to his own and his own received him not and they crucified him and they said, "Give us Barabus uh and give us a robber and we want to trade him uh but crucify the Lord." And someday you're wounded. There are times you might be wounded in the house of your friends. Might be family. It might be in the church. Uh there are things that can happen, but I could encourage you tonight. You're identifying with him and turning the other cheek and saying, "Lord, I love you and I want you to do your work at me and I want to learn forgiveness." Sometimes people are put in our paths to teach us how to forgive and it can be difficult.
Praise God. But that incense that goes up, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God that he might exalt you in due season. Amen. There's the due season, but this is the day of humility. This is the day to humble ourselves. This is the day to to uh to submit ourselves. Praise God. Submit yourselves unto the Lord. Flee the devil. Uh submit yourself unto the Lord. Resist the devil and he shall flee from you. You don't have to run from him. Resist him steadfast in the faith.
Praise God. Thou, oh Lord, art a shield and my glory and the lifter of my head. Oh, you've got to look to the Lord. Lord, lift up my head. Amen. Set your own your affections on things above. Praise God. Now, the Bible says in Exodus 30 in verse 35, when they would begin to make the sweet perfumes, the incense for the tabernacle, if they could put that picture of the tabernacle up, if you could just have a a a glimpse of that huge tabernacle, it was amazing. But what they would do, they would they would make a perfume, a confection after the art of the apothecary, tempered together pure and holy. Verse 36. And thou shalt beat some of it very small, and put of it before the testimony of the tabernacle of the congregation, where I will meet with thee. It shall be unto you most holy. God was specific. God had specific plans. You read all through.
He had specific plans. He has specific plans in this day and age. It's not a gray area in the Bible. It's very clear. Amen. And look what it says in verse 37. And as for the perfume which thou shalt make, ye shall not make to yourselves according to the composition thereof. It shall be unto thee holy for the Lord. In other words, it's not for you just to use how you want to do it. Well, I'll offer my religious duty and then I'll go after covetousness or I'll I'll I'll sing my praises of the Lord and the rest of the week I live like the devil.
But you can't live in both worlds. A double-minded man is unstable in all of his ways. Doubleminded refers to trying to serve two masters. The Bible says it's impossible to serve two masters. You'll either love one and hate the other or vice versa. So here it says when you do that, it's not for yourelves. It's not for your own little personal enjoyment, but it is unto the Lord. We don't come to the house of God. We don't pray and seek his face to be seen of others or or well, I'm just going through the motions and and I'm just going to live like I want. No, God wants it to be everything.
I want to give you my all. And it's interesting the tabernacle there, how the picture of that, how it would be they'd all be gathered. And the whole purpose of that was uh for the eventually going into the holy place. And it's been brought out so clearly and I believe the next uh uh session of teachings will be going into the veil and beyond the veil. But the place of the uh altar of incense was the step before you would go behind the veil. that it was important that that incense, that sweet smell and savor would go up unto the Lord. And it could not be mixed just your own way. It had to be his way. That's why I like this message.
Amen. Acts 2:38. And Peter said unto them,"Repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." Thank God for this truth. Uh thank God for his blessings. Uh we have the word of God. Look with me in Ecclesiastes chapter 10 and verse one. Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to bring forth a stinking savor or a smell. So does a little folly with him that is in reputation for wisdom and honor.
Now, dead flies. There's something about flies. Living in a foreign country. I've seen how flies would come. They would land on people. They would lay eggs. They were carriers of disease. Bellub in the Bible, the Jews had spin a name on one of the gods of that day that they worshiped. in in their day bale worship bells above lord of the flies or lord of dong. What a descriptive name. The Bible has some very descriptive things that it brings out. If a person goes back into sin after coming out, what we might term backsliding, it is as a dog returning and eating its own vomit and a pig going back to the filth of the mire and wallering in that mire. Very descriptive. You say that's repulsive. Yes, that is what the Lord thinks.
If someone goes back into sin, that's why the scripture says we are not of those that return back to predition or destruction, but we go on to the saving of the soul. Lay aside every weight and the sin that does so easily beset you. Running this race with patience, looking unto Jesus, the author and the finisher of our faith. It is those little flies. Uh it's those little indiscretions, so to speak. It is the little foxes that spoil the vines. Uh those flies speak of evil. They speak of pestilence. Uh they speak of filth. Uh folly. What is folly? Folly is willingly uh ignorant spiritually. Uh I know what to do, but I'm going to do a few things. Uh that's why when the word says uh Saul Saul what's the meaning of these animals making all this noise when Samuel challenged him and Saul said I have obeyed the Lord and I've brought all of this and you know what he started doing he started blaming the people somebody else I'm in my predicament because somebody made me that way let me tell you something you are able to serve God regardless of what someone does to you, someone says to you, I firmly believe that God's grace is sufficient in every situation.
