Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

Give Ear: Asaph's Parable and Its Purpose

  • The lesson continues the Summer of Psalms series with Psalm 78, one of the longer psalms at 72 verses, attributed to Asaph — a musician appointed by David who was also a seer — and titled a contemplation of what Israel's history meant for Israel in his day.
  • Asaph opens by calling God's people to more than hearing: to "incline your ear" is to stretch out and listen with intent, not let the words pass as background noise the way we often sit in church hearing without listening.
  • He speaks in a parable — a truth laid alongside the history, superior in importance to the story itself — and in "dark sayings," riddles to ponder; Israel's history can be read in Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, but Asaph wants them to glean its lessons.
  • Nothing he teaches is new: these are the things they have heard and known, and their fathers have told them.
  • The history must not be hidden from the children: God established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, commanding the fathers to make his praises, his strength, and his wonderful works known to the generation to come, who would declare them to their children in turn.
  • The purpose is twofold — positive and negative: that they might set (fix, establish) their hope in God and keep his commandments, and that they might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation that set not their heart aright and whose spirit was not steadfast with God; as David said, "My heart is fixed, O God."

Scriptures: Psalms 78; Psalms 78:1; Psalms 1

Israel Forgot What God Had Done

  • The first indictment is forgetfulness: the children of Ephraim, armed and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle, kept not the covenant of God, refused to walk in his law, and forgot his works and the wonders he had shown them.
  • Ephraim, Joseph's younger son, received Jacob's crossed-hands blessing and the birthright and rose to become Israel's largest and most prominent tribe — so prominent that the prophets often use "Ephraim" for the northern tribes — yet God had promised the ruler from Judah, and contention followed.
  • Most likely the verse points to the conquest under Joshua: in Judges 1, Judah nearly cleared its land, but Ephraim and the other northern tribes did not drive out the Canaanites as God commanded; they took the best portions, grew comfortable, and quit.
  • What they forgot was what God had done in Egypt: marvelous works in the sight of their fathers, the sea divided so they passed through, led by a cloud in the daytime and a light of fire all night, rocks cloven in the wilderness and streams brought out of the rock like rivers.
  • Forgetting what God has done hinders faith to believe what he will do; remembering and retelling his healings and provisions builds faith that he can do it again.

Scriptures: Judges 1; Psalms 12

Israel Doubted God: 'Can God?'

  • The second indictment is doubt: in the wilderness they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust and spoke against him — "Can God furnish a table in the wilderness? Can he give bread also? Can he provide flesh for his people?"
  • Yet he had already smitten the rock so waters gushed out and streams overflowed, healed the bitter water, and given them clothes and shoes that never wore out.
  • Because they believed not in God and trusted not in his salvation, his wrath came: though he had opened the doors of heaven and rained down manna — angels' food — he also rained flesh and feathered fowls like the sand of the sea into their camp, and while their meat was yet in their mouths he slew the fattest of them and the chosen men of Israel.
  • The heart of man is never content with what he has; given miraculous provision morning by morning without labor, they still complained and questioned whether God could do more.
  • Jesus answered the same worry: take no thought for your life, what you shall eat or drink or wear — the fowls of the air neither sow nor reap yet God feeds them, and we are much better than they; and a father who knows how to give good gifts to his children will much more give good things to them that ask him.
  • Unbelief is the one thing that can stop God's blessings: Jesus went to his hometown of Nazareth and did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

Scriptures: Matthew 6; Matthew 7:11; Matthew 13:58

Lip Service: Israel Served God in Hypocrisy

  • The third lesson is hypocrisy: for all God had done, they sinned still and believed not his wondrous works, so their days were consumed in vanity and their years in trouble through forty years in the wilderness, until all of that generation above the age of twenty were dead.
  • When he slew them, then they sought him, returned, and inquired early after him, remembering that God was their rock and the high God their redeemer — but they flattered him with their mouth and lied unto him with their tongues, for their heart was not right with him, neither were they steadfast in his covenant.
  • God, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity and destroyed them not; many times he turned his anger away and did not stir up all his wrath, remembering that they were but flesh, a wind that passes away and comes not again.
  • Jesus quoted Isaiah's charge against this kind of worship: this people draws nigh with their mouth and honors him with their lips, but their heart is far from him — and worship itself means to bow down, acknowledging him as Lord of one's life, not merely praising with the mouth.
  • Prosperity is a greater temptation than adversity: in hard times people seek God, but when the blessing returns they forget him; let us examine our motives and be sincere, not making God a convenience for hard times.
  • The consolation is his mercy: as Jeremiah wrote in his Lamentations, it is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, his compassions fail not, they are new every morning — great is his faithfulness.