Praise God. But they said, he said, "Why is that? Why are these animals?" And he said, "I've obeyed the Lord." And and Saul said, "Obedience is better than sacrifice." Uh Saul, you were uh instructed to utterly destroy the Amlikites. What's the reason of King Ahag over here looking at us and why did you not destroy those things? Uh it is so important for us to completely destroy the things in our life that would one day destroy us spiritually. That's the works of the flesh. If you don't know what the works of the flesh, you find them in Galatians. Uh and the first four start with immorality. that starts with adultery, fornication, lasciviousness, uh a and uh uncleanness, all of these things. You can read about those things. And he who doeth such things uh shall not inherit the kingdom of God. We've got to put those things off and put on the whole armor of God.
Uh put on Jesus Christ and make no provision of the flesh. Uh let me tell you, we live in a real world. There are little flies that want to come along and get into your spirit. I'll never forget overseas, I'll be drinking something on a hot day and I I'll be out working or doing something and then I'll reach over and grab that cup and take a big swig and something was in there. And after swallowing a few and spitting out a few, I realize flies got in my drink. But they would get in the apothecary, the perfume, could also be the medicine, the ointment, and it would contaminate it. Be careful and don't let those little things contaminate your spirit. You want to be acceptable and well pleasing inside.
Praise God. Those flies would land on the dog's ears. We would have to put medicine constantly upon their ears because literally they they would begin to eat away at their ears and you'd see some dogs with just big old gaps in their ears where the flies got to it. Not only would that one fly called the Tetsy fly that would sting livestock or bite livestock and and it would result in what is called the sleeping sickness. I don't want to be spiritually asleep. Living in the last day, perilous times, in a day where men are lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God. We live in a pleasurdriven society. Let us seek the old paths. This is the way. Walk ye in it. Continue down the straight and narrow.
If the broad path beckons you, say, "No, I don't want no dead flies. I don't want a little folly. It was a little folly that came into Saul's life because of disobedience. But the folly led him to extreme things. He went to the witch of Endor. And then one day he self uh he he finished it on a battlefield putting a spear into his side at suicide. All because of those little things, folly. those that have great reputation of wisdom and honor. I'm telling you what, you as a Christian, it is honor and wisdom that God has placed within you. The Holy Ghost, amen, the earnest of your inheritance, the taste of what is to come. Uh we have taste of the world to come. How is that? Be partakers of his divine nature.
Amen. He's given you wisdom. And there there is a a beauty in that and there's honor. But folly is always lurking around. Oh, just a little this or a little of that. Moral corruption, rejection of God's wisdom. Look at this one. Self-reliance and pride. Oh, I'm too proud to do that. Oh God, pride goeth before destruction, a hotty spirit before a fall. Pride turned a choir leader into one that would fall. Amen. I saw Satan as a fall from heaven. Amen. He was created in all beauty.
Amen. You read the story. Uh Amen. until iniquity was found in him. the flies of folly. I've seen folly hit people and take them. Amen. Great men. We've read we we've seen individuals in in history because of a little folly, all the reputation of honor and dignity and power brought about folly. But oh God, help us to keep those flies out. Amen. We don't want anything to get into that perfume, into that ointment of the apothecary to bring forth a stinking savor, a stinking smell.
Amen. Have you ever heard the saying, uh, stinking attitude? Oh, yeah. I've had it. Stinking thinking. Oh, I've had it. Stinking pride. Well, I've had it. We all had it. But you've never They heard sweet smell and pride. Have you? No. Oh God, help us. Who shall abide in thy tabernacle? Psalms 15 and1. Who shall dwell in thy hill? He that walketh uprightly. This is getting rid of flies. This is in Psalms 15 and one and two. He that walketh uprightly and workketh righteousness.