Scriptures: Matthew 15:8; Lamentations (book-only, as spoken)

Rebellion, Judgment — and a God Who Does Not Forget His People

  • The parable continues in counterpoint: Israel provoked and grieved God in the desert again and again, turned back, tempted him, and limited the Holy One of Israel — they were a pain to him — remembering not his hand, the day he delivered them from the enemy.
  • God's response was twofold: he smote Egypt and its firstborn, yet made his own people go forth like sheep, guided them like a flock, and led them safely so they feared not while the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
  • They tempted and provoked the Most High, kept not his testimonies, turned aside like a deceitful bow, and provoked him to anger with their high places, moving him to jealousy with their graven images.
  • This time when God heard it he was wroth and greatly abhorred Israel: he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh and delivered his strength and his glory into the enemy's hand — as in the days of the judges, when nation after nation overran Israel until a judge arose.
  • Yet the Lord awakened as one out of sleep, like a mighty man that shouts by reason of wine, and smote his enemies and put them to a perpetual reproach; and he was very sore displeased with the heathen who were at ease — he had been but a little displeased with Israel, and they helped forward the affliction against his people.
  • The dark saying is this: God will never forget his people. You may have backslid and been far from him, but he has not forgotten you; though we fail, he is always willing to show mercy if we call upon him — not with lying lips, but seeking him sincerely.

Scriptures: Zechariah 1:15

He Chose Judah and David — Look Unto Jesus

  • At the end of the chapter God refused the tabernacle of Joseph and chose not Ephraim; he chose Judah, which he loved, built his sanctuary, and chose David his servant, taking him from the sheepfolds to feed Jacob his people — and David fed them according to the integrity of his heart and guided them by the skillfulness of his hands.
  • Jacob had prophesied this from Genesis: the sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come, and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.
  • David is a type of Jesus: what David did in the natural, Jesus does in the spirit — the suffering servant of Isaiah's prophecy, of whom he said there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse and a branch shall grow out of his roots, and the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him.
  • David's own word holds for the caller today: the Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.
  • The closing aim is the charge of the writer of Hebrew: looking unto Jesus, the author and the finisher of our faith.
  • The lesson gathers into one appeal: do not forget what God has done in your life, do not doubt what he is going to do tomorrow, do not live in hypocrisy, remember that he is a merciful God, and set your hope in him.

thank you Lord thank you Lord brother Cardin already welcomed everyone it is good to see everyone in the house of the Lord amen good to feel God's presence listen to an old song just this week except like the feel that I feel when I get together with God's wonderful people some of you would remember that man but we get together with God's people and we get to feel God's presence he said you come together in my name I'm right there in the midst and

so I'm glad to know Jesus is in the house today man amen somebody asked me a couple weeks ago said are you learning anything I hope I am because I'm teaching these lessons I hope I'm learning something but I did learn something today we've got some guests here from Mississippi I always thought it was Mississippi but he corrected me said it's Mississippi when you're down there so I learned something Psalm chapter 78 Psalm chapter 78 I'll read just first four verses here and then

we'll look at this chapter we are doing a summer of Psalms and so got after today a couple more lessons that we will do from the sum before we move into something else but Psalm 78 verse 1 says give ear o my people to my law and climb your ears to the words of my mouth I will open my mouth in a parable I will utter dark sayings of old which we have heard and known and our fathers have told us we will not

hide them from their children and showing to the generation to come the Praises of the Lord and his strength and his wonderful works that he has done if you've got a Bible with you keep it open because we're going to go through a portion a good portion of this Psalm chapter 78. it's a very interesting Psalm much of it is a condensed history of Israel from the time of The Exodus going up until the time that David was appointed or made anointed really not

appointed but anointed to be king of Israel until he took that throne and it is attributed to asaph in the title if you look right in if you got your Bible open in the title of it tells us that it was attributed to ASAP ASAP was both a musician one of David's appointed musicians he was also what was referred to in the Bible as a Seer or to say that in a different way to help us understand a Seer he could see the things

of God so he was in some ways he was a prophet and so the title calls it a makiel of asaph that word McKeel refers to something contemplated or something so he was thinking about something he was contemplating what through Israel's history and he was thinking about Israel's history but more important he was thinking about how it applied to Israel in his day so it went beyond just thinking about it but he was thinking what's the significance of this history unlike Psalms 1 which

we taught a few weeks ago which was very short some six verses this is one of the longer ones having 72. now we spent two weeks on Psalm one so we're only going to spend one week on this one don't worry I'm going to approach it differently instead of picking it apart phrase by phrase word by word we will look more at some of the concepts that are presented ASAP gives us an introduction in the first eight verses here and if you look through

those first eight verses we'll go through those but he we can divide them into three different parts this introduction first in the first three verses he encourages The Listener to Incline his ears or to listen while he teaches them from Israel's history then in verses four through six he stresses that these lessons should be passed down to the Next Generation and then finally in seven and eight he gives the reason that he wrote The Psalm so let's look at these before we plunge into

the historical parts of it he begins this way give ear o my people to my law incline your ears to the words of my mouth so he begins by trying to get his audience attention of course he does it in the second phrase by saying oh my people so he's calling out to them listen I want you to hear this and twice in this verse we hear see the word ear he said to give ear which simply means to hear listen to what I'm

going to say hear what I am going to say and then he says incline your ear that's an interesting word in the Hebrew because it literally means to stretch out make sure you're hearing cup your hand behind your ear whatever you have to do listen be intentive to what I am going to say what he was saying is yes hear me but don't just hear me listen to me and I know as a speaker you're never supposed to do this but you know if

you'd stop in here I can hear the air conditioners running now you're all you know I lost you all right now because you're listening for an air conditioner that's why I'm not supposed to do that right but he was saying there are things that we hear and we just kind of ignore they're there and we ignore it it's background noise if you will and so he said don't just hear me listen to me pay attention and so he says here's what I want you

to hear how many times do we hear things but we're not listening to things how many times you come to church and our minds somewhere completely somewhere else and we're thinking about what we're doing tomorrow or for dinner or whatever we're going to do and we hear things but we aren't listening are we paying attention so he's saying give ear people hear me but listen to me I've got something I want to say and then he goes on to say I want you to

hear the words of my mouth I want to hear what I am speaking to you verse 2 he said I will open my mouth in a parable I will utter dark sayings of old which we have heard and known and our fathers have told us what are the words of his mouth that he talked about in verse 1 they are Parables I think that gives us one of the clues to understanding this chapter asaph wasn't interested in just telling Israel's history you can go

back Israel and read that if you want it's there in Exodus and it's there in Leviticus it's there are more more in numbers in Deuteronomy if you want to read our history you can go back and do that and so he said I want to tell you something else I want to say it as a parable now that para literally means something laid alongside of or next to something else and so here's the story but more than that here's what's important here's what to

glean from it in fact in the Hebrew sense that para that Parable means something superior to the actual story that is being told so the history is important Israel but more important is the lessons that God is trying to get us to learn and so he said I'm going to speak in a parable and then he goes on to say that I am going to tell you some dark sayings dark sayings that's why we study the Old Testament that seems to be good Bible

stories for Sunday school class but it is to see what we can glean and what kind of historical truths we can pull from there some spiritual truths and so when he says dark sane he doesn't mean something dark in the sense of something bad or something evil but rather a a riddle or something perplexing something you need to Pond or something you need to think about now no he wasn't going to tell them anything new he wasn't going to say something that they had

not heard before because he says in verse 3 he said we've heard these and we've known them and our fathers have told us so what I'm going to say at least the lesson I'm going to give you the the part I'm going to give you from history you already know that you know our history but what I want to do today is explain its significance in fact I've given that as a title to this lesson today it's Parables and dark sayings he goes on

to say we will not hide them from our children so here is the second part first part was to listen to me and here's I'm going to talk you to you about something and then the second part is we're going to teach it to those behind us showing to the generations to come he said we want to show them the Praises of the Lord the great things God did I want to show him his strength his wonderful works that he has done and then