Amen. Righteousness is a work. You've got to allow that to work within you. The kingdom of God is not meat or drink, but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. Uh if you're going to live a righteous life, you've got to have his righteousness applied because your own righteousness is as filthy rags. You can't run around with stinking filthy rags. You've got to have his righteousness working righteousness in you. Lord, you're molding me. You're shaping me. Lord, I'm on the potter's wheel and you're constantly working on me and speaketh truth in his heart. Uh oh Lord, let me speak truth in my heart. Uh unite my heart to fear thy name, oh God. The scripture says uh I don't want my heart to be divided because if it is divided the scripture says it is faulty. That's why the psalmist said create in me a clean heart. Renew within me a right spirit.
That is our goal. Because those flies want to come along contaminate and bring a little bit of folly. He that backbiteth not with this tongue. Lord, help me to keep this most unruly member, the little red devil behind the white pearly gates. Help me to keep it in check. How many times have we got in trouble with our tongue? My wife and I, we've been married almost 40 years in September, and I'm still working on my tongue. She's mastered hers. I have to say that. I got to be safe, but I'm still working on mine. Backbiteth not with this tongue. Oh, I love you, my friend, my brother. And turn around and back bite. I remember a dog I went to pet it one time. A str I've learned one thing. You never pet strange dogs. I've been bit numerous times and by a monkey. I'll have to tell you that story one day. I went to pet this dog. As soon as I turned around to walk off, that dog turned around came and bit me.
I'm like, "What? Why'd you do that?" Another one. I was petting him kind of backwards and he was a big dog and I didn't realize it and he went and he jumped up and bit me right on the nose. At least it's still there. Back biteth not with his tongue. Keep your tongue from evil. My tongue is to offer the sacrifice of praise unto his name. The fruit of the lips. What are these lips for? No, they're to bless and not curse. Encourage, strengthen. Amen. Praise God. nor doeth evil to his neighbor, nor take up a reproach against his neighbor, in whose eyes a vile person is not condemned, but he honorth them that fear the Lord. He that swearth to his own hurt and changeeth not. He that putth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved. Psalms 19 and 12. Who can understand his errors?
cleanse thou me from secret faults. Uh, can you really understand why you do certain things? Uh, one day you can be in the house of God and you can get in your car and you can drive down the road and maybe go to a store or go home and somebody can do something and boom, it changes. Lord, help me to understand. Who can understand his? Only the Lord can understand the heart. The heart is desperately wicked. Who can know it? I the Lord search the heart and try the reigns of the heart to give man according to his works.
Lord, try me, create, cleanse, renew. Praise God. Because I want to be acceptable and well pleasing in your sight. Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins. Keep me from secret faults and presumptuous sins. Lord, I I know I don't need to do that, but I'm going back and doing it anyway. Lord, when you speak to me, keep me from evil that it might not grieve me. Let them not have dominion over me. Amen. We need the dominion and power of God. Let not sin a and evil a and presumptuous sins have dominion or control or authority over you.
Then shall I be upright and I shall be innocent from the great transgression. What would be the great transgression? To be lost eternally to die in your sins. I want to die in faith. Amen. I want to seek him all my life. And then one day we'll be caught up in a moment, in a twinkling of an eye. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, oh Lord, my strength and my redeemer. I want to be acceptable. So when I go like Daniel, I go and I do the sacrifice. The king said, "Don't you pray to any other god." But what does Daniel do? He still prays like he did. The scripture says a four time, three times a day. Open up that window to heaven. Open up that window to New Jerusalem. I've got problems on every side. I've got discouragement, but I'm gonna lift up my voice unto the Lord. Uh, I'm gonna keep going back.
Uh, I'm gonna keep on praying. I'm going to keep on believing the word of God. Praise God. Because you're going to help me. Amen. What does the Lord require of you? That you would do justly. Love mercy. If you love mercy, you're going to show mercy because you realize you need mercy. Blessed are the merciful, so they shall obtain mercy. If you have obtained mercy, you realize how precious it is, and you're going to show mercy to others. And that's the what the church is called to. We have a world that they might hurt us, but we still show mercy. And we still show love.
Praise God. Praise God. Amen. mercy. Thank God for that. Coming to a close shortly, Luke chapter 18 and verse 9. Two went up to pray. If you could put that picture up there on the board of praying, there was two came to pray. Luke 18:9, he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous and despised others. Little artwork here. Here's a man. I'm a righteous man. I'm I'm an important. I'm not as others. They went up to the temple to pray. One's a Pharisee and one's a publican. The Pharisees stood and prayed thus within himself. God, I thank thee that I am not as other men are. Comparison. You don't need to compare yourself with others. He who compares himself with others in Corinthians it says is unwise because we are all very complex different blessed individuals. We all have talents, abilities, what God has called us to do and there's no need to say well I'm not like so at least I'm not like so and so.