he said he established a testimony in Jacob and he appointed a law in Israel which he commanded our fathers make known to their children that the generation to come might know them even the children which should be born who should arise and declare them to their children I think ASAP probably understood the maxim that we hear even sometime many times a day if you don't learn history you're doomed to repeat it so he was saying go ahead and listen tell them the story so

they can see and they don't copy the mistakes of their father he said he was ready to teach his dark sayings if you will these riddles these Mysteries so succeeding Generations could learn from their ancestors mistakes you ever notice human nature is to try to cover our tracks to try to soft pedal our shortcomings I mean we like to remember the good things we kind of just kind of skim over the bad right ASAP said this we will not hide them so I'm going

to tell you some things but we're not going to hide the truth of what was going on throughout Israel's history notice the balance though he was not going to hide the father's errors and the things that they did wrong but he was also not going to hide the goodness of God and that how God was with him he would show God's Praises his strength his wonderful works that he had done he reminds him God had made it a law for them tell it to

your children our pastor has repeated that scripture over and over in the last several months as he is gotten the pulpit he talked about hero is the Lord of God As One Lord and teach it and teach it to your children talk about it and so God gave them that command and that's what asaph is saying here he said he gave us the testimony he told us he appointed a law and commanded them tell it to your children wasn't optional it wasn't something that

we could get around he reminds them God made it a law to pass this on Bible class we've seen a lot of things you look around there's some long experience here many decades of experience living for God seeing many great things that God has done and what he's saying is talk about it tell the Next Generation pass it on and then he gives his purpose for this Psalm he gives us both a positive and negative it's interesting the way he said it in verses

seven and eight that they might set their hope in God and not forget the works of God but keep his Commandments and might not be as their fathers a stubborn and rebellious generation a generation that set not their heart or right and whose Spirit was not steadfast with God I'm reminded we studied Psalm chapter 1 in a two weeks of lesson a few weeks ago and it's kind of reminiscent in here where we learned that the blessed man Delights in God's law that's the

positive side but the ungodly the Sinners and the scornfuls do not so you had a two different paths two different choices here and so the psalmist here ASAP uses another positive and a negative he speaks of those that might he said that they might set their hope in God and then he said and that they might not in a negative sense be like they're stubborn and rebellious fathers and so a positive and a negative and then there's another one here he said they there

are those who set which means to ordain or to establish determine to fix they set their hope in God trust that's what we do today right we set it in God we say here is where my hope is this is what I built my life on I'm setting my hope my dreams what I'm going to do my life in God and then he said in the end of those he talks about who set not their heart are right so that's the negative whose Spirit

was not steadfast and there again that means established made firm sure lasting they're not steadfast with God you can either set your hope in God or you're gonna set not your hope in the things of God so the question today for us and the parable the dark saying is where do you set your hope are you focusing on what's in this life and what's around us and everything that we're doing and living for here or is my hope set in eternal life and what

God has for us we need to say like David my heart is fixed oh God that was enough he said it again my heart is fixed not once but twice see what he was saying is I have settled it my heart is fixed I'm going to sing I'm going to give praise I'm going to live for you and so this is the purpose or this is why he wrote this Psalm that we will set our hope in God and not set them in things

and not be steadfast things that are not of God so throughout this psalm ASAP contrast Israel's Behavior with God's response and you see this over and over as he goes through this he talks about what Israel did he talks about what God did he says well Israel did this God did that Israel had this kind of attitude here's what God did for them the first thing thing we see as we go through this Psalm verses 9 through 11 is that Israel forgot the things

that God did for them now he had just said remember tell it to your children keep passing it on but Israel kept forgetting and so his first indictment against him is they forgot God's work and so verse 9 says this the children of Ephraim being armed carrying bows so they're all equipped ready to go turned back in the day of battle they kept not the Covenant of God they refused to walk on his law and they forgot his works and his Wonders that he

showed them and I know there's been a lot of sermons preached from that verse particularly the verse 9 the children of each and being armed turned back in the day of battle when many sermons preached for that there's probably been many opinions about what battle that was read through commentaries and this one says oh I think it was this battle it was that but well I'm the one teaching today so I'll give you my opinion first let me tell you who Ephraim was just

in case we had forgotten that we understand he was one of Joseph's sons and when it came time for the blessing Jacob Joseph's father was going to bless the sons of Joseph and so the two sons manessa and Ephraim manessa being the older one were presented manessa on this side as as Jacob faced them and Ephraim over here because manessa was older and so the blessing should go to the older son and Jacob reaches forth his hands and goes like this Joseph but no

Daddy got it wrong he said don't I know what I'm doing and he pronounced the blessing on Ephraim and he actually gave Ephraim the birthright that belonged according to the law it belonged to Jacob's oldest son Simeon but because of some things Simeon done Joseph said you're not going to receive the birthright and he ends up giving it to his grandson the younger of the two to Ephraim and so Ephraim Rose in prominence he became the largest and probably the most powerful tribe in

Israel so much so that later after the nation of Israel split Ephraim was a part of the northern tribes and and most of the time the prophets would refer when you see in when you're reading Isaiah and Jeremiah and those books later on and they talk about Ephraim they're really talking about all of Israel those 10 tribes because they became so prominent and he sought the preeminence and so they looked at Israel as Ephraim but while Ephraim sought that preeminence God had promised a

ruler from the tribe of Judah and so even though he was the largest tribe even though Ephraim became great there was a great deal of contention with those in some of the other tribes particularly the the southern tribes and although I don't say it for certain here's what I think verse 9 refers most likely to the Conquering of Canaan during the time of Joshua Judges chapter one it's interesting because it's kind of a recap it talks about of course with Joshua they had gone

into the promised land and they'd fought at Jericho and Ai and throughout clearing out the land of Canaan so that they could occupy that land that God had given them and God had given them strict instructions push out all the people get rid of them all kill them off whatever just get rid of them I gave you this land so you make sure don't leave anybody there and the first half of the chapter tells us of the great exploits of Josh Judah how Judah

went in and did his part to clear out that tribe went in and cleared out as much as they could almost all of it with a very small piece that they were not able to do but they cleared out almost all the land that they were given but the second half of the travel chapter has the falling epithet and that is neither did while God was with Judah it is said of Ephraim neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites of course it goes on

neither did Dan neither did and it went through some of the other ones neither did they did not drive so those Northern tribes that had the northern part of the country they did not drive out the inhabitants as they were supposed to they went so far probably gained enough land they said you know what this is good enough I'm comfortable with it and they stopped I'm happy with what I've got God had given him specific commands to drive out them all but the Bible

says they kept not the Covenant of God and they refused to walk in his law so God gave the command you clear them out you get rid of them don't let the Canaanites stay in the land because they've got Idols they've got all this other stuff and we don't want you to have a part of it clear them out but somewhere along the line they said okay we got enough land this looks good leave the Canaanites over there let them have that poor thing

they probably took the best parts that they could get and said you can have the rest of it we don't really care and they let them stay there why what made them turn back and bad they quit quit that's the answer here he said because they forgot God's works they forgot that God was able to help them push them completely out perhaps they didn't think they could accomplish the task we've gone far enough and we're tired of fighting we're tired of this let's just

quit but we see now why asaph did not want to hide the past from the future because you see when we forget what God has done and this is important it hinders our faith to see what he will do amen that's why we like to tell of the things that God has done we like to tell the times he's healed our bodies because when we think about what God has done it gives us Faith to say he can do it again and when you

quit talking about it and when you get quit thinking about it and you forget what God has done then when the next trial then the next thing comes up you say well I don't know you think God can do this well I don't know Ephraim here's the thing they could have driven out the Canaanites somewhere along the line they forgot that God was their Helper and so Psalm 12 goes on 72 12 goes on to say this here's what God did that you forgot

Ephraim marvelous things that he in the sight of their fathers in the land of Egypt in the land of the Zone in the field is on he divided the sea and caused them to pass through he made Waters to stand up as a heap in the daytime he led them with a cloud and all night with the light of fire he claimed rocks in the wilderness he gave them drink out of the depths he brought out streams out of the rock he caused Waters

to run down like a river what he was saying was God provided God Made A Way God was able to conquer and somewhere along the line you forgot that God was able to help you and you're in the day of battle and you say okay we've had enough we turned around and we quit don't God is able to help you the parable if you will the dark saying is this what God has done remember what God has done and you'll have the faith to

believe what God will do don't lose sight of what he did in the past never forget it tell it again because that will build Faith so that you can continue to trust God for what he's going to do in the future the second thing Israel did was they doubted God they doubted God in verse 17 he said and they send yet the more against him by provoking the most high in the wilderness they tempted God in their heart by asking for meat for their