But see here, they he he was trusting in themselves that they were righteous and at the same time time trying to hate and despise others. So I want the apothecary and I want that sweet savor, but I'm allowing flies to get in. I want honor and I want all of that. Uh and I want wisdom and honor, but I want a little folly, too. Well, you don't know, brother, what that person did to me. What did he say? He said, "I'm not as other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, even as this public. I fast twice in the week. I give tithes of all that I possess.
But look at the attitude and the position of the man that went home justified." That's what we want. We want to be washed, sanctified, and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the spirit of our God. And that happened when you were baptized in Jesus name and filled with the Holy Ghost. But it doesn't stop there. It's a whole life of that. Washed, sanctified, justified. You need the washing of the word. You need justification for today. Amen. All of these things we need from God. And this is what he said. Republican standing a far off would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven. And he began to smoke smite his breast, saying, "God, be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other.
For everyone that exalteth himself shall be abased, but he that humbleth himself shall be exalted." Humble yourself under the mighty hand of God. He'll exalt you in due season. And we lift him up today. That he it's a sacrifice that is acceptable and well pleasing in his sight because that's what we want. We want to see him on that day. Romans 16:19, a scripture talking about how we are to be wise unto that which is good. and simple concerning evil. Simple means simply this. Not what you would think, well that's a simple person. No, it means pure, unmixed, untainted by sin.
Praise God. And that's what we want to be is pure in his sight. Shall we stand tonight? Could we just lift our hands tonight and give him the glory and praise? I want to be acceptable in his sight. I want to be well pleasing. Lord, we thank you for your word. Lord, we've heard your word. Let us put it into action. Let us be doers of the word that we will be blessed in that deed. God, we thank you for another day. Bless the Lord, oh my soul, and all that is within me. Bless his holy name. Thank you, Jesus. We'll be entered into a time of worship and praise shortly.
Amen. Praise God. But oh, keep on loving God. Keep on offering that acceptable sacrifice unto the Lord and be well pleasing in his sight. God bless you. As I pray in Jesus name, my vision starts to change over my family, my country, my city. Jericho walls start crashing down. I hear revival sound over my family, my country, my city. Heaven comes to fight for me. I'm going to see in the middle of the stor and louder. You're going to hear my praises roar from beylelu. in everything. I raise a hallelujah. I will watch the darkness. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. You lost your hold on me. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Sing a little louder. Sing a little louder. Sing a little louder. Sing a little louder. In the presence of my enemies. Sing a little louder. Speak to us. already spoken to us through the lessons, but I believe he can affirm it and confirm it in the spirit now.
So, let's lift our hands in the room. Let's ask him to move in this place. Let's ask him to move on us personally. Jesus, we love you. We thank you, Lord, again, God, you're so good to us. You're so faithful, Jesus. We thank you, Lord, for the opportunity, God, to be together, Jesus, tonight again with your people. I thank you for your presence that's with us tonight. I thank you Lord for the opportunity Jesus to worship and lift up my hands to you and give you glory and praise Jesus freely and unrestrain Lord. I thank you Jesus for your help Lord tonight. I thank you God for the leading of your hand. I thank you for keeping and protecting Jesus. I thank you Lord for watching over us God and drawing us in Jesus and bringing us closer to you.
I pray Lord that your spirit move freely in the room. I pray that you'd operate Jesus in every heart and mind God. That you would speak freely Lord and that you would confirm everything that we have heard Lord and that you'd help us Lord to take it with us Jesus and enact it in our lives in Jesus name. Lord let us not only be hearers of your word but let us be doers of it in Jesus name. We bless you. We thank you for it Lord. You are high and lifted up in the room, Jesus. Your name is exalted, Lord, among us tonight. We praise you, Jesus. We magnify your name. We give you glory and honor. We worship you, Jesus.
Now, put your hands together and give him praise. Come on, give him praise. Hallelujah. Hallelujah Jesus, we worship you, Lord. Thank you. thunder and for a moment I thought it conered over sacrifice broken as you restore the veil wide open still. All praise to the name of all Jesus. You the name above all name. You turned the grave into a new nothing's rise against your victory. Your name is highest still. Your name say your name is highest still. All praise. All praise to the name above all name. Sing Jesus you reign. You're the name. You're the name above all name. Thank you Jesus. God still the blood flows. The work is hell. The stone is still high and lifted up. You're still seated on the throne. The cross still stands. The blood still flows. And hell knows that the grave is still empty. The stone is still high and lifted up. You're still seated on the throne.