lust yea they spake against God here's what they said can God burn us a table in the wilderness can he do it he went ahead and said this behold he smote The Rock Waters gushed out streams overflowed but can he give us bread also can he provide flesh for his people therefore the Lord heard this and he was wroth so a fire was kindled against Jacob and anger came up against Israel here's why because they believed not in God and trusted not in his

salvation though he had commanded the clouds from above he opened doors from Heaven he sent Manna down they ate Angel's food he said he caused an East Wind because of that and because they doubted him God said okay here's what I'm going to do he brought a wind forward and it said it rained flesh upon them and feathered fowls Like Us in the sand of the sea he blew Quail right into their camp and they all just dropped in front of him people were

so greedy they went out the Bible tells us and they picked them up again to eat them before they even cooked them they were so hungry for flesh they were so interested in just filling their bellies and the Bible said while their meat was yet in their mouths the Wrath that God Came Upon them and slew ASAP said the fattest of them and smoked Down The Chosen men of Israel why because you just didn't believe in me ASAP tells the story we just just

went over it God was able to provide he provided water first they came to water that was bitter and they couldn't drink it God healed the water so they could they get into later on in and they're in the desert and there's no water around bitter water or otherwise nothing to drink and they said what are we going to do there's no water you brought us out here to die Moses stretches forth this Rod hits a rock water gushes forth and they have water

to drink God gave them water from a rock that's where I go for water right and go find a rock in the yard and get it doesn't work that way but God can do it in a place with no food God provided miraculously mannered for them to eat he gave them clothes and shoes that never wore out yet while he continued providing them for them and making a way for them they continually complained that's fine we got Mana to eat but can we eat

something else you didn't even have to work it's there every morning go scoop it up good enough to eat all day and you're good to go and they complained three times we read of their questioning can God feed us can he give us bread can he provide meat they're doubting God as we observe when we were studying Psalm 1 the heart of a man is never content with what he has you ever notice that I mean you can give it to him and give

it to him and give it to him and they're never content the eyes of man Solomon said are never satisfied given what God had provided for them they should have had no doubt that he could meet their needs yet they doubt it God can you really do this can you do that now here's the thing here's here's the dark saying if you're here's the parable here's where we're at we looked and said well I would never question God like that well of course God

can do that I'd never say God can you do this well we might not say it that way but let me ask how often do we worry and fret over things that God told us not to worry about don't worry about I'm going to take care of it okay how's this going to happen what you're saying is God can you do this are you going to answer this prayer are you able Jesus said in Matthew 6 he said take therefore I say unto you

take no thought for your life and what you shall eat what you shall drink nor yet for your body what you put on is not life more than meat in the body more than arraignment behold the fowls of the air they don't sow they don't reap they don't Gather in the barns yet God takes care of them he feeds them and aren't you much better than they are and in verse chapter 7 11 he said if then you know how to give good gifts

to your children how much more will your father in Heaven could give give good things to them that ask him and yet we say can God can you do that I don't know do you think God can do this unbelief is the one thing the Bible lists that can stop the blessings of God don't believe you don't try it was goes to his hometown of Nazareth and as he's leaving there he gives this assessment Matthew 13 58 and he did not many mighty works

there why because of their unbelief Israel saw it God provided for it and yet they didn't believe and said well God can you do this can you do that can you really take care of us the third thing third lesson we learned is that Israel served God in hypocrisy verse 32 said for all this all the stuff that God's done for them all the ways he's provided for all this they sinned still they still didn't believe his wondrous Works therefore their days did he

consume in vanity this is while they're walking around for 40 years in the wilderness vanity emptiness uselessness void nothing here we are just another day to travel through the desert and he consumed their years in trouble until all of those above the age of 20 were dead they just drove it said he slew them and they and then now listen to this when he slew them then they sought him and they returned and they cry inquired early after they got and then suddenly you

know they forgot God earlier they remembered okay he's our Rock he's the high God he's my redeemer they remembered that but ASAP goes on to say well that's not enough nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth and they lied unto him with their tongues for their heart was not right with him neither were they steadfast in his Covenant so they got in trouble they cried out to God but all the time they're doing that they're lying God you're great you're my redeemer you're