All praise, all praise to the name above all name. Jesus, you. You're the name above all name. Hallelujah. Every day to age we will sing. There is no higher name. Hallelujah. Every voice will proclaim there is no higher name. All praise, all praise to the name above all names. Jesus, you reign. You're the name above all name. You are the name above all name. You're the name above all name. We worship you, Lord. Hallelu stands. The blood still flows. The work is finished. And still you're still high and lifted up. You're still seated on the cross stand. The work is finished. It is finished. still is still high and lifted up. You're still seated on the throne. Praise, all praise to the name above all name. Jesus, you. You're the name above all name. You are the name. You're the above all name. You're the name of my name. You're the name above all name.
You're above all you. There is no one like our God. There is none more. Christ our savior. Great and glorious. There is no one higher, no one gater, no one like our God. There is none more. Christ our great and glorious. There is no one like our God. There is no one. Christ our savior and glorious. There is no one higher. No one like our God. There is none. Christ our savior. Great and glor. Come on. Would you lift your hands in the room? Come on. Give him glory and praise. Place right now. Come on. Can you let the sweet incense of your worship celebrate the fact whose blood is more able? That the blood still works. The blood still works. Oh Lord, come on. Let the beautiful fragrance of your worship resound before the heavens right now. Oh, somebody needs to step into the holy place for just a moment.
Someone needs to step into the holiest of holies for just a moment. Lord, you're worthy. Lord, you're worthy. Oh, hallelujah. God more, God more able. Christ our savior. Hallelujah. Oh, cast your cares on him, Jesus. You're worthy. You're worthy, Lord Jesus. Oh, all this month, we've been learning about the altar of incense and what it represented, what it represents for us, and what it means ultimately to God. Last week, I know Brother Gibson talked about the aroma that we bring to those around us.
But what about the aroma of our prayer and worship that we bring before Almighty God? That it doesn't matter what kind of supernatural occurrence we need that if we just let the sweet incense of our worship and our prayer go before Almighty God, Oh, that's it. It's okay right now. We're okay. Come on. Run. As pastor would say, run into his presence for just a moment. I'm running after you right now, Lord Jesus. There's no one higher, no one greater. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah Jesus.
Hallelujah. For the last several weeks in our foundations class, we've been discussing the gifts of the spirit. I don't know who needs it right now, but would you just put your hand or or join up with someone beside you for just a moment because somebody needs a word of faith in their life right now. Somebody needs somebody that can speak to them and speak over them and join up with them with a prayer of faith right now. Come on. Would you join up with someone right now? The Bible gives a principle that if two or three agree right now we're two, we're three. Why don't we agree right now together and uplift each other through the gift of the spirit right now and allow faith to rise in this place. Allow faith to begin to move in hearts and lives. Right. Come on. It's okay right now.
Father, in your name, Jesus. In your name. Oh Lord Jesus. Lord, you worthy, worthy, Lord. Oh Lord, as we offer ourselves to you, as we offer ourselves to you in worship, oh God, Jesus. Hallelujah, Lord Jesus. Oh Lord, you're worthy. You're worthy. You're worthy. You're worthy. You're worthy, Lord Jesus. Come on, somebody declare it right now through the Holy Ghost. Somebody receive it right now and say, "God, I I've been needing this, Lord Jesus. Move in this situation. Move in my life, God. Move in my family, Lord Jesus. God, there's no one greater than you. There's no circumstance, no situation, no ailment, no heartache, God, that is greater than you, Lord Jesus. You're worthy. You're worthy, Lord God.
Hallelujah, Jesus. Hallelujah, Lord God. You're mighty. You're mighty, Lord Jesus. I love it when the Lord confirms what his word teaches. And I hope you do, too, because that's how faith is built in our hearts and in our lives. So that when we're faced with storms and the tempest rages and we're tossed to and fro, the one constant and absolute we can rely on is that God will never leave us. He will never forsake us. But in our darkest hour, we'll look up across that storm. And here will come Almighty God walking to us in the middle of that storm, proving once again that that doesn't matter to him because it is subject to him.
Amen. Amen. The Lord is good. Better than we deserve. Amen.