my rock you're my high God and they're flattering them with their mouth they're praising and exalting him lifting them up just having a great time on a Sunday morning and they're lying to him with their tongues because their heart is somewhere else that's Israel's response now listen what it says about God but he being full of compassion forgave their iniquity and destroyed them not yea many times turned he his anger away and did not stir up his Wrath he knew they were Faking It

he knew that what they were doing was just because they were in a bad place and yet he turned his anger away he didn't stir up his wrath he remembered that they were flesh that they were a wind that passeth away and comes not again because of their unbelief God had sent Israel difficult times sometimes he would send pestilences among them sometimes he allowed other nations to conquer them sometimes he sent famine and he sent drought and when he did they would realize their

mistake and they would seek after him but asaph tells us it was just lip service they were flattering with their mouths they were lying with their tongues how much like those and here's the dark saying if you will who know the right way yet choose to go their own way but when adversity comes who do they call they go down to the bar and tell other buddies hey I need you to pray about this no they they find somebody serving God they show up

at church come down to an altar and cry before him and then we don't see them again and I'm not pointing a finger at anybody what I'm saying is sometimes sometimes we're always coming to church and our hearts far from him and when we get in trouble then we cry out to God lord I need your help and when the blessing return we forget him and return to our ways you know it's been said and I think there's a lot of truth to it

that Prosperity is greater Temptation than adversity because when God's blessed and it's easy to just say hey everything's going good in my life and we just kind of forget about him but when we go through adversity it's like wow I have nothing else to do I'll turn to God and God becomes a convenience for hard times and if we're not careful we become forgotten in the good times Jesus quoted Isaiah in Matthew 15 8 he said there's a people they draw a nigh unto

me with their mouths they honor me with their lips heart far from I hope we can learn for this from this dark saying let us examine our motives let's just be sincere in our worship it's not just about oh Lord I need a blessing I need you to come touch my life it's about Lord I want to live for you I want to serve you I thought last week as we were singing one of the songs we were singing was about worshiping him worship

literally it's not just what comes out of your mouth but worship the word literally means to bow down what you were doing is saying Lord I am acknowledging you are Lord of my life now you can praise anybody right somebody hits a home run you can praise that was a great job glad you hit that little Cardinals aren't doing that right now but that's another story great job you can praise them but that's not worshiping them it's not bowing down and say oh serve

you I want you Lord Of My Life and so when we come into God's presence is it just lip service the consolation we have is this but he being full of compassion aren't so thankful for God because I know all of us and I'll speak for me first sometimes we come into the house of the Lord and we lift up our hands and our heart is somewhere else and God because of his compassion he forgives that iniquity and he destroys them not and he

turns his anger away aren't you thankful for the mercies of God Jeremiah wrote in his Lamentations he said it is of the Lord's Mercies we are not consumed can you imagine being part we want to be book of Acts right they're taking an offering a couple walks in sold some land lay at Peter's feet is this how much you got for that property yep that's the whole thing strikes him dead wife comes in your husband said this is that true yeah they agreed together

to lie I don't see anywhere where God required them to give the full price of that property but you did require them to be honest they could have said no we gave you half of it okay well but they lied they were hypocritical you want a book of Acts church but I don't think we want to go there right might be few in number here at some point but because of his mercies aren't you thankful for his Mercy we are not consumed his compassion's

fail not he said they are new every morning great is thy faithfulness now we just got through about verse 39 there's 72 of them we're obviously not going to get through the whole book I didn't figure we would the parable continues though and it's more this point of Israel history and a Counterpoint of God and we don't have time so let's just summarize some of this Israel said the Bible says of Israel how often do they provoke the word there means they were rebellious

how often were they rebellious against him in the wilderness they grieved that's to Vex him to just upset him in the desert they turned their back and they tempted that word means they tested god well that's that God can you do this can you do that and they limited the Bible says and that that word literally means they pained they were a pain in the neck if you will to God the Holy One they pain they limited the Holy One of Israel they remembered

not as hand they didn't remember the day when he delivered them from the enemy they just forgot about all of that and so this time God's response he said I smote Israel the firstborn of uh or smote Egypt the firstborn in their strength he said but I made you to go forth like sheep and I guided you like a flock and I led you safely so that you didn't have to fear while the sea overwhelmed the enemies so you're sitting there being a pain

and I'm trying to lead you out he goes on to say talking about Israel he said they tempted and provoked the most high God they didn't keep his law his testimonies they turned back they don't unfaithfully like their fathers they were turned aside like a deceitful bow they provoked him to anger with their high places this is e Ephraim because you left Canaan in the land and Canaan had all these idols and they began to worship all of those and they moved God to

jealousy with their graven images and then Psalm 78 says here's what God did when God heard this now this is a little bit of a change before God said I turned my back I ignored it but they kept doing it and so when God heard this the Bible says in verse 59 he was Wrath and he greatly abhorred Israel I'm sick of this stuff you know it's kind of like when you get tired of your kids doing something you get a little upset start

up horn things you know I don't like this what's going on doesn't mean you quit loving your kids right you just get upset with what they're doing so that he forsake the Tabernacle of Shiloh the tent which he had placed among men he delivered his strength or he delivers Israel into captivity he sent them to be in captivity and His glory into the enemy's hand he let the enemies overrun them you can read about that over and over in the judges when you read

about how different countries would come in and take over Israel until a judge would come up and help free them like Gideon or Samson or some of those others but then it says this in verse 65. that's what Israel did God God heard him he gets angry because they forsook they just wouldn't do what he said but then it said this the Lord awakened as one out of sleep okay so he turned his back for a little bit the Philistines come in other people

come in take over Israel they're there for a while he raises up a judge because the Lord awakened as a one out of sleep and like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine and he smote his enemies in the hinder parts and he put them to a Perpetual reproach in other words he wasn't going to let it go on forever because those were his people and I think again we see the Everlasting mercies of God interesting verse Zechariah 1 15. God said

this I am very sore displeased with the Heathen that are at ease I don't like it and here's why I was a little displeased with Israel and they helped forward the Affliction in other words they said oh God God's displeased he turned it over we're going to go in and really be hard on Israel and God said I'm sore with that I don't like that those are still my people here's the thing here's the dark saying of this Parable God will never forget his

people God will never forget you you may have come in and backslid and come in and backslid and beaten far from God today God has not forgotten you though we fail he is always willing to show Mercy if we will call upon Him David said this the Lord is nigh to all them that call upon him to all that call to him and her you call on him today he will be there just don't do it with lips and the tongue that's lying seek

Him He will be found all the perils with dark dark sayings I'm going to close with this the end of the chapter he refused the Tabernacle of Joseph he didn't choose Ephraim he chose Judah which he loved he built a sanctuary he chose David his servant he took him for the sheepfolds and he fed them the last verse says according David did according to the Integrity of his heart and guided them with the skillfulness of his hands what's the significance of this David is

a type of Jesus the dark saying that God rejected man's is this God rejected man's efforts through ethereum but he raised up someone through the tribe of Judah way back in Genesis 49 10 Jacob prophesied this the scepter it will not depart from Judah that's where the kingship is going to ride there will be a lawgiver from between his feet until Shiloh come and unto him shall the Gathering of the people be the suffering servant of Isaiah's prophecy came to feed the people and

to lead them in Paths of righteousness Isaiah said and there so come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse and a branch shall grow out of his roots the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him talking about Jesus the spirit of wisdom and understanding counsel might the spirit of knowledge and the fear of God what David did and what ASAP is pointing out what David did in the natural Jesus does in the spirit we'll explore that further next week because I

want to look at some of the Messianic Psalms as we wrap up this summer of Psalms the next couple of weeks but here's the thing don't forget what God has done as Israel did never doubt what he can do live without hypocrisy remember his Mercy and always be as the writer of Hebrew said looking unto Jesus because he's the author and the finisher of your faith asaph saying here's history but here's what I want you to learn from it let's stand this morning don't

forget what God's done in your life don't doubt what he's going to do tomorrow don't live in hypocrisy remember he's a merciful god and look to Jesus why don't you lift a hand and do that right now Lord we're looking to you we understand God that you are our hope you're the only way we can turn the only one we can turn to God our hope is in you we it rests there God not in anything that we can do not in in the

things that man can come up with Lord but we want our heart to be fixed and to be settled and to be steadfast in the love of Jesus Christ thank you Lord thank you Lord well you can greet One Another We're going to take a little break here as we get ready to go into morning worship time amen let that praise come from your heart today in Jesus name
